FSMFLog: Discovering Anomalous Logs Combining Full Semantic Information and Multifeature FusionabstractIndustrial Internet of Things devices usually use log information to record their runtime status, so log-based anomaly detection can contribute to discovering device failures in time. The first step of log-based anomaly detection is log parsing. However, existing methods mainly extract log templates for analysis, which ignore some words that represent key semantics. Such omissions may cause semantic misunderstandings and further affect the performance of anomaly detection. On the other hand, existing deep learning-based log anomaly detection approaches only consider the sequential relations among log messages, ignoring the log time and type information. In this article, we propose an anomaly detection method called FSMFLog based on full semantic information and multifeature fusion. FSMFLog uses log word lists instead of log templates to represent semantic information. Specifically, the variable part is first removed through preprocessing, and then the log sentences are initially clustered using two heuristic strategies, after which the words in the log content are clustered through the prefix tree structure. By integrating semantic features, time features, and type features, FSMFLog also trains a bidirectional GRU model based on an attention mechanism. Evaluation on 16 real-word log data sets from LogHub shows that FSMFLog achieves a higher log parsing accuracy, outperforming other five state-of-the-art log parsing methods. We also evaluated FSMFLog on two most widely used public data sets (HDFS and BGL), and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of FSMFLog, outperforming the compared approaches using deep learning with an average increase of more than 10% in$F1$-score. | 2024 | PLDE: A lightweight pooling layer for spoken language recognitionabstractIn recent years, the transfer learning method of replacing acoustic features with phonetic features has become a new paradigm for end-to-end spoken language recognition. However, these larger transfer learning models always encode too much redundant information. In this paper, we propose a lightweight language recognition decoder based on a phonetic learnable dictionary encoding (PLDE) layer, which is more suitable for phonetic features and achieves better recognition performances while significantly reducing the number of parameters. The lightweight decoder consists of three main parts: (1) a phonetic learnable dictionary with ghost clusters, which improves the traditional LDE pooling layer and enhances the model’s ability to model noise with ghost clusters; (2) coarse-grained chunk-level pooling, which can highlight the phone sequence and suppress noise around ghost clusters, and hence reduce their influence to the subsequent network; (3) fine-grained chunk-level projection, which enables the discriminative network to obtain more linguistic information and hence improve the model’s modelling ability. These three parts simplify the language recognition decoder into a PLDE pooling layer, reducing the parameter size of the decoder by at least one order of magnitude while achieving better recognition performances. In experiments on the OLR2020 dataset, the C a v g of the proposed method exceeds that of the current state-of-the-art language recognition system, achieving 24.68% and 42.24% improvements on the cross-channel test set and unknown noise test set, respectively. Furthermore, experimental results on the OLR2021 dataset also demonstrate the effectiveness of PLDE. Zimu Li, Yanyan Xu 0001, Dengfeng Ke, Kaile Su

R-Mixup: Riemannian Mixup for Biological NetworksabstractBiological networks are commonly used in biomedical and healthcare domains to effectively model the structure of complex biological systems with interactions linking biological entities. However, due to their characteristics of high dimensionality and low sample size, directly applying deep learning models on biological networks usually faces severe overfitting. In this work, we propose R-MIXUP, a Mixup-based data augmentation technique that suits the symmetric positive definite (SPD) property of adjacency matrices from biological networks with optimized training efficiency. The interpolation process in R-MIXUP leverages the log-Euclidean distance metrics from the Riemannian manifold, effectively addressing the swelling effect and arbitrarily incorrect label issues of vanilla Mixup. We demonstrate the effectiveness of R-MIXUP with five real-world biological network datasets on both regression and classification tasks. Besides, we derive a commonly ignored necessary condition for identifying the SPD matrices of biological networks and empirically study its influence on the model performance. The code implementation can be found in Appendix E. Xuan Kan, Zimu Li, Hejie Cui, Yue Yu 0001, Ran Xu 0002, Shaojun Yu, Ying Guo 0003, Carl Yang 0001

