| 2016 | Demonstration of hybrid overlay/underlay waveform generator with spectrally compliant cognitive capability via SD-SMSE frameworkabstractIn this paper, a software defined radio (SDR) based waveform generator platform with spectrally compliant cognitive capability for cognitive radio (CR) and dynamic spectrum access (DSA) network is demonstrated. In our previous work, an overlay CR has been demonstrated via a spectrally modulated spectrally encoded (SMSE) framework to autonomously stitch unused spectrum fragments and transmit over non-contiguous frequency bands in a dynamically changing environment. Such an overlay CR can coexist with primary users (PUs) and other secondary users (SUs) without harmful interference by turning off the subcarriers which are shared with active PUs and other SUs on the band. To further enhance spectrum usage, we extend it and implement a hybrid overlay/underlay waveform generator via a soft-decision SMSE (SD-SMSE) framework, where both unused and under-used spectra are explored. Specifically, the hybrid overlay/underlay waveform can transmit over not only unused spectrum bands, but also under-used spectrum and share the spectrum with active PUs and other SUs by underlaying them, since PU/SU has certain capability to tolerant interference as long as the underlay transmission power is lower than such a interference tolerance level (ITL). On the other hand, if any active SU on the band is not a friendly transmission, the hybrid waveform can easily increase the transmission power underlaying with the SU much higher than the ITL to fully disrupt the unfriendly transmission. Moreover, the proposed platform is capable of generating conventional single-carrier waveform with different modulation schemes and radio frequency (RF) parameters. Therefore, the platform implements many desirable functions, realizes coexistence with PUs and other SUs or unfriendly transmission disruption, and maximizes the spectrum efficiency, as well as provides a testbed for cognitive radio and cognitive RF research and development. | 2015 | On the Near-Optimality of Training-Based GLRT Spectrum SensingabstractSpectrum sensing is of utmost importance in cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access systems for achieving spectrum awareness. To provide reliable spectrum awareness, it is critical to develop (near-) optimal sensing techniques and understand achievable performance limits. In this paper, we study likelihood ratio test (LRT)-based methods for detection of a signal of interest (SOI) assuming multiple receive antennas in the presence of spatially correlated additive noise (colored noise). We show that with on/off status information of the SOI available at receiver, a training-based generalized likelihood ratio test (TB-GLRT) method can be designed which approximates the optimal LRT estimator-correlator (EC) detector. Using the inverse Laplace transform and complex Wishart distribution theory, we derive formulas for detection and false alarm probabilities of both LRT-EC and GLRT schemes. The convergence of the TB-GLRT to the LRT-EC is analyzed and proved based on convergence behaviors of the detectors and their decision statistics. Simulation results verify the analytical convergence properties. In addition, the results illustrate the effects of different system design parameters, and demonstrate that the TB-GLRT scheme can provide substantial performance improvement over several existing GLRT methods. | 2013 | Intercarrier Interference Immune Single Carrier OFDM via Magnitude-Keyed Modulation for High Speed Aerial Vehicle CommunicationabstractOrthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered as a strong candidate for next generation wireless communication systems. Compared to traditional OFDM, Single Carrier OFDM (SC-OFDM) has demonstrated excellent bit error rate (BER) performance, as well as low peak to average power ratio (PAPR). Similar to other multi-carrier transmission technologies, SC-OFDM suffers significant performance degradation resulting from intercarrier interference (ICI) in high mobility environments. Existing techniques for OFDM can be directly adopted in SC-OFDM to improve performance, however, this improved performance comes at costs such as decreased throughput. In this paper, we analyze the effect of ICI on an SC-OFDM system and propose a novel modulation scheme. The proposed Magnitude-Keyed Modulation (MKM) modulation provides SC-OFDM system immunity to ICI and with an easy implementation it significantly outperforms OFDM, SC-OFDM and MC-CDMA systems with Phase Shift Keying (PSK) modulation and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) in severe ICI environment. Analysis also illustrates the proposed SC-OFDM system with MKM modulation maintains low PAPR compared to traditional OFDM and SC-OFDM systems with PSK and QAM modulations. Simulation results for different modulation schemes in various ICI environments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed system. Xue Li 0002, Steven Hong, Vasu Chakravarthy, Michael A. | 2012 | CSI Usage over Parallel Fading Channels under Jamming Attacks: A Game Theory StudyabstractConsider a parallel channel with M independent flat-fading subchannels. There exists a smart jammer which has possession of a copy of perfect channel state information (CSI) measured and sent back by a receiver to its transmitter. Under this model, a class of two-person zero-sum games is investigated where either achievable mutual information rate or Chernoff bound is taken as the underlying pay-off function with the strategy space of each player determined by respective power control and hopping functions. More specifically, we have tackled and answered the following three fundamental questions. The first one is about whether the transmitter and jammer should hop or fully use all degrees of freedom over the entire parallel channels given the full CSI