2023 CFS: Scaling Metadata Service for Distributed File System via Pruned Scope of Critical Sections
abstract
There is a fundamental tension between metadata scalability and POSIX semantics within distributed file systems. The bottleneck lies in the coordination, mainly locking, used for ensuring strong metadata consistency, namely, atomicity and isolation. CFS is a scalable, fully POSIX-compliant distributed file system that eliminates the metadata management bottleneck via pruning the scope of critical sections for reduced locking overhead. First, CFS adopts a tiered metadata organization to scale file attributes and the remaining namespace hierarchies independently with appropriate partitioning and indexing methods, eliminating cross-shard distributed coordination. Second, it further scales up the single metadata shard performance by single-shard atomic primitives, shortening the metadata requests' lifespan and removing spurious conflicts. Third, CFS drops the metadata proxy layer but employs the light-weight, scalable client-side metadata resolving. CFS has been running in the production environment of Baidu AI Cloud for three years. Our evaluation with a 50-node cluster and microbenchmarks shows that CFS simultaneously improves the throughput of baselines like HopsFS and InfiniFS by 1.76--75.82× and 1.22--4.10×, and reduces their average latency by up to 91.71% and 54.54%, respectively. Under cases with higher contention and larger directories, CFS' throughput benefits expand by one order of magnitude. For three real-world workloads with data accesses, CFS introduces 1.62--2.55× end-to-end throughput speedups and 35.06--62.47% tail latency reductions over InfiniFS.

2023 RUSPATCH: Towards Timely and Effectively Patching Rust Applications
abstract
Despite the fact that Rust is designed to be a secure programming language for system programming, it is still vulnerable and exploitable due to its inclusion of an unsafe sub-language. However, existing studies on Rust security only focus on static detection or rectification of vulnerability, but ignore the problem of timely and effective rectifications of vulnerabilities dynamically. In this paper, to fill this gap, we present RUSPATCH, the first infrastructure to timely and effectively patch vulnerable Rust applications. RUSPATCH consists of two main phases: static partitioning and dynamic patching. In the static partitioning phase, RUSPATCH divides the candidate program into target code and patch candidates via a customized compiler. During the patching phase, RUSPATCH dynamically validates and applies the security patch once a vulnerability is detected. To realize the whole process, we tackled three technical challenges of language discrepancy, efficiency issues, and security threats. We have designed and implemented a software prototype for RUSPATCH, and have conducted extensive experiments to evaluate its effectiveness, performance, overhead, and usefulness. Experimental results demonstrated that RusPATCH is effective in patching off-the-shelf Rust applications including real-world Rust CVEs, and the extra overhead RusPATCH introduced is less than 3.28% and thus insignificant. Furthermore, RUSPATCH is easy to incorporate into existing Rust applications without any manual interventions.

2021 Efficient Data Loader for Fast Sampling-Based GNN Training on Large Graphs
abstract
Emerging graph neural networks (GNNs) have extended the successes of deep learning techniques against datasets like images and texts to more complex graph-structured data. By leveraging GPU accelerators, existing frameworks combine mini-batch and sampling for effective and efficient model training on large graphs. However, this setup faces a scalability issue since loading rich vertex features from CPU to GPU through a limited bandwidth link usually dominates the training cycle. In this article, we propose PaGraph, a novel, efficient data loader that supports general and efficient sampling-based GNN training on single-server with multi-GPU. PaGraph significantly reduces the data loading time by exploiting available GPU resources to keep frequently-accessed graph data with a cache. It also embodies a lightweight yet effective caching policy that takes into account graph structural information and data access patterns of sampling-based GNN training simultaneously. Furthermore, to scale out on multiple GPUs, PaGraph develops a fast GNN-computation-aware partition algorithm to avoid cross-partition access during data-parallel training and achieves better cache efficiency. Finally, it overlaps data loading and GNN computation for further hiding loading costs. Evaluations on two representative GNN models, GCN and GraphSAGE, using two sampling methods, Neighbor and Layer-wise, show that PaGraph could eliminate the data loading time from the GNN training pipeline, and achieve up to 4.8× performance speedup over the state-of-the-art baselines. Together with preprocessing optimization, PaGraph further delivers up to 16.0× end-to-end speedup.