LogTracer: Efficient Anomaly Tracing Combining System Log Detection and Provenance GraphabstractInformation systems have penetrated into all areas of social life, however, unknown threats represented by APT attacks pose serious challenges to their security. In recent years, approaches based on log analysis and provenance graph have been extensively used in the anomaly detection and tracing of malicious attacks. However, traditional method has low detection accuracy, high complexity and low efficiency. To address those shortcomings, we propose an efficient anomaly tracing approach (LogTracer), which combines system log detection and provenance graph together. The proposed LogTracer extracts the attack path from provenance graph, which is constructed with the anomaly degrees of the system logs anomaly detection results. Compar-ative experiments with OmegaLog, NoDoze and ALchemist are conducted on a simulated dataset with 16 attack types totaling 290 million logs. The experimental results show that our method approximately 5.4x, 0.2x and 7.2x faster than these three methods in processing efficiency, and its malicious node coverage rate reaches 98.1%. | 2021 | MineHunter: A Practical Cryptomining Traffic Detection Algorithm Based on Time Series TrackingabstractWith the development of cryptocurrencies’ market, the problem of cryptojacking, which is an unauthorized control of someone else’s computer to mine cryptocurrency, has been more and more serious. Existing cryptojacking detection methods require to install anti-virus software on the host or load plug-in in the browser, which are difficult to deploy on enterprise or campus networks with a large number of hosts and servers. To bridge the gap, we propose MineHunter, a practical cryptomining traffic detection algorithm based on time series tracking. Instead of being deployed at the hosts, MineHunter detects the cryptomining traffic at the entrance of enterprise or campus networks. Minehunter has taken into account the challenges faced by the actual deployment environment, including extremely unbalanced datasets, controllable alarms, traffic confusion, and efficiency. The accurate network-level detection is achieved by analyzing the network traffic characteristics of cryptomining and investigating the association between the network flow sequence of cryptomining and the block creation sequence of cryptocurrency. We evaluate our algorithm at the entrance of a large office building in a campus network for a month. The total volumes exceed 28 TeraBytes. Our experimental results show that MineHunter can achieve precision of 97.0% and recall of 99.7%. Shize Zhang, Jiahai Yang 0001, Xin Cheng 0022, Xiaoqian Ma, Hui Zhang 0052, Bo Wang 0066, Zimu Li

