2021 Schnorr-Based Implicit Certification: Improving the Security and Efficiency of Vehicular Communications
abstract
In the implicit certification model, the process of verifying the validity of the signer's public key is combined with the verification of the signature itself. When compared to traditional, explicit certificates, the main advantage of the implicit approach lies in the shorter public key validation data. This property is particularly important in resource-constrained scenarios where public key validation is performed very often, which is common in vehicular communications (V2X) that employ pseudonym certificates. In this article, we show an alternative Schnorr-based implicit certification procedure that can improve the efficiency of a popular V2X-oriented Vehicular Public Key Infrastructure (VPKI), the Security Credential Management System (SCMS). As an additional contribution, we show that SCMS's underlying certificate provisioning procedure, based on butterfly keys, is vulnerable to existential forgery attacks under certain conditions. We then discuss how this issue can be fixed in an effective and efficient manner.

2019 Faster Key Compression for Isogeny-Based Cryptosystems
abstract
Supersingular isogeny-based cryptography is one of the more recent families of post-quantum proposals. An interesting feature is the comparatively low bandwidth occupation in key agreement protocols, which stems from the possibility of key compression. However, compression and decompression introduce a significant overhead to the overall processing cost despite recent progress. In this paper we address the main processing bottlenecks involved in key compression and decompression, and suggest substantial improvements for each of them. Some of our techniques may have an independent interest for other, more conventional areas of elliptic curve cryptography as well.

2016 Lyra2: Efficient Password Hashing with High Security against Time-Memory Trade-Offs
abstract
We present Lyra2, a password hashing scheme (PHS) based on cryptographic sponges. Lyra2 was designed to be strictly sequential for a given number of cores (i.e., not easily parallelizable beyond that number), providing strong security even against attackers using custom hardware or GPUs. At the same time, it is very simple to implement in software and allows legitimate users to fine tune its memory and processing costs according to the desired level of security against brute force password-guessing. Lyra2 is an improvement of the recently proposed Lyra algorithm, providing an even higher security level against different attack venues and overcoming some limitations of this and other existing schemes.

2015 Optimized and Scalable Co-Processor for McEliece with Binary Goppa Codes
abstract
Asymmetric cryptographic primitives are essential to enable secure communications in public networks or public mediums. Such primitives can be deployed as software libraries or hardware co-processors, the latter being more commonly employed in systems on chip (SoC) scenarios, embedded devices, or application-specific servers. Unfortunately, the most commonly available solutions, based on RSA or elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), are highly processing intensive due to the underlying extended-precision modular arithmetic. Consequently, they are not available on highly constrained platforms. Aiming to tackle this issue, we here investigate an alternative asymmetric encryption scheme that relies on lightweight arithmetic: McEliece. This scheme is especially appealing because, being based on error correction codes, it displays a simpler arithmetic and leads to better performance when compared to RSA or ECC. To evaluate the implementation of this scheme in hardware, we propose and analyze a flexible architecture whose security level and time versus area usage characteristics can be reconfigured as desired. The proposed architecture is suitable to all usual security levels, ranging from 80 to 256 bits. It is also very efficient, being able to perform data decryption with binary Goppa codes in 56µs with 3,402 slices on a Xilinx Spartan-3AN FPGA, whereas the best-known result in the literature for the same FPGA is 115µs with 7,331 slices. Alternatively, the architecture can operate with quasi-dyadic Goppa (QD-Goppa) codes, which involves smaller keys than traditional binary Goppa codes. In the latter case, for an 80-bit security level, the decryption operation can take from 1.1ms with 1,129 slices to 68µs with 8,268 sices. By choosing a more hardware-friendly decoding algorithm, focusing hardware resources on most bottleneck operations and sharing hardware resource for two different algorithms, better results than the those in the literature were obtained.

2013 MDPC-McEliece: New McEliece variants from Moderate Density Parity-Check codes
abstract
In this work, we propose two McEliece variants: one from Moderate Density Parity-Check (MDPC) codes and another from quasi-cyclic MDPC codes. MDPC codes are LDPC codes of higher density (and worse error-correction capability) than what is usually adopted for telecommunication applications. However, in cryptography we are not necessarily interested in correcting many errors, but only a number which ensures an adequate security level. By this approach, we reduce under certain hypotheses the security of the scheme to the well studied decoding problem. Furthermore, the quasi-cyclic variant provides extremely compact-keys (for 80-bits of security, public-keys have only 4801 bits).

2013 Decoding Square-Free Goppa Codes Over $\BBF_{p}$
abstract
We propose a new, efficient nondeterministic decoding algorithm for square-free Goppa codes over Fpfor any prime p. If the code in question has degree t and the average distance to the closest codeword is at least (4/p)t + 1, the proposed decoder can uniquely correct up to (2/p)t errors with high probability. The correction capability is higher if the distribution of error magnitudes is not uniform, approaching or reaching t errors when any particular error value occurs much more often than others or exclusively. This makes the method interesting for (semantically secure) cryptosystems based on the decoding problem for permuted and punctured Goppa codes.

2012 Revisiting the Security of the ALRED Design and Two of Its Variants: Marvin and LetterSoup
abstract
The Alred construction is a lightweight strategy for constructing message authentication algorithms from an underlying iterated block cipher. Even though this construction's original analyses show that it is secure against some attacks, the absence of formal security proofs in a strong security model still brings uncertainty on its robustness. In this paper, aiming to give a better understanding of the security level provided by different authentication algorithms based on this design strategy, we formally analyze two Alred variants—the Marvin message authentication code and the LetterSoup authenticated-encryption scheme,—bounding their security as a function of the attacker's resources and of the underlying cipher's characteristics.

