Modal Feature Optimization Network with Prompt for Multimodal Sentiment AnalysisabstractMultimodal sentiment analysis(MSA) is mostly used to understand human emotional states through multimodal. However, due to the fact that the effective information carried by multimodal is not balanced, the modality containing less effective information cannot fully play the complementary role between modalities. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to fully explore the effective information in modalities and further optimize the under-optimized modal representation. To this end, we propose a novel Modal Feature Optimization Network (MFON) with a Modal Prompt Attention (MPA) mechanism for MSA. Specifically, we first determine which modalities are under-optimized in MSA, and then use relevant prompt information to focus the model on these features. This allows the model to focus more on the features of the modalities that need optimization, improving the utilization of each modality’s feature representation and facilitating initial information aggregation across modalities. Subsequently, we design an intra-modal knowledge distillation strategy for under-optimized modalities. This approach preserves the integrity of the modal features. Furthermore, we implement inter-modal contrastive learning to better extract related features across modalities, thereby optimizing the entire network. Finally, sentiment prediction is carried out through the effective fusion of multimodal information. Extensive experimental results on public benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms existing state-of-the-art models. Xiangmin Zhang, Wei Wei 0002, Shihao Zou

Catch the Star: Weight Recovery Attack Using Side-Channel Star Map Against DNN AcceleratorabstractThe rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology must be connected to the arithmetic support of high-performance hardware. However, when the deep neural network (DNN) accelerator performs inference tasks at the edge end, the sensitive data of DNN will generate leakage through side-channel information. The adversary can recover the model structure and weight parameters of DNN by using the side-channel information, which seriously affects the protection of necessary intellectual property (IP) of DNN, so the hardware security of the DNN accelerator is critical. In the current research of Side-channel attack (SCA) for matrix multiplication units, such as systolic arrays, the linear multiplication operation leads to a more extensive weights search space for the SCA, and extracting all the weight parameters requires higher attack conditions. This article proposes a new power SCA method, which includes a Collision-Correlation Power Analysis (Collision-CPA) and Correlation-based Weight Search Algorithm (C-WSA) to address the problem. The Collision-CPA reduces the attack conditions for the SCA by building multiple Hamming Distance (HD)-based power leakage models for the systolic array. Meanwhile, the C-WSA dramatically reduces the weights search space. In addition, the concept of a Side-channel star map (SCSM) is proposed for the first time in this article, and the adversary can quickly and accurately locate the correct weight information in the SCSM. Through experiments, we recover all the weight parameters of a$3\times 3$systolic array based on 100000 power traces, in which the weight search space is reduced by up to 97.7%. For the DNN accelerator at the edge, especially the systolic array structure, our proposed novel SCA aligns more with practical attack scenarios, with lower attack conditions, and higher attack efficiency. | 2024 | Dual-Rail Precharge Logic-Based Side-Channel Countermeasure for DNN Systolic ArrayabstractDeep neural network (DNN) accelerators are widely used in cloud-edge-end and other application scenarios. Researchers recently focused on extracting secret information from DNN through side-channel attacks (SCAs), which substantially threaten AI security. In this brief, we propose a high-security, high-performance side-channel countermeasure using dual-rail precharge logic (DPL) for the DNN systolic array. By collecting and analyzing 5000 power traces, our proposed DPL-based systolic array provides a significantly lower correlation coefficient of 0.045. Through system-level side-channel security evaluation on field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), the DPL-based systolic array can effectively defend against weight extraction under power SCAs. | 2021 | Gini-Impurity Index AnalysisabstractIn the past few decades, DPA-based side-channel attack strategies, such as DPA and CPA, have shown strong ability to analyze the security of the cryptographic implementations. However, the unpredictability of the leakage model and the correspondence between leakage behavior of the target device and the hypothetical leakage value make it less-effective without prior knowledge. Therefore, in this paper, we present a novel generic side-channel analysis method called Gini-impurity Index Analysis (GIA), utilizing Gini-impurity Index as the distinguisher, which can perform well even without any leakage model and is not sensitive to the existing methods' restrictions about the leakage behavior. Firstly, we introduce the basic idea of GIA. According to the proposed GIA attack strategy, the Gini-impurity index for each key hypothesis should be calculated, determined by the clustered power consumption and the classified subsets based on the key dependent target function. Secondly, we verify the feasibility and evaluate the efficiency of GIA with different target functions by the practical experimental results against AES-128 implemented on an AT89S52 microcontroller. We present one possible multivariate extension of GIA and find the advantage of GIA on leakage information utilization. Thirdly, we present the results of comparisons. On the one hand, we compare GIA with three widely-used distinguishers under simulated traces in various leakage scenarios and practical traces with Hamming-weight-related leakage. Results confirm that GIA can always perform well with different leakage models in most situations. On the other hand, we analyze the relationship between GIA and Mutual Information Analysis (MIA). Theoretical and experimental results confirm that these two methods can obtain similar attack results. However, the guessing entropy of GIA is lower than MIA by up to 21%, and the averaged computational time overhead of GIA is lower than MIA by up to 13.3%, indicating that GIA is more efficient than MIA. Compared to traditional MIA, GIA is easier to operate and more flexible with noise. Therefore, GIA is an efficient and useful alternative to these existed strategies. | 2019 | The role of domain knowledge in document selection from search resultsabstractIt is a frequently seen scenario that when people are not familiar with their search topics, they use a simple keyword search, which leads to a large amount of search results in multiple pages. This makes it difficult for users to pick relevant documents, especially given that they are not knowledgeable of the topics. To explore how systems can better help users find relevant documents from search results, the current research analyzed document selection behaviors of users with different levels of domain knowledge (DK). Data were collected in a laboratory study with 35 participants each searching on four tasks in the genomics domain. The results show that users with high and low DK levels selected different sets of documents to view; those high in DK read more documents and gave higher relevance ratings for the viewed documents than those low in DK did. Users with low DK tended to select documents ranking toward the top of the search result lists, and those with high in DK tended to also select documents ranking down the search result lists. The findings help design search systems that can personalize search results to users with different levels of DK. Jingjing Liu 0007, Xiangmin Zhang

