Label Aggregation for Composite Crowd Tasks by Worker Ability Constraint SatisfactionabstractQuality control is a crucial issue of label data collection by crowdsourcing. Typically, aggregation methods to redundant crowd labels are proposed for estimating high-quality labels from noisy crowd labels. Most of the existing works concentrate on the label aggregation for Single Crowd Tasks (SCTs) which have a single object set with homogeneous question types. However, it is useful for a requester to combine multiple relevant but different crowd tasks into a Composite Crowd Task (CCT) which have heterogeneous question types and (or) multiple object sets for diverse purposes. Instead of the label aggregation on each crowd task respectively, label aggregation methods by bridging multiple SCTs in CCTs can potentially improve the label quality of all tasks. In this paper, we propose a general label aggregation approach for such CCTs by worker ability constraint satisfaction and relaxed optimization. We collected real crowd datasets of CCTs with diverse task settings based on heterogeneous question types, including categorization, pairwise preference comparisons, and pairwise similarity comparisons. The results demonstrate that our approach can effectively bridge the worker information of CCTs to improve the quality of aggregated labels and outperforms the baselines proposed for SCTs. Jiyi Li

Toward Open-World Domain Adaptation via Iteratively Contrastive Learning and ClusteringabstractThe open-set domain adaptation (DA) aims to address both covariate shift and category shift between a labeled source domain and an unlabeled target domain. Nevertheless, existing open-set DA methods always ignore the demand for discovering novel classes that are not present in the source domain and simply reject them as "unknown" sets without further exploration, which motivates us to understand the unknown sets more specifically. In this article, we present a more challenging open-world DA problem that recognizes seen classes while discovering novel classes in the target domain. To address this problem, we propose a novel framework that converts this problem into a clustering task via contrastive learning to learn pairwise relationships among the instances. More specifically, our method consists of two iterative steps. The semi-supervised clustering step clusters the unlabeled target data and separates it into seen and novel classes. In the contrastive learning step, based on the cluster assignments, we design tailored contrastive losses that learn pairwise relationships to reduce domain discrepancy and discover novel classes. Our method can be optimized as an example of expectation maximization (EM). We establish several baselines by extending related work. Our method obtains the superior performance on five public datasets, benchmarking this challenging setting for future research. Jingzheng Li, Hailong Sun 0001, Jiyi Li, Shikui Wei

Enhanced Coherence-Aware Network with Hierarchical Disentanglement for Aspect-Category Sentiment AnalysisabstractAspect-category-based sentiment analysis (ACSA), which aims to identify aspect categories and predict their sentiments has been intensively studied due to its wide range of NLP applications. Most approaches mainly utilize intrasentential features. However, a review often includes multiple different aspect categories, and some of them do not explicitly appear in the review. Even in a sentence, there is more than one aspect category with its sentiments, and they are entangled intra-sentence, which makes the model fail to discriminately preserve all sentiment characteristics. In this paper, we propose an enhanced coherence-aware network with hierarchical disentanglement (ECAN) for ACSA tasks. Specifically, we explore coherence modeling to capture the contexts across the whole review and to help the implicit aspect and sentiment identification. To address the issue of multiple aspect categories and sentiment entanglement, we propose a hierarchical disentanglement module to extract distinct categories and sentiment features. Extensive experimental and visualization results show that our ECAN effectively decouples multiple categories and sentiments entangled in the coherence representations and achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. | 2024 | Evaluating Saliency Explanations in NLP by CrowdsourcingabstractDeep learning models have performed well on many NLP tasks. However, their internal mechanisms are typically difficult for humans to understand. The development of methods to explain models has become a key issue in the reliability of deep learning models in many important applications. Various saliency explanation methods, which give each feature of input a score proportional to the contribution of output, have been proposed to determine the part of the input which a model values most. Despite a considerable body of work on the evaluation of saliency methods, whether the results of various evaluation metrics agree with human cognition remains an open question. In this study, we propose a new human-based method to evaluate saliency methods in NLP by crowdsourcing. We recruited 800 crowd workers and empirically evaluated seven saliency methods on two datasets with the proposed method. We analyzed the performance of saliency methods, compared