2026 IGIANet: Illumination Guided Implicit Alignment Network for Infrared-Visible UAV Detection
abstract
Visible-Infrared (RGB-IR) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) object detection integrates complementary cues from visible and infrared sensors, offering broad application potential. However, due to sensor parallax, it still faces the challenge of weak spatial misalignment, which significantly limits its performance in UAV-based object detection. Existing methods emphasize strict alignment, overlooking spectral heterogeneity under varying illumination. To address these issues, we propose the Illumination Guided Implicit Alignment Network (IGIANet) to mitigate modality heterogeneity without explicit alignment. Specifically, we integrate three novel modules. First, we propose an illumination-guided frequency modulation module that adaptively allocates fusion weights to visible and infrared features based on global illumination estimation, effectively alleviating modality imbalance under varying lighting conditions. Second, we introduce a frequency-guided cross-modality differential enhancement module, which computes differential cues across frequency domains to enhance complementary information and highlight weakly aligned and low-contrast regions. Finally, we introduce an implicit alignment-driven dynamic fusion module that actively estimates offsets and generates dynamic, position-adaptive fusion kernels to align and fuse modalities. Extensive experiments demonstrate that IGIANet outperforms state-of-the-art models on various benchmarks, achieving 80.9% mAP on DroneVehicle, 57.1% mAP on VEDAI, and 49.4% mAP on FLIR.

2026 Neural Outline Cache for Real-time Anti-aliasing Font Rendering
abstract
Neural textures have emerged as pivotal assets in next-generation neural rendering pipelines. However, hardware limitations and programming interface constraints lead to suboptimal performance in multi-instance real-time rendering scenarios. This bottleneck becomes particularly acute for texture-intensive tasks such as font rendering. To address this, we propose Neural Outline Cache (NOC), a novel neural font texture supporting real-time anti-aliased rendering and procedural editing within modern neural graphics pipelines. NOC's lightweight network leverages multi-resolution hash encoding to cache spline-derived SDFs, delivering anti-aliased rendering via standard graphics pipelines. For massive-instance scalability, our cache buffer layout (CBL) and batch-fused inference (BFI), tailored for NOC, mitigate neural texture streaming bottlenecks. We constructed an evaluation dataset using five font styles. In offline rendering, our proposed method achieves overall average results of 57.35 dB PSNR, 0.998 SSIM, and 1.1584e-3 pixel RMSE, while maintaining approximately 0.5ms frame latency with 500 real-time instances. To demonstrate its versatility, we integrated a procedural editor for visual effects editing of NOC textures. These results all prove that NOC is a reliable, production-ready neural asset.

2026 Exploiting All Mamba Fusion for Efficient RGB-D Tracking
abstract
Despite the progress made through deep learning, existing Visual Object Tracking (VOT) frameworks struggle with real-world challenges. Recent approaches incorporate additional modalities like Depth, Thermal Infrared, and Language to enhance the robustness of VOT, particularly with the improvement of the depth sensor precision, facilitating RGB-D tracking. However, current RGB-D trackers often copy RGB tracking paradigms, leading to inefficiency due to two-stream architectures that fail to exploit heterogeneous features, and reliance on simplistic or large-parameter fusion methods. To address these challenges, we propose AMTrack, a one-stream RGB-D tracker leveraging Mamba's linear complexity for simultaneous feature extraction and two-stage cross-modal feature fusion. Our innovation also includes a low-parameter Multimodal Mix Mamba (3M) module, which optimizes deep feature fusion and reduces computational overhead. The advantage of the 3M module stems from our Multimodal State Space Model (MSSM), a multimodal feature interaction component reconstructed based on SSM. Experiments across multiple RGB-D tracking datasets indicate that AMTrack achieves superior performance with lower parameters and memory demands compared to state-of-the-arts.

2026 YOLO-FCE: A feature and clustering enhanced object detection model for species classification
abstract
Australia harbours a rich and unique diversity of wildlife, constituting a vital component of the nation’s ecological heritage. Accurate species identification in expansive and remote natural environments remains a significant challenge. In this study, we propose YOLO-Feature and Clustering Enhanced (YOLO-FCE), an improved model based on the YOLOv9 architecture. We conducted a series of cluster-distance-based analyses to evaluate and enhance the model’s feature extraction capabilities. The proposed model was trained and tested on a dataset containing 50 Australian animal species, with 700 images per species, resulting in a total of 35,000 images. YOLO-FCE achieved a mean Average Precision (mAP50:95) of 87.5% and a precision of 98.2%. On a separate validation set of previously unseen images, it attained a recognition accuracy of 91.29% with an average confidence score of 0.801. Compared with baseline models including YOLOv9, YOLOv11, and Faster R-CNN evaluated on the same dataset, YOLO-FCE demonstrated robust performance.

2026 Towards Evolutionary Differential Privacy in Cross-Platform Spatial Crowdsourcing
abstract
The development of mobile web services has brought significant attention to spatial crowdsourcing. The uneven distribution of tasks and workers has led to recent research on Cross-Platform Spatial Crowdsourcing (CPSC), aiming for a multi-win situation for platforms, workers, and task requesters. Previous studies on CPSC problems focused on task assignment and worker selection performance, overlooking the importance of privacy preservation. This article addresses the existing challenges of privacy preservation and service quality by formulating a Privacy-Preserving Cross-Platform Spatial Crowdsourcing (PP-CPSC) problem and proves it to be NP-hard. We propose an Evolutionary Differential Privacy (Evo-DP) approach to optimize PP-CPSC. Evo-DP’s evolutionary framework enables efficient and flexible optimization of privacy budget allocation. Within Evo-DP, each solution to the privacy budget allocation is represented as an individual in the population. To approximate the optimal solution, three evolutionary operations—mutation, crossover, and scaling—are employed for population updates, along with a selection process. A hybrid population model is introduced to balance exploration and exploitation abilities. Experimental results demonstrate Evo-DP’s superiority over previous strategies in terms of solution quality, convergence speed, and scalability.

2026 Transformer-Enhanced Adaptive Graph Convolutional Network for Traffic Flow Prediction
abstract
Traffic flow prediction is vital in urban traffic management, planning, and development. With the continuous advancement of urbanization, there is an increasing demand for traffic flow prediction models to achieve higher accuracy and long-range forecasting capabilities. Against this backdrop, traditional methods that rely on local feature extraction and static spatial graph construction often fall short of expectations. This highlights the urgent need for advanced approaches to dynamically model spatio-temporal features while capturing global dependencies, effectively meeting the demands of complex traffic flow prediction tasks. To achieve this, we propose the Transformer-Enhanced Adaptive Graph Convolutional Network (T-AGCN), a novel model designed to capture global temporal relationships and dynamically extract rich spatial information. T-AGCN incorporates an Adaptive Graph Learner module to model dynamic relationships among traffic nodes and a Transformer-Based Spatio-Temporal graph convolutional module to capture long-range temporal dependencies in historical traffic data effectively. These innovations enable T-AGCN to jointly learn dynamic spatial interactions and complex temporal patterns, offering a comprehensive representation of traffic network dynamics. We evaluate T-AGCN on three real-world datasets, PeMSD7(M), PeMS08, and METR-LA. The experimental results demonstrate that T-AGCN, inspired by the baseline model Spatial-Temporal Graph Convolutional Network (STGCN), significantly enhances its design. Moreover, T-AGCN consistently outperforms state-of-the-art models, including the Transformer-Based Interactive Temporal and Adaptive Network (TITAN) and the Spatial-Temporal Decoupled Masked Autoencoder (STD-MAE). The implementation is available on GitHub at https://github.com/time1722/T-AGCN .

2026 ITCoHD-MRec: An Independent Topological Preference-Aware and Cooperative Hypergraph Diffusion-Based Multimodal Recommender Model
abstract
Multimodal recommendation provides richer and more accurate personalized recommendations by jointly modeling user’s historical behaviors and different modality of items, such as text, image, audio, and video in online platforms. Most existing work of multimodal recommendation focuses on leveraging modal features and modal correlation graph structures to learn user preferences. Due to insufficient exploration of user collaborative preferences and the noise during high-order multimodal data connections, valuable information may be lost, leading to deviations in understanding user preferences. Therefore, an I ndependent T opological Preference-Aware and Co operative H ypergraph D iffusion-based M ultimodal Rec ommender Model (ITCoHD-MRec) is necessary for online platforms. This article aims to develop an ITCoHD-MRec that incorporates topological perception as well as generative diffusion models in multimodal hypergraph recommendation to make the model more adaptive and robust in complex environments. Firstly, leveraging a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN), the model independently captures user preference representations for both collaborative relevance and modal relevance from the user-item interaction graph, which contains ID embeddings and modal features. This enables the extraction of deeper associations between users and items. Secondly, leveraging topological pruning techniques, the model learns differentiated features in different modal blocks to prevent node representations from becoming homogenized. This helps further identify user preferred connectivity patterns and removes redundant noisy connections. Finally, by employing the diffusion model, information regarding the higher-order interaction patterns between attributes and items within the hypergraph structure is propagated. This effectively captures the potential global dependencies between attributes and items, thereby providing deeper associations enriched with more substantial semantic information for subsequent recommendation tasks. The model autonomously learns different features and higher-order connectivity of nodes, which enables the model to obtain a wider and more accurate perception of user preferences in complex interaction environments. Experimental comparisons with 15 models on four real datasets—Baby, Sports, Clothing, and Electronics show that the model improves the recall by 0.85%–3.57% and the normalized discounted cumulative gain by 2.31%–3.43%, which validates the effectiveness of ITCoHD-MRec.

2026 A Novel Multidynamic Domain Adaptation Transfer Learning Method for Fault Diagnosis of Bearings With Insufficient Labeled Data
abstract
Recently, intelligent diagnosis methods for rotating machines have achieved prominent results. Existing intelligent methods rely on two conditions: 1) massive labeled data is necessary during training process; 2) the data of application scenarios and training data is under the same working condition. In some actual industrial scenarios, however, labeled samples are insufficient and working conditions are variable. To address this problem, we propose a novel intelligent fault diagnosis method named Multi Dynamic Domain adaptation Network (MDDAN) based on transfer learning, which can diagnose bearing fault with insufficient labeled data under varying working conditions. The crucial architecture of the proposed MDDAN is a feature extractor module and a multi adaptation module, which are designed to learn domain-invariant features with insufficient labeled data. Furthermore, the idea of adversarial training is introduced by the domain discriminators part of the multi adaptation module, which can improve the domain adaptation performance. To balance the contributions of global domain and sub domain discriminators, we add a dynamic adaptation strategy to domain adaptation module. Finally, Pareto-Efficient optimization is introduced to adaptively coordinate multi losses and metrics that further improves the stability and domain adaptation ability of MDDAN. The feasibility and effectiveness of MDDAN are verified on three datasets through a variety of scenarios transfer experiments.

2025 SecureGraphFL: A Privacy-Preserving and Attack-Resilient Federated Learning Framework for Traffic Prediction
abstract
Traffic prediction is a critical research topic with significant transportation management and planning implications. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have gained widespread use in traffic prediction due to their ability to capture relationships between different traffic sensors effectively. However, traditional centralized learning approaches struggle to meet the increasing demand for user data privacy. While federated learning (FL) addresses these privacy concerns, it introduces new challenges, particularly when one or more clients are compromised by malicious attacks or single-point failures, leading to significant degradation in global model performance. To address these issues, we propose SecureGraphFL, a federated learning framework based on graph convolutional networks (GCNs) and actor-critic networks that ensures security while maintaining high predictive accuracy. SecureGraphFL introduces three key innovations: (1) incorporating a parallel speed difference prediction task to enhance prediction performance, (2) utilizing a cosine similarity-based graph construction method to more effectively capture patterns from similar traffic sensors, and (3) designing an actor-critic network-based client selection mechanism to exclude malicious clients, ensuring the stability of the global model. Experiments on two open-source datasets, PEMS-D7 and METR-LA, demonstrate that in the absence of malicious or failed clients, SecureGraphFL matches state-of-the-art centralized methods and significantly outperforms traditional FL algorithms like FedAVG and FedATT. Moreover, in scenarios involving malicious clients, our client selection mechanism effectively mitigates their impact, maintaining performance levels comparable to those without any malicious activity. 2025 ABG-NAS: Adaptive bayesian genetic neural architecture search for graph representation learning
abstract
• We propose ABG-NAS, an adaptive NAS framework for graph representation learning. • A novel genetic search strategy dynamically balances exploration and exploitation. • Bayesian optimization is embedded to tune hyperparameters during the search process. • Our method outperforms SOTA GNAS methods on four benchmark graph datasets. • ABG-NAS achieves high F1 scores on both sparse and dense real-world graph structures. Effective and efficient graph representation learning is essential for enabling critical downstream tasks, such as node classification, link prediction, and subgraph search. However, existing graph neural network (GNN) architectures often struggle to adapt to diverse and complex graph structures, limiting their ability to produce structure-aware and task-discriminative representations. To address this challenge, we propose ABG-NAS, a novel framework for automated graph neural network architecture search tailored for efficient graph representation learning. ABG-NAS encompasses three key components: a Comprehensive Architecture Search Space (CASS), an Adaptive Genetic Optimization Strategy (AGOS), and a Bayesian-Guided Tuning Module (BGTM). CASS systematically explores diverse propagation ( P ) and transformation ( T ) operations, enabling the discovery of GNN architectures capable of capturing intricate graph characteristics. AGOS dynamically balances exploration and exploitation, ensuring search efficiency and preserving solution diversity. BGTM further optimizes hyperparameters periodically, enhancing the robustness and scalability of the resulting architectures to both large-scale graphs and high-complexity models. Empirical evaluations on benchmark datasets (Cora, PubMed, Citeseer, and CoraFull) demonstrate that ABG-NAS consistently outperforms both manually designed GNNs and state-of-the-art neural architecture search (NAS) methods. These results highlight the potential of ABG-NAS to advance graph representation learning by providing adaptive solutions that scale effectively across varying graph sizes and architectural complexities. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/sserranw/ABG-NAS .

