| 2024 | Efficient Reverse k Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search Over High-Dimensional VectorsabstractReverse$k$nearest neighbor search$(\mathbf{R}k\mathbf{NNS})$plays an important role in various data processing and analysis tasks, seeking to pinpoint data considering the query data$q$among their$k$nearest neighbors. As large models gain popularity, processing high-dimensional vectors has become more and more widespread. However, existing$\mathbf{R}k\mathbf{NNS}$solutions face inefficiency when handling large-scale high-dimensional vectors due to their sensitivity to data dimensions and sizes during index construction or the verification of numerous candidate results in the query phase. Motivated by these challenges and the inherent intricacies of high-dimensional data processing, in this paper, we study an approximate version of the$\mathbf{R}k\mathbf{NNS}$problem$(\mathbf{R}k\mathbf{ANNS})$for high-dimensional vectors, aiming to offer efficient and practical solutions. To this end, we propose a new proximity-graph-based index called HAMG, which enables finding the query results within$k$hops from$q$. We also present a user-friendly query algorithm on HAMG that can adaptively adjust the search scope based on the desired query recall of users. To further enhance the query process, two pruning strategies are proposed to reduce the number of candidates requiring verification. Extensive experiments validate that HAMG scales well for data dimensions and sizes, and our query algorithm improves query efficiency by up to two orders of magnitude while maintaining comparable query accuracy against existing approaches. | 2023 | Ganos Aero: A Cloud-Native System for Big Raster Data Management and ProcessingabstractThe development of Earth Observation technology contributes to the production of massive raster data. It is vital to manage and conduct analytical tasks on the raster data. Existing solutions employ dedicated systems for the raster data management and processing, respectively, incurring problems such as data redundancy, difficulty in updating, expensive data transferring and transformation, etc. To cope with these limitations, this demonstration presents Ganos Aero, a cloud-native system for big raster data management and processing. Ganos Aero proposes a unified raster data model for both the data management and processing, which stores a single copy of the raster data and without performing an expensive tiling procedure, and thus achieves significant improvement in the storage and updating efficiency. To enable efficient query and batch task processing, Ganos Aero implements an on-the-fly tile production mechanism, and optimizes its performance using the cloud features including decoupling compute from storage and pushing costly operations closer to the storage layer. Since deployed in Alibaba Cloud in 2022, Ganos Aero has been playing a critical role in many real applications including the modern agriculture, environment monitoring and protection, et al. | 2022 | VRE: A Versatile, Robust, and Economical Trajectory Data SystemabstractManaging massive trajectory data from various moving objects has always been a demanding task. A desired trajectory data system should be versatile in its supported query types and distance functions, of low storage cost, and be consistently efficient on processing trajectory data of different properties. Unfortunately, none of the existing systems can meet the above three criteria at the same time. To this end, we propose VRE, aversatile, robust, andeconomical trajectory data system.VRE separates the storage from the processing. In the storage layer, we propose a novel segment-based storage model that takes advantage of the strengths of both point-based and trajectory-based storage models. VRE supports these three storage models and ten storage schemas upon them. With the secondary index, VRE reduces the storage cost up to 3x. In the processing layer, we first propose a two-stage processing framework and a pushdown strategy to alleviate full trajectory transmission cost. Then, we design a unified pruning strategy for five widely used trajectory distance functions and numerous tailored processing algorithms for five advanced queries. Extensive experiments are conducted to verify the design choice and efficiency of VRE, from which we present some key insights that are crucial to both VRE and future trajectory system's design. | 2022 | Ganos: A Multidimensional, Dynamic, and Scene-Oriented Cloud-Native Spatial Database EngineabstractRecently, the trend of developing digital twins for smart cities has driven a need for managing large-scale multidimensional, dynamic, and scene-oriented spatial data. Due to larger data scale and more complex data structure, queries over such data are more complicated and expensive than those on traditional spatial data, which poses challenges to the system efficiency and deployment costs. The existing spatial databases have limited support in both data types and operations. Therefore, a new-generation spatial database with excellent performance and effective deployment costs is needed. This paper presents Ganos, a cloud-native spatial database engine of PolarDB for PostgreSQL that is developed by Alibaba Cloud, to efficiently manage multidimensional, dynamic, and scene-oriented spatial data. Ganos models 3D space and spatio-temporal dynamics as first-class citizens. Also, it natively supports spatial/spatio-temporal data types such as 3DMesh, Trajectory, Raster, PointCloud, etc. Besides, it implements a novel extended-storage mechanism that utilizes cloud-native object storage to reduce storage costs and enable uniform operations on the data in different storages. To facilitate processing "big" queries, Ganos extends PolarDB and provides spatial-oriented multi-level parallelism under the architecture