our results with existing automated evaluation methods, and identified notable differences between NLP and computer vision (CV) fields when using saliency methods. The instance-level data of our crowdsourced experiments and the code to reproduce the explanations are available at https://github.com/xtlu/lreccoling_evaluation. | 2024 | Human-LLM Hybrid Text Answer Aggregation for Crowd AnnotationsabstractThe quality is a crucial issue for crowd annotations.Answer aggregation is an important type of solution. The aggregated answers estimated from multiple crowd answers to the same instance are the eventually collected annotations, rather than the individual crowd answers themselves.Recently, the capability of Large Language Models (LLMs) on data annotation tasks has attracted interest from researchers. Most of the existing studies mainly focus on the average performance of individual crowd workers; several recent works studied the scenarios of aggregation on categorical labels and LLMs used as label creators. However, the scenario of aggregation on text answers and the role of LLMs as aggregators are not yet well-studied.In this paper, we investigate the capability of LLMs as aggregators in the scenario of close-ended crowd text answer aggregation. We propose a human-LLM hybrid text answer aggregation method with a Creator-Aggregator Multi-Stage (CAMS) crowdsourcing framework. We make the experiments based on public crowdsourcing datasets. The results show the effectiveness of our approach based on the collaboration of crowd workers and LLMs. Jiyi Li

A Comparative Study on Annotation Quality of Crowdsourcing and LLm Via Label AggregationabstractWhether Large Language Models (LLMs) can outperform crowdsourcing on the data annotation task is attracting interest recently. Some works verified this issue with the average performance of individual crowd workers and LLM workers on some specific NLP tasks by collecting new datasets. However, on the one hand, existing datasets for the studies of annotation quality in crowdsourcing are not yet utilized in such evaluations, which potentially provide reliable evaluations from a different viewpoint. On the other hand, the quality of these aggregated labels is crucial because, when utilizing crowdsourcing, the estimated labels aggregated from multiple crowd labels to the same instances are the eventually collected labels. Therefore, in this paper, we first investigate which existing crowdsourcing datasets can be used for a comparative study and create a benchmark. We then compare the quality between individual crowd labels and LLM labels and make the evaluations on the aggregated labels. In addition, we propose a Crowd-LLM hybrid label aggregation method and verify the performance. We find that adding LLM labels from good LLMs to existing crowdsourcing datasets can enhance the quality of the aggregated labels of the datasets, which is also higher than the quality of LLM labels themselves. | 2024 | CaDRec: Contextualized and Debiased Recommender ModelabstractRecommender models aimed at mining users' behavioral patterns have raised great attention as one of the essential applications in daily life. Recent work on graph neural networks (GNNs) or debiasing methods has attained remarkable gains. However, they still suffer from (1) over-smoothing node embeddings caused by recursive convolutions with GNNs, and (2) the skewed distribution of interactions due to popularity and user-individual biases. This paper proposes a contextualized and debiased recommender model (CaDRec). To overcome the over-smoothing issue, we explore a novel hypergraph convolution operator that can select effective neighbors during convolution by introducing both structural context and sequential context. To tackle the skewed distribution, we propose two strategies for disentangling interactions: (1) modeling individual biases to learn unbiased item embeddings, and (2) incorporating item popularity with positional encoding. Moreover, we mathematically show that the imbalance of the gradients to update item embeddings exacerbates the popularity bias, thus adopting regularization and weighting schemes as solutions. Extensive experiments on four datasets demonstrate the superiority of the CaDRec against state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. Our source code and data are released at https://github.com/WangXFng/CaDRec. | 2024 | Multi-Semantic Decoding of Visual Perception with Graph Neural NetworksabstractConstructing computational decoding models to account for the cortical representation of semantic information plays a crucial role in understanding visual perception. The human visual system processes interactive relationships among different objects when perceiving the semantic contents of natural visions. However, the existing semantic decoding models commonly regard categories as completely separate and independent visually and semantically and rarely consider the relationships from prior information. In this work, a novel semantic graph learning model was proposed to decode multiple semantic categories of perceived natural images from brain activity. The proposed model was validated on the functional magnetic resonance imaging data collected from five normal subjects while viewing 2750 natural images comprising 52 semantic categories. The results