Unsupervised IoT Fingerprinting Method via Variational Auto-encoder and K-meansabstractWith the rapid growth of the number of IoT devices on the Internet, security problems of IoT devices are becoming more and more serious, which bring more challenges to network administrators. The first task to solve these problems for network administrators is being aware of IoT devices in the network. Previous IoT device identification methods typically use supervised machine learning methods, which require a large amount of labeled sample data. However, it is difficult to obtain a large number of labeled samples effectively. In order to address this problem, we propose an unsupervised IoT device fingerprinting method at the network level, which can effectively cluster IoT devices without labeled samples. We deeply analyze the temporal and spatial dimension characteristics of network traffic, which can adequately reflect the differences between different IoT devices. By using these features, we develop a clustering framework based on variational autoencoder and K-means algorithms. We conduct evaluation experiments on a public dataset including 24 different IoT devices. The experimental results show that our clustering algorithm can achieve accuracy of 86.7% outperforming a k-NN based state-of-art supervised approach. | 2021 | A General DRL-based Optimization Framework of User Association and Power Control for HetNetabstractHeterogeneous network (HetNet) and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) have been seen as promising ways to improve the network capacity. However, the dense deployment of base stations (BSs) in HetNet causes unbalanced loads and large energy consumption. In this paper, we investigate the joint user association and power control problem with the objective of improving the sum rate and the energy efficiency in the Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA)-enabled HetNet and NOMA-enabled HetNet, respectively. Particularly, the traditional joint user association and power control algorithms can only solve the problem for one network scenario, which are not applicable to the other networks. Specifically, this paper presents a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based general optimization framework, which is a unified solution for the user association and power control problem and can adapt to OMA-enabled and NOMA-enabled HetNet scenarios with relatively minor modifications. In the framework, a Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient Algorithm (DDPG)-based joint user association and power control algorithm is proposed that can learn to achieve load balance and improve energy efficiency by interacting with the environment. Specifically, different from the DDPG, the proposed algorithm can solve the discrete and continuous optimization problems together. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the proposed algorithm achieves a higher sum rate and energy efficiency than the traditional algorithms in both OMA-enabled HetNet and NOMA-enabled HetNet. | 2019 | ALEAP: Attention-based LSTM with Event Embedding for Attack ProjectionabstractCyberattacks have developed rapidly in diversity and complexity in recent years. Despite the existence of various defense systems, it cannot provide early warnings and prevent catastrophic consequences in advance. Therefore, the need for prediction becomes more and more urgent, especially for those multiple step attacks in which several steps are required for achieving the attack successfully. In this paper, we focus on attack projection that is aimed to predict the next step of the attack based on historical information and gained knowledge of similar events happened in the past. Previous models on attack projection based on probability graph model or simple RNN models, which may limit their capability of noise tolerance and sequence association analysis. To remedy this, we propose a method called ALEAP which incorporates event embedding and attention mechanism into LSTM models to better predict the future events. We test ALEAP on a dataset of millions of security events collected from the multi-source security devices, and show that our approach is effective in event prediction. ALEAP also provides a useful method for security specialists and all computer environment-related parties to better predict attack projection and defend known attacks. | 2018 | Occlusion Handling in Tracking Multiple People Using RNNabstractIn tracking-by-detection of multiple targets in video sequences, ID-switch is an undesirable error due to long (short) occlusion among targets. In this paper, we propose an occlusion handling method based on Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to remedy this issue. The method reconstructs missed detection boxes in order to preserve the ID number of targets after occlusion by predicting the detections in next frames. The prediction is accomplished by learning the motion of targets using a novel RNN. Applying this technique on tracking results of several state-of-the-arts shows that their ID-switch error is reduced. Maryam Babaee, Zimu Li, Gerhard Rigoll

CEFF: An efficient approach for traffic anomaly detection and classificationabstractNowadays, there are two major challenges to detect traffic anomalies in a large scale network. One is how to handle huge amounts of traffic data when we detect traffic anomalies in a network, and the other is how to carry out fast and detailed detection and classification. To address these two challenges, we propose a Change based Effective Frequent flow Features approach (CEFF), which can quickly obtain the anomaly detection and classification results by scanning the flow data only once. We implement CEFF for both offline and online detection and classification in Spark, a popular big data processing platform. Besides, we evaluate CEFF using China Telecom NetFlow format data in experiments, and make comparisons between CEFF and Shannon entropy based method, which has been proved to be effective for traffic anomaly detection. The experiment results show that CEFF has excellent performance in traffic anomaly detection and classification. Geng Tian, Xia Yin 0001, Xingang Shi, Zimu Li, Yingya Guo

Your trajectory privacy can be breached even if you walk in groupsabstractThe enterprise Wi-Fi networks enable the collection of large-scale users' mobility information at an indoor level. The collected trajectory data is very valuable for both research and commercial purposes, but the use of the trajectory data also raises serious privacy concerns. A large body of work tries to achieve k-anonymity (hiding each user in an anonymity set no smaller than k) as the first step to solve the privacy problem. Yet it has been qualitatively recognized that k-anonymity is still risky when the diversity of the sensitive information in the k-anonymity set is low. There, however, still lacks a study that provides a quantitative understanding of that risk in the trajectory dataset. In this work, we present a large-scale measurement based analysis of the low-diversity risk over four weeks of trajectory data collected from Tsinghua, a campus that covers an area of 4 km2, on which 2,670 access points are deployed in 111 buildings. Using this dataset, we highlight the high risk of the low diversity. For example, we find that even when 5-anonymity is satisfied, the sensitive attributes of 25% of individuals can be easily guessed. We also find that although a larger k increases the size of anonymity sets, the corresponding improvement on the diversity of anonymity sets is very limited (decayed exponentially). These results suggest that diversity-oriented solutions are necessary. Kaixin Sui, Youjian Zhao, Minghua Ma, Zimu Li, Dan Pei

