| 2026 | AutoLink: Autonomous Schema Exploration and Expansion for Scalable Schema Linking in Text-to-SQL at ScaleabstractFor industrial-scale text-to-SQL, supplying the entire database schema to Large Language Models (LLMs) is impractical due to context window limits and irrelevant noise. Schema linking, which filters the schema to a relevant subset, is therefore critical. However, existing methods incur prohibitive costs, struggle to trade off recall and noise, and scale poorly to large databases. We present AutoLink, an autonomous agent framework that reformulates schema linking as an iterative, agent-driven process. Guided by an LLM, AutoLink dynamically explores and expands the linked schema subset, progressively identifying necessary schema components without inputting the full database schema. Our experiments demonstrate AutoLink's superior performance, achieving state-of-the-art strict schema linking recall of 97.4% on Bird-Dev and 91.2% on Spider 2.0-Lite, with competitive execution accuracy, i.e., 68.7% EX on Bird-Dev (better than CHESS) and 34.9% EX on Spider 2.0-Lite (ranking 2nd on the official leaderboard). Crucially, AutoLink exhibits exceptional scalability, maintaining high recall, efficient token consumption, and robust execution accuracy on large schemas (e.g., over 3,000 columns) where existing methods severely degrade—making it a highly scalable, high-recall schema-linking solution for industrial text-to-SQL systems. | 2026 | SpeechMedAssist: Efficiently and Effectively Adapting Speech Language Models for Medical ConsultationabstractMedical consultations are intrinsically speechcentric. However, most prior works focus on long-text-based interactions, which are cumbersome and patient-unfriendly.Recent advances in speech language models (SpeechLMs) have enabled more natural speech-based interaction, yet the scarcity of medical speech data and the inefficiency of directly fine-tuning on speech data jointly hinder the adoption of SpeechLMs in medical consultation. In this paper, we propose SpeechMedAssist, a SpeechLM natively capable of conducting speech-based multi-turn interactions with patients.By exploiting the architectural properties of SpeechLMs, we decouple the conventional one-stage training into a two-stage paradigm consisting of (1) Knowledge & Capability Injection via Text and (2) Modality Re-alignment with Limited Speech Data, thereby reducing the requirement for medical speech data to only 10k synthesized samples. To evaluate SpeechLMs for medical consultation scenarios, we design a benchmark comprising both single-turn question answering and multi-turn simulated interactions.Experimental results show that our model outperforms all baselines in both effectiveness and robustness in most evaluation settings. | 2026 | AutoJudger: An Agent-Driven Framework for Efficient Benchmarking of MLLMsabstractEvaluating multimodal large language models (MLLMs) is becoming increasingly expensive as benchmarks grow in scale and crossmodality complexity.Inspired by structuralism in cognitive psychology, we tackle this difficulty with an adaptive evaluation framework for efficient benchmarking, namely AutoJudger.Instead of passively scoring on a fixed test set, AutoJudger treats evaluation as an interviewlike process by keeping a hypothesized ability structure of the evaluated model and actively selecting the informative questions so as to refine these ability boundaries.Specifically, Auto-Judger has three core components: ability decomposition to organize evaluation along meaningful capability dimensions, ability estimation to maintain an up-to-date quantitative profile of the model competence, and adaptive question selection to choose the most informative questions. To operationalize this paradigm, we introduce A 2 -Judger, a novel MLLM-based Agentic instantiation of AutoJudger equipped with semantic-aware retrieval and dynamic memory.Experiments on four representative multimodal benchmarks show that A 2 -Judger significantly improves sample efficiency while maintaining reliable evaluation results. | 2026 | Interleaved Latent Visual Reasoning with Selective Perceptual ModelingabstractInterleaved reasoning paradigms enhance Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) with visual feedback but are hindered by the prohibitive computational cost of re-encoding pixel-dense images. A promising alternative, latent visual reasoning, circumvents this bottleneck yet faces limitations: methods either fail to capture intermediate state evolution due to single-step, non-interleaved structures, or sacrifice precise perceptual modeling by over-compressing features. We introduce Interleaved Latent Visual Reasoning (ILVR), a framework that unifies dynamic state evolution with precise perceptual modeling. ILVR interleaves textual generation with latent visual representations that act as specific, evolving cues for subsequent reasoning. Specifically, we employ a self-supervision strategy where a momentum teacher model selectively distills relevant features from ground-truth intermediate images into sparse supervision targets. This adaptive selection mechanism guides the model to autonomously generate context-aware visual signals. Extensive experiments on multimodal reasoning benchmarks demonstrate that ILVR outperforms existing approaches, effectively bridging the gap between fine-grained perception and sequential multimodal reasoning. | 2026 | MAGNET: Towards Adaptive GUI Agents with Memory-Driven Knowledge EvolutionabstractMobile GUI agents powered by large foundation models enable autonomous task execution in applications, but frequent updates that alter UI appearance and reorganize workflows cause agents trained on historical data to fail. Despite these surface changes, we observe that functional semantics and task intents remain fundamentally stable. Building on this insight, we introduce MAGNET, a memory-driven adaptive agent framework with dual-level memory: stationary memory that links diverse visual features to stable functional semantics for robust action grounding and procedural memory that captures stable task intents across varying workflows. Furthermore, we propose a dynamic memory evolution mechanism that continuously refines both memories by prioritizing frequently accessed knowledge. Evaluations on the online benchmark AndroidWorld demonstrate substantial improvements over memory-augmented baselines, while offline benchmarks confirm consistent gains under distribution shifts. These results validate that leveraging stable structures across interface changes improves agent performance and generalization in evolving software environments. Jiwen Zhang, Zhongyu Wei |

| 2026 | Each Rank Could be an Expert: Single-Ranked Mixture of Experts LoRA for Multi-task LearningabstractLow-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) is widely used for adapting large language models (LLMs) to specific domains due to its efficiency and modularity. However, vanilla LoRA struggles with task conflicts in multi-task scenarios. Recent works adopt Mixture of Experts (MoE) by treating each LoRA module as an expert, thereby mitigating task interference through multiple specialized LoRA modules. While effective, these methods often isolate knowledge within individual tasks, failing to fully exploit the shared knowledge across related tasks. In this paper, we establish a connection between single LoRA and multi-LoRA MoE, integrating them into a unified framework. We demonstrate that the dynamic routing of multiple LoRAs is functionally equivalent to rank partitioning and block-level activation within a single LoRA. To systematically study the role of expert granularity in multi-task learning, we conduct an in-depth investigation within our unified framework. Our empirical results show that a finer-grained expert partitioning not only yields significant performance gains but also captures more diverse parameter patterns. These empirical findings are supported by our theoretical analysis, which proves that finer granularity expands parameter space diversity and tightens the model's error bound. Building on these findings, we propose Single-ranked Mixture of Experts LoRA (SMoRA ), which embeds MoE into LoRA by treating each rank as an independent expert. With a dynamic rank-wise activation mechanism, SMoRA facilitates a flexible composition of knowledge, enabling the model to learn deeper and more diverse features while mitigating task conflicts. Experiments demonstrate that SMoRA activates fewer parameters yet achieves better performance in multi-task scenarios. | 2026 | Valley: Video Assistant with Large Language Model Enhanced AbilityabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs), with remarkable conversational capabilities, have emerged as AI assistants that can handle both visual and textual modalities. However, their effectiveness in joint video-language understanding has not been extensively explored. In the article, we introduce Valley , a multi-modal foundation model designed to enable enhanced video comprehension and instruction-following capabilities. To this end, we construct two datasets, namely “ Valley-702k ” and “ Valley-instruct-73k ,” to cover a diverse range of video–text alignment and video-based instruction tasks, such as multi-shot captions, long video descriptions, action recognition, causal inference, and so on. Then, we adopt ViT-L/14 as the vision encoder and explore three different temporal modeling modules to learn multifaceted features for enhanced video understanding. In addition, we implement a two-phase training approach for Valley: the first phase focuses solely on training the projection module to facilitate the LLM’s capacity to understand visual input, and the second phase jointly trains the projection module and the LLM to improve their instruction following ability. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Valley has the potential to serve as an effective video assistant, simplifying complex video understanding tasks. | 2025 | Synergistic Multi-Agent Framework with Trajectory Learning for Knowledge-Intensive TasksabstractRecent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have led to significant breakthroughs in various natural language processing tasks. However, generating factually consistent responses in knowledge-intensive scenarios remains a challenge due to issues such as hallucination, difficulty in acquiring long-tailed knowledge, and limited memory expansion. This paper introduces SMART, a novel multi-agent framework that leverages external knowledge to enhance the interpretability and factual consistency of LLM-generated responses. SMART comprises four specialized agents, each performing a specific sub-trajectory action to navigate complex knowledge-intensive tasks. We propose a multi-agent co-training paradigm, Long-Short Trajectory Learning, which ensures synergistic collaboration among agents while maintaining fine-grained execution by each agent. Extensive experiments on five knowledge-intensive tasks demonstrate SMART's superior performance compared to widely adopted knowledge internalization and knowledge enhancement methods. Our framework can extend beyond knowledge-intensive tasks to more complex scenarios. Shengbin Yue, Siyuan Wang 0025, Wei Chen 0088, Xuanjing Huang 0001, Zhongyu Wei |

