TOSC: Task-Oriented Shape Completion for Open-World Dexterous Grasp Generation from Partial Point CloudsabstractTask-oriented dexterous grasping remains challenging in robotic manipulations of open-world objects under severe partial observation, where significant missing data invalidates generic shape completion. In this paper, to overcome this limitation, we study \emph{Task-Oriented Shape Completion}, a new task that focuses on completing the potential contact regions rather than the entire shape. We argue that shape completion for grasping should be explicitly guided by the downstream manipulation task. To achieve this, we first generate multiple task-oriented shape completion candidates by leveraging the zero-shot capabilities of object functional understanding from several pre-trained foundation models. A 3D discriminative autoencoder is then proposed to evaluate the plausibility of each generated candidate and optimize the most plausible one from a global perspective. A conditional flow-matching model named FlowGrasp is developed to generate task-oriented dexterous grasps from the optimized shape. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in task-oriented dexterous grasping and task-oriented shape completion, improving the Grasp Displacement and the Chamfer Distance over the state-of-the-art by 16.17% and 55.26%, respectively. In particular, it shows good capabilities in grasping objects with severe missing data. It also demonstrates good generality in handling open-set categories and tasks. Weishang Wu, Zhiping Cai

BIFM: an effective similar payload attribution approach for cybercriminal detection using bitmap index table and fuzzy matchingabstractAbstract The payload attribution system has been proposed to analyze network traffic and assist investigators in identifying flows containing specific excerpts to locate criminals and potential victims. However, various attacks or data leakage behaviors can obscure and scatter the crucial portion of flow payloads to evade detection. Although existing payload attribution techniques strive to enhance the data reduction ratio and reduce false positive rates, research on similar payload querying is notably lacking. In this study, we introduce bitmap index table fuzzy matching (BIFM), a method for digesting network traffic to query and trace variants of malicious traffic. Unlike deterministic bitmap-index PAS that require deterministic bit co-occurrence/alignment between the query excerpt and the stored flow bitmap, an assumption violated when payloads are split or jumbled, BIFM overcomes this limitation via progressive relaxation with fuzzy matching and verification. Leveraging the bitmap index table and fuzzy matching, BIFM efficiently identifies flows containing excerpts or their variants (excerpts that change their appearance by splitting or jumbling) by relaxing the matching conditions for candidate malicious flows. To enhance BIFM’s accuracy, we also propose no-shingling and packet caching mechanisms. We extensively evaluate BIFM’s performance using a dataset constructed from real campus network IP-trace data. Our results demonstrate that BIFM outperforms existing state-of-the-art solutions, achieving an accuracy improvement of $\sim $10% without significantly increasing processing time. | 2026 | Efficient router fingerprinting in IPv6 networksabstractAbstract The pervasive interconnection of heterogeneous routing devices forms the fundamental infrastructure of modern Internet communication, making accurate router vendor identification a critical capability for multiple domains including network topology mapping, intelligent traffic engineering, and proactive cybersecurity defense. While Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) has achieved widespread global deployment as the next-generation Internet protocol, the opaque nature of its addressing mechanisms and protocol behaviors has created significant challenges in router attribute detection across IPv6 networks, leaving a crucial gap in network visibility and security analytics. To address this pressing challenge, we present IPv6 Router FingerPrinting (6RFP), an innovative lightweight fingerprinting methodology that establishes a new paradigm for IPv6 router vendor identification by systematically combining two complementary analytical dimensions: (i) comprehensive EUI-64 interface identifier analysis that captures vendor-specific hardware encoding patterns embedded in IPv6 addresses, and (ii) sophisticated IPv6 Identification Field characteristic profiling that reveals distinctive vendor implementations. Through extensive evaluation across diverse network environments, 6RFP demonstrates highly effective detection capabilities, achieving 85.79% accuracy—representing a remarkable 86.01% improvement over current state-of-the-art techniques—while maintaining minimal computational overhead suitable for real-time deployment. | 2026 | Non-Local Guided Neural Fields for 4D CT ReconstructionabstractDynamic CT reconstruction plays a crucial role in both medical and industrial applications. However, existing 4D CT reconstruction methods typically rely on complex regularization techniques or external large-scale training datasets, posing challenges for reconstruction quality and generalization when handling complex object motion and varied imaging modes. Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) offer a promising approach to dynamic CT reconstruction, but existing NeRF-based methods often assume that the scene is low-rank, limiting their representation capabilities. To address these issues, we propose NG-NeRF. First, we combine 3D and 4D hash grids for scene representation, effectively reducing temporal redundancy in static regions of dynamic scenes while improving the model’s representation capabilities and efficiency. Next, we design a non-local hash attention module to establish non-local dependencies between the features of different hash grids. This guides the model to adaptively select features based on hash table load information, significantly alleviating hash collisions and achieving the decoupling of dynamic and static regions. Besides, we introduce global continuity by employing mask positional encoding, which helps reduce the noise often introduced by grid features. Our experimental results on medical and industrial datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods by 5.84 dB and 3.4 dB, respectively, and exhibits excellent generalization ability across different 4D CT scenarios. | 2026 | Risk-Aware Privacy Preservation for LLM InferenceabstractLarge Language Model (LLM) inference services like ChatGPT are popular for enabling diverse tasks via prompts, yet they exacerbate privacy risks due to the potential exposure of sensitive data in user inputs. Existing local differential privacy (LDP)-based text sanitization mechanisms offer lightweight protection suitable for cloud-based LLM inference. Nevertheless, uniform privacy budget allocation and generalized sanitization mechanisms neglect the critical protection needs of sensitive user data, such as Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Empirical evidence of this work reveals that even with a strict privacy budget (ϵ=0.1), the sensitive information leakage rate can reach an alarmingly high 71.74%. To address these challenges, this paper proposes Rap-LI, a risk-aware privacy preservation framework for LLM inference, designed to be plug-and-play. Rap-LI performs risk identification and personalized labeling on user prompts, then develops a risk-aware LDP mechanism for text sanitization, formally proven to satisfy both token-level and sentence-level LDP guarantees. Extensive experimental results demonstrate Rap-LI’s superior privacy-utility balance. It improves privacy protection against sensitive information leakage by an average of 51.68% compared to methods with comparable utility. Our code is available at https://github.com/Cristliu/RapLI. | 2026 | FreeStyle: Toward Style-Inclusive Sketch-Based Person RetrievalabstractSketch-based Person Retrieval (SBPR) aims to identify and retrieve a target individual across non-overlapping camera views using professional sketches as queries. In practice, sketches drawn by different artists often present diverse painting styles unpredictably. The substantial style variations among sketches pose significant challenges to the stability and generalizability of SBPR models. Prior works attempt to mitigate style variations through style manipulation methods, which inevitably undermine the inherent structural relations among multiple sketch features. This leads to overfitting on existing training styles and struggles with generalizing to new, unseen sketch styles. In this paper, we introduce FreeStyle, an innovative style-inclusive framework for SBPR, built upon the foundational CLIP architecture. FreeStyle explicitly models the relations across diverse sketch styles via style consistency enhancement, enabling dynamic adaptation to both seen and unseen style variations. Specifically, Diverse Style Semantic Unification is first devised to enhance the style consistency of each identity at the semantic level by introducing objective attribute-level semantic constraints. Meanwhile, Diverse Style Feature Squeezing tackles unclear feature boundaries among identities by concentrating the intra-identity space and separating the inter-identity space, thereby strengthening style consistency at the feature representation level. Additionally, considering the feature distribution discrepancy between sketches and photos, an identity-centric cross-modal prototype alignment mechanism is introduced to facilitate identity-aware cross-modal associations and promote a compact joint embedding space. Extensive experiments validate that FreeStyle not only achieves stable performance under seen style variations but also demonstrates strong generalization to unseen sketch styles. | 2026 | HMap: Efficient Internet-Wide IPv6 Scanning With Dynamic SearchabstractInternet-wide scanning is integral to network measurement and security analysis, but the expansive address space of IPv6 limits existing approaches in achieving efficient global-scale scans. This study introduces HMap, an innovative IPv6 scanner that markedly improves scan efficiency and coverage through the implementation of a dynamic search (DS) technique, relying solely on IPv6 routeable BGP prefixes. DS employs a dynamic feedback-driven probing strategy that uses information from previous replies to prioritize more promising address regions in subsequent scans. In Internet-wide scans over IPv6, encompassing both ping-like and traceroute-like scans with DS, HMap has demonstrated its capability to discover 2.29 million non-alias active target addresses, 0.13 million peripheries/middleboxes, and 1.61 million router interfaces, using only million-scale probes. This represents a noteworthy improvement of 1.91 times, 1.63 times, and 12.38 times, respectively, compared to current state-of-the-art alternatives. Additionally, by utilizing an efficient target generation algorithm (TGA) that more effectively leverages seed addresses, HMap expands the non-alias active address count to 44.05 million. This coverage spans 18.97 thousand ASes with a one-hour scan at a limited probing speed of 100 Kpps. The volume of active IPv6 addresses is 4.88 times larger than the currently disclosed largest IPv6 hitlists, providing a more diverse set of IPv6 networks. Unlike prior IPv6 scan studies that preclude their use for Internet-scale security analysis, we also conduct the Internet-wide security scans of IPv6 networks, focusing on the exposed internal IPv6 devices and security-sensitive services in IPv6 routers. | 2025 | ALLVB: All-in-One Long Video Understanding BenchmarkabstractFrom image to video understanding, the capabilities of Multi-modal LLMs (MLLMs) are increasingly powerful. However, most existing video understanding benchmarks are relatively short, which makes them inadequate for effectively evaluating the long-sequence modeling capabilities of MLLMs. This highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive and integrated long video understanding benchmark to assess the ability of MLLMs thoroughly. To this end, we propose ALLVB (ALL-in-One Long Video Understanding Benchmark). ALLVB's main contributions include: 1) It integrates 9 major video understanding tasks. These tasks are converted into video QA formats, allowing a single benchmark to evaluate 9 different video understanding capabilities of MLLMs, highlighting the versatility, comprehensiveness, and challenging nature of ALLVB. 2) A fully automated annotation pipeline using GPT-4o is designed, requiring only human quality control, which facilitates the maintenance and expansion of the benchmark. 3) It contains 1,376 videos across 16 categories, averaging nearly 2 hours each, with a total of 252k QAs. To the best of our knowledge, it is the largest long video understanding benchmark in terms of the number of videos, average duration, and number of QAs. We have tested various mainstream MLLMs on ALLVB, and the results indicate that even the most advanced commercial models have significant room for improvement. This reflects the benchmark's challenging nature and demonstrates the substantial potential for development in long video understanding. | 2025 | Spatiotemporal-Aware Neural Fields for Dynamic CT ReconstructionabstractWe propose a dynamic Computed Tomography (CT) reconstruction framework called STNF4D (SpatioTemporal-aware Neural Fields). First, we represent the 4D scene using four orthogonal volumes and compress these volumes into more compact hash grids. Compared to the plane decomposition method, this method enhances the model's capacity while keeping the representation compact and efficient. However, in densely predicted high-resolution dynamic CT scenes, the lack of constraints and hash conflicts in the hash grid features lead to obvious dot-like artifact and blurring in the reconstructed images. To address these issues, we propose the Spatiotemporal Transformer (ST-Former) that guides the model in selecting and optimizing features by sensing the spatiotemporal information in different hash grids, significantly improving the quality of reconstructed images. We conducted experiments on medical and industrial datasets covering various motion types, sampling modes, and reconstruction resolutions. Experimental results show that our method outperforms the second-best by 5.99 dB and 4.11 dB in medical and industrial scenes, respectively. Qingyang Zhou, Yunfan Ye, Zhiping Cai

Interactive Sketch-Based Person Re-Identification with Text FeedbackabstractSketch-Based Person Re-Identification (Sketch ReID) aims to retrieve a person of interest across disjoint cameras using hand-drawn sketches as queries. A significant issue is the limited structural clues of sketch queries, which fail to convey high-level semantic retrieval intentions, such as colors and genders. Existing works typically combine sketches and texts for multi-modal retrieval, which inevitably introduces modality interference and relies heavily on expensive tri-modal datasets. In this paper, we propose, for the first time, an interactive and flexible sketch-based person retrieval framework that incorporates user feedback to refine the sketch person retrieval ranking without text training. A lightweight vision-to-text converting network is proposed to represent sketches with equivalent pseudo-word tokens, which aims to provide context assistance for interactive retrieval. Then, the sketch token can be seamlessly integrated with text feedback tokens within CLIP’s textual space for explicit sketch-text compositionality, thus achieving feedback-guided ranking refinement. Extensive experiments underscore the superiority of our InteractReID. Code will be available at https://github.com/littlexinyi/InteractReID. Cuiqun Chen, Zhiping Cai, Bo Du 0001, Mang Ye