2025 Consistency-Guided Adaptive Alternating Training for Semi-Supervised Salient Object Detection
abstract
This paper presents a novel approach that leverages two models to integrate features from numerous unlabeled images, addressing the challenge of semi-supervised salient object detection (SSOD). Unlike conventional methods that rely on selecting high-quality pseudo labels, our method identifies the model that produces consistent predictions for original images and their color transformation versions from two models to infer reliable pseudo labels for all unlabeled images, improving the diversity of the training set. Specifically, we propose adaptive selection indicators to quantify prediction differences and guide the updates of the two models using the unlabeled set alternatively. Initially, two models used in our framework are trained on the labeled set. Once the adaptive selection indicator conditions are satisfied, one model is designated as the proxy, generating pseudo labels, while the other serves as the saliency model, which is further trained using these pseudo labels. Subsequently, the updated saliency model optimizes the proxy model’s parameters according to another adaptive selection indicator. Experimental results and ablation studies on six benchmark salient object detection datasets confirm the effectiveness and robustness of our method. Our approach achieves performance comparable to recent fully supervised methods while using only one eighth of the labeled data, demonstrating its potential for efficient and scalable SSOD. This paper is publicly available athttps://github.com/Liyuan0905/CATNet.

2025 Multiobjective Privacy-Preserving Task Assignment in Spatial Crowdsourcing
abstract
Location information is crucial for efficient task assignment in spatial crowdsourcing, but sharing such information raises privacy concerns. Differential privacy (DP) offers a solution by protecting location privacy while preserving data usefulness. Existing DP-based spatial crowdsourcing frameworks have two main limitations: 1) they fail to provide personalized privacy preservation for workers and 2) they prioritize incentive mechanisms (such as utility maximization and cost minimization) while overlooking quality control. To address these limitations, we formulate the multiobjective privacy-preserving task assignment (MP-TA) problem. This problem aims to maximize both incentives and quality while meeting service rate requirements and ensuring personalized privacy protection for workers. Accordingly, we present a three-phase framework comprising worker proposal, candidate worker selection, and task assignment optimization. To generate high-quality eligible solutions for both objectives, we introduce a distributed cooperative co-evolutionary multiobjective memetic algorithm (DCC-MMA) based on sequential subproblem division and knee-driven migration operation. Matching-based crossover, matching-based mutation, and fix operations are designed to enhance search efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate DCC-MMA's superiority in solution quality, convergence speed, and scalability compared to state-of-the-art algorithms.

2025 Mask-Guided Frequency Feature Fusion for Visible-Infrared Remote Sensing Object Detection
abstract
Visible-infrared remote sensing object detection aims to achieve all-weather object detection by leveraging the complementary information from paired visible and infrared (RGB-IR) images. However, modality differences and weak alignment often limit its performance. Existing methods largely neglect the frequency discrepancies between modalities and require strict alignment, increasing complexity. To address these challenges, this study proposes a novel mask-guided frequency feature fusion (MGFF) method for RGB-IR object detection in remote sensing. Specifically, we develop a feature frequency decomposition and enhancement module using wavelet transform to reduce modality differences between RGB and IR images by restructuring and enhancing their frequency components. Additionally, we introduce a mask-guided feature reconstruction module and a feature-guided consistency loss, ensuring that even under weak alignment, the focus remains on integrating the target features from different modalities. Meanwhile, this loss is used to guide the reconstruction of features from different modalities. Finally, We design a multi-directional perception cross-modality fusion module to achieve deep fusion of multimodal information, which enhances object perception from different directions across modalities. Extensive evaluations on the widely recognized RGB-IR remote sensing benchmarks, including DroneVehicle and VEDAI, as well as the RGB-IR pedestrian dataset KAIST, substantiate the effectiveness of the proposed MGFF method. The results consistently demonstrate that the MGFF achieves a superior performance in terms of detection accuracy and robustness compared to existing state-of-the-art approaches.

2025 Open-Vocabulary Multi-Object Tracking With Domain Generalized and Temporally Adaptive Features
abstract
Open-vocabulary multi-object tracking (OVMOT) is a cutting research direction within the multi-object tracking field. It employs large multi-modal models to effectively address the challenge of tracking unseen objects within dynamic visual scenes. While models require robust domain generalization and temporal adaptability, OVTrack, the only existing open-vocabulary multi-object tracker, relies solely on static appearance information and lacks these crucial adaptive capabilities. In this paper, we propose OVSORT, a new framework designed to improve domain generalization and temporal information processing. Specifically, we first propose the Adaptive Contextual Normalization (ACN) technique in OVSORT, which dynamically adjusts the feature maps based on the dataset's statistical properties, thereby fine-tuning our model's to improve domain generalization. Then, we introduce motion cues for the first time. Using our Joint Motion and Appearance Tracking (JMAT) strategy, we obtain a joint similarity measure and subsequently apply the Hungarian algorithm for data association. Finally, our Hierarchical Adaptive Feature Update (HAFU) strategy adaptively adjusts feature updates according to the current state of each trajectory, which greatly improves the utilization of temporal information. Extensive experiments on the TAO validation set and test set confirm the superiority of OVSORT, which significantly improves the handling of novel and base classes. It surpasses existing methods in terms of accuracy and generalization, setting a new state-of-the-art for OVMOT.

2024 CADIF-OSN: Detecting Cloned Accounts with Missing Profile Attributes on Online Social Networks
abstract
The growth of online social networks (OSNs) has become increasingly significant. Potential cloned accounts on these platforms raise serious concerns due to the risks they pose to user privacy and security. Previous works in the detection of cloned accounts on OSNs do not yield satisfactory results and lack consideration of the impact of missing attributes on the detection process. We propose cloned account detection with imputation framework for online social networks (CADIF-OSN) to accurately find potential cloned accounts on OSNs. This framework enables the accurate identification of potential cloned accounts on OSNs by leveraging their public profile information, even in cases where some of the information may not be accessible. The framework comprises four key components: 1) Fuzzy string matching with Levenshtein Distance that quickly generates suspicious account pairs by matching all the accounts' usernames and screennames; 2) An embedded method Doc2Vec that transforms all existing profile information of accounts into estimable vectors; 3) A HyperImpute model that imputes the missing information; and 4) A deep-forest model that is trained to detect cloned accounts. We evaluated our framework using a Twitter dataset consisting of 3,826 pairs of cloned accounts and 70,000 normal accounts. The evaluation results demonstrate that our framework significantly surpasses existing approaches in terms of Precision and F1-score.

2024 Federated Genetic Algorithm: Two-Layer Privacy-Preserving Trajectory Data Publishing
abstract
Nowadays, trajectory data is widely available and used in various real-world applications such as urban planning, navigation services, and location-based services. However, publishing trajectory data can potentially leak sensitive information about identity, personal profiles, and social relationships, and requires privacy protection. This paper focuses on optimizing Privacy-Preserving Trajectory Data Publishing (PP-TDP) problems, addressing the limitations of existing techniques in the trade-off between privacy protection and information preservation. We propose the Federated Genetic Algorithm (FGA) in this paper, aiming to achieve better local privacy protection and global information preservation. FGA consists of multiple local optimizers and a single global optimizer. The parallel local optimizer enables the local data center to retain the original trajectory data and share only the locally anonymized outcomes. The global optimizer collects the local anonymized outcomes and further optimizes the preservation of information while achieving comprehensive privacy protection. To optimize the discrete-domain PP-TDP problems more efficiently, this paper proposes a grouping-based strategy, an intersection-based crossover operation, and a complement-based mutation operation. Experimental results demonstrate that FGA outperforms its competitors in terms of solution accuracy and search efficiency.

2024 Adaptive Aggregative Multitask Competitive Particle Swarm Optimization with Bi-Directional Asymmetric Flip Strategy for High-Dimensional Feature Selection
abstract
Evolutionary multitask optimization (EMTO) has been increasingly employed in addressing high-dimensional feature selection challenges, but current EMTO algorithms still have three deficiencies: First, in task generation, they just consider the linear correlation among features but ignore the nonlinear correlation. Second, they commonly encounter negative knowledge transfer. Third, they are hard to strike an optimal balance between global search capability and computational efficiency. This paper proposes an adaptive aggregative multitask competitive swarm optimization (AAMCSO) for high-dimensional feature selection, which contains three novel and effective strategies to address the above deficiencies. Firstly, AAMCSO proposes a linear-and-nonlinear-correlation-based task generation strategy to generate multiple tasks while considering both linear and nonlinear correlation between features and labels. Secondly, AAMCSO proposes an adaptive aggregative knowledge transfer strategy to adaptively transfer positive knowledge among related tasks. Thirdly, AAMCSO proposes a bi-directional asymmetric flip strategy to guide the population to search for a smaller feature subset with better classification performance. We have conducted extensive comparative experiments on AAMCSO and multiple state-of-the-art feature selection algorithms in high-dimensional feature selection problems with up to 10000 dimensions. The results show that AAMCSO achieves significantly superior performance to the state-of-the-art comparison algorithms in terms of both classification accuracy and feature number.

2024 Optimising Insider Threat Prediction: Exploring BiLSTM Networks and Sequential Features
abstract
Abstract Insider threats pose a critical risk to organisations, impacting their data, processes, resources, and overall security. Such significant risks arise from individuals with authorised access and familiarity with internal systems, emphasising the potential for insider threats to compromise the integrity of organisations. Previous research has addressed the challenge by pinpointing malicious actions that have already occurred but provided limited assistance in preventing those risks. In this research, we introduce a novel approach based on bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) networks that effectively captures and analyses the patterns of individual actions and their sequential dependencies. The focus is on predicting whether an individual would be a malicious insider in a future day based on their daily behavioural records over the previous several days. We analyse the performance of the four supervised learning algorithms on manual features, sequential features, and the ground truth of the day with different combinations. In addition, we investigate the performance of different RNN models, such as RNN, LSTM, and BiLSTM, in incorporating these features. Moreover, we explore the performance of different predictive lengths on the ground truth of the day and different embedded lengths for the sequential features. All the experiments are conducted on the CERT r4.2 dataset. Experiment results show that BiLSTM has the highest performance in combining these features.

2024 A Novel Evolutionary Algorithm With Column and Sub-Block Local Search for Sudoku Puzzles
abstract
Sudoku puzzles are not only popular intellectual games but also NP-hard combinatorial problems related to various real-world applications, which have attracted much attention worldwide. Although many efficient tools, such as evolutionary computation (EC) algorithms, have been proposed for solving Sudoku puzzles, they still face great challenges with regard to hard and large instances of Sudoku puzzles. Therefore, to efficiently solve Sudoku puzzles, this paper proposes a genetic algorithm (GA)-based method with a novel local search technology called local search-based GA (LSGA). The LSGA includes three novel design aspects. First, it adopts a matrix coding scheme to represent individuals and designs the corresponding crossover and mutation operations. Second, a novel local search strategy based on column search and sub-block search is proposed to increase the convergence speed of the GA. Third, an elite population learning mechanism is proposed to let the population evolve by learning the historical optimal solution. Based on the above technologies, LSGA can greatly improve the search ability for solving complex Sudoku puzzles. LSGA is compared with some state-of-the-art algorithms at Sudoku puzzles of different difficulty levels and the results show that LSGA performs well in terms of both convergence speed and success rates on the tested Sudoku puzzle instances.

2024 Evolutionary Dynamic Database Partitioning Optimization for Privacy and Utility
abstract
Distributed database system (DDBS) technology has shown its advantages with respect to query processing efficiency, scalability, and reliability. Moreover, by partitioning attributes of sensitive associations into different fragments, DDBSs can be used to protect data privacy. However, it is complex to design a DDBS when one has to optimize privacy and utility in a time-varying environment. This paper proposes a distributed prediction-randomness framework for the evolutionary dynamic multiobjective partitioning optimization of databases. In the proposed framework, two sub-populations contain individuals representing database partitioning solutions. One sub-population utilizes a Markov chain-based predictor to predict discrete-domain solutions for database partitioning when the environment changes, and the other sub-population utilizes the random initialization operator to maintain population diversity. In addition, a knee-driven migration operator is utilized to exchange information between two sub-populations. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the competing solutions with respect to accuracy, convergence speed, and scalability.

2024 Distributed Cooperative Coevolution of Data Publishing Privacy and Transparency
abstract
Data transparency is beneficial to data participants’ awareness, users’ fairness, and research work’s reproducibility. However, when addressing transparency requirements, we cannot ignore data privacy. This article defines the multi-objective data publishing (MODP) problem, optimizing data privacy and transparency at the same time. Accordingly, we propose a distributed cooperative coevolutionary genetic algorithm (DCCGA) to optimize the MODP problem. In the population of DCCGA, each individual represents an anonymization solution to MODP. Three modules in DCCGA, i.e., grouping module, cooperative coevolutionary module, and evolving module, are proposed for distributed sub-population update and evaluation, improving DCCGA’s optimization performance and parallel efficiency. Moreover, a matrix-based crossover operator and a matrix-based mutation operator are designed to exchange and adjust anonymization information in the individuals efficiently. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DCCGA outperforms the competitors with respect to solution accuracy, convergence speed, and scalability. Besides, we verify the effectiveness of all the proposed components in DCCGA.

