| 2025 | Hey Hey, My My, Skewness Is Here to Stay: Challenges and Opportunities in Cloud Block Store TrafficabstractElastic Block Storage (EBS) has a pivotal role in modern data center infrastructure, providing reliable, high-performance and flexible block storage service to users. In Alibaba Cloud, EBS is the most widely used service and has been supporting the operation of millions of virtual disks. However, even with layers of load balancing and caching, we still observe significant traffic skewness across the EBS stack. This motivates us to comprehensively investigate symptoms and root causes behind the traffic patterns and, more importantly, explore the fixes for the identified issues. | 2025 | CableCache: In-Network Request Deduplication for Key-Value StoresabstractKey-value stores face challenges from skewed dynamic workloads. We presents CableCache, an in-network request deduplication system. It utilizes programmable switches to maintain an object request information directory and employs the INRD protocol to deduplicate requests for hot objects with the same key, which not only overcomes the limitation of target object value size but also shortens the access path to some extent. Additionally, it can address complex scenarios such as the presence of read-modify-write requests and multi-packet target objects. Experiments show that the system effectively alleviates load imbalance in key-value stores, improves system-wide throughput, and reduces tail latency of requests under both synthetic and real workloads. | 2025 | Sleeping with One Eye Open: Fast, Sustainable Storage with SandmanabstractAll-flash servers, while being widely popular for their high performance and large capacity, can incur significant energy consumption in modern storage systems. Through a motivational study, we discover that the culprit is the inefficiency in the software stack, and existing power-saving methods fail to deliver comparable performance, especially under workload bursts. Guided by the lessons learned, we propose Sandman, a scheduling framework that combines the fast resource scaling mechanism, resource monitoring, and I/O burst detection policies. Experiments show that Sandman reduces average power consumption by up to 39.38% and energy consumption by up to 33.36% while delivering performance comparable (within 5% in corner cases) to the best performance case (the busy-polling stack) in both benchmarks and field workloads. | 2025 | MasterPlan: A Reinforcement Learning Based Scheduler for Archive StorageabstractWith the sheer volume of data in today’s world, archive storage systems play a significant role in persisting the cold data. Due to stringent cost concerns, one popular design is to organize disks into groups and periodically switch them to be powered on for serving user requests. Scheduling thus becomes critical for both CapEx and performance. Unfortunately, field results indicate that existing schedulers can be often suboptimal. Our further analysis suggests that the main reason is the mismatch between the ever-changing workloads and the fixed set of coarsely-configured parameters in current heuristic-based schedulers. In this article, we propose MasterPlan , a reinforcement learning (RL) based scheduler for archive storage systems. By identifying the unique characteristics of archive storage service, we design a state space and reward function for the RL agent. MasterPlan includes a continuous action encoding approach to guarantee efficient exploration, and a meta adaptation module to extract features of workload series. Experiments show that MasterPlan can achieve 1.25× throughput, 2.16× 99 th latency and 1.47× power draw improvement compared to existing solutions. | 2025 | Evolving the Cloud Block Store with Performance, Elasticity, Availability, and Hardware OffloadingabstractIn this paper, we qualitatively and quantitatively discuss the design choices, production experience, and lessons in building the Elastic Block Storage ( EBS ) at Alibaba Cloud over the past decade. To cope with hardware advancement and users’ demands, we shift our focus from design simplicity in EBS1 to high performance and space efficiency in EBS2 , and finally reducing network traffic amplification in EBS3 . In addition to the architectural evolutions, we also summarize development lessons and experiences as four topics, including: (i) achieving high elasticity in latency, throughput, IOPS, and capacity; (ii) improving availability by minimizing the blast radius of individual, regional, and global failure events; (iii) identifying the motivations and key tradeoffs in various hardware offloading solutions; and (iv) identifying the pros/cons of alternative solutions and explaining why seemingly promising ideas would not work in practice. | 2024 | CSAL: the Next-Gen Local Disks for the CloudabstractCloud local disks are attractive for their affordable price and high performance. The recent advancement in CPUs motivates cloud vendors to further multiplex the computing resources to serve more users. Unfortunately, such proposals are constrained by the limited offerings of cloud local disks per server as the underlying storage devices are either large but slow (e.g., HDDs) or fast yet small (e.g., NVMe SSDs). | 2023 | Understanding and Detecting On-The-Fly Configuration BugsabstractSoftware systems introduce an increasing number of configuration options to provide flexibility, and support updating the options on the fly to provide persistent services. This mechanism, however, may affect the system reliability, leading to unexpected results like software crashes or functional