Does One-shot Give the Best Shot? Mitigating Model Inconsistency in One-shot Federated LearningabstractTurning the multi-round vanilla Federated Learning into one-shot FL (OFL) significantly reduces the communication burden and makes a big leap toward practical deployment. However, this work empirically and theoretically unravels that existing OFL falls into a garbage (inconsistent one-shot local models) in and garbage (degraded global model) out pitfall. The inconsistency manifests as divergent feature representations and sample predictions. This work presents a novel OFL framework FAFI that enhances the one-shot training on the client side to essentially overcome inferior local uploading. Specifically, unsupervised feature alignment and category-wise prototype learning are adopted for clients’ local training to be consistent in representing local samples. On this basis, FAFI uses informativeness-aware feature fusion and prototype aggregation for global inference. Extensive experiments on three datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of FAFI, which facilitates superior performance compared with 11 OFL baselines (+10.86% accuracy). | 2025 | 6CNIS: An Efficient IPv6 Cellular Network Identification SystemabstractWith the rapid development of 5G technology and the Internet of Things, the high-speed, low-latency, and massive connectivity capabilities have made cellular networks a critical infrastructure. However, IPv6 cellular address identification, crucial in cellular network measurement, remains a significant gap. On the one hand, the combination of IPv6 with 5G renders existing methods ineffective; on the other hand, the vast address space of IPv6 makes large-scale network scanning infeasible. To address this gap, we propose a novel IPv6 cellular network identification system, leveraging round-trip time and IPv6 interface identifiers to classify network connection types for / 48 prefixes accurately. Our method achieves an accuracy of over 99% on publicly available global datasets. Furthermore, by incorporating target generation scans, we have first achieved large-scale probing worldwide. | 2025 | Grey Rhino Warning: IPv6 is Becoming Fertile Ground for Reflection Amplification AttacksabstractDistributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks represent a cost-effective and potent threat to network stability. While extensively studied in IPv4 networks, DDoS implications in IPv6 remain underexplored. The vast IPv6 address space renders brute-force scanning and amplifier testing for all active addresses impractical. Innovatively, this work investigates ASlevel vulnerabilities to reflection amplification attacks in IPv6. One prerequisite for amplification presence is that it is located in a vulnerable autonomous system (AS) without inbound source address validation (ISAV) deployment. Hence, the analysis focuses on two critical aspects: global detection of ISAV deployment and identification of amplifiers within vulnerable ASes. Specifically, we develop a methodology combining ICMP Time Exceeded mechanisms for ISAV detection, employ IPv6 address scanning for amplifier identification, and utilize dual vantage points for amplification verification. Experimental results reveal that 4,460 ASes (61.36% of measured networks) lack ISAV deployment. | 2025 | Prevalence Overshadows Concerns? Understanding Chinese Users' Privacy Awareness and Expectations Towards LLM-Based Healthcare ConsultationabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly gaining traction in the healthcare sector, yet expanding the threat of sensitive health information being easily exposed and accessed without authorization. These privacy risks escalate in regions like China, where privacy awareness is notably limited. While some efforts have been devoted to user surveys on LLMs in healthcare, users' perceptions of privacy remain unexplored. To fill this gap, this paper contributes the first user study (n=846) in China on privacy awareness and expectations in LLM-based healthcare consultations. Specifically, a healthcare chatbot is deployed to investigate users' awareness in practice. Information flows grounded in contextual integrity are then employed to measure users' privacy expectations. Our findings suggest that the prevalence of LLMs amplifies health privacy risks by raising users' curiosity and willingness to use such services, thus overshadowing privacy concerns. 77.3% of participants are inclined to use such services, and 72.9% indicate they would adopt the generated advice. Interestingly, a paradoxical “illusion” emerges where users' knowledge and concerns about privacy contradict their privacy expectations, leading to greater health privacy exposure. Our extensive discussion offers insights for future LLM-based healthcare privacy investigations and protection technology development. | 2025 | BlkInfoM: versatile blockchain-based mapping mechanism for secure information transmissionabstractAbstract Information mapping is a widely adopted strategy in information hiding, leveraging the inherent features of carriers to convey hidden information without altering the carrier itself, thus maintaining integrity and avoiding detection. However, current mapping-based techniques face significant challenges, including potential data loss during transmission, limited capacity of carriers like images, and reliance on costly third-party storage solutions. To address these limitations, we introduce BlkInfoM, an innovative algorithm that utilizes blockchain’s decentralized, immutable, and traceable properties as a novel data source for secure information hiding. BlkInfoM leverages blockchain transaction data, such as Merkle hash values, timestamps, and locations, in combination with a reversible ASCII-based binary encoding to enable precise information-to-block matching. Experimental results demonstrate that BlkInfoM not only improves the success rate and efficiency of information mapping compared to traditional methods but also reduces operational costs by eliminating the need for third-party storage. This work highlights the potential of blockchain technology to revolutionize information hiding, offering enhanced security, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. | 2025 | Toward Dynamic Topology Obfuscation for IoT Networks With Evolutionary DefenseabstractTraditional defenses against DDoS and LFAs in IoT networks, such as static network topology obfuscation and traffic engineering, suffer from critical limitations. These include high computational overhead that is incompatible with low-power devices, rigid policies that are vulnerable to evolving attacks, and isolated modules that create exploitable gaps. Accordingly, a new problem setting for IoT network defense is introduced, i.e., dynamic open-world network defense that poses two critical tasks: 1) Open defense, aiming not only to mitigate attacks from known patterns but also to detect and counteract unknown adversarial strategies through real-time traffic analysis and adaptive obfuscation. 2) Dynamic adaptation, aiming to continuously learn new attack types (e.g., novel probing techniques or topology inference methods) without retraining the entire model while preserving robustness against previously encountered threats and avoiding catastrophic forgetting of learned defense policies. To address these problems, we propose OptiPathNet, a unified framework integrating multi-objective evolutionary optimization with dynamic topology obfuscation and real-time traffic analysis. At its core, OptiPathNet leverages two innovations. First is a GCMOEA-based method that dynamically balances security, latency and energy efficiency through Pareto-optimal trade-offs, reducing attackers’ topology inference accuracy while ensuring control packet delays and consumption. Moreover, a synergistic detection-obfuscation framework combining lightweight traffic classification with adaptive obfuscation policies, enabling protocol-compliant noise injection to disrupt both reconnaissance for traceroute-based probing and forensic analysis for timing-based attack traces. Evaluations across IoT scenarios, i.e., smart cities and industrial systems, demonstrate OptiPathNet’s superiority over the state-of-the-art methods. Reduces the structural similarity between the attacker-inferred and real topologies by 43%, while the delay overhead was reduced by 17%, and achieves optimal defense in 95% of the scenarios tested. By transforming IoT’s inherent constraints, including resource limitations and dynamic topologies, into defensive assets, OptiPathNet establishes a scalable, adaptive security paradigm for next-generation networks, bridging the gap between theoretical innovation and practical deployment in resource-constrained environments. | 2025 | CityTrac: Precise Camera Selection and Movement Prediction for Object Tracking in Hyperscale Public Security Camera NetworkabstractUsing hyperscale surveillance cameras, seamless target tracking can be accomplished in urban security scenarios, significantly enhancing public security and emergency response capabilities. In spite of the advantage of edge computing, tracking multiple targets using multiple cameras would incur prohibitive high computation costs. Based on the deployment of real-world cameras, this research finds that existing tracking scheduling is inefficient as a result of redundant and excessive activation of cameras. As a follow-up, the research proposes a hierarchical tracking framework called CityTrac that leverages fine-grained target movement predictions to provide efficient tracking in hyperscale cameras. First, CityTrac uses a specially designed camera selection strategy that ensures accurate tracking with a minimum number of cameras. After that, CityTrac constructs a probabilistic target movement graph by using historical tempo-spatial correlation information. Using the graph as a model, the tracking scheduling and camera selection problem are formulated as an optimization problem with efficiency-accuracy tradeoff constraints. The research addresses this NP-hard problem using greedy optimization. The experiments conducted with the Cityflow and Geolife datasets demonstrate that, compared with two baselines, CityTrac requires significantly fewer computation resources (over 90%) in order to track the same number of targets with the same level of accuracy. | 2025 | ISSD: Indicator Selection for Time Series State DetectionabstractTime series data from monitoring applications captures the behaviours of objects, which can often be split into distinguishable segments that reflect the underlying state changes. Despite the recent advances in time series state detection, the indicator selection for state detection is rarely studied, most of state detection work assumes the input indicators have been properly or manually selected. However, this assumption is disconnected from practice, on one hand, manual selection is not scalable, there can be up to thousands of indicators for the runtime monitoring of certain objects, e.g., supercomputer systems. On the other hand, performing state detection on a large amount of raw indicators is both inefficient and redundant. We argue that indicator selection should be made an upstream task for selecting a subset of indicators to facilitate state analysis. To this end, we propose ISSD ( I ndicator S election for S tate D etection), an indicator selection method for time series state detection. At its core, ISSD attempts to find an indicator subset that has as much high-quality states, which is measured by the channel set completeness and quality we invent based on segment-level sampling statistics. Such an indicator selection process is transformed into a multi-objective optimization problem and an approximation algorithm is designed to solve the NP-hard searching for specific end point in the Pareto front. Experiments on 5 datasets and 4 downstream methods show that ISSD has significant selection superiority compared with 6 baselines. We also elaborate on two observations of selection resilience and channel sensitivity of existing state detection methods and appeal to further research on them. | 2025 | WAGE: Weight-Sharing Attribute-Missing Graph AutoencoderabstractAttribute-missing graph learning, a common yet challenging problem, has recently attracted considerable attention. Existing efforts have at least one of the following limitations: 1) lack a noise filtering and information enhancing scheme, resulting in less comprehensive data completion; 2) isolate the node attribute and graph structure encoding processes, introducing more parameters and failing to take full advantage of the two types of information; and 3) impose overly strict distribution assumptions on the latent variables, leading to biased or less discriminative node representations. To tackle the issues, based on the idea of introducing intimate information interaction between the two information sources, we propose Weight-sharing Attribute-missing Graph autoEncoder (WAGE) to boost the expressive capacity of node representations for high-quality missing attribute reconstruction. Specifically, three strategies have been conducted. Firstly, we entangle the attribute embedding and structure embedding by introducing a weight-sharing architecture to share the parameters learned by both processes, which allows the network training to benefit from more abundant and diverse information. Secondly, we introduce a $K$K-nearest neighbor-based dual non-local learning mechanism to improve the quality of data imputation by revealing unobserved high-confidence connections while filtering unreliable ones. Thirdly, we manually mask the connections on multiple adjacency matrices and force the structure-oriented embedding sub-network to recover the actual adjacency matrix, thus enforcing the resulting network to be able to selectively exploit more high-order discriminative features for data completion. Extensive experiments on six benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of WAGE against state-of-the-art competitors. | 2025 | Split Learning on Segmented Healthcare DataabstractSequential data learning is vital to harnessing the encompassed rich knowledge for diverse downstream tasks, particularly in healthcare (e.g., disease prediction). Considering data sensitiveness, privacy-preserving learning methods, based on federated learning (FL) and split learning (SL), have been widely investigated. Yet, this work identifies, for the first time, existing methods overlook that sequential data are generated by different patients at different times and stored in different hospitals, failing to learn the sequential correlations between different temporal segments. To fill this void, a novel distributed learning frameworkSTSLis proposed by training a model on the segments in order. Considering that patients have different visit sequences,STSLfirst implements privacy-preserving visit ordering based on a secure multi-party computation mechanism. Then batch scheduling participates patients with similar visit (sub-)sequences into the same training batch, facilitating subsequent split learning on batches. The scheduling process is formulated as an NP-hard optimization problem on balancing learning loss and efficiency and a greedy-based solution is presented. Theoretical analysis proves the privacy preservation property ofSTSL. Experimental results on real-world eICU data show its superior performance compared with FL and SL ($5\% \sim 28\%$better accuracy) and effectiveness (a remarkable 75% reduction in communication costs). | 2025 | Mitigating Cross-Modal Retrieval Violations With Privacy-Preserving Backdoor LearningabstractDeep cross-modal retrieval, with its effective and efficient search capabilities, has gained widespread adoption in today’s media-sharing practices yet raises concerns regarding potential threats to user data privacy. The cutting-edge data-centric countermeasures usually adopt adversarial learning, i.e., laboriously crafting the proper perturbation for each image, resulting in the noticeable noise in adversarial examples that greatly undermines the aesthetic appeal of image sharing. To address this issue, we propose a novel Model-centric Cross-modal Privacy-preserving framework (MCP), wherein the pre-defined invisible backdoor is seamlessly integrated into the global retrieval model via backdoor learning, thereby effectively preventing shared images containing such triggers from being retrieved. Specifically, we introduce a simple yet effective cross-modal backdoor learning algorithm that alternately optimizes two losses: 1) a privacy-preserving loss for perturbing retrieval with a user-injected trigger and 2) the standard utility loss for maintaining normal retrieval performance. Compared to state-of-the-art methods, MCP excels in providing excellent stealthiness, manifesting in a notable improvement of approximately 100% in SSIM metrics. Furthermore, it achieves an outstanding privacy-preserving (backdoor) success rate, as evidenced by a substantial mAP reduction of 22.3% (for FashionVC), 11.5% (for NUS-WIDE), and 21.8% (for MIRFlickr-25K) in poisoned retrieval, while maintaining similar normal retrieval performance. Additionally, MCP exhibits robust resistance against potential black-box defenses (e.g., trigger filtering) and white-box defenses (e.g., fine-tuning and model pruning). | 2025 | PPIDM: Privacy-Preserving Inference for Diffusion Model in the CloudabstractCloud environments enhance diffusion model efficiency but introduce privacy risks, including intellectual property theft and data breaches. As AI-generated images gain recognition as copyright-protected works, ensuring their security and intellectual property protection in cloud environments has become a pressing challenge. This paper addresses privacy protection in diffusion model inference under cloud environments, identifying two key characteristics—denoising-encryption antagonism and stepwise generative nature—that create challenges such as incompatibility with traditional encryption, incomplete input parameter representation, and inseparability of the generative process. We propose PPIDM (Privacy-PreservingInference forDiffusionModels), a framework that balances efficiency and privacy by retaining lightweight text encoding and image decoding on the client while offloading computationally intensive U-Net layers to multiple non-colluding cloud servers. Client-side aggregation reduces computational overhead and enhances security. Experiments show PPIDM offloads 67% of Stable Diffusion computations to the cloud, reduces image leakage by 75%, and maintains high output quality (PSNR = 36.9, FID = 4.56), comparable to standard outputs. PPIDM offers a secure and efficient solution for cloud-based diffusion model inference. Zhangdong Wang, Zhihuang Liu, Yuanjing Luo, Tongqing Zhou, Jiaohua Qin, Zhiping Cai

Revisiting Initializing Then Refining: An Incomplete and Missing Graph Imputation NetworkabstractWith the development of various applications, such as recommendation systems and social network analysis, graph data have been ubiquitous in the real world. However, graphs usually suffer from being absent during data collection due to copyright restrictions or privacy-protecting policies. The graph absence could be roughly grouped into attribute-incomplete and attribute-missing cases. Specifically, attribute-incomplete indicates that a portion of the attribute vectors of all nodes are incomplete, while attribute-missing indicates that all attribute vectors of partial nodes are missing. Although various graph imputation methods have been proposed, none of them is custom-designed for a common situation where both types of graph absence exist simultaneously. To fill this gap, we develop a novel graph imputation network termed revisiting initializing then refining (RITR), where both attribute-incomplete and attribute-missing samples are completed under the guidance of a novel initializing-then-refining imputation criterion. Specifically, to complete attribute-incomplete samples, we first initialize the incomplete attributes using Gaussian noise before network learning, and then introduce a structure-attribute consistency constraint to refine incomplete values by approximating a structure-attribute correlation matrix to a high-order structure matrix. To complete attribute-missing samples, we first adopt structure embeddings of attribute-missing samples as the embedding initialization, and then refine these initial values by adaptively aggregating the reliable information of attribute-incomplete samples according to a dynamic affinity structure. To the best of our knowledge, this newly designed method is the first end-to-end unsupervised framework dedicated to handling hybrid-absent graphs. Extensive experiments on six datasets have verified that our methods consistently outperform the existing state-of-the-art competitors. Our source code is available at https://github.com/WxTu/RITR. | 2025 | Sweeping the IPv6 Internet: High-Efficiency Router Interface Discovery With Weighted SamplingabstractAcquiring router interfaces is crucial for network measurement and security assessment. Established methods are readily available for IPv4 systems; however, efficiently pinpointing IPv6 router interfaces remains an unresolved issue, chiefly due to the vast IPv6 address space. Existing practices in this domain commonly suffer from inefficiencies. Thus, it is imperative to propose a methodology for fast enumeration of IPv6 router interfaces on a massive scale. In this study, we introduce Sweeper, a novel asynchronous IPv6 scanner that excels in discovering router interfaces from scratch, from few to many, on large-scale IPv6 networks. Unlike existing approaches, Sweeper requires merely the readily accessible IPv6 prefixes instead of seed addresses and can strategically optimize its probing direction based on a novel weighted sampling algorithm to increase the discovery rate. Real-world tests prove that Sweeper outperforms state-of-the-art works, discovering$33.2\%\sim 48.8\%$more IPv6 router interface addresses than the baselines, with same computational resources. With Sweeper, we have collected approximately 6 million IPv6 router interface addresses from a single vantage point within less than one hour. Tao Yang 0041, Bingnan Hou, Zhiping Cai

Realizing Personalized and Adaptive Inference of AS Paths With a Generative and Measurable ProcessabstractIn the global Internet, understanding paths between autonomous systems (ASes) is valuable for improving the Internet routing system and optimizing various applications. However, due to the business and privacy concerns, only a small portion of paths are disclosed. Moreover, limited by the measurement resources, obtaining paths between any two ASes is impossible. Thus, path inference becomes necessary. Recent work proposes training individual model for each AS to infer paths, but it lacks personalization as it uses a shared approach and data for arbitrary ASes. Moreover, training models from scratch for all the ASes is time-consuming and resource-intensive. This paper introduces Personalized and Adaptive Generative Measurable Path Inference (PA-GMPI), a prefix-grained path inference process. PA-GMPI is capable of achieving superior performance and faster model training by fully leveraging the exclusive information of each AS. These improvements come from a personalized path generator, a 3-layer graph kernel based adaptive training warm-starter, and a real-world walks based AS representation learner. In evaluation, PA-GMPI significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art method, achieving a maximal accuracy improvement of 28.72% and ESR (exact same ratio) improvement of 49.95%. Furthermore, PA-GMPI achieves an average reduction of 20.21% in training resource consumption across over two thousand training sessions, using vantage ASes from five snapshots, which included 439 distinct ASes. To tackle this challenge, we developed6Seeks, an innovative IPv6 scanning system designed for efficient IPv6 periphery discovery across the global IPv6 Internet without requiring seed IPv6 addresses. | 2025 | MetaTrading: An Immersion-Aware Model Trading Framework for Vehicular Metaverse ServicesabstractTimely updating of Internet of Things (IoT) data is crucial for achieving immersion in vehicular metaverse services. However, challenges such as latency caused by massive data transmissions, privacy risks associated with user data, and computational burdens on metaverse service providers (MSPs) hinder the continuous collection of high-quality data. To address these challenges, we propose an immersion-aware model trading framework that enables efficient and privacy-preserving data provisioning through federated learning (FL). Specifically, we first develop a novel multi-dimensional evaluation metric for the immersion of models (IoM). The metric considers i) the freshness and accuracy of the local model, and ii) the amount and potential value of raw training data. Building on the IoM, we design an incentive mechanism to encourage metaverse users (MUs) to participate in FL by providing local updates to MSPs under resource constraints. The trading interactions between MSPs and MUs are modeled as an equilibrium problem with equilibrium constraints (EPEC) to analyze and balance their costs and gains, where MSPs as leaders determine rewards, while MUs as followers optimize resource allocation. To ensure privacy and adapt to dynamic network conditions, we develop a distributed dynamic reward algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning, without acquiring any private information from MUs and other MSPs. Experimental results show that the proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art benchmarks, achieving improvements in IoM of 38.3% and 37.2%, and reductions in training time to reach the target accuracy of 43.5% and 49.8%, on average, for the MNIST and GTSRB datasets, respectively. These findings validate the effectiveness of our approach in incentivizing MUs to contribute high-value local models to MSPs, providing a flexible and adaptive scheme for data provisioning in vehicular metaverse services. | 2024 | Attribute-Missing Graph Clustering NetworkabstractDeep clustering with attribute-missing graphs, where only a subset of nodes possesses complete attributes while those of others are missing, is an important yet challenging topic in various practical applications. It has become a prevalent learning paradigm in existing studies to perform data imputation first and subsequently conduct clustering using the imputed information. However, these ``two-stage" methods disconnect the clustering and imputation processes, preventing the model from effectively learning clustering-friendly graph embedding. Furthermore, they are not tailored for clustering tasks, leading to inferior clustering results. To solve these issues, we propose a novel Attribute-Missing Graph Clustering (AMGC) method to alternately promote clustering and imputation in a unified framework, where we iteratively produce the clustering-enhanced nearest neighbor information to conduct the data imputation process and utilize the imputed information to implicitly refine the clustering distribution through model optimization. Specifically, in the imputation step, we take the learned clustering information as imputation prompts to help each attribute-missing sample gather highly correlated features within its clusters for data completion, such that the intra-class compactness can be improved. Moreover, to support reliable clustering, we maximize inter-class separability by conducting cost-efficient dual non-contrastive learning over the imputed latent features, which in turn promotes greater graph encoding capability for clustering sub-network. Extensive experiments on five datasets have verified the superiority of AMGC against competitors. | 2024 | Text-Based Occluded Person Re-identification via Multi-Granularity Contrastive Consistency LearningabstractText-based Person Re-identification (T-ReID), which aims at retrieving a specific pedestrian image from a collection of images via text-based information, has received significant attention. However, previous research has overlooked a challenging yet practical form of T-ReID: dealing with image galleries mixed with occluded and inconsistent personal visuals, instead of ideal visuals with a full-body and clear view. Its major challenges lay in the insufficiency of benchmark datasets and the enlarged semantic gap incurred by arbitrary occlusions and modality gap between text description and visual representation of the target person. To alleviate these issues, we first design an Occlusion Generator (OGor) for the automatic generation of artificial occluded images from generic surveillance images. Then, a fine-granularity token selection mechanism is proposed to minimize the negative impact of occlusion for robust feature learning, and a novel multi-granularity contrastive consistency alignment framework is designed to leverage intra-/inter-granularity of visual-text representations for semantic alignment of occluded visuals and query texts. Experimental results demonstrate that our method exhibits superior performance. We believe this work could inspire the community to investigate more dedicated designs for implementing T-ReID in real-world scenarios. | 2024 | DiffusionEdge: Diffusion Probabilistic Model for Crisp Edge DetectionabstractLimited by the encoder-decoder architecture, learning-based edge detectors usually have difficulty predicting edge maps that satisfy both correctness and crispness. With the recent success of the diffusion probabilistic model (DPM), we found it is especially suitable for accurate and crisp edge detection since the denoising process is directly applied to the original image size. Therefore, we propose the first diffusion model for the task of general edge detection, which we call DiffusionEdge. To avoid expensive computational resources while retaining the final performance, we apply DPM in the latent space and enable the classic cross-entropy loss which is uncertainty-aware in pixel level to directly optimize the parameters in latent space in a distillation manner. We also adopt a decoupled architecture to speed up the denoising process and propose a corresponding adaptive Fourier filter to adjust the latent features of specific frequencies. With all the technical designs, DiffusionEdge can be stably trained with limited resources, predicting crisp and accurate edge maps with much fewer augmentation strategies. Extensive experiments on four edge detection benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of DiffusionEdge both in correctness and crispness. | 2024 | Efficient IPv6 Router Interface DiscoveryabstractEfficient discovery of router interfaces on the IPv6 Internet is critical for network measurement and cybersecurity. However, existing solutions commonly suffer from inefficiencies due to a lack of initial probing targets (seeds), ultimately exhibiting limitations on large-scale IPv6 networks. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a methodology that enables the efficient collection of IPv6 router interfaces with limited resources, considering the impracticality of conducting a brute-force exploration across the extensive IPv6 address space. In this paper, we introduce Treestrace, an innovative asynchronous prober specifically designed for this purpose. Without prior knowledge of the networks, this tool incrementally adjusts search directions, automatically prioritizing the survey of IPv6 address spaces with a higher concentration of IPv6 router interfaces. Furthermore, we have developed a carefully crafted architecture optimized for probing performance, allowing the tool to probe at the highest theoretically possible rate without requiring excessive computational resources. Real-world tests show that Treestrace outperforms state-of-the-art works on both seed-based and seedless tasks, achieving at least a 5.57-fold efficiency improvement on large-scale IPv6 router interface discovery. With Treestrace, we discovered approximately 8 million IPv6 router interface addresses from a single vantage point within several hours. Tao Yang 0041, Zhiping Cai