2024 A Compact Vulnerability Knowledge Graph for Risk Assessment
abstract
Software vulnerabilities, also known as flaws, bugs or weaknesses, are common in modern information systems, putting critical data of organizations and individuals at cyber risk. Due to the scarcity of resources, initial risk assessment is becoming a necessary step to prioritize vulnerabilities and make better decisions on remediation, mitigation, and patching. Datasets containing historical vulnerability information are crucial digital assets to enable AI-based risk assessments. However, existing datasets focus on collecting information on individual vulnerabilities while simply storing them in relational databases, disregarding their structural connections. This article constructs a compact vulnerability knowledge graph, VulKG, containing over 276 K nodes and 1 M relationships to represent the connections between vulnerabilities, exploits, affected products, vendors, referred domain names, and more. We provide a detailed analysis of VulKG modeling and construction, demonstrating VulKG-based query and reasoning, and providing a use case of applying VulKG to a vulnerability risk assessment task, i.e., co-exploitation behavior discovery. Experimental results demonstrate the value of graph connections in vulnerability risk assessment tasks. VulKG offers exciting opportunities for more novel and significant research in areas related to vulnerability risk assessment. 2024 XKT: Toward Explainable Knowledge Tracing Model With Cognitive Learning Theories for Questions of Multiple Knowledge Concepts
abstract
Deep learning (DL) based knowledge tracing (KT) models have challenges for uninterpretable prediction and parameter representation in educational applications, though they achieved remarkable outcomes in predicting the exercise performance of students. This paper proposes a novel knowledge tracing model of high precision and interpretability (namedXKT) for questions with multiple knowledge concepts based on cognitive learning theories and multidimensional item response theory (MIRT). TheXKTconsists of three differentiable network components: multi-feature embedding, cognition processing network, andMIRT-based neural predictor, which aim to provide an explainable prediction of student exercise performance. Specifically, inXKT, multi-feature embedding learns the rich semantic representation (e.g., knowledge distribution information) to enhance knowledge tracing using a cognition processing network. The cognition processing network performs selective perception, ability memory processing, and long-term knowledge memory processing to ensure the explainable factor representation for theMIRT-based neural predictor. Lastly, theMIRT-based neural predictor employs psychometric parameters to interpret student exercise predictions better. Extensive experiments on four real-world datasets show thatXKToutperforms existingKTmethods in predicting future learner responses. Moreover, ablation studies further show thatXKToffers good interpretability of student performance predictions with multiple knowledge concepts, indicating excellent potential in real-world educational applications.

2024 A heterogeneous graph-based semi-supervised learning framework for access control decision-making
abstract
Abstract For modern information systems, robust access control mechanisms are vital in safeguarding data integrity and ensuring the entire system’s security. This paper proposes a novel semi-supervised learning framework that leverages heterogeneous graph neural network-based embedding to encapsulate both the intricate relationships within the organizational structure and interactions between users and resources. Unlike existing methods focusing solely on individual user and resource attributes, our approach embeds organizational and operational interrelationships into the hidden layer node embeddings. These embeddings are learned from a self-supervised link prediction task based on a constructed access control heterogeneous graph via a heterogeneous graph neural network. Subsequently, the learned node embeddings, along with the original node features, serve as inputs for a supervised access control decision-making task, facilitating the construction of a machine-learning access control model. Experimental results on the open-sourced Amazon access control dataset demonstrate that our proposed framework outperforms models using original or manually extracted graph-based features from previous works. The prepossessed data and codes are available on GitHub,facilitating reproducibility and further research endeavors.

2024 Hierarchical adaptive evolution framework for privacy-preserving data publishing
abstract
Abstract The growing need for data publication and the escalating concerns regarding data privacy have led to a surge in interest in Privacy-Preserving Data Publishing (PPDP) across research, industry, and government sectors. Despite its significance, PPDP remains a challenging NP-hard problem, particularly when dealing with complex datasets, often rendering traditional traversal search methods inefficient. Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) have emerged as a promising approach in response to this challenge, but their effectiveness, efficiency, and robustness in PPDP applications still need to be improved. This paper presents a novel Hierarchical Adaptive Evolution Framework (HAEF) that aims to optimizet-closeness anonymization through attribute generalization and record suppression using Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Differential Evolution (DE). To balance GA and DE, the first hierarchy of HAEF employs a GA-prioritized adaptive strategy enhancing exploration search. This combination aims to strike a balance between exploration and exploitation. The second hierarchy employs a random-prioritized adaptive strategy to select distinct mutation strategies, thus leveraging the advantages of various mutation strategies. Performance bencmark tests demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed technique. In 16 test instances, HAEF significantly outperforms traditional depth-first traversal search and exceeds the performance of previous state-of-the-art EAs on most datasets. In terms of overall performance, under the three privacy constraints tested, HAEF outperforms the conventional DFS search by an average of 47.78%, the state-of-the-art GA-based ID-DGA method by an average of 37.38%, and the hybrid GA-DE method by an average of 8.35% in TLEF. Furthermore, ablation experiments confirm the effectiveness of the various strategies within the framework. These findings enhance the efficiency of the data publishing process, ensuring privacy and security and maximizing data availability.

2023 Overcoming Noisy Labels in Federated Learning Through Local Self-Guiding
abstract
Federated Learning (FL) is a privacy-preserving machine learning paradigm that enables clients such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and smartphones, to train a high-performance global model jointly. However, in real-world FL deployments, carefully human-annotated labels are expensive and time-consuming. So the presence of incorrect labels (noisy labels) in the local training data of the clients is inevitable, which will cause the performance degradation of the global model. To tackle this problem, we propose a simple but effective method Local Self-Guiding (LSG) to let clients guide themselves during training in the presence of noisy labels. Specifically, LSG keeps the model from memorizing noisy labels by enhancing the confidence of model predictions. Meanwhile, it utilizes the knowledge from local historical models which haven't fit noisy patterns to extract potential ground truth labels of samples. To keep the knowledge without storing models, LSG records the exponential moving average (EMA) of model output logits at different local training epochs as self-ensemble logits on clients' devices, which will lead to negligible computation and storage overhead. Then logit-based knowledge distillation is conducted to guide the local training. Experiments on MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, CIFAR-10, ImageNet-100 with multiple noise levels, and an unbalanced noisy dataset, Clothing1M, demonstrate the resistance of LSG to noisy labels. The code of LSG is available at https://github.com/DaokuanBai/LSG-Main

2023 Evolutionary Multitasking Bi-Directional Particle Swarm Optimization for High-Dimensional Feature Selection
abstract
Feature selection is an important data processing technique, aiming to reduce the redundant and irrelevant features of data. However, as the number of features increases, feature selection algorithms based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) face the challenges of low search efficiency and huge computational consumption due to the enormous search space. A recently proposed bi-directional feature fixation (BDFF) framework for PSO has shown its effectiveness in solving high-dimensional feature selection problems, but it may mislead the particles to search in the wrong direction and requires a long time to find a small feature subset. Utilizing the prior knowledge of feature selection is expected to further enhance the performance of BDFF. Therefore, this paper first designs two tasks to introduce the prior knowledge of feature selection into BDFF while retaining its global search ability. Then, the multitasking bi-directional PSO (MBDPSO) is proposed by combining BDFF and the evolutionary multitasking optimization (EMTO) technique, which can help transfer knowledge between the two tasks effectively. Experimental results on 10 public classification datasets demonstrate that the proposed MBDPSO has an excellent performance on high-dimensional feature selection problems.

2023 Anomaly Detection in Quasi-Periodic Time Series based on Automatic Data Segmentation and Attentional LSTM-CNN (Extended Abstract)
abstract
Quasi-periodic time series (QTS) exists widely in the real world, and it is important to detect the anomalies of QTS. In this paper, we propose an automatic QTS anomaly detection framework (AQADF) consisting of a two-level clustering-based QTS segmentation algorithm (TCQSA) and a hybrid attentional LSTM-CNN model (HALCM). TCQSA first automatically splits the QTS into quasi-periods which are then classified by HALCM into normal periods or anomalies. Notably, TCQSA integrates a hierarchical clustering and the k-means technique, making itself highly universal and noise-resistant. HALCM hybridizes LSTM and CNN to simultaneously extract the overall variation trends and local features of QTS for modeling its fluctuation pattern. Furthermore, we embed a trend attention gate (TAG) into the LSTM, a feature attention mechanism (FAM) and a location attention mechanism (LAM) into the CNN to finely tune the extracted variation trends and local features according to their true importance to yield a better representation of the fluctuation pattern of the QTS. On four public datasets, HALCM exceeds four state-of-the-art baselines and obtains at least 97.3% accuracy, TCQSA exceeds two cutting-edge QTS segmentation algorithms and can be applied to different types of QTSs.

2023 Australian Animal Species Selection and Image Data Collection
abstract
Using computer image-processing technology for animal identification has improved labour-intensive agriculture and animal husbandry efficiency and accuracy. Additionally, camera traps have provided researchers with abundant biodiversity and wildlife habitat conservation data. However, despite these advancements, there is still a need for taxonomic rank-based animal classification studies, and fewer datasets are available to train AI models based on taxonomic ranks. The importance of taxonomy was ignored by researchers and dataset creators in previous animal classification studies, which is the basis and prerequisite of classifying wild animal images. To this end, this paper presents a dataset labelled with the taxonomic ranking. The dataset is focused on Australian animals and includes 47 taxonomically significant animal species, each with a maximum of 600 manually labelled images. This dataset will contribute significantly to the field of animal identification, as it provides researchers and practitioners with a valuable tool to improve the efficiency and accuracy of animal identification, which can have significant implications for agriculture, animal husbandry, biodiversity research, and wildlife conservation.

2023 Bi-Directional Feature Fixation-Based Particle Swarm Optimization for Large-Scale Feature Selection
abstract
Feature selection, which aims to improve the classification accuracy and reduce the size of the selected feature subset, is an important but challenging optimization problem in data mining. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has shown promising performance in tackling feature selection problems, but still faces challenges in dealing with large-scale feature selection in Big Data environment because of the large search space. Hence, this paper proposes a bi-directional feature fixation (BDFF) framework for PSO and provides a novel idea to reduce the search space in large-scale feature selection. BDFF uses two opposite search directions to guide particles to adequately search for feature subsets with different sizes. Based on the two different search directions, BDFF can fix the selection states of some features and then focus on the others when updating particles, thus narrowing the large search space. Besides, a self-adaptive strategy is designed to help the swarm concentrate on a more promising direction for search in different stages of evolution and achieve a balance between exploration and exploitation. Experimental results on 12 widely-used public datasets show that BDFF can improve the performance of PSO on large-scale feature selection and obtain smaller feature subsets with higher classification accuracy.

2023 Distributed Differential Evolution With Adaptive Resource Allocation
abstract
Distributed differential evolution (DDE) is an efficient paradigm that adopts multiple populations for cooperatively solving complex optimization problems. However, how to allocate fitness evaluation (FE) budget resources among the distributed multiple populations can greatly influence the optimization ability of DDE. Therefore, this article proposes a novel three-layer DDE framework with adaptive resource allocation (DDE-ARA), including the algorithm layer for evolving various differential evolution (DE) populations, the dispatch layer for dispatching the individuals in the DE populations to different distributed machines, and the machine layer for accommodating distributed computers. In the DDE-ARA framework, three novel methods are further proposed. First, a general performance indicator (GPI) method is proposed to measure the performance of different DEs. Second, based on the GPI, a FE allocation (FEA) method is proposed to adaptively allocate the FE budget resources from poorly performing DEs to well-performing DEs for better search efficiency. This way, the GPI and FEA methods achieve the ARA in the algorithm layer. Third, a load balance strategy is proposed in the dispatch layer to balance the FE burden of different computers in the machine layer for improving load balance and algorithm speedup. Moreover, theoretical analyses are provided to show why the proposed DDE-ARA framework can be effective and to discuss the lower bound of its optimization error. Extensive experiments are conducted on all the 30 functions of CEC 2014 competitions at 10, 30, 50, and 100 dimensions, and some state-of-the-art DDE algorithms are adopted for comparisons. The results show the great effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework and the three novel methods.

2023 Knowledge-Driven Cybersecurity Intelligence: Software Vulnerability Coexploitation Behavior Discovery
abstract
Coexploitation behavior, referring to multiple software vulnerabilities being exploited jointly by one or more exploits, brings enormous challenges to the prevention and remediation of cyberattacks. Leveraging the latest advances in graph-driven intelligence, this article formulates vulnerability coexploitation behavior discovery as a link prediction problem between vulnerability entities within a vulnerability knowledge graph. We propose a modality-aware graph convolutional network (MAGCN) module to embed multimodality entity attributes and topological graph connectivity features into a unified lower dimensional feature space to boost link prediction performance. We further design a graph knowledge transfer learning (GKTL) strategy to transfer knowledge between subgraphs extracted from the same knowledge graph. Experimental results on a real-world dataset containing coexploitation incidents between 1995 and 2021 show that MAGCN achieved 81.34% on theF1 score when applying the GKTL strategy, superior to other graph neural network modules, such as GCN, GraphSAGE, EdgeGCN, and GINGCN.

abstract
Abstract Knowledge graph, as an extension of graph data structure, is being used in a wide range of areas as it can store interrelated data and reveal interlinked relationships between different objects within a large system. This paper proposes an algorithm to construct an access control knowledge graph from user and resource attributes. Furthermore, an online learning framework for access control decision-making is proposed based on the constructed knowledge graph. 2022 A Probabilistic Niching Evolutionary Computation Framework Based on Binary Space Partitioning
abstract
Multimodal optimization problems have multiple satisfactory solutions to identify. Most of the existing works conduct the search based on the information of the current population, which can be inefficient. This article proposes a probabilistic niching evolutionary computation framework that guides the future search based on more sufficient historical information, in order to locate diverse and high-quality solutions. A binary space partition tree is built to structurally organize the space visiting information. Based on the tree, a probabilistic niching strategy is defined to reinforce exploration and exploitation by making full use of the structural historical information. The proposed framework is universal for incorporating various baseline niching algorithms. In this article, we integrate the proposed framework with two niching algorithms: 1) a distance-based differential evolution algorithm and 2) a topology-based particle swarm optimization algorithm. The two new algorithms are evaluated on 20 multimodal optimization test functions. The experimental results show that the proposed framework helps the algorithms obtain competitive performance. They outperform a number of state-of-the-art niching algorithms on most of the test functions.

On four public datasets, HALCM exceeds four state-of-the-art baselines and obtains at least 97.3 percent accuracy, TCQSA outperforms two cutting-edge QTS segmentation algorithms and can be applied to different types of QTSs. Additionally, the effectiveness of the attention mechanisms is quantitatively and qualitatively demonstrated.