| 2025 | AI Hospital: Benchmarking Large Language Models in a Multi-agent Medical Interaction SimulatorabstractArtificial intelligence has significantly revolutionized healthcare, particularly through large language models (LLMs) that demonstrate superior performance in static medical question answering benchmarks. However, evaluating the potential of LLMs for real-world clinical applications remains challenging due to the intricate nature of doctor-patient interactions. To address this, we introduce AI Hospital, a multi-agent framework emulating dynamic medical interactions between Doctor as player and NPCs including Patient and Examiner. This setup allows for more practical assessments of LLMs in simulated clinical scenarios. We develop the Multi-View Medical Evaluation (MVME) benchmark, utilizing high-quality Chinese medical records and multiple evaluation strategies to quantify the performance of LLM-driven Doctor agents on symptom collection, examination recommendations, and diagnoses. Additionally, a dispute resolution collaborative mechanism is proposed to enhance medical interaction capabilities through iterative discussions. Despite improvements, current LLMs (including GPT-4) still exhibit significant performance gaps in multi-turn interactive scenarios compared to non-interactive scenarios. Our findings highlight the need for further research to bridge these gaps and improve LLMs’ clinical decision-making capabilities. | 2025 | Benchmark Self-Evolving: A Multi-Agent Framework for Dynamic LLM EvaluationabstractThis paper presents a benchmark self-evolving framework to dynamically evaluate rapidly advancing Large Language Models (LLMs). We utilize a multi-agent system to reframe new evolving instances with high confidence that extend existing benchmarks. Towards a more scalable, robust and fine-grained evaluation, we implement six reframing operations to construct evolving instances testing LLMs against diverse queries, shortcut biases and probing their problem-solving sub-abilities. With this framework, we extend datasets across general and specific tasks, through various iterations. Experimental results show a performance decline in most LLMs against their original results under scalable and robust evaluations, offering a more accurate reflection of model capabilities alongside our fine-grained evaluation. Besides, our framework widens performance discrepancies both between different models and within the same model across various tasks, facilitating more informed model selection for specific tasks. We hope this framework contributes the research community for continuously evolving benchmarks alongside LLM development. | 2025 | SocioBench: Modeling Human Behavior in Sociological Surveys with Large Language ModelsabstractLarge language models (LLMs) show strong potential for simulating human social behaviors and interactions, yet lack large-scale, systematically constructed benchmarks for evaluating their alignment with real-world social attitudes. To bridge this gap, we introduce SocioBench-a comprehensive benchmark derived from the annually collected, standardized survey data of the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP).The benchmark aggregates over 480,000 real respondent records from more than 30 countries, spanning 10 sociological domains and over 40 demographic attributes. Our experiments indicate that LLMs achieve only 30-40% accuracy when simulating individuals in complex survey scenarios, with statistically significant differences across domains and demographic subgroups. These findings highlight several limitations of current LLMs in survey scenarios, including insufficient individuallevel data coverage, inadequate scenario diversity, and missing group-level modeling. We have open-sourced SocioBench at https:// github.com/JiaWANG-TJ/SocioBench. | 2025 | UI-Hawk: Unleashing the Screen Stream Understanding for Mobile GUI AgentsabstractGraphical User Interface (GUI) agents are expected to precisely operate on the screens of digital devices. Existing GUI agents merely depend on current visual observations and plain-text action history, ignoring the significance of history screens. To mitigate this issue, we propose UI-Hawk, a multi-modal GUI agent specially designed to process screen streams encountered during GUI navigation. UI-Hawk incorporates a history-aware visual encoder to handle the screen sequences. To acquire a better understanding of screen streams, we select four fundamental tasks—UI grounding, UI referring, screen question answering, and screen summarization. We further propose a curriculum learning strategy to subsequently guide the model from fundamental tasks to advanced screen-stream comprehension.Along with the efforts above, we have also created a benchmark FunUI to quantitatively evaluate the fundamental screen understanding ability of MLLMs. Extensive experiments on FunUI and GUI navigation benchmarks consistently validate that screen stream understanding is essential for GUI tasks. Our code and data are now available at https://github.com/IMNearth/UIHawk. | 2025 | ITFormer: Bridging Time Series and Natural Language for Multi-Modal QA with Large-Scale Multitask DatasetabstractTime-series data are critical in diverse applications, such as industrial monitoring, medical diagnostics, and climate research. However, effectively integrating these high-dimensional temporal signals with natural language for dynamic, interactive tasks remains a significant challenge. To address this, we introduce the Time-Series Question Answering (Time-Series QA) task and release EngineMT-QA, the first large-scale, multi-task, temporal-textual QA dataset designed to capture complex interactions between time-series signals and natural language. Building on this resource, we propose the Instruct Time Transformer (ITFormer), a novel framework that bridges time-series encoders with frozen large language models (LLMs). ITFormer effectively extracts, aligns, and fuses temporal and textual features, achieving a strong improvement in QA accuracy over strong baselines with fewer than 1% additional trainable parameters. By combining computational efficiency with robust cross-modal modeling, our work establishes a adaptable paradigm for integrating temporal data with natural language, paving the way for new research and applications in multi-modal AI. | 2025 | Multi-agent KTO: Enhancing Strategic Interactions of Large Language Model in Language GameabstractAchieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) requires AI agents that can not only make strategic decisions but also engage in flexible and meaningful communication. Inspired by Wittgenstein's language game theory, we propose that language agents can learn through in-context interaction rather than traditional multi-stage frameworks that separate decision-making from language expression. Using Werewolf, a social deduction game that tests language understanding, strategic interaction, and adaptability, as a test bed, we develop the Multi-agent Kahneman-Tversky's Optimization (MaKTO). MaKTO engages diverse models in extensive gameplay to generate unpaired desirable and unacceptable responses, then employs KTO to refine the model's decision-making process. In 9-player Werewolf games, MaKTO achieves a 61% average win rate across various models, outperforming GPT-4o and two-stage RL agents by relative improvements of 23.0% and 10.9%, respectively. Notably, MaKTO also demonstrates human-like performance, winning 60% against expert players and showing only 48.9% detectability in Turing-style blind tests. | 2025 | GPT-4V(ision) as A Social Media Analysis EngineabstractRecent research has shed light on the capabilities of Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) across various general vision and language tasks. The performance of LMMs in specialized domains, such as social media, which integrates text, images, videos, and sometimes audio, remains an area of active interest. Effective analysis of such content requires models to interpret the complex interactions between different communication modalities and their influence on the conveyed message. This article explores GPT-4V(ision)’s performance in social multimedia analysis. We evaluate GPT-4V across five representative tasks: sentiment analysis, hate speech detection, fake news identification, demographic inference, and political ideology detection. Our approach includes a preliminary quantitative analysis for each task using existing benchmark datasets, followed by a review of the results and a selection of qualitative