Exploring Hierarchical Patterns for Alert Aggregation in SupercomputersabstractAlongside the high performance built on massive hardware, ever-larger computer systems bear tons of hardware alerts every day during reliability maintenance. Based on an exploratory study on a representative supercomputer system, this work first characterizes supercomputer alerts as an overload of continuous bursts for the operators. Yet, existing similarity-based aggregation solutions, tuned for in-band textual alerts, are myopic by finding dissimilar representatives instead of looking into the semantics in the supercomputer context. To fill the void of supercomputer alert aggregation, we propose the SuperAgg framework to extract the hierarchical patterns of real-world alerts and use them for online alert management. SuperAgg jointly integrates unsupervised state detection of time series and expert analysis to successfully discover 4 categories of sensor-tier alert patterns and exploits primary-and-secondary statistics between sensors for system-tier correlation patterns. With such extracted knowledge, SuperAgg then identifies the formulated patterns online and uses spatiotemporal combined strategies to reduce the alert influx. Evaluations on alerts generated from a production supercomputer show that SuperAgg provides over 98% aggregation rate and significantly higher aggregation accuracy (over 83.8% and 43.2% on different datasets) than 3 baselines. | 2024 | One-shot-but-not-degraded Federated LearningabstractTransforming the multi-round vanilla Federated Learning (FL) into one-shot FL (OFL) significantly reduces the communication burden and makes a big leap toward practical deployment. However, we note that existing OFL methods all build on model lossy reconstruction (i.e., aggregating while partially discarding local knowledge in clients' models), which attains one-shot at the cost of degraded inference performance. By identifying the root cause of stressing too much on finding a one-fit-all model, this work proposes a novel one-shot FL framework by embodying each local model as an independent expert and leveraging a Mixture-of-Experts network to maintain all local knowledge intact. A dedicated self-supervised training process is designed to tune the network, where the sample generation is guided by approximating underlying distributions of local data and making distinct predictions among experts. Notably, the framework also fuels FL with flexible, data-free aggregation and heterogeneity tolerance. Experiments on 4 datasets show that the proposed framework maintains the one-shot efficiency, facilitates superior performance compared with 8 OFL baselines (+5.54% on CIFAR-10), and even attains over ×4 performance gain compared with 3 multi-round FL methods, while only requiring less than 85% trainable parameters. | 2024 | DRL-Tomo: a deep reinforcement learning-based approach to augmented data generation for network tomographyabstractAbstract Accurate and current comprehension of network status is crucial for efficient network management. Nevertheless, direct network measurement strategies entail substantial traffic overhead and demand intricate coordination among network entities, making them impractical. Network tomography, an indirect measurement approach, utilizes insights garnered from measured parts to deduce characteristics of the entire network. Past studies frequently depend on acquiring challenging-to-access information, such as the complete network topology or support from specialized protocols. Unfortunately, these constraints pose challenges in non-cooperative scenarios where obtaining such information is difficult. Recent endeavors pursue emancipating tomography from dependence on copious information, striving to predict unmeasured path performance using limited data. Nevertheless, the disparity between the measured data and actual performance has hindered the accuracy. In response, we introduce an innovative tomography framework named DRL-Tomo, designed to alleviate potential biases. DRL-Tomo initiates by generating augmented data through deep reinforcement learning, gradually approximating the genuine performance of unmeasured paths. Subsequently, a neural network model is trained using this augmented data, enabling precise inferences. Our experiments, encompassing both real-world and synthetic datasets, vividly demonstrate DRL-Tomo’s remarkable enhancement. Specifically, it achieves a substantial 10%–67% improvement in path delay prediction and an impressive 30%–98% enhancement in path loss rate prediction. | 2024 | A Sketch Framework for Fast, Accurate and Fine-Grained Analysis of Application TrafficabstractAbstract Nowadays, with the continuous increase in internet traffic, the demand for real-time and high-speed traffic analysis has grown significantly. A promising approach is to utilize sketch technology to enhance real-time traffic analysis. Unfortunately, existing technologies suffer from defects, such as overly coarse-grained statistics that cannot perform precise application-level traffic analysis, and irreversibility, which cannot support real-time queries in a friendly way. To achieve real-time fine-grained application traffic analysis in general scenarios, we propose AppSketch, a real-time network traffic measurement tool. AppSketch adopts a one-pass approach to classify and label the application information of each packet in the network flows. It then hashes the flow, identified with the application tag, into a carefully designed multiple-key sketch, for gathering application-specific statistics. We conducted extensive experiments using a real-world network traffic dataset collected on a university campus. The results showed that AppSketch achieved high accuracy while requiring less update time than other alternatives. Moreover, AppSketch occupies limited memory ($ {\leq }$64KB), making it suitable for online network devices. Changsheng Hou, Chunbo Jia, Bingnan Hou, Tongqing Zhou, Yingwen Chen 0001, Zhiping Cai

DGA domain embedding with deep metric learningabstractAbstract Botnets currently use domain-generation algorithms to produce fast-flux domains that enable them to evade detection. Accurately categorizing these botnet domains is crucial to develop cybersecurity solutions against botnet threats. However, existing methods, requiring labeled data, are ineffective against new botnets. To address this issue, we propose Domain2Vec, a metric learning-based approach that can explore new botnets. Domain2Vec integrates a framework of metric learning, which uses individual domains from known botnets for categorization of unknown botnet domains. The training involves an attention-based encoder, and it includes a constraint to ensure that samples with the same labels are closer in the embedding space. The categorization uses the encoder to project domain names into appropriate representations (numerical vectors), even for domains from new botnets. Finally, Domain2Vec uses numerical vectors to explore botnets. Experiments showed that Domain2Vec performs well on domain retrieval and clustering tasks without labeled data, outperforming the state of the art by 13% and 100%, respectively. Real-world tests demonstrate that Domain2Vec can effectively identify unreported malicious domains and monitor botnet activities. | 2024 | Blockchain and trusted reputation assessment-based incentive mechanism for healthcare servicesabstractBlockchain-based healthcare IoT technology research enhances security for smart healthcare services such as real-time monitoring and remote disease diagnosis. To incentivize positive behavior among participants within a blockchain-based smart healthcare system, existing efforts employ benefit distribution and reputation assessment methods to enhance performance. Yet, there remains a significant gap in multidimensional assessment strategies and consensus improvements in addressing complex healthcare scenarios. In this paper, we propose a blockchain and trusted reputation assessment-based incentive mechanism for healthcare services (BtRaI). BtRaI provides a realistic and comprehensive reputation assessment with feedback to motivate blockchain consensus node participation, thus effectively defending against malicious behavior in the healthcare service system. Specifically, BtRaI first introduces multiple moderation factors for comprehensive multidimensional reputation assessment and credibly records the assessment results on the blockchain. Then, we propose an improved PBFT algorithm, grounded in the reputation assessment, to augment blockchain consensus efficiency. Finally, BtRaI designs a token-based reward and punishment mechanism to motivate honest participation in the blockchain, inhibit potential misbehavior, and promote enhanced service quality in the healthcare system. Theoretical analysis and simulation experiments conducted across various scenarios demonstrate that BtRaI effectively suppresses malicious attacks in healthcare services , improves blockchain node fault tolerance rates, and achieves blockchain transaction processing efficiency within 0.5 s in a 100-node consortium chain. BtRaI’s reputation assessment and token incentive mechanism, characterized by realistic differentiation granularity and change curves, are well-suited for dynamic and complex healthcare service environments. | 2024 | Multidocument Aspect Classification for Aspect-Based Abstractive SummarizationabstractMultidocument aspect-based summarization (AspSumm) aims to generate focused summaries based on the target aspects from a cluster of relevant documents. Generating such summaries can better satisfy readers’ specific points of interest, as readers may have different concerns about the same articles. However, previous methods usually generate aspect-based summaries based on the given aspects without using the relationship among aspects to assist in the summarization. In this work, we propose a two-stage general framework for multidocument AspSumm. The model first discovers the latent relationship among aspects and then uses relevant sentences selected by aspect discovery to generate abstractive summaries. We exploit latent dependencies among aspects using a tag mask training (TMT) strategy, which increases the interpretability of the model. In addition to improvements in summarization over aspect-based strong baselines, experimental results show that our proposed model can accurately discover multidomain aspects on the WikiAsp dataset. | 2024 | Fixing the Double Agent Vulnerability of Deep Watermarking: A Patch-Level Solution Against Artwork PlagiarismabstractIncreasing artwork plagiarism incidents stresses the urgent need for proper copyright protection on behalf of the creators. The latest development in this context focuses on embedding watermarks via deep encoder-decoder networks. However, we find that deep watermarking has a serious vulnerability on its robustness when facing deliberate plagiarism. To manifest it, we construct an attack that misuses watermarking encoder as a plagiarism lookout for bypassing copyright detection. As a remedy, we propose a patch-level deep watermarking framework (DIPW) to retain copyright evidence in essential patches with plagiarism resistance, inspired by a user study observation that subject elements in artworks are the principal plagiarism entities. Technically, DIPW adaptively finds the embedding patches by identifying a subset of non-overlapping and feature-rich objects; and tailors the model with dual-distortion losses and adversarial plagiarism noise injection for robustness. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of DIPW in facilitating better robustness, secrecy, and imperceptibility with acceptable time burden. | 2024 | SeCoSe: Toward Searchable and Communicable Healthcare Service Seeking in Flexible and Secure EHR SharingabstractCloud-assisted electronic health record (EHR) sharing plays an important role in modern healthcare systems but faces threats of distrust and non-traceability. The advent of blockchain offers an attractive solution to overcome this issue. Many efforts are devoted to promoting secure, flexible, and multi-featured blockchain-based EHR sharing. Yet, the problem of seeking out suitable healthcare providers and communicating information beyond the EHR has unfortunately been ignored. In this paper, we propose SeCoSe, a novel EHR sharing scheme to address these concerns. SeCoSe enables patients and their general practitioners to autonomously seek out and stay in touch with their preferred healthcare professionals. Specifically, a searchable and repeatable transformation identity-based encryption (SRTIBE) is proposed to achieve dynamic and flexible authorization updates. Moreover, we design attribute-identity mapping contracts and evidence-based contracts on the blockchain to enable on-demand retrieval of anonymous identities and ensure tamper resistance and traceability of system transactions. Furthermore, we employ the advanced messages on-chain protocol (AMOP) to facilitate the online communication of off-chain messages. Detailed security analysis and extensive evaluations demonstrate that SeCoSe is privacy-secure, traceable, and attack-resistant. SeCoSe has lower overhead for repeated authorization and transformation, on-chain transactions can be responded to within seconds, and online communication can handle the transmission of 49,000 messages in about 6 seconds. | 2024 | RARE: Robust Masked Graph AutoencoderabstractMasked graph autoencoder (MGAE) has emerged as a promising self-supervised graph pre-training (SGP) paradigm due to its simplicity and effectiveness. However, existing efforts perform the mask-then-reconstruct operation in the raw data space as is done in computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP) areas, while neglecting the important non-Euclidean property of graph data. As a result, the highly unstable local structures largely increase the uncertainty in inferring masked data and decrease the reliability of the exploited self-supervision signals, leading to inferior representations for downstream evaluations. To address this issue, we propose a novel SGP method termed Robust mAsked gRaph autoEncoder (RARE) to improve the certainty in inferring masked data and the reliability of the self-supervision mechanism by further masking and reconstructing node samples in the high-order latent feature space. Through both theoretical and empirical analyses, we have discovered that performing a joint mask-then-reconstruct strategy in both latent feature and raw data spaces could yield improved stability and performance. To this end, we elaborately design a masked latent feature completion scheme, which predicts latent features of masked nodes under the guidance of high-order sample correlations that are hard to be observed from the raw data perspective. Specifically, we first adopt a latent feature predictor to predict the masked latent features from the visible ones. Next, we encode the raw data of masked samples with a momentum graph encoder and subsequently employ the resulting representations to improve the predicted results through latent feature matching. Extensive experiments on seventeen datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness and robustness of RARE against state-of-the-art (SOTA) competitors across three downstream tasks. | 2024 | FedSH: Towards Privacy-Preserving Text-Based Person Re-IdentificationabstractText-based person re-identification (ReID) has enabled canonical applications in searching for and tracking targets from large-scale surveillance images with textual descriptions. Yet, existing text-based person ReID systems employ centralized model training that gathers images captured by different institutes' cameras into one place, which poses severe privacy threats to sensitive institutional information. This work is then devoted to exploring privacy-preserving text-based person ReID and proposes the framework of FedSH by tailoring the federated learning paradigm for distributed searching knowledge extraction. Specifically, FedSH resolves the local model generalization and entity boundary obscuring limitations, caused by inner-institute data homogeneity and inter-institute data heterogeneity, via building multi-granularity feature representation and a semantically self-aligned network. Meanwhile, it reduces the communication burden introduced by the embedding for multiple modals by updating common representation subspaces during federated learning. Experimental results on two public benchmarks demonstrate that our method can achieve at most 16.47% and 16.02% person ReID performance improvement by the Rank-1 metric, compared with 6 State-of-The-Art (SoTA) baselines and 6 ablation studies. We believe that our work will inspire the community to investigate the potential of implementing Federated Learning in real-world image retrieval and ReID scenarios. | 2024 | Query-Adaptive Late Fusion for Hierarchical Fine-Grained Video-Text RetrievalabstractRecently, a hierarchical fine-grained fusion mechanism has been proved effective in cross-modal retrieval between videos and texts. Generally, the hierarchical fine-grained semantic representations (video-text semantic matching is decomposed into three levels including global-event representation matching, action-relation representation matching, and local-entity representation matching) to be fused can work well by themselves for the query. However, in real-world scenarios and applications, existing methods failed to adaptively estimate the effectiveness of multiple levels of the semantic representations for a given query in advance of multilevel fusion, resulting in a worse performance than expected. As a result, it is extremely essential to identify the effectiveness of hierarchical semantic representations in a query-adaptive manner. To this end, this article proposes an effective query-adaptive multilevel fusion (QAMF) model based on manipulating multiple similarity scores between the hierarchical visual and text representations. First, we decompose video-side and text-side representations into hierarchical semantic representations consisting of global-event level, action-relation level, and local-entity level, respectively. Then, the multilevel representation of the video-text pair is aligned to calculate the similarity score for each level. Meanwhile, the sorted similarity score curves of the good semantic representation are different from the inferior ones, which exhibit a "cliff" shape and gradually decline (see Fig. fig1 as an example). Finally, we leverage the Gaussian decay function to fit the tail of the score curve and calculate the area under the normalized sorted similarity curve as the indicator of semantic representation effectiveness, namely, the area of good semantic representation is small, and vice versa. Extensive experiments on three public benchmark video-text datasets have demonstrated that our method consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art (SoTA). | 2024 | Hierarchically Contrastive Hard Sample Mining for Graph Self-Supervised PretrainingabstractContrastive learning has recently emerged as a powerful technique for graph self-supervised pretraining (GSP). By maximizing the mutual information (MI) between a positive sample pair, the network is forced to extract discriminative information from graphs to generate high-quality sample representations. However, we observe that, in the process of MI maximization (Infomax), the existing contrastive GSP algorithms suffer from at least one of the following problems: 1) treat all samples equally during optimization and 2) fall into a single contrasting pattern within the graph. Consequently, the vast number of well-categorized samples overwhelms the representation learning process, and limited information is accumulated, thus deteriorating the learning capability of the network. To solve these issues, in this article, by fusing the information from different views and conducting hard sample mining in a hierarchically contrastive manner, we propose a novel GSP algorithm called hierarchically contrastive hard sample mining (HCHSM). The hierarchical property of this algorithm is manifested in two aspects. First, according to the results of multilevel MI estimation in different views, the MI-based hard sample selection (MHSS) module keeps filtering the easy nodes and drives the network to focus more on hard nodes. Second, to collect more comprehensive information for hard sample learning, we introduce a hierarchically contrastive scheme to sequentially force the learned node representations to involve multilevel intrinsic graph features. In this way, as the contrastive granularity goes finer, the complementary information from different levels can be uniformly encoded to boost the discrimination of hard samples and enhance the quality of the learned graph embedding. Extensive experiments on seven benchmark datasets indicate that the HCHSM performs better than other competitors on node classification and node clustering tasks. | 2024 | STEdge: Self-Training Edge Detection With Multilayer Teaching and RegularizationabstractLearning-based edge detection has hereunto been strongly supervised with pixel-wise annotations which are tedious to obtain manually. We study the problem of self-training edge detection, leveraging the untapped wealth of large-scale unlabeled image datasets. We design a self-supervised framework with multilayer regularization and self-teaching. In particular, we impose a consistency regularization which enforces the outputs from each of the multiple layers to be consistent for the input image and its perturbed counterpart. We adopt L0-smoothing as the "perturbation" to encourage edge prediction lying on salient boundaries following the cluster assumption in self-supervised learning. Meanwhile, the network is trained with multilayer supervision by pseudo labels which are initialized with Canny edges and then iteratively refined by the network as the training proceeds. The regularization and self-teaching together attain a good balance of precision and recall, leading to a significant performance boost over supervised methods, with lightweight refinement on the target dataset. Through extensive experiments, our method demonstrates strong cross-dataset generality and can improve the original performance of edge detectors after self-training and fine-tuning. However, some crucial problems are not fully analyzed yet, especially for the compatibility with binary applications. | 2023 | NEF: Neural Edge Fields for 3D Parametric Curve Reconstruction from Multi-View ImagesabstractWe study the problem of reconstructing 3D feature curves of an object from a set of calibrated multi-view images. To do so, we learn a neural implicit field representing the density distribution of 3D edges which we refer to as Neural Edge Field (NEF). Inspired by NeRF [20], NEF is optimized with a view-based rendering loss where a 2D edge map is rendered at a given view and is compared to the ground-truth edge map extracted from the image of that view. The rendering-based differentiable optimization of NEF fully exploits 2D edge detection, without needing a supervision of 3D edges, a 3D geometric operator or cross-view edge correspondence. Several technical designs are devised to ensure learning a range-limited and view-independent NEF for robust edge extraction. The final parametric 3D curves are extracted from NEF with an iterative optimization method. On our benchmark with synthetic data, we demonstrate that NEF outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods on all metrics. Project page: https://yunfan1202.github.io/NEF/. | 2023 | Efficient Personalized Federated Learning on Selective Model TrainingabstractPersonalized Federated Learning (FL) handles the data heterogeneous problem by tailoring local models for each distributed data owner. Previous studies first train a highly-adaptable global model and then transfer it for personalization. However, the additional training aggravates burden of resource-limited end devices. Training a personalized local sub-network is a promising efficient solution. It normally prunes the global model by parameters’ scalar magnitude. In this paper, we found that the vector magnitude, i.e. the parameter stability, could further promote personalized FL. Driven by the local data characteristics, the values of some model parameters are hardly changed in their updates. But they consume the same resources as the changed ones. Thus, we propose Star-PFL, a STability-AwaRe algorithm for efficient FL Personalization. In Star-PFL, the data owner focuses on training non-stabilized parameters, and decreases the resource wastes on stabilized ones. Experimental results on two real-world biomedical datasets demonstrate that Star-PFL improves the accuracy (3.1%↑) and decreases the resource costs (communication 36.3%↓, computation 18.3%↓) than 5 typical baselines. | 2023 | Tracking Targets in Hyper-Scale Cameras Using Movement PredicationabstractHyper-scale surveillance cameras have enabled seamless target (e.g., vehicles, individuals) tracking in urban scenarios, significantly improving everyday safety and emergency response capacity. However, practically tracking multiple targets among cameras would incur prohibitive huge computation costs, even with the acceleration utility of edge computing. This work observes with real-world camera deployment that existing tracking scheduling is unfortunately inefficient due to the redundant and over-activation of cameras. We then propose the design of a hierarchical tracking framework HyMOT that exploits fine-grained target movement prediction for efficient tracking in hyper-scale cameras. At its core, HyMOT builds a probabilistic target movement graph with tempo-spatial correlation knowledge extracted from historical statistics. With the graph, we formulate tracking scheduling as an optimization problem with efficiency-accuracy tradeoff constraints and solve this NP-hard problem with a greedy strategy. Experiments based on the Cityflow and Geolife datasets demonstrate that, compared with two baselines, Hy-MOT requires significantly less (over 90%) computation workloads to track the same amount of targets with similar accuracy. | 2023 | Consensus One-step Multi-view Subspace Clustering (Extended abstract)abstractMulti-view clustering has attracted increasing attention in data mining communities. Despite superior clustering performance, we observe that existing multi-view subspace clustering methods directly fuse multi-view information in the similarity level by merging noisy affinity matrices; and isolate the processes of affinity learning, multiple information fusion and clustering. Both factors may cause insufficient utilization of multi-view information, leading to unsatisfying clustering performance. This paper proposes a novel consensus one-step multi-view subspace clustering (COMVSC) method to address these issues. Instead of directly fusing affinity matrices, COMVSC optimally integrates discriminative partition-level information, which is helpful in eliminating noise among data. Moreover, the affinity matrices, consensus representation and final clustering labels are learned simultaneously in a unified framework. | 2023 | Search in the Expanse: Towards Active and Global IPv6 HitlistsabstractGlobal-scale IPv6 scan, critical for network measurement and management, is still a mission to be accomplished due to its vast address space. To tackle this challenge, IPv6 scan generally leverages pre-defined seed addresses to guide search directions. Under this general principle, however, the core problem of effectively using the seeds is largely open. In this work, we propose a novel IPv6 active search strategy, namely HMap6, which significantly improves the use of seeds, w.r.t. the marginal benefit, for large-scale active address discovery in various prefixes. Using a heuristic search strategy for efficient seed collection and alias prefix detection under a wide range of BGP prefixes, HMap6 can greatly expand the scan coverage. Real-world experiments over the Internet in billion-scale scans show that HMap6 can discover 29.39M unique /80 prefixes with active addresses, an 11.88% improvement over the state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, the IPv6 hitlists from HMap6 include all-responsive IPv6 addresses with rich information. This result sharply differs from existing public IPv6 hitlists, which contain non-responsive and filtered addresses, and pushes the IPv6 hitlists from quantity to quality. To encourage and benefit further IPv6 measurement studies, we released our tool along with our IPv6 hitlists and the detected alias prefixes. | 2023 | IRWArt: Levering Watermarking Performance for Protecting High-quality Artwork ImagesabstractIncreasing artwork plagiarism incidents underscores the urgent need for reliable copyright protection for high-quality artwork images. Although watermarking is helpful to this issue, existing methods are limited in imperceptibility and robustness. To provide high-level protection for valuable artwork images, we propose a novel invisible robust watermarking framework, dubbed as IRWArt. In our architecture, the embedding and recovery of the watermark are treated as a pair of image transformations’ inverse problems, and can be implemented through the forward and backward processes of an invertible neural networks (INN), respectively. For high visual quality, we embed the watermark in high-frequency domains with minimal impact on artwork and supervise image reconstruction using a human visual system(HVS)-consistent deep perceptual loss. For strong plagiarism-resistant, we construct a quality enhancement module for the embedded image against possible distortions caused by plagiarism actions. | 2023 | From Eye to Brain: A Proactive and Distributed Crowdsensing Framework for Federated LearningabstractMassive amounts of high-quality data are the prerequisite and support for AI technologies. Due to the nature of privacy-preserving and low communication overheads, federated learning (FL) has garnered considerable attention in comparison with traditional data collection methods. However, the performance of FL is hampered by the lack of interested clients and limited local data due to selfishness and individual behavioral preferences. To this end, we propose PractFL, a proactive and distributed framework that incorporates the concept of mobile crowdsensing into the FL paradigm. Specifically, we design an incentive mechanism in the form of virtual red packets, which are a widely used way of monetary reward and gift-giving in social lives. In this article we extend this further by giving meaning to the locations, i.e., the red packets are only accessible at specific places. The virtual red packets’ locations and monetary amounts can be dynamically updated by the cloud center to encourage clients to collect additional data that may benefit the FL process. Further, we propose a distributed behavioral decision engine based on multiarmed bandits (i.e., choose which red packet to go for) in response to the incentive mechanism enforced by the cloud. Considering the movement cost and conflicts with other clients,$K$-anonymity and probabilistic selection are introduced in the distributed behavioral decision to recommend the optimal red packet choice for clients without revealing their privacy. The experimental results demonstrate that PractFL outperforms the baselines in terms of classification accuracy. We also find that PractFL can effectively alleviate the overfitting problem caused by class imbalance during the training. Tongqing Zhou, Zhiping Cai, Zehui Xiong, Dusit Niyato, Zhu Han 0001

