In memory processing of massive point clouds for multi-core systemsabstractLIDAR is a popular remote sensing method used to examine the surface of the Earth. LIDAR instruments use light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges (variable distances) and generate vast amounts of precise three dimensional point data describing the shape of the Earth. Processing large collections of point cloud data and combining them with auxiliary GIS data remain an open research problem. Kostis Kyzirakos, Foteini Alvanaki, Martin L. Kersten

A columnar architecture for modern risk management systemsabstract3D digital city models form the basis for flow simulations (e.g. wind flow and water runoff), urban planning, under-and over-ground formation analysis, and they are very important for automated anomaly detection on man made structures. They consist of large collections of semantically rich objects which have many properties such as material and color. Such user's data structure perception is leading to complex storage schemas. The number of table relations to manage and the large data storage footprint drawbacks are then extended with the fact that not all the systems have a “real” 3D data type. In this work we would like to show our efforts to develop a new kind of Spatial Data Management System (SDBMS) where topological and geometric functionality for 3D raster manipulation will become part of the relational kernel and not an add-on. With it spatial analysis tailored to different use case scenarios is done on-demand and fast enough to support real-time interaction in modern risk management systems. | 2016 | A spatial column-store to triangulate the Netherlands on the flyabstract3D digital city models, important for urban planning, are currently constructed from massive point clouds obtained through airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). They are semantically enriched with information obtained from auxiliary GIS data like Cadastral data which contains information about the boundaries of properties, road networks, rivers, lakes etc. Romulo Goncalves, Tom van Tilburg, Kostis Kyzirakos, Foteini Alvanaki, Panagiotis Koutsourakis, Ben van Werkhoven, Willem Robert van Hage

A Round Table for Multi-disciplinary Research on Geospatial and Climate DataabstractEarth observation sciences produce large sets of data which are inherently rich in spatial and geo-spatial information. Together with live data collected from monitoring systems and large collections of semantically rich objects they provide new opportunities for advanced eScience research on climatology, urban planing and smart cities. Such combination of heterogeneous data sets forms a new source of knowledge. Efficient knowledge extraction from them is an eScience challenge. It requires efficient bulk data injection from both static and streaming data sources, dynamic adaptation of the physical and logical schema, efficient methods to correlate spatial and temporal data, and flexibility to (re-)formulate the research question at any time. In this work, we present a data management layer over a column-oriented relational data management system that provides efficient analysis of spatiotemporal data. It provides fast data ingestion through different data loaders, tabular and array based storage, and a dynamic step-wise exploration. | 2015 | GIS Navigation Boosted by Column StoresabstractEarth observation sciences, astronomy, and seismology have large data sets which have inherently rich spatial and geospatial information. In combination with large collections of semantically rich objects which have a large number of thematic properties, they form a new source of knowledge for urban planning, smart cities and natural resource management. Modeling and storing these properties indicating the relationships between them is best handled in a relational database. Furthermore, the scalability requirements posed by the latest 26-attribute light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data sets are a challenge for file-based solutions. In this demo we show how to query a 640 billion point data set using a column store enriched with GIS functionality. Through a lightweight and cache conscious secondary index called Imprints, spatial queries performance on a flat table storage is comparable to traditional file-based solutions. All the results are visualised in real time using QGIS. Foteini Alvanaki, Romulo Goncalves, Milena Ivanova, Martin L. Kersten, Kostis Kyzirakos

Tracking set correlations at large scaleabstractIn this work, we consider the continuous computation of correlations between co-occurring tags that appear in messages published in social media streams. The vast amount and pace these messages are created makes it necessary to parallelise the computation of correlations to various nodes in a computing cluster. The main challenge in this is to ensure that each node will compute a subset of the coefficients and every coefficient will be computed by some node. The core task is to continuously create and maintain partitions of the tags and forward the incoming messages based on them. Our approach proposes and evaluates several algorithms that partition the tags to the nodes while at the same time they minimise the replication of tags to the nodes and balance the load on them. The proposed framework is implemented in Java within the Storm stream processing platform. We evaluate the partitioning algorithms and validate the feasibility of our approach through a thorough experimental study performed using real data. Foteini Alvanaki, Sebastian Michel 0001

See what's enBlogue: real-time emergent topic identification in social mediaabstractWith the increasing popularity of Web 2.0 streams, people become overwhelmed by the available information. This is partly countered by tagging blog posts and tweets, so that users can filter messages according to their tags. However, this is insufficient for detecting newly emerging topics that are not reflected by a single tag but are rather expressed by unusual tag combinations. This paper presents enBlogue, an approach for automatically detecting such emergent topics. EnBlogue uses a time-sliding window to compute statistics about tags and tag-pairs. These statistics are then used to identify unusual shifts in correlations, most of the time caused by real-world events. We analyze the strength of these shifts and measure the degree of unpredictability they include, used to rank tag-pairs expressing emergent topics. Additionally, this "indicator of surprise" is carried over to subsequent time points, as user interests do not abruptly vanish from one moment to the other. To avoid monitoring all tag-pairs we can also select a subset of tags, e. g., the most popular or volatile of them, to be used as seed-tags for subsequent pair-wise correlation computations. The system is fully implemented and publicly available on the Web, processing live Twitter data. We present experimental studies based on real world datasets demonstrating both the prediction quality by means of a user study and the efficiency of enBlogue. | 2011 | EnBlogue: emergent topic detection in web 2.0 streamsabstractEmergent topics are newly arising themes in news, blogs, or tweets, often implied by interesting and unexpected correlations of tags or entities. We present the enBlogue system for emergent topic detection. The name enBlogue reflects the analogy with emerging trends in fashion often referred to as en Vogue. EnBlogue continuously monitors Web 2.0 streams and keeps track of sudden changes in tag correlations which can be adjusted using personalization to reflect particular user interests. We demonstrate enBlogue with several real-time monitoring scenarios as well as with time lapse on archived data. Foteini Alvanaki, Sebastian Michel 0001, Krithi Ramamritham, Gerhard Weikum