showed that the Graph Neural Network-based decoding model achieved higher accuracies than other deep neural network models. Moreover, the co-occurrence probability among semantic categories showed a significant correlation with the decoding accuracy. Additionally, the results suggested that semantic content organized in a hierarchical way with higher visual areas was more closely related to the internal visual experience. Together, this study provides a superior computational framework for multi-semantic decoding that supports the visual integration mechanism of semantic processing. | 2024 | Target Structure Learning Framework for Unsupervised Multi-Class Domain AdaptationabstractUnsupervised multi-class domain adaptation (multi-class UDA) has recently been proposed to fill the gap between empirically practical methods for multi-class classification and well-founded theory with the setting of binary classification. Nevertheless, the multi-class UDA methods use model predictions to characterize the disagreement of multi-class scoring hypotheses, which is used to optimize the divergence between domain distributions. Such self-training manner may bring inaccurate model predictions, which would damage the target structure due to the absence of labels of the target domain, leading to sub-optimal performance. On the other hand, this disagreement between multi-class scoring hypotheses does not involve the relationships among all of the multiple classes. It causes that multi-class UDA cannot properly connect the advanced practical UDA methods that consider class-conditional distribution alignment. Thus, we propose to exploit the target structure information and then incorporate it into multi-class UDA to achieve class-conditional distribution alignment. We theoretically and experimentally explain the importance of accurate target structure information to reduce the expected error on the target domain. Notably, our method achieves state-of-the-art results on three commonly-used benchmarks with different scales. In addition, using the target structure information, we propose a variant to cope with noisy open-world source domains such as noisy labels and out-of-distribution samples, enhancing the robustness of our method. | 2023 | FedCPC: An Effective Federated Contrastive Learning Method for Privacy Preserving Early-Stage Alzheimers Speech DetectionabstractThe early-stage Alzheimer’s disease (AD) detection has been considered an important field of medical studies. Like traditional machine learning methods, speech-based automatic detection also suffers from data privacy risks because the data of specific patients are exclusive to each medical institution. A common practice is to use federated learning to protect the patients’ data privacy. However, its distributed learning process also causes performance reduction. To alleviate this problem while protecting user privacy, we propose a federated contrastive pre-training (FedCPC) performed before federated training for AD speech detection, which can learn a better representation from raw data and enables different clients to share data in the pre-training and training stages. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed methods can achieve satisfactory performance while preserving data privacy. | 2023 | Learning Disentangled Meaning and Style Representations for Positive Text ReframingabstractThe positive text reframing (PTR) task which generates a text giving a positive perspective with preserving the sense of the input text, has attracted considerable attention as one of the NLP applications.Due to the significant representation capability of the pre-trained language model (PLM), a beneficial baseline can be easily obtained by just fine-tuning the PLM.However, how to interpret a diversity of contexts to give a positive perspective is still an open problem.Especially, it is more serious when the size of the training data is limited. In this paper, we present a PTR framework, that learns representations where the meaning and style of text are disentangled. The method utilizes pseudopositive reframing datasets which are generated with two augmentation strategies.A simple but effective multi-task learning-based model is applied to fuse the generation capabilities from these datasets.Experimental results on Positive Psychology Frames (PPF) dataset, show that our approach outperforms the baselines, BART by five and T5 by six evaluation metrics. Our source codes and data are available online. | 2023 | Reprogramming Self-supervised Learning-based Speech Representations for Speaker AnonymizationabstractCurrent speaker anonymization methods, especially with self-supervised learning (SSL) models, require massive computational resources when hiding speaker identity. This paper proposes an effective and parameter-efficient speaker anonymization method based on recent End-to-End model reprogramming technology. To improve the anonymization performance, we first extract speaker representation from large SSL models as the speaker identifies. To hide the speaker’s identity, we reprogram the speaker representation by adapting the speaker to a pseudo domain. Extensive experiments are carried out on the VoicePrivacy Challenge (VPC) 2022 datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed parameter-efficient learning anonymization