D&M: Enriching E-commerce Videos with Sound Effects by Key Moment Detection and SFX MatchingabstractVideos showcasing specific products are increasingly important for E-commerce. Key moments naturally exist as the first appearance of a specific product, presentation of its distinctive features, the presence of a buying link, etc. Adding proper sound effects (SFX) to such moments, or video decoration with SFX (VDSFX), is crucial for enhancing user engaging experience. Previous work adds SFX to videos by video-to-SFX matching at a holistic level, lacking the ability of adding SFX to a specific moment. Meanwhile, previous studies on video highlight detection or video moment retrieval consider only moment localization, leaving moment to SFX matching untouched. By contrast, we propose in this paper D&M, a unified method that accomplishes key moment detection and moment-to-SFX matching simultaneously. Moreover, for the new VDSFX task we build a large-scale dataset SFX-Moment from an E-commerce video creation platform. For a fair comparison, we build competitive baselines by extending a number of current video moment detection methods to the new task. Extensive experiments on SFX-Moment show the superior performance of the proposed method over the baselines. Minquan Wang, Bo Wang 0011, Aozhu Chen, Quan Chen 0006, Peng Jiang 0002, Xirong Li 0001

Hyperspherical Dynamic Multi-Prototype with Arguments Dependencies and Role Consistency for Event Argument ExtractionabstractEvent Argument Extraction (EAE) aims to identify arguments and assign them to predefined roles within a document. Existing methods face challenges in modeling intra-class variance and inter-class ambiguity, hindering accurate role assignment. Inspired by how humans dynamically adjust classification criteria while maintaining category consistency (e.g., distinguishing ''Victim'' and ''Attacker'' roles based on contextual relationships), we propose a HDMAR (Hyperspherical Dynamic Multi-Prototype with Arguments Dependencies and Role Consistency) method, where three innovations tackle these challenges: (1) Hyperspherical dynamic multi-prototype learning is used to capture intra-role diversity and enforce inter-role separation via hyperspherical optimization and optimal transport, (2) cross-event role consistency is used to align role representations across events, and (3) an arguments dependencies-guided encoding module enhances contextual understanding of intra-event and inter-event dependencies. Experiments on RAMS and WikiEvents demonstrate gains in accuracy, with further analysis validating the contributions of each module. | 2025 | Conditional-Balanced Adversarial Delta Tuning for Cross-Domain Implicit Discourse Relation RecognitionabstractImplicit discourse relation recognition (IDRR) is faced with a domain dilemma. Recent studies have achieved breakthroughs in standard datasets, while they are not appropriate in domains with insufficient data, such as bio-medicine. In this paper, we treat this problem as a cross-domain IDRR task, which transfers knowledge from the source domain to improve the understanding of the target domain. However, cross-domain IDRR is supervised and suffers from striking domain gaps, and general domain adaptation methods are not applicable. Therefore, we propose a Conditional-Balanced Adversarial Delta Tuning (CBADT) framework, which 1) leverages delta tuning to mine the dense domain-specific knowledge in low-resource scenarios; 2) builds a conditional adversarial verbalizer to inject domain-invariant knowledge into soft prompts; 3) proposes a domain label fusion method to balance domain-specific label words and fit the hybrid features from two domains. Experiments on both Chinese and English corpora demonstrate the transferability of our model. Haodong Zhao, Ruifang He, Bo Wang 0011

Enhancing GraphRAG with Syntactic Knowledge and Mixture-of-Experts for Knowledge-Intensive QAabstractKnowledge-intensive question answering (QA) requires deep reasoning over heterogeneous sources and factually consistent answers, but existing RAG and GraphRAG frameworks are limited by surface-level semantic similarity-causing multi-hop inference and entity disambiguation errors. This work proposes a GraphRAG enhancement integrating two core components: 1) syntactic knowledge infusion (via dependency parsing and structural prompts) to align retrieval/context evidence with complex questions' compositional logic; 2) a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) module for dynamic expert selection, optimizing multi-hop reasoning and cross-domain generalization. Evaluations on QALD-h, DBpedia QA, and MetaQA show state-of-the-art performance across exact match, factual consistency, and structural fidelity. Ablation/qualitative analyses confirm that syntactic scaffolding plus expert specialization boosts accuracy, interpretability, robustness, and generalizability. This study establishes a new knowledge-intensive QA paradigm, highlighting the value of unifying explicit structural modeling with dynamic modular reasoning. Zhengyu Ma, Xiaojia Jin, Bo Wang 0011

