ProGMLP: A Progressive Framework for GNN-to-MLP Knowledge Distillation with Efficient Trade-offsabstractGNN-to-MLP (G2M) methods have emerged as a promising approach to accelerate Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) by distilling their knowledge into simpler Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs). These methods bridge the gap between the expressive power of GNNs and the computational efficiency of MLPs, making them well-suited for resource-constrained environments. However, existing G2M methods are limited by their inability to flexibly adjust inference cost and accuracy dynamically, a critical requirement for real-world applications where computational resources and time constraints can vary significantly. To address this, we introduce a Progressive framework designed to offer flexible and on-demand trade-offs between inference cost and accuracy for GNN-to-MLP knowledge distillation (ProGMLP). ProGMLP employs a Progressive Training Structure (PTS), where multiple MLP students are trained in sequence, each building on the previous one. Furthermore, ProGMLP incorporates Progressive Knowledge Distillation (PKD) to iteratively refine the distillation process from GNNs to MLPs, and Progressive Mixup Augmentation (PMA) to enhance generalization by progressively generating harder mixed samples. Our approach is validated through comprehensive experiments on eight real-world graph datasets, demonstrating that ProGMLP maintains high accuracy while dynamically adapting to varying runtime scenarios, making it highly effective for deployment in diverse application settings. | 2026 | GUIDER: Uncertainty Guided Dynamic Re-ranking for Large Language Models Based Recommender SystemsabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly integral to recommendation systems, offering sophisticated language understanding and generation capabilities. However, their practical application is often hindered by challenges such as data sparsity, the generation of unreliable or hallucinated recommendations, and a general lack of transparency in their decision-making processes. Existing mitigation strategies frequently introduce significant complexity or computational overhead. To address these limitations, particularly the critical gap in quantifying the confidence of LLM-generated recommendations, we propose GUIDER: Uncertainty Guided Dynamic Re-ranking for Large Language Models based Recommender Systems. This new framework innovatively leverages the logits produced by LLMs as evidence for recommended items. By employing a Dirichlet distribution, GUIDER decomposes the total predictive uncertainty into distinct Data Uncertainty (DU), reflecting inherent data ambiguity, and Model Uncertainty (MU), indicating the model's own conviction. This principled decomposition, achieved with a single inference pass, enhances transparency and trustworthiness. Based on the quantified DU and MU levels, our system dynamically adapts its recommendation strategy---adjusting output diversity---through a four-quadrant analysis that tailors responses to specific uncertainty profiles. Extensive experiments conducted in zero-shot recommendation settings validate the effectiveness of our approach. GUIDER consistently outperforms existing methods in reliability-aware scenarios, demonstrably improving recommendation quality. This framework not only advances the practical deployment of LLM-based recommenders by making them more dependable but also provides a robust foundation for future research into uncertainty-aware generative systems. | 2026 | Equip Pre-ranking with Target Attention by Residual QuantizationabstractThe pre-ranking stage in industrial recommendation systems faces a fundamental conflict between efficiency and effectiveness. While powerful models like Target Attention (TA) excel at capturing complex feature interactions in the ranking stage, their high computational cost makes them infeasible for pre-ranking, which often relies on simplistic vector-product models. This disparity creates a significant performance bottleneck for the entire system. To bridge this gap, we propose TARQ, a novel pre-ranking framework. Inspired by generative models, TARQ's key innovation is to equip pre-ranking with an architecture approximate to TA by Residual Quantization. This allows us to bring the modeling power of TA into the latency-critical pre-ranking stage for the first time, establishing a new state-of-the-art trade-off between accuracy and efficiency. Extensive offline experiments and large-scale online A/B tests at Taobao demonstrate TARQ's significant improvements in ranking performance. Consequently, our model has been fully deployed in production, serving tens of millions of daily active users and yielding substantial business improvements. | 2026 | H-NeiFi: Non-Invasive and Consensus-Efficient Multi-Agent Opinion GuidanceabstractSocial media's openness fosters opinion exchange but complicates guiding users toward global consensus. Existing approaches are often invasive, modifying opinions or forcing cross-group interactions, undermining autonomy and triggering resistance. They also lack long-term planning, risking macro-level polarization despite local agreement. To address this, we propose H-NeiFi, a hierarchical, non-invasive opinion guidance framework. It models experts and non-experts separately and introduces a neighbor filtering mechanism that adaptively shapes communication without altering user opinions. Using multi-agent reinforcement learning with a long-term reward, H-NeiFi optimizes information flow while preserving interaction autonomy. Experiments show that it accelerates consensus by 22.0% to 30.7% and achieves global convergence even without experts, providing a natural and efficient paradigm for social network governance. | 2026 | MessageShift: Fine-Grained Data Augmentation for Graph Neural NetworksabstractGraph Neural Networks (GNNs) have become the dominant paradigm for machine learning on relational data, yet they remain susceptible to overfitting and noise in graph structures. While data augmentation has proven effective for regularization across domains, existing graph methods operate at coarse levels, such as perturbing entire structures or mixing node features. These approaches are context-agnostic and do not target the core computational process of GNNs: message passing. We introduce MessageShift, a novel fine-grained data augmentation paradigm that operates directly on the messages, the atomic units of information, as they flow through the GNN. The core idea is to apply a contextual perturbation to each message by shifting it towards or away from the center of its local neighborhood. This provides a rich regularization effect, capable of both smoothing noisy messages and sharpening distinctive ones. Extensive experiments on a wide range of benchmark datasets demonstrate that MessageShift consistently outperforms strong baselines across multiple GNN backbones. | 2026 | Aligning Multiple Knowledge Graphs in A Single PassabstractEntity alignment (EA) is to identify equivalent entities across different knowledge graphs (KGs), which can help fuse these KGs into a more comprehensive one. Previous EA methods mainly focus on aligning a pair of KGs, and to the best of our knowledge, no existing EA method considers aligning multiple (more than two) KGs. To fill this research gap, in this work, we study a novel problem of aligning multiple KGs and propose an effective framework named MultiEA to solve the problem. First, we embed the entities of all the candidate KGs into a common feature space by a shared KG encoder. Then, we explore three alignment strategies to minimize the distances among pre-aligned entities. In particular, we propose an innovative inference enhancement technique to improve the alignment performance by incorporating high-order similarities. Finally, to verify the effectiveness of MultiEA, we construct two new real-world benchmark datasets and conduct extensive experiments on them. The results show that our MultiEA can effectively and efficiently align multiple KGs in a single pass. We release the source codes of MultiEA at: https://github.com/kepsail/MultiEA. | 2026 | Beyond Single-Granularity Prompts: A Multi-Scale Chain-of-Thought Prompt Learning for GraphabstractThe ''pre-train, prompt'' paradigm, designed to bridge the gap between pre-training tasks and downstream objectives, has been extended from the NLP domain to the graph domain and has achieved remarkable progress. Current mainstream graph prompt-tuning methods modify input or output features using learnable prompt vectors. However, existing approaches are confined to single-granularity (e.g., node-level or subgraph-level) during prompt generation, overlooking the inherently multi-scale structural information in graph data, which limits the diversity of prompt semantics. To address this issue, we pioneer the integration of multi-scale information into graph prompt and propose a Multi-Scale Graph Chain-of-Thought (MSGCOT) prompting framework. Specifically, we design a lightweight, low-rank coarsening network to efficiently capture multi-scale structural features as hierarchical basis vectors for prompt generation. Subsequently, mimicking human cognition from coarse-to-fine granularity, we dynamically integrate multi-scale information at each reasoning step, forming a progressive coarse-to-fine prompt chain. Extensive experiments on eight benchmark datasets demonstrate that MSGCOT outperforms the state-of-the-art single-granularity graph prompt-tuning method, particularly in few-shot scenarios, showcasing superior performance. | 2026 | Trusted Multi-View Learning Under Noisy SupervisionabstractMulti-view learning methods often focus on improving decision accuracy while neglecting the decision uncertainty, which significantly restricts their applications in safety-critical scenarios. To address this, trusted multi-view learning methods estimate prediction uncertainties by learning class distributions from each instance. However, these methods heavily rely on high-quality ground-truth labels. This motivates us to delve into a new problem: how to develop a reliable multi-view learning model under the guidance of noisy labels? We propose the Trusted Multi-view Noise Refining (TMNR) method to address this challenge by modeling label noise arising from low-quality data features and easily-confused classes. TMNR employs evidential deep neural networks to construct view-specific opinions that capture both beliefs and uncertainty. These opinions are then transformed through noise correlation matrices to align with the noisy supervision, where matrix elements are constrained by sample uncertainty to reflect label reliability. Furthermore, considering the challenge of jointly optimizing the evidence network and noise correlation matrices under noisy supervision, we further propose Trusted Multi-view Noise Re-Refining (TMNR$^{\mathbf{2}}$2), which disentangles this complex co-training problem by establishing different training objectives for distinct modules. TMNR$^{\mathbf{2}}$2 identifies potentially mislabeled samples through evidence-label consistency and generates pseudo-labels from neighboring information. By assigning clean samples to optimize evidential networks and noisy samples to guide noise correlation matrices, respectively, TMNR$^{\mathbf{2}}$2 reduces mapping interference and achieves stabilized training. We empirically evaluate our methods against state-of-the-art baselines on 7 multi-view datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that TMNR$^{\mathbf{2}}$2 significantly outperforms baseline methods, with average accuracy improvements of 7% on datasets with 50% label noise. | 2026 | Multi-modal fusion approaches for stock market prediction: A comprehensive surveyabstractMulti-modal fusion effectively integrates diverse data sources, i.e., prices and financial news, to capture complementary information, significantly enhancing stock market prediction. This survey presents a comprehensive survey of multi-modal fusion approaches in stock prediction, proposing a generalized pipeline and a novel hierarchical taxonomy. First, we identify five typical data modalities, detail their feature extraction methods, and summarize publicly available datasets. Second, we review existing fusion methods under a unified taxonomy comprising two main paradigms: Intra-stock Multi-modal Fusion (covering early feature-level to late decision-level integration) and Inter-stock Multi-modal Fusion (capturing inter-stock relational modalities via graph-based modeling). We comprehensively compare their working mechanisms, strengths, and limitations. Finally, we highlight persistent challenges and promising directions for future researches. | 2026 | A General Global and Local Pre-Training Framework for 3D Medical Image SegmentationabstractAccurate target segmentation from computed tomography (CT) scans is crucial for surgical robots to perform clinical surgeries successfully. However, the lack of medical image data and annotations has been the biggest obstacle to learning robust medical image segmentation models. Self-supervised learning can effectively address this problem by providing a strategy to pre-train a model with unlabeled data, and then fine-tune downstream tasks with limited labeled data. Existing self-supervised methods fail to simultaneously utilize the abundant global anatomical structure information and local feature differences in medical imaging. In this work, we propose a new strategy for the pre-training framework, which uses the three-dimensional anatomical structure of medical images and specific task and background cues to segment volumetric medical images with limited annotations. Specifically, we propose (1) learning intrinsic patterns of volumetric medical image structures through multiple sub-tasks, and (2) designing a multi-level background cube contrastive learning strategy to enhance the target feature representation by exploiting the differences between the specific target and background. We conduct extensive evaluations on two publicly available datasets. Under limited annotation settings, the proposed method yields significant improvements compared to other self-supervised learning techniques. The proposed method achieves within 6% of the baseline performance using only five labeled CT volumes for training. Jianguo Ju, Ziyu Guan, Dandan Qiu, Long Chen 0007, Fei Xie 0007, Wei Zhao 0019

Learning From Target-Level Incomplete Annotation: A Novel Perspective for Weakly-Supervised Multi-Lesion SegmentationabstractAccurately segmenting various clinically significant lesion areas from whole-body computed tomography (CT) scans is crucial for automated diagnosis and treatment planning. Training an automatic segmentation model effectively is desirable, but it heavily relies on a large scale of pixel-wise labeled data, which is laborious, time-consuming, and expensive to obtain. Existing weakly-supervised segmentation approaches often struggle with regions nearby the lesion boundaries. This paper proposes a target-level incomplete annotation (TIA) for medical image annotation and a multi-lesion segmentation framework. TIA annotates only one complete target region per slice to accurately capture boundaries with minimal annotated effort. Multi-lesion segmentation framework is a weakly supervised learning method, which first implements a medical cut-paste segmentation branch to provide images with pure target pixels and boundaries for training the lesion segmentation model, second utilizes prior anatomical information in the prior-assisted target localization branch to locate and identify target regions, third generates high-confidence pseudo-labels by combining the outputs of cut-paste segmentation branch and prior-assisted target localization branch. A graph neural network (GNN) is adopted to correct noisy labels and propagate reliably labeled pixels to unlabeled pixels. By utilizing TIA, our framework can achieve state-of-the-art results for medical image segmentation, which is validated on Crohn's dataset. | 2025 | Biased Incomplete Multi-View LearningabstractConsidering the ubiquitous phenomenon of missing views in multi-view data, incomplete multi-view learning is a crucial task in many applications. Existing methods usually follow an impute-then-predict strategy for handling this problem. However, they often assume that the view-missing patterns are uniformly random in multi-view data, which does not agree with real-world scenarios. In practice, view-missing patterns often vary across different classes. For example, in the medical field, patients with rare diseases would take more examinations than those with common diseases; in the financial field, high-risk customers tend to receive evaluations from more views than ordinary ones. Hence, we often observe that data-rich classes suffer limited views while data-poor classes suffer limited samples. Previous methods would typically fail due to such biased view-missing patterns. This motivates us to delve into a new biased incomplete multi-view learning problem. To this end, we develop a Reliable Incomplete Multi-view Learning (RIML) method. RIML is a simple yet effective learning-free imputation framework that goes beyond the conventional approaches by considering information from all classes, rather than just relying on individual views or within-class samples. Specifically, we utilize an inter-class association matrix that allows data-poor classes to refer the knowledge from data-rich classes. This enables the construction of more reliable view-specific distributions, from which we perform multiple samplings to recover missing views. Additionally, to obtain a reliable multi-view representation for downstream tasks, we develop an enhanced focal loss with a category-aware marginal term to learn a more distinguishable feature space. Experiments on five multi-view datasets demonstrate that RIML significantly outperforms existing methods in both accuracy and robustness. Haishun Chen, Ziyu Guan, Wei Zhao 0019