available to both of them, i.e. to hop or not to hop. The second question is about the impact of sending back CSI on system performance considering that the smart jammer can exploit CSI to further enhance its interference effects, i.e. to feedback or not to feedback. The last question is about whether the amount of feedback information can be reduced given the mutual restrictions between transmitter and jammer, i.e. when to feedback and when not to. | 2011 | Sensing and Transmission in Probabilistically Interference-Limited Cognitive Radio SystemsabstractIn this paper, we provide a fundamental channel model to characterize the interference effect inherent in cognitive radio systems. Mutual information rates of our proposed probabilistic block interference channels for both primary and secondary users are derived without assuming that receivers have knowledge on channel interference states. Novel constrained optimization problems are then put forward with a constraint on the performance loss margin tolerated by the primary user. Furthermore, we investigate some special cases where conditions are provided to justify the optimality of adopting Neyman-Pearson rule. Also presented are some scenarios in which randomized decision without using sensing measurement is needed to balance the rateloss for PU and throughput gain for SD. | 2011 | Software Defined Radio Implementation of SMSE Based Overlay Cognitive Radio in High Mobility EnvironmentabstractA spectrally modulated spectrally encoded (SMSE) based overlay cognitive radio has been implemented and demonstrated in [1] via GNU software define radio (SDR). However, like most of the current cognitive radio implementations and demonstrations, this work does not consider the mobility between cognitive radio nodes. In a high mobility environment, the frequency offset introduced by Doppler shift leads to loss of the orthogonality among subcarriers. As a direct result, severe inter-carrier interference (ICI) and performance degradation is observed. In our previous work, we have proposed a new ICI cancellation method (namely Total ICI Cancellation) for OFDM [2] and MC-CDMA [3] mobile communication systems, which eliminates the ICI without lowering the transmission rate nor reducing the bandwidth efficiency. In this paper, we apply the total ICI cancellation algorithm onto the SMSE base overlay cognitive radio to demonstrate a high performance cognitive radio in high mobility environment. Specifically, we demonstrate an SMSE based overlay cognitive radio that is capable of detecting primary users in real time and adaptively adjusting its transmission parameters to avoid interference to (and from) primary users. When the primary user transmission changes, the cognitive radio dynamically adjusts its transmission accordingly. Additionally, this cognitive radio maintains seamless real time video transmission between the cognitive radio pair even when large frequency offset is introduced by mobility between CR transmitter and receiver. | 2011 | Performance of Highly Mobile Cognitive Radio Networks with Directional AntennasabstractCognitive radio systems allow secondary users to operate on underutilized licensed spectrum. When considering highly congested communication channels, however, opportunities for channel access based on time or frequency division can be limited for secondary user networks. In this research, we consider leveraging enhanced spatial diversity through directional steerable antennas to allow secondary user channel access in parallel with licensed spectrum users. Furthermore, we consider effects of mobility on directional secondary user networks and introduce a mechanism for maintaining point-to-point directional communication links in the presence of mobility. We study the trade-offs between spatial diversity and coordination overhead to motivate the use of directional antennas, even in highly mobile cognitive radio networks. | 2010 | Total Intercarrier Interference Cancellation for OFDM Mobile Communication SystemsabstractFor orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems, the orthogonality among subcarriers is lost in mobile radio channels due to the frequency offsets caused by mobility. As a direct result, intercarrier interference (ICI) is observed on each and every subcarrier, leading to significant performance degradation. Many ICI cancellation methods such as windowing and frequency domain coding have been proposed in the literature to cancel ICI and improve the BER performance of OFDM in mobile channel. However, the performance improvement achieved by all the existing ICI cancellation methods is far from enough: the BER performance after ICI cancellation is still much worse than the BER performance of original OFDM without ICI. Moreover, popular ICI cancellation methods like ICI self-cancellation reduce ICI at the price of lowering the transmission rate and reducing the bandwidth efficiency. Other frequency-domain coding methods do not reduce the data rate, but produce less reduction in ICI as well. In this paper, we propose a novel ICI cancellation scheme which can eliminate the ICI entirely and offer a OFDM mobile system with the same BER performance of a OFDM system without ICI. More importantly, the proposed ICI cancellation scheme, namely Total ICI cancellation, does not lower the transmission rate or reduce the bandwidth efficiency. Specifically, the total ICI cancellation scheme takes advantage of the orthogonality of the ICI matrix and offers perfect ICI cancellation and significant BER improvement at linearly growing cost. Simulation results in AWGN channel and multi-path fading channel confirm the superb performance of the proposed total ICI cancellation scheme in the presence of frequency offset or time variations in the channel, outperforming all the existing ICI cancellation methods. | 2010 | A Software Defined Radio Based Adaptive Interference Avoidance TDCS