methods. Additionally, while achieving comparable performance with the VPC 2022 strong baseline 1.b, our approach also consumes less computational resources during anonymization. | 2023 | Vision-Language Navigation for Quadcopters with Conditional Transformer and Prompt-based Text RephraserabstractControlling drones with natural language instructions is an important topic in Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN). However, previous models can not effectively guide drones with the integration of multimodal features, as few of them exploit the correlations between instructions and the environmental contexts and consider the model’s capacity to understand natural languages. Therefore, we propose a novel language-enhanced cross-modal model that has a conditional Transformer to effectively integrate the multimodal features, i.e., the textual instructions and visual contexts. To enhance the ability of language representation, we also employ SentenceBERT. In addition, to address the issue that users could provide various textual instructions even for the same navigation task, we propose a prompt-based approach by introducing an LLM-based intermediary component (LLMIR) for rephrasing users’ instructions. We evaluate our approaches with a quadcopter simulator. Our model improves the absolute task completion rate by 1.39%. To evaluate LLMIR, we create a new test set by extracting the essential and minimal instructions from the original test set. By using the LLM, the task completion rate improves by 1.51%. And it narrows the performance gap between new and original test set by 34.83%. Jiyi Li, Fumiyo Fukumoto, Peng Liu 0027, Yoshimi Suzuki

GhostVec: A New Threat to Speaker Privacy of End-to-End Speech Recognition SystemabstractSpeaker adaptation systems face privacy concerns, for such systems are trained on private datasets and often overfitting. This paper demonstrates that an attacker can extract speaker information by querying speaker-adapted speech recognition (ASR) systems. We focus on the speaker information of a transformer-based ASR and propose GhostVec, a simple and efficient attack method to extract the speaker information from an encoder-decoder-based ASR system without any external speaker verification system or natural human voice as a reference. To make our results quantitative, we pre-process GhostVec using singular value decomposition (SVD) and synthesize it into waveform. Experiment results show that the synthesized audio of GhostVec reaches 10.83% EER and 0.47 minDCF with target speakers, which suggests the effectiveness of the proposed method. | 2023 | EEDN: Enhanced Encoder-Decoder Network with Local and Global Context Learning for POI RecommendationabstractThe point-of-interest (POI) recommendation predicts users' destinations, which might be of interest to users and has attracted considerable attention as one of the major applications in location-based social networks (LBSNs). Recent work on graph-based neural networks (GNN) or matrix factorization-based (MF) approaches has resulted in better representations of users and POIs to forecast users' latent preferences. However, they still suffer from the implicit feedback and cold-start problems of check-in data, as they cannot capture both local and global graph-based relations among users (or POIs) simultaneously, and the cold-start neighbors are not handled properly during graph convolution in GNN. In this paper, we propose an enhanced encoder-decoder network (EEDN) to exploit rich latent features between users, POIs, and interactions between users and POIs for POI recommendation. The encoder of EEDN utilizes a hybrid hypergraph convolution to enhance the aggregation ability of each graph convolution step and learns to derive more robust cold-start-aware user representations. In contrast, the decoder mines local and global interactions by both graph- and sequential-based patterns for modeling implicit feedback, especially to alleviate exposure bias. Extensive experiments in three public real-world datasets demonstrate that EEDN outperforms state-of-the-art methods. | 2023 | Multiview Representation Learning from Crowdsourced Triplet ComparisonsabstractCrowdsourcing has been used to collect data at scale in numerous fields. Triplet similarity comparison is a type of crowdsourcing task, in which crowd workers are asked the question “among three given objects, which two are more similar?”, which is relatively easy for humans to answer. However, the comparison can be sometimes based on multiple views, i.e., different independent attributes such as color and shape. Each view may lead to different results for the same three objects. Although an algorithm was proposed in prior work to produce multiview embeddings, it involves at least two problems: (1) the existing algorithm cannot independently predict multiview embeddings for a new sample, and (2) different people may prefer different views. In this study, we propose an end-to-end inductive deep learning framework to solve the multiview representation learning problem. The results show that our proposed method can obtain multiview embeddings of any object, in which each view corresponds to an independent attribute of the object. We collected two datasets from a crowdsourcing platform to experimentally investigate the performance of our proposed