2022 A Coevolutionary Estimation of Distribution Algorithm for Group Insurance Portfolio
abstract
With the rapid development of the insurance industry, more diverse insurance products are produced for consumers. Insurance portfolio problems have received increasing attention. While most studies focus on insurance portfolio problem for a single insured, insurance portfolio problems for a specific group of insured are even more intricate but little attention has been paid to. In this article, we propose a group insurance portfolio model for investment allocation of several insurance policies so that the total payout of the whole group can be maximized. The statistical average value of each parameter is considered in the model to approximate the expectation payout of the group insurance portfolio problem. To solve this problem, a coevolutionary estimation of distribution algorithm (EDA) utilizing the divide-and-conquer strategy is proposed. First, as the payout of each insured under a certain portfolio plan can be calculated separately, the proposed approach decomposes the group insurance portfolio problem into several single-insured insurance portfolio problems. In this way, the dimension of the optimization problem becomes lower compared to the original problem. An adaptive EDA is proposed to optimize the portfolio plan of each insured independently. Second, the group insurance portfolio problem remains a nonseparable problem since the investment amount of each insured is limited by the total investable amount of the whole group. A particle swarm optimization algorithm is adopted to cooperate with the EDA to optimize the proportion of allocation to each insured. The proposed algorithm is verified on various scenarios. The experimental results validate that the proposed approach is effective for the group insurance portfolio problem.

2021 Historical Information-based Differential Evolution for Dynamic Optimization Problem
abstract
Dynamic optimization problems (DOP) widely exist in many application fields and remain a challenge. The multi-population evolutionary computation approach is an efficient framework for solving the DOPs. The key issue of the multi-population approach is how to efficiently generate subpopulations in new environment by well reusing historical information in past environments. However, most existing works try to divide the population into small ones merely considering the individuals' distribution, which may have the limitation that the partition leads to the unbalanced computational resources allocation among subpopulations. To address this limitation, we propose a historical information-based differential evolution (HIDE) to effectively solve the DOP. Firstly, a region-based subpopulation initialization (RSI) strategy is proposed to generate multiple subpopulations in the new environment in a balanced way. By initializing multiple subpopulations in different regions of the search space, the diversity of the population is enhanced, which is helpful to solve the DOP with multiple peaks. Secondly, to fully make use of the found peaks of the previous environments, an archive-based historical information reuse (AHIR) strategy is put forward to manage and reuse the historical information to guide the search in the new environment. Experiments have been carried out on the moving peaks benchmark (MPB), which is a commonly used DOP test suite. Experimental results show that the proposed HIDE algorithm generally outperforms the classic DE algorithms with different parameter settings and some existing competitive state-of-the-art DOP approaches.

2021 Set-Based Adaptive Distributed Differential Evolution for Anonymity-Driven Database Fragmentation
abstract
Abstract By breaking sensitive associations between attributes, database fragmentation can protect the privacy of outsourced data storage. Database fragmentation algorithms need prior knowledge of sensitive associations in the tackled database and set it as the optimization objective. Thus, the effectiveness of these algorithms is limited by prior knowledge. Inspired by the anonymity degree measurement in anonymity techniques such as k-anonymity, an anonymity-driven database fragmentation problem is defined in this paper. For this problem, a set-based adaptive distributed differential evolution (S-ADDE) algorithm is proposed. S-ADDE adopts an island model to maintain population diversity. Two set-based operators, i.e., set-based mutation and set-based crossover, are designed in which the continuous domain in the traditional differential evolution is transferred to the discrete domain in the anonymity-driven database fragmentation problem. Moreover, in the set-based mutation operator, each individual’s mutation strategy is adaptively selected according to the performance. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed S-ADDE is significantly better than the compared approaches. The effectiveness of the proposed operators is verified.

2021 Image Preprocessing in Classification and Identification of Diabetic Eye Diseases
abstract
Diabetic eye disease (DED) is a cluster of eye problem that affects diabetic patients. Identifying DED is a crucial activity in retinal fundus images because early diagnosis and treatment can eventually minimize the risk of visual impairment. The retinal fundus image plays a significant role in early DED classification and identification. An accurate diagnostic model's development using a retinal fundus image depends highly on image quality and quantity. This paper presents a methodical study on the significance of image processing for DED classification. The proposed automated classification framework for DED was achieved in several steps: image quality enhancement, image segmentation (region of interest), image augmentation (geometric transformation), and classification. The optimal results were obtained using traditional image processing methods with a new build convolution neural network (CNN) architecture. The new built CNN combined with the traditional image processing approach presented the best performance with accuracy for DED classification problems. The results of the experiments conducted showed adequate accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity.

2021 CyberPulse++: A machine learning-based security framework for detecting link flooding attacks in software defined networks
abstract
A new class of link flooding attacks (LFA) can cut off internet connections of target links by employing legitimate flows to congest these without being detected. LFA is especially powerful in disrupting traffic in software-defined networks if the control channel is targeted. Most of the existing solutions work by conducting a deep packet-level inspection of the physical network links. Therefore these techniques incur a significant performance overhead, are reactive, and result in damage to the network before a delayed defense is mounted. Machine learning (ML) of captured network statistics is emerging as a promising, lightweight, and proactive solution to defend against LFA. In this paper, we propose a ML-based security framework, CyberPulse++, that utilizes a pretrained ML repository to test captured network statistics in real-time to detect abnormal path performance on network links. It effectively tackles several challenges faced by network security solutions such as the practicality of large-scale network-level monitoring and collection of network status information. The framework can use a wide variety of algorithms for training the ML repository and allows the analyst a birds-eye view by generating interactive graphs to investigate an attack in its ramp-up stage. An extensive evaluation demonstrates that the framework offers limited bandwidth and computational overhead in proactively detecting and defending against LFA in real-time.

2021 Secure $k$k-NN Query on Encrypted Cloud Data with Multiple Keys
abstract
The k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) query is a fundamental primitive in spatial and multimedia databases. It has extensive applications in location-based services, classification & clustering and so on. With the promise of confidentiality and privacy, massive data are increasingly outsourced to cloud in the encrypted form for enjoying the advantages of cloud computing (e.g., reduce storage and query processing costs). Recently, many schemes have been proposed to support k-NN query on encrypted cloud data. However, prior works have all assumed that the query users (QUs) are fully-trusted and know the key of the data owner (DO), which is used to encrypt and decrypt outsourced data. The assumptions are unrealistic in many situations, since many users are neither trusted nor knowing the key. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme for secure k-NN query on encrypted cloud data with multiple keys, in which the DO and each QU all hold their own different keys, and do not share them with each other; meanwhile, the DO encrypts and decrypts outsourced data using the key of his own. Our scheme is constructed by a distributed two trapdoors public-key cryptosystem (DT-PKC) and a set of protocols of secure two-party computation, which not only preserves the data confidentiality and query privacy but also supports the offline data owner. Our extensive theoretical and experimental evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme in terms of security and performance.

2021 Distributed Memetic Algorithm for Outsourced Database Fragmentation
abstract
Data privacy and utility are two essential requirements in outsourced data storage. Traditional techniques for sensitive data protection, such as data encryption, affect the efficiency of data query and evaluation. By splitting attributes of sensitive associations, database fragmentation techniques can help protect data privacy and improve data utility. In this article, a distributed memetic algorithm (DMA) is proposed for enhancing database privacy and utility. A balanced best random distributed framework is designed to achieve high optimization efficiency. In order to enhance global search, a dynamic grouping recombination operator is proposed to aggregate and utilize evolutionary elements; two mutation operators, namely, merge and split, are designed to help arrange and create evolutionary elements; a two-dimension selection approach is designed based on the priority of privacy and utility. Furthermore, a splicing-driven local search strategy is embedded to introduce rare utility elements without violating constraints. Extensive experiments are carried out to verify the performance of the proposed DMA. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed distributed framework and novel operators is verified.

2021 Data-Driven Evolutionary Algorithm With Perturbation-Based Ensemble Surrogates
abstract
Data-driven evolutionary algorithms (DDEAs) aim to utilize data and surrogates to drive optimization, which is useful and efficient when the objective function of the optimization problem is expensive or difficult to access. However, the performance of DDEAs relies on their surrogate quality and often deteriorates if the amount of available data decreases. To solve these problems, this article proposes a new DDEA framework with perturbation-based ensemble surrogates (DDEA-PES), which contain two efficient mechanisms. The first is a diverse surrogate generation method that can generate diverse surrogates through performing data perturbations on the available data. The second is a selective ensemble method that selects some of the prebuilt surrogates to form a final ensemble surrogate model. By combining these two mechanisms, the proposed DDEA-PES framework has three advantages, including larger data quantity, better data utilization, and higher surrogate accuracy. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, this article provides both theoretical and experimental analyses. For the experimental comparisons, a specific DDEA-PES algorithm is developed as an instance by adopting a genetic algorithm as the optimizer and radial basis function neural networks as the base models. The experimental results on widely used benchmarks and an aerodynamic airfoil design real-world optimization problem show that the proposed DDEA-PES algorithm outperforms some state-of-the-art DDEAs. Moreover, when compared with traditional nondata-driven methods, the proposed DDEA-PES algorithm only requires about 2% computational budgets to produce competitive results.

2021 Privacy-Preserving Task Recommendation Services for Crowdsourcing
abstract
Crowdsourcing is a distributed computing paradigm that utilizes human intelligence or resources from a crowd of workers. Existing solutions of task recommendation in crowdsourcing may leak private and sensitive information about both tasks and workers. To protect privacy, information about tasks and workers should be encrypted before being outsourced to the crowdsourcing platform, which makes the task recommendation a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving task recommendation scheme (PPTR) for crowdsourcing, which achieves the task-worker matching while preserving both task privacy and worker privacy. In PPTR, we first exploit the polynomial function to express multiple keywords of task requirements and worker interests. Then, we design a key derivation method based on matrix decomposition, to realize the multi-keyword matching between multiple requesters and multiple workers. Through PPTR, user accountability and user revocation are achieved effectively and efficiently. Extensive privacy analysis and performance evaluation show that PPTR is secure and efficient.

2021 Enhanced Branch-and-Bound Framework for a Class of Sequencing Problems
abstract
In this paper, we propose an enhanced branch-and-bound (B&B) framework for a class of sequencing problems, which aim to find a permutation of all involved elements to minimize a given objective function. We require that the sequencing problems satisfy three conditions: 1) incrementally computable; 2) monotonic; and 3) overlapping subproblems. Our enhanced B&B framework is built on the classical B&B process by introducing two techniques, i.e., dominance rules and caching search states. Following the enhanced B&B framework, we conduct empirical studies on three typical and challenging sequencing problems, i.e., quadratic traveling salesman problem, traveling repairman problem, and talent scheduling problem. The computational results demonstrate the effectiveness of our enhanced B&B framework when compared to classical B&B and some exact approaches, such as dynamic programming and constraint programming. Additional experiments are carried out to analyze different configurations of the algorithm.

2020 The effects of travel containment measures within COVID-19
abstract
The outbreak of COVID-19 has brought the world to a standstill. More than half of the world's population was in lockdown at the beginning of April. People were urged not to go out and avoid public transport. A few figures to take stock of the situation: around 4 billion people subject to various movement restrictions worldwide, air traffic is reduced by about 90% and shared mobility platforms activity reduced to 2% to 5% of their regular business. The current crisis, which is impacting both the supply and demand for transport, appears to be a privileged moment to rethink mobility and place it on a more sustainable trajectory. The Covid-19 crisis has a significant repercussion on demand and supply of mobility in Victoria as the Victorian government has put citizens in lockdown to limit the spread of COVID-19. This research aims to investigate the travel containment measures (government restrictions) taken in response to the COVID-19 emergency have on Victorian's mobility as this insight is vital to estimate parameters appropriate for the different stages of the crisis, before and after the implementation of prevention policies.

2020 Deep learning for Antisocial Behaviour Analysis on Social Media
abstract
Social Media platforms have become an imperative source of information related to urban functions and social behaviour. Analysis of social media data can provide meaningful insights into the personality and behaviour traits of its users. Behaviour studies have been typically conducted using questionnaire and survey data. Since most of our activities have moved online, our behaviour on social media has become a proxy for our real-world behaviour. In this paper, we collected data from Swarm and Twitter, two widely used social media platforms, to detect user's antisocial behaviour with a high degree of accuracy. The behaviour was then categorized into different classes of antisocial behaviour using cutting edge deep learning technology. Four different deep learning models and two different word embeddings were experimented with to achieve a final model accuracy of 99%. Visually enhanced interpretation of the classification process and the word clouds for some of the most commonly used antisocial terms are presented, along with model training and error analysis.

2020 Ensemble neural network approach detecting pain intensity from facial expressions
abstract
This paper reports on research to design an ensemble deep learning framework that integrates fine-tuned, three-stream hybrid deep neural network (i.e., Ensemble Deep Learning Model, EDLM), employing Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to extract facial image features, detect and accurately classify the pain. To develop the approach, the VGGFace is fine-tuned and integrated with Principal Component Analysis and employed to extract features in images from the Multimodal Intensity Pain database at the early phase of the model fusion. Subsequently, a late fusion, three layers hybrid CNN and recurrent neural network algorithm is developed with their outputs merged to produce image-classified features to classify pain levels. The EDLM model is then benchmarked by means of a single-stream deep learning model including several competing models based on deep learning methods. The results obtained indicate that the proposed framework is able to outperform the competing methods, applied in a multi-level pain detection database to produce a feature classification accuracy that exceeds 89 %, with a receiver operating characteristic of 93 %. To evaluate the generalization of the proposed EDLM model, the UNBC-McMaster Shoulder Pain dataset is used as a test dataset for all of the modelling experiments, which reveals the efficacy of the proposed method for pain classification from facial images. The study concludes that the proposed EDLM model can accurately classify pain and generate multi-class pain levels for potential applications in the medical informatics area, and should therefore, be explored further in expert systems for detecting and classifying the pain intensity of patients, and automatically evaluating the patients' pain level accurately.

