| 2026 | Wayfinder: Automated Operating System SpecializationabstractOperating system specialization is a well-known approach to optimize a specific application's performance, memory usage, security, or other important metrics. Specializing an OS for an application is typically a manual process that requires great expertise. Specialization through configuration lends itself well to automation; however, it is challenging due to the sheer size of the configuration space of modern OSes, the difficulty to quantify that space, the long time it takes to evaluate a configuration, and the large number of invalid configurations. Hence, existing attempts at specializing OSes automatically are limited to switching features on and off to minimize memory consumption or attack surface, and cannot target metrics such as performance. | 2022 | Learning to Transfer with von Neumann Conditional DivergenceabstractThe similarity of feature representations plays a pivotal role in the success of problems related to domain adaptation. Feature similarity includes both the invariance of marginal distributions and the closeness of conditional distributions given the desired response y (e.g., class labels). Unfortunately, traditional methods always learn such features without fully taking into consideration the information in y, which in turn may lead to a mismatch of the conditional distributions or the mixup of discriminative structures underlying data distributions. In this work, we introduce the recently proposed von Neumann conditional divergence to improve the transferability across multiple domains. We show that this new divergence is differentiable and eligible to easily quantify the functional dependence between features and y. Given multiple source tasks, we integrate this divergence to capture discriminative information in y and design novel learning objectives assuming those source tasks are observed either simultaneously or sequentially. In both scenarios, we obtain favorable performance against state-of-the-art methods in terms of smaller generalization error on new tasks and less catastrophic forgetting on source tasks (in the sequential setup). | 2021 | Learning Sparsity of Representations with Discrete Latent VariablesabstractDeep latent generative models have attracted increasing attention due to the capacity of combining the strengths of deep learning and probabilistic models in an elegant way. The data representations learned with the models are often continuous and dense. However in many applications, sparse representations are expected, such as learning sparse high dimensional embedding of data in an unsupervised setting, and learning multi-labels from thousands of candidate tags in a supervised setting. In some scenarios, there could be further restriction on degree of sparsity: the number of non-zero features of a representation cannot be larger than a pre-defined threshold$L_{0}$. In this paper we propose a sparse deep latent generative model SDLGM to explicitly model degree of sparsity and thus enable to learn the sparse structure of the data with the quantified sparsity constraint. The resulting sparsity of a representation is not fixed, but fits to the observation itself under the pre-defined restriction. In particular, we introduce to each observation$i$an auxiliary random variable$L_{i}$, which models the sparsity of its representation. The sparse representations are then generated with a two-step sampling process via two Gumbel-Softmax distributions. For inference and learning, we develop an amortized variational method based on MC gradient estimator. The resulting sparse representations are differentiable with backpropagation. The experimental evaluation on multiple datasets for unsupervised and supervised learning problems shows the benefits of the proposed method. | 2019 | MMKG: Multi-modal Knowledge GraphsabstractWe present Mmkg, a collection of three knowledge graphs that contain both numerical features and (links to) images for all entities as well as entity alignments between pairs of KGs. Therefore, multi-relational link prediction and entity matching communities can benefit from this resource. We believe this data set has the potential to facilitate the development of novel multi-modal learning approaches for knowledge graphs. We validate the utility of Mmkg in the $$\mathtt {sameAs}$$ link prediction task with an extensive set of experiments. These experiments show that the task at hand benefits from learning of multiple feature types. Ye Liu 0002, Hui Li 0057, Alberto García-Durán, Mathias Niepert, Daniel Oñoro-Rubio, David S.
