Semi-passive optical front-haul supporting channel monitoring and link protection for the cloud radio access networkabstractTo accommodate the extremely large traffic load on the front‐haul of a cloud radio access network, optical fibres along with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology have become the de facto solution. In this study, the authors propose the model of a semi‐passive front‐haul device that can overcome the vulnerability of the optical fibre by using duplicated optical fibres and optical power monitoring for each WDM channel. Experiments conducted on the implemented prototype demonstrate that the link protection mechanism satisfies the regulation imposed by the international standard and that the optical power monitoring results are accurate. Thus, the proposed semi‐passive front‐haul device provides a high link reliability, fault reporting capability, and low operating cost. Chi-Young Park, Jun-Ki Min, Seung-Hee Kim

A Step forward for Spatial Skyline Queries for a Group of Users: Semantic in the Evidence Theory SettingabstractCities are the main poles of human and economic activity. Analyzing cities data is very important to improve the city economy as well as the life quality of the citizens. Since location based services and GPS devices can easily connect users located in different positions, it is worthwhile to optimize the efficiency of their shifting to a common location according to their preferences. For this reason, the support of advanced analysis queries such as the skyline operator has become important. This later finds the interesting objects according to a user preferences. However, data in such application can be uncertain, imprecise and incomplete. In this paper, we propose an imperfect spatial skyline query for users located in different positions. Detailed experimental analysis are reported. In addition, the theoretical properties developed in this paper help to devise efficient techniques to compute the spatial skyline over uncertain data fora set of users. Our extensive experiments show that the proposed algorithms provide quick initial response time. Sayda Elmi, Jun-Ki Min

Efficient Haar+ Synopsis Construction for the Maximum Absolute Error MeasureabstractSeveral wavelet synopsis construction algorithms were previously proposed based on dynamic programming for unrestricted Haar wavelet synopses as well as Haar + synopses. However, they find an optimal synopsis for every incoming value in each node of a coefficient tree, even if different incoming values share an identical optimal synopsis. To alleviate the limitation, we present novel algorithms, which keep only a minimal set of the distinct optimal synopses in each node of the tree, for the error-bounded synopsis problem. Furthermore, we propose the methods to restrict coefficient values to be considered to compute the optimal synopses in each node. In addition, by partitioning all optimal synopses in each node into a set of groups, such that every group can be represented by a compact representation, we significantly improve the performance of the proposed algorithms. | 2017 | Efficient Processing of Skyline Queries Using MapReduceabstractThe skyline operator has attracted considerable attention recently due to its broad applications. However, computing a skyline is challenging today since we have to deal with big data. For data-intensive applications, the MapReduce framework has been widely used recently. In this paper, we propose the efficient parallel algorithm SKY-MR+for processing skyline queries using MapReduce. We first build a quadtree-based histogram for space partitioning by deciding whether to split each leaf node judiciously based on the benefit of splitting in terms of the estimated execution time. In addition, we apply the dominance power filtering method to effectively prune non-skyline points in advance. We next partition data based on the regions divided by the quadtree and compute candidate skyline points for each partition using MapReduce. Finally, we check whether each skyline candidate point is actually a skyline point in every partition using MapReduce. We also develop the workload balancing methods to make the estimated execution times of all available machines to be similar. We did experiments to compare SKY-MR+with the state-of-the-art algorithms using MapReduce and confirmed the effectiveness as well as the scalability of SKY-MR+. | 2015 | "You Never Call, You Never Write": Call and SMS Logs Do Not Always Indicate Tie StrengthabstractHow effective are call and SMS logs in modeling tie strength? Frequency and duration of communication has long been cited as a major aspect of tie strength. Intuitively, this makes sense: people communicate with those that they feel close to. Highly cited research papers have pushed this idea further, using communication as a direct proxy for tie strength. However, this operationalization has not been validated. Our work evaluates this assumption. We collected call and SMS logs and ground truth relationship data from 36 participants. Consistent with theory, we found that frequent or long-duration communication likely indicates a strong tie. However, the use of call and SMS logs produced many errors in separating strong and weak ties, suggesting this approach is incomplete. Follow-up interviews indicate fundamental challenges for inferring tie strength from communication logs. Jason Wiese, Jun-Ki Min, Jason I. Hong, John Zimmerman

