| 2025 | Context-Alignment: Activating and Enhancing LLMs Capabilities in Time SeriesabstractRecently, leveraging pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) for time series (TS) tasks has gained increasing attention, which involves activating and enhancing LLMs' capabilities. Many methods aim to activate LLMs' capabilities based on token-level alignment, but overlook LLMs' inherent strength in natural language processing — their deep understanding of linguistic logic and structure rather than superficial embedding processing. We propose Context-Alignment (CA), a new paradigm that aligns TS with a linguistic component in the language environments familiar to LLMs to enable LLMs to contextualize and comprehend TS data, thereby activating their capabilities. Specifically, such context-level alignment comprises structural alignment and logical alignment, which is achieved by Dual-Scale Context-Alignment GNNs (DSCA-GNNs) applied to TS-language multimodal inputs. Structural alignment utilizes dual-scale nodes to describe hierarchical structure in TS-language, enabling LLMs to treat long TS data as a whole linguistic component while preserving intrinsic token features. Logical alignment uses directed edges to guide logical relationships, ensuring coherence in the contextual semantics. Following the DSCA-GNNs framework, we propose an instantiation method of CA, termed Few-Shot prompting Context-Alignment (FSCA), to enhance the capabilities of pre-trained LLMs in handling TS tasks. FSCA can be flexibly and repeatedly integrated into various layers of pre-trained LLMs to improve awareness of logic and structure, thereby enhancing performance. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness of FSCA and the importance of Context-Alignment across tasks, particularly in few-shot and zero-shot forecasting, confirming that Context-Alignment provides powerful prior knowledge on context. | 2025 | Survey on Large Language Model-Enhanced Reinforcement Learning: Concept, Taxonomy, and MethodsabstractWith extensive pretrained knowledge and high-level general capabilities, large language models (LLMs) emerge as a promising avenue to augment reinforcement learning (RL) in aspects, such as multitask learning, sample efficiency, and high-level task planning. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature in LLM-enhanced RL and summarize its characteristics compared with conventional RL methods, aiming to clarify the research scope and directions for future studies. Utilizing the classical agent-environment interaction paradigm, we propose a structured taxonomy to systematically categorize LLMs' functionalities in RL, including four roles: information processor, reward designer, decision-maker, and generator. For each role, we summarize the methodologies, analyze the specific RL challenges that are mitigated and provide insights into future directions. Finally, the comparative analysis of each role, potential applications, prospective opportunities, and challenges of the LLM-enhanced RL are discussed. By proposing this taxonomy, we aim to provide a framework for researchers to effectively leverage LLMs in the RL field, potentially accelerating RL applications in complex applications, such as robotics, autonomous driving, and energy systems. | 2024 | FMGCN: Federated Meta Learning-Augmented Graph Convolutional Network for EV Charging Demand ForecastingabstractRecent booming successes of electric vehicles (EVs) motivate emerging exploration of spatio-temporal EV charging demand forecasting to inform policy making. Recent studies have contributed to remarkable accuracy improvement by developing deep learning methods. However, when they access massive amounts of data and frequently exchange data through the Internet of Things (IoT), data silos and inefficient training emerge as main challenges. To tackle these challenges, this study proposes an integrated approach for regional EV charging demand forecasting, named FMGCN, which consists of two modules, namely 1) Spatio-temporal Learning module, which introduces spatial and temporal attentions to capture the underlying charging patterns between different regions and cities effectively; and 2) Distributed Pretraining module, which incorporates Federated Learning and Meta-Learning to enhance the adaptivity and generalisability of the forecasting model. A comprehensive evaluation based on a real-world dataset of 25,246 public EV charging piles shows that the proposed model outperforms other representative models with 1) an average improvement of 29.9% in forecasting errors; 2) an acceleration of 65% in convergence speed; and 3) a sound adaptability to support varying charging demand. | 2024 | A Phone-Based Distributed Ambient Temperature Measurement System With an Efficient Label-Free Automated Training StrategyabstractEnhancing the energy efficiency of buildings significantly relies on monitoring indoor ambient temperature. The potential limitations of conventional temperature measurement techniques, together with the omnipresence of smartphones, have redirected researchers' attention towards the exploration of phone-based ambient temperature estimation methods. However, existing