| 2023 | Successive Cancellation Integer Forcing via Practical Binary CodesabstractA new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver scheme for practical binary codes is proposed that provides consistent gains over conventional linear receivers. We first develop a practical successive integer forcing (IF) scheme based on practical binary codes rather than lattice codes. We then present the successive cancellation integer forcing (SC-IF) scheme, which combines and enhances successive IF and minimum mean squared error successive interference cancellation (MMSE-SIC). In this scheme, the receiver first decides whether individual decoding or IF sum decoding is appropriate for each data stream, and then conducts successive IF sum decoding only for selected streams while decoding the remaining streams using MMSE-SIC. The proposed SC-IF methodology mitigates the performance loss caused by mismatched IF filtering in fading channels, while attenuating the noise amplification caused by MMSE filtering. Extensive link-level simulations demonstrate that the proposed successive IF significantly improves the basic IF, and the SC-IF improves both the successive IF and MMSE-SIC, offering uniform improvements over conventional linear receivers for most channel correlation and variation parameters and modulation orders at comparable computational costs. These results illustrate the viability of SC-IF as a fundamental building block for high-performance MIMO receivers in 5G-Advanced and/or subsequent-generation communication systems. | 2019 | Puncturing and Shortening for Polar Codes via the Partial Order by Binary DominationabstractIn this paper, we investigate the fundamentals of puncturing and shortening for polar codes, based on binary domination which plays a key role in polar code construction. We first prove that the orders of encoder input bits to be made incapable (by puncturing) or to be shortened are governed by binary domination. In particular, we show that binary domination completely determines incapable or shortened bit patterns for polar codes, and that all the possible incapable or shortened bit patterns can be identified. We then present the patterns of the corresponding encoder output bits to be punctured or fixed, when the incapable or shortened bits are given. | 2019 | Rate Matching for Polar Codes Based on Binary DominationabstractIn this paper, we investigate the fundamentals of puncturing and shortening for polar codes, based on binary domination. For punctured and shortened polar codes, we prove that the partial order by binary domination completely determines both incapable bit patterns (by puncturing) and fixed bit patterns (by shortening). In particular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for an encoder output bit to be fixed by additionally shortening a single encoder input bit, as well as a necessary and sufficient condition for an encoder input bit to be made incapable by additionally puncturing a single encoder output bit. We also identify all the puncturing bit patterns yielding a given incapable bit pattern. These results provide a guidance to design a practical rate-matching scheme for polar codes. As an example, we present a rate-matching scheme based on our analytical observations. Numerical results show that it performs well over a wide range of code lengths and rates, compared with conventional rate-matching schemes. | 2019 | Spatially Modulated Integer-Forcing Transceivers With Practical Binary CodesabstractA new practical multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transceiver technique calledspatially modulated integer-forcing(SM-IF) is proposed for hybrid beamforming array systems, which combines generalized spatial modulation (GSM) with integer-forcing (IF) MIMO multiplexing transmission to achieve improved spectral efficiency with low system complexity. In the proposed scheme, the transmitter first activates a subset of antennas using analog beamforming and delivers an SM information stream via the index of the activated antenna group. Then MIMO digital multiplexing is applied to send multiple MIMO information streams via multilevel coding (MLC) with binary channel codes through the activated antennas. At the receiver side, the receiver first estimates the index of the activated antenna group to recover the SM stream and then recovers the MIMO streams by IF sum decoding in conjunction with multi-stage decoding. The proposed scheme provides a unified coding framework to achieve a synergistic gain by integrating off-the-shelf practical binary codes and low complexity IF decoding into hybrid beamforming array systems. By extensive link-level numerical simulations, the proposed scheme is shown to outperform both the conventional plain IF MIMO and plain SM approaches. The results demonstrate that the proposed SM-IF can be a promising transceiver technique implementable in practical hybrid beamforming array systems. Sung Ho Chae, Sang-Woon Jeon, Seok-Ki Ahn |