errors. In this paper, we refer to the bugs caused by on-the-fly configuration updates as on-the-fly configuration bugs, or OCBugs for short. In this paper, we conducted the first in-depth study on 75 real-world OCBugs from 5 widely used systems to understand the symptoms, root causes, and triggering conditions of OCBugs. Based on our study, we designed and implemented Parachute, an automated testing framework to detect OCBugs. Our key insight is that the value of one configuration option, either loaded at the startup phase or updated on the fly, should have the same effects on the target program. Parachute generates tests for on-the-fly configuration updates by mutating the existing tests and conducts differential analysis to identify OCBugs. We evaluated Parachute on 7 real-world software systems. The results show that Parachute detected 75% (42/56) of the known OCBugs, and reported 13 unknown bugs, 11 of which have been confirmed or fixed by developers until the time of writing. | 2023 | When Database Meets New Storage Devices: Understanding and Exposing Performance Mismatches via ConfigurationsabstractNVMe SSD hugely boosts the I/O speed, with up to GB/s throughput and microsecond-level latency. Unfortunately, DBMS users can often find their high-performanced storage devices tend to deliver less-than-expected or even worse performance when compared to their traditional peers. While many works focus on proposing new DBMS designs to fully exploit NVMe SSDs, few systematically study the symptoms, root causes and possible detection methods of such performance mismatches on existing databases. In this paper, we start with an empirical study where we systematically expose and analyze the performance mismatches on six popular databases via controlled configuration tuning. From the study, we find that all six databases can suffer from performance mismatches. Moreover, we conclude that the root causes can be categorized as databases' unawareness of new storage devices characteristics in I/O size, I/O parallelism and I/O sequentiality. We report 17 mismatches to developers and 15 are confirmed. Additionally, we realize testing all configuration knobs yields low efficiency. Therefore, we propose a fast performance mismatch detection framework and evaluation shows that our framework brings two orders of magnitude speedup than baseline without sacrificing effectiveness. | 2023 | From Missteps to Milestones: A Journey to Practical Fail-Slow DetectionabstractThe newly emerging “fail-slow” failures plague both software and hardware where the victim components are still functioning yet with degraded performance. To address this problem, this article presents Perseus , a practical fail-slow detection framework for storage devices. Perseus leverages a light regression-based model to quickly pinpoint and analyze fail-slow failures at the granularity of drives. Within a 10-month close monitoring on 248K drives, Perseus managed to find 304 fail-slow cases. Isolating them can reduce the (node-level) 99.99th tail latency by 48%. We assemble a large-scale fail-slow dataset (including 41K normal drives and 315 verified fail-slow drives) from our production traces, based on which we provide root cause analysis on fail-slow drives covering a variety of ill-implemented scheduling, hardware defects, and environmental factors. We have released the dataset to the public for fail-slow study. | 2022 | imDedup: A Lossless Deduplication Scheme to Eliminate Fine-grained Redundancy among ImagesabstractImages occupy a large amount of storage in data centers. To cope with the explosive growth of the image storage requirement, image compression techniques are devised to shrink the size of every single image at first. Furthermore, image deduplication methods are proposed to reduce the storage cost as they could be used to eliminate redundancy among images. However, state-of-the-art image deduplication methods either can only eliminate file-level coarse-grained redundancy or cannot guarantee lossless deduplication. In this work, we propose a new lossless image deduplication framework to eliminate fine-grained redundancy among images. It first decodes images to expose similarity, then eliminates fine-grained redundancy on the decoded data by delta compres-sion, and finally re-compresses the remaining data by image compression encoding. Based on this framework, we propose a novel lossless similarity-based deduplication (SBD) scheme for decoded image data (called imDedup). Specifically, imDedup uses a novel and fast sampling method (called Feature Map) to detect similar images in a two-dimensional way, which greatly reduces computation overhead. Meanwhile, it uses a novel delta encoder (called Idelta) which incorporates image compression encoding characteristics into deduplication to guarantee the remaining deduplicated image data to be friendly re-compressed via image encoding, which significantly improves the compression ratio. We implement a prototype of imDedup for JPEG images, and demonstrate its superiority on four datasets: Compared with exact image deduplication, imDedup achieves a 19%-38% higher compression ratio by efficiently eliminating fine-grained redundancy. Compared with the similarity detector and delta encoder of state-of-the-art SBD schemes running on the decoded image data, imDedup achieves a 1.8×-3.4× higher throughput and a 1.3 ×-1. 