2025 Multi-Scale Hyperbolic Contrastive Learning for Cross-Subject EEG Emotion Recognition
abstract
Electroencephalography (EEG) serves as a reliable and objective signal for affective computing applications. However, individual differences in EEG signals pose a significant challenge for emotion recognition tasks across subjects. To address this, we proposed a novel method called Multi-Scale Hyperbolic Contrastive Learning (MSHCL), which leverages event-relatedness to learn subject-invariant representations. MSHCL employs contrastive losses at two different scales—emotion and stimulus—to effectively capture complex EEG patterns within a hyperbolic space hierarchy. Our method is evaluated on three datasets: SEED, MPED, and FACED. It achieves 89.3% accuracy on the three-class task for SEED, 38.8% on the seven-class task for MPED, and 77.0% and 45.7% on the binary and nine-class tasks for FACED in cross-subject emotion recognition. These results demonstrate that the proposed MSHCL method superior performance over other baselines and its effectiveness in learning subject-invariant representations.

2025 Decoding SSVEP Via Calibration-Free TFA-Net: A Novel Network Using Time-Frequency Features
abstract
Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) signals offer high information transfer rates and non-invasive brain-to-device connectivity, making them highly practical. In recent years, deep learning techniques, particularly convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures, have gained prominence in EEG (e.g., SSVEP) decoding because of their nonlinear modeling capabilities and autonomy from manual feature extraction. However, most studies using CNNs employ temporal signals as the input and cannot directly mine the implicit frequency information, which may cause crucial frequency details to be lost and challenges in decoding. By contrast, the prevailing supervised recognition algorithms rely on a lengthy calibration phase to enhance algorithm performance, which could impede the popularization of SSVEP based BCIs. To address these problems, this study proposes the Time-Frequency Attention Network (TFA-Net), a novel CNN model tailored for SSVEP signal decoding without the calibration phase. Additionally, we introduce the Frequency Attention and Channel Recombination modules to enhance ability of TFA-Net to infer finer frequency-wise attention and extract features efficiently from SSVEP in the time-frequency domain. Classification results on a public dataset demonstrated that the proposed TFA-Net outperforms all the compared models, achieving an accuracy of 79.00% $\pm$ 0.27% and information transfer rate of 138.82 $\pm$ 0.78 bits/min with a 1-s data length. TFA-Net represents a novel approach to SSVEP identification as well as time-frequency signal analysis, offering a calibration-free solution that enhances the generalizability and practicality of SSVEP based BCIs.

2024 Generative Listener EEG for Speech Emotion Recognition Using Generative Adversarial Networks With Compressed Sensing
abstract
Currently, emotional features in speech emotion recognition are typically extracted from the speeches, However, recognition accuracy can be influenced by factors such as semantics, language, and cross-speech datasets. Achieving consistent emotional judgment with human listeners is a key challenge for AI to address. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals prove to be an effective means of capturing authentic and meaningful emotional information in humans. This positions EEG as a promising tool for detecting emotional cues conveyed in speech. In this study, we proposed a novel approach named CS-GAN that generates listener EEGs in response to a speaker's speech, specifically aimed at enhancing cross-subject emotion recognition. We utilized generative adversarial networks (GANs) to establish a mapping relationship between speech and EEGs to generate stimulus-induced EEGs. Furthermore, we integrated compressive sensing theory (CS) into the GAN-based EEG generation method, thereby enhancing the fidelity and diversity of the generated EEGs. The generated EEGs were then processed using a CNN-LSTM model to identify the emotional categories conveyed in the speech. By averaging these EEGs, we obtained the event-related potentials (ERPs) to improve the cross-subject capability of the method. The experimental results demonstrate that the generated EEGs by this method outperform real listener EEGs by 9.31% in cross-subject emotion recognition tasks. Furthermore, the ERPs show an improvement of 43.59%, providing evidence for the effectiveness of this method in cross-subject emotion recognition.

2024 Insula-Medial Prefrontal Cortex Functional Connectivity Modulated by Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation: An fMRI Study
abstract
Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is an emerging neuromodulation technology that has been reported to be beneficial in the treatment of diseases by several studies, but its exact mechanism of action is still unclear. It has been demonstrated that taVNS can influence interoceptive signals. Notably, the processing of interoceptive signals is directly related to many diseases, such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia. The insula and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) communicate during the bottom-up transmission of taVNS-induced signals, and both play a role in interoceptive signal processing. By focusing on the insula and MPFC, our research pioneers detail the potential interactions between interoceptive signal processing and the neuromodulation effects of taVNS, providing novel insights into the neurobiological mechanisms of taVNS. Two functional connectivity (FC) analyses (region of interest-based and seed-based) were used in this study. We observed that negative connectivity between the insula and the MPFC was significantly weakened following taVNS, while there were no statistical changes in the sham group. Our findings elucidate potential mechanisms linking vagal activity with intrinsic FC among specific brain regions and networks. Specifically, our results indicate that taVNS may enhance the ability to flexibly balance interoceptive awareness and cognitive experiences by modulating the FC between the insula and MPFC. The modulation effects may impact body-brain interactions, suggesting the mechanism of taVNS in therapeutic applications.