Cognitive RadioabstractIn this paper, we implement and demonstrate an adaptive interference avoidance TDCS (Transform-domain Communication System) based cognitive radio via software defined radio implementation. By dynamically notching the occupied bands prior to applying IDFT, the designed cognitive radio communicates without interference to primary users and from primary users, as well as provides coexistence between primary users and secondary users. The designed system applies GNU software radio as the platform, and USRP (Universal Software Radio Peripheral) as the hardware solution. This cognitive radio is capable of detecting primary users in real time and adaptively adjusting its transmission parameters to avoid interference to primary users. Additionally, we have demonstrated that when the primary user transmission changes, the cognitive radio dynamically adjusts its transmission accordingly. We have demonstrated seamless real time video transmission between two cognitive radio nodes, while avoiding interference from primary users and interference to primary users operating in the same spectrum. | 2010 | Novel overlay/underlay cognitive radio waveforms using SD-SMSE framework to enhance spectrum efficiency-part II: analysis in fading channelsabstractInterest in Cognitive Radio (CR) remains strong as the communications community strives to solve the spectrum congestion problem. In conventional CR implementations, interference to primary users is minimized using either overlay waveforms that exploit unused (white) spectrum holes or underlay waveforms that spread their power spectrum density over an ultra-wide bandwidth. In Part I, we proposed a novel hybrid overlay/underlay waveform that realizes benefits of both waveforms and demonstrated its performance in an AWGN channel. This was done by extending the original Spectrally Modulated Spectrally Encoded (SMSE) framework to enable soft decision CR implementations that exploit both unused (white) and underused (gray) spectral areas. In Part II, we analyze and evaluate performance of the proposed hybrid overlay/underlay waveform in frequency selective fading channels. A simulated performance analysis of overlay, underlay and hybrid overlay/ underlay waveforms in frequency selective fading channels is presented and benefits discussed. | 2009 | Intercarrier Interference Immune Single Carrier OFDM via Magnitude Shift Keying ModulationabstractSC-OFDM (single carrier orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) has demonstrated excellent performance in multipath fading channels with very low peak to average power ratio (PAPR). Similar to other multi-carrier transmission technologies such as MC-CDMA and OFDM, SC-OFDM also suffers significant performance degradation to inter-carrier interference (ICI) when there is a frequency offset between the transmitter and receiver or in a high mobility environment. In this paper, we analyze the effect of ICI on SC-OFDM system and propose a novel modulation scheme called Magnitude Shift Keying (MSK) for SC-OFDM system. The MSK modulation provides SC-OFDM system immunity to ICI and significantly outperforms SC-OFDM system and OFDM system with Phase Shift Keying (PSK) modulations in severe ICI environment. Simulation results over AWGN channel and multi-path fading channels with different ICI confirm the effectiveness of the proposed system. | 2009 | Inter-carrier interference self-cancellation in synchronous downlink MC-CDMA systemabstractMC-CDMA (multiple carrier code division multiple access) has been considered a strong candidate for cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access network, due to its high spectral efficiency, easy implementation and the capability of operating over non-contiguous frequency bands. However, like other multi-carrier transmission technologies such as OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing), the orthogonality among subcarriers in MC-CDMA system is lost in a mobile environment, leading to inter-carrier interference (ICI) and performance degradation. In this paper, we apply the ICI self-cancellation scheme previously proposed for OFDM system to orthogonal MC-CDMA system with Hadamard-Walsh codes to diminish ICI and improve BER performance. We show that the ICI self-cancellation scheme for MC-CDMA is equivalent to employing a subset of the Hadamard code matrix. As a direct result, the proposed ICI self cancellation method does not increase the complexity at both transmitter and receiver. To compensate for the network capacity (in terms of the number of users) loss in the proposed ICI self-cancellation method, a second set of orthogonal Hadamard-Walsh codes on the quadrature subcarriers are introduced. The proposed system offers significant BER performance gain than original MC-CDMA with the presence of ICI and same network capacity when BPSK modulation is employed. Simulation results over multi-path fading channel confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, without increasing any complexity. | 2009 | A novel highly accurate log skew normal approximation method to lognormal sum distributionsabstractSums of lognormal random variables occur in many important problems in wireless communications. However, the lognormal sum distribution is known to have no close-form and is difficult to compute numerically. Several approximation methods have already been proposed to approximate the lognormal sum distribution. However, these approximation methods all have their drawbacks: some widely used approximation methods are not very accurate at the lower region, some other approximation methods require the CDF curve from Monte Carlo simulation first. In this paper, we propose a novel approximation method, namely the Log Skew Normal (LSN) approximation, to model and approximate the sum of M lognormal distributed random variables. The proposed LSN approximation method has very high accuracy in most