Processing of Probabilistic Skyline Queries Using MapReduceabstractThere has been an increased growth in a number of applications that naturally generate large volumes of uncertain data. By the advent of such applications, the support of advanced analysis queries such as the skyline and its variant operators for big uncertain data has become important. In this paper, we propose the effective parallel algorithms using MapReduce to process the probabilistic skyline queries for uncertain data modeled by both discrete and continuous models. We present three filtering methods to identify probabilistic non-skyline objects in advance. We next develop a single MapReduce phase algorithm PS-QP-MR by utilizing space partitioning based on a variant of quadtrees to distribute the instances of objects effectively and the enhanced algorithm PS-QPF-MR by applying the three filtering methods additionally. We also propose the workload balancing technique to balance the workload of reduce functions based on the number of machines available. Finally, we present the brute-force algorithms PS-BR-MR and PS-BRF-MR with partitioning randomly and applying the filtering methods. In our experiments, we demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of PS-QPF-MR compared to the other algorithms. Yoonjae Park, Jun-Ki Min, Kyuseok Shim

Toss 'n' turn: smartphone as sleep and sleep quality detectorabstractThe rapid adoption of smartphones along with a growing habit for using these devices as alarm clocks presents an opportunity to use this device as a sleep detector. This adds value to UbiComp and personal informatics in terms of user context and new performance data to collect and visualize, and it benefits healthcare as sleep is correlated with many health issues. To assess this opportunity, we collected one month of phone sensor and sleep diary entries from 27 people who have a variety of sleep contexts. We used this data to construct models that detect sleep and wake states, daily sleep quality, and global sleep quality. Our system classifies sleep state with 93.06% accuracy, daily sleep quality with 83.97% accuracy, and overall sleep quality with 81.48% accuracy. Individual models performed better than generally trained models, where the individual models require 3 days of ground truth data and 3 weeks of ground truth data to perform well on detecting sleep and sleep quality, respectively. Finally, the features of noise and movement were useful to infer sleep quality. Jun-Ki Min, Afsaneh Doryab, Jason Wiese, Shahriyar Amini, John Zimmerman, Jason I. Hong

Mining smartphone data to classify life-facets of social relationshipsabstractPeople engage with many overlapping social networks and enact diverse social roles across different facets of their lives. Unfortunately, many online social networking services reduce most people's contacts to "friend". A richer computational model of relationships would be useful for a number of applications such as managing privacy settings and organizing communications. In this paper, we take a step towards a richer computational model by using call and text message logs from mobile phones to classifying contacts according to life facet (family, work, and social). We extract various features such as communication intensity, regularity, medium, and temporal tendency, and classify the relationships using machine-learning techniques. Our experimental results on 40 users showed that we could classify life facets with up to 90.5% accuracy. The most relevant features include call duration, channel selection, and time of day for the communication. Jun-Ki Min, Jason Wiese, Jason I. Hong, John Zimmerman

Parallel Computation of Skyline and Reverse Skyline Queries Using MapReduceabstractThe skyline operator and its variants such as dynamic skyline and reverse skyline operators have attracted considerable attention recently due to their broad applications. However, computations of such operators are challenging today since there is an increasing trend of applications to deal with big data. For such data-intensive applications, the MapReduce framework has been widely used recently. In this paper, we propose efficient parallel algorithms for processing the skyline and its variants using MapReduce. We first build histograms to effectively prune out nonskyline (non-reverse skyline) points in advance. We next partition data based on the regions divided by the histograms and compute candidate (reverse) skyline points for each region independently using MapReduce. Finally, we check whether each candidate point is actually a (reverse) skyline point in every region independently. Our performance study confirms the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed algorithms. Yoonjae Park, Jun-Ki Min, Kyuseok Shim

Activity recognition based on wearable sensors using selection/fusion hybrid ensembleabstractActivity recognition with mobile sensors is a challenging task due to the inherent noisy nature of the input data and resource limitations of the target platform. This paper presents a novel method of hybridizing classifier selection and classifier fusion in order to address these difficulties. It efficiently decreases the computational cost by activating appropriate classifiers according to the characteristics of the given input, and resolves the pattern variations by combining the chosen classifiers with localized templates. The proposed method is integrated with a wearable system that includes five motion sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes), a set of bio-signal sensors, and data-gloves. The experiments on two different levels of activities, such as 11 primitive motions and eight composite behaviors, demonstrated that the proposed method is useful to the wearable systems. | 2011 | Mobile Human Network Management and Recommendation by Probabilistic Social MiningabstractRecently, inferring or sharing of mobile contexts has been actively investigated as cell phones have become more than a communication device. However, most of them focused on utilizing the contexts on social network services, while the means in mining or managing the human network itself were barely considered. In this paper, the SmartPhonebook, which mines users' social connections to manage their relationships by reasoning social and personal contexts, is presented. It works like an artificial assistant which recommends the candidate callees whom the users probably would like to contact in a certain situation. Moreover, it visualizes their social contexts like closeness and relationship with others in order to let the users know their social situations. The proposed method infers the social contexts based on the contact patterns, while it extracts the personal contexts such as the users' emotional states and behaviors from the mobile logs. Here, Bayesian networks are exploited to handle the uncertainties in the mobile environment. The proposed system has been implemented with the MS Windows Mobile 2003 SE Platform on Samsung SPH-M4650 smartphone and has been tested on real-world data. The experimental results showed that the system provides an efficient and informative way for mobile social networking. Jun-Ki Min, Sung-Bae Cho

