2023 RankDNN: Learning to Rank for Few-Shot Learning
abstract
This paper introduces a new few-shot learning pipeline that casts relevance ranking for image retrieval as binary ranking relation classification. In comparison to image classification, ranking relation classification is sample efficient and domain agnostic. Besides, it provides a new perspective on few-shot learning and is complementary to state-of-the-art methods. The core component of our deep neural network is a simple MLP, which takes as input an image triplet encoded as the difference between two vector-Kronecker products, and outputs a binary relevance ranking order. The proposed RankMLP can be built on top of any state-of-the-art feature extractors, and our entire deep neural network is called the ranking deep neural network, or RankDNN. Meanwhile, RankDNN can be flexibly fused with other post-processing methods. During the meta test, RankDNN ranks support images according to their similarity with the query samples, and each query sample is assigned the class label of its nearest neighbor. Experiments demonstrate that RankDNN can effectively improve the performance of its baselines based on a variety of backbones and it outperforms previous state-of-the-art algorithms on multiple few-shot learning benchmarks, including miniImageNet, tieredImageNet, Caltech-UCSD Birds, and CIFAR-FS. Furthermore, experiments on the cross-domain challenge demonstrate the superior transferability of RankDNN.The code is available at: https://github.com/guoqianyu-alberta/RankDNN.

2023 Gated Enhanced RPN and Hybrid-View for Few-Shot Object Detection
abstract
Few-Shot Object Detection (FSOD) is designed to detect unseen objects using a few examples. Matching between query image and support instance via metric learning has been shown to be an effective FSOD method. In previous work, the quality of proposals generated by the RPN is not yet high due to the lack of a fine-grained matching strategy, and the detector performs feature integration only at the spatial location level is limited. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new method for few-shot object detection which obtains high-quality proposals by the Gated Enhanced RPN (GRPN). To further improve the detection performance from different views, we propose a Hybrid-View Detector to categorize proposals more comprehensively. We perform extensive experiments on the MS-COCO benchmark and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and outperform the state-of-the-art on most shot cases.

2023 Go Closer to See Better: Camouflaged Object Detection via Object Area Amplification and Figure-Ground Conversion
abstract
Camouflaged Object Detection (COD) aims to detect objects well hidden in the environment. The main challenges of COD come from the high degree of texture and color overlapping between the objects and their surroundings. Inspired by that humans tend to go closer to the object and magnify it to recognize ambiguous objects more clearly, we propose a novel three-stage architecture called Search-Amplify-Recognize and design a network SARNet to address the challenges. Specifically, In the Search part, we utilize an attention-based backbone to locate the object. In the Amplify part, to obtain rich searched features and fine segmentation, we design Object Area Amplification modules (OAA) to perform cross-level and adjacent-level feature fusion and amplifying operations on feature maps. Besides, the OAA can be regarded as a simple and effective plug-in module to integrate and amplify the feature maps. The main components of the Recognize part are the Figure-Ground Conversion modules (FGC). The FGC modules alternately pay attention to the foreground and background to precisely separate the highly similar foreground and background. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets show that our model outperforms other SOTA methods not only on COD tasks but also in COD downstream tasks, such as polyp segmentation and video camouflaged object detection. Source codes will be available athttps://github.com/Haozhe-Xing/SARNet.
