2020 Influence of impulsive noise from lifts on orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing digital radio mondiale signals
abstract
Wireless communications are constantly growing with the aim of providing solutions in complex scenarios, such as industrial environments and indoor locations, where impulsive noise sources interfere with the desired signal. Orthogonal frequency‐division multiplexing (OFDM) is the most widely used technology, robust against Gaussian noise but sensitive to impulsive noise. To ensure better system performance, it is necessary to the study the impulsive noise and its effects. This work responds to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which in ITU‐R 214 6/3 question asks for new updated noise measurements to study the systems performance. On the one hand, the study provides novel results of the impulse noise parameters from lifts and, on the other hand, analyses the influence of the impulsive noise originated from lifts at 18 MHz on OFDM digital radio mondiale (DRM) signals. Some radio noise patterns have been measured when lifts are moving up and down. The Gaussian and the impulsive components of these measurements have been computed. The influence of noise patterns in the reception of DRM‐OFDM audio signals has been tested with different configuration parameters. The results provided in this report prove that OFDM signals tested are significantly degraded in the vicinity of lifts.

2013 A Measurement-Based Multipath Channel Model for Signal Propagation in Presence of Wind Farms in the UHF Band
abstract
Scattering signals on wind turbines may lead to degradation problems on the communication systems provided in the UHF band, such as terrestrial television broadcasting, broadband wireless systems or public safety services. To date, despite the continuous requests from the International Telecommunication Union for studies on this field, no channel model has been developed to characterize signal propagation under these particular conditions. In response to this necessity, this paper presents a complete Tapped Delay Line (TDL) channel model to characterize multipath propagation in presence of a wind farm, including novel scattering modeling and Doppler spectra characterization. As proved later, this channel model, which is based on both theoretical development and empirical data obtained in the surroundings of a real wind farm, is adaptable to the particular features of any case under study: wind turbine dimensions, working frequency, and relative location of the wind farm, transmitter and receivers.

2009 Optimization of the Coverage Area for DVB-T Single Frequency Networks Using a Particle Swarm Based Method
abstract
Single frequency networks (SFN) are usually considered to deploy OFDM modulation based digital broadcast systems, exploiting the multipath tolerance of the OFDM receivers, which are capable of combining signals coming from several transmitters with different propagation delays. In this work, a planning tool is proposed to improve the coverage area in SFN networks, optimizing transmission parameters such as the transmitters delay or power, using 3D digital terrain maps along with a propagation prediction tool to estimate the power received at each location inside the coverage area. A heuristic particle swarm optimization algorithm is used (PSO) to optimize transmission parameters. The approach proposed makes it possible to consider several configurations regarding both transmitters and receivers. Preliminary test results are shown for a SFN with eighteen transmitters and omnidirectional radiators at both sides that demonstrate the usefulness of the approach. Furthermore, results considering receivers with directive antennas as well as transmitters with sectored antennas are also included and discussed.