Time2State: An Unsupervised Framework for Inferring the Latent States in Time Series DataabstractTime series data from monitoring applications reflect the physical or logical states of the objects, which may produce time series of distinguishable characteristics in different states. Thus, time series data can usually be split into different segments, each reflecting a state of the objects. These states carry rich high-level semantic information, e.g., run, walk, or jump, which helps people better understand the behaviour of the monitored objects. Nevertheless, these states are latent and hard to discover, because the characteristic of time series is complicated and the computational cost is high. This paper develops an efficient and effective unsupervised approach for inferring the latent states of massive multivariate time data. To reduce the computational cost, we present Time2State, a scalable framework that utilizes a sliding window and an encoder to greatly reduce the length of raw time series. To train the encoder, we propose a novel unsupervised loss function, LSE-Loss. Extensive experiments show that compared to the state-of-the-art time series representation learning methods of the same kind, LSE-Loss brings a performance improvement of up to 15% in accuracy. | 2023 | RayMVSNet++: Learning Ray-Based 1D Implicit Fields for Accurate Multi-View StereoabstractLearning-based multi-view stereo (MVS) has by far centered around 3D convolution on cost volumes. Due to the high computation and memory consumption of 3D CNN, the resolution of output depth is often considerably limited. Different from most existing works dedicated to adaptive refinement of cost volumes, we opt to directly optimize the depth value along each camera ray, mimicking the range (depth) finding of a laser scanner. This reduces the MVS problem to ray-based depth optimization which is much more light-weight than full cost volume optimization. In particular, we propose RayMVSNet which learns sequential prediction of a 1D implicit field along each camera ray with the zero-crossing point indicating scene depth. This sequential modeling, conducted based on transformer features, essentially learns the epipolar line search in traditional multi-view stereo. We devise a multi-task learning for better optimization convergence and depth accuracy. We found the monotonicity property of the SDFs along each ray greatly benefits the depth estimation. Our method ranks top on both the DTU and the Tanks & Temples datasets over all previous learning-based methods, achieving an overall reconstruction score of 0.33 mm on DTU and an F-score of 59.48% on Tanks & Temples. It is able to produce high-quality depth estimation and point cloud reconstruction in challenging scenarios such as objects/scenes with non-textured surface, severe occlusion, and highly varying depth range. Further, we propose RayMVSNet++ to enhance contextual feature aggregation for each ray through designing an attentional gating unit to select semantically relevant neighboring rays within the local frustum around that ray. This improves the performance on datasets with more challenging examples (e.g., low-quality images caused by poor lighting conditions or motion blur). RayMVSNet++ achieves state-of-the-art performance on the ScanNet dataset. In particular, it attains an AbsRel of 0.058m and produces accurate results on the two subsets of textureless regions and large depth variation. Junhua Xi, Dewen Hu, Zhiping Cai, Kai Xu 0004

A Game-Based Incentive-Driven Offloading Framework for Dispersed ComputingabstractThe popularization of smart Internet of Things (IoT) devices has facilitated the development of fog/edge computing. However, these infrastructure-based service paradigms may fail to complete tasks successfully due to computation and communication overload, or damage in challenging scenarios such as disasters or traffic jams. Noticing that a crowd of devices with considerable idle resources could be available, we investigate the problems of addressing the computation and communication unavailability with peer assistance in this work. To this end, we propose a dispersed service framework for resource-exhausted scenarios that adaptively offloads users’ data to available network computation points. However, the users may not be able to achieve the offloading due to geographical hindrances. Consequently, the relay is introduced as a bridge for data offloading between the users and the network computation points. Furthermore, a game-based incentive-driven offloading mechanism is designed by analyzing and balancing the cost and gain factors of three main entities (users, relays, and network computation points). Considering the interactions among the entities, a two-level Stackelberg game is established for efficiently allocating potential computation resource, as well as balancing the utility conflicts due to the data offloading. Given the hierarchical interaction structure, the upper level game involves network computation points as followers and the relay as a leader, while the lower level game includes the relay as a follower and users as leaders. Moreover, to facilitate applicability in large-scale scenarios with multiple relays, we decompose multiple relays into multiple single relay problems using a tripartite matching strategy that assigns appropriate relays to users and network computation points. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed game-based incentive-driven mechanism and show that it outperforms the baselines in terms of the overall utilities of the involved entities and the average energy consumption of users. Many existing efforts tend to learn a common semantic representation embedding space in which items of different modalities can be directly compared, wherein the positive global representations of video-text pairs are pulled close while the negative ones are pushed apart via pair-wise ranking loss. However, such a vanilla loss would unfortunately yield ambiguous feature embeddings for texts of different videos, causing inaccurate cross-modal matching and unreliable retrievals. Toward this end, we propose a multimodal contrastive knowledge distillation method for instance video-text retrieval, called MCKD, by adaptively using the general knowledge of self-supervised model (teacher) to calibrate mixed boundaries. Specifically, the teacher model is tailored for robust (less-ambiguous) visual-text joint semantic space by maximizing mutual information of co-occurred modalities during multimodal contrastive learning. This robust and structural inter-instance knowledge is then distilled, with the help of explicit discrimination loss, to a student model for improved matching performance. Extensive experiments on four public benchmark video-text datasets (MSR-VTT, TGIF, VATEX, and Youtube2Text) demonstrate that our MCKD can achieve at most 8.8%, 6.4%, 5.9%, and 5.3% improvement in text-to-video performance by the$\text{R}\text{@}1$metric, compared with 14 SoTA baselines. | 2023 | Video Anomaly Detection via Visual Cloze TestsabstractAlthough great progress has been sparked in video anomaly detection (VAD) by deep neural networks (DNNs), existing solutions still fall short in two aspects: (1) The extraction of video events cannot be both precise and comprehensive. (2) The semantics and temporal context are under-explored. To tackle above issues, we are inspired by cloze tests in language education and propose a novel approach namedVisual Cloze Completion(VCC), which conducts VAD by completingvisual cloze tests(VCTs). Specifically, VCC first localizes each video event and encloses it into a spatio-temporal cube (STC). To realize both precise and comprehensive event extraction, appearance and motion are used as complementary cues to mark the object region associated with each event. For each marked region, a normalized patch sequence is extracted from several neighboring frames and stacked into a STC. With each patch and the patch sequence of a STC regarded as a visual “word” and “sentence” respectively, we deliberately erase a certain “word” (patch) to yield a VCT. Then, the VCT is completed by training DNNs to infer the erased patch and its optical flow via video semantics. Meanwhile, VCC fully exploits temporal context by alternatively erasing each patch in temporal context and creating multiple VCTs. Furthermore, we propose localization-level, event-level, model-level and decision-level solutions to enhance VCC, which can further exploit VCC’s potential and produce significant VAD performance improvement. Extensive experiments demonstrate that VCC achieves highly competitive VAD performance. Siqi Wang 0001, Zhiping Cai, Xinwang Liu 0002, En Zhu, Jianping Yin

Inspecting End-to-End Encrypted Communication Differentially for the Efficient Identification of Harmful MediaabstractDue to the immense benefits of guaranteeing user privacy, popular messaging platforms have shown enthusiasm for deploying End-to-End Encryption (E2EE). However, E2EE could be misused for bypassing media moderation, opening a shortcut for the viral spreading of harmful media. Private hash-matching techniques are proposed to identify harmful content in E2EE. Unfortunately, the pioneering solution incurs prohibitively high latency due to redundant user-cloud interactions for a private inspection. In this paper, we designEntbergenfor efficient inspection of E2EE media by differentially handling harmless and harmful ingredients. For this, a novel Private-2D BloOm filter with Fuzzy Query (PBO-FQ) is designed for local, agile, and private media hash matching. It is proposed as the first structure that adapts inverted index and differential privacy (DP) towards seamless integration of sketch and mask encoding. With PBO-FQ,Entbergencan instantly filter out harmless media and only pays attention to the small-scale counterparts by scrutinizing them privately based on homomorphic encryption. Security analysis shows thatEntbergencan effectively fulfil the desired privacy requirements. Extensive evaluations demonstrate thatEntbergenis sufficiently efficient (w.r.t. computation and communication overhead) for working on mobile devices and can easily scale to real-world inspection with a large database. | 2023 | Delving Into Crispness: Guided Label Refinement for Crisp Edge DetectionabstractLearning-based edge detection usually suffers from predicting thick edges. Through extensive quantitative study with a new edge crispness measure, we find that noisy human-labeled edges are the main cause of thick predictions. Based on this observation, we advocate that more attention should be paid on label quality than on model design to achieve crisp edge detection. To this end, we propose an effective Canny-guided refinement of human-labeled edges whose result can be used to train crisp edge detectors. Essentially, it seeks for a subset of over-detected Canny edges that best align human labels. We show that several existing edge detectors can be turned into a crisp edge detector through training on our refined edge maps. Experiments demonstrate that deep models trained with refined edges achieve significant performance boost of crispness from 17.4% to 30.6%. With the PiDiNet backbone, our method improves ODS and OIS by 12.2% and 12.6% on the Multicue dataset, respectively, without relying on non-maximal suppression. We further conduct experiments and show the superiority of our crisp edge detection for optical flow estimation and image segmentation. Yunfan Ye, Renjiao Yi, Zhirui Gao, Zhiping Cai, Kai Xu 0004

