| 2021 | A Multi-UAV System for Detection and Elimination of Multiple TargetsabstractThe problem of safe interception of multiple intruder UAVs by a team of cooperating autonomous aerial vehicles is addressed in this paper. The presented work is motivated by the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) 2020 where this task was simplified to an interaction with a set of static and dynamic objects (balloons and a UAV), and by a real autonomous aerial interception system of Eagle. One that our team has been working on. We propose a general control, perception, and coordination system for the fast and reliable interception of targets in a 3D environment relying only on onboard sensors and processing. The proposed methods and the entire complex multi-robot system were successfully verified in demanding desert conditions, with the main focus on reliability and fast deployment. In the MBZIRC competition, the proposed approach exhibited the greatest reliability and fastest solution. It was crucial to our team in winning the entire competition and achieving the second place in the intruder UAV interception scenario. | 2017 | Modeling Player Activity in a Physical Interactive Robot Game ScenarioabstractWe propose a quantitative human player model for Physically Interactive RoboGames that can account for the combination of the player activity (physical effort) and interaction level. The model is based on activity recognition and a description of the player interaction (proximity and body contraction index) with the robot co-player. Our approach has been tested on a dataset collected from a real, physical robot game, where activity patterns extracted by a custom 3-axis accelerometer sensor module and by the Microsoft Kinect sensor are used. The proposed model design aims at inspiring approaches that can consider the activity of a human player in lively games against robots and foster the design of robotic adaptive behavior capable of supporting her/his engagement in such type of games. | 2013 | Perception-driven multi-robot formation controlabstractMaximizing the performance of cooperative perception of a tracked target by a team of mobile robots while maintaining the team's formation is the core problem addressed in this work. We propose a solution by integrating the controller and the estimator modules in a formation control loop. The controller module is a distributed non-linear model predictive controller and the estimator module is based on a particle filter for cooperative target tracking. A formal description of the integration followed by simulation and real robot results on two different teams of homogeneous robots are presented. The results highlight how our method successfully enables a team of homogeneous robots to minimize the total uncertainty of the tracked target's cooperative estimate while complying with the performance criteria such as keeping a pre-set distance between the team-mates and/or the target and obstacle avoidance.