6 × higher compression ratio, respectively. | 2022 | vGraph: Memory-Efficient Multicore Graph Processing for Traversal-Centric AlgorithmsabstractTo lower the monetary/energy cost, single-machine multicore graph processing is gaining increasing attention for a wide range of traversal-centric graph algorithms such as BFS, SSSP, CC, and PageRank, of which the processing is relatively simple and the topology data (vertices and edges) dominates the memory footprint. This paper presents$v$Graph, a NUMA-aware, memory-efficient multicore graph processing system for traversal-centric algorithms.$v$Graph proposes an ultralight NUMA-aware graph preprocessing scheme which eliminates almost all complex preprocessing steps and pipelines per-NUMA graph loading and compressing, to effectively reduce inter-NUMA memory accesses while keeping both preprocessing cost and peak memory footprint low. We further optimize$v$Graph with effective HPC techniques including prefetching and work-stealing. Evaluation on a 384GB-memory, four-NUMA machine shows that compared to the state-of-the-art NUMA-aware/-unaware systems,$v$Graph can process much larger real-world and synthetic graphs with various traversal-centric algorithms, achieving significantly higher memory efficiency and lower processing time. | 2021 | DepOwl: Detecting Dependency Bugs to Prevent Compatibility FailuresabstractApplications depend on libraries to avoid reinventing the wheel. Libraries may have incompatible changes during evolving. As a result, applications will suffer from compatibility failures. There has been much research on addressing detecting incompatible changes in libraries, or helping applications co-evolve with the libraries. The existing solution helps the latest application version work well against the latest library version as an afterthought. However, end users have already been suffering from the failures and have to wait for new versions. In this paper, we propose DepOwl, a practical tool helping users prevent compatibility failures. The key idea is to avoid using incompatible versions from the very beginning. We evaluated DepOwl on 38 known compatibility failures from StackOverflow, and DepOwl can prevent 35 of them. We also evaluated DepOwl using the software repository shipped with Ubuntu-19.10. DepOwl detected 77 unknown dependency bugs, which may lead to compatibility failures. | 2021 | Challenges and opportunities: an in-depth empirical study on configuration error injection testingabstractConfiguration error injection testing (CEIT) could systematically evaluate software reliability and diagnosability to runtime configuration errors. This paper explores the challenges and opportunities of applying CEIT technique. We build an extensible, highly-modularized CEIT framework named CeitInspector to experiment with various CEIT techniques. Using CeitInspector, we quantitatively measure the effectiveness and efficiency of CEIT using six mature and widely-used server applications. During this process, we find a fair number of test cases are left unstudied by the prior research work. The injected configuration errors in these cases often indicate latent misconfigurations, which might be ticking time bombs in the system and lead to severe damage. We conduct an in-depth study regarding these cases to reveal the root causes, and explore possible remedies. Finally, we come up with actionable suggestions guided by our study to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the existing CEIT techniques. | 2020 | CoinPurse: A Device-Assisted File System with Dual InterfacesabstractBlock I/O serves as a classic interface for accessing storage devices with portability. But it can also cause extra overhead by enforcing transferring data in the unit of blocks. In this paper, we present CoinPurse, a device-assisted file system with dual interfaces. By leveraging non-volatile memory (NVM) in SSD, CoinPurse manages to adaptively persist writes through both the block I/O and a byte-addressable partial update interface. In addition, we also develop a set of techniques to overcome hardware limitations and resolve possible consistency conflicts. Evaluation shows that CoinPurse outperforms F2FS, a popular flash-optimized file system, by up to 33.2%. Zhe Yang 0012, Youyou Lu, Erci Xu, Jiwu Shu |

| 2020 | CP-Detector: Using Configuration-related Performance Properties to Expose Performance BugsabstractPerformance bugs are often hard to detect due to their non fail-stop symptoms. Existing debugging techniques can only detect performance bugs with known patterns (e.g., inefficient loops). The key reason behind this incapability is the lack of a general test oracle. Here, we argue that the performance (e.g., throughput, latency, execution time) expectation of configuration can serve as a strong oracle candidate for performance bug detection. First, prior work shows that most performance bugs are related to configurations. Second, the configuration change reflects common expectation on performance changes. If the actual performance is contrary to the expectation, the related code snippet is likely to be problematic. | 2011 | VISOR: A Pratical VoIP Steganography PlatformabstractRecently, streaming steganography has attracted a lot of research efforts, however, since multimedia processing requires high performance hardware and software, most literatures in the streaming steganography community focus on simulations due to lack of a practical streaming steganography platform. Towards this issue, we design and develop VISOR, a novel VoIP Steganography Oriented platfoRm. VISOR consists of both hardware(named "VISOR-Key") and software(named "VISORPhone"). In general, VISOR provides an open, high performance and portable platform to the streaming steganography community. Ziling Wei, Bo Liu 0012, Erci Xu, Baokang Zhao, Jinshu Su |