In Pursuit of Beauty: Aesthetic-Aware and Context-Adaptive Photo Selection in CrowdsensingabstractThe pervasive view of the mobile crowd bridges various real-world scenes and people's perceptions with the gathering of distributed crowdsensing photos. To elaborate informative visuals for viewers, existing techniques introduce photo selection as an essential step in crowdsensing. Yet, the aesthetic preference of viewers, at the very heart of their experiences under various crowdsensing contexts (e.g., travel planning), is seldom considered and hardly guaranteed. We propose CrowdPicker, a novel photo selection framework with adaptive aesthetic awareness for crowdsensing. With the observations on aesthetic uncertainty and bias in different crowdsensing contexts, we exploit a joint effort of mobile crowdsourcing and domain adaptation to actively learn contextual knowledge for dynamically tailoring the aesthetic predictor. Concretely, an aesthetic utility measure is invented based on the probabilistic balance formalization to quantify the benefit of photos in improving the adaptation performance. We prove the NP-hardness of sampling the best-utility photos for crowdsourcing annotation and present a (1-1/e) approximate solution. Furthermore, a two-stage distillation-based adaptation architecture is designed based on fusing contextual and common aesthetic preferences. Extensive experiments on three datasets and four raw models demonstrate the performance superiority of CrowdPicker over four photo selection baselines and four typical sampling strategies. Cross-dataset evaluation illustrates the impacts of aesthetic bias on selection. Tongqing Zhou, Zhiping Cai, Fang Liu 0002, Jinshu Su

Dynamic Modeling Cross-Modal Interactions in Two-Phase Prediction for Entity-Relation ExtractionabstractJoint extraction of entities and their relations benefits from the close interaction between named entities and their relation information. Therefore, how to effectively model such cross-modal interactions is critical for the final performance. Previous works have used simple methods, such as label-feature concatenation, to perform coarse-grained semantic fusion among cross-modal instances but fail to capture fine-grained correlations over token and label spaces, resulting in insufficient interactions. In this article, we propose a dynamic cross-modal attention network (CMAN) for joint entity and relation extraction. The network is carefully constructed by stacking multiple attention units in depth to dynamic model dense interactions over token-label spaces, in which two basic attention units and a novel two-phase prediction are proposed to explicitly capture fine-grained correlations across different modalities (e.g., token-to-token and label-to-token). Experiment results on the CoNLL04 dataset show that our model obtains state-of-the-art results by achieving 91.72% F1 on entity recognition and 73.46% F1 on relation classification. In the ADE and DREC datasets, our model surpasses existing approaches by more than 2.1% and 2.54% F1 on relation classification. Extensive analyses further confirm the effectiveness of our approach. | 2023 | Enhancing Chinese Character Representation With Lattice-Aligned AttentionabstractWord-character lattice models have been proved to be effective for some Chinese natural language processing (NLP) tasks, in which word boundary information is fused into character sequences. However, due to the inherently unidirectional sequential nature, prior approaches have only learned sequential interactions of character-word instances but fail to capture fine-grained correlations in word-character spaces. In this article, we propose a lattice-aligned attention network (LAN) that aims to model dense interactions over word-character lattice structure for enhancing character representations. By carefully combining cross-lattice module, gated word-character semantic fusion unit, and self-lattice attention module, the network can explicitly capture fine-grained correlations across different spaces (e.g., word-to-character and character-to-character), thus significantly improving model performance. Experimental results on three Chinese NLP benchmark tasks demonstrate that LAN obtains state-of-the-art results compared to several competitive approaches. | 2023 | 6Scan: A High-Efficiency Dynamic Internet-Wide IPv6 Scanner With Regional EncodingabstractEfficient Internet-wide scanning plays a vital role in network measurement and cybersecurity analysis. While Internet-wide IPv4 scanning is a solved problem, Internet-wide scanning for IPv6 is still a mission yet to be accomplished due to its vast address space. To tackle this challenge, IPv6 scanning generally needs to use pre-defined seed addresses to guide further IPv6 scanning directions. Under this general principle, various solutions have been developed, but all suffer from two primary pitfalls, low hit rate and low probing speed, caused by the inherent sparse distribution of active IPv6 addresses and the high computational complexity of the search algorithms, respectively. We develop 6Scan, a novel asynchronous IPv6 scanner that effectively addresses the above two problems. To increase the hit rate, 6Scan infers the promising search directions by encoding the regional identifiers of the target addresses within the probing packets and recording the regional activities from the asynchronously arrived replies. It then dynamically adjusts the search directions according to the scanning result of the previous steps. To speed up the search algorithm, 6Scan leverages the regional identifier encoding to quickly adjust search direction without excessive computation. Real-world experiments over the IPv6 Internet in a billion-scale probing budget show that compared with the state-of-the-art solutions, on average 6Scan can discover 6% more active addresses with nearly the same scanning time. | 2023 | Realizing Fine-Grained Inference of AS Path With a Generative Measurable ProcessabstractIn the global Internet, the paths between two autonomous systems (ASes), which are used for the exchange of traffic, are essential for understanding the behavior of the Internet routing system and they can help improve the performance of many applications of the Internet. Popular approaches to obtain the AS path between an AS pair (AP) are measurement based (e.g., Traceroute), but considering the size of the modern Internet and the limitations of measurement resources, only paths between a very small portion of APs can be measured. In recent years, a large body of path inference approaches has been proposed to bridge the gap in measurement resources. However, as we show with experiments, they perform poorly in accuracy and coverage. We propose a generative measurable path inference (GMPI) framework for AS-level path measurement, which performs well in accuracy and coverage. GMPI addresses two limitations of previous approaches: 1) Information incompleteness due to unrevealed real-world AS-level routing policies and insufficient measuring resources. 2) Knowledge isolation caused by distributed AS knowledge with different sources and inconsistent forms. To overcome these challenges, the data-driven GMPI framework invents heuristic path generation to address incompleteness and a dual-attention network to integrate the isolated knowledge. GMPI does not perform any measurement or impose any burden on the network. Our performance evaluation shows that our framework GMPI outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in terms of accuracy and coverage. In particular, compared to the state-of-the-art stitching-based baseline, GMPI provides a 42.45% improvement in coverage and a 39.97% improvement in accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate that GMPI can accurately infer paths for nearly arbitrary APs. Xionglve Li, Tongqing Zhou, Zhiping Cai, Jinshu Su

Privacy vs. Efficiency: Achieving Both Through Adaptive Hierarchical Federated LearningabstractAs a decentralized training paradigm, Federated learning (FL) promises data privacy by exchanging model parameters instead of raw local data. However, it is still impeded by the resource limitations of end devices and privacy risks from the ‘curious’ cloud. Yet, existing work predominately ignores that these two issues are non-orthogonal in nature. In this article, we propose a joint design (i.e., AHFL) that accommodates both the efficiency expectation and privacy protection of clients towards high inference accuracy. Based on a cloud-edge-end hierarchical FL framework, we carefully offload the training burden of devices to one proximate edge for enhanced efficiency and apply a two-level differential privacy mechanism for privacy protection. To resolve the conflicts of dynamical resource consumption and privacy risk accumulation, we formulate an optimization problem for choosing configurations under correlated learning parameters (e.g., iterations) and privacy control factors (e.g., noise intensity). An adaptive algorithmic solution is presented based on performance-oriented resource scheduling, budget-aware device selection, and adaptive local noise injection. Extensive evaluations are performed on three different data distribution cases of two real-world datasets, using both a networked prototype and large-scale simulations. Experimental results show that AHFL relieves the end's resource burden (w.r.t. computation time 8.58%$\downarrow$, communication time 59.35%$\downarrow$and memory consumption 43.61%$\downarrow$) and has better accuracy (6.34%$\uparrow$) than 3 typical baselines under the limited resource and privacy budgets. | 2022 | Characterizing and Detecting Non-Consensual Photo Sharing on Social NetworksabstractPhoto capturing and sharing have become routine daily activities for social platform users. Alongside the entertainment of social interaction, we are experiencing tremendous visual violation and photo abusing. Especially, users may be unconsciously filmed and exposed online, which is termed as the non-consensual sharing issue. Unfortunately, this problem cannot be well handled with proactive access control or dedicated bystander detection, as users are unaware of their situations and may be filmed stealthily. We propose Videre on behalf of the privacy of the unaware parties in a way that they would be automatically identified and warned before such photos go public. For this, we first elaborate on the predominant features encountered in non-consensual captured photos via a thorough user study. Then we establish a dataset for this context and build a classifier as a proactive detector based on multi-deep-feature fusion. To relieve the burden of person-wise unawareness detection, we further design a signature-based filter for local pre-authorization, which can also implicitly avoid classification errors. We implement and test Videre in various field settings to demonstrate its effectiveness and performance. Tengfei Zheng, Tongqing Zhou, Qiang Liu 0004, Kui Wu 0001, Zhiping Cai

Deep Anomaly Discovery from Unlabeled Videos via Normality Advantage and Self-Paced RefinementabstractWhile classic video anomaly detection (VAD) requires labeled normal videos for training, emerging unsupervised VAD (UVAD) aims to discover anomalies directly from fully unlabeled videos. However, existing UVAD methods still rely on shallow models to perform detection or initialization, and they are evidently inferior to classic VAD methods. This paper proposes a full deep neural network (DNN) based solution that can realize highly effective UVAD. First, we, for the first time, point out that deep reconstruction can be surprisingly effective for UVAD, which inspires us to unveil a property named “normality advantage”, i.e., normal events will enjoy lower reconstruction loss when DNN learns to reconstruct unlabeled videos. With this property, we propose Localization based Reconstruction (LBR) as a strong UVAD baseline and a solid foundation of our solution. Second, we propose a novel self-paced refinement (SPR) scheme, which is synthesized into LBR to conduct UVAD. Unlike ordinary self-paced learning that injects more samples in an easy-to-hard manner, the proposed SPR scheme gradually drops samples so that suspicious anomalies can be removed from the learning process. In this way, SPR consolidates normality advantage and enables better UVAD in a more proactive way. Finally, we further design a variant solution that explicitly takes the motion cues into account. The solution evidently enhances the UVAD performance, and it sometimes even surpasses the best classic VAD methods. Experiments show that our solution not only significantly outperforms existing UVAD methods by a wide margin (5% to 9% AUROC), but also enables UVAD to catch up with the mainstream performance of classic VAD. | 2022 | Discovering Truth in Mobile Crowdsensing with Differential Location PrivacyabstractThe combination of Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) and truth discovery has benefited the ubiquitous monitoring and analysis of the physical world. To address the concerns alongside user data collection, the literature has partially studied data privacy protection for truth discovery. Yet, the threats of location leakage remain overlooked in such contexts. For joint accommodating privacy protection and truth elaboration, we propose to leverage differential privacy for distributed user location obfuscation and explore spatial correlation for corresponding observation's value calibration. We form this process into a truth estimation deviation minimization problem under differential privacy and obfuscation requirements. By theoretically transforming it into probabilistic calibration residual optimization, the problem can be solved via linear programming. Evaluation on real-world temperature and humid sensing data shows its effectiveness on providing significant location distortion distance and practically acceptable time consumption. Results also reveal an up to 53% truth discovery accuracy improvement compared to the SCP baseline. Tongqing Zhou, Zhiping Cai, Jingshu Su

Detecting Anomalous Events from Unlabeled Videos via Temporal Masked Auto-EncodingabstractUnsupervised video anomaly detection (UVAD) intends to discern anomalous events from fully unlabeled videos. However, existing UVAD methods suffer from poor performance. Inspired by recent masked autoencoder (MAE) [1], we propose Temporal Masked Auto-Encoding (TMAE) as an effective end-to-end UVAD method. Specifically, we first denote video events by spatial-temporal cubes (STCs), which are built by temporally consecutive foreground patches from unlabeled videos. Then, half of patches in an STC are masked along the temporal dimension, while a vision transformer (ViT) is trained to exploit unmasked patches to predict masked patches. The rare and unusual nature of anomaly will result in a poorer prediction for anomalous events, which enables us to discriminate anomalies from unlabeled videos and compute the anomaly scores. Furthermore, to utilize motion clues in videos, we also propose to apply TMAE on optical flow, which can further boost performance. Experiments show that TMAE significantly outperforms existing UVAD methods by a notable margin (3.9%–6.6% AUC). Jingtao Hu, Siqi Wang 0001, En Zhu, Zhiping Cai, Xinzhong Zhu

Initializing Then Refining: A Simple Graph Attribute Imputation NetworkabstractRepresentation learning on the attribute-missing graphs, whose connection information is complete while the attribute information of some nodes is missing, is an important yet challenging task. To impute the missing attributes, existing methods isolate the learning processes of attribute and structure information embeddings, and force both resultant representations to align with a common in-discriminative normal distribution, leading to inaccurate imputation. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel graph-oriented imputation framework called initializing then refining (ITR), where we first employ the structure information for initial imputation, and then leverage observed attribute and structure information to adaptively refine the imputed latent variables. Specifically, we first adopt the structure embeddings of attribute-missing samples as the embedding initialization, and then refine these initial values by aggregating the reliable and informative embeddings of attribute-observed samples according to the affinity structure. Specially, in our refining process, the affinity structure is adaptively updated through iterations by calculating the sample-wise correlations upon the recomposed embeddings. | 2022 | 6Forest: An Ensemble Learning-based Approach to Target Generation for Internet-wide IPv6 ScanningabstractIPv6 target generation is the critical step for fast IPv6 scanning for Internet-wide surveys. Existing techniques, however, commonly suffer from low hit rates due to inappropriate space partition caused by the outlier addresses and short-sighted splitting indicators. To address the problem, we propose 6Forest, an ensemble learning-based approach for IPv6 target generation that is from a global perspective and resilient to outlier addresses. Given a set of known addresses, 6Forest first considers it as an initial address region and then iteratively divides the IPv6 address space into smaller regions using a maximum-covering splitting indicator. Before a round of space partition, it builds a forest structure for each region and exploits an enhanced isolation forest algorithm to remove the outlier addresses. Finally, it pre-scans samples from the divided address regions and based on the results generates IPv6 addresses. Experiments on eight large-scale candidate datasets indicate that, compared with the state-of-the-art methods in IPv6 worldwide scanning, 6Forest can achieve up to 116.5% improvement for low-budget scanning and 15× improvement for high-budget scanning. | 2022 | Opportunistic Backdoor Attacks: Exploring Human-imperceptible Vulnerabilities on Speech Recognition SystemsabstractSpeech recognition systems, trained and updated based on large-scale audio data, are vulnerable to backdoor attacks that inject dedicated triggers in system training. The used triggers are generally human-inaudible audio, such as ultrasonic waves. However, we note that such a design is not feasible, as it can be easily filtered out via pre-processing. In this work, we propose the first audible backdoor attack paradigm for speech recognition, characterized by passively triggering and opportunistically invoking. Traditional device-synthetic triggers are replaced with ambient noise in daily scenarios. For adapting triggers to the application dynamics of speech interaction, we exploit the observed knowledge inherited from the context to a trained model and accommodate the injection and poisoning with certainty-based trigger selection, performance-oblivious sample binding, and trigger late-augmentation. Experiments on two datasets under various environments evaluate the proposal's effectiveness in maintaining a high benign rate and facilitating outstanding attack success rate (99.27%, ~4% higher than BadNets), robustness (bounded infectious triggers), feasibility in real-world scenarios. It requires less than 1% data to be poisoned and is demonstrated to be able to resist typical speech enhancement techniques and general countermeasures (e.g., dedicated fine-tuning). | 2022 | Effective Video Abnormal Event Detection by Learning A Consistency-Aware High-Level Feature ExtractorabstractWith pure normal training videos, video abnormal event detection (VAD) aims to build a normality model, and then detect abnormal events that deviate from this model. Despite of some progress, existing VAD methods typically train the normality model by a low-level learning objective (e.g. pixel-wise reconstruction/prediction), which often overlooks the high-level semantics in videos. To better exploit high-level semantics for VAD, we propose a novel paradigm that performs VAD by learning a Consistency-Aware high-level Feature Extractor (CAFE). Specifically, with a pre-trained deep neural network (DNN) as teacher network, we first feed raw video events into the teacher network and extract the outputs of multiple hidden layers as their high-level features, which contain rich high-level semantics. Guided by high-level features extracted from normal training videos, we train a student network to be the high-level feature extractor of normal events, so as to explicitly consider high-level semantics in training. For inference, a video event can be viewed as normal if the student extractor produces similar high-level features to the teacher network. Second, based on the fact that consecutive video frames usually enjoy minor differences, we propose a consistency-aware scheme that requires high-level features extracted from neighboring frames to be consistent. Our consistency-aware scheme not only encourages the student extractor to ignore low-level differences and capture more high-level semantics, but also enables better anomaly scoring. Last, we also design a generic framework that can bridge high-level and low-level learning in VAD to further ameliorate VAD performance. By flexibly embedding one or more low-level learning objectives into CAFE, the framework makes it possible to combine the strengths of both high-level and low-level learning. | 2022 | Never Too Late: Tracing and Mitigating Backdoor Attacks in Federated LearningabstractThe privacy-preserving nature of Federated Learning (FL) exposes such a distributed learning paradigm to the planting of backdoors with locally corrupted data. We discover that FL backdoors, under a new on-off multi-shot attack form, are essentially stealthy against existing defenses that are built on model statistics and spectral analysis. First-hand observations of such attacks show that the backdoored models are indistinguishable from normal ones w.r.t. both low-level and high-level representations. We thus emphasize that a critical redemption, if not the only, for the tricky stealthiness is reactive tracing and posterior mitigation. A three-step remedy framework is then proposed by exploring the temporal and inferential correlations of models on a trapped sample from an attack. In particular, we use shift ensemble detection and co-occurrence analysis for adversary identification, and repair the model via malicious ingredients removal under theoretical error guarantee. Extensive experiments on various backdoor settings demonstrate that our framework can achieve accuracy on attack round identification of ∼80% and on attackers of ∼50%, which are ∼28.76% better than existing proactive defenses. Meanwhile, it can successfully eliminate the influence of backdoors with only a 5%∼6% performance drop. Tongqing Zhou, Zhiping Cai