Correlation power attack on a message authentication code based on SM3abstractHash-based message authentication code (HMAC) is widely used in authentication and message integrity. As a Chinese hash algorithm, the SM3 algorithm is gradually winning domestic market value in China. The side channel security of HMAC based on SM3 (HMAC-SM3) is still to be evaluated, especially in hardware implementation, where only intermediate values stored in registers have apparent Hamming distance leakage. In addition, the algorithm structure of SM3 determines the difficulty in HMAC-SM3 side channel analysis. In this paper, a skillful bit-wise chosen-plaintext correlation power attack procedure is proposed for HMAC-SM3 hardware implementation. Real attack experiments on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) board have been performed. Experimental results show that we can recover the key from the hypothesis space of 2 256 based on the proposed procedure. Ye Yuan 0003, Kaige Qu, Liji Wu, Jia-Wei Ma, Xiangmin Zhang

A Novel Multiple-Bits Collision Attack Based on Double Detection with Error-Tolerant MechanismabstractSide-channel collision attacks are more powerful than traditional side-channel attack without knowing the leakage model or establishing the model. Most attack strategies proposed previously need quantities of power traces with high computational complexity and are sensitive to mistakes, which restricts the attack efficiency seriously. In this paper, we propose a multiple-bits side-channel collision attack based on double distance voting detection (DDVD) and also an improved version, involving the error-tolerant mechanism, which can find all 120 relations among 16 key bytes when applied to AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm. In addition, we compare our collision detection method called DDVD with the Euclidean distance and the correlation-enhanced collision method under different intensity of noise, which indicates that our detection technique performs better in the circumstances of noise. Furthermore, 4-bit model of our collision detection method is proven to be optimal in theory and in practice. Meanwhile the corresponding practical attack experiments are also performed on a hardware implementation of AES-128 on FPGA board successfully. Results show that our strategy needs less computation time but more traces than LDPC method and the online time for our strategy is about 90% less than CECA and 96% less than BCA with 90% success rate. | 2016 | A High Precision Multi-Cell Battery Voltage Detecting Circuit for Battery Management SystemsabstractThis paper presents a high precision direct multi-cell Battery Voltage Detecting Circuit (BVDC) for Battery Management Systems (BMS) in electric vehicles. BVDC in BMS must be able to accommodate direct voltage input up to tens of volts from series connected batteries, fulfil the precision needs by battery state of charge estimation algorithm. The BVDC circuit is designed with a 0.5μm 1-poly 3-metal high voltage (HV) 60V Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) semiconductor process. System optimization design of HV multiplexer and incremental sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in BVDC circuit eliminates the need of amplifier-resistor based level shift, and any static current through HV signal path, which greatly improved the conversion accuracy. Post layout extracted simulation result shows that the typical conversion error is less than 0.3mV@1MHz for series connected batteries without extra calibration. | 2015 | Predicting users' domain knowledge in information retrieval using multiple regression analysis of search behaviorsabstractUser domain knowledge affects search behaviors and search success. Predicting a user's knowledge level from implicit evidence such as search behaviors could allow an adaptive information retrieval system to better personalize its interaction with users. This study examines whether user domain knowledge can be predicted from search behaviors by applying a regression modeling analysis method. We identify behavioral features that contribute most to a successful prediction model. A user experiment was conducted with 40 participants searching on task topics in the domain of genomics. Participant domain knowledge level was assessed based on the users' familiarity with and expertise in the search topics and their knowledge of MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms in the categories that corresponded to the search topics. Users' search behaviors were captured by logging software, which includes querying behaviors, document selection behaviors, and general task interaction behaviors. Multiple regression analysis was run on the behavioral data using different variable selection methods. Four successful predictive models were identified, each involving a slightly different set of behavioral variables. The models were compared for the best on model fit, significance of the model, and contributions of individual predictors in each model. Each model was validated using the split sampling method. The final model highlights three behavioral variables as domain knowledge level predictors: the number of documents saved, the average query length, and the average ranking position of the documents opened. The results are discussed, study limitations are addressed, and future research directions are suggested. Xiangmin Zhang, Jingjing Liu 0007, Michael J. Cole, Nicholas J. Belkin