AGMixup: Adaptive Graph Mixup for Semi-supervised Node ClassificationabstractMixup is a data augmentation technique that enhances model generalization by interpolating between data points using a mixing ratio lambda in the image domain. Recently, the concept of mixup has been adapted to the graph domain through node-centric interpolations. However, these approaches often fail to address the complexity of interconnected relationships, potentially damaging the graph's natural topology and undermining node interactions. Furthermore, current graph mixup methods employ a one-size-fits-all strategy with a randomly sampled lambda for all mixup pairs, ignoring the diverse needs of different pairs. This paper proposes an Adaptive Graph Mixup (AGMixup) framework for semi-supervised node classification. AGMixup introduces a subgraph-centric approach, which treats each subgraph similarly to how images are handled in Euclidean domains, thus facilitating a more natural integration of mixup into graph-based learning. We also propose an adaptive mechanism to tune the mixing ratio lambda for diverse mixup pairs, guided by the contextual similarity and uncertainty of the involved subgraphs. Extensive experiments across seven datasets on semi-supervised node classification benchmarks demonstrate AGMixup's superiority over state-of-the-art graph mixup methods. | 2025 | Audience-Aware and Self-Adaptive Multi-Interest Modeling for Sharing Rate Prediction in Affiliate MarketingabstractAffiliate marketing, a component of modern digital marketing, leverages partnerships among merchants, promoters, and consumers to enhance item visibility and drive sales. Promoters act as critical intermediaries, sharing items with their communities to promote items while earning commissions. Accurate prediction of the sharing rate of promoters enables platforms to optimize recommendation performance, thereby improving promotional efficiency. However, existing related methods are mainly designed for consumer-oriented scenarios (C-end), and face significant limitations in modeling the promoters (B-end), which are typically characterized by audience group attachment. Specifically, three core challenges emerge: (1) how to organically integrate audience preferences while maintaining promoter dominance, (2) how to accommodate promoters' diverse interest scopes, and (3) how to capture the complex one-to-many relationships between promoters and their audiences. For Challenge (1), we employ a dynamic routing mechanism based on interest capsules to model the diverse interests of promoters, where audience groups are used to optimize the interest routing via a novel dual-channel attention mechanism, thus allowing audience groups to explicitly participate in the promoter decision-making process with an auxiliary role. For Challenge (2), a parameter-free, confidence-aware interest activation mechanism is introduced to adaptively select sparse interest capsules. For Challenge (3), we pioneer the use of hypergraphs in CTR prediction to model one-to-many relationships between promoters and audiences. Extensive experiments are conducted on two real-world datasets to validate the effectiveness of our approach. Furthermore, the model is deployed on the Alimama platform, which hosts over 100,000 promoters. Online A/B testing results demonstrate that our method achieves a 5.31% average improvement over online baselines. | 2025 | Dynamic Network-Based Two-Stage Time Series Forecasting for Affiliate MarketingabstractIn recent years, affiliate marketing has emerged as a revenue-sharing strategy where merchants collaborate with promoters to promote their products. It not only increases product exposure but also allows promoters to earn a commission. This paper addresses the pivotal yet under-explored challenge in affiliate marketing: accurately assessing and predicting the contributions of promoters in product promotion. We design a novel metric for evaluating the indirect contributions of the promoter, called propagation scale. Unfortunately, existing time series forecasting techniques fail to deliver accurate predictions due to the propagation scale being influenced by multiple factors and the inherent complexities arising from dynamic scenarios. To address this issue, we decouple the network structure from the node signals and propose a two-stage solution: initially, the basic self-sales and network structure prediction are conducted separately, followed by the synthesis of the propagation scale. Specifically, we design a graph convolution encoding scheme based on descendant neighbors and incorporate hypergraph convolution to efficiently capture complex promotional dynamics. Additionally, three auxiliary tasks are employed: self-sales prediction for base estimations, descendant prediction to synthesize propagation scale, and promoter activation prediction to mitigate high volatility issues. Extensive offline experiments on large-scale industrial datasets validate the superiority of our method. We further deploy our model on Alimama platform with over 100,000 promoters, achieving a 9.29% improvement in GMV and a 5.89% increase in sales volume. | 2025 | SkipNode: On Alleviating Performance Degradation for Deep Graph Convolutional Networks (Extended Abstract)abstractGraph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) are powerful tools for learning representations in graph-structured data. However, their performance tends to degrade with increased model depth due to over-smoothing. Although previous studies attribute degradation to over-smoothing, this work identifies the mutually reinforcing effects of over-smoothing and gradient vanishing as the root cause. In this paper, we propose SkipNode, a plug-and-play module that mitigates degradation in deep GCNs. SkipNode introduces node-sampling in each convolutional layer to selectively skip convolutions, preventing over-smoothing by reducing the depth experienced by specific nodes and facilitating gradient backpropagation. We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that SkipNode effectively curtails over-smoothing and gradient vanishing, improving deep GCN performance across diverse tasks. Extensive evaluations show SkipNode's robustness and superior performance over state-of-the-art (SOTA) baselines, establishing it as a practical solution for training deep GCNs. | 2025 | A Translation-Based Heterogeneous Graph Neural Network for Multiple Knowledge Graphs AlignmentabstractKnowledge graph (KG) alignment aims to integrate different KGs through the linkage of equivalent entities across them, enabling more comprehensive knowledge and facilitating information fusion. Existing methods, whether translation-based or GNN-based, typically solve this problem by projecting entities and relations into a low-dimensional embedding space, each demonstrating unique advantages in aligning a pair of KGs. However, few studies consider combining these approaches to model translation semantics of various orders. To fill this gap, we propose KG2HIN, a novel KG encoder, which innovatively views head entities, relations, and tail entities as three types of nodes, thereby transforming KGs into HINs (heterogeneous information networks). KG2HIN can adaptively learn the importance of various orders of translation semantics by seamlessly combining the HGNN aggregator operator with the translation operator in KG embedding methods. Building upon the KG2HIN encoder, we further develop a network to effectively and efficiently align multiple (more than two) KGs concurrently, a much more challenging task than the traditional pair-KG alignment task. Compared with the state-of-the-art baseline, KG2HIN significantly improves the M-Hits@1 (accuracy) score from 10.25% to 73.05% on the DBP4 dataset and from 41.19% to 97.81% on the DWY-3 dataset, while requiring significantly fewer model parameters and less training time. | 2025 | Discrepancy-Aware Graph Mask Auto-EncoderabstractMasked Graph Auto-Encoder, a powerful graph self-supervised training paradigm, has recently shown superior performance in graph representation learning. Existing works typically rely on node contextual information to recover the masked information. However, they fail to generalize well to heterophilic graphs where connected nodes may be not similar, because they focus only on capturing the neighborhood information and ignoring the discrepancy information between different nodes, resulting in indistinguishable node representations. In this paper, to address this issue, we propose a Discrepancy-Aware Graph Mask Auto-Encoder (DGMAE). It obtains more distinguishable node representations by reconstructing the discrepancy information of neighboring nodes during the masking process. We conduct extensive experiments on 17 widely-used benchmark datasets. The results show that our DGMAE can effectively preserve the discrepancies of nodes in low-dimensional space. Moreover, DGMAE significantly outperforms state-of-the-art graph self-supervised learning methods on three graph analytic including tasks node classification, node clustering, and graph classification, demonstrating its remarkable superiority. | 2025 | Enhancing Homophily-Heterophily Separation: Relation-Aware Learning in Heterogeneous GraphsabstractReal-world networks usually have a property of node heterophily, that is, the connected nodes usually have different features or different labels. This heterophily issue has been extensively studied in homogeneous graphs but remains under-explored in heterogeneous graphs, where there are multiple types of nodes and edges. Capturing node heterophily in heterogeneous graphs is very challenging since both node/edge heterogeneity and node heterophily should be carefully taken into consideration. Existing methods typically convert heterogeneous graphs into homogeneous ones to learn node heterophily, which will inevitably lose the potential heterophily conveyed by heterogeneous relations. To bridge this gap, we propose Relation-Aware Separation of Homophily and Heterophily (RASH), a novel contrastive learning framework that explicitly models high-order semantics of heterogeneous interactions and adaptively separates homophilic and heterophilic patterns. Particularly, RASH introduces dual heterogeneous hypergraphs to encode multi-relational bipartite subgraphs and dynamically constructs homophilic graphs and heterophilic graphs based on relation importance. A multi-relation contrastive loss is designed to align heterogeneous and homophilic/heterophilic views by maximizing mutual information. In this way, RASH simultaneously resolves the challenges of heterogeneity and heterophily in heterogeneous graphs. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of RASH across various downstream tasks. The code is available at: https://github.com/zhengziyu77/RASH. | 2025 | Defining and Discovering Hyper-meta-paths for Heterogeneous HypergraphsabstractHeterogeneous hypergraph is a kind of structural data that contains multiple types of nodes and multiple types of hyperedges. Each hyperedge type corresponds to a specific multi-ary relation (called hyper-relation) among subsets of nodes, which goes beyond traditional pair-wise relations in simple graphs. Existing representation learning methods for heterogeneous hypergraphs typically learn embeddings for nodes and hyperedges based on graph neural networks. Although achieving promising performance, they are still limited in capturing more complex structural features and richer semantics conveyed by the composition of various hyper-relations. To fill this research gap, in this work, we propose the concept of hyper-meta-path for heterogeneous hypergraphs, which is defined as the composition of a sequence of hyper-relations. Besides, we design an attention-based heterogeneous hypergraph neural network (HHNN) to automatically learn the importance of hyper-meta-paths. By exploiting useful ones, HHNN is able to capture more complex structural features to boost the model's performance, as well as leverage their conveyed semantics to improve the model's interpretability. Extensive experiments show that HHNN can achieve significantly better performance than state-of-the-art baselines, and the discovered hyper-meta-paths bring good interpretability for the model predictions. | 2025 | Cross-Modal Guided Visual Representation Learning for Social Image RetrievalabstractSocial images are often associated with rich but noisy tags from community contributions. Although social tags can potentially provide valuable semantic training information for image retrieval, existing studies all fail to effectively filter noises by exploiting the cross-modal correlation between image content and tags. The current cross-modal vision-and-language representation learning methods, which selectively attend to the relevant parts of the image and text, show a promising direction. However, they are not suitable for social image retrieval since: (1) they deal with natural text sequences where the relationships between words can be easily captured by language models for cross-modal relevance estimation, while the tags are isolated and noisy; (2) they take (image, text) pair as input, and consequently cannot be employed directly for unimodal social image retrieval. This paper tackles the challenge of utilizing cross-modal interactions to learn precise representations for unimodal retrieval. The proposed framework, dubbed CGVR (Cross-modal Guided Visual Representation), extracts accurate semantic representations of images from noisy tags and transfers this ability to image-only hashing subnetwork by a carefully designed training scheme. To well capture correlated semantics and filter noises, it embeds a priori common-sense relationship among tags into attention computation for joint awareness of textual and visual context. Experiments show that CGVR achieves approximately 8.82 and 5.45 points improvement in MAP over the state-of-the-art on two widely used social image benchmarks. CGVR can serve as a new baseline for the image retrieval community. The code is provided at https://github.com/zhaowanqing/CGVR. | 2025 | Adaptive Task-Aware Refining Network for Few-Shot Fine-Grained Image ClassificationabstractThe main challenge for Few-Shot Fine-Grained (FSFG) image classification is to learn discriminative feature representations with few labeled samples. In response to this challenge, task-aware few-shot learning methods have been introduced. However, existing approaches focus only on how to correlate task information with feature representations, while overlooking two critical issues. The first one is how to obtain accurate task representations with few labeled samples, to accurately get the feature region related to the task. The second one is how to reduce the impact of the background noise introduced in the process of acquiring feature regions, to alleviate the overfitting problem under the few-shot setting. To address these issues, we propose the Adaptive Task-Aware Refining Network (ATR-Net). Unlike previous approaches that use the center of class as task representations, ATR-Net enables the model to adaptively select task-specific information by interacting with the patches of all local features, resulting in a more accurate task representation. Moreover, a Channel Region-Aware Module (CRAM) and a Refinement Filtering Module (RFM) are designed to better acquire task-level information and instance-level information, to overcome the impact of background noise. We conduct extensive experiments on four public fine-grained datasets. The results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior performance. | 2025 | Learning Cross-View Consistent 3D Keypoints for Object 6D Pose EstimationabstractAccurate 6D object pose estimation from RGB images is crucial for various computer vision applications, such as augmented reality, robotic manipulation and autonomous driving. Existing methods often rely on extensive labeled data, either manually annotated or synthetically generated, which can be laborious and impractical for real-world deployment. To address these challenges, we propose OK-POSE, a keypoint-based 6D object pose estimation method that leverages relative transformations between viewpoints for training. By utilizing pairs of images with object annotations and relative transformation information, OK-POSE automatically learns to detect 3D keypoints of objects, enabling geometrically and visually consistent pose estimation. The simplicity and accessibility of obtaining relative transformation information, which can be acquired from inexpensive binocular cameras or common smartphone devices, significantly reduce labeling costs and mitigate domain gap issues associated with synthetic data. Experimental results demonstrate that OK-POSE achieves competitive performance compared to methods relying on explicit 3D annotations or object 3D models. Moreover, we provide insights into the data collection process and introduce OK-POSE++, an enhanced version with optimized network architecture and loss functions, yielding further improvements in performance. Our approach offers a practical solution for 6D object pose estimation, suitable for real-world applications in scenarios where extensive 3D annotations or object models are unavailable. | 2025 | Side Channel Attacks on GPRS Standard Encryption AlgorithmsabstractGEA-1 and its successor GEA-2 are stream ciphers that were selected as the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) standard encryption algorithms, used to protect the communication between phones and base stations from eavesdropping. These stream ciphers, once widely used for GPRS encryption in the late 1990s and early 2000s, are surprisingly still supported in many current mobile phones and in numerous developing regions even today. GEA-2a is a more secure, improved version of GEA-2 designed by Ding et al. in 2022. Side channel attack utilizes easily accessible information from cryptographic devices, such as power consumption, electromagnetic radiation, and runtime, to obtain secret information in the cryptographic systems. Side channel attack is a powerful attack method that has been successfully applied in many stream ciphers, such as TRIVIUM and GRAIN-128-AEAD. In this article, we put forward an automated framework that can mount side channel attack on stream ciphers with structures similar to the GPRS standard encryption algorithms GEA-1 and GEA-2. We use satisfiability modulo theory for modeling, while considering the software and hardware implementation of the algorithms, and use Microsoft’s open source solver Z3 to solve the constructed instances. The experimental results indicate that the internal states of GEA-1, GEA-2, and GEA-2a in the keystream generation phase can be recovered practically under the HW/32 model. For models where the solution time is too long, by guessing a small number of bits, the state bits can be fully recovered within an acceptable time. | 2025 | Change Masked Modality Alignment Network for Multimodal Change DetectionabstractUsing multimodal remote sensing images for change detection (CD) can significantly improve the feasibility and reliability in challenging environments. However, the differences in imaging mechanisms make multimodal images highly heterogeneous. A key challenge for multimodal CD (MCD) is that the heterogeneity of the modalities and changes in ground objects are intertwined during processing. To address this issue, this article proposes a change masked modality alignment network (CMMAN), which uses a multitask framework consisting of one CD branch and two image modal transformation (IMT) branches. Specifically, to ensure a unified feature space, bi-temporal multimodal images are first input into the same Swin-Transformer-based encoder. The extracted features are then fed simultaneously into the CD branch and separately into the two IMT branches. In the CD branch, the decoder is also designed based on the Swin-Transformer, and a weakly modality-correlated feature enhancement (WMCFE) module is introduced to mitigate the interference of modality heterogeneity on CD. For the two IMT branches, both employ a generative adversarial network (GAN) to transform between modalities, and the distributions of features from different modalities are aligned through simultaneous optimization. Uniquely, the change probability map predicted by the CD branch is utilized to mask the change regions in IMT, further decoupling ground object changes and modal heterogeneity. Experimental results on multiple public datasets demonstrate that the proposed CMMAN significantly improves MCD performance and shows good compatibility and portability with various common backbone networks. | 2025 | D3PM: Dual-Stream Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model for Change Detection in Multimodal Remote Sensing ImagesabstractDetecting land cover changes from multi-temporal and multi-modal remote sensing images acquired by different sensors at the same location is a complex yet highly valuable task. Recently, diffusion models, exemplified by the Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model (DDPM), have garnered significant attention for their remarkable performance and straightforward architecture. These models excel in image generation, distribution modeling, and feature extraction, making them highly promising for advancing Multimodal Change Detection (MCD). In this paper, we propose a Dual-stream Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model (D3PM) to address the challenges of MCD. Specifically, D3PM leverages DDPM to design two distinct processing streams, one for each image modality. The first stream employs an unconditional DDPM, whose denoising encoder-decoder network can achieve robust feature extraction. The second stream employs a conditional DDPM to facilitate modal translation, enabling the extracted features to align with the characteristics of the other modality, thereby improving cross-modality comparability. To further enhance performance, we constructed a CD task branch based on the decoder features of the two DDPMs across multiple denoising time steps. Additionally, we designed a collaborative learning optimization strategy with asynchronous time steps, fostering cross-task knowledge sharing and mutual enhancement while preserving the integrity of individual task learning. Experimental results on multiple public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed D3PM, which achieves efficient modal transformation and alignment, mitigates modal heterogeneity interference, and significantly improves detection performance. | 2025 | Adaptive Center-Focused Hybrid Attention Network for Change Detection in Hyperspectral ImagesabstractHyperspectral images (HSIs) capture extensive spatial and spectral information, facilitating detailed change detection (CD) of complex land covers. However, the high correlation among spectral data can lead to information redundancy, increasing processing dimensions and introducing irrelevant or detrimental data to CD. To address these challenges, we propose an adaptive center-focused hybrid attention network (ACFHAN) for CD in HSIs. This network adaptively emphasizes the spatial regions and spectral channels most pertinent to CD while suppressing irrelevant information. The architecture establishes an end-to-end mapping from the two HSIs to the change results, featuring multiple center-focused hybrid attention blocks (CFHABs). Each CFHAB integrates two different attention modules, including an adaptive spatial–spectral hybrid self-attention (S2HSA) module that dynamically adjusts spatial–spectral feature weights and a center-focused attention (CFA) module that enhances the area most relevant to the center pixel to be classified. Additionally, to tackle the challenges of expensive labeling, we further designed a multiscale superpixel-based data augmentation method which combines traditional unsupervised and supervised methods to provide sufficient low-cost but high-confidence labeled data for CD. | 2025 | BARNet: Boundary-Aware Refinement Network for Weakly Supervised Change DetectionabstractRemote sensing change detection plays a critical role in urban land management and disaster assessment. However, most existing methods rely on expensive and time-consuming pixel-level labels, limiting their practical applicability. Weakly supervised change detection methods, such as only using image-level labels, offer the potential to reduce annotation costs while maintaining robust detection performance. However, this coarse supervisory information often makes it difficult to accurately capture fine-grained details, resulting in poor pixel-level detection accuracy. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel Boundary-Aware Refinement Network (BARNet) for weakly supervised change detection, which utilizes a two-stage framework that first generates pixel-level pseudo labels via image-level CD activation maps, then subsequently trains a pixel-level CD network using these generated pseudo labels. Specifically, the first stage adopted a teacher-student distillation image-level CD network, which integrated a multi-scale boundary feature attention module, along with activation ambiguity loss and contrastive learning loss as feature separation constraints, to generate high-quality pseudo labels. In the second stage, these pseudo labels are used to provide deep supervision a pixel-level CD network, where the boundary-aware decoupling module further refines boundary information, leading to more precise segmentation of change areas. Extensive experiments on three public datasets demonstrate that BARNet not only achieves state-of-the-art performance in the weakly supervised change detection domain but also shows competitive performance with existing fully supervised methods, significantly reducing annotation costs while maintaining detection accuracy. With its strong performance, BARNet demonstrates great potential for practical applications in scenarios with limited supervision. | 2025 | Layer-Interaction Adaptive Pruning for Remote Sensing Scene ClassificationabstractThe advancement of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) has enhanced remote sensing scene classification on satellites. However, the increased computational complexity of CNNs will impose a substantial burden on satellite hardware, thereby hindering the practical application. Although various pruning techniques have been developed to reduce the scale of CNNs by assessing the importance of model parameters, these weight-based methods often lead to a degradation in model performance when the original model fails to provide meaningful parameters at under-trained conditions. In this paper, we introduce a novel Layer-interaction Adaptive Pruning (LiAP) method designed to streamline under-trained models. Unlike conventional approaches, LiAP evaluates the importance of neurons based on the distribution of eigenvalues rather than individual parameters. Specifically, this is achieved by projecting the weight matrix of each convolutional layer into the eigenspace, where the eigenvalues are utilized to assess the redundancy of filters. Then each space will be assigned a fined score based on the eigenvalue distribution to provide a robust measure of filter importance. Compared to weight-based pruning methods, LiAP maintains consistent evaluation accuracy between well-trained and under-trained models, as the eigenspace is inherently robust to variations in the weight parameter space. We conducted extensive experiments on VGG-16 and ResNet-50 architectures using datasets such as AID, NWPU-RESISC45, PatternNet, and WHU-RS19 over various data partitions. Notably, our method achieved State-of-the-Art (SOTA) reductions in both FLOPs and parameters for VGG-16 across the aforementioned datasets. These results underscore the efficacy of LiAP in enhancing the efficiency and applicability of CNNs in satellite-based remote sensing tasks. | 2025 | Unsupervised Entity Alignment Based on Personalized Discriminative Rooted TreeabstractEntity Alignment (EA) is to link potential equivalent entities across different knowledge graphs (KGs). Most existing EA methods are supervised as they require the supervision of seed alignments, i.e., manually specified aligned entity pairs. Very recently, several EA studies have made some attempts to get rid of seed alignments. Despite achieving preliminary progress, they still suffer two limitations: (1) The entity embeddings produced by their GNN-like encoders lack personalization since some of the aggregation subpaths are shared between different entities. (2) They cannot fully alleviate the distribution distortion issue between candidate KGs due to the absence of supervised signals. In this work, we propose a novel unsupervised entity alignment approach called UNEA to address the above two issues. First, we parametrically sample a tree neighborhood rooted at each entity, and accordingly develop a tree attention aggregation mechanism to extract a personalized embedding for each entity. Second, we introduce an auxiliary task of maximizing the mutual information between the input and the output of the KG encoder, which serves as a regularization to prevent the distribution distortion. Extensive experiments show that our UNEA achieves a new state-of-the-art for the unsupervised EA task, and can even outperform many existing supervised EA baselines. | 2025 | SAAF: Self-Adaptive Attention Factor-Based Taylor-Pruning on Convolutional Neural NetworksabstractNowadays, pruning techniques have drawn attention to convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for reducing the consumption of computation resources. In particular, the Taylor-based method simplifies the evaluation of importance for each filter as the product of the gradient and weight value of the output features, which outperforms other methods in reductions of parameters and floating point operations (FLOPs). However, the Taylor-based method sacrifices too much accuracy when the overall pruning rate is relatively large compared with other pruning algorithms. In this article, we propose a self-adaptive attention factor (SAAF) to improve the performance of the slimmed model when conventional Taylor-based pruning is utilized under higher pruning. Specifically, SAAF can be calculated by leveraging the remaining ratio of filters at the early pruning stage of the Taylor-based method, and then, some pruned filters can be recovered for improving the accuracy of the slimmed model in terms of SAAF. It means that SAAF can protect filters from being overslimmed to eliminate the degeneration of Taylor-based pruning when the pruning rate is large as well as can compress models apparently across various datasets. We test the efficiency of SAAF on VGG-16 and ResNet-50 with CIFAR-10, Tiny-ImageNet, ImageNet-1000, and remote sensing images. Our method outperforms the traditional Taylor-based method obviously in accuracy, and there are only tiny sacrifices in the reduction of parameters and FLOPs, which is better than other pruning methods. | 2024 | Entropy Induced Pruning Framework for Convolutional Neural NetworksabstractStructured pruning techniques have achieved great compression performance on convolutional neural networks for image classification tasks. However, the majority of existing methods are sensitive with respect to the model parameters, and their pruning results may be unsatisfactory when the original model is trained poorly. That is, they need the original model to be fully trained, to obtain useful weight information. This is time-consuming, and makes the effectiveness of the pruning results dependent on the degree of model optimization. To address the above issue, we propose a novel metric named Average Filter Information Entropy (AFIE). It decomposes the weight matrix of each layer into a low-rank space, and quantifies the filter importance based on the distribution of the normalized eigenvalues. Intuitively, the eigenvalues capture the covariance among filters, and therefore could be a good guide for pruning. Since the distribution of eigenvalues is robust to the updating of parameters, AFIE can yield a stable evaluation for the importance of each filter no matter whether the original model is trained fully. We implement our AFIE-based pruning method for three popular CNN models of AlexNet, VGG-16, and ResNet-50, and test them on three widely-used image datasets MNIST, CIFAR-10, and ImageNet, respectively. The experimental results are encouraging. We surprisingly observe that for our methods, even when the original model is trained with only one epoch, the AFIE score of each filter keeps identical to the results when the model is fully-trained. This fully indicates the effectiveness of the proposed pruning method. Yiheng Lu, Ziyu Guan, Yaming Yang 0002, Wei Zhao 0019, Maoguo Gong