PARA: Performability-aware resource allocation on the edges for cloud-native servicesabstractThis paper explores resource allocation strategy in the Baidu Over The Edge system to enable mobile edge computing (MEC) datacenters to effectively support cloud-native services downstream to the network edge. There are many challenges to this issue. First, MEC datacenters are resource-constrained to fully meet resource demands. Second, previous works regard the resource requirements of each service as an indivisible unit, resulting in idle MEC resources, even if the resources can meet the demands of some microservices decoupled by the service. Third, they are confined to optimize the allocation for a single slot, failing to adapt to the dynamic demands. To improve resource utilization, we propose performability-aware resource allocation (PARA), a PARA on the edges for cloud-native services. It takes microservices as the unit of resource allocation and allows services to perform with degraded services when only part of microservices' demands are met. It also considers dependency among microservices, dynamic resource requirements, and resource supply characteristics of MEC and cloud. Performability is a unified performance-reliability measure for evaluating such degradable systems. To maximize the long-term overall performability, we model the resource optimization problem and then develop an online greedy heuristic algorithm. The algorithm predicts services' resource demands and then adapts the online allocation. The experimental results show that PARA reduces the reallocation overhead by 47.7%–53.6%, and improves the long-term overall performability by 23.14%–43.25% of existing state-of-the-art works. | 2022 | EviChain: A scalable blockchain for accountable intelligent surveillance systemsabstractSmart cameras, as typical IoT devices, are widely adopted to provide surveillance on individuals, homes, and the environment. The unavoidably captured sensitive visuals via these cameras may raise significant security concerns, while the prevalent software defects and authentication misconfiguration issues aggravate the vulnerability of such devices. However, traditional cryptography techniques are inadequate to provide full protection of these devices due to the large computation overhead. In this context, realizing accountability for these surveillance systems shall be the last line of defense in the presence of fast-evolving and high-influential threats. We propose EviChain, a scalable blockchain-based solution to trace the operations on intelligent surveillance cameras and reserve the evidence for any misuse in tamper-proofing manipulation records. Building a blockchain over the distributed cameras is challenging due to the limited capacity of on-board memory. To tackle this challenge, we design a cooperative mechanism that enables cameras to adaptively join in groups and share storage for recording blocks. | 2022 | Multi-View Spectral Clustering With High-Order Optimal Neighborhood Laplacian MatrixabstractMulti-view spectral clustering can effectively reveal the intrinsic cluster structure among data by performing clustering on the learned optimal embedding across views. Though demonstrating promising performance in various applications, most of existing methods usually linearly combine a group of pre-specified first-order Laplacian matrices to construct the optimal Laplacian matrix, which may result in limited representation capability and insufficient information exploitation. Also, storing and implementing complex operations on the{$n\times n}$Laplacian matrices incurs intensive storage and computation complexity. To address these issues, this paper first proposes a multi-view spectral clustering algorithm that learns a high-order optimal neighborhood Laplacian matrix, and then extends it to the late fusion version for accurate and efficient multi-view clustering. Specifically, our proposed algorithm generates the optimal Laplacian matrix by searching the neighborhood of the linear combination of both the first-order and high-order base Laplacian matrices simultaneously. By this way, the representative capacity of the learned optimal Laplacian matrix is enhanced, which is helpful to better utilize the hidden high-order connection information among data, leading to improved clustering performance. | 2022 | Consensus One-Step Multi-View Subspace ClusteringabstractMulti-view clustering has attracted increasing attention in multimedia, machine learning and data mining communities. As one kind of the essential multi-view clustering algorithm, multi-view subspace clustering (MVSC) becomes more and more popular due to its strong ability to reveal the intrinsic low dimensional clustering structure hidden across views. Despite superior clustering performance in various applications, we observe that existing MVSC methodsdirectly fuse multi-view information in the similarity level by merging noisy affinity matrices; andisolate the processes of affinity learning, multi-view information fusion and clustering. Both factors may cause insufficient utilization of multi-view information, leading to unsatisfying clustering performance. This paper proposes a novel consensus one-step multi-view subspace clustering (COMVSC) method to address these issues. Instead of directly fusing multiple affinity matrices, COMVSC optimally integrates discriminative partition-level information, which is helpful to eliminate noise among data. Moreover, the affinity matrices, consensus representation and final clustering labels matrix are learned simultaneously in a unified framework. By doing so, the three steps can negotiate with each other to best serve the clustering task, leading to improved performance. Accordingly, we propose an iterative algorithm to solve the resulting optimization problem. Extensive experiment results on benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method against other state-of-the-art approaches. | 2022 | TSAGen: Synthetic Time Series Generation for KPI Anomaly DetectionabstractA key performance indicator (KPI) consists of critical time series data that reflect the runtime states of network systems (e.g., response time and available bandwidth). Despite the importance of KPI, datasets for KPI anomaly detection available to the public are very limited, due to privacy concerns and the high overhead in manually labelling the data. The insufficiency of public KPI data poses a great barrier for network researchers and practitioners to evaluate and test what-if scenarios in the development of artificial intelligence for IT operations (AIOps) and anomaly detection algorithms. To tackle the difficulty, we develop a univariate time series generation tool called TSAGen, which can generate KPI data with anomalies and controllable characteristics for KPI anomaly detection. Experiment results show that the data generated by TSAGen can be used for comprehensive evaluation of anomaly detection algorithms with diverse user-defined what-if scenarios. | 2021 | Dynamic Modeling Cross- and Self-Lattice Attention Network for Chinese NERabstractWord-character lattice models have been proved to be effective for Chinese named entity recognition (NER), in which word boundary information is fused into character sequences for enhancing character representations. However, prior approaches have only used simple methods such as feature concatenation or position encoding to integrate word-character lattice information, but fail to capture fine-grained correlations in word-character spaces. In this paper, we propose DCSAN, a Dynamic Cross- and Self-lattice Attention Network that aims to model dense interactions over word-character lattice structure for Chinese NER. By carefully combining cross-lattice and self-lattice attention modules with gated word-character semantic fusion unit, the network can explicitly capture fine-grained correlations across different spaces (e.g., word-to-character and character-to-character), thus significantly improving model performance. Experiments on four Chinese NER datasets show that DCSAN obtains stateof-the-art results as well as efficiency compared to several competitive approaches. | 2021 | Deep Fusion Clustering NetworkabstractDeep clustering is a fundamental yet challenging task for data analysis. Recently we witness a strong tendency of combining autoencoder and graph neural networks to exploit structure information for clustering performance enhancement. However, we observe that existing literature 1) lacks a dynamic fusion mechanism to selectively integrate and refine the information of graph structure and node attributes for consensus representation learning; 2) fails to extract information from both sides for robust target distribution (i.e., “groundtruth” soft labels) generation. To tackle the above issues, we propose a Deep Fusion Clustering Network (DFCN). Specifically, in our network, an interdependency learning-based Structure and Attribute Information Fusion (SAIF) module is proposed to explicitly merge the representations learned by an autoencoder and a graph autoencoder for consensus representation learning. Also, a reliable target distribution generation measure and a triplet self-supervision strategy, which facilitate cross-modality information exploitation, are designed for network training. Extensive experiments on six benchmark datasets have demonstrated that the proposed DFCN consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art deep clustering methods. | 2021 | FedCav: Contribution-aware Model Aggregation on Distributed Heterogeneous Data in Federated LearningabstractThe emerging federated learning (FL) paradigm allows multiple distributed devices to cooperatively train models in parallel with the raw data retained locally. The local-computed parameters will be transferred to a centralized server for aggregation. However, the vanilla aggregation method ignores the heterogeneity of the distributed data, which may lead to slow convergence and low training efficiency. Yet, existing data scheduling and improved aggregation methods either incur privacy concerns or fail to consider the fine-grained heterogeneity. We propose FedCav, a contribution-aware model aggregation algorithm that differentiates the merit of local updates and explicitly favors the model-informed contributions. The intuition is that the local data showing higher inference loss is likely to facilitate better performance improvement. To this end, we design a novel global loss function with explicit optimization preference on informative local updates, theoretically prove its convex property, and use it to regulate the gradient descent process iteratively. Additionally, we propose to identify abnormal updates with fake loss by auditing historic local training statistics. The results of extensive experiments demonstrate that FedCav needs fewer training rounds (~34%) for convergence and achieves better inference accuracy (~2.4%) than the baselines (i.e., FedAvg and FedProx). We also observe that FedCav can actively mitigate the model replacement attacks with agile recovery capability towards the aggregation. Tongqing Zhou, Yeting Guo, Zhiping Cai, Fang Liu 0002

6Hit: A Reinforcement Learning-based Approach to Target Generation for Internet-wide IPv6 ScanningabstractFast Internet-wide network measurement plays an important role in cybersecurity analysis and network asset detection. The vast address space of IPv6, however, makes it infeasible to apply a brute-force approach for scanning the entire network. Even worse, the extremely uneven distribution of IPv6 active addresses results in a low hit rate for active scanning. To address the problem, we propose 6Hit, a reinforcement learning-based target generation method for active address discovery in the IPv6 address space. It first divides the IPv6 address space into different regions according to the structural information of a set of known seed addresses. Then, it allocates exploration resources according to the reward of the scanning on each region. Based on the evaluative feedback from existing scanning results, 6Hit optimizes the subsequent search direction to regions that have a higher density of activity addresses. Compared with other state-of-the-art target generation methods, 6Hit achieves better performance on hit rate. Our experiments over real-world networks show that 6Hit achieves 3.5% - 11.5% hit rate for the eight candidate datasets, which is 7.7% - 630% improvement over the state-of-the-art methods. | 2021 | Leveraging blockchain for cross-institution data sharing and authentication in mobile healthcareabstractThe rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) has promoted the wide adoption of mobile medical devices, which monitor patients’ body conditions in real-time. The collected health-related data are highly sensitive, requiring careful protection during the accessing and transmission for specialized analysis. Yet, existing efforts either rely on centralized authentication for the numerous end devices or are designed to be partially distributed for a closed institution, both lacking scalability for mobile healthcare scenarios. In this paper, we propose HealthTrust that provides a generalized and flexible authentication scheme for distributed medical devices in the cross-institution context. With blockchain as the building block, HealthTrust jointly exploits smart contracts and secure authentication to attain controlled transmission and secure exchanging of healthcare data between institutions. We have implemented the system functions with a prototype based on Ethereum. Experimental results and safety analysis demonstrate that HealthTrust can well satisfy both the safety and feasibility requirements. Le Lai, Tongqing Zhou, Zhiping Cai, Jiaping Yu, Jinhua Cui 0002

2prong: Adaptive Video Streaming with DNN and MPCabstractAdaptive bitrate (ABR) algorithms are often used to optimize the quality of user experience (QoE) during video playback. In the client-side video player, the buffer size and predicted throughput are mainly used to improve user's QoE. However, due to the randomness of mobile network traffic and the heavy-tail effect of the network, it is very difficult to predict throughput. We innovatively use Bayesian neural network to dynamically evaluate video signals. Unlike previous neural network solutions, we use probability distributions instead of point estimates to predict throughput, which can effectively evaluate QoE metrics. Our contributions are to first (i) use of Bayesian neural network to guide video adaptive bitrate adaptation, and then (ii) propose a bitrate adaptive algorithm denoted 2prong, which utilizes high-dimensional contextual information such as buffer occupancy, predicted throughput and video quality to find the most valuable information for quality adaption in real time. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the 2prong algorithm using a simulation testbed. By comparing with other methods, it is demonstrated that 2prong can improve the video quality of video streaming transmission. | 2021 | SmartStore: A blockchain and clustering based intelligent edge storage system with fairness and resilienceabstractWith the development of edge computing, edge storage solutions are attracting widespread attention. When facing the requirements of lower latency and faster access speed from end devices, edge storage solutions are considered to be an alternative to the cloud. However, edges are usually owned by small organizations which have limited operations and maintenance capabilities. This makes these edge devices can be easily disabled by external attacks or internal hardware failures. Besides, the heterogeneity of the edge devices will also make it difficult to price the edge resources uniformly. To tackle these problems, we propose SmartStore: an auction mechanism based on blockchain to allocate edge resources. Considering centralized solutions have access bottlenecks and trust issues, we built SmartStore on the smart contract. With Bayesian game theory, SmartStore can analyze how data owners (DO) and edges price the resources can maximize their benefits. From an economic perspective, both DO and edges can make full use of edge heterogeneous resources with SmartStore. Besides, a two-stage submission strategy is proposed to complete the sealed auction. Furthermore, considering the reliability of edge storage, we propose a cluster-based block distribution algorithm for SmartStore's intelligent edge recommendation process. SmartStore ensures the reliability of edge storage while maximizing the benefits and resource utilization of both parties. Finally, we conduct specific experiments on the proposed auction smart contract through “Ethereum” and the experimental results of implementation show the effectiveness and efficiency of our SmartStore. | 2021 | Trusted audit with untrusted auditors: A decentralized data integrity Crowdauditing approach based on blockchainabstractEdge computing emerges as an alternative to cloud computing in the scenarios where the end devices require lower latency and faster access speeds. Edge nodes are deployed at the proximity of the end devices to reduce response time. On the other hand, the edge nodes are usually owned by small organizations that have limited operations and maintenance capabilities. Data on the edge may be easily damaged, due to external attacks or internal hardware failures. Therefore, it is essential to verify data integrity in edge computing. However, edge environment requires a different trust model compared with other computing and storage paradigm. Besides, compared with cloud storage, edge storage is decentralized and storage service participants may pose greater internal and external threats. This paper proposes a blockchain-based intelligent crowdsourcing audit approach (Crowdauditing) to achieve on-chain and off-chain credibility of audit results. The model relies on an untrusted auditor committee from the crowd to audit data integrity and uses smart contracts as the core of the intelligent system to ensure the reliability of result submission, the accuracy of the result judgment, and reasonable punishments and rewards. Specifically, an unbiased selection algorithm is proposed to achieve fairness during the auditor committee construction. An innovative two-stage submission strategy is proposed to ensure that the auditor committee can reach a consensus on the off-chain audit results. An incentive mechanism is carefully designed to force auditors providing audit services honestly to maximize their own rewards. Moreover, we modeled that as a game of n players, which proves the reliability of the result. Finally, we implement a prototype of Crowdauditing based on smart contracts. | 2021 | Resolving Multitask Competition for Constrained Resources in Dispersed Computing: A Bilateral Matching GameabstractWith the explosive emergence of computation-intensive and latency-sensitive applications, data processing could be envisioned to perform closer to the data source. Similar to edge and fog computing, dispersed computing is considered as a complementary computing paradigm, which can excavate potential computation resources in the network to users, and serve as a supplement for sharing the computational burden when the edge is overloaded. In this article, we first make full use of idle and geographically dispersed computation resources via task offloading, contributing to conserve energy for mobile devices. Especially, a dispersed computing offloading framework concerning the interests of users and networked computation points is proposed. We further transform the initial problem into a multiobjective optimization problem subject to latency and resource constraints. To tackle such a complex problem, an energy-saving bilateral matching algorithm is designed to obtain the optimal task offloading strategy. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm can outperform the benchmark schemes in terms of user fairness and can achieve a relatively balanced energy cost ratio. Furthermore, comparative experiments with edge computing are implemented in Amber Response and Disaster Relief scenarios, respectively, to reveal the advantages of the proposed framework. | 2021 | Centipede: Leveraging the Distributed Camera Crowd for Cooperative Video Data StorageabstractSurveillance cameras have been extensively used in smart cities and high security zones. However, with the exploding deployment of smart cameras, the rapid growth of cloud workloads from vision-based IoT applications are becoming a huge burden for all cloud service providers. Some researchers have proposed mechanisms, such as compression and deduplication to reduce the video traffic size, but these methods cannot offset the enormous growth of data volume. Most of the surveillance video data do not need to be proceeded in real time. By making use of the IoT camera’s onboard resources to store the data, the cloud workloads can be fundamentally reduced. However, recent incidents have posed a new, powerful geo-range attack, where the attacker may compromise a group of surveillance cameras located within an area. Existing simple onboard solutions cannot offer secure defense against such geo-range attacks. | 2021 | A Utility Model for Photo Selection in Mobile CrowdsensingabstractExisting mobile photo crowdsensing approaches focus on the participant-to-server photo pre-selection, i.e., reducing the photo redundancy from participants to a server. The server may still receive plenty of photos for a target area. Yet, another important problem is to select a proper photo subset of an area from the server to a requester. This is a challenging problem because the selected subset with a small size should attain both coverage on the PoIs - Points of Interest (i.e., photo coverage of the area) and quality on the views (i.e., view quality). In this paper, we propose a novel and generic server-to-requester photo selection approach even when there are neither photo shooting direction information nor reference photos. A utility model is designed to measure photo merits of coverage and quality by exploiting photos' spatial distribution and visual representativeness. We present two photo selection schemes, basic and PoI number-aware, to maximize the photo selection utility with multiple levels of granularity. Experimental results on real-world datasets show that our basic scheme outperforms the baselines by an average of 33% and 18.7% on photo coverage and view quality, respectively. Our PoI number-aware scheme can yield an additionally 44.8 percent improvement on the photo coverage performance. Tongqing Zhou, Bin Xiao 0001, Zhiping Cai, Ming Xu 0002