phone-based methods face challenges such as insufficient privacy protection, difficulty in adapting models to various phones, and hurdles in obtaining enough labeled training data. In this study, we propose a distributed phone-based ambient temperature estimation system which enables collaboration among multiple phones to accurately measure the ambient temperature in different areas of an indoor space. This system also provides an efficient, cost-effective approach with a few-shot meta-learning module and an automated label generation module. It shows that with just 5 new training data points, the temperature estimation model can adapt to a new phone and reach a good performance. Moreover, the system uses crowdsourcing to generate accurate labels for all newly collected training data, significantly reducing costs. Additionally, we highlight the potential of incorporating federated learning into our system to enhance privacy protection. We believe this study can advance the practical application of phone-based ambient temperature measurement, facilitating energy-saving efforts in buildings. | 2023 | Cloud-Edge Collaboration-Based Local Voltage Control for DGs With Privacy PreservationabstractThe increased distributed generators (DGs) have exacerbated voltage violations in active distribution networks (ADNs). Local reactive power control of DG inverters can realize a fast response to frequent voltage fluctuations. However, commonly used model-based voltage control depends upon accurate network parameters and entire ADN data, which may cause the sensitive information leakage of ADN and DG behaviors in practical operation. In this article, a cloud-edge collaboration-based local voltage control strategy for DGs is proposed with privacy preservation. First, a local voltage control framework is established based on cloud-edge collaboration, in which a surrogate model is built based on the graph convolutional neural networks to estimate the ADN voltages. By transferring the surrogate model, the edge side can obtain the exact voltage estimation in the local curve tuning process without the authority of the whole ADN data, preserving the network parameters of ADN. Then, the interarea coordination based on federated learning is proposed to realize the parameter updating of DG control curves, which can achieve better voltage control performance. By updating surrogate submodels based on private data distributed across multiple edge devices, federated learning can effectively preserve DG behaviors. Finally, the effectiveness and adaptability of the proposed control strategy are validated using the modified IEEE 33-node system. The proposed local DG control strategy can effectively cope with voltage problems and enhance the adaptability to variations in practical operation states while considering privacy preservation. | 2022 | Peer-to-Peer Electricity Trading of Interconnected Flexible Distribution Networks Based on Distributed LedgerabstractThe condition of power imbalance in flexible distribution networks (FDNs) is deteriorated due to the high penetration of distributed generators. Through peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity trading, multiple regions interconnected by soft open points (SOPs) can flexibly exchange power to alleviate power imbalance. As the physical foundation of P2P transactions, SOP regulation guarantees accurate instruction execution. Besides, smart contracts based on distributed ledger technology (DLT) facilitate highly credible P2P transactions. Oriented for the economic operation of interconnected FDNs, this article proposes a DLT-based P2P electricity trading method based on intelligent SOP regulation. First, a smart contract is designed for P2P transactions of FDNs, in which trading solutions are automatically settled with a modified highest combined offer principle. Then, a trading platform is built for the P2P electricity trading of interconnected FDNs. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on a practical FDN with four-terminal SOPs in Tianjin. | 2021 | Data-Driven Adaptive Operation of Soft Open Points in Active Distribution NetworksabstractThe integration of soft open point (SOP) effectively improves the flexibility of active distribution networks (ADNs). However, in practical operation, accurate network parameters are difficult to obtain and the operation state changes rapidly with distributed generators (DGs). With the development of information technologies, massive operation data can be acquired in ADNs. How to utilize multisource data has become the key to realize the intelligent operation of ADNs. This article proposes a data-driven operation strategy of SOP based on model-free adaptive control (MFAC). First, considering the inaccurate parameters and frequent change of operation states, a data-driven framework is formulated for the real-time operation of SOP. Then, the operation strategies of multiple SOPs are further improved with interarea coordination. The results of case studies show that driven by the measurement data, the potential benefits of SOPs are explored to adaptively respond to system state changes and improve the operational performance of ADNs.