NodeMixup: Tackling Under-Reaching for Graph Neural NetworksabstractGraph Neural Networks (GNNs) have become mainstream methods for solving the semi-supervised node classification problem. However, due to the uneven location distribution of labeled nodes in the graph, labeled nodes are only accessible to a small portion of unlabeled nodes, leading to the under-reaching issue. In this study, we firstly reveal under-reaching by conducting an empirical investigation on various well-known graphs. Then, we demonstrate that under-reaching results in unsatisfactory distribution alignment between labeled and unlabeled nodes through systematic experimental analysis, significantly degrading GNNs' performance. To tackle under-reaching for GNNs, we propose an architecture-agnostic method dubbed NodeMixup. The fundamental idea is to (1) increase the reachability of labeled nodes by labeled-unlabeled pairs mixup, (2) leverage graph structures via fusing the neighbor connections of intra-class node pairs to improve performance gains of mixup, and (3) use neighbor label distribution similarity incorporating node degrees to determine sampling weights for node mixup. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficacy of NodeMixup in assisting GNNs in handling under-reaching. The source code is available at https://github.com/WeigangLu/NodeMixup. | 2024 | Reliable Conflictive Multi-View LearningabstractMulti-view learning aims to combine multiple features to achieve more comprehensive descriptions of data. Most previous works assume that multiple views are strictly aligned. However, real-world multi-view data may contain low-quality conflictive instances, which show conflictive information in different views. Previous methods for this problem mainly focus on eliminating the conflictive data instances by removing them or replacing conflictive views. Nevertheless, real-world applications usually require making decisions for conflictive instances rather than only eliminating them. To solve this, we point out a new Reliable Conflictive Multi-view Learning (RCML) problem, which requires the model to provide decision results and attached reliabilities for conflictive multi-view data. We develop an Evidential Conflictive Multi-view Learning (ECML) method for this problem. ECML first learns view-specific evidence, which could be termed as the amount of support to each category collected from data. Then, we can construct view-specific opinions consisting of decision results and reliability. In the multi-view fusion stage, we propose a conflictive opinion aggregation strategy and theoretically prove this strategy can exactly model the relation of multi-view common and view-specific reliabilities. Experiments performed on 6 datasets verify the effectiveness of ECML. The code is released at https://github.com/jiajunsi/RCML. Jiajun Si, Ziyu Guan, Wei Zhao 0019, Yue Wu 0004, Xiyue Gao

SC2: Towards Enhancing Content Preservation and Style Consistency in Long Text Style TransferabstractText style transfer (TST) aims to vary the style polarity of text while preserving the semantic content.Although recent advancements have demonstrated remarkable progress in short TST, it remains a relatively straightforward task with limited practical applications. The more comprehensive long TST task presents two challenges: (1) existing methods encounter difficulties in accurately evaluating content attributes in multiple words, leading to content degradation; (2) the conventional vanilla style classifier loss encounters obstacles in maintaining consistent style across multiple generated sentences. In this paper, we propose a novel method SC2, where a multilayer Joint Style-Content Weighed (JSCW) module and a Style Consistency loss are designed to address the two issues. The JSCW simultaneously assesses the amounts of style and content attributes within a token, aiming to acquire a lossless content representation and thereby enhancing content preservation. The multiple JSCW layers further progressively refine content representations. We design a style consistency loss to ensure the generated multiple sentences consistently reflect the target style polarity. Moreover, we incorporate a denoising non-autoregressive decoder to accelerate the training. We conduct plentiful experiments and the results show significant improvements of SC2 over competitive baselines. Our code: Jie Zhao 0013, Ziyu Guan, Wei Zhao 0019