Balancing Precision and Generalization: Dynamic Instruction Generation for Model Adaptive Zero-Shot Reasoning in LLMsabstractCurrent research shows that providing instructions to guide Large Language Models (LLMs) improves reasoning tasks, but existing methods struggle to balance accuracy and generalization. Manually crafted instructions tailored to specific LLMs and tasks improve performance but reduce generalizability, while more general instructions lack detail and lower performance. To address this, we propose a dynamic instruction-generation method using an Instruction-Generation Prompt (IGP). IGP categorizes problems into domains and integrates the model's capabilities to generate detailed task-specific instructions, resulting in a comprehensive plan. This approach achieves high precision with general prompts without requiring in-depth knowledge of LLMs or tasks. We validated our method across five LLMs and ten datasets in three task categories. Our dynamically generated instructions outperformed traditionally handcrafted, LLM-specific instructions across various LLMs and tasks. | 2025 | Enhancing Model Generalization for Efficient Cross-Device Side-Channel AnalysisabstractDeep learning (DL)-based techniques have garnered significant attention as an innovative method for profiled side-channel analysis (SCA). Despite their proven effectiveness, recent studies have highlighted challenges faced by DL-based profiled attacks in a more realistic portability threat model, where two devices are used respectively for profiling and the attack. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for cross-device attack by incorporating the Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model (DDPM) to develop a generalized model. Additionally, an adaptive multi-task loss is employed to balance multiple training objectives that respectively focus on model generalization and precision. We evaluate our strategy on five cross-device SCA datasets. The experimental results show that, compared to baseline methods, our approach achieves significantly enhanced performance, as measured by the number of traces required to recover the secret key. Specifically, on a more challenging dataset obtained from three SAKURA-G evaluation boards, our method successfully recovers the secret key using approximately 300 traces, whereas baseline methods fail to guarantee a successful cross-device attack even with 5,000 traces. Furthermore, our method demonstrates remarkably enhanced attack efficiency, reducing attack time by over an hour compared to the baselines. | 2024 | Emotion Recognition in Conversation via Dynamic PersonalityabstractEmotion recognition in conversation (ERC) is a field that aims to classify the emotion of each utterance within conversational contexts. This presents significant challenges, particularly in handling emotional ambiguity across various speakers and contextual factors. Existing ERC approaches have primarily focused on modeling conversational contexts while incorporating only superficial speaker attributes such as names, memories, and interactions. Recent works introduce personality as an essential deep speaker factor for emotion recognition, but relies on static personality, overlooking dynamic variability during conversations. Advances in personality psychology conceptualize personality as dynamic, proposing that personality states can change across situations. In this paper, we introduce ERC-DP, a novel model considering the dynamic personality of speakers during conversations. ERC-DP accounts for past utterances from the same speaker as situation impacting dynamic personality. It combines personality modeling with prompt design and fine-grained classification modules. Through a series of comprehensive experiments, ERC-DP demonstrates superior performance on three benchmark conversational datasets. | 2024 | A Comparative Study of Explicit and Implicit Gender Biases in Large Language Models via Self-evaluationabstractWhile extensive work has examined the explicit and implicit biases in large language models (LLMs), little research explores the relation between these two types of biases. This paper presents a comparative study of the explicit and implicit biases in LLMs grounded in social psychology. Social psychology distinguishes between explicit and implicit biases by whether the bias can be self-recognized by individuals. Aligning with this conceptualization, we propose a self-evaluation-based two-stage measurement of explicit and implicit biases within LLMs. First, the LLM is prompted to automatically fill templates with social targets to measure implicit bias toward these targets, where the bias is less likely to be self-recognized by the LLM. Then, the LLM is prompted to self-evaluate the templates filled by itself to measure explicit bias toward the same targets, where the bias is more likely to be self-recognized by the LLM. Experiments conducted on state-of-the-art LLMs reveal human-like inconsistency between explicit and implicit occupational gender biases. This work bridges a critical gap where prior studies concentrate solely on either explicit or implicit bias. We advocate that future work highlight the relation between explicit and implicit biases in LLMs. Yachao Zhao, Bo Wang 0011, Yan Wang 0059, Xiaojia Jin, Jijun Zhang, Ruifang He, Yuexian Hou

VIEMF: Multimodal metaphor detection via visual information enhancement with multimodal fusionabstractIn this paper, we study multimodal metaphor detection to obtain real semantic meaning from multiple heterogeneous information sources . The existing approaches mainly suffer from two drawbacks. (1) They focus on textual aspects, overlooking the characteristics of visual metaphor information. (2) Efficient methods for fusing multimodal metaphor features are lacking. To address the first issue, we propose a visual information enhancement method based on dual-granularity visual feature fusion , obtaining complete metaphorical visual features. To achieve bidirectional interaction among multimodal metaphor features, we further develop a multi-interactive crossmodal residual network (MCRN) that fuses the consistent and complementary information between different modalities and design a progressive fusion strategy to enhance the iterative fusion ability of the model. We extensively evaluate the proposed method on the popular Met-meme metaphor detection benchmark, outperforming the existing state-of-the-art methods by a large margins; i.e., we achieve F1 score improvements ranging from 1.47% to 2.55% under different languages. In addition, we further extend the evaluation to the Sarcasm dataset to validate the ability of the model to perceive semantic contrasts and meaning transformations, and the experimental results are superior to those of a strong