1986 Interframe Predictive Coding of Images Using Hybrid Vector Quantization
abstract
The temporal and spatial redundancies of image sequences can be reduced by prediction and vector quantization, respectively. The robustness of the coder is increased through the use of a hybrid two-stage vector quantizer. The first stage is of the Linde-Buzo-Gray type. The second stage encodes the residual error of the first stage using a lattice vector quantizer.

1986 Lattice quantizers: Entropy reduction by proper tie-handling
abstract
The entropy of a lattice quantizer can be lowered by breaking ties in rounding off in favor of the closest lattice point of highest probability. For a differential pulse-code modulation (DPCM) signal, this means rounding off toward the component of smallest norm. This variant of the algorithm of Conway and Sloane reduces entropy without sacrificing mean-square error.