2011 Key reduction of McEliece's cryptosystem using list decoding
abstract
Different variants of the code-based McEliece cryptosystem were proposed to reduce the size of the public key. All these variants use very structured codes, which open the door to new attacks exploiting the underlying structure. In this paper, we show that the quasi-dyadic variant can be designed to resist all known attacks. In light of a new study on list decoding algorithms for binary Goppa codes, we explain, as already suggested by Bernstein, Lange and Peters, how to increase the security level for given public keysizes. Using the state-of-the-art list decoding algorithm instead of unique decoding, we exhibit a keysize gain of about 4% for the standard McEliece cryptosystem and up to 21% for the adjusted quasi-dyadic variant.

2011 Comparison of Authenticated-Encryption schemes in Wireless Sensor Networks
abstract
Security is an important concern in any modern network. This also applies to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), especially those used in applications that monitor sensitive information (e.g., health care applications). However, the highly constrained nature of sensors impose a difficult challenge: their reduced availability of memory, processing power and energy hinders the deployment of many modern cryptographic algorithms considered secure. For this reason, the choice of the most memory-, processing- and energy-efficient security solutions is of vital importance in WSNs. To date, several authors have developed extensive analyses comparing different encryption algorithms and key management schemes, while very little attention has been given to message authentication mechanisms. In this paper, we address this issues by identifying Authenticated Encryption with Associated Data (AEAD) schemes suitable for WSNs and by evaluating their features and performance on TelosB sensor nodes. As a result of this analysis, we identify the recommended choices depending on the characteristics of the target network.

2010 Impact of Operating Systems on Wireless Sensor Networks (Security) Applications and Testbeds
abstract
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a valuable technology to support countless applications in different areas. Given the WSN nodes resource constrained characteristics, designing energy-aware applications, communication protocols and security mechanisms are critical. The operating system (OS) running on the WSN node also interferes with the node overall behavior, and its energy consumption. In this paper, we develop a comparison between two different operating systems (Contiki and TinyOS) running on the same hardware platform (Crossbow TelosB). Using a set of tasks, which includes sensing, communication and security mechanisms, we evaluate their behavior in terms of energy consumption and execution time.

2010 Whirlwind: a new cryptographic hash function
abstract
A new cryptographic hash function Whirlwind is presented. We give the full specification and explain the design rationale. We show how the hash function can be implemented efficiently in software and give first performance numbers. A detailed analysis of the security against state-of-the-art cryptanalysis methods is also provided. In comparison to the algorithms submitted to the SHA-3 competition, Whirlwind takes recent developments in cryptanalysis into account by design. Even though software performance is not outstanding, it compares favourably with the 512-bit versions of SHA-3 candidates such as LANE or the original CubeHash proposal and is about on par with ECHO and MD6.

2009 The MARVIN message authentication code and the LETTERSOUP authenticated encryption scheme
abstract
Abstract We present MARVIN, a new parallelizable message authentication code (MAC) based on the ALRED family. The new algorithm is designed with resource‐constrained platforms inmind and explores the structure of an underlying block cipher toprovide security at a small cost in terms of memory needs. Also,we show how MARVIN can be used as an authentication‐onlyfunction or else in an authenticated encryption with associateddata (AEAD) scheme. We define a new AEAD proposal called LETTERSOUP, which is based on the mode ofoperation. Finally, we LFSRC analyze the security and performance of theresulting schemes. 2009 Providing Integrity and Authenticity in DICOM Images: A Novel Approach
abstract
The increasing adoption of information systems in healthcare has led to a scenario where patient information security is more and more being regarded as a critical issue. Allowing patient information to be in jeopardy may lead to irreparable damage, physically, morally, and socially to the patient, potentially shaking the credibility of the healthcare institution. Medical images play a crucial role in such context, given their importance in diagnosis, treatment, and research. Therefore, it is vital to take measures in order to prevent tampering and determine their provenance. This demands adoption of security mechanisms to assure information integrity and authenticity. There are a number of works done in this field, based on two major approaches: use of metadata and use of watermarking. However, there still are limitations for both approaches that must be properly addressed. This paper presents a new method using cryptographic means to improve trustworthiness of medical images, providing a stronger link between the image and the information on its integrity and authenticity, without compromising image quality to the end user. Use of Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine structures is also an advantage for ease of development and deployment.

2001 Toward a secure public-key blockwise fragile authentication watermarking
abstract
In this paper, we describe some weaknesses of public-key blockwise fragile authentication watermarkings and the means to make them secure. Wong's (1998) original algorithm is not secure against a mere block cut-and-paste or the well-known birthday attack. To make it secure, some schemes have been proposed to make the signature of each block depend on the contents of its neighboring blocks. We attempt to maximize the change localization resolution using only one dependency per block with a scheme we call hash block chaining version 1 (HBC1). We then show that HBC1, as well as any neighbor-dependent scheme, are susceptible to another forgery technique that we have named a transplantation attack. We also show a new kind of birthday attack that can be effectively mounted against HBC1. To thwart these attacks, we propose using a nondeterministic digital signature together with a signature dependent scheme (HBC2). Finally, we discuss the advantages of using discrete logarithm signatures instead of RSA for watermarking.

2000 Fast Binary Image Resolution Increasing by K-Nearest Neighbor Learning
abstract
In a typical office environment, heterogeneous devices and software, each working in a different spatial resolution, must interact together. Thus, there frequently arises the resolution conversion problem. The present paper addresses the spatial resolution increasing of binary images and documents (for example, conversion of a 300 dpi image into 600 dpi). A new and efficient solution to this problem is proposed. It makes use of k-nearest neighbor learning to automatically design the optimal windowed zoom operator starting from pairs of in-out sample images. The k-nearest neighbor learning has good inductive bias that allows reducing the quantity of the training sample images needed. The resulting operator is stored in a look-up-table, which is extremely fast computationally.