baseline model . | 2024 | M3GAT: A Multi-modal, Multi-task Interactive Graph Attention Network for Conversational Sentiment Analysis and Emotion RecognitionabstractSentiment and emotion, which correspond to long-term and short-lived human feelings, are closely linked to each other, leading to the fact that sentiment analysis and emotion recognition are also two interdependent tasks in natural language processing (NLP). One task often leverages the shared knowledge from another task and performs better when solved in a joint learning paradigm. Conversational context dependency, multi-modal interaction, and multi-task correlation are three key factors that contribute to this joint paradigm. However, none of the recent approaches have considered them in a unified framework. To fill this gap, we propose a multi-modal, multi-task interactive graph attention network, termed M3GAT, to simultaneously solve the three problems. At the heart of the model is a proposed interactive conversation graph layer containing three core sub-modules, which are: (1) local-global context connection for modeling both local and global conversational context, (2) cross-modal connection for learning multi-modal complementary and (3) cross-task connection for capturing the correlation across two tasks. Comprehensive experiments on three benchmarking datasets, MELD, MEISD, and MSED, show the effectiveness of M3GAT over state-of-the-art baselines with the margin of 1.88%, 5.37%, and 0.19% for sentiment analysis, and 1.99%, 3.65%, and 0.13% for emotion recognition, respectively. In addition, we also show the superiority of multi-task learning over the single-task framework. | 2023 | CASE: Aligning Coarse-to-Fine Cognition and Affection for Empathetic Response GenerationabstractEmpathetic conversation is psychologically supposed to be the result of conscious alignment and interaction between the cognition and affection of empathy. However, existing empathetic dialogue models usually consider only the affective aspect or treat cognition and affection in isolation, which limits the capability of empathetic response generation. In this work, we propose the CASE model for empathetic dialogue generation. It first builds upon a commonsense cognition graph and an emotional concept graph and then aligns the user's cognition and affection at both the coarse-grained and fine-grained levels.Through automatic and manual evaluation, we demonstrate that CASE outperforms state-of-the-art baselines of empathetic dialogues and can generate more empathetic and informative responses.1 Jinfeng Zhou, Chujie Zheng, Bo Wang 0011, Zheng Zhang 0020, Minlie Huang

Supervised Domain Adaptation for Recognizing Retinal Diseases from Wide-Field Fundus ImagesabstractThis paper addresses the emerging task of recognizing multiple retinal diseases from wide-field (WF) and ultra-wide-field (UWF) fundus images. For an effective use of existing large amount of labeled color fundus photo (CFP) data and the relatively small amount of WF and UWF data, we propose a supervised domain adaptation method named Cross-domain Collaborative Learning (CdCL). Inspired by the success of fixed-ratio based mixup in unsupervised domain adaptation, we re-purpose this strategy for the current task. Due to the intrinsic disparity between the field-of-view of CFP and WF/UWF images, a scale bias naturally exists in a mixup sample that the anatomic structure from a CFP image will be considerably larger than its WF/UWF counterpart. The CdCL method resolves the issue by Scale-bias Correction, which employs Transformers for producing scale-invariant features. As demonstrated by extensive experiments on multiple datasets covering both WF and UWF images, the proposed method compares favorably against a number of competitive baselines. | 2023 | Grafting Fine-Tuning and Reinforcement Learning for Empathetic Emotion Elicitation in Dialog GenerationabstractFor human-like dialogue systems, it is significant to inject the empathetic ability or elicit the opposite’s positive emotions, while existing studies mostly only focus on either of the above two research lines. In this work, we propose a novel and grafted task named Empathetic Emotion Elicitation Dialog to make a dialog system able to possess both aspects of ability simultaneously. We do not train an empathetic dialog system and an emotion elicitation dialog system separately and then simply concatenate the responses generated by these two systems, which will cause illogical and repetitive responses. Instead, we propose a unified solution: (1) To generate empathetic responses and emotion elicitation responses within the same semantic space, we design a unified framework. (2) The unified framework has three stages which first retrieve the empathetic and emotion elicitation exemplars as external knowledge, then fine-tune the emotion/action prediction on a pre-trained language model to enhance the empathetic ability, and finally model the user feedback by reinforcement learning to enhance the emotion elicitation ability. Experiments show that our method outperforms the baselines in the response generation quality and simultaneously empathizes with the user and elicits their positive emotions. | 2022 | TopKG: Target-oriented Dialog via Global Planning on Knowledge GraphabstractTarget-oriented dialog aims to reach a global target through multi-turn conversation. The key to the task is the global planning towards the target, which flexibly guides the dialog concerning the context. However, existing target-oriented dialog works take a local and greedy strategy for response generation, where global planning is absent. In this work, we propose global planning for target-oriented dialog on a commonsense knowledge graph (KG). We design a global reinforcement learning with the planned paths to flexibly adjust the local response generation model towards the global target. We also propose a KG-based method to collect target-oriented samples automatically from the chit-chat corpus for model training. Experiments show that our method can reach the target with a higher success rate, fewer turns, and more coherent responses. Zhitong Yang, Bo Wang 0011, Jinfeng Zhou, Ruifang He, Yuexian Hou