samples to demonstrate GPT-4V’s performance in multimodal social media content analysis. GPT-4V shows effectiveness in these tasks, exhibiting capabilities like joint image–text understanding, contextual and cultural awareness, and commonsense knowledge application. However, challenges persist, including struggles with multilingual social multimedia comprehension and difficulty in adapting to the latest social media trends. It also sometimes generates incorrect information about evolving knowledge of celebrities and politicians. This preliminary study aims to inform further research across disciplines, particularly in computational social science and social media studies. The findings highlight the potential of LMMs to enhance our understanding of social media content and its users through multimodal analysis. | 2025 | Fine-Tuned Large Language Model for Visualization System: A Study on Self-Regulated Learning in EducationabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs) have shown great potential in intelligent visualization systems, especially for domain-specific applications. Integrating LLMs into visualization systems presents challenges, and we categorize these challenges into three alignments: domain problems with LLMs, visualization with LLMs, and interaction with LLMs. To achieve these alignments, we propose a framework and outline a workflow to guide the application of fine-tuned LLMs to enhance visual interactions for domain-specific tasks. These alignment challenges are critical in education because of the need for an intelligent visualization system to support beginners' self-regulated learning. Therefore, we apply the framework to education and introduce Tailor-Mind, an interactive visualization system designed to facilitate self-regulated learning for artificial intelligence beginners. Drawing on insights from a preliminary study, we identify self-regulated learning tasks and fine-tuning objectives to guide visualization design and tuning data construction. Our focus on aligning visualization with fine-tuned LLM makes Tailor-Mind more like a personalized tutor. Tailor-Mind also supports interactive recommendations to help beginners better achieve their learning goals. Model performance evaluations and user studies confirm that Tailor-Mind improves the self-regulated learning experience, effectively validating the proposed framework. | 2025 | Interactive simulation and visual analysis of social media event dynamics with LLM-based multi-agent modelingabstractWith the increasing role of social media in information dissemination, effectively simulating and analyzing public event dynamics has become a key research focus. We present an interactive visual analysis system for simulating social media events using multi-agent models powered by large language models (LLMs). By modeling agents with diverse characteristics, the system explores how agents perceive information, adjust their emotions and stances, provide feedback, and influence the trajectory of events. The system integrates real-time interactive simulation with multi-perspective visualization, enabling users to investigate event trajectories and key influencing factors under varied configurations. Theoretical work standardizes agent attributes and interaction mechanisms, supporting realistic simulation of social media behaviors. | 2024 | Value at Adversarial Risk: A Graph Defense Strategy against Cost-Aware AttacksabstractDeep learning methods on graph data have achieved remarkable efficacy across a variety of real-world applications, such as social network analysis and transaction risk detection. Nevertheless, recent studies have illuminated a concerning fact: even the most expressive Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are vulnerable to graph adversarial attacks. While several methods have been proposed to enhance the robustness of GNN models against adversarial attacks, few have focused on a simple yet realistic approach: valuing the adversarial risks and focused safeguards at the node level. This empowers defenders to allocate heightened security level to vulnerable nodes, while lower to robust nodes. With this new perspective, we propose a novel graph defense strategy RisKeeper, such that the adversarial risk can be directly kept in the input graph. We start at valuing the adversarial risk, by introducing a cost-aware projected gradient descent attack that takes into account both cost avoidance and compliance with costs budgets. Subsequently, we present a learnable approach to ascertain the ideal security level for each individual node by solving a bi-level optimization problem. Through extensive experiments on four real-world datasets, we demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance surpassing state-of-the-art methods. Our in-depth case studies provide further insights into vulnerable and robust structural patterns, serving as inspiration for practitioners to exercise heightened vigilance. | 2024 | Can LLMs Reason with Rules? Logic Scaffolding for Stress-Testing and Improving LLMsabstractLarge language models (LLMs) have achieved impressive human-like performance across various reasoning tasks. However, their mastery of underlying inferential rules still falls short of human capabilities. To investigate this, we propose a logic scaffolding inferential rule generation framework, to construct an inferential rule base, ULogic, comprising both primitive and compositional rules across five domains. Our analysis of GPT-series models over a rule subset reveals significant gaps in LLMs' logic understanding compared to human performance, especially in compositional and structural complex rules with certain bias patterns. We further distill these rules into a smaller-scale inference engine for flexible rule generation and enhancing downstream reasoning.Through a multijudger evaluation, our inference engine proves effective in generating accurate, complex and abstract conclusions and premises, and improve various commonsense reasoning tasks.Overall, our work sheds light on LLMs' limitations in grasping inferential rule and suggests ways to enhance their logical reasoning abilities 1 . | 2024 | DELAN: Dual-Level Alignment for Vision-and-Language Navigation by Cross-Modal Contrastive LearningabstractVision-and-Language navigation (VLN) requires an agent to navigate in unseen environment by following natural language instruction. For task completion, the agent needs to align and integrate various navigation modalities, including instruction, observation and navigation history. Existing works primarily concentrate on cross-modal attention at the fusion stage to achieve this objective. Nevertheless, modality features generated by disparate uni-encoders reside in their own spaces, leading to a decline in the quality of cross-modal fusion and decision. To address this problem, we propose a Dual-levEL AligNment (DELAN) framework by cross-modal contrastive learning. This framework is designed to align various navigation-related modalities before fusion, thereby enhancing cross-modal interaction and action decision-making. Specifically, we divide the pre-fusion alignment into dual levels: instruction-history level and landmark-observation level according to their semantic correlations. We also reconstruct a dual-level instruction for adaptation to the dual-level alignment. As the training signals for pre-fusion alignment are extremely limited, self-supervised contrastive learning strategies are employed to enforce the matching between different modalities. Our approach seamlessly integrates with the majority of existing models, resulting in improved navigation performance on various VLN benchmarks, including R2R, R4R, RxR and CVDN. This intricate task gives rise to three challenges in existing work: factual accuracy, aspect comprehensiveness, and content relevance. In this paper, we first propose an FB-Thinker framework to improve the summarization ability of LLMs with multi-objective forward reasoning and multi-reward backward refinement. To enable LLM with these dual capabilities, we present two Chinese product review summarization datasets, Product-CSum and Product-CSum-Cross, for both instruction-tuning and cross-domain evaluation. Specifically, these datasets are collected via GPT-assisted manual annotations from an online forum and public datasets. We further design an evaluation mechanism Product-Eval, integrating both automatic and human evaluation across multiple dimensions for product summarization. | 2024 | PASUM: A Pre-training Architecture for Social Media User Modeling Based on Text GraphabstractModeling social media users is the core of social governance in the digital society. Existing works have incorporated different digital traces to better learn the representations of social media users, including text information encoded by pre-trained language models and social network information encoded by graph models. However, limited by overloaded text information and hard-to-collect social network information, they cannot utilize global text information and cannot be generalized without social relationships. In this paper, we propose a Pre-training Architecture for Social Media User Modeling based on Text Graph(PASUM). We aggregate all microblogs to represent social media users based on the text graph model and learn the mapping from microblogs to user representation. We further design inter-user and intra-user contrastive learning tasks to inject general structural information into the mapping. In different scenarios, we can represent users based on text, even without social network information. | 2024 | Symbolic Working Memory Enhances Language Models for Complex Rule ApplicationabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable reasoning performance but struggle with multi-step deductive reasoning involving a series of rule application steps, especially when rules are presented non-sequentially.Our