2011 MDS Code Based Signal Space Diversity Techniques with Fast Decoding
abstract
In wireless communication systems, signal space diversity techniques are usually adopted to combat channel fading by exploiting time diversity, frequency diversity, spatial diversity or a combination of them. Most existing schemes to achieve signal space diversity are based on linear constellation spreading. In this paper, we propose a novel nonlinear signal space diversity technique based on maximum distance separable (MDS) codes. The new technique provides a design flexibility for almost any number of diversity channels and desired diversity orders. We also propose a simple and suboptimal diversity channel selection (DCS) decoding for our new scheme. DCS decoding can greatly reduce the decoding complexity at a cost of marginal performance loss relative to the optimal detection while keeping the diversity order. Simulation results show that with the same throughput but a lower decoding and implementation complexity, our scheme can have superior performance than the optimal linear spreading schemes over either independent fading or additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels.

2009 On Optimal Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes With Minimum Decoding Complexity
abstract
Orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) from orthogonal designs have both advantages of complex symbol-wise maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding and full diversity. However, their symbol rates are upper bounded by 3/4 for more than two antennas for complex symbols. To increase the symbol rates, they have been generalized to quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes (QOSTBC) in the literature but the diversity order is reduced by half and the complex symbol-wise ML decoding is significantly increased to complex symbol pair-wise (pair of complex symbols) ML decoding. The QOSTBC has been modified by rotating half of the complex symbols for achieving the full diversity while maintaining the complex symbol pair-wise ML decoding. The optimal rotation angles for any signal constellation of any finite symbols located on both square lattices and equal-literal triangular lattices have been found by Su-Xia, where the optimality means the optimal diversity product (or product distance). QOSTBC has also been modified by Yuen-Guan-Tjhung by rotating information symbols in another way such that it has full diversity and in the meantime it has real symbol pair-wise ML decoding (the same complexity as complex symbol-wise decoding) and the optimal rotation angle for square and rectangular QAM constellations has been found. In this paper, we systematically study general linear transformations of information symbols for QOSTBC to have both full diversity and real symbol pair-wise ML decoding. We present the optimal transformation matrices (among all possible linear transformations not necessarily symbol rotations) of information symbols for QOSTBC with real symbol pair-wise ML decoding such that the optimal diversity product is achieved for both general square QAM and general rectangular QAM signal constellations. Furthermore, our newly proposed optimal linear transformations for QOSTBC also work for general QAM constellations in the sense that QOSTBC have full diversity with good diversity product property and real symbol pair-wise ML decoding. Interestingly, the optimal diversity products for square QAM constellations from the optimal linear transformations of information symbols found in this paper coincide with the ones presented by Yuen-Guan-Tjhung by using their optimal rotations. However, the optimal diversity products for (nonsquare) rectangular QAM constellations from the optimal linear transformations of information symbols found in this paper are better than the ones presented by Yuen-Guan-Tjhung by using their optimal rotations. In this paper, we also present the optimal transformations for the co-ordinate interleaved orthogonal designs (CIOD) proposed by Khan-Rajan for rectangular QAM constellations.

2007 Non-Unitary Super Orthogonal Differential Space-Time Trellis Coding and Decoding
abstract
In this paper, a non-unitary differential space-time coding scheme is proposed based on the super orthogonal space-time trellis coding scheme (SOSTTC). First, we extend the SOSTTC scheme to support quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. Then we present a differential space-time coding scheme based on these power-efficient SOSTTCs. Several low-complexity suboptimal differential decoders are developed based on the per-survivor processing technique (PSP). The performance analysis shows that the proposed PSP decoding schemes only have a 0.4dB performance loss compared with the coherent scheme under slow fading channels. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve much higher coding gain compared with the known unitary space time codes in the high data rate region.

2007 Space-Time Trellis Code Design Based on Super Quasi-Orthogonal Block Codes With Minimum Decoding Complexity
abstract
In this letter, we propose a new family of space-time trellis codes, which are constructed by combining a super set of quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes with minimum decoding complexity with an outer multiple trellis coded modulation encoder. A systematic set-partitioning method for quadratic amplitude modulation constellations is given. The proposed scheme can be used for systems with four or more than four transmit antennas. Furthermore, its decoding complexity is low because its branch metric calculation can be implemented in a symbolwise way. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme has a comparable performance as super quasi-orthogonal space-time trellis codes proposed by Jafarkhani and Hassanpour while providing a lower decoding complexity.

2007 Space-Time Trellis Code Design Based on QAM-MTCM With Trellis Shaping
abstract
In this letter, super-orthogonal space-time trellis codes (SOSTTCs) are extended for quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. A systematic set-partitioning method for QAM constellations is given. Furthermore, trellis shaping based on set partitioning is incorporated in SOSTTCs with QAM symbols to achieve extra shaping gain. Peak constraints can be used to limit the constellation expansion ratio and peak-to-average power ratio

2005 Super orthogonal differential space-time trellis coding and decoding
abstract
In this paper, a differential space-time trellis-coded scheme, based on super orthogonal space-time trellis codes (SOSTTC), is proposed. Based on its trellis structure, a low-complexity suboptimal differential decoder using the per-survival processing technique (PSP) is developed. In slow fading channels, it can approach the performance of SOSTTC with coherent decoding. Furthermore, an adaptive receiver is presented for time-varying channels, in which no training data is needed. Simulation results show that our scheme can achieve a good performance in both slow fading and time-varying fading channels with a reasonable complexity.

2005 On optimal quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes with minimum decoding complexity
abstract
In this paper, we first present a necessary and sufficient condition on linear transformations for an QOSTBC to possess the minimum ML decoding complexity, i.e., real symbol pair-wise decoding. We then present optimal linear transformations of information symbols for quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes (QOSTBC) with minimum ML decoding complexity. The optimality is in the sense that the diversity product (or product distance) is maximized when the mean transmission power is fixed

2005 Super-orthogonal differential space-time trellis coding and decoding
abstract
In this paper, a differential space-time trellis-coded scheme based on super-orthogonal space-time trellis codes (SOSTTCs) is proposed. It achieves full diversity and provides an improved coding gain. Based on the per-survivor processing (PSP) technique, a low-complexity suboptimal differential decoder is developed. In slow fading channels, it can approach the performance of SOSTTC with coherent decoding. Furthermore, in time-varying channels, a bank of recursive least square (RLS) type channel predictors are incorporated into the Viterbi decoder to track the channel variance and the RLS predictors do not need training data and channel statistics. The performance analysis is given. Simulation results are presented to illustrate our analytical results and they show that our scheme can achieve a good performance in both slow fading and time-varying fading channels with modest complexity.

2005 An orthogonal space-time coded partial response CPM system with fast decoding for two transmit antennas
abstract
In this paper, an orthogonal space-time coded partial response continuous phase modulation (OST-PCPM) system with two transmit antennas is proposed. It can achieve full diversity with arbitrary inner memory length and phase smoothing functions of CPM schemes. Based on the orthogonality between signals from two transmit antennas and the proposed differential encoding scheme, a fast decoding algorithm is developed for some special cases. Simulation results show that this scheme can provide much better performance with a reasonable complexity, as compared to one transmit antenna CPM scheme. We also give a suboptimal decoding method that provides a tradeoff between complexity and performance.