CR-GIS: Improving Conversational Recommendation via Goal-aware Interest Sequence ModelingabstractConversational recommendation systems (CRS) aim to determine a goal item by sequentially tracking users’ interests through multi-turn conversation. In CRS, implicit patterns of user interest sequence guide the smooth transition of dialog utterances to the goal item. However, with the convenient explicit knowledge of knowledge graph (KG), existing KG-based CRS methods over-rely on the explicit separate KG links to model the user interests but ignore the rich goal-aware implicit interest sequence patterns in a dialog. In addition, interest sequence is also not fully used to generate smooth transited utterances. We propose CR-GIS with a parallel star framework. First, an interest-level star graph is designed to model the goal-aware implicit user interest sequence. Second, a hierarchical Star Transformer is designed to guide the multi-turn utterances generation with the interest-level star graph. Extensive experiments verify the effectiveness of CR-GIS in achieving more accurate recommended items with more fluent and coherent dialog utterances. | 2022 | Aligning Recommendation and Conversation via Dual ImitationabstractHuman conversations of recommendation naturally involve the shift of interests which can align the recommendation actions and conversation process to make accurate recommendations with rich explanations. However, existing conversational recommendation systems (CRS) ignore the advantage of user interest shift in connecting recommendation and conversation, which leads to an ineffective loose coupling structure of CRS.To address this issue, by modeling the recommendation actions as recommendation paths in a knowledge graph (KG), we propose DICR (Dual Imitation for Conversational Recommendation), which designs a dual imitation to explicitly align the recommendation paths and user interest shift paths in a recommendation module and a conversation module, respectively.By exchanging alignment signals, DICR achieves bidirectional promotion between recommendation and conversation modules and generates high-quality responses with accurate recommendations and coherent explanations.Experiments demonstrate that DICR outperforms the state-of-theart models on recommendation and conversation performance with automatic, human, and novel explainability metrics. | 2022 | Topic Model on Microblog with Dual-Streams Graph Convolution NetworksabstractTopic detection in social media is a challenging task due to the large-scale short and informal nature of messages. Existing methods choose to integrate structure or contexts among posts to alleviate the data sparsity of short text, however they ignore the spread characteristics of topics. A topic can spread in depth-wise and width-wise way on social networks. Specifically, wide dispersion gives priority to the paths that will spread to the low-order neighborhood, while deep propagation may spread to the more distant users along the propagation chains. Therefore, we propose a Dual-streams Graph convolution networks based Topic Model (DGTM) for microblog conversations. It aims to learn the contexts with full spread mode feature to alleviate data sparsity of microblog posts. Firstly, a user-level social network with posts information is built by the user interactions. Then, we design a dual-streams graph convolution networks module to learn the context-richer node embeddings by modeling spread characteristics. Lastly, the variational auto-encoder (VAE) is used to fuse the features of two spread modes and generate the more coherent topics. The experiments on three real-world datasets validate the effectiveness of our proposed model. Ruifang He, Bo Wang 0011

Onfocus detection: identifying individual-camera eye contact from unconstrained imagesabstractAbstract Onfocus detection aims at identifying whether the focus of the individual captured by a camera is on the camera or not. Based on the behavioral research, the focus of an individual during face-to-camera communication leads to a special type of eye contact, i.e., the individual-camera eye contact, which is a powerful signal in social communication and plays a crucial role in recognizing irregular individual status (e.g., lying or suffering mental disease) and special purposes (e.g., seeking help or attracting fans). Thus, developing effective onfocus detection algorithms is of significance for assisting the criminal investigation, disease discovery, and social behavior analysis. However, the review of the literature shows that very few efforts have been made toward the development of onfocus detector owing to the lack of large-scale public available datasets as well as the challenging nature of this task. To this end, this paper engages in the onfocus detection research by addressing the above two issues. Firstly, we build a large-scale onfocus detection dataset, named as the onfocus detection in the wild (OFDIW). It consists of 20623 images in unconstrained capture conditions (thus called “in the wild”) and contains individuals with diverse emotions, ages, facial characteristics, and rich interactions with surrounding objects and background scenes. On top of that, we propose a novel end-to-end deep model, i.e., the eye-context interaction inferring network (ECIIN), for onfocus detection, which explores eye-context interaction via dynamic capsule routing. Finally, comprehensive experiments are conducted on the proposed OFDIW dataset to benchmark the existing learning models and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ECIIN. | 2021 | CRFR: Improving Conversational Recommender Systems via Flexible Fragments Reasoning on Knowledge