preliminary analysis shows that while LLMs excel in single-step rule application, their performance drops significantly in multi-step scenarios due to the challenge in rule grounding. It requires anchoring the applicable rule and supporting facts at each step, amidst multiple input rules, facts, and inferred facts. To address this, we propose augmenting LLMs with external working memory and introduce a neurosymbolic framework for rule application. The memory stores facts and rules in both natural language and symbolic forms, enabling precise tracking.Utilizing this memory, our framework iteratively performs symbolic rule grounding and LLM-based rule implementation. The former matches predicates and variables of symbolic rules and facts to ground applicable rules at each step.Experiments indicate our framework's effectiveness in rule application and its robustness across various steps and settings 1 . This module can be embedded into recommendation systems that contain learning components of contextual information. Experimental results on three real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposal, and the state-of-the-art models with SAM significantly outperform the original ones. | 2024 | Human vs. LMMs: Exploring the Discrepancy in Emoji Interpretation and Usage in Digital CommunicationabstractLeveraging Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) to simulate human behaviors when processing multimodal information, especially in the context of social media, has garnered immense interest due to its broad potential and far-reaching implications. Emojis, as one of the most unique aspects of digital communication, are pivotal in enriching and often clarifying the emotional and tonal dimensions. Yet, there is a notable gap in understanding how these advanced models, such as GPT-4V, interpret and employ emojis in the nuanced context of online interaction. This study intends to bridge this gap by examining the behavior of GPT-4V in replicating human-like use of emojis. The findings reveal a discernible discrepancy between human and GPT-4V behaviors, likely due to the subjective nature of human interpretation and the limitations of GPT-4V's English-centric training, suggesting cultural biases and inadequate representation of non-English cultures. | 2024 | ReForm-Eval: Evaluating Large Vision Language Models via Unified Re-Formulation of Task-Oriented BenchmarksabstractRecent years have witnessed remarkable progress in the development of large vision-language models (LVLMs). Benefiting from the strong language backbones and efficient cross-modal alignment strategies, LVLMs exhibit surprising capabilities to perceive visual signals and perform visually grounded reasoning. However, the capabilities of LVLMs have not been comprehensively and quantitatively evaluated. Most existing multi-modal benchmarks require task-oriented input-output formats, posing great challenges to automatically assess the free-form text output of LVLMs. To effectively leverage the annotations available and reduce the manual efforts required for constructing new benchmarks, we propose to re-formulate existing benchmarks into unified LVLM-compatible formats. Through systematic data collection and reformulation, we present ReForm-Eval benchmark, offering substantial data for evaluating various capabilities of LVLMs. Through extensive experiments and analysis in ReForm-Eval, we demonstrate the comprehensiveness and reliability of ReForm-Eval in assessing various LVLMs. Our benchmark and evaluation framework is now available at https://github.com/FudanDISC/ReForm-Eval Mengfei Du, Qingwen Liu 0002, Binhao Wu, Jiwen Zhang, Chengxing Zhou, Zhihao Fan, Jie Fu 0001, Jingjing Chen 0001, Zhongyu Wei, Xuanjing Huang 0001 |

| 2024 | Unifying Local and Global Knowledge: Empowering Large Language Models as Political Experts with Knowledge GraphsabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs) have revolutionized solutions for general natural language processing (NLP) tasks. However, deploying these models in specific domains still faces challenges like hallucination. While existing knowledge graph retrieval-based approaches offer partial solutions, they cannot be well adapted to the political domain. On one hand, existing generic knowledge graphs lack vital political context, hindering deductions for practical tasks. On the other hand, the nature of political questions often renders the direct facts elusive, necessitating deeper aggregation and comprehension of retrieved evidence. To address these challenges, we propose a Political Experts through Knowledge Graph Integration (PEG) framework. PEG entails the creation and utilization of a multi-view political knowledge graph (MVPKG), which integrates U.S. legislative, election, and diplomatic data, as well as conceptual knowledge from Wikidata. With MVPKG as its foundation, PEG enhances existing methods through knowledge acquisition, aggregation, and injection. This process begins with refining evidence through semantic filtering, followed by its aggregation into global knowledge via implicit or explicit methods. The integrated knowledge is then utilized by LLMs through prompts. Experiments on three real-world datasets across diverse LLMs confirm PEG's superiority in tackling political modeling tasks. | 2024 | Unifying Structure Reasoning and Language Pre-Training for Complex Reasoning TasksabstractRecent pre-trained language models (PLMs) equipped with foundation reasoning skills have shown remarkable performance on downstream complex tasks. However, the significant structure reasoning skill has been rarely studied, which involves modeling implicit structure information within the text and performing explicit logical reasoning over them to deduce the conclusion. This paper proposes a unified learning framework that combines explicit structure reasoning and language pre-training to endow PLMs with the structure reasoning skill. It first identifies several elementary structures within contexts to construct structured queries and performs step-by-step reasoning along the queries to identify the answer entity. The fusion of textual semantics and structure reasoning is achieved by using contextual representations learned by PLMs to initialize the representation space of structures, and performing stepwise reasoning on this semantic representation space. Experimental results on four datasets demonstrate that the proposed model achieves significant improvements in complex reasoning tasks involving diverse structures, and shows transferability to downstream tasks with limited training data and effectiveness for complex reasoning of KGs modality. | 2024 | Visual Explanation for Open-Domain Question Answering With BERTabstractOpen-domain question answering (OpenQA) is an essential but challenging task in natural language processing that aims to answer questions in natural language formats on the basis of large-scale unstructured passages. Recent research has taken the performance of benchmark datasets to new heights, especially when these datasets are combined with techniques for machine reading comprehension based on Transformer models. However, as identified through our ongoing collaboration with domain experts and our review of literature, three key challenges limit their further improvement: (i) complex data with multiple long texts, (ii) complex model architecture with multiple modules, and (iii) semantically complex decision process. In this paper, we present VEQA, a visual analytics system that helps experts understand the decision reasons of OpenQA and provides insights into model improvement. The system summarizes the data flow within and between modules in the OpenQA model as the decision process takes place at the summary, instance and candidate levels. Specifically, it guides users through a summary visualization of dataset and module response to explore individual instances with a ranking visualization that incorporates context. Furthermore, VEQA supports fine-grained exploration of the decision flow within a single module through a comparative tree visualization. We demonstrate the effectiveness of VEQA in promoting interpretability and providing insights into model enhancement through a case study and expert evaluation. | 2023 | Unifying Cross-Lingual and Cross-Modal Modeling Towards Weakly Supervised Multilingual Vision-Language Pre-trainingabstractMultilingual Vision-Language Pre-training (VLP) is a promising but challenging topic due to the lack of large-scale multilingual imagetext pairs.Existing works address the problem by translating English data into other languages, which is intuitive and the generated data is usually limited in form and scale. In this paper, we explore a more practical and scalable setting: weakly supervised multilingual VLP with only English image-text pairs and multilingual text corpora. We argue that the universal multilingual representation learned from texts allows the cross-modal interaction learned in English to be transferable to other languages. To this end, we propose a framework to effectively unify cross-lingual and cross-modal pre-training.For unified modeling on different data, we design an architecture with flexible modules to learn different interactions. Moreover, two unified tasks are introduced to efficiently guide the unified crosslingual cross-modal learning.Extensive experiments demonstrate that our pre-trained model learns universal multilingual multimodal representations, allowing effective cross-lingual transfer on multimodal tasks.Code and models are available at https://github.com/ FudanDISC/weakly-supervised-mVLP. | 2023 | AR-Diffusion: Auto-Regressive Diffusion Model for Text GenerationabstractDiffusion models have gained significant attention in the realm of image generation due to their exceptional performance. Their success has been recently expanded to text generation via generating all tokens within a sequence concurrently.