2020 An Interactive Network for End-to-End Review Helpfulness Modeling
abstract
Abstract Review helpfulness prediction aims to prioritize online reviews by quality. Existing methods largely combine review texts and star ratings for helpfulness prediction. However, star ratings are used in a way that has either little representation capacity or limited interaction with review texts. As a result, rating information has yet to be fully exploited during the combination. This paper aims to overcome the two drawbacks. A deep interactive architecture is proposed to learn the text–rating interaction (TRI) for helpfulness modeling. TRI enlarges the representation capacity of star ratings while enhancing the influence of rating information on review texts. TRI is evaluated on six real-world domains of the Amazon 5-Core dataset. Extensive experiments demonstrate that TRI can better predict review helpfulness and beat the state of the art. Ablation studies and qualitative analysis are provided to further understand model behaviors and the learned parameters.

2020 Microaggregation Sorting Framework for K-Anonymity Statistical Disclosure Control in Cloud Computing
abstract
In cloud computing, there have led to an increase in the capability to store and record personal data (microdata) in the cloud. In most cases, data providers have no/little control that has led to concern that the personal data may be beached. Microaggregation techniques seek to protect microdata in such a way that data can be published and mined without providing any private information that can be linked to specific individuals. An optimal microaggregation method must minimize the information loss resulting from this replacement process. The challenge is how to minimize the information loss during the microaggregation process. This paper presents a sorting framework for Statistical Disclosure Control (SDC) to protect microdata in cloud computing. It consists of two stages. In the first stage, an algorithm sorts all records in a data set in a particular way to ensure that during microaggregation very dissimilar observations are never entered into the same cluster. In the second stage a microaggregation method is used to create k-anonymous clusters while minimizing the information loss. The performance of the proposed techniques is compared against the most recent microaggregation methods. Experimental results using benchmark datasets show that the proposed algorithms perform significantly better than existing associate techniques in the literature.

2020 Distributed Individuals for Multiple Peaks: A Novel Differential Evolution for Multimodal Optimization Problems
abstract
Locating more peaks and refining the solution accuracy on the found peaks are two challenging issues in solving multimodal optimization problems (MMOPs). To deal with these two challenges, a distributed individuals differential evolution (DIDE) algorithm is proposed in this article based on a distributed individuals for multiple peaks (DIMP) framework and two novel mechanisms. First, the DIMP framework provides sufficient diversity by letting each individual act as a distributed unit to track a peak. Based on the DIMP framework, each individual uses a virtual population controlled by an adaptive range adjustment strategy to explore the search space sufficiently for locating a peak and then gradually approach it. Second, the two novel mechanisms named lifetime mechanism and elite learning mechanism (ELM) cooperate with the DIMP framework. The lifetime mechanism is inspired by the natural phenomenon that every organism will gradually age and has a limited lifespan. When an individual runs out of its lifetime and also has good fitness, it is regarded as an elite solution and will be added to an archive. Then the individual restarts a new lifetime, so as to bring further diversity to locate more peaks. The ELM is proposed to refine the accuracy of those elite solutions in the archive, being efficient in dealing with the solution accuracy issue on the found peaks. The experimental results on 20 multimodal benchmark test functions show that the proposed DIDE algorithm has generally better or competitive performance compared with the state-of-the-art multimodal optimization algorithms.

2020 A Niching Memetic Algorithm for Multi-Solution Traveling Salesman Problem
abstract
Multi-solution problems extensively exist in practice. Particularly, the traveling salesman problem (TSP) may possess multiple shortest tours, from which travelers can choose one according to their specific requirements. However, very few efforts have been devoted to the multi-solution problems in the discrete domain. In order to fill this research gap and to effectively tackle the multi-solution TSP, we propose a niching memetic algorithm in this article. The proposed algorithm is characterized by a niche preservation technique to enable the parallel search of multiple optimal solutions; an adaptive neighborhood strategy to balance the exploration and exploitation; a critical edge-aware method to provide effective guidance to the reproduction; and a selective local search strategy to improve the search efficiency. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we conduct comprehensive experiments on a recently published multi-solution optimization test suite. The experimental results show that our algorithm outperforms other compared algorithms. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is adopted to tackle problems from the well-known TSPLIB library to obtain a set of distinct but good solutions.

2020 Automatic Niching Differential Evolution With Contour Prediction Approach for Multimodal Optimization Problems
abstract
Niching techniques have been widely incorporated into evolutionary algorithms (EAs) for solving multimodal optimization problems (MMOPs). However, most of the existing niching techniques are either sensitive to the niching parameters or require extra fitness evaluations (FEs) to maintain the niche detection accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new automatic niching technique based on the affinity propagation clustering (APC) and design a novel niching differential evolution (DE) algorithm, termed as automatic niching DE (ANDE), for solving MMOPs. In the proposed ANDE algorithm, APC acts as a parameter-free automatic niching method that does not need to predefine the number of clusters or the cluster size. Also, it can facilitate locating multiple peaks without extra FEs. Furthermore, the ANDE algorithm is enhanced by a contour prediction approach (CPA) and a two-level local search (TLLS) strategy. First, the CPA is a predictive search strategy. It exploits the individual distribution information in each niche to estimate the contour landscape, and then predicts the rough position of the potential peak to help accelerate the convergence speed. Second, the TLLS is a solution refine strategy to further increase the solution accuracy after the CPA roughly predicting the peaks. Compared with the other state-of-the-art DE and non-DE multimodal algorithms, even the winner of competition on multimodal optimization, the experimental results on 20 widely used benchmark functions illustrate the superiority of the proposed ANDE algorithm.

2020 Parameter-Free Voronoi Neighborhood for Evolutionary Multimodal Optimization
abstract
Neighborhood information plays an important role in improving the performance of evolutionary computation in various optimization scenarios, particularly in the context of multimodal optimization. Several neighborhood concepts, i.e., index-based neighborhood, nearest neighborhood, and fuzzy neighborhood, have been studied and engaged in the design of niching methods. However, the use of these neighborhood concepts requires the specification of some problem-related parameters, which is difficult to determine without a prior knowledge. In this paper, we introduce a new neighborhood concept based on a geometrical construction called Voronoi diagram. The new concept offers two advantages at the expense of increasing the computational complexity to a higher level. It eliminates the need of additional parameters and it is more informative than the existing ones. The information provided by the Voronoi neighbors of an individual can be exploited to estimate the evolutionary state. Based on the information, we divide the population into three groups and assign each group a different reproduction strategy to support the exploration and exploitation of the search space. We show the use of the concept in the design of an effective evolutionary algorithm for multimodal optimization. The experiments have been conducted to investigate the performance of the algorithm. The results reveal that the proposed algorithm compare favorably with the state-of-the-art algorithms designed based on other types of neighborhood concepts.

2020 Coordinated Charging Scheduling of Electric Vehicles: A Mixed-Variable Differential Evolution Approach
abstract
The increasing popularity of battery-limited electric vehicles puts forward an important issue of how to charge the vehicles effectively. This problem, commonly referred to as Electric Vehicle Charging Scheduling (EVCS), has been proven to be NP-hard. Most of the existing works formulate the EVCS problem simply as a constrained shortest path finding problem and treat it by discrete optimization. However, other variables such as the charging amount of energy and the charging option at a station need to be considered in practical use. This paper hence formulates the EVCS problem as a hierarchical mixed-variable optimization problem, considering the dependency among the station selection, the charging option at each station and the charging amount settings. To adapt to the new problem model, we specifically design a Mixed-Variable Differentiate Evolution (MVDE) as the scheduling algorithm for our proposed EVCS system. The MVDE contains several specific operators, including a charging station route construction, a hierarchical mixed-variable mutation operator and a constraint-aware evaluation operator. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of our proposed MVDE-based system on both synthetic and real-world transportation networks.

2019 A benefit-driven genetic algorithm for balancing privacy and utility in database fragmentation
abstract
In outsourcing data storage, privacy and utility are significant concerns. Techniques such as data encryption can protect the privacy of sensitive information but affect the efficiency of data usage accordingly. By splitting attributes of sensitive associations, database fragmentation can protect data privacy. In the meantime, data utility can be improved through grouping data of high affinity. In this paper, a benefit-driven genetic algorithm is proposed to achieve a better balance between privacy and utility for database fragmentation. To integrate useful fragmentation information in different solutions, a matching strategy is designed. Two benefit-driven operators for mutation and improvement are proposed to construct valuable fragments and rearrange elements. 2019 A LSTM and CNN Based Assemble Neural Network Framework for Arrhythmias Classification
abstract
This paper puts forward a LSTM and CNN based assemble neural network framework to distinguish different types of arrhythmias by integrating stacked bidirectional long shot-term memory (SB-LSTM) network and two-dimensional convolutional neural network (TD-CNN). Particularly, SB-LSTM is used to mine the long-term dependencies contained in electrocardiogram (ECG) from two directions to model the overall variation trends of ECG, while TD-CNN aims at extracting local information of ECG to characterize the local features of ECG. Moreover, we design an ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) based signal decomposition layer and a support vector machine based intermediate result fusion layer, by which ECG can be analyzed more effectively, and the final classification results can be more accurate and robust. Experimental results on public INCART arrhythmia database show that our model surpasses three state-of-the-art methods, and obtains 99.1% of accuracy, 99.3% of sensitivity and 98.5% of specificity.

2019 Discriminative Regularized Deep Generative Models for Semi-Supervised Learning
abstract
Deep generative models (DGMs) have shown strong performance in semi-supervised learning (SSL), which incorporate discrete class information into the learning process. Yet existing methods generally overfit to the given labeled data, for only considering the conditional probability of labels. In this paper, we propose a novel discriminative regularized deep generative method for SSL, which fully exploits the discriminative and geometric information of data to address the aforementioned issue. Our method introduces the cluster and manifold assumption that maximizes the classification margin between clusters and simultaneously smooths the predictions of the data which is close in the sub-manifold of each cluster, to regularize the learning of the classifier in DGMs. To derive the regularization based on introduced assumptions, we adopt the generated data of DGMs along with labelled and unlabelled data, to model the data manifold and yield clusters based on the Gumbel-softmax distribution. Experimental results on both text and image datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and flexibility of our method, and prove that two introduced assumptions are complementary in guiding the classification boundary, thus improving the discriminative ability of the classifier.

2019 An Attention-based Hybrid LSTM-CNN Model for Arrhythmias Classification
abstract
Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal based arrhythmias classification is an important task in healthcare field. Based on domain knowledge and observation results from large scale data, we find that accurately classifying different types of arrhythmias relies on three key characteristics of ECG: overall variation trends, local variation features and their relative location. However, these key factors are not yet well studied by existing methods. To tackle this problem, we design an attention-based hybrid LSTM-CNN model which is comprised of a stacked bidirectional LSTM (SB-LSTM) and a two-dimensional CNN (TD-CNN). Specifically, SB-LSTM and TD-CNN are utilized to extract the overall variation trends and local features of ECG, respectively. Furthermore, we add a trend attention gate (TAG) to SB-LSTM, meanwhile, add a feature attention mechanism (FAM) and a location attention mechanism (LAM) to TD-CNN. Thus, the effects of important trends and features at key locations in ECG can be enhanced, which is conducive to obtaining a better understanding of the fluctuation pattern of ECG. Experimental results on the MIT-BIH arrhythmias dataset indicate that our model outperforms three state-of-the-art methods, and achieve 99.3% of accuracy, 99.6% of sensitivity and 98.1% of specificity, respectively.

2019 Dilated Convolutional Networks Incorporating Soft Entity Type Constraints for Distant Supervised Relation Extraction
abstract
Although distant supervised relation extraction has been widely used, its performance is weakened by the wrong labeling problem. During eliminating noise, many previous work failed to grasp the trade-off between long dependencies and computational complexity while using neural networks, and ignored the potential noise in external knowledge. In this paper, we propose a neural model incorporating dilated convolutional neural networks with soft entity type constraints to jointly tackle the above two issues. Rather than using traditional convolutional neural networks or recurrent neural networks, we propose dilated convolutional networks as the sentence encoder so as to capture long dependencies in large scale context and improve the robustness against local noise while keeping the efficiency of computation. Furthermore, we utilize entity types, which is considerd as external knowledge with noise, to denoise in relation classification by taking the constraints between entity types and relations into account and learning more precise entity types and attention weights simultaneously. Experimental results on the New York Times dataset show that, our model incorporating dilated convolutional networks with soft entity type constraints promotes distant supervised relation extraction and achieves state-of-art results compared with baselines.

2019 Discriminative Regularization with Conditional Generative Adversarial Nets for Semi-Supervised Learning
abstract
Existing generative adversarial networks (GANs) with manifold regularization for semi-supervised learning (SSL) have shown promising performance in image generation and semi-supervised learning (SSL), which penalize the smoothness of classifier over data manifold based on the smoothness assumption. However, the smoothness assumption is valid for data points in high density region while not hold for data points in low density region, thus they tend to misclassify boundary instances in low density region. In this paper, we propose a novel discriminative regularization method for semi-supervised learning with conditional generative adversarial nets (CGANs). In our method, the discriminative information from class conditional data distribution captured by CGANs is utilized to improve the discrimination of classifier. Different from regular manifold regularization, the discriminative regularization encourages the classifier invariance to local perturbations on the sub-manifold of each cluster, and distinct classification outputs for data points in different clusters. Moreover, our method can be easily implemented via the stochastic approximation without constructing the Laplacian graph or computing the Jacobian of classifier explicitly. Experimental results on benchmark datasets show that our method can achieve competitive performance against previous advanced methods.