GraphsabstractAlthough paths of user interests shift in knowledge graphs (KGs) can benefit conversational recommender systems (CRS), explicit reasoning on KGs has not been well considered in CRS, due to the complex of high-order and incomplete paths. We propose CRFR, which effectively does explicit multi-hop reasoning on KGs with a conversational context-based reinforcement learning model.Considering the incompleteness of KGs, instead of learning single complete reasoning path, CRFR flexibly learns multiple reasoning fragments which are likely contained in the complete paths of interests shift.A fragments-aware unified model is then designed to fuse the fragments information from item-oriented and concept-oriented KGs to enhance the CRS response with entities and words from the fragments.Extensive experiments demonstrate CRFR's SOTA performance on recommendation, conversation and conversation interpretability. | 2021 | IDS: An Intelligent Data Semantics System for Communication Link Prediction in SIoTabstractThe establishment of communication link in Social Internet of Things is not only determined by personal interests, but also by neighbors’ influences. The influence of each neighbor is often independent and different. However, existing communication link prediction methods have not considered the semantic influence of each neighbor separately. Furthermore, the influence of each neighbor may work on multiple semantic levels, which is also not well considered. We propose a deep learning model to embed the multi-level semantic influence of each neighbor separately to predict communication links in SIoT, named as Intelligent Data Semantics (IDS) system. The IDS system captures the semantics of each neighbor’s influence on both local-level and global-level. The multi-level semantic influence integrated with topology information is then used to predict communication links in SIoT. Extensive experiments on four real social networks demonstrate that IDS outperforms the state-of-the-art models. Bo Wang 0011, Zunfu Huang, Meixian Song, Qinxue Jiang, Naixue Xiong

Social Recommendation with Implicit Social InfluenceabstractSocial influence is essential to social recommendation. Current influence-based social recommendation focuses on the explicit influence on observed social links. However, in real cases, implicit social influence can also impact users' preference in an unobserved way. In this work, we concern two kinds of implicit influence: Local Implicit Influence of persons on unobserved interpersonal relations, and Global Implicit Influence of items broadcasted to users. We improve the state-of-the-art GNN-based social recommendation methods by modeling two kinds of implicit influences separately. Local implicit influence is involved by predicting unobserved social relationships. Global implicit influence is involved by defining global popularity of each item and personalize the impact of the popularity on each user. In a GCN network, explicit and implicit influence are integrated to learn the social embedding of users and items in social recommendation. | 2021 | COVID-19 Chest CT Image Segmentation Network by Multi-Scale Fusion and Enhancement OperationsabstractA novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was detected and has spread rapidly across various countries around the world since the end of the year 2019. Computed Tomography (CT) images have been used as a crucial alternative to the time-consuming RT-PCR test. However, pure manual segmentation of CT images faces a serious challenge with the increase of suspected cases, resulting in urgent requirements for accurate and automatic segmentation of COVID-19 infections. Unfortunately, since the imaging characteristics of the COVID-19 infection are diverse and similar to the backgrounds, existing medical image segmentation methods cannot achieve satisfactory performance. In this article, we try to establish a new deep convolutional neural network tailored for segmenting the chest CT images with COVID-19 infections. We first maintain a large and new chest CT image dataset consisting of 165,667 annotated chest CT images from 861 patients with confirmed COVID-19. Inspired by the observation that the boundary of the infected lung can be enhanced by adjusting the global intensity, in the proposed deep CNN, we introduce a feature variation block which adaptively adjusts the global properties of the features for segmenting COVID-19 infection. The proposed FV block can enhance the capability of feature representation effectively and adaptively for diverse cases. We fuse features at different scales by proposing Progressive Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling to handle the sophisticated infection areas with diverse appearance and shapes. The proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance. Dice similarity coefficients are 0.987 and 0.726 for lung and COVID-19 segmentation, respectively. We conducted experiments on the data collected in China and Germany and show that the proposed deep CNN can produce impressive performance effectively. The proposed network enhances the segmentation ability of the COVID-19 infection, makes the connection with other techniques and contributes to the development of remedying COVID-19 infection. | 2021 | Attention-Guided Deep Neural Network With Multi-Scale Feature Fusion for Liver Vessel SegmentationabstractLiver vessel segmentation is fast becoming a key instrument in the diagnosis and surgical planning of liver diseases. In clinical practice, liver vessels are normally manual annotated by clinicians on each slice of CT images, which is extremely laborious. Several deep learning methods exist for liver vessel segmentation, however, promoting the performance of segmentation remains a major challenge due to the large variations and complex structure of liver vessels. Previous methods mainly using existing UNet architecture, but not all features of the encoder are useful for segmentation and some even cause interferences. