| 2020 | Automatic estimation of aortic and mitral valve displacements in dynamic CTA with 4D graph-cutsabstractThe location of the mitral and aortic valves in dynamic cardiac imaging is useful for extracting functional derived parameters such as ejection fraction, valve excursions, and global longitudinal strain, and when performing anatomical structures tracking using slice following or valve intervention's planning. Completely automatic segmentation methods are still challenging tasks because of their fast movements and the different positions that prevent good visibility of the leaflets along the full cardiac cycle. In this article, we propose a processing pipeline to track the displacement of the aortic and mitral valve annuli from high-resolution cardiac four-dimensional computed tomographic angiography (4D-CTA). The proposed method is based on the dynamic separation of left ventricle, left atrium and aorta using statistical shape modeling and an energy minimization algorithm based on graph-cuts and has been evaluated on a set of 15 electrocardiography-gated 4D-CTAs. We report a mean agreement distance between manual annotations and our proposed method of 2.52±1.06 mm for the mitral annulus and 2.00±0.69 mm for the aortic valve annulus based on valve locations detected from manual anatomical landmarks. In addition, we show the effect of detecting the valvular planes on derived functional parameters (ejection fraction, global longitudinal strain, and excursions of the mitral and aortic valves). | 2018 | NOVIFAST: A Fast Algorithm for Accurate and Precise VFA MRI T1 MappingabstractIn quantitative magnetic resonance mapping, the variable flip angle (VFA) steady state spoiled gradient recalled echo (SPGR) imaging technique is popular as it provides a series of high resolution weighted images in a clinically feasible time. Fast, linear methods that estimate maps from these weighted images have been proposed, such as DESPOT1 and iterative re-weighted linear least squares. More accurate, non-linear least squares (NLLS) estimators are in play, but these are generally much slower and require careful initialization. In this paper, we present NOVIFAST, a novel NLLS-based algorithm specifically tailored to VFA SPGR mapping. By exploiting the particular structure of the SPGR model, a computationally efficient, yet accurate and precise map estimator is derived. Simulation and in vivo human brain experiments demonstrate a twenty-fold speed gain of NOVIFAST compared with conventional gradient-based NLLS estimators while maintaining a high precision and accuracy. Moreover, NOVIFAST is eight times faster than the efficient implementations of the variable projection (VARPRO) method. Furthermore, NOVIFAST is shown to be robust against initialization. | 2017 | Non-Stationary Rician Noise Estimation in Parallel MRI Using a Single Image: A Variance-Stabilizing ApproachabstractParallel magnetic resonance imaging (pMRI) techniques have gained a great importance both in research and clinical communities recently since they considerably accelerate the image acquisition process. However, the image reconstruction algorithms needed to correct the subsampling artifacts affect the nature of noise, i.e., it becomes non-stationary. Some methods have been proposed in the literature dealing with the non-stationary noise in pMRI. However, their performance depends on information not usually available such as multiple acquisitions, receiver noise matrices, sensitivity coil profiles, reconstruction coefficients, or even biophysical models of the data. Besides, some methods show an undesirable granular pattern on the estimates as a side effect of local estimation. Finally, some methods make strong assumptions that just hold in the case of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which limits their usability in real scenarios. We propose a new automatic noise estimation technique for non-stationary Rician noise that overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks. Its effectiveness is due to the derivation of a variance-stabilizing transformation designed to deal with any SNR. The method was compared to the main state-of-the-art methods in synthetic and real scenarios. Numerical results confirm the robustness of the method and its better performance for the whole range of SNRs. Tomasz Pieciak, Santiago Aja-Fernández, Gonzalo Vegas-Sánchez-Ferrero |

| 2015 | Anisotropic Diffusion Filter With Memory Based on Speckle Statistics for Ultrasound ImagesabstractUltrasound (US) imaging exhibits considerable difficulties for medical visual inspection and for development of automatic analysis methods due to speckle, which negatively affects the perception of tissue boundaries and the performance of automatic segmentation methods. With the aim of alleviating the effect of speckle, many filtering techniques are usually considered as a preprocessing step prior to automatic analysis methods or visual inspection. Most of the state-of-the-art filters try to reduce the speckle effect without considering its relevance for the characterization of tissue nature. However, the speckle phenomenon is the inherent response of echo signals in tissues and can provide important features for clinical purposes. This loss of information is even magnified due to the iterative process of some speckle filters, e.g., diffusion filters, which tend to produce over-filtering because of the progressive loss of relevant information for diagnostic purposes during the diffusion process. In this paper, we propose an anisotropic diffusion filter with a probabilistic-driven memory mechanism to overcome the over-filtering problem by following a tissue selective philosophy. In particular, we formulate the memory mechanism as a delay differential equation for the diffusion tensor whose behavior depends on the statistics of the tissues, by accelerating the diffusion process in meaningless regions and including the memory effect in regions where relevant details should be preserved. Results both in synthetic and real US images support the inclusion of the probabilistic memory mechanism for maintaining clinical relevant structures, which are removed by the state-of-the-art filters. | 2012 | A Markov Random Field Approach for Topology-Preserving Registration: Application to Object-Based Tomographic Image InterpolationabstractThis paper proposes a topology-preserving multiresolution elastic registration method based on a discrete Markov random field of deformations and a block-matching procedure. The method is applied to the object-based interpolation of tomographic slices. For that purpose, the fidelity of a given deformation to the data is established by a block-matching strategy based on intensity- and gradient-related features, the smoothness of the transformation is favored by an appropriate prior on the field, and the deformation is guaranteed to maintain the topology by imposing some hard constraints on the local configurations of the field. The resulting deformation is defined as the maximum a posteriori configuration. Additionally, the relative influence of the fidelity and smoothness terms is weighted by the unsupervised estimation of the field parameters. In order to obtain an unbiased interpolation result, the registration is performed both in the forward and backward directions, and the resulting transformations are combined by using the local information content of the deformation. The method is applied to magnetic resonance and computed tomography acquisitions of the brain and the torso. Quantitative comparisons offer an overall improvement in performance with respect to related works in the literature. Additionally, the application of the interpolation method to cardiac magnetic resonance images has shown that the removal of any of the main components of the algorithm results in a decrease in performance which has proven to be statistically significant. | 2011 | Realistic log-compressed law for ultrasound image recoveryabstractA realistic log-compressed law for ultrasound images based on a real device is proposed. The model takes into account the linear behavior of the logarithmic amplifier for small signal gain which transforms image values in a different way as the classical models do. Additionally, for recovery purposes, a method for the estimation of the compression parameters is also proposed when a realistic log-compressed law is considered. Results with synthetic images show that the proposed method achieved a consistent Rayleigh parameter estimate with a very low error. Experiments with real images show that the inversion method is consistent through the whole acquisition process when parameters of the logarithmic amplifier are assumed constant.
