2026 Benchmarking Filtered Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search Algorithms on Transformer-based Embedding Vectors
abstract
Advances in embedding models for text, image, audio, and video drive progress across multiple domains, including retrieval-augmented generation, recommendation systems, and others. Many of these applications require an efficient method to retrieve items that are close to a given query in the embedding space while satisfying a filter condition based on the item's attributes, a problem known as filtered approximate nearest neighbor search (FANNS). By performing an in-depth literature analysis on FANNS, we identify a key gap in the research landscape: publicly available datasets with embedding vectors from state-of-the-art transformer-based text embedding models that contain abundant real-world attributes covering a broad spectrum of attribute types and value distributions. To fill this gap, we introduce the arxiv-for-fanns dataset of transformer-based embedding vectors for the abstracts of over 2.7 million arXiv papers, enriched with 11 real-world attributes such as authors and categories. We benchmark eleven different FANNS methods on our new dataset to evaluate their performance across different filter types, numbers of retrieved neighbors, dataset scales, and query selectivities. We distill our findings into eight key observations that guide users in selecting the most suitable FANNS method for their specific use cases.

2025 RapidChiplet: A Toolchain for Rapid Design Space Exploration of Inter-Chiplet Interconnects
abstract
Chiplet architectures are on the rise as they promise to overcome the scaling challenges of monolithic chips.A key component of such architectures is an efficient inter-chiplet interconnect (ICI).While ICI simulators are important to get reliable performance estimates, they are not fast enough to explore hundreds of thousands of design points or to be used as a cost function for optimization algorithms or machine learning models. To address this issue, we present RapidChiplet, a fast and easy to use ICI latency and throughput prediction toolchain.Compared to cycle-level simulations, we trade 0.25%-30.15%accuracy for 427×-137,682× speedup.

2024 Near-Optimal Wafer-Scale Reduce
abstract
Efficient Reduce and AllReduce communication collectives are a critical cornerstone of high-performance computing (HPC) applications. We present the first systematic investigation of Reduce and AllReduce on the Cerebras Wafer-Scale Engine (WSE). This architecture has been shown to achieve unprecedented performance both for machine learning workloads and other computational problems like FFT. We introduce a performance model to estimate the execution time of algorithms on the WSE and validate our predictions experimentally for a wide range of input sizes. In addition to existing implementations, we design and implement several new algorithms specifically tailored to the architecture. Moreover, we establish a lower bound for the runtime of a Reduce operation on the WSE. Based on our model, we automatically generate code that achieves near-optimal performance across the whole range of input sizes. Experiments demonstrate that our new Reduce and AllReduce algorithms outperform the current vendor solution by up to 3.27×. Additionally, our model predicts performance with less than 4% error. The proposed communication collectives increase the range of HPC applications that can benefit from the high throughput of the WSE. Our model-driven methodology demonstrates a disciplined approach that can lead the way to further algorithmic advancements on wafer-scale architectures.

2023 Sparse Hamming Graph: A Customizable Network-on-Chip Topology
abstract
Chips with hundreds to thousands of cores require scalable networks-on-chip (NoCs). Customization of the NoC topology is necessary to reach the diverse design goals of different chips. We introduce sparse Hamming graph, a novel NoC topology with an adjustable cost-performance trade-off that is based on four NoC topology design principles we identified. To efficiently customize this topology, we develop a toolchain that leverages approximate floorplanning and link routing to deliver fast and accurate cost and performance predictions. We demonstrate how to use our methodology to achieve desired cost-performance trade-offs while outperforming established topologies in cost, performance, or both.

2023 HexaMesh: Scaling to Hundreds of Chiplets with an Optimized Chiplet Arrangement
abstract
2.5D integration is an important technique to tackle the growing cost of manufacturing chips in advanced technology nodes. This poses the challenge of providing high-performance inter-chiplet interconnects (ICIs). As the number of chiplets grows to tens or hundreds, it becomes infeasible to hand-optimize their arrangement in a way that maximizes the ICI performance. In this paper, we propose HexaMesh, an arrangement of chiplets that outperforms a grid arrangement both in theory (network diameter reduced by 42%; bisection bandwidth improved by 130%) and in practice (latency reduced by 19%; throughput improved by 34%). MexaMesh enables large-scale chiplet designs with high-performance ICIs.

2023 High-Performance and Programmable Attentional Graph Neural Networks with Global Tensor Formulations
abstract
Graph attention models (A-GNNs), a type of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), have been shown to be more powerful than simpler convolutional GNNs (C-GNNs). However, A-GNNs are more complex to program and difficult to scale. To address this, we develop a novel mathematical formulation, based on tensors that group all the feature vectors, targeting both training and inference of A-GNNs. The formulation enables straightforward adoption of communication-minimizing routines, it fosters optimizations such as vectorization, and it enables seamless integration with established linear algebra DSLs or libraries such as GraphBLAS. Our implementation uses a data redistribution scheme explicitly developed for sparse-dense tensor operations used heavily in GNNs, and fusing optimizations that further minimize memory usage and communication cost. We ensure theoretical asymptotic reductions in communicated data compared to the established message-passing GNN paradigm. Finally, we provide excellent scalability and speedups of even 4--5x over modern libraries such as Deep Graph Library.

2022 ProbGraph: High-Performance and High-Accuracy Graph Mining with Probabilistic Set Representations
abstract
Important graph mining problems such as Clustering are computationally demanding. To significantly accelerate these problems, we propose ProbGraph: a graph representation that enables simple and fast approximate parallel graph mining with strong theoretical guarantees on work, depth, and result accuracy. The key idea is to represent sets of vertices using probabilistic set representations such as Bloom filters. These representations are much faster to process than the original vertex sets thanks to vectorizability and small size. We use these representations as building blocks in important parallel graph mining algorithms such as Clique Counting or Clustering. When enhanced with ProbGraph, these algorithms significantly outperform tuned parallel exact baselines (up to nearly 50 x on 32 cores) while ensuring accuracy of more than 90% for many input graph datasets. Our novel bounds and algorithms based on probabilistic set representations with desirable statistical properties are of separate interest for the data analytics community. 2022 PolarFly: A Cost-Effective and Flexible Low-Diameter Topology
abstract
In this paper we present PolarFly, a diameter-2 network topology based on the Erdos-Renyi family of polarity graphs from finite geometry. This is the first known diameter-2 topology that asymptotically reaches the Moore bound on the number of nodes for a given network degree and diameter. PolarFly achieves high Moore bound efficiency even for the moderate radixes commonly seen in current and near-future routers, reaching more than 96% of the theoretical peak. It also offers more feasible router degrees than the state-of-the-art solutions, greatly adding to the selection of scalable diameter-2 networks. PolarFly enjoys many other topological properties highly relevant in practice, such as a modular design and expandability that allow incremental growth in network size without rewiring the whole network. Our evaluation shows that PolarFly outperforms competitive networks in terms of scalability, cost and performance for various traffic patterns.