2023 Block Distributed Joint Temporal-Frequency- Phase Modulation for Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential Based Brain-Computer Interface With a Limited Number of Frequencies
abstract
How to encode as many targets as possible with limited frequency resources is a grave problem that restricts the application of steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). In the current study, we propose a novel block-distributed joint temporal-frequency-phase modulation method for a virtual speller based on SSVEP-based BCI. A 48-target speller keyboard array is virtually divided into eight blocks and each block contains six targets. The coding cycle consists of two sessions: in the first session, each block flashes at different frequencies while all the targets in the same block flicker at the same frequency; in the second session, all the targets in the same block flash at different frequencies. Using this method, 48 targets can be coded with only eight frequencies, which greatly reduces the frequency resources required, and average accuracies of 86.81 $\pm$ 9.41% and 91.36 $\pm$ 6.41% were obtained for both the offline and online experiments. This study provides a new coding approach for a large number of targets with a small number of frequencies, which can further expand the application potential of SSVEP-based BCI.

2022 Brain Fingerprinting and Lie Detection: A Study of Dynamic Functional Connectivity Patterns of Deception Using EEG Phase Synchrony Analysis
abstract
This study investigated the brain functional connectivity (FC) patterns related to lie detection (LD) tasks with the purpose of analyzing the underlying cognitive processes and mechanisms in deception. Using the guilty knowledge test protocol, 30 subjects were divided randomly into guilty and innocent groups, and their electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were recorded on 32 electrodes. Phase synchrony of EEG was analyzed between different brain regions. A few-trials-based relative phase synchrony (FTRPS) measure was proposed to avoid the false synchronization that occurs due to volume conduction. FTRPS values with a significantly statistical difference between two groups were employed to construct FC patterns of deception, and the FTRPS values from the FC networks were extracted as the features for the training and testing of the support vector machine. Finally, four more intuitive brain fingerprinting graphs (BFG) on delta, theta, alpha and beta bands were respectively proposed. The experimental results reveal that deceptive responses elicited greater oscillatory synchronization than truthful responses between different brain regions, which plays an important role in executing lying tasks. The functional connectivity in the BFG is mainly implicated in the visuo-spatial imagery, bottom-top attention and memory systems, work memory and episodic encoding, and top-down attention and inhibition processing. These may, in part, underlie the mechanism of communication between different brain cortices during lying. High classification accuracy demonstrates the validation of BFG to identify deception behavior, and suggests that the proposed FTRPS could be a sensitive measure for LD in the real application.

2022 Flexible Brain Transitions Between Hierarchical Network Segregation and Integration Associated With Cognitive Performance During a Multisource Interference Task
abstract
Cognition involves locally segregated and globally integrated processing. This process is hierarchically organized and linked to evidence from hierarchical modules in brain networks. However, researchers have not clearly determined how flexible transitions between these hierarchical processes are associated with cognitive performance. Here, we designed a multisource interference task (MSIT) and introduced the nested-spectral partition (NSP) method to detect hierarchical modules in brain functional networks. By defining hierarchical segregation and integration across multiple levels, we showed that the MSIT requires higher network segregation in the whole brain and most functional systems but generates higher integration in the control system. Meanwhile, brain networks have more flexible transitions between segregated and integrated configurations in the task state. Crucially, higher functional flexibility in the resting state, less flexibility in the task state and more efficient switching of the brain from resting to task states were associated with better task performance. Our hierarchical modular analysis was more effective at detecting alterations in functional organization and the phenotype of cognitive performance than graph-based network measures at a single level.

2019 Deception Decreases Brain Complexity
abstract
Extensive evidence suggests the feasibility of lie detection using electroencephalograms (EEGs). However, it is largely unknown whether there are any differences in the nonlinear features of EEGs between guilty and innocent subjects. In this study, we proposed a complexity-based method to distinguish lying from truth telling. A total of 35 participants were randomly divided into two groups, and their EEG signals were recorded with 14 electrodes. Averages for sequential sets of five trials were first calculated for the probe responses within each subject. Next, a common wavelet entropy (WE) measure and an improved one were used to quantify complexity from each five-trial average. The results show that for both measures, the WE values in the guilty subjects are statistically lower than those in the innocent subjects for most of the 14 electrodes. More importantly, using the improved measure, the difference in WE between the two groups of subjects significantly increases for 11 brain regions compared with the values from the common measure. Finally, the highest balanced classification accuracy, 89.64%, is achieved when using the combined WE feature vector in five brain regions from the sites of Pz, P3, C4, Cz, and C3. Our findings indicate that the lying task elicits a more ordered brain activity in some specific brain regions than the task of telling the truth. This study not only demonstrates that improved WE measurements could be a powerful quantitative index for detecting lying but also sheds light on the brain mechanisms underlying deceptive behaviors.