Detection and Characterization of Network Anomalies in Large-Scale RTT Time SeriesabstractNetwork anomalies, such as wide-area congestion and packet loss, can seriously degrade network performance. To this end, it is critical to accurately identify network anomalies on end-to-end paths for high quality network services in practice. In this work, we propose an unsupervised two-step method for the detection and characterization of general network anomalies. It first finds the change-points in large-scale RTT time series by formalizing an optimization problem in terms of data series segmentation. Then we mark the segments as normal or abnormal on different sides of a change-point through exploitation of their distribution statistics. After detecting an anomaly, a further step is introduced to analyze the relations between links with state changes and localize the entities (nodes or links) that most likely cause the corresponding event. We believe such unsupervised and light-weighed method can provide valuable insights on anomaly mining in large-scale time series data. Extensive experiments on both simulated (artificial time series with ground truth) and real-network (RIPE Atlas traceroute measurements) datasets are performed. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better performance, w.r.t. accuracy and efficiency, than existing solutions. | 2021 | RepNet: Cutting Latency with Flow Replication in Data Center NetworksabstractData center networks need to provide low latency, especially at the tail, as demanded by many interactive applications. To improve tail latency, existing approaches require modifications to switch hardware and/or end-host operating systems, making them difficult to be deployed. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of RepNet, an application layer transport that can be deployed today. RepNet exploits the fact that only a few paths among many are congested at any moment in the network, and applies simple flow replication to mice flows to opportunistically use the less congested path. RepNet has two designs for flow replication: (1) RepSYN, which only replicates SYN packets and uses the first connection that finishes TCP handshaking for data transmission, and (2) RepFlow which replicates the entire mice flow. We implement RepNet on node.js, one of the most commonly used platforms for networked interactive applications. node's single threaded event-loop and non-blocking I/O make flow replication highly efficient. Performance evaluation on a real network testbed and in Mininet reveals that RepNet is able to reduce the tail latency of mice flows, as well as application completion times, by more than 50 percent. | 2020 | FEEL: A Federated Edge Learning System for Efficient and Privacy-Preserving Mobile HealthcareabstractWith the prosperity of artificial intelligence, neural networks have been increasingly applied in healthcare for a variety of tasks for medical diagnosis and disease prevention. Mobile wearable devices, widely adopted by hospitals and health organizations, serve as emerging sources of medical data and participate in the training of neural network models for accurate model inference. Since the medical data are privacy-sensitive and non-shareable, federated learning has been proposed to train a model across decentralized data, which involves each mobile device running a training task with its own data in parallel. However, due to the ever-increasing size and complexity of modern neural network models, it becomes inefficient, and may even infeasible, to perform training tasks on wearable devices that are resource-constrained. In this paper, we propose a FEderated Edge Learning system, FEEL, for efficient privacy-preserving mobile healthcare. Specifically, we design an edge-based training task offloading strategy to improve the training efficiency. Further, we build our system on the basis of federated learning to make use of distributed user data to improve the inference performance. A prototype system has been implemented to evaluate the training efficiency, inference performance and noise sensitivity, respectively. | 2020 | Modeling Dense Cross-Modal Interactions for Joint Entity-Relation ExtractionabstractJoint extraction of entities and their relations benefits from the close interaction between named entities and their relation information. Therefore, how to effectively model such cross-modal interactions is critical for the final performance. Previous works have used simple methods such as label-feature concatenation to perform coarse-grained semantic fusion among cross-modal instances, but fail to capture fine-grained correlations over token and label spaces, resulting in insufficient interactions. In this paper, we propose a deep Cross-Modal Attention Network (CMAN) for joint entity and relation extraction. The network is carefully constructed by stacking multiple attention units in depth to fully model dense interactions over token-label spaces, in which two basic attention units are proposed to explicitly capture fine-grained correlations across different modalities (e.g., token-to-token and labelto-token). Experiment results on CoNLL04 dataset show that our model obtains state-of-the-art results by achieving 90.62% F1 on entity recognition and 72.97% F1 on relation classification. In ADE dataset, our model surpasses existing approaches by more than 1.9% F1 on relation classification. Extensive analyses further confirm the effectiveness of our approach. | 2020 | Cloze Test Helps: Effective Video Anomaly Detection via Learning to Complete Video EventsabstractAs a vital topic in media content interpretation, video anomaly detection (VAD) has made fruitful progress via deep neural network (DNN). However, existing methods usually follow a reconstruction or frame prediction routine. They suffer from two gaps: (1) They cannot localize video activities in a both precise and comprehensive manner. (2) They lack sufficient abilities to utilize high-level semantics and temporal context information. Inspired by frequently-used cloze test in language study, we propose a brand-new VAD solution named Video Event Completion (VEC) to bridge gaps above: First, we propose a novel pipeline to achieve both precise and comprehensive enclosure of video activities. Appearance and motion are exploited as mutually complimentary cues to localize regions of interest (RoIs). A normalized spatio-temporal cube (STC) is built from each RoI as a video event, which lays the foundation of VEC and serves as a basic processing unit. Second, we encourage DNN to capture high-level semantics by solving a visual cloze test. To build such a visual cloze test, a certain patch of STC is erased to yield an incomplete event (IE). The DNN learns to restore the original video event from the IE by inferring the missing patch. Third, to incorporate richer motion dynamics, another DNN is trained to infer erased patches' optical flow. Finally, two ensemble strategies using different types of IE and modalities are proposed to boost VAD performance, so as to fully exploit the temporal context and modality information for VAD. VEC can consistently outperform state-of-the-art methods by a notable margin (typically 1.5%-5% AUROC) on commonly-used VAD benchmarks. | 2020 | Toward Energy-Aware Caching for Intelligent Connected VehiclesabstractWith the widespread application of infotainment services in intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs), network traffic has grown exponentially, bringing huge burden and energy consumption to the ICV network. Edge caching, which enables edges [e.g., vehicles or roadside units (RSUs)] with cache storages, is a promising technology to alleviate this problem. In this article, in terms of the hybrid communication mode of vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to RSU (V2R), an energy-aware caching scheme for infotainment services is proposed. Considering the geographical distribution of vehicles and RSUs as well as the size of transmission content, the energy consumption model in the ICV network is formulated to implement the optimal selection of cache nodes. Then, the selection of the cache node in the ICV network is transformed into the optimal stopping problem and solved by the optimal stopping theory. Finally, we propose a new algorithm for optimal energy-efficiency cache node selection (OEECS). The simulation results show that the proposed OEECS can obtain higher energy saving and lower average access latency than other baseline schemes. | 2020 | Unsupervised Online Anomaly Detection With Parameter Adaptation for KPI Abrupt ChangesabstractIT companies need to monitor various Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and detect anomalies in real time to ensure the quality and reliability of Internet-based services. However, due to the diversity of KPIs, the ambiguity and scarcity of anomalies and the lack of labels, anomaly detection for various KPIs has been a great challenge. Existing KPI anomaly detection methods have not explored the properties of anomalies in KPIs in detail to our best knowledge. Therefore, we explore anomalies in KPIs and recognize a common and important form of anomalies namedabrupt changes, which often indicate potential failures in the relevant services. Forabrupt changesin various KPIs, we proposeDDCOL, an unsupervised online anomaly detection algorithm with parameter adaptation from the perspective of anomalies for the first time. We propose three techniques: high order${D}$ifference extraction and combination,${D}$ensity-based${C}$lustering with parameter adaptation and${O}\text{n}{L}$ine detection with subsampling (DDCOL). Compared with traditional statistical methods and unsupervised learning methods, extensive experimental results and analysis on a large number of public KPIs show the competitive performance ofDDCOLand the significance ofabrupt changes. Furthermore, we provide an interpretation for the promising results, which shows thatDDCOLcan be robust to KPI expected concept drifts, and obtain a good feature distribution of normal data in KPIs. | 2019 | LTE Phone Number Catcher: A Practical Attack against Mobile PrivacyabstractPhone number is a unique identity code of a mobile subscriber, which plays a more important role in the mobile social network life than another identification number IMSI. Unlike the IMSI, a mobile device never transmits its own phone number to the network side in the radio. However, the mobile network may send a user’s phone number to another mobile terminal when this user initiating a call or SMS service. Based on the above facts, with the help of an IMSI catcher and 2G man-in-the-middle attack, this paper implemented a practicable and effective phone number catcher prototype targeting at LTE mobile phones. We caught the LTE user’s phone number within a few seconds after the device camped on our rogue station. This paper intends to verify that mobile privacy is also quite vulnerable even in LTE networks as long as the legacy GSM still exists. Moreover, we demonstrated that anyone with basic programming skills and the knowledge of GSM/LTE specifications can easily build a phone number catcher using SDR tools and commercial off-the-shelf devices. Hence, we hope the operators worldwide can completely disable the GSM mobile networks in the areas covered by 3G and 4G networks as soon as possible to reduce the possibility of attacks on higher-generation cellular networks. Several potential countermeasures are also discussed to temporarily or permanently defend the attack. Chuan Yu 0003, Shuhui Chen, Zhiping Cai

However, communications equipment is often damaged in disasters, and the very limited communication bandwidth restricts the upload of photos to the cloud center, seriously impeding disaster rescue endeavors. Based on edge computing, we propose Echo, a highly time-efficient disaster rescue framework. By utilizing the computing, storage, and communication abilities of edge servers, disaster photos are preprocessed and analyzed in real time, and more specific visuals are immensely helpful for conducting emergency response and rescue. This article takes the search for missing people as a case study to show that Echo can be more advantageous in terms of disaster rescue. To greatly conserve valuable communication bandwidth, only significantly associated images are extracted and uploaded to the cloud center for subsequent facial recognition. Furthermore, an adaptive photo detector is designed to utilize the precious and unstable communication bandwidth effectively, as well as ensure the photo detection precision and recall rate. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method are demonstrated by simulation experiments. Fang Liu 0002, Yeting Guo, Zhiping Cai, Nong Xiao 0001, Ziming Zhao 0002 |

Localized Incomplete Multiple Kernel k-meansabstractThe recently proposed multiple kernel k-means with incomplete kernels (MKKM-IK) optimally integrates a group of pre-specified incomplete kernel matrices to improve clustering performance. Though it demonstrates promising performance in various applications, we observe that it does not \emph{sufficiently consider the local structure among data and indiscriminately forces all pairwise sample similarity to equally align with their ideal similarity values}. This could make the incomplete kernels less effectively imputed, and in turn adversely affect the clustering performance. In this paper, we propose a novel localized incomplete multiple kernel k-means (LI-MKKM) algorithm to address this issue. Different from existing MKKM-IK, LI-MKKM only requires the similarity of a sample to its k-nearest neighbors to align with their ideal similarity values. This helps the clustering algorithm to focus on closer sample pairs that shall stay together and avoids involving unreliable similarity evaluation for farther sample pairs. We carefully design a three-step iterative algorithm to solve the resultant optimization problem and theoretically prove its convergence. Comprehensive experiments on eight benchmark datasets demonstrate that our algorithm significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art comparable algorithms proposed in the recent literature, verifying the advantage of considering local structure. | 2018 | From Uncertain Photos to Certain Coverage: a Novel Photo Selection Approach to Mobile CrowdsensingabstractTraditional mobile crowdsensing photo selection process focuses on selecting photos from participants to a server. The server may contain tons of photos for a certain area. A new problem is how to select a set of photos from the server to a smartphone user when the user requests to view an area (e.g., a hot spot). The challenge of the new problem is that the photo set should attain both photo coverage and view quality (e.g., with clear Points of Interest). However, contributions of these geo-tagged photos could be uncertain for a target area due to unavailable information of photo shooting direction and no reference photos. In this paper, we propose a novel and generic server-to-requester photo selection approach. Our approach leverages a utility measure to quantify the contribution of a photo set, where photos' spatial distribution and visual correlation are jointly exploited to evaluate their performance on photo coverage and view quality. Finding the photo set with the maximum utility is proven to be NP-hard. We then propose an approximation algorithm based on a greedy strategy with rigorous theoretical analysis. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated with real-world datasets. The results show that the proposal outperforms other approaches with much higher photo coverage and better view quality. | 2018 | Security and Privacy in the Medical Internet of Things: A ReviewabstractMedical Internet of Things, also well known as MIoT, is playing a more and more important role in improving the health, safety, and care of billions of people after its showing up. Instead of going to the hospital for help, patients’ health-related parameters can be monitored remotely, continuously, and in real time, then processed, and transferred to medical data center, such as cloud storage, which greatly increases the efficiency, convenience, and cost performance of healthcare. The amount of data handled by MIoT devices grows exponentially, which means higher exposure of sensitive data. The security and privacy of the data collected from MIoT devices, either during their transmission to a cloud or while stored in a cloud, are major unsolved concerns. This paper focuses on the security and privacy requirements related to data flow in MIoT. In addition, we make in-depth study on the existing solutions to security and privacy issues, together with the open challenges and research issues for future work. | 2018 | A Survey on Security-Aware Measurement in SDNabstractSoftware-defined networking (SDN) is one of the most prevailing networking paradigms in current and next-generation networks. Basically, the highly featured separation of control and data planes makes SDN a proper solution towards many practical problems that challenge legacy networks, for example, energy efficiency, dynamic network configuration, agile network measurement, and flexible network deployment. Although the SDN and its applications have been extensively studied for several years, the research of SDN security is still in its infancy. Typically, the SDN suffers from architecture defect and OpenFlow protocol loopholes such as single controller problem, deficiency of communication verification, and network resources constraint. Hence, network measurement is a fundamental technique of protecting SDN against the above security threats. Specifically, network measurement aims to understand and quantify a variety of network behaviors to facilitate network management and monitoring, anomaly detection, network troubleshooting, and the establishment of security mechanisms. In this paper, we present a systematic survey on security-aware measurement technology in SDN. In particular, we first review the basic architecture of SDN and corresponding security challenges. Then, we investigate two performance measurement techniques in SDN, namely, link latency and available bandwidth measurements. After that, we further provide a general overview of topology measurement in SDN including intradomain and interdomain topology discovering techniques. Finally, we list three interesting future directions of security-aware measurement in SDN followed by giving conclusion remarks. Zhiping Cai, Qiang Liu 0004, Qingjun Xiao, Chak-Fong Cheang

Detecting Rogue AP with the Crowd WisdomabstractWiFi networks are vulnerable to rogue AP attacks in which an attacker sets up an imposter AP to lure mobile users to connect. The attacker can eavesdrop on the communication, severely threatening users' privacy. Existing rogue AP detection solutions are confined to some specific attack scenarios (e.g., by relaying the traffic to a target AP) or require additional hardware. In this paper, we propose a crowdsensing based approach, named CRAD, to detect rogue APs in camouflage without specialized hardware requirement. CRAD exploits the spatial correlation of RSS to identify a potential imposter, which should be at a different location from the legitimate one. The RSS measurements collected from the crowd facilitate a robust profile and minimize the inaccuracy effect of a single RSS value. As a result, CRAD can filter out abnormal samples sensed in the realtime by dynamically matching the profile. We evaluate our approach with both a public dataset and a real prototype. The results show that CRAD can yield 90% detection accuracy and precision with proper crowd presence, even when the rogue AP is launched close to the legitimate one (e.g., within 1m). | 2017 | Edge-based Content-aware Crowdsourcing Approach for Image Sensing in Disaster EnvironmentabstractPhotos obtained via crowdsourcing can be used in image sensing for disaster management. Due to the weak communication environment after a disaster, it is difficult to transfer the huge amount of crowdsourced photos. To address this problem, we propose COCO, a content-aware crowdsourcing system that leverages edge computing to support real-time image sensing in disaster environment. COCO filters the crowdsourced images at the data source and only uploads the images that contain relevant objects which the application is interested in. We use a machine-learning based computer vision detector to understand the content of images. Considering the resource constraints of mobile devices, we implement the computer vision detector at the edge server which located in the close proximity to data source. As the unstable network bandwidth is normal in disaster environment, we propose an adaptive mechanism to further improve the sensing performance. We have implemented the COCO prototype which is evaluated via a real-world dataset. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of COCO. | 2017 | Network Intrusion Detection through Stacking Dilated Convolutional AutoencodersabstractNetwork intrusion detection is one of the most important parts for cyber security to protect computer systems against malicious attacks. With the emergence of numerous sophisticated and new attacks, however, network intrusion detection techniques are facing several significant challenges. The overall objective of this study is to learn useful feature representations automatically and efficiently from large amounts of unlabeled raw network traffic data by using deep learning approaches. We propose a novel network intrusion model by stacking dilated convolutional autoencoders and evaluate our method on two new intrusion detection datasets. Several experiments were carried out to check the effectiveness of our approach. The comparative experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model can achieve considerably high performance which meets the demand of high accuracy and adaptability of network intrusion detection systems (NIDSs). It is quite potential and promising to apply our model in the large-scale and real-world network environments. Yang Yu 0007, Zhiping Cai