Understanding the Impact of AP Density on WiFi Performance Through Real-World Deploymentabstract802.11 (WiFi) networks have become increasingly important for our daily lives. However, previous work has shown that enterprise WiFi performance is often unsatisfactory and that over-utilization and interference from rogue APs are the two primary reasons. To address the above problem, this paper proposes to improve the capacity of WiFi infrastructures by increasing the enterprise AP deployment density, as well as disabling the wired Internet access in buildings to eliminate rogue APs and their interference. We deployed several WiFi networks with different AP density and vendors on Tsinghua campus. Based on the measurement results from our real-world deployments, we made three main observations: 1) in general, higher AP density improves WiFi performance; 2) over-dense deployment with unnecessarily high transmission power can worsen WiFi performance. 3) choice of AP vendors also has an impact on WiFi performance. | 2016 | Characterizing and Improving WiFi Latency in Large-Scale Operational NetworksabstractWiFi latency is a key factor impacting the user experience of modern mobile applications, but it has not been well studied at large scale. In this paper, we design and deploy WiFiSeer, a framework to measure and characterize WiFi latency at large scale. WiFiSeer comprises a systematic methodology for modeling the complex relationships between WiFi latency and a diverse set of WiFi performance metrics, device characteristics, and environmental factors. WiFiSeer was deployed on Tsinghua campus to conduct a WiFi latency measurement study of unprecedented scale with more than 47,000 unique user devices. We observe that WiFi latency follows a long tail distribution and the 90th (99th) percentile is around 20 ms (250 ms). Furthermore, our measurement results quantitatively confirm some anecdotal perceptions about impacting factors and disapprove others. We deploy three practical solutions for improving WiFi latency in Tsinghua, and the results show significantly improved WiFi latencies. In particular, over 1,000 devices use our AP selection service based on a predictive WiFi latency model for 2.5 months, and 72% of their latencies are reduced by over half after they re-associate to the suggested APs. | 2015 | How bad are the rogues' impact on enterprise 802.11 network performance?abstractEnterprise 802.11 Network (EWLAN) is an important infrastructure to the Mobile Internet, but its performance is being significantly impacted by the ever-increasing Rogue access points (RAPs). For example, in the university EWLAN we studied, the number of RAPs is more than seven times that of the enterprise APs. In this paper, we propose a generic methodology to measure RAP's carrier sense interference and hidden terminal interference, and it only uses readily available SNMP metrics, without any additional measurement hardware. Our results show that, on average, the carrier sense interference due to RAPs causes only 5% access delay increase at the MAC layer, because of careful engineering and software optimization. However, hidden terminal interference due to RAPs causes (a much more severe) up to 30% MAC layer loss rate increase on average, because no existing approach has explicitly dealt with the hidden terminal impact from rogue APs. Overall, the RAP interference would increase the IP layer delay at the WiFi hop by up to 50%. Kaixin Sui, Youjian Zhao, Dan Pei, Zimu Li

Mining network traffic anomaly based on adjustable piecewise entropyabstractToday network traffic anomaly detection is very challenging in a big and constantly changing network, because there are millions of flows being transferred in a network at the same time, and the flow numbers change all the time. Although traditional information entropy has been proved to be an effective metric on network traffic anomaly detection, such a metric shows some limitations in large scale networks with constantly changing flow numbers, and it makes the traditional entropy inefficient for traffic anomaly detection. Another challenge is how to process large-scale traffic data in a scalable way. In this paper, we propose Adjustable Piecewise Entropy for traffic anomaly detection, and implement Adjustable Piecewise Shannon entropy in Hadoop platform with a cluster of five servers in Tsinghua University Campus Network. Furthermore, we analyze and validate Adjustable Piecewise Entropy in both mathematics and experiments. The experiment results show that Adjustable Piecewise Entropy has better performance for traffic anomaly detection. Geng Tian, Xia Yin 0001, Zimu Li, Xingang Shi, Ziyi Lu, Yingya Guo