AdaGMLP: AdaBoosting GNN-to-MLP Knowledge DistillationabstractGraph Neural Networks (GNNs) have revolutionized graph-based machine learning, but their heavy computational demands pose challenges for latency-sensitive edge devices in practical industrial applications. In response, a new wave of methods, collectively known as GNN-to-MLP Knowledge Distillation, has emerged. They aim to transfer GNN-learned knowledge to a more efficient MLP student, which offers faster, resource-efficient inference while maintaining competitive performance compared to GNNs. However, these methods face significant challenges in situations with insufficient training data and incomplete test data, limiting their applicability in real-world applications. To address these challenges, we propose AdaGMLP, an AdaBoosting GNN-to-MLP Knowledge Distillation framework. It leverages an ensemble of diverse MLP students trained on different subsets of labeled nodes, addressing the issue of insufficient training data. Additionally, it incorporates a Node Alignment technique for robust predictions on test data with missing or incomplete features. Our experiments on seven benchmark datasets with different settings demonstrate that AdaGMLP outperforms existing G2M methods, making it suitable for a wide range of latency-sensitive real-world applications. | 2024 | Dynamic Evidence Decoupling for Trusted Multi-view LearningabstractMulti-view learning methods often focus on improving decision accuracy, while neglecting the decision uncertainty, limiting their suitability for safety-critical applications. To mitigate this, researchers propose trusted multi-view learning methods that estimate classification probabilities and uncertainty by learning the class distributions for each instance. However, these methods assume that the data from each view can effectively differentiate all categories, ignoring the semantic vagueness phenomenon in real-world multi-view data. Our findings demonstrate that this phenomenon significantly suppresses the learning of view-specific evidence in existing methods. We propose a Consistent and Complementary-aware trusted Multi-view Learning (CCML) method to solve this problem. We first construct view opinions using evidential deep neural networks, which consist of belief mass vectors and uncertainty estimates. Next, we dynamically decouple the consistent and complementary evidence. The consistent evidence is derived from the shared portions across all views, while the complementary evidence is obtained by averaging the differing portions across all views. We ensure that the opinion constructed from the consistent evidence strictly aligns with the ground-truth category. For the opinion constructed from the complementary evidence, we allow it for potential vagueness in the evidence. We compare CCML with state-of-the-art baselines on one synthetic and six real-world datasets. The results validate the effectiveness of the dynamic evidence decoupling strategy and show that CCML significantly outperforms baselines on accuracy and reliability. | 2024 | Enhancing Criminal Case Matching through Diverse Legal FactorsabstractCriminal case matching endeavors to determine the relevance between different criminal cases.Conventional methods predict the relevance solely based on instance-level semantic features and neglect the diverse legal factors (LFs), which are associated with diverse court judgments.Consequently, comprehensively representing a criminal case remains a challenge for these approaches. Moreover, extracting and utilizing these LFs for criminal case matching face two challenges: (1) the manual annotations of LFs rely heavily on specialized legal knowledge; (2) overlaps among LFs may potentially harm the model's performance. In this paper, we propose a two-stage framework named Diverse Legal Factor-enhanced Criminal Case Matching (DLF-CCM).Firstly, DLF-CCM employs a multi-task learning framework to pre-train an LF extraction network on a large-scale legal judgment prediction dataset. In stage two, DLF-CCM introduces an LF de-redundancy module to learn shared LF and exclusive LFs.Moreover, an entropy-weighted fusion strategy is introduced to dynamically fuse the multiple relevance generated by all LFs.Experimental results validate the effectiveness of DLF-CCM and show its significant improvements over competitive baselines.Code: https://github.com/jiezhao6/DLF-CCM. | 2024 | New Practical Attacks on GEA-1 Based on a New-Found WeaknessabstractGEA‐1, a proprietary stream cipher, was initially designed and used to protect against eavesdropping general packet radio service (GPRS) between the phone and the base station. Now, a variety of current mobile phones still support this standard cipher. In this paper, a structural weakness of the GEA‐1 stream cipher that has not been found in previous works is discovered and analyzed. That is the probability that two different inputs of GEA‐1 generate the identical keystream can be up to 2 −7.30 , which is quite high compared with an ideal stream cipher that generates random sequences. Based on this newfound weakness, a new practical distinguishing attack on GEA‐1 is proposed, which shows that the keystreams generated by GEA‐1 are far from random and can be easily distinguished with a practical time cost. After then, a new practical key recovery attack on GEA‐1 is presented. It has a time complexity of 2 21.02 GEA‐1 encryptions and requires only seven related keys, which is much less than the existing related key attack on GEA‐1. The experimental results show that GEA‐1 can be broken within about 41.75 s on a common PC in the related key setting. These cryptanalytic results show that GEA‐1 cannot provide enough security and should be immediately prohibited to be supported in the massive GPRS devices. Lin Ding 0001, Zhengting Li, Ziyu Guan

SNPF: Sensitiveness-Based Network Pruning Framework for Efficient Edge ComputingabstractConvolutional neural networks (CNNs) are used comprehensively in the field of the Internet of Things (IoTs), such as mobile phones, surveillance, and satellite. However, the deployment of CNNs is difficult because the structure of hand-designed networks is complicated. Therefore, we propose a sensitiveness-based network pruning framework (SNPF) to reduce the size of original networks to save computation resources. SNPF will evaluate the importance of each convolutional layer by the reconstruction of inference accuracy when we add extra noise to the original model, and then remove filters in terms of the degree of sensitiveness for each layer. Compared with previous weight-norm-based pruning methods, such as “$\mathscr {C}_{1}$-norm,” “BatchNorm-Pruning,” and “Taylor-Pruning,” SNPF is robust to the update of parameters, which can avoid the inconsistency of evaluation for filters if the parameters of the pretrained model are not fully optimized. Namely, SNPF, can prune the network at the early training stage to save computation resources. We test our method on three prevalent models of VGG-16, ResNet-18, ResNet-50 and a customized Conv-4 with 4 convolutional layers. They are then tested on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, ImageNet, and MNIST, respectively. Impressively, we observe that even when the VGG-16 is only trained with 50 epochs, we can get the same evaluation of layer importance as the results when the model is fully trained. Additionally, we can also achieve comparable pruning results to previous weight-oriented methods on the other three models. Yiheng Lu, Ziyu Guan, Wei Zhao 0019, Maoguo Gong, Wen-Jing Wang 0002

Breaking the DECT Standard Cipher With Lower Time CostabstractThe DECT Standard Cipher (DSC) is a proprietary stream cipher used for encryption in the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT), which is a standard for short range cordless communication and widely deployed worldwide both in residential and enterprise environments. New weaknesses of the DSC stream cipher which are not discovered in previous works are explored and analyzed in this paper. Based on these weaknesses, new practical key recovery attacks and distinguishing attack on DSC with lower time cost are proposed. The first cryptanalytic result show that DSC can be broken in about 13.12 seconds in the known IV setting, when an offline phase that takes about 58.33 minutes is completed. After then, a distinguishing attack on DSC in the related key chosen IV setting is given, which has a time complexity of only 2 encryptions and a success probability of almost 1. Finally, based on the slide property, a key recovery attack on DSC with practical complexities is proposed. The experimental result shows that DSC can be broken on a common PC within about 44.97 seconds in the multiple related key setting. The attacks on DSC proposed in this paper clearly show that a well-designed initialization is absolutely necessary to design a secure stream cipher. Lin Ding 0001, Zhengting Li, Ziyu Guan

CDI-NSTSEG: A Clinical Diagnosis-Inspired Effective and Efficient Framework for Non-Salient Small Tumor SegmentationabstractTo accurately segment various clinical lesions from computed tomography(CT) images is a critical task for the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. However, current segmentation frameworks are tailored to specific diseases, and limited frameworks can detect and segment different types of lesions. Besides, it is another challenging problem for current segmentation frameworks to segment visually inconspicuous and small-scale tumors (such as small intestinal stromal tumors and pancreatic tumors). Our proposed framework, CDI-NSTSEG, efficiently segments small non-salient tumors using multi-scale visual information and non-local target mining. CDI-NSTSEG follows the diagnostic process of clinicians, including preliminary screening, localization, refinement, and segmentation. Specifically, we first explore to extract the unique features at three different scales (1×, 0.5×, and 1.5×) based on the scale space theory. Our proposed scale fusion module (SFM) hierarchically fuses features to obtain a comprehensive representation, similar to preliminary screening in clinical diagnosis. The global localization module (GLM) is designed with a non-local attention mechanism. It captures the long-range semantic dependencies of channels and spatial locations from the fused features. GLM enables us to locate the tumor from a global perspective and output the initial prediction results. Finally, we design the layer focusing module (LFM) to gradually refine the initial results. LFM mainly conducts context exploration based on foreground and background features, focuses on suspicious areas layer-by-layer, and performs element-by-element addition and subtraction to eliminate errors. Our framework achieves state-of-the-art segmentation performance on small intestinal stromal tumor and pancreatic tumor datasets. | 2024 | SkipNode: On Alleviating Performance Degradation for Deep Graph Convolutional NetworksabstractGraph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) suffer from performance degradation when models go deeper. However, earlier works only attributed the performance degeneration to over-smoothing. In this paper, we conduct theoretical and experimental analysis to explore the fundamental causes of performance degradation in deep GCNs: over-smoothing and gradient vanishing have a mutually reinforcing effect that causes the performance to deteriorate more quickly in deep GCNs. On the other hand, existing anti-over-smoothing methods all perform full convolutions up to the model depth. They could not well resist the exponential convergence of over-smoothing due to model depth increasing. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective plug-and-play module,SkipNode, to overcome the performance degradation of deep GCNs. It samples graph nodes in each convolutional layer to skip the convolution operation. In this way, both over-smoothing and gradient vanishing can be effectively suppressed since (1) not all nodes'features propagate through full layers and, (2) the gradient can be directly passed back through “skipped” nodes. We provide both theoretical analysis and empirical evaluation to demonstrate the efficacy ofSkipNodeand its superiority over SOTA baselines. | 2024 | Reliability-Driven Local Community Search in Dynamic NetworksabstractCommunity search over large dynamic graph has become an important research problem in modern complex networks, such as the online social network, collaboration network and biological networks. Network data in the time-varied environment has motivated several recent studies to identify the evolution of the communities. However, these studies mostly match communities of different snapshot or utilize the aggregation of the disjoint structural information and ignores the cohesion continuity. To fill this research gap, in this work, we propose a novel$(\theta ,k)$-core reliable community (CRC) and define the reliable community search problem which jointly considers member engagement, connection strength and cohesion continuity of the community in the dynamic network. We propose an online search algorithm based on eligible edge filtering and we further construct the Weighted Core Forest-Index (WCF-index) and develop efficient index-based querying algorithm with strong pruning properties. We also propose top-$l$reliable community search problem that couples query based distance to reduce the free rider effect in local community search and support flexible multiple query vertices. | 2023 | Progressive Deep Multi-View Comprehensive Representation LearningabstractMulti-view Comprehensive Representation Learning (MCRL) aims to synthesize information from multiple views to learn comprehensive representations of data items. Prevalent deep MCRL methods typically concatenate synergistic view-specific representations or average aligned view-specific representations in the fusion stage. However, the performance of synergistic fusion methods inevitably degenerate or even fail when partial views are missing in real-world applications; the aligned based fusion methods usually cannot fully exploit the complementarity of multi-view data. To eliminate all these drawbacks, in this work we present a Progressive Deep Multi-view Fusion (PDMF) method. Considering the multi-view comprehensive representation should contain complete information and the view-specific data contain partial information, we deem that it is unstable to directly learn the mapping from partial information to complete information. Hence, PDMF employs a progressive learning strategy, which contains the pre-training and fine-tuning stages. In the pre-training stage, PDMF decodes the auxiliary comprehensive representation to the view-specific data. It also captures the consistency and complementarity by learning the relations between the dimensions of the auxiliary comprehensive representation and all views. In the fine-tuning stage, PDMF learns the mapping from the original data to the comprehensive representation with the help of the auxiliary comprehensive representation and relations. Experiments conducted on a synthetic toy dataset and 4 real-world datasets show that PDMF outperforms state-of-the-art baseline methods. The code is released at https://github.com/winterant/PDMF. | 2023 | Unbalanced Multi-view Deep LearningabstractMost existing multi-view learning methods assume that the dimensions of different views are similar. In real-world applications, it is often the case that the dimension of a view may be extremely small compared with these of other views, resulting in an unbalanced multi-view learning problem. Previous methods for this problem have at least one of the following drawbacks: (1) despising the information of low dimensional views; (2) constructing balanced view-specific inter-instance similarity graphs or employing decision-level fusion, which cannot well learn multi-level inter-view correlations and is limited to category-related tasks such as clustering. To eliminate all these drawbacks, we present an Unbalanced Multi-view Deep Learning (UMDL) method. Considering a low dimensional view usually contains multiple patterns, we construct an overcomplete dictionary with its atoms exceeding the dimension of the original data. We transfer the original data into a combination of atoms and obtain a higher dimensional representation. We propose a sparse multi-view fusion paradigm to explicitly capture the complementarity of multi-view data in a flexible manner. Moreover, we construct positive and negative examples via balanced similarity graphs and employ contrastive learning to train UMDL in a self-supervised manner. Experiments conducted on a toy example and 7 balanced/unbalanced datasets show that UMDL outperforms baseline methods and can be well applied to downstream classification and segmentation tasks. | 2023 | Energy-Based CNN Pruning for Remote Sensing Scene ClassificationabstractConvolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been adopted to classify the remote sensing scene image. However, the application of these complicated networks on the satellite platform is difficult because of the limited computation resources. Therefore, we propose an energy-based filter pruning framework (EFPF) to reduce the size of the original model. The energy can be obtained through the eigenvalues of each weight tensor by singular value decomposition (SVD). Specifically, we calculate the energy of each layer by the ratio of eigenvalues that are lower than a specified truncation parameter and then remove filters from the original layer in light of the degree of energy. The EFPF is reliable because SVD techniques can capture the covariance among all filters from the original weight tensor, and therefore, the energy from the eigenvalues can reflect the redundancy of the filters. (i.e., if the distribution of eigenvalues is sharp, then the energy among filters will be lower, and the redundancy will be higher.) Surprisingly, the EFPF can reduce the FLOPs and parameters, as well as improve the top1 accuracy obviously when the VGG-16 and ResNet-50 are adopted to classify the AID, NWPU45, PatternNet, and WHU19 datasets. Additionally, the EFPF can achieve similar pruning results when the original model is fully-trained (converge) and under-trained (In-converge), which means we can save the training computation resources for the original model. | 2023 | Uncertainty-Aware Multiview Deep Learning for Internet of Things ApplicationsabstractAs an essential approach in many Internet of Things (IoT) applications, multiview learning synthesizes multiple features to achieve more comprehensive descriptions of data items. Most of the previous studies on multiview learning have been dedicated to increasing the prediction accuracy, while ignoring the reliability of the decision. This would limit their deployment in high-risk IoT and industrial applications such as the automated vehicle. Although a trusted multiview classification model has been proposed recently, it cannot well deal with the highly complementary multiview data. In this work, we present an evidential multiview deep learning (EMDL) method to make reliable decisions. EMDL first seeks view-specific evidence of each category, which could be termed as the amount of support to each category collected from data. It then dynamically fuses different views at the evidence level to construct the multiview common evidence and makes reliable prediction accordingly (strong evidence indicates high prediction confidence). In particular, we establish a degradation layer to learn the mappings from the common evidence (comprehensive information) to view-specific evidences (partial information) for evidence fusion. It aims to explicitly model consistent and complementary relations in multiview data at the evidence level. We apply EMDL on a synthetic toy dataset and five real-world datasets (three datasets are related to industrial scenarios). Experiments show that EMDL outperforms state-of-the-art baseline methods. | 2023 | Interpretable and Efficient Heterogeneous Graph Convolutional NetworkabstractGraph Convolutional Network (GCN) has achieved extraordinary success in learning representations of nodes in graphs. However, regarding Heterogeneous Information Network (HIN), existing HIN-oriented GCN methods still suffer from two deficiencies: (1) they cannot flexibly explore all possible meta-paths and extract the most useful ones for each target object, which hinders both effectiveness and interpretability; (2) before performing aggregation, they often require some additional time-consuming pre-processing operations, which increase the computational complexity. To address the above issues, we propose an interpretable and efficient Heterogeneous Graph Convolutional Network (ie-HGCN) to learn the representations of objects in HINs. It is designed as a hierarchical aggregation architecture, i.e., object-level aggregation and type-level aggregation. The new architecture can automatically evaluate all possible meta-paths within a length limit, and discover and exploit the most useful ones for each target object, i.e., at fine granularity. It also reduces the computational cost by avoiding additional time-consuming pre-processing operations. Theoretical analysis shows its ability to evaluate the usefulness of all possible meta-paths, its connection to the spectral graph convolution on HINs, and its quasi-linear time complexity. Extensive experiments on four real network datasets demonstrate its interpretability, efficiency as well as its superiority against thirteen baselines. | 2023 | Graph Substructure Assembling Network With Soft Sequence and Context AttentionabstractThere has been a surge of researchers' interest in building predictive models over graphs. However, the overwhelming complexity of graph space often makes it challenging to extract interpretable and discriminative structural features for graph classification. In this work, we propose a new graph neural network model called Substructure Assembling Network (SAN) to learn graph representations for classification. The key innovation is a unified Substructure Assembling Unit (SAU), which is a variant of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) designed to hierarchically assemble useful pieces of graph components so as to fabricate discriminative substructures. A key challenge is that SAUs need to process the neighbors of a node sequentially while no natural order is defined therein. SAN tries to make the model insensitive to neighborhood orders by randomly shuffling neighborhood sequences in training. However, this could suffer high variance, especially when the neighborhood size is large. Hence, we further propose to equip SAN with a novel module named Soft Sequence with Context Attention (SSCA). SAN-SSCA employs the proposed context attention technique to learn the best "soft" permutation of the neighbors w.r.t. classification. It helps the model achieve higher accuracy as well as lower variance. Experiments confirm the effectiveness of SAN-SSCA. Yaming Yang 0002, Ziyu Guan, Wei Zhao 0019, Weigang Lu 0001, Bo Zong