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel deep neural network for liver vessel segmentation, called LVSNet, which employs special designs to obtain the accurate structure of the liver vessel. Specifically, we design Attention-Guided Concatenation (AGC) module to adaptively select the useful context features from low-level features guided by high-level features. The proposed AGC module focuses on capturing rich complemented information to obtain more details. In addition, we introduce an innovative multi-scale fusion block by constructing hierarchical residual-like connections within one single residual block, which is of great importance for effectively linking the local blood vessel fragments together. Furthermore, we construct a new dataset containing 40 thin thickness cases (0.625 mm) which consist of CT volumes and annotated vessels. To evaluate the effectiveness of the method with minor vessels, we also propose an automatic stratification method to split major and minor liver vessels. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed LVSNet outperforms previous methods on liver vessel segmentation datasets. Additionally, we conduct a series of ablation studies that comprehensively support the superiority of the underlying concepts. | 2020 | Fusing Parallel Social Contexts within Flexible-Order Proximity for Microblog Topic DetectionabstractTopic detection in social media is a challenging task due to large-scale short, noisy and informal nature of messages. Most existing methods only consider textual content or simultaneously model the posts and the first-order structural characteristics of social networks. They ignore the impact of larger neighborhoods in microblog conversations on topics. Moreover, the simple combination of separated content and structure representations fails to capture their nonlinear correlation and different importance in topic inference. To this end, we propose a novel random walk based Parallel Social Contexts Fusion Topic Model (PCFTM) for weibo conversations. Firstly, a user-level conversation network with content information is built by the reposting and commenting relationships among users. Through random walks of different lengths on network, we obtain the user sequences containing the parallel content and structure contexts, which are used to acquire the flexible-order proximity of users. Then we propose a self-fusion network embedding to capture the nonlinear correlation between parallel social contexts. It is achieved by taking the content embedding sequence processed by CNN as the initial value of structure embedding sequence fed to Bi-LSTM. Meanwhile, a user-level self-attention is further used to mine the different importance of users to topics. Lastly, the user sequence embedding is incorporated into neural variational inference for detecting topics, which adaptively balances the intrinsic complementarity between content and structure, and fully uses both local and global social contexts in topic inference. Extensive experiments on three real-world weibo datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model. Ruifang He, Bo Wang 0011

A Benchmark Dataset for Segmenting Liver, Vasculature and Lesions from Large-scale Computed Tomography DataabstractHow to build a high-performance liver-related computer assisted diagnosis system is an open question of great interest. However, the performance of the state-of-art algorithm is always limited by the amount of data and the quality of the label. To address this problem, we propose the biggest treatment-oriented liver cancer dataset for liver surgery and treatment planning. This dataset provides 216 cases (total about 268K frames) scanned images in contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). We labeled all the CT images with the liver, liver vasculature, and liver tumor segmentation ground truth for train and tune segmentation algorithms in advance. Based on that, we evaluate several recent and state-of-the-art segmentation algorithms, including 7 deep learning methods, on CT sequences. All results are compared to reference segmentations five error metrics that highlight different aspects of segmentation accuracy. In general, compared with previous datasets, our dataset is really a challenging dataset. To our knowledge, the proposed dataset and benchmark allow for the first time systematic exploration of such issues, and will be made available to allow for further research in this field. | 2020 | Movie Question Answering via Textual Memory and Plot GraphabstractMovies provide us with a mass of visual content as well as attracting stories. Existing methods have illustrated that understanding movie stories through only visual content is still a hard problem. In this paper, for answering questions about movies, we introduce a new dataset called PlotGraphs, as external knowledge. The dataset contains massive graph-based information of movies. In addition, we put forward a model that can utilize movie clip, subtitle, and graph-based external knowledge. The model contains two main parts: a layered memory network (LMN) and a plot graph representation network (PGRN). In particular, the LMN can represent frame-level and clip-level movie content by the fixed word memory module and the adaptive subtitle memory module, respectively. And the plot graph representation network can represent the entire graph. We first extract words and sentences from the training movie subtitles and then the hierarchically formed movie representations, which are learned from LMN. At the same time, the PGRN can represent the semantic information and the relationships in the graph. We conduct extensive experiments on the MovieQA dataset and the PlotGraphs dataset. With only visual content as inputs, the LMN with frame-level representation obtains a large performance improvement. When incorporating subtitles into LMN to form the clip-level representation, we achieve the state-of-the-art performance on the online evaluation task of “Video+Subtitles.” After the integration of external knowledge, the performance of the model consisting of the LMN and the PGRN is further improved. The good performance successfully demonstrates that the external knowledge and the proposed model are effective for movie understanding. Yahong Han, Bo Wang 0011, Richang Hong, Fei Wu 0001