2019 Bayesian Sparse Topical Coding
abstract
Sparse topic models (STMs) are widely used for learning a semantically rich latent sparse representation of short texts in large scale, mainly by imposing sparse priors or appropriate regularizers on topic models. However, it is difficult for these STMs to model the sparse structure and pattern of the corpora accurately, since their sparse priors always fail to achieve real sparseness, and their regularizers bypass the prior information of the relevance between sparse coefficients. In this paper, we propose a novel Bayesian hierarchical topic models called Bayesian Sparse Topical Coding with Poisson Distribution (BSTC-P) on the basis of Sparse Topical Coding with Sparse Groups (STCSG). Different from traditional STMs, it focuses on imposing hierarchical sparse prior to leverage the prior information of relevance between sparse coefficients. Furthermore, we propose a sparsity-enhanced BSTC, Bayesian Sparse Topical Coding with Normal Distribution (BSTC-N), via mathematic approximation. We adopt superior hierarchical sparse inducing prior, with the purpose of achieving the sparsest optimal solution. Experimental results on datasets of Newsgroups and Twitter show that both BSTC-P and BSTC-N have better performance on finding clear latent semantic representations. Therefore, they yield better performance than existing works on document classification tasks.

2018 Emerging Topic Detection from Microblog Streams Based on Emerging Pattern Mining
abstract
Emerging topic detection from microblogs has developed into an attractive task because events usually break on social channels. However, due to the features of high noise, short length, fast arriving rate and irregular writing style of microblogs, it has been proven to be a challenge to detect emerging topics from microblog streams early and accurately in a scalable way. Several approaches have been proposed to tackle this problem and have achieved sound performance in some aspects. However, from the point of novelty and scalability, there is still considerable space for improvement. Inspired by the consideration, we propose an emerging topic detection framework based on emerging pattern mining. Via encoding the term novelty into an efficient high utility itemset mining (HUIM) algorithm, a group of emerging patterns which are concise and interpretive representations of topics can be first detected, decreasing the computational cost of the clustering part.

2018 Block Bayesian Sparse Topical Coding
abstract
Learning low dimensional representations from a large number of short corpora has a profound practical significance but with vital challenge in content analysis and data mining applications. In this paper, we propose a novel topic model called Block Bayesian Sparse Topic Coding (Block-BSTC), which is capable of discovering the latent semantic representation of short texts. The Block-BSTC relaxes the normalization constraint of the inferred representations with word embeddings and block sparse Bayesian learning, which is convenient to directly control the sparsity of word codes with exploiting the intra-block correlations. Furthermore, the experimental results show that Block-BSTC achieves great performance on the sparsity ratio of word codes. Meanwhile, it can improve the accuracy of document classification.

2018 Understanding Housing Market Behaviour from a Microscopic Perspective
abstract
This paper discusses the usage of micro-level behavioural data for understanding macro-level housing market behavior. We use sentiment analysis to examine local newspaper articles discussing real estate at a suburb level in inner-west Sydney, Australia. We calculate the media sentiment index by using two different methods, and compare them with each other and the housing price index. The use of media sentiment index can serve as a finer-grained guiding tool to facilitate decision making for home buyers, investors, researchers and policy makers.

2018 MtMR: Ensuring MapReduce Computation Integrity with Merkle Tree-Based Verifications
abstract
Big data applications have made significant impacts in recent years thanks to the fast growth of cloud computing and big data infrastructures. However, public cloud is still not widely accepted to perform big data computing, due to the concern with the public cloud's security. Result integrity is one of the most significant security problems that exists in the cloud-based big data computing scenario. In this paper, we propose MtMR, a Merkle tree-based verification method that assures high result integrity of MapReduce jobs. MtMR overlays MapReduce on a hybrid cloud environment and applies two rounds of Merkle tree-based verifications on the prereduce phase (i.e., the map phase and the shuffle phase) and the reduce phase, respectively. In each round, MtMR samples a small portion of reduce task input/output records on the private cloud and performs Merkle tree-based verification on all the task input/output records. Based on the design of MtMR, we perform a series of theoretical studies to analyze its security and performance overhead. Our results indicate that MtMR is a promising method in terms of high result integrity and low performance overhead. For example, by setting the sampled record ratio as an optimal value, MtMR can guarantee no more than 10 incorrect records in each reduce task by sampling only 4 percent of records in that task.

2018 Mining Event-Oriented Topics in Microblog Stream with Unsupervised Multi-View Hierarchical Embedding
abstract
This article presents an unsupervised multi-view hierarchical embedding (UMHE) framework to sufficiently reveal the intrinsic topical knowledge in social events. Event-oriented topics are highly related to such events as it can provide explicit descriptions of what have happened in social community. In many real-world cases, however, it is difficult to include all attributes of microblogs, more often, textual aspects only are available. Traditional topic modelling methods have failed to generate event-oriented topics with the textual aspects, since the inherent relations between topics are often overlooked in these methods. Meanwhile, the metrics in original word vocabulary space might not effectively capture semantic distances. Our UMHE framework overcomes the severe information deficiency and poor feature representation. The UMHE first develops a multi-view Bayesian rose tree to preliminarily generate prior knowledge for latent topics and their relations. With such prior knowledge, we design an unsupervised translation-based hierarchical embedding method to make a better representation of these latent topics. By applying self-adaptive spectral clustering on the embedding space and the original space concomitantly, we eventually extract event-oriented topics in word distributions to express social events. Our framework is purely data-driven and unsupervised, without any external knowledge. Experimental results on TREC Tweets2011 dataset and Sina Weibo dataset demonstrate that the UMHE framework can construct hierarchical structure with high fitness, but also yield topic embeddings with salient semantics; therefore, it can derive event-oriented topics with meaningful descriptions.

2018 Cloud Service Description Model: An Extension of USDL for Cloud Services
abstract
There are a variety of well-designed specification-modelling-languages serving Internet services, however, none of them is capable of describing the special features of cloud services, from both technical and business points of view. The Unified Service Description Language (USDL) provides a new way to describe Internet services from business, operational, and technical perspectives. Nevertheless, there are various issues with USDL: it lacks a comprehensive specification model, particularly for cloud services, lacks a user-centric specification modeling paradigm, lacks a mechanism to measure cloud service attributes and to present the association relationship and re-usability of the attributes, and lacks semantic representation of cloud services. Based on the above issues, we propose a unified semantic Cloud Service Description Model (CSDM) in this paper. The proposed model will be extended from the basic structure of USDL, by defining cloud-service-specific attributes. Furthermore, an additional module, named transaction module, will be defined, which models the rating system of cloud services from several aspects, such as risk, trust, and reputation. The transaction module facilitates the capability of CSDM with regard to service ranking, and enhances its flexibility and extensibility by providing an extensible sub-module. In addition, we design an OWL-based annotation system to enrich the semantic expressivity of this model. Finally, a case study is provided to explain the application of this model in actual cloud services.

2018 On Secure Wireless Communications for Service Oriented Computing
abstract
Service Oriented Computing (SOC) has initially developed for the Internet, but also identified as an appealing computing paradigm for developing applications in distributed wireless environments. The open nature of wireless medium may expose services to a variety of unauthorized third parties (eavesdroppers), resulting in insecure service interactions, while cooperative jamming is promising to provide a strong form of security. This paper focuses on security performance study of wireless communications for service interactions among different parties in SOC. More specifically, this paper establishes a theoretical framework for the study of eavesdropper-tolerance capability (i.e., the maximum number of eavesdroppers that can be tolerated) in a two-hop wireless network, where the cooperative jamming is adopted to ensure security defined by secrecy outage probability (SOP) and opportunistic relaying is adopted to guarantee reliability defined by transmission outage probability (TOP). For the concerned network, exact modeling for SOP and fine approximation for TOP are first conducted based on the Central Limit Theorem. With the help of SOP and TOP models and also the Stochastic Ordering Theory, the model for eavesdropper-tolerance capability analysis is then developed. Finally, extensive simulation and numerical results are provided to illustrate the efficiency of our theoretical framework as well as the eavesdropper-tolerance capability of the concerned network from adopting cooperative jamming and opportunistic relaying.

2017 A Topic Model Based on Poisson Decomposition
abstract
Determining appropriate statistical distributions for modeling text corpora is important for accurate estimation of numerical characteristics. Based on the validity of the test on a claim that the data conforms to Poisson distribution we propose Poisson decomposition model (PDM), a statistical model for modeling count data of text corpora, which can straightly capture each document's multidimensional numerical characteristics on topics. In PDM, each topic is represented as a parameter vector with multidimensional Poisson distribution, which can be easily normalized to multinomial term probabilities and each document is represented as measurements on topics and thereby reduced to a measurement vector on topics. We use gradient descent methods and sampling algorithm for parameter estimation. We carry out extensive experiments on the topics produced by our models. The results demonstrate our approach can extract more coherent topics and is competitive in document clustering by using the PDM-based features, compared to PLSI and LDA.

2017 Parallelization of Massive Textstream Compression Based on Compressed Sensing
abstract
Compressing textstreams generated by social networks can both reduce storage consumption and improve efficiency such as fast searching. However, the compression process is a challenge due to the large scale of textstreams. In this article, we propose a textstream compression framework based on compressed sensing theory and design a series of matching parallel procedures. The new approach uses a linear projection technique in the textstream compression process, achieving fast compression speed and low compression ratio. Two processes are executed by designing elaborated parallel procedures for efficient compressing and decompressing of large-scale textstreams. The decompression process is implemented for approximate solutions of underdetermined linear systems. Experimental results show that the new method can efficiently achieve the compression and decompression tasks on a large amount of text generated by social networks.

2016 Access control management with provenance in healthcare environments
abstract
Provenance, describes how a data item came to be its current state. A Directed Acyclic Graph, nature of the provenance poses challenges to access control models and querying languages. Access control policies are needed to protect the security of data provenance. In this paper, we apply proposed notions of regular expression for provenance as the structure of a provenance graph is very large. We use an extending access control language for data provenance, and semantic Web technologies to effectively query provenances. Finally, we tailored an access control language by using the regular expressions through a medical example.

2016 Protecting outsourced data in cloud computing through access management
abstract
Summary Data outsourcing is a major component for cloud computing because data owners are able to distribute resources to external services for sharing with users and organizations. A crucial problem for owners is how to secure sensitive information accessed by legitimate users only using the trusted services. We address the problem with access control methods to enforce selective access to outsourced data without involving the owner in authorization. The basic idea is to combine cryptography with authorizations, and data owners assign keys to roles that will enforce access via encryption. A formal access model is designed to analyze the translating an authorization policy into an equivalent encryption policy. The paper also investigates the effect of role hierarchy structure in the authorization process. The role‐based access management methods are implemented withXACMLby usingWSOIdentity Server. The comparisons with other related work are presented. Finally, the future work is introduced.Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

2016 On Secure Wireless Communications for IoT Under Eavesdropper Collusion
abstract
Wireless communication is one of the key technologies that actualize the Internet of Things (IoT) concept into the real world. Understanding the security performance of wireless communications lays the foundation for the security management of IoT. Eavesdropper collusion represents a significant threat to wireless communication security, while physical-layer security serves as a promising approach to providing a strong form of security guarantee. This paper studies the important secrecy outage performance of wireless communications under eavesdropper collusion, where the physical layer security is adopted to counteract such attack. Based on the classical Probability Theory, we first conduct analysis on the secrecy outage of the simple noncolluding case in which eavesdroppers do not collude and operate independently. For the secrecy outage analysis of the more hazardous M-colluding scenario, where any M eavesdroppers can combine their observations to decode the message, the techniques of Laplace transform, keyhole contour integral, and Cauchy Integral Theorem are jointly adopted to work around the highly cumbersome multifold convolution problem involved in such analysis, such that the related signal-to-interference ratio modeling for all colluding eavesdroppers can be conducted and thus the corresponding secrecy outage probability can be analytically determined. Finally, simulation and numerical results are provided to illustrate our theoretical achievements. An interesting observation suggests that the SOP increases first superlinearly and then sublinearly with M.

2016 Supervised Anomaly Detection in Uncertain Pseudoperiodic Data Streams
abstract
Uncertain data streams have been widely generated in many Web applications. The uncertainty in data streams makes anomaly detection from sensor data streams far more challenging. In this article, we present a novel framework that supports anomaly detection in uncertain data streams. The proposed framework adopts the wavelet soft-thresholding method to remove the noises or errors in data streams. Based on the refined data streams, we develop effective period pattern recognition and feature extraction techniques to improve the computational efficiency. We use classification methods for anomaly detection in the corrected data stream. We also empirically show that the proposed approach shows a high accuracy of anomaly detection on several real datasets.

2015 Collaborative Topic Ranking: Leveraging Item Meta-Data for Sparsity Reduction
abstract
Pair-wise ranking methods have been widely used in recommender systems to deal with implicit feedback. They attempt to discriminate between a handful of observed items and the large set of unobserved items. In these approaches, however, user preferences and item characteristics cannot be estimated reliably due to overfitting given highly sparse data. To alleviate this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical Bayesian framework which incorporates ``bag-of-words'' type meta-data on items into pair-wise ranking models for one-class collaborative filtering. The main idea of our method lies in extending the pair-wise ranking with a probabilistic topic modeling. Instead of regularizing item factors through a zero-mean Gaussian prior, our method introduces item-specific topic proportions as priors for item factors. As a by-product, interpretable latent factors for users and items may help explain recommendations in some applications. We conduct an experimental study on a real and publicly available dataset, and the results show that our algorithm is effective in providing accurate recommendation and interpreting user factors and item factors.

2015 Central Topic Model for Event-oriented Topics Mining in Microblog Stream
abstract
To date, data generates and arrives in the form of stream to propagate discussions of public events in microblog services. Discovering event-oriented topics from the stream will lead to a better understanding of the change of public concern. However, as the massive scale of the data stream, traditional static topic models, such as LDA, are no longer fit for topic detection and tracking tasks. In this paper, we propose a central topic model (CenTM), where a Multi-view Clustering algorithm with Two-phase Random Walk (MC-TRW) is devised to aggregate the LDA's latent topics into central topics. Furthermore, we leverage the aggregation of central topics alternately with MC-TRW and sequential topic inference to improve the scalability in the stream fashion, so as to derive the dynamic central topic model (DCenTM). Specifically, our model is able to uncover the intrinsic characteristics of the central topics and predict the trend of their intensity along a life cycle. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed central topic model is event-oriented and of high generalization, it therefore can dispose the topic trend prediction effectively and precisely in massive data stream.