Charge Prediction by Constitutive Elements Matching of CrimesabstractCharge prediction is to automatically predict the judgemental charges for legal cases. To convict a person/unit of a charge, the case description must contain matching instances of the constitutive elements (CEs) of that charge. This knowledge of CEs is a valuable guide for the judge in making final decisions. However, it is far from fully exploited for charge prediction in the literature. In this paper we propose a novel method named Constitutive Elements-guided Charge Prediction (CECP). CECP mimics human's charge identification process to extract potential instances of CEs and generate predictions accordingly. It avoids laborious labeling of matching instances of CEs by a novel reinforcement learning module which progressively selects potentially matching sentences for CEs and evaluates their relevance. The final prediction is generated based on the selected sentences and their relevant CEs. Experiments on two real-world datasets show the superiority of CECP over competitive baselines. | 2022 | Self-supervised Heterogeneous Graph Pre-training Based on Structural ClusteringabstractRecent self-supervised pre-training methods on Heterogeneous Information Networks (HINs) have shown promising competitiveness over traditional semi-supervised Heterogeneous Graph Neural Networks (HGNNs). Unfortunately, their performance heavily depends on careful customization of various strategies for generating high-quality positive examples and negative examples, which notably limits their flexibility and generalization ability. In this work, we present SHGP, a novel Self-supervised Heterogeneous Graph Pre-training approach, which does not need to generate any positive examples or negative examples. It consists of two modules that share the same attention-aggregation scheme. In each iteration, the Att-LPA module produces pseudo-labels through structural clustering, which serve as the self-supervision signals to guide the Att-HGNN module to learn object embeddings and attention coefficients. The two modules can effectively utilize and enhance each other, promoting the model to learn discriminative embeddings. Extensive experiments on four real-world datasets demonstrate the superior effectiveness of SHGP against state-of-the-art unsupervised baselines and even semi-supervised baselines. | 2022 | Deep objectness hashing using large weakly tagged photosabstractCNN-based hashing methods have greatly boosted the performance of image retrieval, under the strong supervision of large amounts of manually annotated labels. In recent years, a large number of social media images with user tags have been generated on the Internet. These images can be regarded as weakly labeled training data, which can provide rich samples for training hash network, and greatly reduce the cost of obtaining training data. However, there are noise and visual irrelevant tags in user tags, and different tags may describe different objects in the image. In the previous CNN-based hashing method, a training image usually corresponds to a manual label and generates a hash code. These methods are difficult to use the image described by user tags with noise. For solving the above problem, we propose a CNN-based objectness hash learning method using user tags as a guide for training. First of all, the user tags are roughly filtered to remove noise tags that are not related to the visual content of images. Secondly, we quantify user tags into a unified semantic space and extract the highest-frequency words of the semantic space from similar objectness areas as their labels. Then, these objectness areas with their labels are grouped into a series of triple units as training data. So that the generated hash code can inherit the semantic similarity of the objectness areas well, that is, the Hamming distance between hash codes generated by similar objectness areas is closer, the reverse is the farther. Experimental results on NUS-WIDE and Flickr datasets show that our method can effectively extract object-level semantic information from weak user tags, and improve the accuracy of image retrieval. | 2022 | TelecomNet: Tag-Based Weakly-Supervised Modally Cooperative Hashing Network for Image RetrievalabstractWe are concerned with using user-tagged images to learn proper hashing functions for image retrieval. The benefits are two-fold: (1) we could obtain abundant training data for deep hashing models; (2) tagging data possesses richer semantic information which could help better characterize similarity relationships between images. However, tagging data suffers from noises, vagueness and incompleteness. Different from previous unsupervised or supervised hashing learning, we propose a novel weakly-supervised deep hashing framework which consists of two stages: weakly-supervised pre-training and supervised fine-tuning. The second stage is as usual. In the first stage, we propose two formulations Tag-basEd weakLy-supErvised Modally COoperative hashing Network (TelecomNet) and Generalized TelecomNet (GTelecomNet). Rather than performing supervision on tags, TelecomNet first learns an observed semantic embedding vector for each image from attached tags and then uses it to guide hashing learning. GTelecomNet introduces a novel semantic network to exploit more precise semantic information. By carefully designing the optimization problem, they can well leverage tagging information and image content for hashing learning. The framework is general and does not depend on specific deep hashing methods. Empirical results on real world datasets show that they significantly increase the performance of state-of-the-art deep hashing methods. | 2022 | Reliable Community Search in Dynamic NetworksabstractSearching for local communities is an important research problem that supports advanced data analysis in various complex networks, such as social networks, collaboration networks, cellular networks, etc. The evolution of such networks over time has motivated several recent studies to identify local communities in dynamic networks. However, these studies only utilize the aggregation of disjoint structural information to measure the quality and ignore the reliability of the communities in a continuous time interval. To fill this research gap, we propose a novel (θ, k )- core reliable community (CRC) model in the weighted dynamic networks, and define the problem of most reliable community search that couples the desirable properties of connection strength, cohesive structure continuity, and the maximal member engagement. To solve this problem, we first develop a novel edge filtering based online CRC search algorithm that can effectively filter out the trivial edge information from the networks while searching for a reliable community. Further, we propose an index structure, Weighted Core Forest-Index (WCF-index), and devise an index-based dynamic programming CRC search algorithm, that can prune a large number of insignificant intermediate results and support efficient query processing. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments systematically to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed algorithms on eight real datasets under various experimental settings. | 2022 | Adversarial Incomplete Multiview Subspace Clustering NetworksabstractMultiview clustering aims to leverage information from multiple views to improve the clustering performance. Most previous works assumed that each view has complete data. However, in real-world datasets, it is often the case that a view may contain some missing data, resulting in the problem of incomplete multiview clustering (IMC). Previous approaches to this problem have at least one of the following drawbacks: 1) employing shallow models, which cannot well handle the dependence and discrepancy among different views; 2) ignoring the hidden information of the missing data; and 3) being dedicated to the two-view case. To eliminate all these drawbacks, in this work, we present the adversarial IMC (AIMC) framework. In particular, AIMC seeks the common latent representation of multiview data for reconstructing raw data and inferring missing data. The elementwise reconstruction and the generative adversarial network are integrated to evaluate the reconstruction. They aim to capture the overall structure and get a deeper semantic understanding, respectively. Moreover, the clustering loss is designed to obtain a better clustering structure. We explore two variants of AIMC, namely: 1) autoencoder-based AIMC (AAIMC) and 2) generalized AIMC (GAIMC), with different strategies to obtain the multiview common representation. Experiments conducted on six real-world datasets show that AAIMC and GAIMC perform well and outperform the baseline methods. Hongmin Liu 0001, Ziyu Guan, Xunlian Wu, Jiale Tan, Beilei Ling

New Attacks on the GPRS Encryption Algorithms GEA-1 and GEA-2abstractGEA-1 and its successor GEA-2 are two stream ciphers, designed to protect against eavesdropping General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) between the phone and the base station. They were widely used for GPRS encryption in the late 1990s and during the 2000s, and are surprisingly still supported in a range of current mobile phones. In this paper, new key recovery attacks on GEA-1 and GEA-2 are proposed by combining with the time-memory trade-off technique. The new attacks significantly reduce the time and memory costs of the previous attacks on GEA-1, and show that GEA-1 only offers 32-bit (out of 64) security. Furthermore, the slide properties of GEA-1 and GEA-2 are first found and used to explore practical related key attacks. The results show that GEA-1 and GEA-2 can be broken on a common PC within about 0.81 and 6.2 seconds in the multiple related key setting, respectively. Finally, an improved variant of GEA-2 called GEA-2a is proposed. The reasons for making the changes from GEA-2 are explained in detail, which indicates that GEA-2a has significantly better resistance than GEA-2 against all known attacks and can offer 64-bit security. | 2021 | Keypoint-Graph-Driven Learning Framework for Object Pose EstimationabstractMany recent 6D pose estimation methods exploited object 3D models to generate synthetic images for training because labels come for free. However, due to the domain shift of data distributions between real images and synthetic images, the network trained only on synthetic images fails to capture robust features in real images for 6D pose estimation. We propose to solve this problem by making the network insensitive to different domains, rather than taking the more difficult route of forcing synthetic images to be similar to real images. Inspired by domain adaption methods, a Domain Adaptive Keypoints Detection Network (DAKDN) including a domain adaption layer is used to minimize the discrepancy of deep features between synthetic and real images. A unique challenge here is the lack of ground truth labels (i.e., keypoints) for real images. Fortunately, the geometry relations between keypoints are invariant under real/synthetic domains. Hence, we propose to use the domain-invariant geometry structure among keypoints as a "bridge" constraint to optimize DAKDN for 6D pose estimation across domains. Specifically, DAKDN employs a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) block to learn the geometry structure from synthetic images and uses the GCN to guide the training for real images. The 6D poses of objects are calculated using Perspective-n-Point (PnP) algorithm based on the predicted keypoints. Experiments show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches without manual poses labels and competes with approaches using manual poses labels. | 2021 | Non-contact Pain Recognition from Video Sequences with Remote Physiological Measurements PredictionabstractAutomatic pain recognition is paramount for medical diagnosis and treatment. The existing works fall into three categories: assessing facial appearance changes, exploiting physiological cues, or fusing them in a multi-modal manner. However, (1) appearance changes are easily affected by subjective factors which impedes objective pain recognition. Besides, the appearance-based approaches ignore long-range spatial-temporal dependencies that are important for modeling expressions over time; (2) the physiological cues are obtained by attaching sensors on human body, which is inconvenient and uncomfortable. In this paper, we present a novel multi-task learning framework which encodes both appearance changes and physiological cues in a non-contact manner for pain recognition. The framework is able to capture both local and long-range dependencies via the proposed attention mechanism for the learned appearance representations, which are further enriched by temporally attended physiological cues (remote photoplethysmography, rPPG) that are recovered from videos in the auxiliary task. This framework is dubbed rPPG-enriched Spatio-Temporal Attention Network (rSTAN) and allows us to establish the state-of-the-art performance of non-contact pain recognition on publicly available pain databases. It demonstrates that rPPG predictions can be used as an auxiliary task to facilitate non-contact automatic pain recognition. | 2021 | Multi-Agent Cooperative Bidding Games for Multi-Objective Optimization in e-Commercial Sponsored SearchabstractBid optimization for online advertising from single advertiser's perspective has been thoroughly investigated in both academic research and industrial practice. However, existing work typically assume competitors do not change their bids, i.e., the wining price is fixed, leading to poor performance of the derived solution. Although a few studies use multi-agent reinforcement learning to set up a cooperative game, they still suffer the following drawbacks: (1) They fail to avoid collusion solutions where all the advertisers involved in an auction collude to bid an extremely low price on purpose. (2) Previous works cannot well handle the underlying complex bidding environment, leading to poor model convergence. This problem could be amplified when handling multiple objectives of advertisers which are practical demands but not considered by previous work. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-objective cooperative bid optimization formulation called Multi-Agent Cooperative bidding Games (MACG). MACG sets up a carefully designed multi-objective optimization framework where different objectives of advertisers are incorporated. A global objective to maximize the overall profit of all advertisements is added in order to encourage better cooperation and also to protect self-bidding advertisers. To avoid collusion, we also introduce an extra platform revenue constraint. We analyze the optimal functional form of the bidding formula theoretically and design a policy network accordingly to generate auction-level bids. Then we design an efficient multi-agent evolutionary strategy for model optimization. Evolutionary strategy does not need to model the underlying environment explicitly and is more suitable for bid optimization. Offline experiments and online A/B tests conducted on the Taobao platform indicate both single advertiser's objective and global profit have been significantly improved compared to state-of-art methods. | 2021 | Enhanced three-dimensional U-Net with graph-based refining for segmentation of gastrointestinal stromal tumoursabstractAbstract The gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) is a common mesenchymal tumour that lacks specificity of clinical manifestations. Therefore, preoperative accurate localization and accurate prediction of tumour risk are of important clinical value. At present, the diagnosis of GIST relies mainly on manual annotation of CT by professional doctors, which is inefficient and affected by subjective factors. A GIST segmentation algorithm is proposed based on a convolutional neural network to fuse multi‐scale features. The algorithm is applied to GIST segmentation with an improved 3‐D U‐Net method. Skip connections are introduced between encoders and decoders at different layers to account for the obvious differences in tumour size between different cases, which increases the path of information transmission in the network and solves the problem that U‐Net is too weak to simultaneously extract the features of different scales. In addition, due to the difficulty of tumour labelling and the correlation between small intestine segmentation and GIST segmentation, the model of small intestine segmentation is transferred to the model of GIST segmentation. Experiments show that the proposed method achieves better performance than that of the traditional U‐Net. Finally, the graph neural network is introduced to reduce the repetitive work of doctors in refining the segmentation results. Wanqing Zhao, Fei Xie 0007, Ziyu Guan, Wei Zhao 0019