2019 Multimodal Medical Image Fusion Based on Fuzzy Discrimination With Structural Patch Decomposition
abstract
Multimodal medical image fusion, emerging as a hot topic, aims to fuse images with complementary multi-source information. In this paper, we propose a novel multimodal medical image fusion method based on structural patch decomposition (SPD) and fuzzy logic technology. First, the SPD method is employed to extract two salient features for fusion discrimination. Next, two novel fusion decision maps called an incomplete fusion map and supplemental fusion map are constructed from salient features. In this step, the supplemental map is constructed by our defined two different fuzzy logic systems. The supplemental and incomplete maps are then combined to construct an initial fusion map. The final fusion map is obtained by processing the initial fusion map with a Gaussian filter. Finally, a weighted average approach is adopted to create the final fused image. Additionally, an effective color medical image fusion scheme that can effectively prevent color distortion and obtain superior diagnostic effects is also proposed to enhance fused images. Experimental results clearly demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of subjective visual and quantitative evaluations.

2018 Sinusoidal Signal Assisted Multivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition for Brain-Computer Interfaces
abstract
A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a communication approach that permits cerebral activity to control computers or external devices. Brain electrical activity recorded with electroencephalography (EEG) is most commonly used for BCI. Noise-assisted multivariate empirical mode decomposition (NA-MEMD) is a data-driven time-frequency analysis method that can be applied to nonlinear and nonstationary EEG signals for BCI data processing. However, because white Gaussian noise occupies a broad range of frequencies, some redundant components are introduced. To solve this leakage problem, in this study, we propose using a sinusoidal assisted signal that occupies the same frequency ranges as the original signals to improve MEMD performance. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed sinusoidal signal assisted MEMD (SA-MEMD) method, we compared the decomposition performances of MEMD, NA-MEMD, and the proposed SA-MEMD using synthetic signals and a real-world BCI dataset. The spectral decomposition results indicate that the proposed SA-MEMD can avoid the generation of redundant components and over decomposition, thus, substantially reduce the mode mixing and misalignment that occurs in MEMD and NA-MEMD. Moreover, using SA-MEMD as a signal preprocessing method instead of MEMD or NA-MEMD can significantly improve BCI classification accuracy and reduce calculation time, which indicates that SA-MEMD is a powerful spectral decomposition method for BCI.

2017 A Double-Partial Least-Squares Model for the Detection of Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials
abstract
Establishing a high-accuracy and training-free brain-computer interface (BCI) system is essential for improving BCI practicality. In this study, we propose for the first time a training-free double-partial least-squares (D-PLS) model for steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) detection that consists of double-layer PLS, a PLS spatial filter, and a PLS feature extractor. Electroencephalographic data from 11 healthy volunteers under four different visual stimulation frequencies were used to test the proposed method. Compared with commonly used spatial filters, minimum energy combination and average maximum contrast combination, the classification accuracies could be improved 2-10% by our proposed PLS spatial filter. Furthermore, our proposed PLS feature extractor achieved better performance than current feature extraction methods, namely power spectral density analysis, canonical correlation analysis, and the use of the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator. The average classification accuracy for our proposed D-PLS model exceeded [Formula: see text] when the signal time window was longer than 3.5 s and reached as high as [Formula: see text] when the time window was 5 s. Moreover, the D-PLS model can be easily set without training data, so it can be used widely in SSVEP-based BCI systems.

2017 The Reorganization of Human Brain Networks Modulated by Driving Mental Fatigue
abstract
The organization of the brain functional network is associated with mental fatigue, but little is known about the brain network topology that is modulated by the mental fatigue. In this study, we used the graph theory approach to investigate reconfiguration changes in functional networks of different electroen-cephalography (EEG) bands from 16 subjects performing a simulated driving task. Behavior and brain functional networks were compared between the normal and driving mental fatigue states. The scores of subjective self-reports indicated that 90 min of simulated driving-induced mental fatigue. We observed that coherence was significantly increased in the frontal, central, and temporal brain regions. Furthermore, in the brain network topology metric, significant increases were observed in the clustering coefficient (Cp) for beta, alpha, and delta bands and the character path length (Lp) for all EEG bands. The normalized measures γ showed significant increases in beta, alpha, and delta bands, and λ showed similar patterns in beta and theta bands. These results indicate that functional network topology can shift the network topology structure toward a more economic but less efficient configuration, which suggests low wiring costs in functional networks and disruption of the effective interactions between and across cortical regions during mental fatigue states. Graph theory analysis might be a useful tool for further understanding the neural mechanisms of driving mental fatigue.
