2024 Fault diagnosis for wind turbines based on LSTM and feature optimization strategies
abstract
Summary High penetration of renewable energy is the development trend of the future power system. As one of the clean energy sources, wind power generation has an increasing share in the energy market. However, due to the harsh working environment, the high fault rate and poor accessibility of the wind farms, resulting in the difficult maintenance process and high cost. This article proposes a fault diagnosis (FD) method based on long short‐term memory (LSTM) and feature optimization strategies for wind turbines (WTs), thus reducing the operation and maintenance costs of WTs. First, Pearson correlation coefficient analysis is performed on the collected data features to remove redundant features, and wavelet transform is adopted to remove the redundant data, so as to optimize the fault features and fault data. Then the selected features samples are used to train LSTM‐based FD model. Finally, the actual production data is adopted to verify the proposed method. The proposed method can effectively locate the faults, and provide data support for wind farms, thus improving the reliability, safety, and economic benefits of wind farms.

2023 Nonexercise machine learning models for maximal oxygen uptake prediction in national population surveys
abstract
OBJECTIVE: Nonexercise algorithms are cost-effective methods to estimate cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), but the existing models have limitations in generalizability and predictive power. This study aims to improve the nonexercise algorithms using machine learning (ML) methods and data from US national population surveys. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the 1999-2004 data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max), measured through a submaximal exercise test, served as the gold standard measure for CRF in this study. We applied multiple ML algorithms to build 2 models: a parsimonious model using commonly available interview and examination data, and an extended model additionally incorporating variables from Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) and standard laboratory tests in clinical practice. Key predictors were identified using Shapley additive explanation (SHAP). RESULTS: Among the 5668 NHANES participants in the study population, 49.9% were women and the mean (SD) age was 32.5 years (10.0). The light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM) had the best performance across multiple types of supervised ML algorithms. Compared with the best existing nonexercise algorithms that could be applied to the NHANES, the parsimonious LightGBM model (RMSE: 8.51 ml/kg/min [95% CI: 7.73-9.33]) and the extended LightGBM model (RMSE: 8.26 ml/kg/min [95% CI: 7.44-9.09]) significantly reduced the error by 15% and 12% (P < .001 for both), respectively. DISCUSSION: The integration of ML and national data source presents a novel approach for estimating cardiovascular fitness. This method provides valuable insights for cardiovascular disease risk classification and clinical decision-making, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes. CONCLUSION: Our nonexercise models provide improved accuracy in estimating VO2 max within NHANES data as compared to existing nonexercise algorithms.

2016 Robust w-Estimators for Cryo-EM Class Means
abstract
A critical step in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) image analysis is to calculate the average of all images aligned to a projection direction. This average, called the class mean, improves the signal-to-noise ratio in single-particle reconstruction. The averaging step is often compromised because of the outlier images of ice, contaminants, and particle fragments. Outlier detection and rejection in the majority of current cryo-EM methods are done using cross-correlation with a manually determined threshold. Empirical assessment shows that the performance of these methods is very sensitive to the threshold. This paper proposes an alternative: a w-estimator of the average image, which is robust to outliers and which does not use a threshold. Various properties of the estimator, such as consistency and influence function are investigated. An extension of the estimator to images with different contrast transfer functions is also provided. Experiments with simulated and real cryo-EM images show that the proposed estimator performs quite well in the presence of outliers.

2010 4-Channel asynchronous bio-potential recording system
abstract
We present a 4-channel bio-potential recording system using asynchronous delta analog-to-digital converter. The system is designed to reduce the amount of data in neuro-physiological sensors. The circuit includes low-power low-noise amplifiers with asynchronous delta modulators. The analog front end offers a gain of 53 dB within bandwidth of 200 Hz-20 kHz. In this asynchronous data converter, the minimum input-referred delta resolution is 4μV. The input-referred rms noise is 2μV. T h e system was fabricated with AMI 0.5μm CMOS technology. The chip size is 1.5mm by 1.5mm. The power consumption of the 4-channel system with 3.3V supply is 118.8μW in static state and 501.6μW with 240kbps data conversion rate. A graphic user interface was developed to monitor the transmitted signal in real time.
