2018 Noncooperative Game-Based Distributed Charging Control for Plug-In Electric Vehicles in Distribution Networks
abstract
Increasing penetration of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) has a substantial impact on the operation of power distribution networks. Given the fast-growing load demands from PEVs and unmatched infrastructure investment in transformer and feeder capacity, the PEV charging is subjected to both spatially and temporally security constraints beyond which the network failure may occur. This paper proposes a game-theory-based distributed charging control method to coordinate large-scale PEVs without compromising the security of the distribution network. Under a noncooperative game framework, a price-driven charging model is designed to minimize the cost of each individual PEV customer while satisfying the network loading constraints. Then, a Newton-type method is developed to find a better Nash equilibrium of the game model at a superlinear convergence rate. Furthermore, an accelerated gradient method is proposed to tackle the subproblem for each user's best response. The update of the user's best response is implemented in a distributed way in order to protect user's privacy. The convergence rate of the proposed algorithms is rigorously proved. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methods are tested on the IEEE 13-bus system.

2017 A DSE-Based Power System Frequency Restoration Strategy for PV-Integrated Power Systems Considering Solar Irradiance Variations
abstract
With power networks undergoing an unprecedented transition from traditional power systems to modern electric grids integrated with renewable energy sources, maintaining frequency stability of generators in modern power systems has become one of the major concerns. Targeting this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel frequency restoration strategy in photovoltaics (PV)-connected power systems using decentralized dynamic state estimation technique and PV power plant as a contingency power source. When a sudden increase in load demand occurs, the output power of PV panels is increased in order to compensate for the shortage of real power capacity of the generator, in order to restore the frequency of a certain generator bus bar. An unscented Kalman filter-based decentralized dynamic estimation is utilized in this study to estimate the frequency of a selected generator bus bar with local noisy voltage and current measurement data acquired by using phasor measurement units. Solar luminous intensity may vary over a period of time in different seasons, weather conditions, etc., which causes the variations in the output power of PV power plants. This irradiance uncertainty is also considered in this study. The proposed control strategy not only incorporates the frequency deviations of a generator bus-bar, but also takes into account the tie-line power deviations under disturbances. Simulation results demonstrate the capacity of proposed control schemes in restoring the frequency of generator bus-bars and also maintaining the tie-line power flowing between adjoining areas at it scheduled value.

2017 Robust Security Constrained-Optimal Power Flow Using Multiple Microgrids for Corrective Control of Power Systems Under Uncertainty
abstract
This paper proposes a new robust security-constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) method to balance the economy. and security requirements under uncertainties associated with renewable generation and load demand. Given the significant growth in microgrid (MG) deployments over the world, this paper explores the potential of using multiple MGs in supporting main grid's security control. Corrective control is employed to relieve postcontingency overflows by effectively coordinating system generators and multiple MGs. An incentive-based mechanism is designed to encourage the MGs to actively cooperate with the main grid for postcontingency recovery, which makes the proposed method to distinguish from the previous models using a traditional centralized control method, such as direct load control. A scenario-decomposition-based approach is then developed to solve the proposed robust SCOPF problem. Numerical simulations on IEEE 14- and IEEE 118-bus systems demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

2017 Intelligent Early Warning of Power System Dynamic Insecurity Risk: Toward Optimal Accuracy-Earliness Tradeoff
abstract
Dynamic insecurity risk of a power system has been increasingly concerned due to the integration of stochastic renewable power sources (such as wind and solar power) and complicated demand response. In this paper, an intelligent early-warning system to achieve reliable online detection of risky operating conditions is proposed. The proposed intelligent system (IS) consists of an ensemble learning model based on extreme learning machine (ELM) and a decision-making process under a multiobjective programming framework. Taking an ensemble form, the randomness existing in individual ELM training is generalized and reliable classification results can be obtained. The decision making is designed for ELM ensemble whose parameters are optimized to search for the optimal tradeoff between the warning accuracy and the warning earliness of the proposed IS. The compromise solution turns out to significantly speed up the overall computation with an acceptable sacrifice in the accuracy (e.g., from 100% to 99.9%). More importantly, the proposed IS can provide multiple and switchable performances to the operators in order to satisfy different local dynamic security assessment requirements.

abstract
This paper presents a novel unscented transform (UT)-based quasi-decentralized load frequency control scheme for power systems. The designed load frequency controllers are decoupled from each other, and can cope with noisy and discrete phasor measurement unit data. The proposed UT-based scheme is applied to a complex nonlinear power system. Furthermore, the design and analysis of the proposed controllers are based on considering the entire network topology.