approach compared to conventional baseline methods. | 2022 | Improving Pairwise Rank Aggregation via Querying for Rank DifferenceabstractPairwise rank aggregation (PRA) aims at learning a ranking from pairwise comparisons between objects that specify their relative ordering. The present study proposes the use of rank difference information for PRA, which characterizes the extent winners in paired comparisons beat their opponents. While such information can be effortlessly recognized by annotators, to our knowledge, it has not been utilized for PRA before. The challenge is three-fold: how to solicit such information, how to utilize it in rank aggregation, and how to overcome the noise from heterogeneous annotators. This study proposes a new query for soliciting information about rank difference that imposes limited cognitive burden on annotators. As prior methods for PRA abounds, it is of interest to empower them with information on rank difference. To this end, this study proposes a conservative learning objective that can be combined seamlessly with many existing PRA algorithms. The third contribution is a new method for PRA called mixture of exponentials (MoE). Annotators from a heterogeneous population might have diverse views concerning rank difference. For example, an annotator might be good at recognizing rank difference only for a subset of items but not the rest. This means that information about rank difference is likely to be perturbed. Unfortunately, such an object-dependent error pattern cannot be modeled with existing approaches. MoE assumes that each annotator uses a mixture of ranking functions in generating answers, and the mixture components can capture object-related patterns in data. The present study evaluates the proposals with extensive experiments on both real and synthetic datasets. The results confirm the efficacy of the proposals and shed light on their practical usage. | 2022 | Adversarial Speech Generation and Natural Speech Recovery for Speech Content ProtectionabstractWith the advent of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and increasing privacy concerns, the sharing of speech data is faced with significant challenges. Protecting the sensitive content of speech is the same important as the voiceprint. This paper proposes an effective speech content protection method by constructing a frame-by-frame adversarial speech generation system. We revisited the adversarial examples generating method in the recent machine learning field and selected the phonetic state sequence of sensitive speech for the adversarial examples generation. We build an adversarial speech collection. Moreover, based on the speech collection, we proposed a neural network-based frame-by-frame mapping method to recover the speech content by converting from the adversarial speech to the human speech. Experiment shows our proposed method can encode and recover any sensitive audio, and our method is easy to be conducted with publicly available resources of speech recognition technology. | 2022 | Multi-Domain Dialogue State Tracking with Top-K Slot Self AttentionabstractAs an important component of task-oriented dialogue systems, dialogue state tracking is designed to track the dialogue state through the conversations between users and systems.Multi-domain dialogue state tracking is a challenging task, in which the correlation among different domains and slots needs to consider.Recently, slot self-attention is proposed to provide a data-driven manner to handle it.However, a full-support slot self-attention may involve redundant information interchange. In this paper, we propose a top-k attention-based slot self-attention for multi-domain dialogue state tracking. In the slot self-attention layers, we force each slot to involve information from the other k prominent slots and mask the rest out.The experimental results on two mainstream multi-domain task-oriented dialogue datasets, MultiWOZ 2.0 and MultiWOZ 2.4, present that our proposed approach is effective to improve the performance of multi-domain dialogue state tracking. We also find that the best result is obtained when each slot interchanges information with only a few slots. | 2022 | Context-based Collective Preference Aggregation for Prioritizing Crowd Opinions in Social Decision-makingabstractGiven a social issue that needs to be solved, decision-makers need to listen to the crowd opinions and preferences. However, existing online voting systems with limited capabilities cannot conduct such investigations. Our idea is that decision-makers can collect many human opinions from crowds on the web and then prioritize them for social decision-making. A solution of the prioritization entails collecting a large amount of pairwise preference comparisons from crowds and utilizing the aggregated preference labels as the collective preferences on the opinions. In practice, because there is a large number of combinations of all candidate opinion pairs, we can only collect a small number of labels for a small subset of pairs. How to utilize only a small number of pairwise crowd preferences on the opinions to estimate collective preferences is the problem. Existing works on preference aggregation methods for general scenarios utilize only the pairwise preference labels. In our scenario, additional contextual information, such