Fingerprint classification based on subclass analysis using multiple templates of support vector machinesabstractFingerprint classification reduces the searching time of an automated fingerprint identification system. Since fingerprints have properties of intra-class diversities and inter-class similarities, the ambiguous example causes a difficult problem in the fingerprint classification. In order to addres s the problem, we have analyzed fingerprints' subclasses with multiple decision templates. It clusters the soft outputs of support vector machines (SVMs) into several sub-classes using the self-organizing maps, and estimates a localized template for each sub-class. For an input fingerprint, the proposed method matches the output vector of SVMs to each template and finally categorizes the sample into the class of the most similar template. Experimental results on the FingerCode dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the subclass-based approach compared with previous methods. Jun-Ki Min, Jin-Hyuk Hong, Sung-Bae Cho

An effective semantic search technique using ontologyabstractIn this paper, we present a semantic search technique considering the type of desired Web resources and the semantic relationships between the resources and the query keywords in the ontology. In order to effectively retrieve the most relevant top-k resources, we propose a novel ranking model. To do this, we devise a measure to determine the weight of the semantic relationship. In addition, we consider the number of meaningful semantic relationships between a resource and keywords, the coverage of keywords, and the distinguishability of keywords. Through experiments using real datasets, we observe that our ranking model provides more accurate semantic search results compared to existing ranking models. Jun-Ki Min, Chin-Wan Chung

Multiple Decision Templates with Adaptive Features for Fingerprint ClassificationabstractThis paper proposes a novel fingerprint classification method using multiple decision templates of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) with adaptive features. In order to overcome intra-class and inter-class ambiguities of fingerprints, the proposed method extracts a feature vector from an adaptively detected feature region and classifies the feature vector using SVMs. The outputs of the SVMs are then combined by multiple decision templates that make several per class. Experimental results on NIST4 fingerprint database revealed the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method for fingerprint classification. Jun-Ki Min, Sung-Bae Cho

A compressor for effective archiving, retrieval, and updating of XML documentsabstractLike HTML, many XML documents are resident on native file systems. Since XML data is irregular and verbose, the disk space and the network bandwidth are wasted. To overcome the verbosity problem, research on compressors for XML data has been conducted. Some XML compressors do not support querying compressed data, while other XML compressors which support querying compressed data blindly encode tags and data values using predefined encoding methods. Existing XML compressors do not provide the facility for updates on compressed XML data.In this article, we propose XPRESS, an XML compressor which supports direct updates and efficient evaluations of queries on compressed XML data. XPRESS adopts a novel encoding method called reverse arithmetic encoding , which encodes label paths of XML data and applies diverse encoding methods depending on the types of data values. Experimental results with real-life data sets show that XPRESS achieves significant improvements on query performance for compressed XML data and reasonable compression ratios. On average, the query performance of XPRESS is 2.13 times better than that of an existing XML compressor, and the compression ratio of XPRESS is about 71%. Additionally, we demonstrate the efficiency of the updates performed directly on compressed XML data. Jun-Ki Min, Myung-Jae Park, Chin-Wan Chung

| 2002 | APEX: an adaptive path index for XML dataabstractThe emergence of the Web has increased interests in XML data. XML query languages such as XQuery and XPath use label paths to traverse the irregularly structured data. Without a structural summary and efficient indexes, query processing can be quite inefficient due to an exhaustive traversal on XML data. To overcome the inefficiency, several path indexes have been proposed in the research community. Traditional indexes generally record all label paths from the root element in XML data. Such path indexes may result in performance degradation due to large sizes and exhaustive navigations for partial matching path queries start with the self-or-descendent axis("//").In this paper, we propose APEX, an adaptive path index for XML data. APEX does not keep all paths starting from the root and utilizes frequently used paths to improve the query performance. APEX also has a nice property that it can be updated incrementally according to the changes of query workloads. Experimental results with synthetic and real-life data sets clearly confirm that APEX improves query processing cost typically 2 to 54 times better than the existing indexes, with the performance gap increasing with the irregularity of XML data.
