| 2023 | Semantic Proximity Update of GNSS/INS/VINS for Seamless Vehicular Navigation Using Smartphone SensorsabstractThe advancement of microelectromechanical systems (MEMSs) and the Internet of Things (IoT) have enabled a wide range of applications based on smartphones. However, the existing navigation methods using these low-cost MEMS sensors cannot provide acceptable information for location-based applications in various environments. Their technical limitations, such as severe signal attenuation, reflections, blockages, error accumulation, and low quality of images degrade the performance of global navigation satellite system (GNSS), inertial navigation system (INS), and camera. To mitigate these limitations, especially in indoor vehicle navigation, we first analyze the performance of the existing fusion algorithm, then we propose semantic proximity update (SPU) based on a pretrained model of real-time object detection to enhance the integration of GNSS, INS, and visual INS (VINS). SPU consists of the detection of geo-referenced objects and the relative movement to infer the absolute position. The proposed INS/GNSS/VINS/SPU can maintain long-term acceptable accuracy regardless of the indoor/outdoor environment. It only requires the use of smartphone sensors; thus, this scheme has no additional cost for users. Experimental results indicated that the errors of this scheme in horizontal positioning and 3-D positioning were 51.6% and 86.8% lower, respectively, than those of a conventional integration. | 2022 | Reliable Evaluation of Navigation States Estimation for Automated Driving SystemsabstractTo achieve a higher level of automation for modern development in automated driving systems (ADS), reliable evaluation of navigation states estimation is crucial demand. Although the presence of several approaches on evaluation are presented, but no study has examined problems related to establish a trustable reference system for fully evaluating performance of ADS. This paper proposes new strategies for better handling with the ground truth system for full navigation evaluation with automated driving applications. The first strategy involves making use of the integration solutions of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) as an initial pose for normal distribution transform (NDT) with high-definition (HD) point cloud map. An accurate LiDAR-based navigation estimation could be then achieved. In the second strategy, LiDAR-based position is used as the measurements to update with the loosely coupled (LC)INS/GNSS/LiDAR integration system. The preliminary results indicate that the proposed LC-INS/GNSS/LiDAR strategy not only estimates full navigation solutions, but also seems to provide more accurate and reliable for evaluating the positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) services compared to conventional methods. | 2022 | Stability and Bifurcation Analysis of a Diffusive miR-9/Hes1 Network With Time DelayabstractIn this paper, a model of miR-9/Hes1 interaction network involving one time delay and diffusion effect under the Neumann boundary conditions is studied. First of all, the stability of the positive equilibrium and the existence of local Hopf bifurcation and Turing-Hopf bifurcation are investigated by analyzing the associated characteristic equation. Second, a algorithm for determining the direction, stability and period of the corresponding bifurcating periodic solutions is presented. The obtained results suggest that the quiescent progenitors (high steady-state Hes1) can be easily excited into oscillation by time delay whereas the differentiated state (low steady-state Hes1) is basically unaffected, and the integrated effect of delay and diffusion can induce the occurrence of spatially inhomogeneous patterns. More importantly, spatially homogeneous/inhomogeneous periodic solutions can exist simultaneously when the diffusion coefficients of Hes1 mRNA and Hes1 protein are appropriately small, conversely, there is only spatially homogeneous periodic solutions. Intriguingly, both temporal patterns and spatial-temporal patterns show that time delay can prompt Hes1 protein to shift from the high concentration state to the low concentration one ("ON" → "OFF"), where Hes1 protein shows low level whereas miR-9 shows high level. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to verify and visualize theoretical results. Cheng-Xian Lin, Haihong Liu 0001, Tonghua Zhang |

| 2013 | Intelligent Sensor Placement for Hot Server Detection in Data CentersabstractRecent studies have shown that a significant portion of the total energy consumption of many data centers is caused by the inefficient operation of their cooling systems. Without effective thermal monitoring with accurate location information, the cooling systems often use unnecessarily low temperature set points to overcool the entire room, resulting in excessive energy consumption. Sensor network technology has recently been adopted for data-center thermal monitoring because of its nonintrusive nature for the already complex data center facilities and robustness to instantaneous CPU or disk activities. However, existing solutions place sensors in a simplistic way without considering the thermal dynamics in data centers, resulting in unnecessarily degraded hot server detection probability. In this paper, we first formulate the problems of sensor placement for hot server detection in a data center as constrained optimization problems in two different scenarios. We then propose a novel placement scheme based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to take various factors, such as cooling systems and server layout, as inputs to analyze the thermal conditions of the data center. Based on the CFD analysis in various server overheating scenarios, we apply data fusion and advanced optimization techniques to find a near-optimal sensor placement solution, such that the probability of detecting hot servers is significantly improved. Our empirical results in a real server room demonstrate the detection performance of our placement solution. Extensive simulation results in a large-scale data center with 32 racks also show that the proposed solution outperforms several commonly used placement solutions in terms of detection probability.