However, natural language exhibits a far more pronounced sequential dependency in comparison to images, and the majority of existing language models are trained with a left-to-right auto-regressive approach.
To account for the inherent sequential characteristic of natural language, we introduce Auto-Regressive Diffusion (AR-Diffusion). AR-Diffusion ensures that the generation of tokens on the right depends on the generated ones on the left, a mechanism achieved through employing a dynamic number of denoising steps that vary based on token position. This results in tokens on the left undergoing fewer denoising steps than those on the right, thereby enabling them to generate earlier and subsequently influence the generation of tokens on the right.
In a series of experiments on various text generation tasks, including text summarization, machine translation, and common sense generation, AR-Diffusion clearly demonstrated its superiority over existing diffusion language models and that it can be $100\times\sim600\times$ faster when achieving comparable results. Although these systems have achieved considerable diagnostic accuracy, they are still far below its performance upper bound due to few turns of interaction with patients and insufficient performance of symptom inquiry. To address this problem, we propose a new automatic diagnostic framework called DxFormer, which decouples symptom inquiry and disease diagnosis, so that these two modules can be independently optimized. The transition from symptom inquiry to disease diagnosis is parametrically determined by the stopping criteria. In DxFormer, we treat each symptom as a token, and formalize the symptom inquiry and disease diagnosis to a language generation model and a sequence classification model, respectively. We use the inverted version of Transformer, i.e. the decoder-encoder structure, to learn the representation of symptoms by jointly optimizing the reinforce reward and cross-entropy loss. RESULTS: We conduct experiments on three real-world medical dialogue datasets, and the experimental results verify the feasibility of increasing diagnostic accuracy by improving symptom recall. Our model overcomes the shortcomings of previous RL-based methods. By decoupling symptom query from the process of diagnosis, DxFormer greatly improves the symptom recall and achieves the state-of-the-art diagnostic accuracy. | 2022 | A Progressive Framework for Role-Aware Rumor ResolutionabstractExisting works on rumor resolution have shown great potential in recognizing word appearance and user participation. However, they ignore the intrinsic propagation mechanisms of rumors and present poor adaptive ability when unprecedented news emerges. To exploit the fine-grained rumor diffusion patterns and generalize rumor resolution methods, we formulate a predecessor task to identify triggering posts, and then exploit their characteristics to facilitate rumor verification. We design a tree-structured annotation interface and extend PHEME dataset with labels on the message level. Data analysis shows that triggers play a critical role in verifying rumors and present similar lingual patterns across irrelevant events. We propose a graph-based model considering the direction and interaction of information flow to implement role-aware rumor resolution. Frame detection aims to automatically analyze framing strategy. Previous works on frame detection mainly focus on a single scenario or issue, ignoring the special characteristics of frame detection that new events emerge continuously and policy agenda changes dynamically. To better deal with various context and frame typologies across different issues, we propose a two-stage adaptation framework. In the framing domain adaptation from pre-training stage, we design two tasks based on pivots and prompts to learn a transferable encoder, verbalizer, and prompts. In the downstream scenario generalization stage, the transferable components are applied to new issues and label sets. | 2022 | Locate Then Ask: Interpretable Stepwise Reasoning for Multi-hop Question AnsweringabstractMulti-hop reasoning requires aggregating multiple documents to answer a complex question. Existing methods usually decompose the multi-hop question into simpler single-hop questions to solve the problem for illustrating the explainable reasoning process. However, they ignore grounding on the supporting facts of each reasoning step, which tends to generate inaccurate decompositions. In this paper, we propose an interpretable stepwise reasoning framework to incorporate both single-hop supporting sentence identification and single-hop question generation at each intermediate step, and utilize the inference of the current hop for the next until reasoning out the final result. We employ a unified reader model for both intermediate hop reasoning and final hop inference and adopt joint optimization for more accurate and robust multi-hop reasoning. We conduct experiments on two benchmark datasets HotpotQA and 2WikiMultiHopQA. | 2022 | Constructing Phrase-level Semantic Labels to Form Multi-Grained Supervision for Image-Text RetrievalabstractExisting research for image text retrieval mainly relies on sentence-level supervision to distinguish matched and mismatched sentences for a query image. However, semantic mismatch between an image and sentences usually happens in finer grain, i.e., phrase level. In this paper, we explore to introduce additional phrase-level supervision for the better identification of mismatched units in the text. In practice, multi-grained semantic labels are automatically constructed for a query image in both sentence-level and phrase-level. We construct text scene graphs for the matched sentences and extract entities and triples as the phrase-level labels. In order to integrate both supervision of sentence-level and phrase-level, we propose Semantic Structure Aware Multimodal Transformer (SSAMT) for multi-modal representation learning. Inside the SSAMT, we utilize different kinds of attention mechanisms to enforce interactions of multi-grained semantic units in both sides of vision and language. For the training, we propose multi-scale matching from both global and local perspectives, and penalize mismatched phrases. | 2022 | MVPTR: Multi-Level Semantic Alignment for Vision-Language Pre-Training via Multi-Stage LearningabstractPrevious vision-language pre-training models mainly construct multi-modal inputs with tokens and objects (pixels) followed by performing cross-modality interaction between them. We argue that the input of only tokens and object features limits high-level semantic alignment like phrase-to-region grounding. Meanwhile, multi-level alignments are inherently consistent and able to facilitate the representation learning synergistically. Therefore, in this paper, we propose to learn Multi-level semantic alignment for Vision-language Pre-TRaining (MVPTR). In MVPTR, we follow the nested structure of both modalities to introduce concepts as high-level semantics. To ease the learning from multi-modal multi-level inputs, our framework is split into two stages, the first stage focuses on intra-modality multi-level representation learning, the second enforces interactions across modalities via both coarse-grained and fine-grained semantic alignment tasks. In addition to the commonly used image-text matching and masked language model tasks, we introduce a masked concept recovering task in the first stage to enhance the concept representation learning, and two more tasks in the second stage to explicitly encourage multi-level alignments across modalities. Our model achieves state-of-the-art results on several vision and language tasks. Zhihao Fan, Huaixiao Tou, Jingjing Chen 0001, Zhongyu Wei, Xuanjing Huang 0001 |

Single-cell Hi-C (high-resolution chromosome conformation capture) technology can capture genome structure information at the cell level, which provides the opportunity to study how genome structure varies among different cell types. Recently, a few methods are well designed for single-cell Hi-C clustering. | 2022 | Hierarchical reinforcement learning for automatic disease diagnosisabstractMOTIVATION: Disease diagnosis-oriented dialog system models the interactive consultation procedure as the Markov decision process, and reinforcement learning algorithms are used to solve the problem. Existing approaches usually employ a flat policy structure that treat all symptoms and diseases equally for action making. This strategy works well in a simple scenario when the action space is small; however, its efficiency will be challenged in the real environment. Inspired by the offline consultation process, we propose to integrate a hierarchical policy structure of two levels into the dialog system for policy learning. The high-level policy consists of a master model that is responsible for triggering a low-level model, the low-level policy consists of several symptom checkers and a disease classifier. The proposed policy structure is capable to deal with diagnosis problem including large number of diseases and symptoms. RESULTS: Experimental results on three real-world datasets and a synthetic dataset demonstrate that our hierarchical framework achieves