Movie Question Answering: Remembering the Textual Cues for Layered Visual ContentsabstractMovies provide us with a mass of visual content as well as attracting stories. Existing methods have illustrated that understanding movie stories through only visual content is still a hard problem. In this paper, for answering questions about movies, we put forward a Layered Memory Network (LMN) that represents frame-level and clip-level movie content by the Static Word Memory module and the Dynamic Subtitle Memory module, respectively. Particularly, we firstly extract words and sentences from the training movie subtitles. Then the hierarchically formed movie representations, which are learned from LMN, not only encode the correspondence between words and visual content inside frames, but also encode the temporal alignment between sentences and frames inside movie clips. We also extend our LMN model into three variant frameworks to illustrate the good extendable capabilities. We conduct extensive experiments on the MovieQA dataset. With only visual content as inputs, LMN with frame-level representation obtains a large performance improvement. When incorporating subtitles into LMN to form the clip-level representation, we achieve the state-of-the-art performance on the online evaluation task of 'Video+Subtitles'. The good performance successfully demonstrates that the proposed framework of LMN is effective and the hierarchically formed movie representations have good potential for the applications of movie question answering. | 2017 | Multirate Multimodal Video CaptioningabstractAutomatically describing videos with natural language is a crucial challenge of video understanding. Compared to images, videos have specific spatial-temporal structure and various modality information. In this paper, we propose a Multirate Multimodal Approach for video captioning. Considering that the speed of motion in videos varies constantly, we utilize a Multirate GRU to capture temporal structure of videos. It encodes video frames with different intervals and has a strong ability to deal with motion speed variance. As videos contain different modality cues, we design a particular multimodal fusion method. By incorporating visual, motion, and topic information together, we construct a well-designed video representation. Then the video representation is fed into a RNN-based language model for generating natural language descriptions. We evaluate our approach for video captioning on "Microsoft Research - Video to Text" (MSR-VTT), a large-scale video benchmark for video understanding. And our approach gets great performance on the 2nd MSR Video to Language Challenge. Ziwei Yang 0001, Youjiang Xu, Huiyun Wang, Bo Wang 0011, Yahong Han

Incorporating Intra-Query Term Dependencies in an Aspect Query Language ModelabstractQuery language modeling based on relevance feedback has been widely applied to improve the effectiveness of information retrieval. However, intra‐query term dependencies (i.e., the dependencies between different query terms and term combinations) have not yet been sufficiently addressed in the existing approaches. This article aims to investigate this issue within a comprehensive framework, namely the Aspect Query Language Model (AM). We propose to extend the AM with a hidden Markov model (HMM) structure to incorporate the intra‐query term dependencies and learn the structure of a novel aspect HMM (AHMM) for query language modeling. In the proposed AHMM, the combinations of query terms are viewed as latent variables representing query aspects. They further form an ergodic HMM, where the dependencies between latent variables (nodes) are modeled as the transitional probabilities. The segmented chunks from the feedback documents are considered as observables of the HMM. Then the AHMM structure is optimized by the HMM, which can estimate the prior of the latent variables and the probability distribution of the observed chunks. Our extensive experiments on three large‐scale text retrieval conference (TREC) collections have shown that our method not only significantly outperforms a number of strong baselines in terms of both effectiveness and robustness but also achieves better results than the AM and another state‐of‐the‐art approach, namely the latent concept expansion model. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. | 2014 | Quadratic Tsallis Entropy Bias and generalized Maximum Entropy ModelsabstractIn density estimation task, Maximum Entropy (Maxent) model can effectively use reliable prior information via nonparametric constraints, that is, linear constraints without empirical parameters. However, reliable prior information is often insufficient, and parametric constraints becomes necessary but poses considerable implementation complexity. Improper setting of parametric constraints can result in overfitting or underfitting. To alleviate this problem, a generalization of Maxent, under Tsallis entropy framework, is proposed. The proposed method introduces a convex quadratic constraint for the correction of (expected) quadratic Tsallis Entropy Bias (TEB). Specifically, we demonstrate that the expected quadratic Tsallis entropy of sampling distributions is smaller than that of the underlying real distribution with regard to frequentist, Bayesian prior, and Bayesian posterior framework, respectively. This expected entropy reduction is exactly the (expected) TEB, which can be expressed by the closed‐form formula and acts as a