2023 Dialogue Rewriting via Skeleton-Guided Generation
abstract
Dialogue rewriting aims to transform multi-turn, context-dependent dialogues into well-formed, context-independent text for most NLP systems. Previous dialogue rewriting benchmarks and systems assume a fluent and informative utterance to rewrite. Unfortunately, dialogue utterances from real-world systems are frequently noisy and with various kinds of errors that can make them almost uninformative. In this paper, we first present Real-world Dialogue Rewriting Corpus (RealDia), a new benchmark to evaluate how well current dialogue rewriting systems can deal with real-world noisy and uninformative dialogue utterances. RealDia contains annotated multi-turn dialogues from real scenes with ASR errors, spelling errors, redundancies and other noises that are ignored by previous dialogue rewriting benchmarks. We show that previous dialogue rewriting approaches are neither effective nor data-efficient to resolve RealDia. Then this paper presents Skeleton-Guided Rewriter (SGR), which can resolve the task of dialogue rewriting via a skeleton-guided generation paradigm. Experiments show that RealDia is a much more challenging benchmark for real-world dialogue rewriting, and SGR can effectively resolve the task and outperform previous approaches by a large margin.

2022 Semantic-aware Contrastive Learning for More Accurate Semantic Parsing
abstract
Since the meaning representations are detailed and accurate annotations which express finegrained sequence-level semtantics, it is usually hard to train discriminative semantic parsers via Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) in an autoregressive fashion. In this paper, we propose a semantic-aware contrastive learning algorithm, which can learn to distinguish fine-grained meaning representations and take the overall sequence-level semantic into consideration.Specifically, a multilevel online sampling algorithm is proposed to sample confusing and diverse instances.Three semantic-aware similarity functions are designed to accurately measure the distance between meaning representations as a whole. And a ranked contrastive loss is proposed to pull the representations of the semanticidentical instances together and push negative instances away.Experiments on two standard datasets show that our approach achieves significant improvements over MLE baselines and gets state-of-the-art performances by simply applying semantic-aware contrastive learning on a vanilla SEQ2SEQ model.

2021 Benchmarking Knowledge-Enhanced Commonsense Question Answering via Knowledge-to-Text Transformation
abstract
A fundamental ability of humans is to utilize commonsense knowledge in language understanding and question answering. In recent years, many knowledge-enhanced Commonsense Question Answering (CQA) approaches have been proposed. However, it remains unclear: (1) How far can we get by exploiting external knowledge for CQA? (2) How much potential of knowledge has been exploited in current CQA models? (3) Which are the most promising directions for future CQA? To answer these questions, we benchmark knowledge-enhanced CQA by conducting extensive experiments on multiple standard CQA datasets using a simple and effective knowledge-to-text transformation framework. Experiments show that: (1) Our knowledge-to-text framework is effective and achieves state-of-the-art performance on CommonsenseQA dataset, providing a simple and strong knowledge-enhanced baseline for CQA; (2) The potential of knowledge is still far from being fully exploited in CQA — there is a significant performance gap from current models to our models with golden knowledge; and (3) Context-sensitive knowledge selection, heterogeneous knowledge exploitation, and commonsense-rich language models are promising CQA directions.

2020 Learning to Map Frequent Phrases to Sub-Structures of Meaning Representation for Neural Semantic Parsing
abstract
Neural semantic parsers usually generate meaning representation tokens from natural language tokens via an encoder-decoder model. However, there is often a vocabulary-mismatch problem between natural language utterances and logical forms. That is, one word maps to several atomic logical tokens, which need to be handled as a whole, rather than individual logical tokens at multiple steps. In this paper, we propose that the vocabulary-mismatch problem can be effectively resolved by leveraging appropriate logical tokens. Specifically, we exploit macro actions, which are of the same granularity of words/phrases, and allow the model to learn mappings from frequent phrases to corresponding sub-structures of meaning representation. Furthermore, macro actions are compact, and therefore utilizing them can significantly reduce the search space, which brings a great benefit to weakly supervised semantic parsing. Experiments show that our method leads to substantial performance improvement on three benchmarks, in both supervised and weakly supervised settings.

