2026 Object-Centric Data Synthesis for Category-level Object Detection (Student Abstract)
abstract
Deep learning approaches to object detection have achieved reliable detection of specific object classes in images. However, extending a model’s detection capability to new object classes requires large amounts of annotated training data, which is costly and time-consuming to acquire, especially for long-tailed classes with insufficient representation in existing datasets. We compare four distinct methods of generating synthetic data to finetune object detection models on novel object categories, particularly when limited data is available in an object-centric format (multi-view images/3D models). Our approaches are based on simple image processing techniques, 3D rendering, and image generation models, each varying in complexity and realism. We assess how our methods, which use object-centric data to synthesize realistic, cluttered images with varying contextual coherence, enable models to achieve category-level generalization in real-world data. We demonstrate significant performance boosts within this data-constrained experimental setting.

2022 Nonparametric Bayesian Regression and Classification on Manifolds, With Applications to 3D Cochlear Shapes
abstract
Advanced shape analysis studies such as regression and classification need to be performed on curved manifolds, where often, there is a lack of standard statistical formulations. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a novel machine-learning method on the shape space of curves that avoids direct inference on infinite-dimensional spaces and instead performs Bayesian inference with spherical Gaussian processes decomposition. As an application, we study the shape of the cochlear spiral-shaped cavity within the petrous part of the temporal bone. This problem is particularly challenging due to the relationship between shape and gender, especially in children. Experimental results for both synthetic and real data show improved performance compared to state-of-the-art methods.

2012 Diffeomorphic Sulcal Shape Analysis on the Cortex
abstract
We present a diffeomorphic approach for constructing intrinsic shape atlases of sulci on the human cortex. Sulci are represented as square-root velocity functions of continuous open curves in R³, and their shapes are studied as functional representations of an infinite-dimensional sphere. This spherical manifold has some advantageous properties--it is equipped with a Riemannian L² metric on the tangent space and facilitates computational analyses and correspondences between sulcal shapes. Sulcal shape mapping is achieved by computing geodesics in the quotient space of shapes modulo scales, translations, rigid rotations, and reparameterizations. The resulting sulcal shape atlas preserves important local geometry inherently present in the sample population. The sulcal shape atlas is integrated in a cortical registration framework and exhibits better geometric matching compared to the conventional euclidean method. We demonstrate experimental results for sulcal shape mapping, cortical surface registration, and sulcal classification for two different surface extraction protocols for separate subject populations.

2011 Fast edge-filtered image upsampling
abstract
We present a novel edge preserved interpolation scheme for fast upsampling of natural images. The proposed piecewise hyperbolic operator uses a slope-limiter function that conveniently lends itself to higher-order approximations and is responsible for restricting spatial oscillations arising due to the edges and sharp details in the image. As a consequence the upsampled image not only exhibits enhanced edges, and discontinuities across boundaries, but also preserves smoothly varying features in images. Experimental results show an improvement in the PSNR compared to typical cubic, and spline-based interpolation approaches.

2011 Shape Analysis of Elastic Curves in Euclidean Spaces
abstract
This paper introduces a square-root velocity (SRV) representation for analyzing shapes of curves in euclidean spaces under an elastic metric. In this SRV representation, the elastic metric simplifies to the IL(2) metric, the reparameterization group acts by isometries, and the space of unit length curves becomes the unit sphere. The shape space of closed curves is the quotient space of (a submanifold of) the unit sphere, modulo rotation, and reparameterization groups, and we find geodesics in that space using a path straightening approach. These geodesics and geodesic distances provide a framework for optimally matching, deforming, and comparing shapes. These ideas are demonstrated using: 1) shape analysis of cylindrical helices for studying protein structure, 2) shape analysis of facial curves for recognizing faces, 3) a wrapped probability distribution for capturing shapes of planar closed curves, and 4) parallel transport of deformations for predicting shapes from novel poses.

2010 Diffeomorphic sulcal shape analysis for cortical surface registration
abstract
We present an intrinsic framework for constructing sulcal shape atlases on the human cortex. We propose the analysis of sulcal and gyral patterns by representing them by continuous open curves in ℝ(3). The space of such curves, also termed as the shape manifold is equipped with a Riemannian L(2) metric on the tangent space, and shows desirable properties while matching shapes of sulci. On account of the spherical nature of the shape space, geodesics between shapes can be computed analytically. Additionally, we also present an optimization approach that computes geodesics in the quotient space of shapes modulo rigid rotations and reparameterizations. We also integrate the elastic shape model into a surface registration framework for a population of 176 subjects, and show a considerable improvement in the constructed surface atlases.

