2024 Self-Contained Dual-Input Interferometric Receiver for Paralleled-Multichannel Wireless Systems
abstract
In this paper, a self-contained dual-input receiver architecture based on the interferometric technique is proposed and demonstrated for the first time for paralleled-multichannel wireless systems. Different from conventional counterparts, the proposed receiver consists of dual-input RF channel paths, and only one sole hardware is used to realize frequency translation, i.e., the conversion to intermediate frequency (IF) band. Demodulated IF signals can be extracted from two output ports instead of four ports in legacy multiport systems, thereby further reducing circuit complexity, size, cost, and power consumption. A mathematical model of the receiver architecture is formulated and applied to examine its modes of operation. For the proof of concept, a dual-band and dual-polarized prototype RX frontend is designed and fabricated to validate the proposed architecture. The transmission and demodulation of multiple digital modulation signals including QPSK, 16-QAM, 32-QAM, and 64-QAM are successfully demonstrated experimentally. Those measured results confirm that the proposed receiver architecture achieves good and desired performances. Based on the proposed self-contained dual-input receiver architecture, a multiband and multifunction polarization-diversified wireless system featuring compact size, low-cost, and low-power consumption suitable for 5G, 6G, and beyond can be realized.

2022 Far-Field Wireless Power Harvesting: Nonlinear Modeling, Rectenna Design, and Emerging Applications
abstract
Continuous advances in ultralow-power electronics are a fundamental driving force of developing far-field wireless power harvesting techniques, which generally harnesses low/ambient energy in free space or dedicated wireless power from a power base station. This article reviews recent developments and technology trends in far-field (radiative) wireless power harvesting, including modeling of rectification process inside nonlinear devices, insights into rectenna system design, and demonstrations of emerging applications. The rectification process inside nonlinear devices will be explored, upon which a device selection guideline is provided to help quickly identify suitable devices. Then, the optimization of rectenna design is discussed to realize efficiency enhancement at a limited input power level. Since far-field wireless power harvesting has become a critical enabling technology for battery-free Internet of Things, a series of promising applications is demonstrated in this article to highlight the challenges and opportunities in the field.

2021 Dynamic Ambient RF Energy Density Measurements of Montreal for Battery-Free IoT Sensor Network Planning
abstract
This work summarizes an outdoor dynamic measurement of ambient radiofrequency (RF) power density in the core areas of Montreal city, which can eventually be exploited for possible battery-free Internet of Things (IoT) sensor network planning. The measurement covers a frequency range of 400-2700 MHz. The power density along major streets, roads, and highways is captured and analyzed, which differs from previous stationary measurements. Results indicate that cellular communication bands (GSM/LTE850 and LTE700) are the best choice for RF energy recycling in downtown (populated) areas. The largest average power levels of GSM/LTE850 and LTE700 bands are -35.50 and -36.95 dBm, respectively. In contrast, in suburban areas where cellular communication signals are generally weak, the digital television band with a peak level of -47.68 dBm presents the largest among all frequency bands. Moreover, one separate measurement at a fixed location is conducted on a typical workday to study the effects of foot traffic on ambient RF power density. Results illustrate that no obvious fluctuations are detected during this daytime measurement. For example, both average power levels of GSM/LTE850 and LTE700 remain at a relatively stable level of -25 dBm throughout the measurement. With the advance of far-field wireless power transfer and backscattering techniques, ambient RF power-enabled battery-free IoT sensors are feasible and will contribute to the planning and implementation of a smarter and greener city.

2021 Accurately Modeling Zero-Bias Diode-Based RF Power Harvesters With Wide Adaptability to Frequency and Power
abstract
This paper proposes an analytical method for effectively evaluating the performances of zero-bias diode-based RF power harvesters. The method allows the accurate calculation of both the diode power conversion efficiency (PCE) and matching efficiency, while showing the wide adaptability to frequency and input power. To calculate the diode PCE accurately, the junction voltage is built based on modeling the diode junction capacitance and turn-on voltage. Using the accurate diode PCE, the equivalent nonlinear resistance of the diode is calculated, and thus the diode impedance is obtained. This helps to design a matching network with required bandwidths and evaluate the corresponding matching efficiency. The total PCE of the RF power harvester is finally obtained by multiplying the diode PCE and matching efficiency. For verification, dual-band RF power harvesters based on diodes of SMS7630 and HSMS-2850 are developed to cover the two 5G frequency bands for three telecom operators in China (2.515-2.675, 3.4-3.5 & 3.5-3.6 GHz). They are designed to operate in the low power range of −25-−5 dBm for low power harvesting scenarios. Compared with the simulated results, the calculation discrepancy of less than 3.12% can be achieved in evaluating the total PCEs of the RF power harvesters. Prototypes of the designed RF power harvesters were fabricated and measured for validation. It shows that the proposed analytical method can provide design guidelines for developing a multi-band RF power harvester.

2017 Terahertz RF Electronics and System Integration [Scanning the Issue]
abstract
With the advent and fast-paced development of ultrahighspeed digital interconnects for next-generation computing systems, low-latency broadband wireless communications for fifth generation and beyond, high-resolution imaging techniques and emerging parametric sensing systems for medical/biomedical and security applications, material and structure analyses and evaluations, and deep-space radio astrophysics, and so on, the search for system solutions with larger bandwidth has sparked a growing research in expanding the electromagnetic spectrum into the terahertz (THz) regime. Generally, the THz frequency covers 300 GHz through 10 THz, which presents the most fundamental spect rum gap between elect ronics and photonics.

2014 Radio-Frequency Rectifier for Electromagnetic Energy Harvesting: Development Path and Future Outlook
abstract
The roadmap evolution and historical milestones of electromagnetic energy conversion techniques and related breakthroughs over the years are reviewed and presented with particular emphasis on low-density energy-harvest technologies. Electromagnetic sources responsible for the presence of ambient radio-frequency (RF) energy are examined and discussed. The effective use and recycling of such an ambient electromagnetic energy are the most relevant and critical issue for the current and future practicability of wireless energyharvesting devices and systems. In this paper, a set of performance criteria and development considerations, required to meet the need of applications of ambient electromagnetic energy harvesting, are also derived from the radiating source analysis. The criteria can be calculated from a simple measurement of the I-V nonlinear behavior of RF rectification devices such as diodes and transistors, as well as linear frequency behavior (S-parameters). The existing rectifying devices are then reviewed in light of the defined performance criteria. Finally, a technological outlook of the performances that can be expected from different device technologies is assessed and discussed. Since the proposed spindiode technology would present the most promising device platform in the development of the most useful ambient energy harvesters, a special highlight of this disruptive scheme is provided in the presentation of this work.

2012 Substrate-Integrated Millimeter-Wave and Terahertz Antenna Technology
abstract
Significant advances in the development of millimeter-wave and terahertz (30–10 000 GHz) technologies have been made to cope with the increasing interest in this still not fully explored electromagnetic spectrum. The nature of electromagnetic waves over this frequency range is well suited for the development of high-resolution imaging applications, molecular-sensitive spectroscopic devices, and ultrabroadband wireless communications. In this paper, millimeter-wave and terahertz antenna technologies are overviewed including the conventional and nonconventional planar/nonplanar antenna structures based on different platforms. As a promising technological platform, substrate-integrated circuits (SICs) attract more and more attention. Various substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) schemes and other synthesized guide techniques have been widely employed in the design of antennas and arrays. Different types of substrate-integrated antennas and beamforming networks are discussed with respect to theoretical and experimental results in connection with electrical and mechanical performances.
