| 2026 | CitiLink-Summ: A Dataset of Discussion Subjects Summaries in European Portuguese Municipal Meeting MinutesabstractMunicipal meeting minutes are formal records documenting the discussions and decisions of local government, yet their content is often lengthy, dense, and difficult for citizens to navigate. Automatic summarization can help address this challenge by producing concise summaries for each discussion subject. Despite its potential, research on summarizing discussion subjects in municipal meeting minutes remains largely unexplored, especially in low-resource languages, where the inherent complexity of these documents adds further challenges. A major bottleneck is the scarcity of datasets containing high-quality, manually crafted summaries, which limits the development and evaluation of effective summarization models for this domain. In this paper, we present CitiLink-Summ, a new corpus of European Portuguese municipal meeting minutes, comprising 120 documents and 2,880 manually hand-written summaries, each corresponding to a distinct discussion subject. Leveraging this dataset, we establish baseline results for automatic summarization in this domain, employing state-of-the-art generative models (e.g., BART, PRIMERA) as well as large language models (LLMs), evaluated with both lexical and semantic metrics such as ROUGE, BLEU, METEOR, and BERTScore. CitiLink-Summ provides the first benchmark for municipal-domain summarization in European Portuguese, offering a valuable resource for advancing NLP research on complex administrative texts. | 2019 | A Brief Overview on the Strategiesto Fight Back the Spreadof False InformationabstractThe proliferation of false information on social networks is one of the hardest challenges in today's society, with implications capable of changing users perception on what is a fact or rumor.Due to its complexity, there has been an overwhelming number of contributions from the research community like the analysis of specific events where rumors are spread, analysis of the propagation of false content on the network, or machine learning algorithms to distinguish what is a fact and what is "fake news".In this paper, we identify and summarize some of the most prevalent works on the different categories studied. Finally, we also discuss the methods applied to deceive users and what are the next main challenges of this area. | 2017 | Detecting Journalistic Relevance on Social Media: A two-case study using automatic surrogate featuresabstractThe expansion of social networks has contributed to the propagation of information relevant to general audiences. However, this is small percentage compared to all the data shared in such online platforms, which also includes private/personal information, simple chat messages and the recent called 'fake news'. In this paper, we make an exploratory analysis on two social networks to extract features that are indicators of relevant information in social network messages. Our goal is to build accurate machine learning models that are capable of detecting what is journalistically relevant. We conducted two experiments on CrowdFlower to build a solid ground truth for the models, by comparing the number of evaluations per post against the number of posts classified. The results show evidence that increasing the number of samples will result in a better performance on the relevancy classification task, even when relaxing in the number of evaluations per post. In addition, results show that there are significant correlations between the relevance of a post and its interest and whether is meaningfully for the majority of people. Finally, we achieve approximately 80% accuracy in the task of relevance detection using a small set of learning algorithms. Álvaro Figueira, Nuno Guimarães |