higher accuracy and symptom recall in disease diagnosis compared with existing systems. As a hallmark of human intelligence, it involves a degree of explicit reading comprehension, interpretation of logical knowledge and complex rule application. In this paper, we take a step forward in complex reasoning by systematically studying the three challenging and domain-general tasks of the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), including analytical reasoning, logical reasoning and reading comprehension. We propose a hybrid reasoning system to integrate these three tasks and achieve impressive overall performance on the LSAT tests. The experimental results demonstrate that our system endows itself a certain complex reasoning ability, especially the fundamental reading comprehension and challenging logical reasoning capacities. Further analysis also shows the effectiveness of combining the pre-trained models with the task-specific reasoning module, and integrating symbolic knowledge into discrete interpretable reasoning steps in complex reasoning. | 2021 | Automatic detection of infectious diarrhea based on electronic medical recordsabstractIn the prevention and control of infectious diseases, it is an ongoing challenge to locate risk groups as soon as possible and provide timely and reliable diagnoses to suspected patients. At present, the automatic diagnosis of infectious diseases based on Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) is still very limited, and most statistical models focus on predicting the epidemic trend of infectious diseases, ignoring the diagnosis and treatment of patients’ own diseases. In order to explore more effective infectious disease identification strategies, we have designed a complete set of automatic detection procedures for infectious diseases based on electronic medical records. Taking infectious diarrhea as an example, our model is able to give the diagnosis results of patients based on the rich symptom information in the EMRs in a timely and efficient manner. Results show that our proposed pipeline has achieved good performance in the automatic detection of infectious diarrhea, which can well assist doctors in infection identification and positioning of high-risk groups. | 2021 | A Partition Filter Network for Joint Entity and Relation ExtractionabstractIn joint entity and relation extraction, existing work either sequentially encode task-specific features, leading to an imbalance in inter-task feature interaction where features extracted later have no direct contact with those that come first. Or they encode entity features and relation features in a parallel manner, meaning that feature representation learning for each task is largely independent of each other except for input sharing. We propose a partition filter network to model two-way interaction between tasks properly, where feature encoding is decomposed into two steps: partition and filter. In our encoder, we leverage two gates: entity and relation gate, to segment neurons into two task partitions and one shared partition. The shared partition represents inter-task information valuable to both tasks and is evenly shared across two tasks to ensure proper two-way interaction. The task partitions represent intra-task information and are formed through concerted efforts of both gates, making sure that encoding of task-specific features is dependent upon each other. Experiment results on six public datasets show that our model performs significantly better than previous approaches. In addition, contrary to what previous work has claimed, our auxiliary experiments suggest that relation prediction is contributory to named entity prediction in a non-negligible way. | 2021 | TCIC: Theme Concepts Learning Cross Language and Vision for Image CaptioningabstractExisting research for image captioning usually represents an image using a scene graph with low-level facts (objects and relations) and fails to capture the high-level semantics. In this paper, we propose a Theme Concepts extended Image Captioning (TCIC) framework that incorporates theme concepts to represent high-level cross-modality semantics. In practice, we model theme concepts as memory vectors and propose Transformer with Theme Nodes (TTN) to incorporate those vectors for image captioning. Considering that theme concepts can be learned from both images and captions, we propose two settings for their representations learning based on TTN. On the vision side, TTN is configured to take both scene graph based features and theme concepts as input for visual representation learning. On the language side, TTN is configured to take both captions and theme concepts as input for text representation re-construction. Both settings aim to generate target captions with the same transformer-based decoder. During the training, we further align representations of theme concepts learned from images and corresponding captions to enforce the cross-modality learning. | 2021 | An end-to-end heterogeneous graph representation learning-based framework for drug-target interaction predictionabstractAccurately identifying potential drug-target interactions (DTIs) is a key step in drug discovery. Although many related experimental studies have been carried out for identifying DTIs in the past few decades, the biological experiment-based DTI identification is still timeconsuming and expensive. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop effective computational methods for identifying DTIs. In this paper, we develop a novel 'end-to-end' learning-based framework based on heterogeneous 'graph' convolutional networks for 'DTI' prediction called end-to-end graph (EEG)-DTI. Given a heterogeneous network containing multiple types of biological entities (i.e. drug, protein, disease, side-effect), EEG-DTI learns the low-dimensional feature representation of drugs and targets using a graph convolutional networks-based model and predicts DTIs based on the learned features. During the training process, EEG-DTI learns the feature representation of nodes in an end-to-end mode. The evaluation test shows that EEG-DTI performs better than existing state-of-art methods. | 2021 | Integrating multi-network topology for gene function prediction using deep neural networksabstractMOTIVATION: The emergence of abundant biological networks, which benefit from the development of advanced high-throughput techniques, contributes to describing and modeling complex internal interactions among biological entities such as genes and proteins. Multiple networks provide rich information for inferring the function of genes or proteins. To extract functional patterns of genes based on multiple heterogeneous networks, network embedding-based methods, aiming to capture non-linear and low-dimensional feature representation based on network biology, have recently achieved remarkable performance in gene function prediction. However, existing methods do not consider the shared information among different networks during the feature learning process. RESULTS: Taking the correlation among the networks into account, we design a novel semi-supervised autoencoder method to integrate multiple networks and generate a low-dimensional feature representation. Then we utilize a convolutional neural network based on the integrated feature embedding to annotate unlabeled gene functions. We test our method on both yeast and human datasets and compare with three state-of-the-art methods. The results demonstrate the superior performance of our method. | 2020 | Storytelling from an Image Stream Using Scene GraphsabstractVisual storytelling aims at generating a story from an image stream. Most existing methods tend to represent images directly with the extracted high-level features, which is not intuitive and difficult to interpret. We argue that translating each image into a graph-based semantic representation, i.e., scene graph, which explicitly encodes the objects and relationships detected within image, would benefit representing and describing images. To this end, we propose a novel graph-based architecture for visual storytelling by modeling the two-level relationships on scene graphs. In particular, on the within-image level, we employ a Graph Convolution Network (GCN) to enrich local fine-grained region representations of objects on scene graphs. To further model the interaction among images, on the cross-images level, a Temporal Convolution Network (TCN) is utilized to refine the region representations along the temporal dimension. Then the relation-aware representations are fed into the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) with attention mechanism for story generation. Experiments are conducted on the public visual storytelling dataset. | 2020 | Simplify the Usage of Lexicon in Chinese NERabstractRecently, many works have tried to augment the performance of Chinese named entity recognition (NER) using word lexicons. As a representative, Lattice-LSTM (Zhang and Yang, 2018) has achieved new benchmark results on several public Chinese NER datasets. However, Lattice-LSTM has a complex model architecture. This limits its application in many industrial areas where real-time NER responses are needed. In