Hierarchical bilinear convolutional neural network for image classificationabstractAbstract Image classification is one of the mainstream tasks of computer vision. However, the most existing methods use labels of the same granularity level for training. This leads to ignoring the hierarchy that may help to differentiate different visual objects better. Embedding hierarchical information into the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can effectively regulate the semantic space and thus reduce the ambiguity of prediction. To this end, a multi‐task learning framework, named as Hierarchical Bilinear Convolutional Neural Network (HB‐CNN), is developed by seamlessly integrating CNNs with multi‐task learning over the hierarchical visual concept structures. Specifically, the labels with a tree structure are used as the supervision to hierarchically train multiple branch networks. In this way, the model can not only learn additional information (e.g. context information) as the coarse‐level category features, but also focus the learned fine‐level category features on the object properties. To smoothly pass hierarchical conceptual information and encourage feature reuse, a connectivity pattern is proposed to connect features at different levels. Furthermore, a bilinear module is embedded to generalise various orderless texture feature descriptors so that our model can capture more discriminative features. The proposed method is extensively evaluated on the CIFAR‐10, CIFAR‐100, and ‘Orchid’ Plant image sets. The experimental results show the effectiveness and superiority of our method. | 2021 | Recommendation by Users' Multimodal Preferences for Smart City ApplicationsabstractAs an essential role in smart city applications, personalized recommender systems help users to find their potentially interested items from their historically generated data. Recently, researchers have started to utilize the massive user-generated multimodal contents to improve recommendation performance. However, previous methods have at least one of the following drawbacks: 1) employing shallow models, which cannot well capture high-level conceptual information; 2) failing to capture personalized user visual preference. In this article, we present a deep users’ multimodal preferences-based recommendation (UMPR) method to capture the textual and visual matching of users and items for recommendation. We extract textual matching from historical reviews. We construct users’ visual preference embeddings to model users’ visual preference and match them with items’ visual embeddings to obtain the visual matching. We apply UMPR on two applications related to smart city: restaurant recommendation and product recommendation. Experiments show that UMPR outperforms competitive baseline methods. | 2021 | Deep Multiple Instance Hashing for Fast Multi-Object Image SearchabstractMulti-keyword query is widely supported in text search engines. However, an analogue in image retrieval systems, multi-object query, is rarely studied. Meanwhile, traditional object-based image retrieval methods often involve multiple steps separately. In this work, we propose a weakly-supervised Deep Multiple Instance Hashing (DMIH) approach for multi-object image retrieval. Our DMIH approach, which leverages a popular CNN model to build the end-to-end relation between a raw image and the binary hash codes of its multiple objects, can support multi-object queries effectively and integrate object detection with hashing learning seamlessly. We treat object detection as a binary multiple instance learning (MIL) problem and such instances are automatically extracted from multi-scale convolutional feature maps. We also design a conditional random field (CRF) module to capture both the semantic and spatial relations among different class labels. For hashing training, we sample image pairs to learn their semantic relationships in terms of hash codes of the most probable proposals for owned labels as guided by object predictors. The two objectives benefit each other in a multi-task learning scheme. Finally, a two-level inverted index method is proposed to further speed up the retrieval of multi-object queries. Our DMIH approach outperforms state-of-the-arts on public benchmarks for object-based image retrieval and achieves promising results for multi-object queries. | 2021 | Multiview Concept Learning Via Deep Matrix FactorizationabstractMultiview representation learning (MVRL) leverages information from multiple views to obtain a common representation summarizing the consistency and complementarity in multiview data. Most previous matrix factorization-based MVRL methods are shallow models that neglect the complex hierarchical information. The recently proposed deep multiview factorization models cannot explicitly capture consistency and complementarity in multiview data. We present the deep multiview concept learning (DMCL) method, which hierarchically factorizes the multiview data, and tries to explicitly model consistent and complementary information and capture semantic structures at the highest abstraction level. We explore two variants of the DMCL framework, DMCL-L and DMCL-N, with respectively linear/nonlinear transformations between adjacent layers. We propose two block coordinate descent-based optimization methods for DMCL-L and DMCL-N. We verify the effectiveness of DMCL on three real-world data sets for both clustering and classification tasks. Wei Zhao 0019, Ziyu Guan, Ying Liu 0052

Question-Driven Purchasing Propensity Analysis for RecommendationabstractMerchants of e-commerce Websites expect recommender systems to entice more consumption which is highly correlated with the customers' purchasing propensity. However, most existing recommender systems focus on customers' general preference rather than purchasing propensity often governed by instant demands which we deem to be well conveyed by the questions asked by customers. A typical recommendation scenario is: Bob wants to buy a cell phone which can play the game PUBG. He is interested in HUAWEI P20 and asks “can PUBG run smoothly on this phone?” under it. Then our system will be triggered to recommend the most eligible cell phones to him. Intuitively, diverse user questions could probably be addressed in reviews written by other users who have similar concerns. To address this recommendation problem, we propose a novel Question-Driven Attentive Neural Network (QDANN) to assess the instant demands of questioners and the eligibility of products based on user generated reviews, and do recommendation accordingly. Without supervision, QDANN can well exploit reviews to achieve this goal. The attention mechanisms can be used to provide explanations for recommendations. We evaluate QDANN in three domains of Taobao. The results show the efficacy of our method and its superiority over baseline methods. | 2020 | Learning Deep Network for Detecting 3D Object Keypoints and 6D PosesabstractThe state-of-art 6D object pose detection methods use convolutional neural networks to estimate objects' 6D poses from RGB images. However, they require huge numbers of images with explicit 3D annotations such as 6D poses, 3D bounding boxes and 3D keypoints, either obtained by manual labeling or inferred from synthetic images generated by 3D CAD models. Manual labeling for a large number of images is a laborious task, and we usually do not have the corresponding 3D CAD models of objects in real environment. In this paper, we develop a keypoint-based 6D object pose detection method (and its deep network) called Object Keypoint based POSe Estimation (OK-POSE). OK-POSE employs relative transformation between viewpoints for training. Specifically, we use pairs of images with object annotation and relative transformation information between their viewpoints to automatically discover objects' 3D keypoints which are geometrically and visually consistent. Then, the 6D object pose can be estimated using a keypoint-based geometric reasoning method with a reference viewpoint. The relative transformation information can be easily obtained from any cheap binocular cameras or most smartphone devices, thus greatly lowering the labeling cost. Experiments have demonstrated that OK-POSE achieves acceptable performance compared to methods relying on the object's 3D CAD model or a great deal of 3D labeling. These results show that our method can be used as a suitable alternative when there are no 3D CAD models or a large number of 3D annotations. | 2020 | Query-Biased Self-Attentive Network for Query-Focused Video SummarizationabstractThis paper addresses the task of query-focused video summarization, which takes user queries and long videos as inputs and generates query-focused video summaries. Compared to video summarization, which mainly concentrates on finding the most diverse and representative visual contents as a summary, the task of query-focused video summarization considers the user's intent and the semantic meaning of generated summary. In this paper, we propose a method, named query-biased self-attentive network (QSAN) to tackle this challenge. Our key idea is to utilize the semantic information from video descriptions to generate a generic summary and then to combine the information from the query to generate a query-focused summary. Specifically, we first propose a hierarchical self-attentive network to model the relative relationship at three levels, which are different frames from a segment, different segments of the same video, textual information of video description and its related visual contents. We train the model on video caption dataset and employ a reinforced caption generator to generate a video description, which can help us locate important frames or shots. Then we build a query-aware scoring module to compute the query-relevant score for each shot and generate the query-focused summary. Extensive experiments on the benchmark dataset demonstrate the competitive performance of our approach compared to some methods. | 2020 | An Efficient Destination Prediction Approach Based on Future Trajectory Prediction and Transition Matrix OptimizationabstractDestination prediction is an essential task in various mobile applications and up to now many methods have been proposed. However, existing methods usually suffer from the problems of heavy computational burden, data sparsity, and low coverage. Therefore, a novel approach named DestPD is proposed to tackle the aforementioned problems. Differing from an earlier approach that only considers the starting and current location of a partial trip, DestPD first determines the most likely future location and then predicts the destination. It comprises two phases, the offline training and the online prediction. During the offline training, transition probabilities between two locations are obtained via Markov transition matrix multiplication. In order to improve the efficiency of matrix multiplication, we propose two data constructs, Efficient Transition Probability (ETP) and Transition Probabilities with Detours (TPD). They are capable of pinpointing the minimum amount of needed computation. During the online prediction, we design Obligatory Update Point (OUP) and Transition Affected Area (TAA) to accelerate the frequent update of ETP and TPD for recomputing the transition probabilities. Moreover, a new future trajectory prediction approach is devised. It captures the most recent movement based on a query trajectory. It consists of two components: similarity finding through Best Path Notation (BPN) and best node selection. Our novel BPN similarity finding scheme keeps track of the nodes that induces inefficiency and then finds similarity fast based on these nodes. It is particularly suitable for trajectories with overlapping segments. Finally, the destination is predicted by combining transition probabilities and the most probable future location through Bayesian reasoning. The DestPD method is proved to achieve one order of cut in both time and space complexity. Furthermore, the experimental results on real-world and synthetic datasets have shown that DestPD consistently surpasses the state-of-the-art methods in terms of both efficiency (approximately over 100 times faster) and accuracy. | 2020 | Discerning Influence Patterns with Beta-Poisson Factorization in Microblogging EnvironmentsabstractSocial influence analysis in microblogging services has attracted much attention in recent years. However, most previous studies were focused on measuring users' (topical) influence. Little effort has been made to discern and quantify how a user is influenced. Specifically, the fact that user i retweets a tweet from author j could be either because i is influenced by j (i.e., j is a topical authority), or simply because he is “influenced” by the content (interested in the content). To mine such influence patterns, we propose a novel Bayesian factorization model, dubbed Influence Beta-Poisson Factorization (IBPF). IBPF jointly factorizes the retweet data and tweet content to quantify latent topical factors of user preference, author influence and content influence. It generates every retweet record according to the sum of two causing terms: one representing author influence, and the other one derived from content influence. To control the impact of the two terms, for each user IBPF generates a probability for each latent topic by Beta distribution, indicating how strongly the user cares about the topical authority of the author. We develop an efficient variational inference algorithm for IBPF. We demonstrate the efficacy of IBPF on two public microblogging datasets. | 2020 | Addressing the Item Cold-Start Problem by Attribute-Driven Active LearningabstractIn recommender systems, cold-start issues are situations where no previous events, e.g., ratings, are known for certain users or items. In this paper, we focus on the item cold-start problem. Both content information (e.g., item attributes) and initial user ratings are valuable for seizing users' preferences on a new item. However, previous methods for the item cold-start problem either (1) incorporate content information into collaborative filtering to perform hybrid recommendation, or (2) actively select users to rate the new item without considering content information and then do collaborative filtering. In this paper, we propose a novel recommendation scheme for the item cold-start problem by leveraging both active learning and items' attribute information. Specifically, we design useful user selection criteria based on items' attributes and users' rating history, and combine the criteria in an optimization framework for selecting users. By exploiting the feedback ratings, users' previous ratings and items' attributes, we then generate accurate rating predictions for the other unselected users. | 2019 | IntentGC: A Scalable Graph Convolution Framework Fusing Heterogeneous Information for RecommendationabstractThe remarkable progress of network embedding has led to state-of-the-art algorithms in recommendation. However, the sparsity of user-item interactions (i.e., explicit preferences) on websites remains a big challenge for predicting users' behaviors. Although research efforts have been made in utilizing some auxiliary information (e.g., social relations between users) to solve the problem, the existing rich heterogeneous auxiliary relationships are still not fully exploited. Moreover, previous works relied on linearly combined regularizers and suffered parameter tuning. In this work, we collect abundant relationships from common user behaviors and item information, and propose a novel framework named IntentGC to leverage both explicit preferences and heterogeneous relationships by graph convolutional networks. In addition to the capability of modeling heterogeneity, IntentGC can learn the importance of different relationships automatically by the neural model in a nonlinear sense. | 2019 | Exact-K Recommendation via Maximal Clique OptimizationabstractThis paper targets to a novel but practical recommendation problem named exact-K recommendation. It is different from traditional top-K recommendation, as it focuses more on (constrained) combinatorial optimization which will optimize to recommend a whole set of K items called card, rather than ranking optimization which assumes that "better" items should be put into top positions. Thus we take the first step to give a formal problem definition, and innovatively reduce it to Maximum Clique Optimization based on graph. To tackle this specific combinatorial optimization problem which is NP-hard, we propose Graph Attention Networks (GAttN) with a Multi-head Self-attention encoder and a decoder with attention mechanism. It can end-to-end learn the joint distribution of the K items and generate an optimal card rather than rank individual items by prediction scores. Then we propose Reinforcement Learning from Demonstrations (RLfD) which combines the advantages in behavior cloning and reinforcement learning, making it sufficient-and-efficient to train the model. Extensive experiments on three datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed GAttN with RLfD method, it outperforms several strong baselines with a relative improvement of 7.7% and 4.7% on average in Precision and Hit Ratio respectively, and achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance for the exact-K recommendation problem. | 2019 | Riker: Mining Rich Keyword Representations for Interpretable Product Question AnsweringabstractThis work studies product question answering (PQA) which aims to answer product-related questions based on customer reviews. Most recent PQA approaches adopt end2end semantic matching methodologies, which map questions and answers to a latent vector space to measure their relevance. Such methods often achieve superior performance but it tends to be difficult to interpret why. On the other hand, simple keyword-based search methods exhibit natural interpretability through matched keywords, but often suffer from the lexical gap problem. In this work, we develop a new PQA framework (named Riker) that enjoys the benefits of both interpretability and effectiveness. Riker mines rich keyword representations of a question with two major components, internal word re-weighting and external word association, which predict the importance of each question word and associate the question with outside relevant keywords respectively, and can be jointly trained under weak supervision with large-scale QA pairs. The keyword representations from Riker can be directly used as input to a keyword-based search module, enabling the whole process to be effective while preserving good interpretability. We conduct extensive experiments using Amazon QA and review datasets from 5 different departments, and our results show that Riker substantially outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods in both synthetic settings and real user evaluations. In addition, we compare keyword representations from Riker and those from attention mechanisms popularly used for deep neural networks through case studies, showing that the former are more effective and interpretable. | 2019 | Personalized Attraction Enhanced Sponsored Search with Multi-task LearningabstractWe study a novel problem of sponsored search (SS) for E-Commerce platforms: how we can attract query users to click product advertisements (ads) by presenting them features of products that attract them. This not only benefits merchants and the platform, but also improves user experience. The problem is challenging due to the following reasons: (1) We need to carefully manipulate the ad content without affecting user search experience. (2) It is difficult to obtain users' explicit feedback of their preference in product features. (3) Nowadays, a great portion of the search traffic in E-Commerce platforms is from their mobile apps (e.g., nearly 90% in Taobao). The situation would get worse in the mobile setting due to limited space. We are focused on the mobile setting and propose to manipulate ad titles by adding a few selling point keywords (SPs) to attract query users. We model it as a personalized attractive SP prediction problem and carry out both large-scale offline evaluation and online A/B tests in Taobao. The contributions include: (1) We explore various exhibition schemes of SPs. (2) We propose a surrogate of user explicit feedback for SP preference. (3) We also explore multi-task learning and various additional features to boost the performance. A variant of our best model has already been deployed in Taobao, leading to a 2% increase in revenue per thousand impressions and an opt-out rate of merchants less than 4%. | 2018 | Substructure Assembling Network for Graph ClassificationabstractGraphs are natural data structures adopted to represent real-world data of complex relationships. In recent years, a surge of interest has been received to build predictive models over graphs, with prominent examples in chemistry, computational biology, and social networks. The overwhelming complexity of graph space often makes it challenging to extract interpretable and discriminative structural features for classification tasks. In this work, we propose a novel neural network structure called Substructure Assembling Network (SAN) to extract graph features and improve the generalization performance of graph classification. The key innovation of our work is a unified substructure assembling unit, which is a variant of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) designed to hierarchically assemble useful pieces of graph components so as to fabricate discriminative substructures. SAN adopts a sequential, probabilistic decision process, and therefore it can tune substructure features in a finer granularity. Meanwhile, the parameterized soft decisions can be continuously improved with supervised learning through back-propagation, leading to optimizable search trajectories. Overall, SAN embraces both the flexibility of combinatorial pattern search and the strong optimizability of deep learning, and delivers promising results as well as interpretable structural features in graph classification against state-of-the-art techniques. | 2018 | Device-Aware Rule Recommendation for the Internet of ThingsabstractWith over 34 billion IoT devices to be installed by 2020, the Internet of Things (IoT) is fundamentally changing our lives. One of the greatest benefits of the IoT is the powerful automations achieved by applying rules to IoT devices. For instance, a rule named "Make me a cup of coffee when I wake up'' automatically turns on the coffee machine when the sensor in the bedroom detects motion in the morning. With large numbers of possible rules out there, a recommendation system is of great necessity to help users find rules they need. However, little effort has been made to design a model tailored for the IoT rule recommendation, which comes with lots of new challenges compared with traditional recommendation tasks. We not only need to re-define "users'' and "items'' in the recommendation task, but also have to consider a new type of entities, devices, and the extra information and constraints brought by them. To handle these challenges, we propose a novel efficient recommendation algorithm, which not only considers the implicit feedback of users on rules, but also takes user-rule-device interactions and the match between rule device requirements and user device possessions into account. In collaboration with Samsung, one of the leading companies in this field, we have designed an IoT rule recommendation framework and evaluated our algorithm on a real-life industry dataset. Experiments show the effectiveness and efficiency of our method. Beidou Wang, Xin Guo 0006, Martin Ester, Ziyu Guan, Bandeep Singh, Yu Zhu 0007, Jiajun Bu, Deng Cai 0001