| 2015 | AFINA-te - A Healthy Lifestyle Information Website, Online Food Diary and Exercise Log Directly Towards ChildrenabstractChildhood obesity is according to the World health Organization one of the most concerning problems today. Educating children to a healthier lifestyle is a difficult task due to the lack of interest or concern that they demonstrate. The interes that children have in technology and the time they spent online in games or slmply surfing lhe web may be seen as an opportunity to instill knowledge about healthy eating and healthy lifestyle. There are already several online health counseling websites but it seems to exist a lack of such platforms direcly towards to children. Afina-te website is an online platform that aims to monilor and educate children to a healthier lifestyle through the exposition of information, interactive applications and educational games. It is also capable of provide feedback about what users eat and the exercise they practice. This paper describes the development and resulting health counseling website. | 2003 | Towards a repository of digital talking booksabstractConsiderable effort has been devoted at# # # to increase and broaden our speech and text data resources. Digital Talking Books (DTB), comprising both speech and text data are, as such, an invaluable asset as multimedia resources. Furthermore, those DTB have been under a speech-to-text alignment procedure, either word or phone-based, to increase their potential in research activities. This paper thus describes the motivation and the method that we used to accomplish this goal for aligning DTBs. This alignment allows specific access interfaces for persons with special needs, and also tools for easily detecting and indexing units (words, sentences, topics) in the spoken books. The alignment tool was implemented in a Weighted Finite State Transducer framework, which provides an efficient way to combine different types of knowledge sources, such as alternative pronunciation rules. With this tool, a 2-hour long spoken book was aligned in a single step in much less than real time. Last but not least, new browsing interfaces, allowing improved access and data retrieval to and from the DTBs, are described in this paper. | 2002 | Annotations as multiple perspectives of video contentabstractThis paper describes a video annotation tool based on a new and flexible model, that gives several perspectives over the same video content. The model was designed in a way that allows having multiple views over the same video data, enabling users with different requirements to have the most appropriate interface. These views, video-lenses, highlight a specific aspect of the video content that is being annotated. Annotations are made using a timeline based interface with multiple tracks, where each track corresponds to a given video-lens. The format used to store and exchange the information is the MPEG-7 standard. The annotation tool (VAnnotator) is being developed in the scope of Vizard, an ambitious project that aims to define a new paradigm for video navigation, annotation, editing and retrieval. The Vizard project includes users, both from the production/archiving area and from the consumer electronics area, that help to define and validate the annotation requirements and functionality. | 1998 | Manipulating concept maps with constrained regionsabstractThis paper addresses the direct manipulation of concept maps. These maps are visually supported by graph-based diagrams. Constraints on nodes, visual attributes and arcs, reflect the syntax and semantic of the underlying conceptual model. Tools allowing the manipulation of concept maps convey these constraints by offering simple feedback hints to user actions. Particular application domains require the use of spatial regions (contexts) to convey equivalence on concept properties or types. In these cases, further restrictions are imposed. Therefore, richer feedback must be supported for effective direct manipulation. The paper proposes an approach to handle spatial contexts in concept maps. The approach provides means to define enhanced feedback on direct manipulation of concepts and relations within and over context boundaries. The technique is based on the separtion of the feedback representations for device and action. It controls their relative distance, mobility and visual attributes. Manipulation of contexts and simultaneous views over contexts are also discussed. Specific behaviors are proposed and a technique to offer coherent views on multiple contexts is presented. The architecture of the system that supports these features is described. Luís Carriço, Nuno Guimarães |

| 1992 | Programming Time in Multimedia User InterfacesabstractThe new media types used in advance user interfaces and interactive systems introduce time as a significant variable. This paper addresses the architectural support and programming tools that should be provided to the programmer to manage the time dependencies. The approach considers that the basic models and programming paradigms adopted in the manipulation and management of time should be isomorphic with the spatial models used in existing graphical user interfaces. | 1991 | IMAGES: A User Interface Development SystemabstractThe paper describes the user interface (UI) environment developed for the SOMIW (Secure Open Multimedia Integrated Workstation) project. The basic goals of the project were the definition of a comprehensive architecture handling all relevant UI concepts and the implementation of an interface generator integrated in the programming environment. Others goals were related to the specific requirements of a multimedia workstation (image, voice synthesis and recognition), distribution and integration with the operating system. The architecture of the user interface management system is based on a conceptual virtual environment defined by an object-oriented computational model, and visualisation and input models. This environment is described in the initial sections, followed by an outline of the specification and generation tools. We conclude by describing the internal details of IMAGES, the implementation techniques in development and the target machines. José Alves Marques, Nuno Guimarães, L. Pinto Simoes |

| 1988 | The Distributed Operating System of the SMD ProjectabstractAbstract This article analyses the structure of the distributed operating system of the SMD project— DIOS. The description of the basic structure is followed by a global view of the services and the supporting kernel of the system. Each service is analysed according to its functionality and implementation. DIOS was implemented on bare machines and on top of commercial operating systems. The port of the system to hetereogeneous environments is discussed and some implementation details are described. In parallel with the research on DIOS a multiprocessor station has been developed. These two projects had clear influences on each other; to illustrate some of the major interdependencies, the performance of DIOS in their particular architecture is analysed. The paper ends with information on the current status of the project and on some planned directions of work. José Alves Marques, João Paulo Cunha, Paulo Guedes, Nuno Guimarães, Alberto Cunha |
