2024 RNb-NeuS: Reflectance and Normal-Based Multi-View 3D Reconstruction
abstract
This paper introduces a versatile paradigm for integrating multi-view reflectance (optional) and normal maps acquired through photometric stereo. Our approach employs a pixel-wise joint reparameterization of reflectance and normal, considering them as a vector of radiances rendered under simulated, varying illumination. This re-parameterization enables the seamless integration of reflectance and normal maps as input data in neural volume rendering-based 3D reconstruction while preserving a single optimization objective. In contrast, recent multi-view photometric stereo (MVPS) methods depend on multiple, potentially conflicting objectives. Despite its apparent simplicity, our proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in MVPS benchmarks across F-score, Chamfer distance, and mean angular error metrics. Notably, it significantly improves the detailed 3D reconstruction of areas with high curvature or low visibility.

2020 Refractive Multi-view Stereo
abstract
In this article we show how to extend the multi-view stereo technique when the object to be reconstructed is inside a transparent - but refractive - material, which causes distortions in the images. We provide a theoretical formulation of the problem accounting for a general, non-planar shape of the refractive interface, then a discrete solving method, which are validated by tests on synthetic and real data.

2020 Learning Defects in Old Movies from Manually Assisted Restoration
abstract
We propose to detect defects in old movies, as the first step of a larger framework of old movies restoration by inpainting techniques. The specificity of our work is to learn a film restorer's expertise from a pair of sequences, composed of a movie with defects, and the same movie which was semiautomatically restored with the help of a specialized software. In order to detect those defects with minimal human interaction and further reduce the time spent for a restoration, we feed a U-Net with consecutive defective frames as input to detect the unexpected variations of pixel intensity over space and time. Since the output of the network is a mask of defect location, we first have to create the dataset of mask frames on the basis of restored frames from the software used by the film restorer, instead of classical synthetic ground truth, which is not available. These masks are estimated by computing the absolute difference between restored frames and defectuous frames, combined with thresholding and morphological closing. Our network succeeds in automatically detecting real defects with more precision than the manual selection with an all-encompassing shape, including some the expert restorer could have missed for lack of time.

2017 A Non-convex Variational Approach to Photometric Stereo under Inaccurate Lighting
abstract
This paper tackles the photometric stereo problem in the presence of inaccurate lighting, obtained either by calibration or by an uncalibrated photometric stereo method. Based on a precise modeling of noise and outliers, a robust variational approach is introduced. It explicitly accounts for self-shadows, and enforces robustness to cast-shadows and specularities by resorting to redescending M-estimators. The resulting non-convex model is solved by means of a computationally efficient alternating reweighted least-squares algorithm. Since it implicitly enforces integrability, the new variational approach can refine both the intensities and the directions of the lighting.

2017 Fast and accurate surface normal integration on non-rectangular domains
abstract
The integration of surface normals for the purpose of computing the shape of a surface in 3D space is a classic problem in computer vision. However, even nowadays it is still a challenging task to devise a method that is flexible enough to work on non-trivial computational domains with high accuracy, robustness, and computational efficiency. By uniting a classic approach for surface normal integration with modern computational techniques, we construct a solver that fulfils these requirements. Building upon the Poisson integration model, we use an iterative Krylov subspace solver as a core step in tackling the task. While such a method can be very efficient, it may only show its full potential when combined with suitable numerical preconditioning and problem-specific initialisation. We perform a thorough numerical study in order to identify an appropriate preconditioner for this purpose. To provide suitable initialisation, we compute this initial state using a recently developed fast marching integrator. Detailed numerical experiments illustrate the benefits of this novel combination. In addition, we show on real-world photometric stereo datasets that the developed numerical framework is flexible enough to tackle modern computer vision applications.

2016 Unbiased Photometric Stereo for Colored Surfaces: A Variational Approach
abstract
3D shape recovery using photometric stereo (PS) gained increasing attention in the computer vision community in the last three decades due to its ability to recover the thinnest geometric structures. Yet, the reliability of PS for color images is difficult to guarantee, because existing methods are usually formulated as the sequential estimation of the colored albedos, the normals and the depth. Hence, the overall reliability depends on that of each subtask. In this work we propose a new formulation of color photometric stereo, based on image ratios, that makes the technique independent from the albedos. This allows the unbiased 3D-reconstruction of colored surfaces in a single step, by solving a system of linear PDEs using a variational approach.

2012 Perspective Shape from Shading: Ambiguity Analysis and Numerical Approximations
abstract
In this paper we study a perspective model for shape from shading and its numerical approximation. We show that an ambiguity still persists, although the model with light attenuation factor has previously been shown to be well-posed under appropriate assumptions. Analytical results revealing the ambiguity are complemented by various numerical tests. Moreover, we present convergence results for two iterative approximation schemes. The first is based on a finite difference discretization, whereas the second is based on a semi-Lagrangian discretization. The convergence results are obtained in the general framework of viscosity solutions of the underlying partial differential equation. In addition to these theoretical and numerical results, we propose an algorithm for reconstructing discontinuous surfaces, making it possible to obtain results of reasonable quality even for complex scenes. To this end, we solve the constituting equation on a previously segmented input image, using state constraint boundary conditions at the segment borders.

2003 A Multiresolution Approach for Shape from Shading Coupling Deterministic and Stochastic Optimization
abstract
Shape from shading is an ill-posed inverse problem for which there is no completely satisfactory solution in the existing literature. In this paper, we address shape from shading as an energy minimization problem. We first show that the deterministic approach provides efficient algorithms in terms of CPU time, but reaches its limits since the energy associated with shape from shading can contain multiple deep local minima. We derive an alternative stochastic approach using simulated annealing. The obtained results strongly outperform the results of the deterministic approach. The shortcoming is an extreme slowness of the optimization. Therefore, we propose a hybrid approach which combines the deterministic and stochastic approaches in a multiresolution framework.
