| 2025 | Evaluation of techniques for automated classification and artery quantification of the circle of Willis on TOF-MRA images: The CROWN challengeabstractAssessing risk factors for intracranial aneurysm (IA) development on images is crucial for early detection of high-risk cases. IAs often form at bifurcations within the circle of Willis (CoW), but manual assessment of these arteries is both time-consuming and susceptible to inconsistencies. Previous studies on imaging markers for IA development lack sufficient evidence for clinical implications, highlighting the need for automated methods to assess CoW morphology. No systematic approach currently exists to identify the best methodological strategies. To address this, we organized a scientific challenge to compare various techniques against a clinical reference standard. Participants were tasked with (1) automated classification of CoW anatomical variants and (2) automated prediction of CoW artery diameters and bifurcation angles. We provided 300 TOF-MRA scans for training and another 300 for testing, all manually annotated. Submissions were evaluated using balanced accuracy, mean absolute error, and Pearson correlation coefficient metrics. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the results from six participating teams. The findings show that various methods may be suitable for automated CoW assessment, but that these need further improvement to meet clinical standards. The challenge remains open for future submissions, offering a benchmark for new techniques. Iris N. Vos, Ynte M. Ruigrok, Edwin Bennink, Mireille R. E. Velthuis, Barbara Paic, Maud E. H. | 2021 | SINGA-Easy: An Easy-to-Use Framework for MultiModal AnalysisabstractDeep learning has achieved great success in a wide spectrum of multimedia applications such as image classification, natural language processing and multimodal data analysis. Recent years have seen the development of many deep learning frameworks that provide a high-level programming interface for users to design models, conduct training and deploy inference. However, it remains challenging to build an efficient end-to-end multimedia application with most existing frameworks. Specifically, in terms of usability, it is demanding for non-experts to implement deep learning models, obtain the right settings for the entire machine learning pipeline, manage models and datasets, and exploit external data sources all together. Further, in terms of adaptability, elastic computation solutions are much needed as the actual serving workload fluctuates constantly, and scaling the hardware resources to handle the fluctuating workload is typically infeasible. To address these challenges, we introduce SINGA-Easy, a new deep learning framework that provides distributed hyper-parameter tuning at the training stage, dynamic computational cost control at the inference stage, and intuitive user interactions with multimedia contents facilitated by model explanation. Our experiments on the training and deployment of multi-modality data analysis applications show that the framework is both usable and adaptable to dynamic inference loads. We implement SINGA-Easy on top of Apache SINGA and demonstrate our system with the entire machine learning life cycle. | 2020 | ForkBase: Immutable, Tamper-evident Storage Substrate for Branchable ApplicationsabstractData collaboration activities typically require systematic or protocol-based coordination to be scalable. Git, an effective enabler for collaborative coding, has been attested for its success in countless projects around the world. Hence, applying the Git philosophy to general data collaboration beyond coding is motivating. We call it Git for data. However, the original Git design handles data at the file granule, which is considered too coarse-grained for many database applications. We argue that Git for data should be co-designed with database systems. To this end, we developed ForkBase to make Git for data practical. ForkBase is a distributed, immutable storage system designed for data version management and data collaborative operation. In this demonstration, we show how ForkBase can greatly facilitate collaborative data management and how its novel data deduplication technique can improve storage efficiency for archiving massive data versions.