2016 Risk-Based Power System Security Analysis Considering Cascading Outages
abstract
Successful development of smart grid demands strengthened system security and reliability, which requires effective security analysis in conducting system operation and expansion planning. Classical N - 1 criterion has been widely used to examine every creditable contingency through detailed computations in the past. The adequacy of such approach becomes doubtful in many recent blackouts where cascading outages are usually involved. This may be attributed to the increased complexities and nonlinearities involved in operating conditions and network structures in context of smart grid development. To address security threats, particularly from cascading outages, a new and efficient security analysis approach is proposed, which comprises cascading failure simulation module (CFSM) for post-contingency analysis and risk evaluation module (REM) based on a decorrelated neural network ensembles (DNNE) algorithm. This approach overcomes the drawbacks of high computational cost in classical N-k-induced cascading contingency analysis. Case studies on two different IEEE test systems and a practical transmission system-Polish 2383-bus system have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for risk evaluation of cascading contingency.

2016 Assessing Short-Term Voltage Stability of Electric Power Systems by a Hierarchical Intelligent System
abstract
In the smart grid paradigm, growing integration of large-scale intermittent renewable energies has introduced significant uncertainties to the operations of an electric power system. This makes real-time dynamic security assessment (DSA) a necessity to enable enhanced situational-awareness against the risk of blackouts. Conventional DSA methods are mainly based on the time-domain simulation, which are insufficiently fast and knowledge-poor. In recent years, the intelligent system (IS) strategy has been identified as a promising approach to facilitate real-time DSA. While previous works mainly concentrate on the rotor angle stability, this paper focuses on another yet increasingly important dynamic insecurity phenomenon-the short-term voltage instability, which involves fast and complex load dynamics. The problem is modeled as a classification subproblem for transient voltage collapse and a prediction subproblem for unacceptable dynamic voltage deviation. A hierarchical IS is developed to address the two subproblems sequentially. The IS is based on ensemble learning of random-weights neural networks and is implemented in an offline training, a real-time application, and an online updating pattern. The simulation results on the New England 39-bus system verify its superiority in both learning speed and accuracy over some state-of-the-art learning algorithms.

2015 Impulsive noise detection in PLC with smoothed L0-norm
abstract
Power-line communications (PLC) commonly employs orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) as the modulation technique, and impulsive noise has a significant negative impact on its performance. Using the property of null subcarriers in OFDM and the fact that impulsive noise is sparse, we formulate a minimization problem to detect and estimate the impulsive noise. In previous works, ℓ1-norm minimization was employed to achieve this task. In this paper, we propose to use a smoothed ℓ0-norm minimization algorithm for impulsive noise detection instead. Simulation results show that this approach is promising as it achieves comparable performance as ℓ1-norm minimization but with much lower complexity.

2015 Security constrained unit commitment-based power system dispatching with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
abstract
As plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are expected to be widely used in the near future, a mathematical model is developed based on the traditional security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) formulation to address the power system dispatching problem with PHEVs taken into account. With the premise of power system secure operation, both the economic benefit for PHEV users and the carbon-emission costs are taken into account. Then, the features of PHEVs as mobile energy storage units are exploited to decouple the developed model into two sub-models, involving the unit commitment model and the charging and discharging scheduling model that includes AC power flow constraints. The optimal plug-in capacities for PHEVs and the schemes, including when and where charging and discharging occur, are obtained through a mixed integer programming algorithm and the Newton-Raphson load flow algorithm in addition to the optimal day-ahead unit commitment scheme. Finally, the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed model are verified with a 6-bus test system.