this work, we propose a simple but effective method for incorporating the word lexicon into the character representations. This method avoids designing a complicated sequence modeling architecture, and for any neural NER model, it requires only subtle adjustment of the character representation layer to introduce the lexicon information.Experimental studies on four benchmark Chinese NER datasets show that our method achieves an inference speed up to 6.15 times faster than those of state-ofthe-art methods, along with a better performance. The experimental results also show that the proposed method can be easily incorporated with pre-trained models like BERT. 1 * Equal contribution. | 2020 | PathQG: Neural Question Generation from FactsabstractExisting research for question generation encodes the input text as a sequence of tokens without explicitly modeling fact information. These models tend to generate irrelevant and uninformative questions. In this paper, we explore to incorporate facts in the text for question generation in a comprehensive way.We present a novel task of question generation given a query path in the knowledge graph constructed from the input text.We divide the task into two steps, namely, query representation learning and query-based question generation. We formulate query representation learning as a sequence labeling problem for identifying the involved facts to form a query and employ an RNN-based generator for question generation. We first train the two modules jointly in an end-to-end fashion, and further enforce the interaction between these two modules in a variational framework. We construct the experimental datasets on top of SQuAD and results show that our model outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches, and the performance margin is larger when target questions are complex.Human evaluation also proves that our model is able to generate relevant and informative questions. 1 Siyuan Wang 0025, Zhongyu Wei, Zhihao Fan, Zengfeng Huang, Weijian Sun, Qi Zhang 0001, Xuanjing Huang 0001 |

| 2020 | Q-value Path Decomposition for Deep Multiagent Reinforcement LearningabstractRecently, deep multiagent reinforcement learning (MARL) has become a highly active research area as many real-world problems can be inherently viewed as multiagent systems. A particularly interesting and widely applicable class of problems is the partially observable cooperative multiagent setting, in which a team of agents learns to coordinate their behaviors conditioning on their private observations and commonly shared global reward signals. One natural solution is to resort to the centralized training and decentralized execution paradigm and during centralized training, one key challenge is the multiagent credit assignment: how to allocate the global rewards for individual agent policies for better coordination towards maximizing system-level’s benefits. In this paper, we propose a new method called Q-value Path Decomposition (QPD) to decompose the system’s global Q-values into individual agents’ Q-values. Unlike previous works which restrict the representation relation of the individual Q-values and the global one, we leverage the integrated gradient attribution technique into deep MARL to directly decompose global Q-values along trajectory paths to assign credits for agents. We evaluate QPD on the challenging StarCraft II micromanagement tasks and show that QPD achieves the state-of-the-art performance in both homogeneous and heterogeneous multiagent scenarios compared with existing cooperative MARL algorithms. | 2020 | Joint Representation Learning of Legislator and Legislation for Roll Call PredictionabstractIn this paper, we explore to learn representations of legislation and legislator for the prediction of roll call results. The most popular approach for this topic is named the ideal point model that relies on historical voting information for representation learning of legislators. It largely ignores the context information of the legislative data. We, therefore, propose to incorporate context information to learn dense representations for both legislators and legislation. For legislators, we incorporate relations among them via graph convolutional neural networks (GCN) for their representation learning. For legislation, we utilize its narrative description via recurrent neural networks (RNN) for representation learning. In order to align two kinds of representations in the same vector space, we introduce a triplet loss for the joint training. Experimental results on a self-constructed dataset show the effectiveness of our model for roll call results prediction compared to some state-of-the-art baselines. | 2019 | A Multi-Agent Communication Framework for Question-Worthy Phrase Extraction and Question GenerationabstractQuestion generation aims to produce questions automatically given a piece of text as input. Existing research follows a sequence-to-sequence fashion that constructs a single question based on the input. Considering each question usually focuses on a specific fragment of the input, especially in the scenario of reading comprehension, it is reasonable to identify the corresponding focus before constructing the question. In this paper, we propose to identify question-worthy phrases first and generate questions with the assistance of these phrases. We introduce a multi-agent communication framework, taking phrase extraction and question generation as two agents, and learn these two tasks simultaneously via message passing mechanism. The results of experiments show the effectiveness of our framework: we can extract question-worthy phrases, which are able to improve the performance of question generation. Besides, our system is able to extract more than one question worthy phrases and generate multiple questions accordingly. | 2019 | Bridging by Word: Image Grounded Vocabulary Construction for Visual CaptioningabstractExisting research for visual captioning usually employs a CNN-RNN architecture that combines a CNN for image encoding with a RNN for caption generation, where the vocabulary is constructed from the entire training dataset as the decoding space.Such approaches typically suffer from the problem of generating N-grams which occur frequently in the training set but are irrelevant to the given image. To tackle this problem, we propose to construct an image-grounded vocabulary that leverages image semantics for more effective caption generation.More concretely, a two-step approach is proposed to construct the vocabulary by incorporating both visual information and relationships among words. Two strategies are then explored to utilize the constructed vocabulary for caption generation. One constrains the generator to select words from the image-grounded vocabulary only and the other integrates the vocabulary information into the RNN cell during the caption generation process.Experimental results on two public datasets show the effectiveness of our framework compared to state-of-the-art models. Our code is available on Github 1 . | 2019 | Building Personalized Simulator for Interactive SearchabstractInteractive search, where a set of tags is recommended to users together with search results at each turn, is an effective way to guide users to identify their information need. It is a classical sequential decision problem and the reinforcement learning based agent can be introduced as a solution. The training of the agent can be divided into two stages, i.e., offline and online. Existing reinforcement learning based systems tend to perform the offline training in a supervised way based on historical labeled data while the online training is performed via reinforcement learning algorithms based on interactions with real users. The mis-match between online and offline training leads to a cold-start problem for the online usage of the agent. To address this issue, we propose to employ a simulator to mimic the environment for the offline training of the agent. Users' profiles are considered to build a personalized simulator, besides, model-based approach is used to train the simulator and is able to use the data efficiently. Experimental results based on real-world dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our agent and personalized simulator. | 2019 | A learning-based framework for miRNA-disease association identification using neural networksabstractMOTIVATION: A microRNA (miRNA) is a type of non-coding RNA, which plays important roles in many biological processes. Lots of studies have shown that miRNAs are implicated in human diseases, indicating that miRNAs might be potential biomarkers for various types of diseases. Therefore, it is important to reveal the relationships between miRNAs and diseases/phenotypes. RESULTS: We propose a novel learning-based framework, MDA-CNN, for miRNA-disease association identification. The model first captures interaction features between diseases and miRNAs based on a three-layer network including disease similarity network, miRNA similarity network and protein-protein interaction network. Then, it employs an auto-encoder to identify the essential feature combination for each pair of miRNA and disease automatically. Finally, taking