2026 Temporal diffuser: Timing scale-aware modulation for sign language production
abstract
Recent advances in Sign Language Production (SLP) highlight denoising diffusion models as promising alternatives to traditional autoregressive methods. Most existing approaches follow a two-stage pipeline that encodes sign motion into discrete latent codes, often sacrificing Space–Time fidelity and requiring gloss annotations or complex codebooks. Transformer-based models aim to simplify this, but often produce overly smooth, unnatural motions. We introduce Sign Language Production with Scale-Aware Modulation (SignSAM), a novel single-stage, gloss-free SLP framework that directly synthesizes motion in continuous space, preserving fine temporal details. At its core is a Space–Time U-Net that learns compact temporal features by jointly downscaling the frame and sign feature dimensions, thereby reducing computational cost compared to a no-pyramid UNet or a pyramid UNet without consistency between dimensions. To further enhance temporal precision, we propose a Timing Scale-Aware Modulation module that fuses multiscale temporal resolutions for better motion coherence. Experiments on PHOENIX14T and How2Sign show that SignSAM achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) fluency, accuracy, and naturalness, offering an efficient and expressive solution for SLP. 2026 U-Net Encapsulated Transformer for Reducing Dimensionality in Training Large Language Models
abstract
Training language models from scratch presents a critical challenge in Natural Language Processing (NLP), primarily due to the computational demands of pre-trained Large Language Models, which are predominantly trained on English corpora using extensive resources. While offering viable solutions, existing alternatives still rely heavily on high-performance hardware. This work introduces a different approach to reducing the algorithmic complexity of Transformer-based architectures through the U-Net Encapsulated Transformer (UET), which applies dimensionality reduction to token embeddings. The UET architecture enables the development of language models with significantly reduced parameter sizes for a given set of hyperparameters. Alternatively, it allows researchers to design models of comparable size but with a substantially greater number of Transformer blocks, enhancing model depth and potential capacity. This study also outlines practical methodologies for training language models in resource-constrained environments. Experimental results illustrate the potential of the UET architecture in achieving reasonable performance under resource-constrained conditions, highlighting its promise as an accessible alternative for language model development. This work could broaden the accessibility of NLP research, empowering researchers with hardware constraints to contribute to language model development.

2025 Autonomous Drone Navigation through Vertical Obstacles with Novel Reward Function and Temporal Shift Architecture
abstract
Drones are increasingly utilized in diverse domains such as surveillance, rescue, delivery, and data collection, where autonomous navigation with reliable obstacle avoidance is critical. While deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has shown promise in addressing this challenge, existing models often struggle with enabling effective vertical maneuverability. This paper presents a novel reward function tailored to enhance three-dimensional (3D) navigation in drone systems, addressing this key limitation. Our approach integrates this reward function within a Double Deep Q-Network (D3QN) framework, augmented by a temporal shift technique to model temporal dependencies between observations and a soft update mechanism to improve training stability and convergence speed. The system is evaluated in both simulated and real-world environments using a Parrot Bebop 2.0 drone and an off-board ROS-based computing platform. Real-world tests conducted in indoor corridors with varied static and low-lying obstacles demonstrate that the proposed approach enables safe and efficient 3D navigation, outperforming a baseline reward function in terms of collision avoidance and learning efficiency.

2025 HSTforU: anomaly detection in aerial and ground-based videos with hierarchical spatio-temporal transformer for U-net
abstract
Anomaly detection is to identify abnormal events against normal ones within surveillance videos mainly collected in ground-based settings. Recently, the demand for processing drone-collected data is rapidly growing with the expanding range of drone applications. However, as most aerial videos collected by flying drones contain dynamic backgrounds and others, it is necessary to deal with their spatio-temporal features in detecting anomalies. This study presents a transformer-based video anomaly detection method whereby we investigate a challenging aerial dataset and three benchmark ground-based datasets. A multi-stage transformer is leveraged as an encoder to generate multi-scale feature maps, which are then conveyed to a hierarchical spatio-temporal transformer, that is linked to a decoder and used to capture spatial and temporal information by utilizing a joint attention mechanism. Extensive evaluations including several ablation studies suggest that this network outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. We expect the proposed transformer for U-net can find diverse applications in the video processing area. Code and pre-trained models are publicly available at https://github.com/vt-le/HSTforU .

2025 Instruction-Driven 3D Facial Expression Generation and Transition
abstract
A 3D avatar typically has one of six cardinal facial expressions. To simulate realistic emotional variation, we should be able to render a facial transition between two arbitrary expressions. This study presents a new framework for instruction-driven facial expression generation that produces a 3D face and, starting from an image of the face, transforms the facial expression from one designated facial expression to another. The Instruction-driven Facial Expression Decomposer (IFED) module is introduced to facilitate multimodal data learning and capture the correlation between textual descriptions and facial expression features. Subsequently, we propose the Instruction to Facial Expression Transition (I2FET) method, which leverages IFED and a vertex reconstruction loss function to refine the semantic comprehension of latent vectors, thus generating a facial expression sequence according to the given instruction. Lastly, we present the Facial Expression Transition model to generate smooth transitions between facial expressions. Extensive evaluation suggests that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the CK+ and CelebV-HQ datasets. The results show that our framework can generate facial expression trajectories according to text instruction. Considering that text prompts allow us to make diverse descriptions of human emotional states, the repertoire of facial expressions and the transitions between them can be expanded greatly. We expect our framework to find various practical applications. More information about our project can be found athttps://vohoanganh.github.io/tg3dfet/