A novel bit scalable leakage model based on genetic algorithmabstractAbstract With the growing popularity of smart integrated circuit (IC) cards, the chip security is attracting more and more attention. Researches on the attack and protection of smart IC cards have become increasingly hot. Side‐channel attack is the practical and effective method, which has brought enormous threat. The efficiency of attack depends on the extent of the leakage model, which characterizes the practical applications. In the power analysis attack, the classical leakage model usually exploits the power consumption of single S‐box, which is called divide and conquer. Taking data encryption standard (DES) algorithm, for example, the attack on each S‐box needs to search the key space of 2 6 in a brute‐force way. In this paper, we propose a novel leakage model, which is more flexible than the classical leakage model. The novel leakage model is based on the power consumption of multiple S‐boxes, and the implementation of this method is combined with genetic algorithm. We can establish leakage model based on the Hamming distance of round output generated by eight S‐boxes in DES algorithm. The experiment verifies the fact that the leakage model of eight S‐boxes can decrease the traces number up to 52% than the classical one based on single S‐box for DES algorithm. It also decreases the traces number up to 32% for SM4 algorithm. All the measurements of power data are acquired from a practical smart IC card. We also conclude that increasing noise, using variable clock, and limiting the lifetime of root key can be the choices of defensive strategy. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. | 2013 | A 10 Gbps in-line network security processor based on configurable hetero-multi-coresabstractThis paper deals with an in-line network security processor (NSP) design that implements the Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) protocol processing for the 10 Gbps Ethernet. The 10 Gbps high speed data transfer, the IPSec processing including the crypto-operation, the database query, and IPSec header processing are integrated in the design. The in-line NSP is implemented using 65 nm CMOS technology and the layout area is 2.5 mm×3 mm with 360 million gates. A configurable crossbar data transfer skeleton implementing an iSLIP scheduling algorithm is proposed, which enables simultaneous data transfer between the heterogeneous multiple cores. There are, in addition, a high speed input/output data buffering mechanism and design of high performance hardware structures for modules, wherein the transfer efficiency and the resource utilization are maximized and the IPSec protocol processing achieves 10 Gbps line speed. A high speed and low power hardware look-up method is proposed, which effectively reduces the area and power dissipation. The post simulation results demonstrate that the design gives a peak throughput for the Authentication Header (AH) transport mode of 10.06 Gbps with the average test packet length of 512 bytes under the clock rate of 250 MHz, and power dissipation less than 1 W is obtained. An FPGA prototype is constructed to verify the function of the design. A test bench is being set up for performance and function verification. Yun Niu, Liji Wu, Xiangmin Zhang, Hong Yi Chen

Exploring and predicting search task difficultyabstractWe report on an investigation of behavioral differences between users in difficult and easy search tasks. Behavioral factors that can be used in real-time to predict task difficulty are identified. User data was collected in a controlled lab experiment (n=38) where each participant completed four search tasks in the genomics domain. We looked at user behaviors that can be obtained by systems at three levels, distinguished by the time point when the measurements can be done. They are: 1) first-round level at the beginning of the search, 2) accumulated level during the search, and 3) whole-session level by the end of the search. Results show that a number of user behaviors at all three levels differed between easy and difficult tasks. Models predicting task difficulty at all three levels were developed and evaluated. A real-time model incorporating first-round and accumulated levels of behaviors (FA) had fairly good prediction performance (accuracy 83%; precision 88%), which is comparable with the model using the whole-session level behaviors which are not real-time (accuracy 75%; precision 92%). We also found that for efficiency purpose, using only a limited number of significant variables (FC_FA) can obtain a prediction accuracy of 75%, with a precision of 88%. Our findings can help search systems predict task difficulty and adapt search results to users. Jingjing Liu 0007, Chang Liu 0007, Michael J. Cole, Nicholas J. Belkin, Xiangmin Zhang