as the text contents of the opinions, can potentially promote the aggregation performance. Therefore, we propose preference aggregation approaches that can effectively incorporate contextual information by externally or internally building the relations between the opinion contexts and preference scores. We propose approaches for both the homogeneous and heterogeneous settings of modeling the evaluators. The experiments conducted on real datasets collected from real-world crowdsourcing platform show that our approaches can generate better aggregation results than the baselines for estimating collective preferences, especially when there are only a small number of preference labels available. | 2020 | A Neural Local Coherence Analysis Model for Clarity Text ScoringabstractLocal coherence relation between two phrases/sentences, such as cause-effect, and contrast gives a strong influence on whether a text is well-structured or not. This paper follows the assumption and presents a method for scoring text clarity by utilizing local coherence between adjacent sentences. We hypothesize that the coherence knowledge learned from the different domain data is beneficial for capturing a well-structured text and thus helpful for scoring text clarity. We propose a text clarity scoring method that utilizes local coherence analysis with an out-domain setting, i.e., the training data for the source and target tasks are different from each other. The method based on the pre-trained language model BERT firstly trains the local coherence model as an auxiliary manner and then re-trains it together with the text clarity scoring model. The experimental results by using the PeerRead benchmark dataset show the improvement compared with a single model, scoring text clarity model 1 . | 2020 | CrowDEA: Multi-View Idea Prioritization with CrowdsabstractGiven a set of ideas collected from crowds with regard to an open-ended question, how can we organize and prioritize them in order to determine the preferred ones based on preference comparisons by crowd evaluators? As there are diverse latent criteria for the value of an idea, multiple ideas can be considered as “the best”. In addition, evaluators can have different preference criteria, and their comparison results often disagree. In this paper, we propose an analysis method for obtaining a subset of ideas, which we call frontier ideas, that are the best in terms of at least one latent evaluation criterion. We propose an approach, called CrowDEA, which estimates the embeddings of the ideas in the multiple-criteria preference space, the best viewpoint for each idea, and preference criterion for each evaluator, to obtain a set of frontier ideas. Experimental results using real datasets containing numerous ideas or designs demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively prioritize ideas from multiple viewpoints, thereby detecting frontier ideas. The embeddings of ideas learned by the proposed approach provide a visualization that facilitates observation of the frontier ideas. In addition, the proposed approach prioritizes ideas from a wider variety of viewpoints, whereas the baselines tend to use to the same viewpoints; it can also handle various viewpoints and prioritize ideas in situations where only a limited number of evaluators or labels are available. | 2020 | Performance as a Constraint: An Improved Wisdom of Crowds Using Performance RegularizationabstractQuality assurance is one of the most important problems in crowdsourcing and human computation, and it has been extensively studied from various aspects. Typical approaches for quality assurance include unsupervised approaches such as introducing task redundancy (i.e., asking the same question to multiple workers and aggregating their answers) and supervised approaches such as using worker performance on past tasks or injecting qualification questions into tasks in order to estimate the worker performance. In this paper, we propose to utilize the worker performance as a global constraint for inferring the true answers. The existing semi-supervised approaches do not consider such use of qualification questions. We also propose to utilize the constraint as a regularizer combined with existing statistical aggregation methods. The experiments using heterogeneous multiple-choice questions demonstrate that the performance constraint not only has the power to estimate the ground truths when used by itself, but also boosts the existing aggregation methods when used as a regularizer. | 2020 | AffectI: A Game for Diverse, Reliable, and Efficient Affective Image AnnotationabstractAn important application of affective image annotation is affective image content analysis, which aims to automatically understand the emotion being brought to viewers by image contents. The so-called subjective perception issue, i.e., different viewers may have different emotional responses to the same image, makes it difficult to link image features with the expected perceived emotion. Due to the ability to learn features, recent deep learning technologies have opened a new window on affective image content analysis, which has led to a growing demand for affective image annotation technologies to build large reliable training datasets. This paper proposes a novel affective image annotation technique, AffectI, for