of decoupling compute from storage in cloud-native databases, which achieves elasticity and excellent query performance. We demonstrate Ganos in real-life case studies. The performance of Ganos is evaluated using real datasets, and promising results are obtained. Finally, based on the extensive deployment and application of Ganos, the lessons learned from our customers and the expectations of modern cloud applications for new spatial database features are discussed. | 2020 | Skia: Scalable and Efficient In-Memory Analytics for Big Spatial-Textual DataabstractIn recent years, spatial-keyword queries have attracted much attention with the fast development of location-based services. However, current spatial-keyword techniques are disk-based, which cannot fulfill the requirements of high throughput and low response time. With the surging data size, people tend to process data in distributed in-memory environments to achieve low latency. In this paper, we present the distributed solution, i.e., Skia (Spatial-Keyword In-memory Analytics), to provide a scalable backend for spatial-textual analytics. Skia introduces a two-level index framework for big spatial-textual data including: (1) efficient and scalable global index, which prunes the candidate partitions a lot while achieving small space budget; and (2) four novel local indexes, that further support low latency services for exact and approximate spatial-keyword queries. Skia can support common spatial-keyword queries via traditional SQL programming interfaces. The experiments conducted on large-scale real datasets have demonstrated the promising performance of the proposed indexes and our distributed solution. | 2011 | Spatio-temporal structure of SST in El Niño regions and its relationships with zonal displacement anomaly of western Pacific warm poolabstractUsing the monthly averaged NOAA PSD optimal interpolation sea surface temperature (OISST) data from December 1981 to April 2009, this paper adopted the empirical orthogonal function and power spectral density to analyzing the SST fields' spatial-temporal structure of El Niño1, El Niño2, El Niño3 and El Niño4, respectively. The first modal analysis has shown that: (1) time coefficients of El Niño1, El Niño3 and El Niño4 are well associated with zonal displacement anomalies at eastern edge of western Pacific warm pool (WPWP), and the main periods of the coefficients are almost same as ENSO with about 57 months. But the time coefficient of El Niño2 does not show this characteristic in term of time cycle; (2) the corresponding spatial structure of SST fields of El Niño1 and El Niño2 distributes along the northwest 45° with the positive center at northeast and the negative center at southwest, and El Niño3 region and El Niño region 4 distributes longitudinally along 2°N with transformation of positive to negative from right to left. Also, the correlation analysis between zonal displacement anomalies at eastern edge of western Pacific warm pool and ENSO indices has shown that the former is ahead of about a 2-month leading of El Niño indices in the duration of El Niño, while during the La Niña, the former lags behind about a 4/5-month of La Niña indices. | 2011 | Reliability analysis of an energy-aware RAID systemabstractWe develop a mathematical model - MREED - to quantitatively evaluate the failure rate of energy-efficient parallel storage systems. The Power-Aware Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disk (PARAID) aims to reduce energy use of commodity server-class disks without specialized hardware. The goal of PARAID is to skewed striping pattern to adapt to the system load by changing the number of powered disks. By spinning down disks during light workloads, PARAID can reduce power consumption, while still meeting performance demands. We show that MREED can be used to estimate a five-disk PARAID-0 system. We validate the accuracy of MREED using the DiskSim simulator. Our approach shows that MREED can rely on file access pattern to estimate system utilization correctly. Furthermore, even thought PARAID may achieve reasonable reliability, our model shows that PARAID's reliability is affected by data locality. | 2011 | Secure Fragment Allocation in a Distributed Storage System with Heterogeneous VulnerabilitiesabstractThere is a growing demand for large-scale distributed storage systems to support resource sharing and fault tolerance. Although heterogeneity issues of distributed systems have been widely investigated, little attention has yet been paid to security solutions designed for distributed storage systems with heterogeneous vulnerabilities. This fact motivates us to investigate a fragment allocation scheme called S-FAS to improve security of a distributed system where storage sites have a wide variety of vulnerabilities. In the S-FAS approach, we integrate file fragmentation with the secret sharing technique in a distributed storage system with heterogeneous vulnerabilities. Storage sites in a distributed systems are classified into a variety of different server types based on vulnerability characteristics. Given a file and a distributed system, S-FAS allocates fragments of the file to as many different types of nodes as possible in the system. Data confidentiality is preserved because fragments of a file are allocated to multiple storage nodes. We develop storage assurance and dynamic assurance models to evaluate the quality of security offered by S-FAS. Analysis results show that fragment allocations made by S-FAS lead to enhanced security because of the consideration of heterogeneous vulnerabilities in distributed storage systems. | 2010 | Energy Efficient Prefetching with Buffer Disks for Cluster File SystemsabstractEnergy efficient computing is becoming increasingly important as the scale of parallel computing systems is expanding. As the processing