2025 Semi-Supervised Multimodal Classification Through Learning from Modal and Strategic Complementarities
abstract
Supervised multimodal classification has been proven to outperform unimodal classification in the image-text domain. However, this task is highly dependent on abundant labeled data. To perform multimodal classification in data-insufficient scenarios, in this study, we explore semi-supervised multimodal classification (SSMC) that only requires a small amount of labeled data and plenty of unlabeled data. Specifically, we first design baseline SSMC models by combining known semi supervised pseudo-labeling methods with the two most commonly used modal fusion strategies, i.e. feature-level fusion and label-level aggregation. Based on our investigation and empirical study of the baselines, we discover two complementarities that may benefit SSMC if properly exploited: the predictions from different modalities (modal complementarity) and modal fusion strategies for pseudo-labeling (strategic complementarity). Therefore, we propose a Modal and Strategic Complementarity (MSC) framework for SSMC. Concretely, to exploit modal complementarity, we propose to learn reliability weights for the predictions from different modalities and refine the fusion scores. To learn from strategic complementarity, we introduce a dual KL divergence loss to guide the balance of quantity and quality of pseudo-labeled data selection. Extensive empirical studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

2024 Open-Set Semi-Supervised Text Classification via Adversarial Disagreement Maximization
abstract
Open-Set Semi-Supervised Text Classification (OSTC) aims to train a classification model on a limited set of labeled texts, alongside plenty of unlabeled texts that include both in-distribution and out-of-distribution examples. In this paper, we revisit the main challenge in OSTC, i.e., outlier detection, from a measurement disagreement perspective and innovatively propose to improve OSTC performance by directly maximizing the measurement disagreements.Based on the properties of in-measurement and crossmeasurements, we design an Adversarial Disagreement Maximization (ADM) model that synergeticly optimizes the measurement disagreements. In addition, we develop an abnormal example detection and measurement calibration approach to guarantee the effectiveness of ADM training.Experiment results and comprehensive analysis of three benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of our model.

2023 Open-Set Semi-Supervised Text Classification with Latent Outlier Softening
abstract
Semi-supervised text classification (STC) has been extensively researched and reduces human annotation. However, existing research assuming that unlabeled data only contains in-distribution texts is unrealistic. This paper extends STC to a more practical Open-set Semi-supervised Text Classification (OSTC) setting, which assumes that the unlabeled data contains out-of-distribution (OOD) texts. The main challenge in OSTC is the false positive inference problem caused by inadvertently including OOD texts during training. To address the problem, we first develop baseline models using outlier detectors for hard OOD-data filtering in a pipeline procedure. Furthermore, we propose a Latent Outlier Softening (LOS) framework that integrates semi-supervised training and outlier detection within probabilistic latent variable modeling. LOS softens the OOD impacts by the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm and weighted entropy maximization. Experiments on 3 created datasets show that LOS significantly outperforms baselines.

2020 Fabriccio: Touchless Gestural Input on Interactive Fabrics
abstract
We present Fabriccio, a touchless gesture sensing technique developed for interactive fabrics using Doppler motion sensing. Our prototype was developed using a pair of loop antennas (one for transmitting and the other for receiving), made of conductive thread that was sewn onto a fabric substrate. The antenna type, configuration, transmission lines, and operating frequency were carefully chosen to balance the complexity of the fabrication process and the sensitivity of our system for touchless hand gestures, performed at a 10 cm distance. Through a ten-participant study, we evaluated the performance of our proposed sensing technique across 11 touchless gestures as well as 1 touch gesture. The study result yielded a 92.8% cross-validation accuracy and 85.2% leave-one-session-out accuracy. We conclude by presenting several applications to demonstrate the unique interactions enabled by our technique on soft objects.

2019 HyperSight: boosting distant 3D vision on a single dual-camera smartphone
abstract
Smartphones with dual cameras are increasingly popular due to the need of supporting 3D vision. The depth information is critical for 3D vision. However, the two cameras on a smartphone are too close to accurately estimate the depth information especially for objects beyond two meters. In this paper, we propose an innovative system, called HyperSight, to estimate the depth information of objects using a dual camera smartphone. HyperSight realizes a virtual longbaseline stereo vision rig by having a user to move the phone in the air. The phone movement is continuously tracked and estimated using the short-baseline dual camera seeing nearby objects. We implement HyperSight as software on a Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) smartphone and conduct real-world experiments. The results show that when measuring feature-rich objects at a distance of five meters, HyperSight achieves a mean depth error of 6cm, which is up to 10× and 18× improvement in the accuracy compared with the stereo vision system using the native dual cameras and the Measure app based on ARKit 1 on mobile devices, respectively.