2015 Causal dependencies of provenance data in healthcare environment
abstract
Open Provenance Model (OPM) is a provenance model that can capture provenance data in terms of causal dependencies among the provenance data model components. Causal dependencies are relationships between an event (the cause) and a second event (the effect), where the second event is understood as a physical consequence of the first. Causal dependencies can represent a set of entities that are necessary and sufficient to explain the presence of another entity. A provenance model is able to describe the provenance of any data at an abstract layer, but does not explicitly capture causal dependencies that are a vital challenge since the lacks of the relations in OPM, especially in healthcare environment. In this paper, we analyse the causal dependencies between entities in a medical workflow system with OPM graphs.

This paper tackles the key scheduling problem of reducing the overall wait time of mobile clients in wireless data broadcast systems. It is observed that in periodic broadcast, new mobile clients may join in and existing mobile clients may leave anytime; in on-demand broadcast, high uplink communication cost may occur as all clients have to submit their queries every time. These are likely to degrade existing broadcasting approaches. In this work, we study the scheduling problem of XML data broadcast in a hybrid mode, where the system supports both periodic broadcast and on-demand broadcast services at the same. By taking the structural similarity between XML documents into account, only a small portion of mobile clients would be involved in the scheduling process and all mobile clients can be served more effectively. In this way, communication cost at the client side can be reduced greatly. A formal theoretical analysis of the proposed technique is presented. Based on the analysis, a novel clustering-based scheduling algorithm is developed. Moreover, we utilize an aging method to predict the distribution of incoming queries based on small samples of queries from mobile clients. Finally, we evaluate the approach through a set of experiments and the results show that it can significantly improve access efficiency for mobile clients.

2014 Indexing Linked Data in a Wireless Broadcast System with 3D Hilbert Space-Filling Curves
abstract
Semantic technologies aim to facilitate machine-to-machine communication and are attracting more and more interest from both academia and industry, especially in the emerging Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, we consider large-scale information sharing scenarios among mobile objects in IoT by leveraging semantic techniques. We propose to broadcast Linked Data on-air using RDF format to allow simultaneous access to the information and to achieve better scalability. We introduce a novel air indexing method to reduce the information access latency and energy consumption. To build air indexes, we firstly map RDF triples in the Linked Data into points in a 3D space and build B+-trees based on 3D Hilbert curve mappings for all of the 3D points. We then convert these trees into linear sequences so that they can be broadcast over a wireless channel. A novel search algorithm is also designed to efficiently evaluate queries against the air indexes. Experiments show that our indexing method outperforms the air indexing method based on traditional 3D R-trees.

2014 Positive Influence Dominating Set Games
abstract
Motivated by applications in social networks, a new type of dominating set named Positive Influence Dominating Set (PIDS) has been studied in the literature. In this paper, we investigate cooperative cost games arising from PIDS problem on social network graphs. We propose two new game models, Rigid PIDS Game and Relaxed PIDS Game, and focus on their cores. First, a relationship between the cores of both games is obtained. Next, we also prove that the core of the relaxed PIDS game is nonempty if and only if there is no integrality gap for the relaxation linear programming of the PIDS problem on graph G.

2013 A self-stabilizing protocol for minimal weighted dominating sets in arbitrary networks
abstract
A lot of self-stabilizing algorithms for computing dominating sets problem have been proposed in the literature due to many real-life applications. Most of the proposed algorithms either work for dominating sets with a uniform weight or find approximation solutions to weighted dominating sets. However, for non-uniform weighted dominating sets (WDS) problem, there is no self-stabilizing algorithm for the WDS. Furthermore, how to find the minimal weighted dominating set is a challenge. In this paper, we propose a self-stabilizing algorithm for the minimal weighted dominating set (MWDS) under a central daemon model when operating in any general network. We further prove that the worst case convergence time of the algorithm from any arbitrary initial state is O(n2) steps where n is the number of nodes in the network.

2013 SODIT: An innovative system for outlier detection using multiple localized thresholding and interactive feedback
abstract
Outlier detection is an important long-standing research problem in data mining and has enjoyed applications in a wide range of applications in business, engineering, biology and security, etc. However, the traditional outlier detection methods inevitably need to use different parameters for detection such as those used to specify the distance or density cutoff for distinguish outliers from normal data points. Using the trial and error approach, the traditional outlier detection methods are rather tedious in parameter tuning. In this demo proposal, we introduce an innovative outlier detection system, called SODIT, that uses localized thresholding to assist the value specification of the thresholds that reflect closely the local data distribution. In addition, easy-to-use user feedback are employed to further facilitate the determination of optimal parameter values. SODIT is able to make outlier detection much easier to operate and produce more accurate, intuitive and informative results than before.

2012 Semantic access control for cloud computing based on e-Healthcare
abstract
With the increased development of cloud computing, access control policies have become an important issue in the security filed of cloud computing. Semantic web is the extension of current Web which aims at automation, integration and reuse of data among different web applications such as clouding computing. However, Semantic web applications pose some new requirements for security mechanisms especially in the access control models. In this paper, we analyse existing access control methods and present a semantic based access control model which considers semantic relations among different entities in cloud computing environment. We have enriched the research for semantic web technology with role-based access control that is able to be applied in the field of medical information system or e-Healthcare system. This work demonstrates how the semantic web technology provides efficient solutions for the management of complex and distributed data in heterogeneous systems, and it can be used in the medical information systems as well.

2012 Minimal persistence control on dynamic directed graphs for multi-robot formation
abstract
Given a multi-robot system, in order to preserve its geometric shape in a formation, the minimal persistence control addresses questions: (1) what pairwise communication connections have to be prescribed to minimize communication channels, and (2) which orientations of communication links are to be placed between robots. In this paper, we propose a minimal persistence control problem on multi-robot systems with underlying graphs being directed and dynamically switching. We develop distributed algorithms based on the rank of the rigidity matrix and the pebble game method. The feasibility of the proposed methods is validated by simulations on the robotic simulator Webots and experiments on e-puck robot platform.

2012 Satisfying Privacy Requirements Before Data Anonymization
abstract
In this paper, we study a problem of protecting privacy of individuals in large public survey rating data. We propose a novel (k,ϵ, l)-anonymity model to protect privacy in large survey rating data, in which each survey record is required to be similar to at least k−1 other records based on the non-sensitive ratings, where the similarity is controlled by ϵ, and the standard deviation of sensitive ratings is at least l. We study an interesting yet non-trivial satisfaction problem of the proposed model, which is to decide whether a survey rating data set satisfies the privacy requirements given by the user. For this problem, we investigate its inherent properties theoretically, and devise a novel slicing technique to solve it. We analyze the computation complexity of the proposed slicing technique and conduct extensive experiments on two real-life data sets, and the results show that the slicing technique is fast and scalable with data size and much more efficient in terms of execution time and space overhead than the heuristic pairwise method.

2012 A purpose-based access control in native XML databases
abstract
SUMMARY With the growing importance of privacy in data access, much research has been done on the privacy protecting technology in the recent years. Developing an access control model and related mechanisms to support a selective access data has become important. The extensible markup language (XML) is rapidly emerging as the new standard language for semi‐structured data representation and exchange on the Internet with more and more information being distributed in XML format. In this paper, we present a comprehensive approach for privacy preserving access control based on the notion of purpose. In our model, purpose information associated with a given data element in an XML document specifies the intended use of the data elements. An important issue addressed in this paper is the granularity of data labeling for data elements in XML documents and tree databases with which purposes can be associated. We address this issue in native XML databases and propose different labeling schemes for XML documents. We also propose an approach to represent purpose information to support access control based on purpose information. Our proposed solution relies on usage access control models as well as the components that are based on the notions of the purpose information used in subjects and objects. 2012 On the identity anonymization of high-dimensional rating data
abstract
SUMMARY We study the challenges of protecting the privacy of individuals in a large public survey rating data. The survey rating data usually contains both ratings of sensitive and non‐sensitive issues. The ratings of sensitive issues involve personal privacy. Although the survey participants do not reveal any of their ratings, their survey records are potentially identifiable by using information from other public sources. None of the existing anonymization principles (e.g.k‐anonymity,l‐diversity, etc.) can effectively prevent such breaches in large survey rating data sets. In this paper, we tackle the problem by defining a principle called (k, epsilon, l)‐anonymity. The principle requires that, for each transactiontin the given survey rating dataT, at least (k− 1) other transactions inTmust have ratings similar tot, where the similarity is controlled by ε and the standard deviation of sensitive ratings is at leastl. We propose a greedy approach to anonymize the survey rating data that scales almost linearly with the input size, and we apply the method to two real‐life data sets to demonstrate their efficiency and practical utility. 2011 Cloning for privacy protection in multiple independent data publications
abstract
Data anonymization has become a major technique in privacy preserving data publishing. Many methods have been proposed to anonymize one dataset and a series of datasets of a data owner. However, no method has been proposed for the anonymization of data of multiple independent data publications. A data owner publishes a dataset, which contains overlapping population with other datasets published by other independent data owners. In this paper we analyze the privacy risk in the such scenario and vulnerability of partitioned based anonymization methods. We show that no partitioned based anonymization methods can protect privacy in arbitrary data distributions, and identify a case that the privacy can be protected in the scenario. We propose a new generalization principle ε-cloning to protect privacy for multiple independent data publications. We also develop an effective algorithm to achieve the ε-cloning. We experimentally show that the proposed algorithm anonymizes data to satisfy the privacy requirement and preserves good data utility.

2011 Privacy Preserving Access Control Policy and Algorithms for Conflicting Problems
abstract
This paper proposes a framework for privacy preserving access control policies and mechanisms, and describes algorithms for access policy conflicting problems. The mechanism enforces access policy to data containing personally identifiable information. The key component of the framework is purpose involved access control models (PAC) that provide full support for expressing highly complex privacy-related policies, taking into account features like purposes, conditions and obligations. Policy conflicting problems may arise when new access policies are generated that are possible to be conflicted to existing policies. As a result of the policy conflicts, private information cannot be well protected. The structure of access control policy including conditions and obligations is studied. Based on the access policy, authorization models and policy operations are analysed. Finally comparisons to related works EPAL are presented.

2011 Access control and authorization for protecting disseminative information in E-learning workflow
abstract
Abstract E‐learning defined as learning activities performed over electronic devices is rapidly increasing and has become one of the key e‐commerce applications with a growing commercial market in the near future. Access control and authorization in E‐learning workflow is a vital problem with low costs and no location limits for students. E‐learning organizers prefer to disseminate their message as widely as possible, while at the same time authorized people only are able to access disseminative information. However, in the E‐learning workflow it is a challenge to protect from access, such as reading and updating, the digital message that has been disseminated out from the organizations. This paper aims to substantially provide a foundation for developing appropriate security solutions for organizations' secure dissemination of digital information. An application‐level secure architecture is developed based on the references on both server side and client side. The architecture provides control and tracking capabilities for dissemination and usage of digital information while others provide only tracking capability. The outcomes of this paper can immediately apply to prevent unauthorized dissemination of digital content amongst agents of universities regardless of their intention or possession of the digital information and will contribute to higher security in E‐learning. 2010 A Pairwise-Systematic Microaggregation for Statistical Disclosure Control
abstract
Microdata protection in statistical databases has recently become a major societal concern and has been intensively studied in recent years. Statistical Disclosure Control (SDC) is often applied to statistical databases before they are released for public use. Micro aggregation for SDC is a family of methods to protect micro data from individual identification. SDC seeks to protect micro data in such a way that can be published and mined without providing any private information that can be linked to specific individuals. Micro aggregation works by partitioning the micro data into groups of at least k records and then replacing the records in each group with the centroid of the group. An optimal micro aggregation method must minimize the information loss resulting from this replacement process. The challenge is how to minimize the information loss during the micro aggregation process. This paper presents a pair wise systematic (P-S) micro aggregation method to minimize the information loss. The proposed technique simultaneously forms two distant groups at a time with the corresponding similar records together in a systematic way and then anonymized with the centroid of each group individually. The structure of P-S problem is defined and investigated and an algorithm of the proposed problem is developed. The performance of the P-S algorithm is compared against the most recent micro aggregation methods. Experimental results show that P-S algorithm incurs less than half information loss than the latest micro aggregation methods for all of the test situations.

2010 Specifying Usage Control Model with Object Constraint Language
abstract
The recent usage control model (UCON) is a foundation for next-generation access control models with distinguishing properties of decision continuity and attribute mutability. Constraints in UCON are one of the most important components that have involved in the principle motivations of usage analysis and design. The importance of constraints associated with authorizations, obligations, and conditions in UCON has been recognized but modeling these constraints has not been received much attention. In this paper we use a de facto constraints specification language in software engineering to analyze the constraints in UCON model. We show how to represent constraints with object constraint language (OCL) and give out a formalized specification of UCON model which is built from basic constraints, such as authorization predicates, obligation actions and condition requirements. Further, we show the flexibility and expressive capability of this specified UCON model with extensive examples.

We study two building-block models of interference-limited wireless networks, motivated by the problem of joint Peer-to-Peer and Wide Area Network design. In the first case, a single “long-range” transmitter interferes with multiple parallel “short-range” transmissions, and, in the second case, multiple short-range transmitters interfere with a single long-range receiver. We identify the maximal degree-of-freedom region of the former network and show that multilevel superposition coding by the long-range transmitter performs optimally. Moreover, a simple power control strategy, performed by the long-range transmitter, achieves a region that is within one bit of the capacity region, under certain channel conditions. For the latter network, we show that short-range transmitter power control is degree-of-freedom optimal under certain channel conditions.