Tag-based Weakly-supervised Hashing for Image RetrievalabstractWe are concerned with using user-tagged images to learn proper hashing functions for image retrieval. In the first stage, rather than performing supervision on tags, the framework introduces a semantic embedding vector (sem-vector) for each image and performs learning of hashing and sem-vectors jointly. By carefully designing the optimization problem, it can well leverage tagging information and image content for hashing learning. The framework is general and does not depend on specific deep hashing methods. Empirical results on real world datasets show that when it is integrated with state-of-art deep hashing methods, the performance increases by 8-10%. | 2018 | Deep Multi-View Concept LearningabstractMulti-view data is common in real-world datasets, where different views describe distinct perspectives. To better summarize the consistent and complementary information in multi-view data, researchers have proposed various multi-view representation learning algorithms, typically based on factorization models. However, most previous methods were focused on shallow factorization models which cannot capture the complex hierarchical information. Although a deep multi-view factorization model has been proposed recently, it fails to explicitly discern consistent and complementary information in multi-view data and does not consider conceptual labels. In this work we present a semi-supervised deep multi-view factorization method, named Deep Multi-view Concept Learning (DMCL). DMCL performs nonnegative factorization of the data hierarchically, and tries to capture semantic structures and explicitly model consistent and complementary information in multi-view data at the highest abstraction level. We develop a block coordinate descent algorithm for DMCL. Experiments conducted on image and document datasets show that DMCL performs well and outperforms baseline methods. | 2018 | Evaluating Brush Movements for Chinese Calligraphy: A Computer Vision Based ApproachabstractChinese calligraphy is a popular, highly esteemed art form in the Chinese cultural sphere and worldwide. Ink brushes are the traditional writing tool for Chinese calligraphy and the subtle nuances of brush movements have a great impact on the aesthetics of the written characters. However, mastering the brush movement is a challenging task for many calligraphy learners as it requires many years’ practice and expert supervision. This paper presents a novel approach to help Chinese calligraphy learners to quantify the quality of brush movements without expert involvement. Our approach extracts the brush trajectories from a video stream; it then compares them with example templates of reputed calligraphers to produce a score for the writing quality. We achieve this by first developing a novel neural network to extract the spatial and temporal movement features from the video stream. We then employ methods developed in the computer vision and signal processing domains to track the brush movement trajectory and calculate the score. We conducted extensive experiments and user studies to evaluate our approach. Experimental results show that our approach is highly accurate in identifying brush movements, yielding an average accuracy of 90%, and the generated score is within 3% of errors when compared to the one given by human experts. | 2018 | A Brand-level Ranking System with the Customized Attention-GRU ModelabstractIn e-commerce websites like Taobao, brand is playing a more important role in influencing users' decision of click/purchase, partly because users are now attaching more importance to the quality of products and brand is an indicator of quality. However, existing ranking systems are not specifically designed to satisfy this kind of demand. Some design tricks may partially alleviate this problem, but still cannot provide satisfactory results or may create additional interaction cost. In this paper, we design the first brand-level ranking system to address this problem. The key challenge of this system is how to sufficiently exploit users' rich behavior in e-commerce websites to rank the brands. In our solution, we firstly conduct the feature engineering specifically tailored for the personalized brand ranking problem and then rank the brands by an adapted Attention-GRU model containing three important modifications. Note that our proposed modifications can also apply to many other machine learning models on various tasks. We conduct a series of experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed ranking model and test the response to the brand-level ranking system from real users on a large-scale e-commerce platform, i.e. Taobao. | 2018 | Deep Reinforcement Learning for Sponsored Search Real-time BiddingabstractBidding optimization is one of the most critical problems in online advertising. Sponsored search (SS) auction, due to the randomness of user query behavior and platform nature, usually adopts keyword-level bidding strategies. In contrast, the display advertising (DA), as a relatively simpler scenario for auction, has taken advantage of real-time bidding (RTB) to boost the performance for advertisers. In this paper, we consider the RTB problem in sponsored search auction, named SS-RTB. SS-RTB has a much more complex dynamic environment, due to stochastic user query behavior and more complex bidding policies based on multiple keywords of an ad. Most previous methods for DA cannot be applied. We propose a reinforcement learning (RL) solution for handling the complex dynamic environment. Although some RL methods have been proposed for online advertising, they all fail to address the "environment changing'' problem: the state transition probabilities vary between two days. Motivated by the observation that auction sequences of two days share similar transition patterns at a proper aggregation level, we formulate a robust MDP model at hour-aggregation level of the auction data and propose a control-by-model framework for SS-RTB. Rather than generating bid prices directly, we decide a bidding model for impressions of each hour and perform real-time bidding accordingly. We also extend the method to handle the multi-agent problem. We deployed the SS-RTB system in the e-commerce search auction platform of Alibaba. Empirical experiments of offline evaluation and online A/B test demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Jun Zhao 0009, Guang Qiu, Ziyu Guan, Wei Zhao 0019, Xiaofei He 0001

Weakly-Supervised Deep Embedding for Product Review Sentiment AnalysisabstractProduct reviews are valuable for upcoming buyers in helping them make decisions. To this end, different opinion mining techniques have been proposed, where judging a review sentence's orientation (e.g., positive or negative) is one of their key challenges. Recently, deep learning has emerged as an effective means for solving sentiment classification problems. A neural network intrinsically learns a useful representation automatically without human efforts. However, the success of deep learning highly relies on the availability of large-scale training data. We propose a novel deep learning framework for product review sentiment classification which employs prevalently available ratings as weak supervision signals. The framework consists of two steps: (1) learning a high level representation (an embedding space) which captures the general sentiment distribution of sentences through rating information; and (2) adding a classification layer on top of the embedding layer and use labeled sentences for supervised fine-tuning. We explore two kinds of low level network structure for modeling review sentences, namely, convolutional feature extractors and long short-term memory. To evaluate the proposed framework, we construct a dataset containing 1.1M weakly labeled review sentences and 11,754 labeled review sentences from Amazon. Experimental results show the efficacy of the proposed framework and its superiority over baselines. | 2018 | Learning to Map Social Network Users by Unified Manifold Alignment on HypergraphabstractNowadays, a lot of people possess accounts on multiple online social networks, e.g., Facebook and Twitter. These networks are overlapped, but the correspondences between their users are not explicitly given. Mapping common users across these social networks will be beneficial for applications such as cross-network recommendation. In recent years, a lot of mapping algorithms have been proposed which exploited social and/or profile relations between users from different networks. However, there is still a lack of unified mapping framework which can well exploit high-order relational information in both social structures and profiles. In this paper, we propose a unified hypergraph learning framework named unified manifold alignment on hypergraph (UMAH) for this task. UMAH models social structures and user profile relations in a unified hypergraph where the relative weights of profile hyperedges are determined automatically. Given a set of training user correspondences, a common subspace is learned by preserving the hypergraph structure as well as the correspondence relations of labeled users. UMAH intrinsically performs semisupervised manifold alignment with profile information for calibration. For a target user in one network, UMAH ranks all the users in the other network by their probabilities of being the corresponding user (measured by similarity in the subspace). In experiments, we evaluate UMAH on three real world data sets and compare it to state-of-art baseline methods. Experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of UMAH in mapping users across networks. | 2017 | Deep Multiple Instance Hashing for Object-based Image RetrievalabstractMulti-keyword query is widely supported in text search engines. However, an analogue in image retrieval systems, multi-object query, is rarely studied. Meanwhile, traditional object-based image retrieval methods often involve multiple steps separately and need expensive location labeling for detecting objects. In this work, we propose a weakly-supervised Deep Multiple Instance Hashing (DMIH) framework for object-based image retrieval. DMIH integrates object detection and hashing learning on the basis of a popular CNN model to build the end-to-end relation between a raw image and the binary hashing codes of multiple objects in it. Specifically, we cast the object detection of each object class as a binary multiple instance learning problem where instances are object proposals extracted from multi-scale convolutional feature maps. For hashing training, we sample image pairs to learn their semantic relationships in terms of hash codes of the most probable proposals for owned labels as guided by object predictors. The two objectives benefit each other in learning. DMIH outperforms state-of-the-arts on public benchmarks for object-based image retrieval and achieves promising results for multi-object queries. | 2017 | What to Do Next: Modeling User Behaviors by Time-LSTMabstractRecently, Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) solutions for recommender systems (RS) are becoming increasingly popular. The insight is that, there exist some intrinsic patterns in the sequence of users' actions, and RNN has been proved to perform excellently when modeling sequential data. In traditional tasks such as language modeling, RNN solutions usually only consider the sequential order of objects without the notion of interval. However, in RS, time intervals between users' actions are of significant importance in capturing the relations of users' actions and the traditional RNN architectures are not good at modeling them. In this paper, we propose a new LSTM variant, i.e. Time-LSTM, to model users' sequential actions. Time-LSTM equips LSTM with time gates to model time intervals. These time gates are specifically designed, so that compared to the traditional RNN solutions, Time-LSTM better captures both of users' short-term and long-term interests, so as to improve the recommendation performance. Experimental results on two real-world datasets show the superiority of the recommendation method using Time-LSTM over the traditional methods. | 2016 | The Million Domain Challenge: Broadcast Email Prioritization by Cross-domain RecommendationabstractWith email overload becoming a billion-level drag on the economy, personalized email prioritization is of urgent need to help predict the importance level of an email. Despite lots of previous effort on the topic, broadcast email, an important type of emails with its unique challenges and intriguing opportunities, has been overlooked. The most salient opportunity lies in that effective collaborative filtering can be exploited due to thousands of receivers of a typical broadcast email. However, every broadcast email is completely cold and it is very costly to obtain users' preference feedback. Fortunately, there exist up to million-level broadcast mailing lists in a real life email system. Similar mailing lists can provide useful extra information for broadcast email prioritization in a target mailing list. How to mine such useful extra information is a challenging problem that has never been touched. In this work, we propose the first broadcast email prioritization framework considering large numbers of mailing lists by formulating this problem as a cross domain recommendation problem. An optimization framework is proposed to select the optimal set of source domains considering multiple criteria including overlap of users, feedback pattern similarity and coverage of users. | 2016 | Which to View: Personalized Prioritization for Broadcast EmailsabstractEmail is one of the most important communication tools today, but email overload resulting from the large number of unimportant or irrelevant emails is causing trillion-level economy loss every year. Thus personalized email prioritization algorithms are of urgent need. Despite lots of previous effort on this topic, broadcast email, an important type of email, is overlooked in previous literature. Broadcast emails are significantly different from normal emails, introducing both new challenges and opportunities. On one hand, lack of real senders and limited user interactions invalidate the key features exploited by traditional email prioritization algorithms; on the other hand, thousands of receivers for one broadcast email bring us the opportunity to predict importance through collaborative filtering. However, broadcast emails face a severe cold-start problem which hinders the direct application of collaborative filtering. In this paper, we propose the first framework for broadcast email prioritization by designing a novel active learning model that considers the collaborative filtering, implicit feedback and time sensitive responsiveness features of broadcast emails. Our method is thoroughly evaluated on a large scale real world industrial dataset from Samsung Electronics. | 2015 | Fine-Grained Knowledge Sharing in Collaborative EnvironmentsabstractIn collaborative environments, members may try to acquire similar information on the web in order to gain knowledge in one domain. For example, in a company several departments may successively need to buy business intelligence software and employees from these departments may have studied online about different business intelligence tools and their features independently. It will be productive to get them connected and share learned knowledge. We investigate fine-grained knowledge sharing in collaborative environments. We propose to analyze members' web surfing data to summarize the fine-grained knowledge acquired by them. A two-step framework is proposed for mining fine-grained knowledge: (1) web surfing data is clustered into tasks by a nonparametric generative model; (2) a novel discriminative infinite Hidden Markov Model is developed to mine fine-grained aspects in each task. Finally, the classic expert search method is applied to the mined results to find proper members for knowledge sharing. Experiments on web surfing data collected from our lab at UCSB and IBM show that the fine-grained aspect mining framework works as expected and outperforms baselines. When it is integrated with expert search, the search accuracy improves significantly, in comparison with applying the classic expert search method directly on web surfing data. | 2015 | Multi-View Concept Learning for Data RepresentationabstractReal-world datasets often involve multiple views of data items, e.g., a Web page can be described by both its content and anchor texts of hyperlinks leading to it; photos in Flickr could be characterized by visual features, as well as user contributed tags. Different views provide information complementary to each other. Synthesizing multi-view features can lead to a comprehensive description of the data items, which could benefit many data analytic applications. Unfortunately, the simple idea of concatenating different feature vectors ignores statistical properties of each view and usually incurs the “curse of dimensionality” problem. We propose Multi-view Concept Learning (MCL), a novel nonnegative latent representation learning algorithm for capturing conceptual factors from multi-view data. MCL exploits both multi-view information and label information. The key idea is to learn a common latent space across different views which (1) captures the semantic relationships between data items through graph embedding regularization on labeled items, and (2) allows each latent factor to be associated with a subset of views via sparseness constraints. In this way, MCL could capture flexible conceptual patterns hidden in multi-view features. Experiments on a toy problem and three real-world datasets show that MCL performs well and outperforms baseline methods. Ziyu Guan, Lijun Zhang 0005, Jinye Peng 0001, Jianping Fan 0001

