| 2024 | "It Is a Moving Process": Understanding the Evolution of Explainability Needs of Clinicians in Pulmonary MedicineabstractClinicians increasingly pay attention to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the quality and timeliness of their services. There are converging opinions on the need for Explainable AI (XAI) in healthcare. However, prior work considers explanations as stationary entities with no account for the temporal dynamics of patient care. In this work, we involve 16 Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) clinicians from a European university medical centre and investigate their evolving uses and purposes for explainability throughout patient care. By applying a patient journey map for IPF, we elucidate clinicians’ informational needs, how human agency and patient-specific conditions can influence the interaction with XAI systems, and the content, delivery, and relevance of explanations over time. We discuss implications for integrating XAI in clinical contexts and more broadly how explainability is defined and evaluated. Furthermore, we reflect on the role of medical education in addressing epistemic challenges related to AI literacy. | 2021 | A Variational Quantum Algorithm for Ordered SVDabstractSingular value decomposition (SVD) is fundamentally important and broadly useful in both quantum and classical computing. There are several quantum algorithms known for SVD. Variational quantum algorithms with parametric quantum circuits (PQC) are the most promising approach to find SVD with near-term quantum computers. This paper reports a new method for quantum SVD (QSVD) that finds the singular vectors ordered by the magnitude of singular values by adding extra CNOT gates and a new local cost function design. This ordering is important because the singular vectors with the larger singular values is more representative for the given information. The ordering property of this approach is investigated with the standard Iris dataset by numerical simulations of 4-qubit states. Methods for choosing appropriate choices for the cost function hyperparameter and cost function terms as well as an application example of a quantum encoder are also discussed. | 2016 | EureCar turbo: A self-driving car that can handle adverse weather conditionsabstractAutonomous driving technology has made significant advances in recent years. In order for self-driving cars to become practical, they are required to operate safely and reliably even under adverse driving conditions. However, most current autonomous driving cars have only been shown to be operational under amiable weather conditions, i.e., on sunny days on dry roads. In order to enable autonomous cars to handle adverse driving conditions such as rain and wet roads, the algorithm must be able to detect roads within a tolerable margin of error using sensors such as cameras and laser scanners. In this paper, we propose a sensor fusion algorithms that is able to operate under a variety of weather conditions, including rain. Our algorithm was validated when a strong shower occurred during the 2014 Hyundai Motor Company's Autonomous Car Competition. In this paper, we present the competition results that were collected on the same course on both sunny and rainy days. Based on the comparison, we propose the future directions to improve the autonomous driving capability under adverse environmental conditions. | 2015 | Spatio-temporal analysis of state-of-charge streams for electric vehiclesabstractThis paper collects the SoC (State-of-Charge) changes of electric vehicles and analyzes the battery consumption behavior. For multiple SoC streams generated on the same road, a Hadoop Pig script filters essential information fields out of the vast amount of SoC records, while its user-defined function adds the distance and the time taken from the start point. Next, neural networks are built to trace the SoC dynamics according to both spatial and temporal aspects of SoC records using the R statistics package. A time-combined model reduces the fitting error by 50 %, compared with the distance-only model. The ongoing project keeps accumulating SoC streams and our model will investigate the effect of other parameters and correlate different streams. An accurate model for major roads taken by most trips, will lead to a more efficient estimation of battery consumption for any point-to-point routes.