efficiently collecting diverse and reliable emotional labels with the estimate emotion distribution for images based on the concept of Game With a Purpose (GWAP). AffectI features three novel mechanisms: a selection mechanism for ensuring all emotion words being fairly evaluated for collecting diverse and reliable labels; an estimation mechanism for estimating the emotion distribution by aggregating partial pairwise comparisons of the emotion words for collecting the labels effectively and efficiently; an incentive mechanism shows the comparison between current player and her opponents as well as all past players to promote the interest of players and also contributes the reliability and diversity. Our experimental results demonstrate that AffectI is superior to existing methods in terms of being able to collect more diverse and reliable labels. The advantage of using GWAP for reducing the frustration of evaluators was also confirmed through subjective evaluation. Xingkun Zuo, Jiyi Li, Qili Zhou, Jianjun Li 0001, Xiaoyang Mao

Crowdsourced Text Sequence Aggregation based on Hybrid Reliability and RepresentationabstractThe crowd is cheaper and easier to access than the oracle to collect the ground truth data for training and evaluating models. To ensure the quality of the crowdsourced data, people can assign multiple crowd workers to one question and then aggregate the multiple answers with diverse quality into a golden one. In the areas of IR and NLP, the ground truth data of many tasks are text sequences. To aggregate multiple crowdsourced text sequences with diverse quality, the methods adapted from the existing answer aggregation methods which are proposed for labels (e.g., categories) only focus on one-sided reliability and do not fully utilize the rich information in text sequences. We thus propose a crowdsourced text sequence aggregation method which can capture the hybrid reliability information, i.e., the local question-wise reliability of text answers and global dataset-wise reliability of crowd workers. For the local reliability, it also incorporates the text similarities from hybrid representation, i.e., the text embeddings and word sequences. The experiments based on real crowdsourced datasets show that our method outperforms the baselines which only utilize one-sided reliability and one-sided representation. Our method can effectively leverage the rich information of text sequences. Jiyi Li

Text Categorization by Learning Predominant Sense of Words as Auxiliary TaskabstractDistributions of the senses of words are often highly skewed and give a strong influence of the domain in a document. This paper follows the assumption and presents a method for text categorization by leveraging the predominant sense of words depending on the domain, i.e., domain-specific senses. The key idea is that the features learned from predominant senses are possible to discriminate the domain of the document and thus improve the overall performance of text categorization. We propose a multi-task learning framework based on the neural network model, transformer, which trains a model to simultaneously categorize documents and predicts a predominant sense for each word. The experimental results using four benchmark datasets including RCV1 show that our method is comparable to the state-of-the-art categorization approach, especially our model works well for categorization of multi-label documents. | 2018 | HFT-CNN: Learning Hierarchical Category Structure for Multi-label Short Text CategorizationabstractWe focus on the multi-label categorization task for short texts and explore the use of a hierarchical structure (HS) of categories. In contrast to the existing work using non-hierarchical flat model, the method leverages the hierarchical relations between the categories to tackle the data sparsity problem. The lower the HS level, the worse the categorization performance.Because lower categories are fine-grained and the amount of training data per category is much smaller than that in an upper level. We propose an approach which can effectively utilize the data in the upper levels to contribute categorization in the lower levels by applying a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with a finetuning technique. The results using two benchmark datasets show that the proposed method, Hierarchical Fine-Tuning based CNN (HFT-CNN) is competitive with the state-of-the-art CNN based methods. | 2018 | Simultaneous Clustering and Ranking from Pairwise ComparisonsabstractWhen people make decisions with a number of ideas, designs, or other kinds of objects, one attempt is probably to organize them into several groups of objects and to prioritize them according to some preference. The grouping task is referred to as clustering and the prioritizing task is called as ranking. These tasks are often outsourced with the help of human judgments in the form of pairwise comparisons. Two objects are compared on whether they are similar in the clustering problem, while the object of higher priority is determined in the ranking problem. Our research question in this paper is whether the pairwise comparisons for clustering also help ranking (and vice versa). Instead of solving the two tasks separately, we propose a unified formulation to bridge the two types of pairwise comparisons. Our