Knowledge effects on document selection in search results pagesabstractClick through events in search results pages (SERPs) are not reliable implicit indicators of document relevance. A user's task and domain knowledge are key factors in recognition and link selection and the most useful SERP document links may be those that best match the user's domain knowledge. User study participants rated their knowledge of genomics MeSH terms before conducting 2004 TREC Genomics Track tasks. Each participant's document knowledge was represented by their knowledge of the indexing MeSH terms. Results show high, intermediate, and low domain knowledge groups had similar document selection SERP rank distributions. SERP link selection distribution varied when participant knowledge of the available documents was analyzed. High domain knowledge participants usually selected a document with the highest personal knowledge rating. Low domain knowledge participants were reasonably successful at selecting available documents of which they had the most knowledge, while intermediate knowledge participants often failed to do so. This evidence for knowledge effects on SERP link selection may contribute to understanding the potential for personalization of search results ranking based on user domain knowledge. Michael J. | 2011 | Task and user effects on reading patterns in information searchabstractWe report on an investigation into people’s behaviors on information search tasks, specifically the relation between eye movement patterns and task characteristics. We conducted two independent user studies (n = 32 and n = 40), one with journalism tasks and the other with genomics tasks. The tasks were constructed to represent information needs of these two different users groups and to vary in several dimensions according to a task classification scheme. For each participant we classified eye gaze data to construct models of their reading patterns. The reading models were analyzed with respect to the effect of task types and Web page types on reading eye movement patterns. We report on relationships between tasks and individual reading behaviors at the task and page level. Specifically we show that transitions between scanning and reading behavior in eye movement patterns and the amount of text processed may be an implicit indicator of the current task type facets. This may be useful in building user and task models that can be useful in personalization of information systems and so address design demands driven by increasingly complex user actions with information systems. | 2010 | LOGISMOS - Layered Optimal Graph Image Segmentation of Multiple Objects and Surfaces: Cartilage Segmentation in the Knee JointabstractA novel method for simultaneous segmentation of multiple interacting surfaces belonging to multiple interacting objects, called LOGISMOS (layered optimal graph image segmentation of multiple objects and surfaces), is reported. The approach is based on the algorithmic incorporation of multiple spatial inter-relationships in a single n-dimensional graph, followed by graph optimization that yields a globally optimal solution. The LOGISMOS method's utility and performance are demonstrated on a bone and cartilage segmentation task in the human knee joint. Although trained on only a relatively small number of nine example images, this system achieved good performance. Judged by dice similarity coefficients (DSC) using a leave-one-out test, DSC values of 0.84 ± 0.04, 0.80 ± 0.04 and 0.80 ± 0.04 were obtained for the femoral, tibial, and patellar cartilage regions, respectively. These are excellent DSC values, considering the narrow-sheet character of the cartilage regions. Similarly, low signed mean cartilage thickness errors were obtained when compared to a manually-traced independent standard in 60 randomly selected 3-D MR image datasets from the Osteoarthritis Initiative database-0.11 ± 0.24, 0.05 ± 0.23, and 0.03 ± 0.17 mm for the femoral, tibial, and patellar cartilage thickness, respectively. The average signed surface positioning errors for the six detected surfaces ranged from 0.04 ± 0.12 mm to 0.16 ± 0.22 mm. The reported LOGISMOS framework provides robust and accurate segmentation of the knee joint bone and cartilage surfaces of the femur, tibia, and patella. As a general segmentation tool, the developed framework can be applied to a broad range of multiobject multisurface segmentation problems. | 2009 | ICRPfinder: a fast pattern design algorithm for coding sequences and its application in finding potential restriction enzyme recognition sitesabstractBACKGROUND: Restriction enzymes can produce easily definable segments from DNA sequences by using a variety of cut patterns. There are, however, no software tools that can aid in gene building -- that is, modifying wild-type DNA sequences to express the same wild-type amino acid sequences but with enhanced codons, specific cut sites, unique post-translational modifications, and other engineered-in components for recombinant applications. A fast DNA pattern design algorithm, ICRPfinder, is provided in this paper and applied to find or create potential recognition sites in target coding sequences. RESULTS: ICRPfinder is applied to find or create restriction enzyme recognition sites by introducing silent mutations. The algorithm is shown capable of mapping existing cut-sites but importantly it also can generate specified new unique cut-sites within a specified region that are guaranteed not to be present elsewhere in the DNA sequence. CONCLUSION: ICRPfinder is a powerful tool for finding or creating specific DNA patterns in a given target coding sequence. ICRPfinder finds or creates patterns, which can include restriction enzyme recognition sites, without changing the translated protein sequence. ICRPfinder is a browser-based JavaScript application and it can run on any platform, in on-line or off-line mode. Xiangmin Zhang, Phillip Stafford, Valentin Dinu

