| 2024 | Consistency Regularization for Domain Generalization with Logit Attribution MatchingabstractDomain generalization (DG) is about training models that generalize well under domain shift. Previous research on DG has been conducted mostly in single-source or multi-source settings. In this paper, we consider a third lesser-known setting where a training domain is endowed with a collection of pairs of examples that share the same semantic information. Such semantic sharing (SS) pairs can be created via data augmentation and then utilized for consistency regularization (CR). We present a theory showing CR is conducive to DG and propose a novel CR method called Logit Attribution Matching (LAM). We conduct experiments on five DG benchmarks and four pretrained models with SS pairs created by both generic and targeted data augmentation methods. LAM outperforms representative single/multi-source DG methods and various CR methods that leverage SS pairs. The code and data of this project are available at https://github.com/Gaohan123/LAM. | 2024 | Towards Efficient Visual Simplification of Computational Graphs in Deep Neural NetworksabstractA computational graph in a deep neural network (DNN) denotes a specific data flow diagram (DFD) composed of many tensors and operators. Existing toolkits for visualizing computational graphs are not applicable when the structure is highly complicated and large-scale (e.g., BERT (Devlin et al. 2019)). To address this problem, we propose leveraging a suite of visual simplification techniques, including a cycle-removing method, a module-based edge-pruning algorithm, and an isomorphic subgraph stacking strategy. We design and implement an interactive visualization system that is suitable for computational graphs with up to 10 thousand elements. Experimental results and usage scenarios demonstrate that our tool reduces 60% elements on average and hence enhances the performance for recognizing and diagnosing DNN models. Our contributions are integrated into an open-source DNN visualization toolkit, namely, MindInsight [2]. | 2024 | Visual Diagnostics of Parallel Performance in Training Large-Scale DNN ModelsabstractDiagnosing the cluster-based performance of large-scale deep neural network (DNN) models during training is essential for improving training efficiency and reducing resource consumption. However, it remains challenging due to the incomprehensibility of the parallelization strategy and the sheer volume of complex data generated in the training processes. Prior works visually analyze performance profiles and timeline traces to identify anomalies from the perspective of individual devices in the cluster, which is not amenable for studying the root cause of anomalies. In this article, we present a visual analytics approach that empowers analysts to visually explore the parallel training process of a DNN model and interactively diagnose the root cause of a performance issue. A set of design requirements is gathered through discussions with domain experts. We propose an enhanced execution flow of model operators for illustrating parallelization strategies within the computational graph layout. We design and implement an enhanced Marey's graph representation, which introduces the concept of time-span and a banded visual metaphor to convey training dynamics and help experts identify inefficient training processes. We also propose a visual aggregation technique to improve visualization efficiency. We evaluate our approach using case studies, a user study and expert interviews on two large-scale models run in a cluster, namely, the PanGu- α 13B model (40 layers), and the Resnet model (50 layers). | 2022 | A Survey of Data-Driven and Knowledge-Aware eXplainable AIabstractWe are witnessing a fast development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), but it becomes dramatically challenging to explain AI models in the past decade. “Explanation” has a flexible philosophical concept of “satisfying the subjective curiosity for causal information”, driving a wide spectrum of methods being invented and/or adapted from many aspects and communities, including machine learning, visual analytics, human-computer interaction and so on. Nevertheless, from the view-point of data and knowledge engineering (DKE), a best explaining practice that is cost-effective in terms of extra intelligence acquisition should exploit the causal information and explaining scenarios which is hidden richly in the data itself. In the past several years, there are plenty of works contributing in this line but there is a lack of a clear taxonomy and systematic review of the current effort. To this end, we propose this survey, reviewing and taxonomizing existing efforts from the view-point of DKE, summarizing their contribution, technical essence and comparative characteristics. Specifically, we categorize methods into data-driven methods where explanation comes from the task-related data, and knowledge-aware methods where extraneous knowledge is incorporated. Furthermore, in the light of practice, we provide survey of state-of-art evaluation metrics and deployed explanation applications in industrial practice.
