2015 Real-Time Analytical Processing with SQL Server
abstract
Over the last two releases SQL Server has integrated two specialized engines into the core system: the Apollo column store engine for analytical workloads and the Hekaton in-memory engine for high-performance OLTP workloads. There is an increasing demand for real-time analytics, that is, for running analytical queries and reporting on the same system as transaction processing so as to have access to the freshest data. SQL Server 2016 will include enhancements to column store indexes and in-memory tables that significantly improve performance on such hybrid workloads. This paper describes four such enhancements: column store indexes on in-memory tables, making secondary column store indexes on disk-based tables updatable, allowing B-tree indexes on primary column store indexes, and further speeding up the column store scan oper ator.

2004 Compression schemes for differential categorical stream clustering
abstract
Stream data analysis differs significantly from traditional data processing. To process the data online the algorithm has to work in one pass, incorporating new data into a model maintained in main memory. Storing a model or synopsis of processed data in the memory, which we call "data compression", is an important technique in both incremental and differential stream mining. This paper proposes several data compression schemes in one-pass categorical data clustering, and demonstrates their performance on synthetic and real data. Our compression schemes can efficiently generate compact representations of original data, so as to enable the algorithm to process streams at high speed and detect the changes in underlying data. The example algorithm based on these compression schemes achieves good accuracy in short execution time.

2002 SmartPointers: personalized scientific data portals in your hand
abstract
The SmartPointer system provides a paradigm for utilizing multiple light-weight client endpoints in a real-time scientific visualization infrastructure. Together, the client and server infrastructure form a new type of data portal for scientific computing. The clients can be used to personalize data for the needs of the individual scientist. This personalization of a shared dataset is designed to allow multiple scientists, each with their laptops or iPaqs to explore the dataset from different angles and with different personalized filters. As an example, iPaq clients can display 2D derived data functions which can be used to dynamically update and annotate the shared data space, which might be visualized separately on a large immersive display such as a CAVE. Measurements are presented for such a system, built upon the ECho middleware system developed at Georgia Tech.