A user's search and the search result are treated as an isolated event. To consider the collaborative nature of information retrieval (IR) in a group/organization or even societal context, this article proposes a method that measures relevance based on group/peer consensus. The method can be used in IR experiments. In this method, the relevance of a document is decided by group consensus, or more specifically, by the number of users (or experiment participants) who retrieve it for the same search question. The more users who retrieve it, the more relevant the document will be considered. A user's search performance can be measured by a relevance score based on this notion. The article reports the results of an experiment using this method to compare the search performance of different types of users. Related issues with the method and future directions are also discussed. Xiangmin Zhang |

Assessment of the effects of user characteristics on mental models of information retrieval systemsabstractThis article reports the results of a study that investigated effects of four user characteristics on users' mental models of information retrieval systems: educational and professional status, first language, academic background, and computer experience. The repertory grid technique was used in the study. Using this method, important components of information retrieval systems were represented by nine concepts, based on four IR experts' judgments. Users' mental models were represented by factor scores that were derived from users' matrices of concept ratings on different attributes of the concepts. The study found that educational and professional status, academic background, and computer experience had significant effects in differentiating users on their factor scores. First language had a borderline effect, but the effect was not significant enough at α = 0.05 level. Specific different views regarding IR systems among different groups of users are described and discussed. Implications of the study for information science and IR system designs are suggested. | 1998 | Tissue Characterization in Intravascular Ultrasound ImagesabstractIntravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging permits direct visualization of vascular pathology. It has been used to evaluate lumen and plaque in coronary arteries and its clinical significance for guidance of coronary interventions is increasingly recognized. Conventional manual evaluation is tedious and time-consuming. This paper describes a highly automated approach to segmentation of coronary wall and plaque, and determination of plaque composition in individual IVUS images and pullback image sequences. The determined regions of plaque were classified in one of three classes: soft plaque, hard plaque, or hard plaque shadow. The method's performance was assessed in vitro and in vivo in comparison with observer-defined independent standards. In the analyzed images and image sequences, the mean border positioning error of the wall and plaque borders ranged from 0.13-0.17 mm. Plaque classification correctness was 90%. | 1995 | Tree pruning strategy in automated detection of coronary trees in cineangiogramsabstractThe authors present a tree pruning strategy used in their novel approach to automated detection of coronary trees in cineangiograms. After the initial steps of the authors' tree detection method, the preliminary tree contains a large number of false branches that must be removed by pruning. The tree pruning approach is based on information about branch absolute and relative lengths, gray level profile information, and information about the structure of the identified tree. The authors have assessed the performance of their tree pruning strategy in 13 coronary angiograms by comparison to manually identified coronary trees. After pruning, the percentage of false branches dropped from 87% to 8%. Computer-detected branch lengths correlated well with observer-identified branch lengths (r=0.95). Pruning substantially improved the accuracy of the detected trees. Xiangmin Zhang, Steve M. Collins, Milan Sonka

| 1995 | Segmentation of intravascular ultrasound images: a knowledge-based approachabstractIntravascular ultrasound imaging of coronary arteries provides important information about coronary lumen, wall, and plaque characteristics. Quantitative studies of coronary atherosclerosis using intravascular ultrasound and manual identification of wall and plaque borders are limited by the need for observers with substantial experience and the tedious nature of manual border detection. We have developed a method for segmentation of intravascular ultrasound images that identifies the internal and external elastic laminae and the plaque-lumen interface. The border detection algorithm was evaluated in a set of 38 intravascular ultrasound images acquired from fresh cadaveric hearts using a 30 MHz imaging catheter. To assess the performance of our border detection method we compared five quantitative measures of arterial anatomy derived from computer-detected borders with measures derived from borders manually defined by expert observers. Computer-detected and observer-defined lumen areas correlated very well (r=0.96, y=1.02x+0.52), as did plaque areas (r=0.95, y=1.07x-0.48), and percent area stenosis (r=0.93, y=0.99x-1.34.) Computer-derived segmental plaque thickness measurements were highly accurate. Our knowledge-based intravascular ultrasound segmentation method shows substantial promise for the quantitative analysis of in vivo intravascular ultrasound image data.
