1997 A Binary Shape Coding Method Using Modified MMR
abstract
Content-based coding is the important feature of MPEG-4. This paper provides a detailed description of a binary shape coding method using modified modified modified READ (modified MMR), which is to realize content-based coding for arbitrary shape objects. The main features of this method are: (1) MMR coding is modified for creating macroblock-based coding, (2) inter-frame correlation is utilized, (3) lossy coding is enabled. Simulation results for several sequences show that this method is very effective for binary shape coding.

1997 Image coding making use of B-spline surfaces
abstract
This paper presents a new coding algorithm making use of B-spline surfaces. Points on the surface are regarded as image data, and the values of defining polygon vertices are coded. Simulation results show the possibility that the performance of this algorithm becomes better than that of discrete cosine transform (DCT) when parameter values of the surface are set according to the position and the steepness of edges, and the number of polygon vertices is set according to the fineness of the image and the bit rate. It is known that a B-spline surface is transformed by transforming the defining polygon net. Therefore, using this algorithm, it becomes possible to apply image transformations to compressed data (polygon vertices) instead of to decoded data.

1983 Advanced CAPTAIN System and an Approach to Commercial Service
abstract
The CAPTAIN (character and pattern telephone access information network) system is a Videotex system in Japan. The first phase of the experimental service was carried out from December 1979 to March 1981. Many kinds of surveys were carried out to obtain user opinions of the system performance. Based on the findings obtained, the first experimental system was enhanced and the second phase of experimental service was started in August 1981. Commercial service is scheduled to be launched in 1984 and the development of the commercial system has already been started. This paper outlines the enhanced functions, development of the commercial system, and future development of the CAPTAIN system.