2009 Injecting purpose and trust into data anonymisation
abstract
Most existing works of data anonymisation target at the optimization of the anonymisation metrics to balance the data utility and privacy, whereas they ignore the effects of a requester's trust level and application purposes during the data anonymisation. Our aim of this paper is to propose a much finer level anonymisation scheme with regard to the data requester's trust value and specific application purpose. We prioritize the attributes for anonymisation based on how important and critical they are related to the specified application purposes and propose a trust evaluation strategy to quantify the data requester's reliability, and further build the projection between the trust value and the degree of data anonymiztion, which intends to determine to what extent the data should be anonymized. The decomposition algorithm is developed to find the desired anonymous solution, which guarantees the uniqueness and correctness.

2009 Uplink Capacity of Multi-Class IEEE 802.16j Relay Networks with Adaptive Modulation and Coding
abstract
The emerging IEEE 802.16j mobile multi-hop relay (MMR) network is currently being developed to increase the user throughput and extend the service coverage as an enhancement of existing 802.16e standard. In 802.16j, the intermediate relay stations (RSs) help the base station (BS) communicate with those mobile stations (MSs) that are either too far away from the BS or placed in an area where direct communication with BS experiences unsatisfactory level of service. In this paper, we investigate the uplink Erlang capacity of a two-hop 802.16j relay system supporting both voice and data traffics with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme applied in the physical layer. We first develop analytical models to calculate the blocking probability in the access zone and the outage probability in the relay zone, respectively. Then a joint algorithm is proposed to determine the bandwidth distribution between the access zone and the relay zone, and to derive the Erlang capacity region of the system. The numerical examples show that some capacity gains can be obtained with a relay-enhanced 802.16j system compared to the conventional single-hop 802.16e system.

To achieve the synchronization, we propose a decentralized algorithm by designing impact law, which does not depend on the position of the robot, but on the time information. Specifically, ¿the time interval between two consecutive impacts¿ is exchanged when the robots meet. We also show how to apply the synchronization algorithm to a planar patrolling problem. 2009 Extended K-Anonymity Models Against Attribute Disclosure
abstract
P-sensitive k-anonymity model has been recently defined as a sophistication of k-anonymity. This new property requires that there be at least p distinct values for each sensitive attribute within the records sharing a combination of key attributes. However, as shown in this paper, it may not protect sensitive information in some way. In this paper, we empirically investigate two enhanced k-anonymity models. Instead of publishing original specific sensitive attributes, the new models publish the categories that the sensitive values belong to. We propose a top-down approach to implement two enhanced models and show in the comprehensive experimental evaluations that the two new introduced models are practical in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.

2009 Effective Collaboration with Information Sharing in Virtual Universities
abstract
A global education system, as a key area in future IT, has fostered developers to provide various learning systems with low cost. While a variety of e-learning advantages has been recognized for a long time and many advances in e-learning systems have been implemented, the needs for effective information sharing in a secure manner have to date been largely ignored, especially for virtual university collaborative environments. Information sharing of virtual universities usually occurs in broad, highly dynamic network-based environments, and formally accessing the resources in a secure manner poses a difficult and vital challenge. This paper aims to build a new rule-based framework to identify and address issues of sharing in virtual university environments through role-based access control (RBAC) management. The framework includes a role-based group delegation granting model, group delegation revocation model, authorization granting, and authorization revocation. We analyze various revocations and the impact of revocations on role hierarchies. The implementation with XML-based tools demonstrates the feasibility of the framework and authorization methods. Finally, the current proposal is compared with other related work.

Role-based access control (RBAC) has been proven to be a flexible and useful access control model for information sharing in distributed collaborative environments. Permission-role assignments (PRA) is one important process in the access model. However, problems may arise during the procedures of PRA Conflicting permissions may assign to one role, and as a result, the role with the permissions can derive unexpected access capabilities. This paper aims to analyze the problems during the procedures of permission-role assignments in distributed collaborative environments and to develop authorization allocation algorithms to address the problems within permission-role assignments. The algorithms are extended to the case of PRA with the mobility of permission-role relationship. 2008 Erlang Capacity of Multi-Class TDMA Systems with Adaptive Modulation and Coding
abstract
Erlang capacity is traditionally defined as the maximum value of offered traffic among different service classes that the system can support when the blocking probabilities at the call admission control (CAC) level do not exceed certain thresholds. That is valid when a fixed amount of bandwidth is allocated to each user in each frame during the whole service time. However, with the introduction of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme employed at the physical layer, outage might occur due to the fact that the allocation of bandwidth is dynamic based on the time-varying wireless channel conditions. In this paper, we evaluate the Erlang capacity of a TDMA system with AMC supporting voice and data traffics, by taking both the blocking and the outage probabilities into account. The analytical models for calculating the blocking and the outage probabilities are developed separately, and a joint algorithm for determining the Erlang capacity of the system is proposed with some numerical examples.

2008 Hierarchical Downlink Resource Management Framework for OFDMA Based WiMAX Systems
abstract
IEEE 802.16, known as WiMAX, has received much attention for its capability to support multiple types of applications with diverse QoS requirements. Beyond what the standard has defined, radio resource management (RRM) still remains an open issue. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical downlink resource management framework for OFDMA based WiMAX systems. Our framework consists of a dynamic resource allocation (DRA) module and a connection admission control (CAC) module. DRA emphasizes on how to share the limited radio resources in term of subchannels and time slots among WiMAX subscribers belonging to different service classes with the objective of increasing the spectral efficiency while satisfying the diverse QoS requirements in each service class. CAC highlights how to limit the number of ongoing connections preventing the system capacity from being overused. Through system-level simulation, it is shown that the proposed framework can work adaptively and efficiently to improve the system performance in terms of high spectral efficiency and low outage probability.

2008 Gaussian Interference Channel Capacity to Within One Bit
abstract
The capacity of the two-user Gaussian interference channel has been open for 30 years. The understanding on this problem has been limited. The best known achievable region is due to Han and Kobayashi but its characterization is very complicated. It is also not known how tight the existing outer bounds are. In this work, we show that the existing outer bounds can in fact be arbitrarily loose in some parameter ranges, and by deriving new outer bounds, we show that a very simple and explicit Han-Kobayashi type scheme can achieve to within a single bit per second per hertz (bit/s/Hz) of the capacity for all values of the channel parameters. We also show that the scheme is asymptotically optimal at certain high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes. Using our results, we provide a natural generalization of the point-to-point classical notion of degrees of freedom to interference-limited scenarios.

2007 Adaptive Radio Resource Allocation in Hierarchical QoS Scheduling for IEEE 802.16 Systems
abstract
Future mobile communication systems such as IEEE 802.16 are expected to deliver a variety of multimedia services with diverse QoS requirements. To guarantee the QoS provision, appropriate scheduler architecture and scheduling algorithms have to be carefully designed. In this paper, we propose an adaptive bandwidth distribution algorithm for the aggregate scheduler in a two-level hierarchical scheduler, which can provide more organized service differentiation among different service classes. By taking the backlogged traffic, the spectral efficiency in terms of modulation efficiency, and the QoS satisfaction into account, the proposed algorithm adaptively allocates bandwidth to each service class with the objective of increasing the spectral efficiency while satisfying the QoS requirements. Through system-level simulation, it is shown that the proposed algorithm can adapt to the performance of the class schedulers and distribute the bandwidth among them more efficiently than the conventional schemes.

2007 Gaussian Interference Channel Capacity to Within One Bit: the General Case
abstract
The characterization of the capacity region of the two-user Gaussian interference channel has been an open problem for thirty years. The understanding on this problem has been limited. The best known achievable region is due to Han-Kobayashi but its characterization is very complicated. It is also not known how tight the existing outer bounds are. In this work, we extend our results of [1] to general (i.e. possibly asymmetric) channels for the complete capacity region. We show that the existing outer bounds can in fact be arbitrarily loose in some parameter ranges, and by deriving new outer bounds, we show that a simplified Han-Kobayashi type scheme can achieve to within a single bit the capacity for all values of the channel parameters. Using our results, we provide a natural generalization of the point-to-point classical notion of degrees of freedom to interference-limited scenarios.

2007 Vector Gaussian Multiple Description With Individual and Central Receivers
abstract
T multiple descriptions of a vector Gaussian source for individual and central receivers are investigated. The sum rate of the descriptions with covariance distortion measure constraints, in a positive semidefinite ordering, is exactly characterized. For two descriptions, the entire rate region is characterized. The key component of the solution is a novel information-theoretic inequality that is used to lower-bound the achievable multiple description rates. Jointly Gaussian descriptions are optimal in achieving the limiting rates. We also show the robustness of this description scheme: the distortions achieved are no larger when used to describe any non-Gaussian source with the same covariance matrix.

2005 A Flexible Payment Scheme and Its Role-Based Access Control
abstract
This work proposes a practical payment protocol with scalable anonymity for Internet purchases, and analyzes its role-based access control (RBAC). The protocol uses electronic cash for payment transactions. It is an offline payment scheme that can prevent a consumer from spending a coin more than once. Consumers can improve anonymity if they are worried about disclosure of their identities to banks. An agent provides high anonymity through the issue of a certification. The agent certifies reencrypted data after verifying the validity of the content from consumers, but with no private information of the consumers required. With this new method, each consumer can get the required anonymity level, depending on the available time, computation, and cost. We use RBAC to manage the new payment scheme and improve its integrity. With RBAC, each user may be assigned one or more roles, and each role can be assigned one or more privileges that are permitted to users in that role. To reduce conflicts of different roles and decrease complexities of administration, duty separation constraints, role hierarchies, and scenarios of end-users are analyzed.

2004 Fixed binning schemes: an operational duality between channel and source coding problems with side information
abstract
In this paper, the meaning of duality in terms of the coding operations and the corresponding performance measures are examined. In this paper, operational duality to the channel and source coding problems with side information are extended. A class of deterministic maximal binning schemes is constructed. Each bin corresponds to a maximal channel code and the collection of the codewords in all the bins forms a maximal channel code. The construction of the binning scheme from the individual channel codes is greedy and provides an alternative proof of the coding theorem for the two side information problems.

2004 DHTTP: an efficient and cache-friendly transfer protocol for the web
abstract
Today's HTTP carries Web interactions over client-initiated TCP connections. An important implication of using this transport method is that interception caches in the network violate the end-to-end principle of the Internet, which severely limits deployment options of these caches. Furthermore, while an increasing number of Web interactions are short, and in fact frequently carry only control information and no data, TCP is often inefficient for short interactions We propose a new transfer protocol for the Web, called Dual-Transport HTTP (DHTTP), which splits the traffic between UDP and TCP channels. When choosing the TCP channel, it is the server who opens the connection back to the client. Through server-initiated connections, DHTTP upholds the Internet end-to-end principle in the presence of interception caches, thereby allowing unrestricted caching within backbones. Moreover, the comparative performance study of DHTTP and HTTP using trace-driven simulation as well as testing real HTTP and DHTTP servers showed a significant performance advantage of DHTTP when the bottleneck is at the server and comparable performance when the bottleneck is in the network.

2003 Achieving secure and flexible M-services through tickets
abstract
Web services via wireless technologies, mobile services (M-services), HTTP, and XML have become important for conducting business. W3C XML Protocol Working Group has been developing standard techniques such as Web Services Description Language (WSDL), simple object access protocol (SOAP), universal description discovery and integration (UDDI). However, at this stage, there is no standard technique for access control in M-services. This paper describes a secure and flexible access control scheme and protocol for M-services based on role based access control (RBAC). The access control architecture involves a Trusted Credential Center (TCC), a Trusted Authentication and Registration Center (TARC) and a secure ticket based mechanism for service access. Users and service providers register with the TARC and are authenticated. Based on this, tickets are issued by the TCC to users. Tickets carry authorization information needed for the requested services. In particular, we are able to specify access control polices based on roles. The protocols between the various entities in the model are protected using appropriate security mechanisms such as signatures which are used to verify correctness of the requested service, as well as to direct billing information to the appropriate user. Our architecture supports efficient authentication of users and service providers over different domains and provides a secure access model for services to users. Our model is also able to support anonymity of users. Only the TARC is able to identify misbehaving users. We believe that the proposed architecture forms a good basis for achieving a secure and flexible M-service system.

2002 Formal Authorization Allocation Approaches for Role-Based Access Control Based on Relational Algebra Operations
abstract
We develop formal authorization allocation algorithms for role-based access control (RBAC). The formal approaches are based on relational structure, and relational algebra and operations. The process of user-role assignments is an important issue in RBAC because it may modify the authorization level or imply high-level confidential information to be derived while users change positions and request different roles. There are two types of problems which may arise in user-role assignment. One is related to the authorization granting process. When a role is granted to a user this role may conflict with other roles of the user or together with this role; the user may have or derive a high level of authority. Another is related to authorization revocation. When a role is revoked from a user, the user may still have the role from other roles. To solve these problems, this paper presents an authorization granting algorithm, and weak revocation and strong revocation algorithms that are based on relational algebra. The algorithms can be used to check conflicts and therefore to help allocate roles without compromising the security in RBAC. We describe how to use the new algorithms with an anonymity scalable payment scheme. Finally, comparisons with other related work are discussed.

2001 A Consumer Scalable Anonymity Payment Scheme with Role-Based Access Control
abstract
This paper proposes a secure, scalable anonymity and practical payment protocol for Internet purchases, and uses role based access control (RBAC) to manage the new payment scheme. The protocol uses electronic cash for payment transactions. In this new protocol, from the viewpoint of banks, consumers can improve anonymity if they are worried about disclosure of their identities. An agent provides a higher anonymous certificate and improves the security of the consumers. The agent will certify re-encrypted data after verifying the validity of the content from consumers, but with no private information of the consumers required. With this new method, each consumer can get the required anonymity level, depending on the available time, computation and cost. We also analyse how to prevent a consumer from spending a coin more than once. Furthermore, we use RBAC to manage the new payment scheme. Each user may be assigned one or more roles, and each role can be assigned one or more privileges that are permitted to users in that role. Security administration with RBAC consists of determining operations that must be executed by persons in particular jobs, and assigning employees to proper roles. RBAC can improve system security and reduce conflicts of different roles. The complexities with RBAC can be decreased by mutually exclusive roles and role hierarchies.