| 2017 | Integer-Forcing Receiver with Practical Binary Codes and Its Performance AnalysisabstractA new practical coding scheme for integer- forcing (IF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)systems is proposed. In order to utilize practical binary codes for IF, the proposed scheme is based on multilevel coding, in which multilevel encoding composed of binary linear codes is employed at the transmitter and multistage decoding suitably adapted to the IF operation is employed at the receiver. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated both analytically and numerically, showing that the gain of IF over conventional receivers is indeed achievable with practical binary codes. Specifically, it is shown that the proposed IF receiver can significantly outperform conventional linear receivers especially when the channel correlation is severe and/or target spectral efficiency is high. | 2017 | Multilevel Coding Scheme for Integer-Forcing MIMO Receivers With Binary CodesabstractAn integer-forcing (IF) linear multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver has recently been proposed, which is theoretically shown to achieve near capacity with almost the same complexity as that of conventional linear receivers. The key idea is that the receiver attempts to directly decode integer-linear combinations of codewords. To ensure that this sum-decoding operation is feasible, in previous works, lattice codes over$\mathbb {Z}_{q}$were employed. Although those codes can attain good theoretical performance, however, its implementation complexity can be considerably high in practice, especially when$q$is large to support high-order modulations. In this paper, we propose a practical multilevel coding scheme for IF MIMO, in which multilevel encoding composed of binary linear codes$(q = 2)$in conjunction with the natural mapping is employed on the transmitter side and multistage decoding adapted to the IF operation is employed on the receiver side. The performance of the proposed scheme is extensively evaluated both analytically and numerically, showing that the gain of IF over conventional receivers is indeed achievable in practical settings with almost the same complexity. Our results imply that the proposed IF MIMO can be an attractive solution for the 5G communications due to its ability of supporting high spectral efficiency with low complexity. | 2015 | Adaptive Sliding-Window Coded Modulation in Cellular NetworksabstractThe sliding-window superposition coding scheme aims to mitigate intercell interference at the physical layer by achieving the simultaneous decoding performance with point-to-point channel codes, low- complexity decoding, and minimal coordination overhead. The associated sliding-window coded modulation (SWCM) scheme can be readily implemented using standard off-the-shelf codes, such as the standard LTE turbo code, and tracks the information-theoretical performance guarantee of sliding-window superposition coding. This paper investigates how the basic SWCM scheme performs for the Ped-B fading interference channel model and proposes several improvements in transceiver design, such as soft decoding, input bit-mapping and layer optimization, and power control. Our enhanced SWCM scheme achieves the rates higher than those of the basic SWCM scheme by 10% to 20%, which already shows a significant gain over existing schemes that ignore modulation or coding information of interfering signals. This result confirms the potential of SWCM as a basic building block for physical-layer interference management in 5G and subsequent generations of cellular networks. | 2013 | Evaluation of the Low Error-Rate Performance of LDPC Codes over Rayleigh Fading Channels Using Importance SamplingabstractIn this paper we propose a novel importance sampling (IS) scheme to estimate the low error-rate performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed scheme exploits the structural weakness of LDPC codes due to trapping sets (TSs). The Rayleigh fading distribution on the bits belonging to a TS is biased by parameter scaling (PS), while the noise distribution on them is biased via mean translation (MT) according to their fading coefficients. The biases in PS and MT are determined so that the variance of the proposed IS estimator is minimized. The proposed IS scheme is compared with the Monte Carlo (MC) simulator and other IS schemes modified from the conventional IS scheme employed for performance estimation of LDPC codes over an AWGN channel. Numerical results show that it provides much more accurate performance than other IS schemes. Furthermore, the proposed IS estimator is even more efficient than the MC estimator and other IS estimators from the viewpoint of the number of required simulation runs. | 2010 | Adaptive Modulation and Coding Schemes Based on LDPC Codes with Irregular ModulationabstractIn this paper we propose an adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme which uses only a single low-density parity-check (LDPC) encoder/decoder with irregular modulation. Two Gray-mapped quadrature-amplitude modulations are employed within a codeword so that the transmission rates of the proposed AMC can be controlled even though the rate of the employed LDPC code is fixed. The rate and degree distribution of the employed LDPC code are selected properly for the proposed scheme. We also optimize the bit-to-symbol mapping for the LDPC code over irregular modulation at each transmission rate. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared with that of the AMC scheme with a dedicated LDPC code at each transmission rate. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme has a performance comparable to that of the AMC scheme with dedicated LDPC codes. Seok-Ki Ahn, Kyeongcheol Yang |