2024 UET4Rec: U-net encapsulated transformer for sequential recommender
abstract
Recommending a tempting sequence of items according to a user’s previous history of purchases and clicks, for instance, in the online shopping portals is challenging. And yet it is a crucial task for all service providers. One of the core components in the recommender systems is a sequential model with which an input sequence is transformed into the predicted items. Among many, deep neural networks, such as RNN, LSTM, and Transformer, have been favored for this purpose. However, improving the performance of these models remains an important task. To address this, we propose a novel sequential model by combining a U-net and Transformer, called U-net Encapsulated Transformer. This hybrid architecture places a transformer model between a convolutional encoder and its decoder, wherein each convolutional layer processes 1D signal, i.e. text. The primary benefit of this structure is that the computational burden is reduced since the embedding size of the input to the Transformer is drastically decreased as the signal has to go through the multi-layer convolutional encoder. This solution leverages recommendation lists for action predictions and uses user feedback as direct rewards for updating the model. In addition, the loss function mechanism is improved by including contrastive and reinforcement learning losses. Evaluation of the proposed model, including extensive ablation study, is carried out on four standard benchmark datasets, such as RC15, RetailRocket, MovieLens-1M, and Amazon-Beauty, demonstrating superior performance compared to state-of-the-art methods.

2023 Attention-based residual autoencoder for video anomaly detection
abstract
Abstract Automatic anomaly detection is a crucial task in video surveillance system intensively used for public safety and others. The present system adopts a spatial branch and a temporal branch in a unified network that exploits both spatial and temporal information effectively. The network has a residual autoencoder architecture, consisting of a deep convolutional neural network-based encoder and a multi-stage channel attention-based decoder, trained in an unsupervised manner. The temporal shift method is used for exploiting the temporal feature, whereas the contextual dependency is extracted by channel attention modules. System performance is evaluated using three standard benchmark datasets. Result suggests that our network outperforms the state-of-the-art methods, achieving 97.4% for UCSD Ped2, 86.7% for CUHK Avenue, and 73.6% for ShanghaiTech dataset in term of Area Under Curve, respectively.

2023 Coarse-to-fine fusion for language grounding in 3D navigation
abstract
We present a new network whereby an agent navigates in the 3D environment to find a target object according to a language-based instruction. Such a task is challenging because the agent has to understand the instruction correctly and takes a series of actions to locate a target among others without colliding with obstacles. The essence of our proposed network consists of a coarse-to-fine fusion model to fuse language and vision and an autoencoder to encode visual information effectively. Then, an asynchronous reinforcement learning algorithm is used to coordinate detailed actions to complete the navigation task. Extensive evaluation using three different levels of the navigation task in the 3D Vizdoom environment suggests that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art. To see if the proposed network can deal with a real-world 3D environment for the navigation task, it is combined with Rec-BERT, which is based on REVERIE. The result suggests that it performs better, especially for unseen cases, and it is also useful to visualize what and when the agent pays attention to while it navigates in a complex indoor environment.

2022 Weighted statistical binary patterns for facial feature representation
abstract
Abstract We present a novel framework for efficient and robust facial feature representation based upon Local Binary Pattern (LBP), called Weighted Statistical Binary Pattern, wherein the descriptors utilize the straight-line topology along with different directions. The input image is initially divided into mean and variance moments. A new variance moment, which contains distinctive facial features, is prepared by extracting rootk-th. Then, when Sign and Magnitude components along four different directions using the mean moment are constructed, a weighting approach according to the new variance is applied to each component. Finally, the weighted histograms of Sign and Magnitude components are concatenated to build a novel histogram of Complementary LBP along with different directions. A comprehensive evaluation using six public face datasets suggests that the present framework outperforms the state-of-the-art methods and achieves 98.51% for ORL, 98.72% for YALE, 98.83% for Caltech, 99.52% for AR, 94.78% for FERET, and 99.07% for KDEF in terms of accuracy, respectively. The influence of color spaces and the issue of degraded images are also analyzed with our descriptors. Such a result with theoretical underpinning confirms that our descriptors are robust against noise, illumination variation, diverse facial expressions, and head poses.

2022 Reflection symmetry detection of shapes based on shape signatures
abstract
We present two novel shape signature-based reflection symmetry detection methods with their theoretical underpinning and empirical evaluation. LIP-signature and R-signature share similar beneficial properties allowing to detect reflection symmetry directions in a high-performing manner. For the shape signature of a given shape, its merit profile is constructed to detect candidates of symmetry direction. A verification process is utilized to eliminate the false candidates by addressing Radon projections. The proposed methods can effectively deal with compound shapes which are challenging for traditional contour-based methods. To quantify the symmetric efficiency, a new symmetry measure is proposed over the range [0, 1]. Furthermore, we introduce two symmetry shape datasets with a new evaluation protocol and a lost measure for evaluating symmetry detectors. Experimental results using standard and new datasets suggest that the proposed methods prominently perform compared to state of the art.

2019 Automatic Drone Navigation in Realistic 3D Landscapes using Deep Reinforcement Learning
abstract
We present a study where a drone navigates through diverse 3D obstacles by finding a 3D path and reaches the goal using deep reinforcement learning (RL) in a 3D realistic landscape. The drone has two inputs: first RGB provides a first person view of the landscape and secondly depth map gives it 3D information of the environment. For training the drone for automatic navigation, deep reinforcement learning is extensively used. For the same task, human pilot navigates through the obstacles with a radio controller (RC) using a hardware-in-the-loop setup. Racing performance between human and several deep RL algorithms such as Deep Q-Network (DQN), Double DQN, Dueling DQN and Double Dueling DQN (DD-DQN) are evaluated. Results suggest that DD-DQN outperforms other algorithms and, for the racing between humans and algorithms, DD-DQN performs better than a novice and yet an expert or intermediate-level pilot outperforms any other algorithms. The present study demonstrates that time and resource for training a drone can be saved using a realistic and yet controllable platform.