power of parallel computing systems has been incremented there has been an increased demand for large scale storage systems to store the output of these parallel computing systems. Data centers are growing at an enormous pace and it is important to investigate a means of managing the energy efficiency of large scale parallel storage systems. To address these issues we introduce EEVFS (Energy Efficient Virtual File System), which is able to manage data placement and disk states to help improve the energy efficiency of a parallel disk system. EEVFS places data on the storage disks in an energy efficient layout and attempts to predict when each disk will be idle for a large period of time, facilitating a state transition into the standby state. EEVFS should also maintain relatively high performance, so we have built a load balancing policy into the data partitioning of EEVFS. The implementation architecture and measured results are presented to demonstrate the energy efficiency and performance characteristics of EEVFS. | 2010 | ES-MPICH2: A Message Passing Interface with enhanced securityabstractIn largely distributed clusters, computing nodes are geographically deployed in various computing sites. Information processed in a distributed cluster is shared among a group of distributed processes or users by virtue of messages passing protocols (e.g. message passing interface - MPI) running on the Internet. Because of the open accessible nature of the Internet, data encryption for these large-scale distributed clusters becomes a non-trivial and challenging problem. To address this issue, we enhanced the security of the MPI (Message Passing Interface) protocol by encrypting and decrypting messages sent and received among computing nodes. In this study we focused on MPI rather than other protocols because MPI is one of the most popular communication protocols for cluster computing environments. From among a variety of MPI implementations, we picked MPICH2 developed by the Argonne National Laboratory. The design goal of MPICH2 - a widely used MPI implementation - is to combine portability with high performance. We integrated encryption algorithms into the MPICH2 library so that data confidentiality of MPI applications could be readily preserved without a need to change the source codes of the MPI applications. since we provide a security enhanced MPI-library with the standard MPI interfact, data communications of a conventional MPI program can be secured without converting the program into the corresponding secure version. We used Sandia Micro Benchmark and Intel MPI Benchmarks to evaluate and compared the performance of original MPICH2 and Enhanced Security MPICH2. According to the performance evaluation, ES-MPICH2 provides secured Message Passing Interface by sacrificing reasonable system performance. Xiaojun Ruan, Qing Yang 0003, Mohammed I. | 2009 | ECOS: An energy-efficient cluster storage systemabstractCluster storage systems are essential building blocks for many high-end computing infrastructures. Although energy conservation techniques have been intensively studied in the context of clusters and disk arrays, improving energy efficiency of cluster storage systems remains an open issue. To address this problem, we describe in this paper an approach to implementing an energy-efficient cluster storage system or ECOS for short. ECOS relies on the architecture of cluster storage systems in which each I/O node manages multiple disks - one buffer disk and several data disks. Given an I/O node, the key idea behind ECOS is to redirect disk requests from data disks to the buffer disk. To balance I/O load among I/O nodes, ECOS might redirect requests from one I/O node into the others. Redirecting requests is a driving force of energy saving, and the reason is two-fold. First, ECOS makes an effort to keep buffer disks active while placing data disks into standby in a long time period to conserve energy. Second, ECOS reduces the number of disk spin downs/ups in I/O nodes. The idea of ECOS was implemented in a Linux cluster, where each I/O node contains one buffer disk and two data disks. Experimental results show that ECOS improves the energy efficiency of traditional cluster storage systems where buffer disks are not employed. Adding one extra buffer disk into each I/O node seemingly has negative impact on energy saving. Interestingly, our results indicate that ECOS equipped with extra buffer disks is more energy efficient than the same cluster storage system without the buffer disks. The implication of the experiments is that using existing data disks in I/O nodes to perform as buffer disks can achieve even higher energy efficiency. | 2009 | Improving reliability of energy-efficient parallel storage systems by disk swappingabstractThe Popular Disk Concentration (PDC) technique and the Massive Array of Idle Disks (MAID) technique are two effective energy saving schemes for parallel disk systems. The goal of PDC and MAID is to skew I/O load towards a few disks so that other disks can be transitioned to low power states to conserve energy. I/O load skewing techniques like PDC and MAID inherently affect reliability of parallel disks because disks storing popular data tend to have high failure rates than disks storing cold data. To achieve good tradeoffs between energy efficiency and disk reliability, we first present a reliability model to quantitatively study the reliability of energy-efficient parallel disk systems equipped with the PDC and MAID schemes. Then, we propose a novel strategy—disk swapping—to improve disk reliability by alternating disks storing hot data with disks holding cold data. We demonstrate that our disk-swapping strategies not only can increase the lifetime of cache disks in MAID-based parallel disk systems, but also can improve reliability of PDC-based parallel disk systems.