2015 A Novel Network Partitioning Approach in Smart Grid Environment
abstract
Smart grid development highlights the "self-healing" capability as it enables a power system to efficiently and automatically react to disturbances and guide the system to the best possible state. Effectively partitioning the power network (PN) into suitable areas or zones to accommodate subsequent control actions is useful. In this paper, a novel partitioning approach that combines Laplacian spectrum of a PN and self organizing map (SOM) algorithm is proposed. This approach aims to optimize the partitioning solution so as to minimize the real power imbalance and simultaneously maintain a satisfactory voltage profile. Case study is carried out on New England 39-bus system, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

2015 Advanced Pattern Discovery-based Fuzzy Classification Method for Power System Dynamic Security Assessment
abstract
Dynamic security assessment (DSA) is an important issue in modern power system security analysis. This paper proposes a novel pattern discovery (PD)-based fuzzy classification scheme for the DSA. First, the PD algorithm is improved by integrating the proposed centroid deviation analysis technique and the prior knowledge of the training data set. This improvement can enhance the performance when it is applied to extract the patterns of data from a training data set. Secondly, based on the results of the improved PD algorithm, a fuzzy logic-based classification method is developed to predict the security index of a given power system operating point. In addition, the proposed scheme is tested on the IEEE 50-machine system and is compared with other state-of-the-art classification techniques. The comparison demonstrates that the proposed model is more effective in the DSA of a power system.

2014 Coordinated Control of Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Reactive Power and Battery Energy Storage Systems to Improve the Voltage Profile of a Residential Distribution Feeder
abstract
Increasing penetration of photovoltaic (PV), as well as increasing peak load demand, has resulted in poor voltage profile for some residential distribution networks. This paper proposes coordinated use of PV and battery energy storage (BES) to address voltage rise and/or dip problems. The reactive capability of PV inverter combined with droop-based BES system is evaluated for rural and urban scenarios (having different \mbi R/X ratios). Results show that reactive compensation from PV inverters alone is sufficient to maintain acceptable voltage profile in an urban scenario (low-resistance feeder), whereas coordinated PV and BES support is required for the rural scenario (high-resistance feeder). Constant, as well as variable, droop-based BES schemes are analyzed. The required BES sizing and associated cost to maintain the acceptable voltage profile under both schemes are presented. Uncertainties in PV generation and load are considered, with probabilistic estimation of PV generation and randomness in load modeled to characterize the effective utilization of BES. Actual PV generation data and distribution system network data are used to verify the efficacy of the proposed method.

2013 Joint peak amplitude and impulsive noise clippings in OFDM-based power line communications
abstract
Impulsive noise is one of the main channel impairments in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based power line communications (PLC). Clipping nonlinearites such as conventional clipping, blanking, joint blanking/clipping, and deep clipping have been proposed to mitigate the impulsive noise. However, OFDM systems result in high peak amplitude after inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) at the transmitter, which leads to large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). High peak amplitude can be falsely clipped by the impulsive noise clipper at the receiver leading to poor system performance. In this paper we propose a joint peak amplitude clipping and impulsive noise clipping nonlinearities to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance.

2012 An Intelligent Dynamic Security Assessment Framework for Power Systems With Wind Power
abstract
The increasing penetration of wind power can alter the dynamic security characteristic of a power system. To accommodate rapid and volatile wind power variations, dynamic security assessment (DSA) against foreseeable disturbances is required to be carried out online and provide security monitoring results within sufficiently small time frame. Based on soft computing (SC) technologies, this paper develops an intelligent framework for real-time DSA of power systems with large penetration of wind power. It consists of a DSA engine whose role is to perform real-time DSA of the power system, a wind power and load demand (W&LF) forecasting engine for offline and online predicting wind power generation and electricity load demand, a database generation (DBG) engine for generating instances to train the DSA engine, and a model updating (MU) engine for online updating the DSA engine. Case studies are conducted on two benchmark systems where high DSA efficiency and accuracy are obtained. This framework can be an ideal candidate for advanced security monitoring in the future SmartGrid control centres.

2012 Quantum-Inspired Particle Swarm Optimization for Power System Operations Considering Wind Power Uncertainty and Carbon Tax in Australia
abstract
In this paper, a computational framework for integrating wind power uncertainty and carbon tax in economic dispatch (ED) model is developed. The probability of stochastic wind power based on nonlinear wind power curve and Weibull distribution is included in the model. In order to solve the revised dispatch strategy, quantum-inspired particle swarm optimization (QPSO) is also adopted, which shows stronger search ability and quicker convergence speed. The dispatch model is tested on a modified IEEE benchmark system involving six thermal units and two wind farms using the real wind speed data obtained from two meteorological stations in Australia.