2019 Deep Sequence-to-Sequence Entity Matching for Heterogeneous Entity Resolution
abstract
Entity Resolution (ER) identifies records from different data sources that refer to the same real-world entity. Conventional ER approaches usually employ a structure matching mechanism, where attributes are aligned, compared and aggregated for ER decision. The structure matching approaches, unfortunately, often suffer from heterogeneous and dirty ER problems. That is, entities from different data sources are described using different schemas, and attribute values may be misplaced, missing, or noisy. In this paper, we propose a deep sequence-to-sequence entity matching model, denoted Seq2SeqMatcher, which can effectively solve the heterogeneous and dirty problems by modeling ER as a token-level sequence-to-sequence matching task. Specifically, we propose an align-compare-aggregate neural network for Seq2Seq entity matching, which can learn the representations of tokens, capture the semantic relevance between tokens, and aggregate matching evidence for accurate ER decisions in an end-to-end manner. Experimental results show that, by comparing entity records in token level and learning all components in an end-to-end manner, our Seq2Seq entity matching model can achieve remarkable performance improvements on 9 standard entity resolution benchmarks.

2019 End-to-End Multi-Perspective Matching for Entity Resolution
abstract
Entity resolution (ER) aims to identify data records referring to the same real-world entity. Due to the heterogeneity of entity attributes and the diversity of similarity measures, one main challenge of ER is how to select appropriate similarity measures for different attributes. Previous ER methods usually employ heuristic similarity selection algorithms, which are highly specialized to specific ER problems and are hard to be generalized to other situations. Furthermore, previous studies usually perform similarity learning and similarity selection independently, which often result in error propagation and are hard to be optimized globally. To resolve the above problems, this paper proposes an end-to-end multi-perspective entity matching model, which can adaptively select optimal similarity measures for heterogenous attributes by jointly learning and selecting similarity measures in an end-to-end way. Experiments on two real-world datasets show that our method significantly outperforms previous ER methods.

2018 Sequence-to-Action: End-to-End Semantic Graph Generation for Semantic Parsing
abstract
This paper proposes a neural semantic parsing approach -Sequence-to-Action, which models semantic parsing as an endto-end semantic graph generation process. Our method simultaneously leverages the advantages from two recent promising directions of semantic parsing.Firstly, our model uses a semantic graph to represent the meaning of a sentence, which has a tight-coupling with knowledge bases.Secondly, by leveraging the powerful representation learning and prediction ability of neural network models, we propose a RNN model which can effectively map sentences to action sequences for semantic graph generation.Experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on OVERNIGHT dataset and gets competitive performance on GEO and ATIS datasets.

2018 Semi-Supervised Lexicon Learning for Wide-Coverage Semantic Parsing
abstract
Semantic parsers critically rely on accurate and high-coverage lexicons. However, traditional semantic parsers usually utilize annotated logical forms to learn the lexicon, which often suffer from the lexicon coverage problem. In this paper, we propose a graph-based semi-supervised learning framework that makes use of large text corpora and lexical resources. This framework first constructs a graph with a phrase similarity model learned by utilizing many text corpora and lexical resources. Next, graph propagation algorithm identifies the label distribution of unlabeled phrases from labeled ones. We evaluate our approach on two benchmarks: Webquestions and Free917. The results show that, in both datasets, our method achieves substantial improvement when comparing to the base system that does not utilize the learned lexicon, and gains competitive results when comparing to state-of-the-art systems.

2017 Investigating the content and form of referring expressions in Mandarin: introducing the Mtuna corpus
abstract
East Asian languages are thought to handle reference differently from English, particularly in terms of the marking of definiteness and number. We present the first Data-Text corpus for Referring Expressions in Mandarin, and we use this corpus to test some initial hypotheses inspired by the theoretical linguistics literature. Our findings suggest that function words deserve more attention in Referring Expression Generation than they have so far received, and they have a bearing on the debate about whether different languages make different trade-offs between clarity and brevity.

2016 Sentence Rewriting for Semantic Parsing
abstract
A major challenge of semantic parsing is the vocabulary mismatch problem between natural language and target ontology. In this paper, we propose a sentence rewriting based semantic parsing method, which can effectively resolve the mismatch problem by rewriting a sentence into a new form which has the same structure with its target logical form.Specifically, we propose two sentence-rewriting methods for two common types of mismatch: a dictionary-based method for 1-N mismatch and a template-based method for N-1 mismatch. We evaluate our sentence rewriting based semantic parser on the benchmark semantic parsing dataset -WEBQUESTIONS.Experimental results show that our system outperforms the base system with a 3.4% gain in F1, and generates logical forms more accurately and parses sentences more robustly. How many people live in chembakolli? How many people is in chembakolli? How many people live in chembakolli india? How many people live there chembakolli? How many people live there in chembakolli? What is the population of Chembakolli india? What currency is used on St Lucia? What is st lucia money? What is the money used in st lucia? What kind of money did st lucia have? What money do st Lucia use?Which money is used in St Lucia?