the reduced feature representation as input, it uses a convolutional neural network to predict the final label. The evaluation results show that the proposed framework outperforms some state-of-the-art approaches in a large margin on both tasks of miRNA-disease association prediction and miRNA-phenotype association prediction. | 2019 | Acceptance Prediction for Answers on Online Health-care CommunityabstractBACKGROUND: With the development of e-Health, it plays a more and more important role in predicting whether a doctor's answer can be accepted by a patient through online healthcare community. Unlike the previous work which focus mainly on the numerical feature, in our framework, we combine both numerical and textual information to predict the acceptance of answers. The textual information is composed of questions posted by the patients and answers posted by the doctors. To extract the textual features from them, we first trained a sentence encoder to encode a pair of question and answer into a co-dependent representation on a held-out dataset. After that,we can use it to predict the acceptance of answers by doctors. RESULTS: Our experimental results on the real-world dataset demonstrate that by applying our model additional features from text can be extracted and the prediction can be more accurate. That's to say, the model which take both textual features and numerical features as input performs significantly better than model which takes numerical features only on all the four metrics (Accuracy, AUC, F1-score and Recall). CONCLUSIONS: This work proposes a generic framework combining numerical features and textual features for acceptance prediction, where textual features are extracted from text based on deep learning methods firstly and can be used to achieve a better prediction results. We first construct a graph including all involved corporations based on investment facts from real market and learn a distributed representation for each corporation via node embedding methods applied on the graph. Two approaches are then explored to utilize information of related corporations based on a pipeline model and a joint model via graph convolutional neural networks respectively. | 2018 | A Reinforcement Learning Framework for Natural Question Generation using Bi-discriminatorsabstractVisual Question Generation (VQG) aims to ask natural questions about an image automatically. Existing research focus on training model to fit the annotated data set that makes it indifferent from other language generation tasks. We argue that natural questions need to have two specific attributes from the perspectives of content and linguistic respectively, namely, natural and human-written. Inspired by the setting of discriminator in adversarial learning, we propose two discriminators, one for each attribute, to enhance the training. We then use the reinforcement learning framework to incorporate scores from the two discriminators as the reward to guide the training of the question generator. Experimental results on a benchmark VQG dataset show the effectiveness and robustness of our model compared to some state-of-the-art models in terms of both automatic and human evaluation metrics. The increasing volumes of electronic medical records (EMRs) open new horizons for automatic diagnosis. In this paper, we propose to use machine learning approaches for automatic infection detection based on EMRs. Five categories of information are utilized for prediction, including personal information, admission note, vital signs, diagnose test results and medical image diagnose. RESULTS: Experimental results on a newly constructed EMRs dataset from emergency department show that machine learning models can achieve a decent performance for infection detection with area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.88. Out of all the five types of information, admission note in text form makes the most contribution with the AUC of 0.87. | 2018 | A Joint Model of Conversational Discourse and Latent Topics on MicroblogsabstractConventional topic models are ineffective for topic extraction from microblog messages, because the data sparseness exhibited in short messages lacking structure and contexts results in poor message-level word co-occurrence patterns. To address this issue, we organize microblog messages as conversation trees based on their reposting and replying relations, and propose an unsupervised model that jointly learns word distributions to represent: (1) different roles of conversational discourse, and (2) various latent topics in reflecting content information. By explicitly distinguishing the probabilities of messages with varying discourse roles in containing topical words, our model is able to discover clusters of discourse words that are indicative of topical content. In an automatic evaluation on large-scale microblog corpora, our joint model yields topics with better coherence scores than competitive topic models from previous studies. Qualitative analysis on model outputs indicates that our model induces meaningful representations for both discourse and topics. We further present an empirical study on microblog summarization based on the outputs of our joint model. The results show that the jointly modeled discourse and topic representations can effectively indicate summary-worthy content in microblog conversations. | 2015 | Learning to Rank Microblog Posts for Real-Time Ad-Hoc SearchabstractMicroblogging websites have emerged to the center of information production and diffusion, on which people can get useful information from other users’ microblog posts. In the era of Big Data, we are overwhelmed by the large amount of microblog posts. To make good use of these informative data, an effective search tool is required specialized for microblog posts. However, it is not trivial to do microblog search due to the following reasons: 1) microblog posts are noisy and time-sensitive rendering general information retrieval models ineffective. 2) Conventional IR models are not designed to consider microblog-specific features. In this paper, we propose to utilize learning to rank model for microblog search. We combine content-based, microblog-specific and temporal features into learning to rank models, which are found to model microblog posts effectively. To study the performance of learning to rank models, we evaluate our models using tweet data set provided by TERC 2011 and TREC 2012 microblogs track with the comparison of three state-of-the-art information retrieval baselines, vector space model, language model, BM25 model. | 2015 | Gibberish, Assistant, or Master?: Using Tweets Linking to News for Extractive Single-Document SummarizationabstractSingle-document summarization is a challenging task. In this paper, we explore effective ways using the tweets linking to news for generating extractive summary of each document. We reveal the very basic value of tweets that can be utilized by regarding every tweet as a vote for candidate sentences. Base on such finding, we resort to unsupervised summarization models by leveraging the linking tweets to master the ranking of candidate extracts via random walk on a heterogeneous graph. The advantage is that we can use the linking tweets to opportunistically "supervise" the summarization with no need of reference summaries. Furthermore, we analyze the influence of the volume and latency of tweets on the quality of output summaries since tweets come after news release. Compared to truly supervised summarizer unaware of tweets, our method achieves significantly better results with reasonably small tradeoff on latency; compared to the same using tweets as auxiliary features, our method is comparable while needing less tweets and much shorter time to achieve significant outperformance. | 2013 | An evaluation of learning analytics to identify exploratory dialogue in online discussionsabstractSocial learning analytics are concerned with the process of knowledge construction as learners build knowledge together in their social and cultural environments. One of the most important tools employed during this process is language. In this paper we take exploratory dialogue, a joint form of co-reasoning, to be an external indicator that learning is taking place. Using techniques developed within the field of computational linguistics, we build on previous work using cue phrases to identify exploratory dialogue within online discussion. Automatic detection of this type of dialogue is framed as a binary classification task that labels each contribution to an online discussion as exploratory or non-exploratory. We describe the development of a self-training framework that employs discourse features and topical features for classification by integrating both cue-phrase matching and k-nearest neighbour classification. Experiments with a corpus constructed from the archive of a two-day online conference show that our proposed framework outperforms other approaches. A classifier developed using the self-training framework is able to make useful distinctions between the learning dialogue taking place at different times within an online conference as well as between the contributions of individual participants.