Counter Tree: A Scalable Counter Architecture for Per-Flow Traffic MeasurementabstractPer-flow traffic measurement, which is to count the number of packets for each active flow during a certain measurement period, has many applications in traffic engineering, classification of routing distribution or network usage pattern, service provision, anomaly detection, and network forensics. In order to keep up with the high throughput of modern routers or switches, the online module for per-flow traffic measurement should use high-bandwidth SRAM that allows fast memory accesses. Due to limited SRAM space, exact counting, which requires to keep a counter for each flow, does not scale to large networks consisting of numerous flows. Some recent work takes a different approach to estimate the flow sizes using counter architectures that can fit into tight SRAM. However, existing counter architectures have limitations, either still requiring considerable SRAM space or having a small estimation range. In this paper, we design a scalable counter architecture called Counter Tree, which leverages a 2-D counter sharing scheme to achieve far better memory efficiency and in the meantime extend estimation range significantly. Furthermore, we improve the performance of Counter Tree by adding a status bit to each counter. Extensive experiments with real network traces demonstrate that our counter architecture can produce accurate estimates for flows of all sizes under very tight memory space. | 2017 | Adaptive Joint Estimation Protocol for Arbitrary Pair of Tag Sets in a Distributed RFID SystemabstractRadio frequency identification (RFID) technology has been widely used in Applications, such as inventory control, object tracking, and supply chain management. In this domain, an important research problem is called RFID cardinality estimation, which focuses on estimating the number of tags in a certain area covered by one or multiple readers. This paper extends the research in both temporal and spatial dimensions to provide much richer information about the dynamics of distributed RFID systems. Specifically, we focus on estimating the cardinalities of the intersection/differences/union of two arbitrary tag sets (called joint properties for short) that exist in different spatial or temporal domains. With many practical applications, there is, however, little prior work on this problem. We will propose a joint RFID estimation protocol that supports adaptive snapshot construction. Given the snapshots of any two tag sets, although their lengths may be very different depending on the sizes of tag sets they encode, we design a way to combine their information and more importantly, derive closed-form formulas to use the combined information and estimate the joint properties of the two tag sets, with an accuracy that can be arbitrarily set. By formal analysis, we also determine the optimal system parameters that minimize the execution time of taking snapshots, under the constraints of a given accuracy requirement. We have performed extensive simulations, and the results show that our protocol can reduce the execution time by multiple folds, as compared with the best alternative approach in literature. | 2016 | Efficient Distributed Joint Detection of Widespread Events in Large Networked SystemsabstractThe Internet has become a fundamental platform for virtually all social, economical and security activities in modern societies. Monitoring widespread events on the Internet has many important applications in social trend studies and distributed intrusion/attack detection. This paper studies the problem of distributed joint detection of widespread events observed by the collaborating network devices (called watchers). In order to work with a large number of watchers, the recent work requires a central coordinator to help detect the common events. The central coordinator however has the problems of single- point of failure, fairness and trust issue in coordinator placement, and communication bottleneck at the coordinator. This paper proposes a fully- distributed solution for joint detection of common events based on a peer-to-peer model without using a central coordinator. Our design adopts an iterative set-join process that follows the structure of a hypercube, which reduces the communication complexity from O(n m) to O(m log n), where m is the size of the largest event set at any device and n is the number of collaborating devices. | 2016 | Optimized Virtual Network Functions Migration for NFVabstractCombining with software-defined networking and IT virtualization technologies, Network Function Virtualization (NFV) has been proposed as an important technology to speed up deployment of new network services. VNF (Virtual Network Function) migration is a critical step to redeploy virtual network functions for providing better network services. Previous work in virtual network function migration primarily focused on the migration mechanism, including maintaining internal state consistency and reducing migrating time. In this paper, we address the problem of optimally migrating virtual network functions. As the computing and network resource requirement of virtual network functions have been changed, these virtual network functions have to be migrated to meet the computing and network resource constraints. As the SDN controllers conducted technology is used to migrate the virtual network functions, the migration cost depends on the buffer size of controllers and the time of transferring the internal state of virtual network functions. A cost model is proposed to evaluate the migration cost. The problem of optimal virtual network functions migration with satisfying computing and network resource constraints is NP-hard. A heuristic algorithm is proposed for computing the approximate solution. The effectiveness of the algorithms is validated by simulations evaluation. Zhiping Cai, Ming Xu 0002

Leveraging Crowd to improve data credibility for mobile crowdsensingabstractMobile crowdsensing (MCS) is a new paradigm which takes advantage of pervasive mobile devices to collaboratively collect data and analyze physical phenomenon. As mobile devices are owned and controlled by individuals with various capabilities and intentions, a main challenge MCS applications face is to ensure the credibility of the crowd contributed data. Existed works attempt to increase confidence level of the sensory measurements by validating the location. However, the required infrastructure or neighbor support may not always be available, and the unreliable form containing false sensory data with a valid location is implicitly ignored. In this paper, we propose a novel Crowd-based Credibility Improving Scheme (CCIS) to improve the credibility of data in possible false forms leveraging crowd data property and crowd participants' reputation. Based on the data clusters generated using a lightweight fixed-width clustering algorithm, CCIS is able to adequately identify and filter out the clusters constituted mainly by false data using reputation information as the classifier. We conduct simulations on a publicly available trace with crowd contributed temperature measurements, the results show that CCIS yields an improvement of overall data credibility of around 1.2 with clustering accuracy over 96%. | 2015 | Searching for Widespread Events in Large Networked Systems by Cooperative MonitoringabstractSearching for widespread events in large networks is a fundamental function that underlies many important applications of distributed anomaly detection, traffic measurement, online data mining, etc. This function can be performed by a cooperative monitoring system consisting of a central coordinator and a number of monitors that are deployed at a set of vantage points. We formulate a network primitive function, called multi-monitor joint detection, which is to find the common events observed by all or a given subset of monitors during each measurement period. It is a challenging problem because large-scale cooperative monitoring can generate tremendous communication overhead. Therefore, it is critical to design a solution for multi-monitor joint detection which controls communication overhead to a low level. We thoroughly examine existing techniques that may be applied, and identify their performance limitations. We then propose two new techniques, called combinable filters and progressive filtering, which address the performance limitations from different angles. We formally prove the correctness of our new solutions based on a probabilistic joint detection model. Numerical evaluation shows that our best solution achieves an overhead reduction in the range of 63% to 91% over the Bloom filter solution under various simulation settings when the number of monitors is 10 or more. | 2015 | WAlloc: An efficient wear-aware allocator for non-volatile main memoryabstractThe non-volatile memory (NVM) has the illustrious merits of byte-addressability, fast speed, persistency and low power consumption, which make it attractive to be used as main memory. Commonly, user process dynamically acquires memory through memory allocators. However, traditional memory allocators designed with in-place data writes are not appropriate for non-volatile main memory (NVRAM) due to the limited endurance. For instance, the number of write operations is merely 108 times per PCM cell. In this paper, we quantitatively analyze the wear-oblivious of DRAM-oriented designed allocator-glibc malloc and the inefficiency of wear-conscious allocator-NVMalloc. For example, the average imbalance factor (the maximum/the average) of memory allocation is about 7.5 and 3, respectively. Based on our observations, we propose WAlloc, an efficient wear-aware manual memory allocator designed for NVRAM, decouples metadata and data, uses Less Allocated First Out allocation policy and redirects the data writes. Experimental results show that the wear-leveling of WAlloc outperforms that of NVMalloc about 30% and 60% under random workloads and well-distributed workloads, respectively. In addition, considering the trade-off between space and wear-leveling, WAlloc reduces average data memory writes in 64 bytes block by average 1.5X comparing with malloc with almost 8% extra space overhead. | 2014 | Security-aware virtual network embeddingabstractNetwork virtualization is a promising technology to enable multiple architectures to run on a single network. However, virtualization also introduces additional security vulnerabilities that may be exploited by attackers. It is necessary to ensure that the security requirements of virtual networks are met by the physical substrate, which however has not received much attention thus far. This paper represents an early attempt to consider the security issue in virtual network embedding, the process of mapping virtual networks onto physical nodes and links. We model the security demands of virtual networks by proposing a simple taxonomy of abstractions, which is enough to meet the variations of security requirements. Based on the abstraction, we formulate security-aware virtual network embedding as an optimization problem, proposing objective functions and mathematical constraints which involve both resource and security restrictions. Then a heuristic algorithm is developed to solve this problem. Our simulation results indicate its high efficiency and effectiveness. Shuhao Liu 0001, Zhiping Cai, Hong Xu 0001, Ming Xu 0002

Using multiple unmanned aerial vehicles to maintain connectivity of MANETsabstractUnmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as promising relay platforms to improve the connectivity of ground Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Due to the relatively high cost of UAVs, a lot of efforts have been made to optimize the deployment of UAVs so that the number of UAVs needed in maintaining the connectivity of ground nodes can be minimized. However, existing work on optimization of UAVs' deployment hasn't considered the situation that there are already some UAVs deployed in the field. In this paper, we study the problem of deploying minimum number of UAVs to maintain the connectivity of ground MANETs under the condition that some UAVs have already been deployed in the field. We formulate this problem as a Minimum Steiner Tree problem with Existing Mobile Steiner points under Edge Length Bound constraints (MST-EMSELB) and prove that the problem is NP-Complete. We also propose an Existing UAVs Aware (EUA) polynomial time approximate algorithm for the MST-EMSELB problem that uses a maximum match heuristic to compute new positions for existing UAVs. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed EUA method has bester performance than a non-EUA method in the term of needed new UAV numbers. Compared with the non-EUA method, the EUA method can reduce at most 60% of the new UAVs number. Zhiping Cai, Ming Xu 0002

To this end, in this paper, we propose a distributed Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) coprocessor architecture. | 2013 | FADE: Forwarding Assessment Based Detection of Collaborative Grey Hole Attacks in WMNsabstractData security, which is concerned with the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data, is still challenging the application of wireless mesh networks (WMNs). In this paper, we focus on a special type of denial-of-service attack, called selective forwarding or grey hole attack. When this attack is launched at the gateways of a WMN where data tend to aggregate, it could lead to severe damages due to loss of sensitive data. Most existing proposals that focus on detecting stand-alone attackers via channel overhearing are ineffective against collusive attackers. In this paper, we propose a forwarding assessment based detection (FADE) scheme to mitigate collaborative grey hole attacks. Specifically, FADE detects sophisticated attacks by means of forwarding assessments aided by two-hop acknowledgement monitoring. Moreover, FADE can coexist with contemporary link security techniques. We analyze the optimal detection threshold that minimizes the sum of false positive rate and false negative rate of FADE, considering the network dynamics due to degraded channel quality or medium access collisions. Extensive simulation results are presented to demonstrate the adaptability of FADE to network dynamics and its effectiveness in detecting collaborative grey hole attacks. | 2012 | Flow level detection and filtering of low-rate DDoSabstractThe recently proposed TCP-targeted Low-rate Distributed Denial-of-Service (LDDoS) attacks send fewer packets to attack legitimate flows by exploiting the vulnerability in TCP’s congestion control mechanism. They are difficult to detect while causing severe damage to TCP-based applications. Existing approaches can only detect the presence of an LDDoS attack, but fail to identify LDDoS flows. In this paper, we propose a novel metric – Congestion Participation Rate (CPR) – and a CPR-based approach to detect and filter LDDoS attacks by their intention to congest the network. The major innovation of the CPR-base approach is its ability to identify LDDoS flows. A flow with a CPR higher than a predefined threshold is classified as an LDDoS flow, and consequently all of its packets will be dropped. We analyze the effectiveness of CPR theoretically by quantifying the average CPR difference between normal TCP flows and LDDoS flows and showing that CPR can differentiate them. We conduct ns-2 simulations, test-bed experiments, and Internet traffic trace analysis to validate our analytical results and evaluate the performance of the proposed approach. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed CPR-based approach is substantially more effective compared to an existing Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT)-based approach – one of the most efficient approaches in detecting LDDoS attacks. We also provide experimental guidance to choose the CPR threshold in practice. Changwang Zhang, Zhiping Cai, Weifeng Chen 0001, Xiapu Luo, Jianping Yin |

Active Learning to Defend Poisoning Attack against Semi-Supervised Intrusion Detection ClassifierabstractIntrusion detection systems play an important role in computer security. To make intrusion detection systems adaptive to changing environments, supervised learning techniques had been applied in intrusion detection. However, supervised learning needs a large amount of training instances to obtain classifiers with high accuracy. Limited to lack of high quality labeled instances, some researchers focused on semi-supervised learning to utilize unlabeled instances enhancing classification. But involving the unlabeled instances into the learning process also introduces vulnerability: attackers can generate fake unlabeled instances to mislead the final classifier so that a few intrusions can not be detected. In this paper we show that the attacker could mislead the semi-supervised intrusion detection classifier by poisoning the unlabeled instances. And we propose a defend method based on active learning to defeat the poisoning attack. Experiments show that the poisoning attack can reduce the accuracy of the semi-supervised learning classifier and the proposed defending method based on active learning can obtain higher accuracy than the original semi-supervised learner under the presented poisoning attack. | 2010 | Scalable NIDS via Negative Pattern Matching and Exclusive Pattern MatchingabstractIn this paper, we identify the unique challenges in deploying parallelism on TCAM-based pattern matching for Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDSes). We resolve two critical issues when designing scalable parallelism specifically for pattern matching modules: 1) how to enable fine-grained parallelism in pursuit of effective load balancing and desirable speedup simultaneously; and 2) how to reconcile the tension between parallel processing speedup and prohibitive TCAM power consumption. To this end, we first propose the novel concept of Negative Pattern Matching to partition flows, by which the number of TCAM lookups can be significantly reduced, and the resulting (fine-grained) flow segments can be inspected in parallel without incurring false negatives. Then we propose the notion of Exclusive Pattern Matching to divide the entire pattern set into multiple subsets which can later be matched against selectively and independently without affecting the correctness. We show that Exclusive Pattern Matching enables the adoption of smaller and faster TCAM blocks and improves both the pattern matching speed and scalability. Finally, our theoretical and experimental results validate that the above two concepts are inherently complementary, enabling our integrated scheme to provide performance gain in any scenario (with either clean or dirty traffic). Both the multi-phase character in the temporal dimension and the impacts in the spatial dimension are concerned in our method. We use three metrics to assess threat, namely the ratio of progress, botnet size, and bots distribution. Experimental results show that our method is sensitive to the changes of attack states, and is easy to be implemented in an early warning system because of its simplicity. | 2009 | Virtual Disk Image Reclamation for Software Updates in Virtual Machine EnvironmentsabstractVirtual disks (VD) are the main form of storage in today's virtual machine (VM) environments for they have many attractive features, such as encapsulation, mobility, isolation, etc. A typical virtual disk image usually has a large size of at least several gigabytes, a disadvantage that may limit its usage in many situations, such as fast software deployment in large-scale virtual machine environments, fast VM migration in local or distributed environments, etc. The COW (Copy-on-Write) virtual block device supported by many virtual machine monitors can split the traditional one-piece large-sized VD image into multiple smaller-sized VD images (COW disks). However, frequent or long-term software updates may result in large numbers of COW disks. Moreover, the accumulated large numbers of old-version COW disks (OCD) installed with old-version software may cause serious disk space wastage. In this paper, we propose two VD image reclamation approaches RPD and RMD to reclaim the OCDs so as to free the disk space taken by the old-version software and to maintain the number of COW disks in a specific range to ease the VD image management. Based on QEMU and Linux system, we have developed tools to implement the two approaches. Experiments show that the two VD image reclamation approaches can effectively reclaim the OCDs so as to be able to support frequent or long-term software updates in virtual machine environments. | 2009 | DPM: A Demand-driven Virtual Disk Prefetch Mechanism for Mobile Personal Computing EnvironmentsabstractIn this paper, we propose a demand-driven virtual disk (VD) prefetch mechanism-DPM to improve the performance of virtual machine (VM) at destination site for mobile personal computing environments. DPM uses an optimized COW (Copy-on-Write) virtual block device to split the traditional one-piece large-sized VD image into multiple small-sized SVDs (Software Virtual Disk) at a basic granularity of a single kind of software. Based on the fine-grained VD splitting, DPM uses an access frequency and priority-based prefetch target identifying - APTI algorithm to identify the SVDs of the being-used software by the user in real-time mode at destination site, and prefetches those SVDs by utilizing P2P transportation mechanism at background. We have built a prototype to realize DPM on Xen virtual machine monitor (VMM). Experiments on the prototype show that DPM can effectively improve the VM performance at an unexpected destination site without any cached VD state, supporting agile mobility of personal computing environments. | 2008 | Efficient disk encryption and verification through trusted nonceabstractApproach that integrates encryption and verification is proposed to protect hard disk data. For each data sector, MAC is calculated and the (data sector, MAC) pair is encrypted through the encryption key deduced from the secret root key and a unique nonce. By assuring the nonce to be trusted or untampered through hash tree, data can then be properly decrypted and authenticated. To achieve satisfiable performance, it applies stream cipher to offload the encryption cost, and adopts special structure hash tree with hot-access-windows to fulfill nonce checking efficiently. Ultimately, it can provide data protection with characteristics like solid resistance against any attacks, online working mode, low-level protecting, and high performance. Related model, approaches and system realization are elaborated, as well as testing results. Theoretical analysis and experimental simulations show that it is a practical and available way to build secure disk. Fangyong Hou, Dawu Gu, Nong Xiao 0001, Zhiping Cai

| 2005 | Efficiently monitoring link bandwidth in IP networksabstractLink bandwidth utilization is obviously critical for numerous network management tasks. Using the flow-conservation law, we could reduce the number of activated monitor agents. The problem of efficiently monitoring link-bandwidth based on flow-conservation law could be reduced to weak vertex cover problem, which is NP-hard. In this paper, we demonstrate an approximation preserving reduction from the vertex cover problem to weak vertex cover problem. Due to this reduction, it follows that it is very difficult to get an approximation algorithm with approximation ratio lower than 2 for weak vertex cover problem. Using the primal-dual method, we give an approximation algorithm with approximation ratio 2 to solve the problem. The effectiveness of our monitoring algorithm is validated by simulations evaluation over a wide range of network topologies. We also demonstrate the problem of weak vertex cover with blackout vertices could be reduce to weak vertex cover problem. Hence we could use the approximation algorithms for weak vertex cover problem to solve the problem of weak vertex cover with blackout vertices.