formulation simultaneously estimates the object embeddings and the preference criterion vector. The experiments using real datasets support our hypothesis; our approach can generate better neighbor and preference estimation results than the approaches that only focus on a single type of pairwise comparisons. | 2017 | Hyper Questions: Unsupervised Targeting of a Few Experts in CrowdsourcingabstractQuality control is one of the major problems in crowdsourcing. One of the primary approaches to rectify this issue is to assign the same task to different workers and then aggregate their answers to obtain a reliable answer. In addition to simple aggregation approaches such as majority voting, various sophisticated probabilistic models have been proposed. However, given that most of the existing methods operate by strengthening the opinions of the majority, these models often fail when the tasks require highly specialized knowledge and the ability of a large majority of the workers is inadequate. In this paper, we focus on an important class of answer aggregation problems in which majority voting fails and propose the concept of hyper questions to devise effective aggregation methods. A hyper question is a set of single questions, and our key idea is that experts are more likely to provide correct answers to all of the single questions included in a hyper question than non-experts. Thus, experts are more likely to reach consensus on the hyper questions than non-experts, which strengthen their influences. We incorporate the concept of hyper questions into existing answer aggregation methods. The results of our experiments conducted using both synthetic datasets and real datasets demonstrate that our simple and easily usable approach works effectively in cases where only a few experts are available. | 2015 | Reachability based Ranking in Interactive Image RetrievalabstractIn some interactive image retrieval systems, users can select images from image search results and click to view their similar or related images until they reach the targets. Existing image ranking options are based on relevance, update time, interestingness and so on. Because the inexact description of user targets or unsatisfying performance of image retrieval methods, it is possible that users cannot reach their targets in single-round interaction. When we consider multi-round interactions, how to assist users to select the images that are easier to reach the targets in fewer rounds is a useful issue. In this paper, we propose a new kind of ranking option to users by ranking the images according to their difficulties of reaching potential targets. We model the interactive image search behavior as navigation on information network constructed by an image collection and an image retrieval method. We use the properties of this information network for reachability based ranking. Experiments based on a social image collection show the efficiency of our approach. Jiyi Li

Document similarity computation by combining multiple representation modelsabstractEvaluating semantic similarity of text document pairs is an active research topic. Various models of document representation have been proposed. Each kind of representation model concentrates on a different kind of information from other kind of models. However, it is difficult for a single model to perform well in all scenarios because of the variety of textual documents. Leveraging these models to complement each other is possible to improve the performance. In this paper, we first make an analysis on the relations among document semantic similarity, human ratings and model performance. Based on the observations, we propose a rational solution of selecting different representation models and fusing the results of these models to compute document similarity for a given document collection. We leverage the performance and relations of different models to select proper models. Our fusion approach proposes a regression function with both nonlinear and linear factors and dynamic weights based on the similarities by various models. We report the effectiveness of our work based on a rated news document collection. The particular version of our general approach for this collection can integrate the information from both brief entity knowledge and detailed word content. | 2011 | Context-based image re-ranking for content-based image retrievalabstractIn the area of content based image retrieval, people always use the image similarity based on the concrete image parameters like color to rank the images. However the ranking criteria based on image similarity directly is not so significant enough because many images in the given large-scale image database have the approximate similarities to a given image. We propose a graph-based mutual reinforcement method which utilize both of the inter- and intra- relationships among the content and context of the images for re-ranking the similar images. After the re-ranking, we could enlarge the relative-ranking-score-difference of the images, so that the search result becomes more significance. On the other hand our method could also improve the quality of the search result on the metrics such as MAP, recall and precision. The experiments based on the images from the social images hosting websites show the efficiency of our method. Jiyi Li