Mapping Users across Networks by Manifold Alignment on HypergraphabstractNowadays many people are members of multiple online social networks simultaneously, such as Facebook, Twitter and some other instant messaging circles. But these networks are usually isolated from each other. Mapping common users across these social networks will benefit many applications. Methods based on username comparison perform well on parts of users, however they can not work in the following situations: (a) users choose different usernames in different networks; (b) a unique username corresponds to different individuals. In this paper, we propose to utilize social structures to improve the mapping performance. Specifically, a novel subspace learning algorithm, Manifold Alignment on Hypergraph (MAH), is proposed. Different from traditional semi-supervised manifold alignment methods, we use hypergraph to model high-order relations here. For a target user in one network, the proposed algorithm ranks all users in the other network by their possibilities of being the corresponding user. Moreover, methods based on username comparison can be incorporated into our algorithm easily to further boost the mapping accuracy. | 2014 | Interpreting the Public Sentiment Variations on TwitterabstractMillions of users share their opinions on Twitter, making it a valuable platform for tracking and analyzing public sentiment. Such tracking and analysis can provide critical information for decision making in various domains. Therefore it has attracted attention in both academia and industry. Previous research mainly focused on modeling and tracking public sentiment. In this work, we move one step further to interpret sentiment variations. We observed that emerging topics (named foreground topics) within the sentiment variation periods are highly related to the genuine reasons behind the variations. Based on this observation, we propose a Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) based model, Foreground and Background LDA (FB-LDA), to distill foreground topics and filter out longstanding background topics. These foreground topics can give potential interpretations of the sentiment variations. To further enhance the readability of the mined reasons, we select the most representative tweets for foreground topics and develop another generative model called Reason Candidate and Background LDA (RCB-LDA) to rank them with respect to their “popularity” within the variation period. Experimental results show that our methods can effectively find foreground topics and rank reason candidates. The proposed models can also be applied to other tasks such as finding topic differences between two sets of documents. | 2013 | gIceberg: Towards iceberg analysis in large graphsabstractTraditional multi-dimensional data analysis techniques such as iceberg cube cannot be directly applied to graphs for finding interesting or anomalous vertices due to the lack of dimensionality in graphs. In this paper, we introduce the concept of graph icebergs that refer to vertices for which the concentration (aggregation) of an attribute in their vicinities is abnormally high. Intuitively, these vertices shall be “close” to the attribute of interest in the graph space. Based on this intuition, we propose a novel framework, called gIceberg, which performs aggregation using random walks, rather than traditional SUM and AVG aggregate functions. This proposed framework scores vertices by their different levels of interestingness and finds important vertices that meet a user-specified threshold. To improve scalability, two aggregation strategies, forward and backward aggregation, are proposed with corresponding optimization techniques and bounds. | 2013 | Co-Occurrence-Based Diffusion for Expert Search on the WebabstractExpert search has been studied in different contexts, e.g., enterprises, academic communities. We examine a general expert search problem: searching experts on the web, where millions of webpages and thousands of names are considered. It has mainly two challenging issues: 1) webpages could be of varying quality and full of noises; 2) The expertise evidences scattered in webpages are usually vague and ambiguous. We propose to leverage the large amount of co-occurrence information to assess relevance and reputation of a person name for a query topic. The co-occurrence structure is modeled using a hypergraph, on which a heat diffusion based ranking algorithm is proposed. Query keywords are regarded as heat sources, and a person name which has strong connection with the query (i.e., frequently co-occur with query keywords and co-occur with other names related to query keywords) will receive most of the heat, thus being ranked high. Experiments on the ClueWeb09 web collection show that our algorithm is effective for retrieving experts and outperforms baseline algorithms significantly. This work would be regarded as one step toward addressing the more general entity search problem without sophisticated NLP techniques. | 2013 | Static and Dynamic Structural Correlations in GraphsabstractReal-life graphs not only contain nodes and edges, but also have events taking place, e.g., product sales in social networks. Among different events, some exhibit strong correlations with the network structure, while others do not. Such structural correlations will shed light on viral influence existing in the corresponding network. Unfortunately, the traditional association mining concept is not applicable in graphs because it only works on homogeneous data sets like transactions and baskets. We propose a novel measure for assessing such structural correlations in heterogeneous graph data sets with events. The measure applies hitting time to aggregate the proximity among nodes that have the same event. To calculate the correlation scores for many events in a large network, we develop a scalable framework, called gScore, using sampling and approximation. By comparing to the situation where events are randomly distributed in the same network, our method is able to discover events that are highly correlated with the graph structure. We test gScore's effectiveness by synthetic events on the DBLP coauthor network and report interesting correlation results in a social network extracted from TaoBao.com, the largest online shopping network in China. Scalability of gScore is tested on the Twitter network. Since an event is essentially a temporal phenomenon, we also propose a dynamic measure, which reveals structural correlations at specific time steps and can be used for discovering detailed evolutionary patterns. | 2012 | Unified hypergraph for image ranking in a multimodal contextabstractImage ranking has long been studied, yet it remains a very challenging problem. Increasingly, online images come with additional metadata such as user annotations and geographic coordinates. They provide rich complementary information. We propose to combine such multimodal information through a unified hypergraph to improve image retrieval performance. Hypergraphs allow for the simultaneously capture of higher order relationships among images using different modalities, e.g. visual content, user tags, and geolocations. Each image is represented as a vertex in the hypergraph. Each hyperedge is formed by a vertex and it's k-nearest neighbors. Three types of hyperedges exist in our unified hypergraph, which are in correspondence to the three different modalities. Image ranking is then formulated as a ranking problem on a unified hypergraph. The proposed method can easily be extended to incorporate additional modalities as long as a similarity function exists to compare the features. Experimental results on large datasets are promising. | 2012 | Latent association analysis of document pairsabstractThis paper presents Latent Association Analysis (LAA), a generative model that analyzes the topics within two document sets simultaneously, as well as the correlations between the two topic structures, by considering the semantic associations among document pairs. LAA defines a correlation factor that represents the connection between two documents, and considers the topic proportion of paired documents based on this factor. Words in the documents are assumed to be randomly generated by particular topic assignments and topic-to-word probability distributions. The paper also presents a new ranking algorithm, based on LAA, that can be used to retrieve target documents that are potentially associated with a given source document. The ranking algorithm uses the latent factor in LAA to rank target documents by the strength of their semantic associations with the source document. We evaluate the LAA algorithm with real datasets, specifically, the IT-Change and the IT-Solution document sets from the IBM IT service environment and the Symptom-Treatment document sets from Google Health. | 2012 | Measuring Two-Event Structural Correlations on GraphsabstractReal-life graphs usually have various kinds of events happening on them, e.g., product purchases in online social networks and intrusion alerts in computer networks. The occurrences of events on the same graph could be correlated, exhibiting either attraction or repulsion. Such structural correlations can reveal important relationships between different events. Unfortunately, correlation relationships on graph structures are not well studied and cannot be captured by traditional measures. In this work, we design a novel measure for assessing two-event structural correlations on graphs. Given the occurrences of two events, we choose uniformly a sample of "reference nodes" from the vicinity of all event nodes and employ the Kendall's τ rank correlation measure to compute the average concordance of event density changes. Significance can be efficiently assessed by τ's nice property of being asymptotically normal under the null hypothesis. In order to compute the measure in large scale networks, we develop a scalable framework using different sampling strategies. The complexity of these strategies is analyzed. Experiments on real graph datasets with both synthetic and real events demonstrate that the proposed framework is not only efficacious, but also efficient and scalable. | 2011 | Assessing and ranking structural correlations in graphsabstractReal-life graphs not only have nodes and edges, but also have events taking place, e.g., product sales in social networks and virus infection in communication networks. Among different events, some exhibit strong correlation with the network structure, while others do not. Such structural correlation will shed light on viral influence existing in the corresponding network. Unfortunately, the traditional association mining concept is not applicable in graphs since it only works on homogeneous datasets like transactions and baskets. Ziyu Guan, Jian Wu 0001, Ambuj K. | 2011 | Neighborhood based fast graph search in large networksabstractComplex social and information network search becomes important with a variety of applications. In the core of these applications, lies a common and critical problem: Given a labeled network and a query graph, how to efficiently search the query graph in the target network. The presence of noise and the incomplete knowledge about the structure and content of the target network make it unrealistic to find an exact match. Rather, it is more appealing to find the top-k approximate matches. Arijit Khan 0001, Xifeng Yan, Ziyu Guan, Supriyo Chakraborty, Shu Tao

Learning a user-thread alignment manifold for thread recommendation in online forumabstractPeople are more and more willing to participate in online forums to share their knowledge and experience. However, it may not be easy for them to find their desired threads in online forums due to the information overload problem. Traditional recommendation approaches can not be directly applied to online forums due to two reasons. First, unlike traditional movie or music recommendation problem, there is no rating information in online forums. Second, the sparsity problem is more severe since the users may only read threads but take no actions. To address these limitations, in this paper we propose to make use of the reply relationships among users, as well as thread contents. A learning algorithm is introduced to infer a user-thread alignment manifold in which both users and thread contents can be well represented. Thus, the relatedness between users and threads can be measured on this alignment manifold, and the closest threads which can best meet the corresponding user's information needs are recommended. Experiments on a dataset crawled from digg.com have demonstrated the superiority of our algorithm over traditional recommendation algorithms. | 2010 | Document recommendation in social tagging servicesabstractSocial tagging services allow users to annotate various on-line resources with freely chosen keywords (tags). They not only facilitate the users in finding and organizing online re-sources, but also provide meaningful collaborative semantic data which can potentially be exploited by recommender systems. Traditional studies on recommender systems fo-cused on user rating data, while recently social tagging data is becoming more and more prevalent. How to perform re-source recommendation based on tagging data is an emerg-ing research topic. In this paper we consider the problem of document (e.g. Web pages, research papers) recommen-dation using purely tagging data. That is, we only have data containing users, tags, documents and the relation-ships among them. We propose a novel graph-based rep-resentation learning algorithm for this purpose. The users, tags and documents are represented in the same semantic space in which two related objects are close to each other. For a given user, we recommend those documents that are sufficiently close to him/her. Experimental results on two data sets crawled from Del.icio.us and CiteULike show that our algorithm can generate promising recommendations and outperforms traditional recommendation algorithms. | 2009 | Can we learn a template-independent wrapper for news article extraction from a single training site?abstractAutomatic news extraction from news pages is important in many Web applications such as news aggregation. However, the existing news extraction methods based on template-level wrapper induction have three serious limitations. First, the existing methods cannot correctly extract pages belonging to an unseen template. Second, it is costly to maintain up-to-date wrappers for a large amount of news websites, because any change of a template may invalidate the corresponding wrapper. Last, the existing methods can merely extract unformatted plain texts, and thus are not user friendly. In this paper, we tackle the problem of template-independent Web news extraction in a user-friendly way. We formalize Web news extraction as a machine learning problem and learn a template-independent wrapper using a very small number of labeled news pages from a single site. Novel features dedicated to news titles and bodies are developed. Correlations between news titles and news bodies are exploited. Our template-independent wrapper can extract news pages from different sites regardless of templates. Moreover, our approach can extract not only texts, but also images and animates within the news bodies and the extracted news articles are in the same visual style as in the original pages. In our experiments, a wrapper learned from 40 pages from a single news site achieved an accuracy of 98.1% on 3,973 news pages from 12 news sites. | 2009 | Personalized tag recommendation using graph-based ranking on multi-type interrelated objectsabstractSocial tagging is becoming increasingly popular in many Web 2.0 applications where users can annotate resources (e.g. Web pages) with arbitrary keywords (i.e. tags). A tag recommendation module can assist users in tagging process by suggesting relevant tags to them. It can also be directly used to expand the set of tags annotating a resource. The benefits are twofold: improving user experience and enriching the index of resources. However, the former one is not emphasized in previous studies, though a lot of work has reported that different users may describe the same concept in different ways. We address the problem of personalized tag recommendation for text documents. In particular, we model personalized tag recommendation as a "query and ranking" problem and propose a novel graph-based ranking algorithm for interrelated multi-type objects. When a user issues a tagging request, both the document and the user are treated as a part of the query. Tags are then ranked by our graph-based ranking algorithm which takes into consideration both relevance to the document and preference of the user. Finally, the top ranked tags are presented to the user as suggestions. Experiments on a large-scale tagging data set collected from Del.icio.us have demonstrated that our proposed algorithm significantly outperforms algorithms which fail to consider the diversity of different users' interests. | 2009 | News article extraction with template-independent wrapperabstractWe consider the problem of template-independent news extraction. The state-of-the-art news extraction method is based on template-level wrapper induction, which has two serious limitations. 1) It cannot correctly extract pages belonging to an unseen template until the wrapper for that template has been generated. 2) It is costly to maintain up-to-date wrappers for hundreds of websites, because any change of a template may lead to the invalidation of the corresponding wrapper. In this paper we formalize news extraction as a machine learning problem and learn a template-independent wrapper using a very small number of labeled news pages from a single site. Novel features dedicated to news titles and bodies are developed respectively. Correlations between the news title and the news body are exploited. Our template-independent wrapper can extract news pages from different sites regardless of templates. In experiments, a wrapper is learned from 40 pages from a single news site. | 2008 | Guide focused crawler efficiently and effectively using on-line topical importance estimationabstractFocused crawling is a critical technique for topical resource discovery on the Web. We propose a new frontier prioritizing algorithm, namely, the OTIE (On-line Topical Importance Estimation) algorithm, which efficiently and effectively combines link-based and content-based analysis to evaluate the priority of an uncrawled URL in the frontier. We then demonstrate OTIE's advantages over traditional prioritizing algorithms by real crawling experiments. Ziyu Guan, Can Wang 0001, Chun Chen 0001, Jiajun Bu