consistent and unbiased correction with an appropriate convergence rate. TEB indicates that the entropy of a specific sampling distribution should be increased accordingly. This entails a quantitative reinterpretation of the Maxent principle. By compensating TEB and meanwhile forcing the resulting distribution to be close to the sampling distribution, our generalized quadratic Tsallis Entropy Bias Compensation (TEBC) Maxent can be expected to alleviate the overfitting and underfitting. We also present a connection between TEB and Lidstone estimator. As a result, TEB–Lidstone estimator is developed by analytically identifying the rate of probability correction in Lidstone. Extensive empirical evaluation shows promising performance of both TEBC Maxent and TEB‐Lidstone in comparison with various state‐of‐the‐art density estimation methods. | 2013 | Exploiting content relevance and social relevance for personalized ad recommendation on internet TVabstractThere have been not many interactions between the two dominant forms of mass communication: television and the Internet, while nowadays the appearance of Internet television makes them more closely. Different with traditional TV in a passive mode of transmission, Internet TV makes it more possible to make personalized service recommendation because of the interactivity between users and the Internet. In this article, we introduce a scheme to provide targeted ad recommendation to Internet TV users by exploiting the content relevance and social relevance. First, we annotate TV videos in terms of visual content analysis and textual analysis by aligning visual and textual information. Second, with user-user, video-video and user-video relationships, we employ Multi-Relationship based Probabilistic Matrix Factorization (MRPMF) to learn representative tags for modeling user preference. And then semantic content relevance (between product/ad and TV video) and social relevance (between product/ad and user interest) are calculated by projecting the corresponding tags into our advertising concept space. Finally, with relevancy scores we make ranking for relevant product/ads to effectively provide users personalized recommendation. The experimental results demonstrate attractiveness and effectiveness of our proposed approach. Bo Wang 0011, Jinqiao Wang, Hanqing Lu

| 2010 | Multi-level trajectory modeling for video copy detectionabstractThe main issue of video copy detection is to estimate a constant spatial-temporal transformation in object level between the original video and the copies. In this paper, we propose a multi-level trajectory modeling approach for video copy detection. It includes a rich trajectory description and a robust trajectory-to-trajectory matching to preserve and explore the trajectory characteristics in both spatial-temporal space and feature space. In summary, we will describe the trajectories in three levels: feature-level descriptor, spatial-temporal coordinates and high-level dynamic behaviors. After extracting the trajectories of videos, we apply a two-stage trajectory-to-trajectory based parametric matching technique to achieve an optimal spatial-temporal transformation between query video and the database videos. To speed up the detection process, we use Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) to index and query trajectories with the dynamic behavior and features. | 2010 | Interactive Web Video Advertising with Context Analysis and SearchabstractOnline media services and electronic commerce are booming recently. Previous studies have been devoted to contextual advertising, but few work deals with interactive web advertising. In this paper, we propose to put users in the loop of collecting contextual ad information with an interaction process, establishing semantic ad links across media platforms. Given an ad video, the key frames with explicit product information are located, which allow users to click favorite key frames for searching ads interactively. A three-stage contextual search is applied to find relevant products or services from web pages, i.e., searching visually similar product images on shopping websites, ranking product tags by text aggregation, and re-search textual items consisting of semantic meaningful tags to make a recommendation. In addition, users can choose automatically suggested keywords to reflect their intentions. | 2009 | Linking video ADS with product or service information by web searchabstractWith the proliferation of online media services, video ads are pervasive across various platforms involving Internet services and interactive TV services. Existing research efforts such as Google AdSense and MSRA videosense/imagesense have been devoted to the less intrusive insertion of relevant textual or video ads in streams or Web pages through text/image/video content analysis whereas the inherent semantics of video ads is much less exploited. In this paper, we propose to link video ads with relevant product/service information across e-commerce Web sites or portals towards ad recommendation in a cross-media manner. Firstly, we carry out semantic analysis within ad videos in which frames marked with product images (FMPI) are extracted. Secondly, we link ad videos with relevant ads on the Web by utilizing FMPI to search visually similar product images (e.g. appearance or logo) and to collect their accompanying text (brand name, category, description, or other tags) over popular e-commerce Websites or portals such as EBay, Amazon, Taobao, etc. We search visually similar product images with local sensitive hashing (LSH) in a naive Bayes near neighbor classifier. Finally, we may recommend more relevant products/services for ad videos through ranking those matched product images and categorizing useful tags of top ranked ads from the Web. Preliminary experiments have been carried out to demonstrate the idea of linking ad videos with product/service information from the Web.