of the region, especially in the lower region. Furthermore, this approximation method does not require the CDF curve from Monte Carlo simulation first. The closed-form probability density function (PDF) of the resulting LSN random variable is presented and its parameters are derived from those of the M individual lognormal random variables by using an moment matching technique. Simulation results on the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of sum of M lognormal random variables in different conditions are used as reference curves to compare various approximation techniques. LSN approximation is found to provide better accuracy over a wide CDF range over other approximation methods. | 2009 | Novel overlay/underlay cognitive radio waveforms using SD-SMSE framework to enhance spectrum efficiency- part i: theoretical framework and analysis in AWGN channelabstractRecent studies suggest that spectrum congestion is primarily due to inefficient spectrum usage rather than spectrum availability. Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) and cognitive radio (CR) are two techniques being considered to improve spectrum efficiency and utilization. The advent of CR has created a paradigm shift in wireless communications and instigated a change in FCC policy towards spectrum regulations. Within the hierarchical DSA model, spectrum overlay and underlay techniques are employed to enable primary and secondary users to coexist while improving overall spectrum efficiency. As employed here, spectrum overlay exploits unused (white) spectral regions while spectrum underlay exploits underused (gray) spectral regions. In general, underlay approaches use more spectrum than overlay approaches and operate below the noise floor of primary users. Spectrally modulated, spectrally encoded (SMSE) signals, to include orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing (OFDM) and multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA), are candidate CR waveforms. The SMSE structure supports and is well suited for CR-based software defined radio (SDR) applications. This paper provides a general soft decision SMSE (SDSMSE) framework that extends the original SMSE framework to achieve synergistic CR benefits of overlay and underlay techniques. This extended framework provides considerable flexibility to design overlay, underlay and hybrid overlay/underlay waveforms that are scenario dependent. Overlay/underlay framework flexibility is demonstrated herein for a family of SMSE signals, including OFDM and MC-CDMA. Analytic derivation of CR error probability for overlay and underlay applications is presented. Simulated performance analysis of overlay, underlay and hybrid overlay/underlay waveforms is also presented and benefits discussed, to include improved spectrum efficiency and channel capacity maximization. Performance analysis of overlay/underlay CR waveform in fading channels will be discussed in Part II of the paper. Vasu Chakravarthy, Xue Li 0002, Zhiqiang Wu 0001, Michael A. Temple, F. | 2008 | Modulation Recognition in Multipath Fading Channels Using Cyclic Spectral AnalysisabstractIn this paper, we propose a novel signal classification method using cyclic spectral analysis and neural networks for multipath fading channels. The proposed system provides excellent classification performance in realistic multipath fading channels at low SNR, while assuming no a priori knowledge of the signal statistics, including carrier frequency, phase offset, or symbol rate. Due to its insensitivity to these statistics and its robustness to multipath fading channels, the spectral coherence function (SOF) is employed in the proposed system to produce a highly reliable classifier. Additionally, by employing a multiple-antenna based system, even greater advantages are achieved by exploiting spatial diversity. Numerical results demonstrate the classifier performance under a variety of channel conditions. Eric C. Like, Vasu Chakravarthy, Robert Husnay, Zhiqiang Wu 0001 |

| 2007 | Reliable Modulation Classification at Low SNR Using Spectral CorrelationabstractIn this paper, we propose a novel signal classification method using cyclic spectral analysis and neural network for cognitive radio applications. In cogni- tive radio, it is desirable to have an accurate and reliable signal classification algorithm which can operate at low signal to noise ratio and without knowledge of the carrier frequency and bandwidth of the target signal. Cyclic spectral analysis has been proven to be a powerful tool for classifying signals. However, the amount of data introduced by spectral analysis is too large for any classifier to employ. Hence, a spectral analysis based feature extraction has to be performed to drastically reduce the data. Specifically, we propose to use both the α profile and the frequency profile of the Spectral Coherence Function (SOF) as the feature. Numerical results show significant performance improvement compared to those of using only the α profile feature. Zhiqiang Wu 0001, Eric C. Like, Vasu Chakravarthy |

| 2005 | Cognitive radio - an adaptive waveform with spectral sharing capabilityabstractThe growth of wireless applications and spectral limitations are serious concerns for both the military and civilian communities. Cognitive radio (CR) technologies expand spectrum efficiency using elements of space, time and frequency diversity that up to now have not been exploited. An adaptive waveform (AW) generation technique is presented which adapts to the changing electromagnetic environment and synthesizes waveform features in the frequency domain. Spectral coexistence with other applications is also addressed and can be accomplished in both static and dynamic environments. Bit error rate (BER) serves as the primary performance metric for evaluating and comparing AW processing with other waveforms and systems. Vasu Chakravarthy, Arnab K. Shaw, Michael A.
