2023 A real-time feedback system stabilises the regulation of worker reproduction under various colony sizes
abstract
Social insects demonstrate adaptive behaviour for a given colony size. Remarkably, most species do this even without visual information in a dark environment. However, how they achieve this is yet unknown. Based on individual trait expression, an agent-based simulation was used to identify an explicit mechanism for understanding colony size dependent behaviour. Through repeated physical contact between the queen and individual workers, individual colony members monitor the physiological states of others, reflecting such contact information in their physiology and behaviour. Feedback between the sensing of physiological states and the corresponding behaviour patterns leads to self-organisation with colonies shifting according to their size. We showed (1) the queen can exhibit adaptive behaviour patterns for the increase in colony size while density per space remains unchanged, and (2) such physical constraints can underlie the adaptive switching of colony stages from successful patrol behaviour to unsuccessful patrol behaviour, which leads to constant ovary development (production of reproductive castes). The feedback loops embedded in the queen between the perception of internal states of the workers and behavioural patterns can explain the adaptive behaviour as a function of colony size.

2004 Speech-to-text and speech-to-speech summarization of spontaneous speech
abstract
This paper presents techniques for speech-to-text and speech-to-speech automatic summarization based on speech unit extraction and concatenation. For the former case, a two-stage summarization method consisting of important sentence extraction and word-based sentence compaction is investigated. Sentence and word units which maximize the weighted sum of linguistic likelihood, amount of information, confidence measure, and grammatical likelihood of concatenated units are extracted from the speech recognition results and concatenated for producing summaries. For the latter case, sentences, words, and between-filler units are investigated as units to be extracted from original speech. These methods are applied to the summarization of unrestricted-domain spontaneous presentations and evaluated by objective and subjective measures. It was confirmed that proposed methods are effective in spontaneous speech summarization.

2003 Automatic speech summarization based on sentence extraction and compaction
abstract
This paper proposes a new automatic speech summarization method having two stages: important sentence extraction and sentence compaction. Relatively important sentences are extracted based on the amount of information and the confidence measures of constituent words, and the set of extracted sentences is compressed by our sentence compaction method. The sentence compaction is performed by selecting a word set that maximizes a summarization score consisting of the amount of information and the confidence measure of each word, the linguistic likelihood of word strings, and the word concatenation probability. The selected words are concatenated to create a summary. Effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed by summarizing a spontaneous presentation.