2008 Modeling spatial patterns of shapes
abstract
We introduce a framework for modeling spatial patterns of shapes formed by multiple objects in an image. Our approach is graph-based where each node denotes an object and attributes of a node consist of that object's shape, position, orientation, and scale. Neighboring node are connected by edges, and they are allowed to interact in terms of their attributes/features. Similar to a Markov random field, but now applied to more sophisticated features space, the interactions are governed by energy functionals that can be internal or external. The internal energies, composed entirely of interactions between nodes, may include similarity between shapes and pose. The external energies, composed of outside influences, may include the data-likelihood term and the a-priori information about the shapes and the locations of the objects.

2007 A Novel Representation for Riemannian Analysis of Elastic Curves in Rn
abstract
We propose a novel representation of continuous, closed curves in ℝ(n) that is quite efficient for analyzing their shapes. We combine the strengths of two important ideas - elastic shape metric and path-straightening methods -in shape analysis and present a fast algorithm for finding geodesics in shape spaces. The elastic metric allows for optimal matching of features while path-straightening provides geodesics between curves. Efficiency results from the fact that the elastic metric becomes the simple (2) metric in the proposed representation. We present step-by-step algorithms for computing geodesics in this framework, and demonstrate them with 2-D as well as 3-D examples.

2007 Riemannian Analysis of Probability Density Functions with Applications in Vision
abstract
Applications in computer vision involve statistically analyzing an important class of constrained, non-negative functions, including probability density functions (in texture analysis), dynamic time-warping functions (in activity analysis), and re-parametrization or non-rigid registration functions (in shape analysis of curves). For this one needs to impose a Riemannian structure on the spaces formed by these functions. We propose a "spherical" version of the Fisher-Rao metric that provides closed-form expressions for geodesies and distances, and allows fast computation of sample statistics. To demonstrate this approach, we present an application in planar shape classification.

abstract
We describe an approach for statistical analysis of shapes of closed curves using tools from differential geometry. This approach uses geodesic paths to define a metric on shape space, that is used to compare shapes, to compute intrinsic statistics for a set of shapes, and to define probability models on shape spaces. We demonstrate this approach using: (i) interpolation of heart-wall boundaries in echocardiographic image sequences; and (ii) a study of shapes of human silhouettes in infrared surveillance images.

2005 Statistical Shape Analysis: Clustering, Learning, and Testing
abstract
Using a differential-geometric treatment of planar shapes, we present tools for: 1) hierarchical clustering of imaged objects according to the shapes of their boundaries, 2) learning of probability models for clusters of shapes, and 3) testing of newly observed shapes under competing probability models. Clustering at any level of hierarchy is performed using a mimimum variance type criterion criterion and a Markov process. Statistical means of clusters provide shapes to be clustered at the next higher level, thus building a hierarchy of shapes. Using finite-dimensional approximations of spaces tangent to the shape space at sample means, we (implicitly) impose probability models on the shape space, and results are illustrated via random sampling and classification (hypothesis testing). Together, hierarchical clustering and hypothesis testing provide an efficient framework for shape retrieval. Examples are presented using shapes and images from ETH, Surrey, and AMCOM databases.

2004 Analysis of Planar Shapes Using Geodesic Paths on Shape Spaces
abstract
For analyzing shapes of planar, closed curves, we propose differential geometric representations of curves using their direction functions and curvature functions. Shapes are represented as elements of infinite-dimensional spaces and their pairwise differences are quantified using the lengths of geodesics connecting them on these spaces. We use a Fourier basis to represent tangents to the shape spaces and then use a gradient-based shooting method to solve for the tangent that connects any two shapes via a geodesic. Using the Surrey fish database, we demonstrate some applications of this approach: 1) interpolation and extrapolations of shape changes, 2) clustering of objects according to their shapes, 3) statistics on shape spaces, and 4) Bayesian extraction of shapes in low-quality images.