2012 Optimal Dispatch of Electric Vehicles and Wind Power Using Enhanced Particle Swarm Optimization
abstract
In this paper, an economic dispatch model, which can take into account the uncertainties of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and wind generators, is developed. A simulation based approach is first employed to study the probability distributions of the charge/discharge behaviors of PEVs. The probability distribution of wind power is also derived based on the assumption that the wind speed follows the Rayleigh distribution. The mathematical expectations of the generation costs of wind power and V2G (vehicle to grid) power are then derived analytically. An optimization algorithm is developed based on the well-established particle swarm optimization (PSO) and interior point method to solve the economic dispatch model. The proposed approach is demonstrated by the IEEE 118-bus test system.

2009 Enhancing the Computing Efficiency of Power System Dynamic Analysis with PSS E
abstract
Power system simulator for engineering (PSS_E) has gained great success in power energy industry for its powerful simulation and analysis functions. Along with market deregulation, power system planning and stability analysis warrants more effective and fast techniques due to the ever expanding large-scale interconnection of power networks. Running large-scale system multiple case studies on PSS_E will cost intensive time and efforts. In this paper, we accelerate PSS_E dynamic simulations with EnFuzion based distributed computing technique. This approach is proved to be effective by testing with 39-bus New England power system ¿n-1¿ and ¿n-1-1¿ contingency analysis. The results show that the simulation process can be speeded dramatically and the total elapsed time can be reduced proportionally with the increase of computer nodes.

2007 Conditional Value-at-Risk based mid-term generation operation planning in electricity market environment
abstract
In the electricity market environment, it is very important for generation companies (GENCOs) to make the optimal mid-term generation operation planning (MTGOP) which includes the trading strategies in the spot market and the contract market as well as the suitable unit maintenance scheduling (UMS). In making the decision of MTGOP, GENCOs are subject to risk due to uncertain factors, and hence should manage the inevitable risk rationally. Given this background, a new MTGOP model is first developed for a GENCO as a price taker so as to maximize its profit and minimize its risk measured by the Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR). In this model, the bilateral physical contracts are taken into consideration, together with the transmission congestion and the operation constraints of generating units. Then, a solving method is given by integrating the Genetic Algorithm and the Monte Carlo method. Finally, a numerical example is used to show the features of the proposed method.

2006 A Differential Evolution Based Method for Power System Planning
abstract
Power system planning is a complex multi-objective optimization problem. It aims at locating the minimum cost of additional transmission lines that must be installed to satisfy the forecasted load in a power system. A number of different methods for power system planning have been investigated over the past decades. In this paper, a differential evolution (DE) based approach is proposed as an optimization tool to solve the power system planning problem. A comparison between genetic algorithms, evolutionary strategy (ES), and five different DE schemes are carried out on two benchmark power systems. The results shown that, as a relatively new heuristic optimization method, DE is able to provide robust and efficient solution to power system planning problems.

2003 Optimal dispatch of spinning reserve in a competitive electricity market using genetic algorithm
abstract
Ancillary service plays a key role in maintaining operation security of the power system in a competitive electricity market. The spinning reserve is one of the most important ancillary services that should be provided effectively. This paper presents the design of an integrated market for energy and spinning reserve service with particular emphasis on coordinated dispatch of bulk power and spinning reserve services. A new market dispatching mechanism has been developed to minimize the cost of service while maintaining system security. Genetic algorithms (GA) are used for finding the global optimal solutions for this dispatch problem. 1997 SHAPES: A Novel Approach for Learning Search Heuristics in Under-Constrained Optimization Problems
abstract
Although much research in machine learning has been carried out on acquiring knowledge for problem-solving in many problem domains, little effort has been focused on learning search-control knowledge for solving optimization problems. This paper reports on the development of SHAPES, a system that learns heuristic search guidance for solving optimization problems in intractable, under-constrained domains based on the Explanation-Based Learning (EBL) framework. The system embodies two new and novel approaches to machine learning. First, it makes use of explanations of varying levels of approximation as a mean for verifying heuristic-based decisions, allowing heuristic estimates to be revised and corrected during problem-solving. The provision of such a revision mechanism is particularly important when working in intractable and under-constrained domains, where heuristics tend to be highly over-generalized, and hence at times will give rise to incorrect results. Second, it employs a new linear and quadratic programming-based weight-assignment algorithm formulated to direct search toward optimal solutions under best-first search. The algorithm offers a direct method for assigning rule strengths and, in so doing, avoids the need to address the credit-assignment problem faced by other iterative weight-adjustment methods.
