2012 Backtracking for More Efficient Large Scale Dynamic Programming
abstract
Reinforcement learning algorithms are widely used to generate policies for complex Markov decision processes. We introduce backtracking, a modification to reinforcement learning algorithms that can significantly improve their performance, particularly for off-line policy generation. Backtracking waits to perform update calculations until the successor's value has been updated, allowing immediate reuse of update calculations. We demonstrate the effectiveness of backtracking on two benchmark processes using both Q-learning and real-time dynamic programming.

1995 Decision-Theoretic Foundations for Causal Reasoning
abstract
We present a definition of cause and effect in terms of decision-theoretic primitives and thereby provide a principled foundation for causal reasoning. Our definition departs from the traditional view of causation in that causal assertions may vary with the set of decisions available. We argue that this approach provides added clarity to the notion of cause. Also in this paper, we examine the encoding of causal relationships in directed acyclic graphs. We describe a special class of influence diagrams, those in canonical form, and show its relationship to Pearl's representation of cause and effect. Finally, we show how canonical form facilitates counterfactual reasoning.

1990 An ordered examination of influence diagrams
abstract
Abstract Influence diagrams are a directed network representation for decision making under uncertainty. The nodes in the diagram represent uncertain and decision variables, and the arcs indicate probabilistic dependence and observability. This paper examines the graphical orderings underlying the influence diagram and the primitive interchange operations that can reorder the network. These operations are sufficient to determine the maximal independent set and minimal relevant sets for any given inference problem, and a linear time algorithm is developed to obtain those sets. This framework is also used to examine and explain properties of the time structure of general influence diagrams with decisions.

1990 Dynamic programming and influence diagrams
abstract
The concept of a super value node is developed to extend the theory of influence diagrams to allow dynamic programming to be performed within this graphical modeling framework. The operations necessary to exploit the presence of these nodes and efficiently analyze the models are developed. The key result is that by representing value function separability in the structure of the graph of the influence diagram, formulation is simplified and operations on the model can take advantage of the separability. From the decision analysis perspective, this allows simple exploitation of separability in the value function of a decision problem. This allows algorithms to be designed to solve influence diagrams that automatically recognize the opportunity for applying dynamic programming. From the decision processes perspective, influence diagrams with super value nodes allow efficient formulation and solution of nonstandard decision process structures. They also allow the exploitation of conditional independence between state variables.>
