| 2025 | A 4.8dB NF, 3-to-119GHz Distributed LNA With Three-Turn Transformer and Multiple Magnetic Coupling Feedback Network in 28nm CMOSabstractThis paper proposes a three-stage wideband distributed low-noise amplifier (LNA) with cascode unit cells. A three-turn transformer (3-TT) is introduced to optimize the noise contribution of the common-source transistor. A multiple magnetic coupling feedback network (MMCFN) with inductive peaking technique is employed to improve the gain and noise figure (NF) at high frequency. An RC-parallel terminal circuit (TC) is proposed to replace the input matching resistor, which suppress the noise contribution of the TC. Implemented in a 28nm CMOS process, the proposed distributed amplifier achieves a peak small-signal gain of 15.3dB with a wide −3dB bandwidth across 3 to 119GHz. A GBW of 675GHz is obtained. The NF is from 4.8 to 9dB within the −3dB bandwidth. The circuit consumes a current of 65mA from a supply of 1.9V and 1.6V with a core chip area of 0.37mm2. Jincheng Zhang 0002, Junyan Ren |

| 2025 | An Effective Digital Calibration Method Based on Volterra Neural Network for Pipeline ADCsabstractThis paper presents an effective digital calibration method based on Volterra neural network (VNN) for pipeline analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Typically, the nonideality of pipelined ADCs results in dynamic nonlinear systems that are difficult to comprehensively calibrate. The proposed approach combines the strong nonlinear modeling capabilities of Volterra series with the adaptability of neural networks to accurately compensate for nonlinear distortions in pipeline ADCs. The effectiveness of VNN-based calibration is verified in MATLAB and ZYNQ-7000 FPGA. A 625-MS/s 12-bit pipeline ADC in 28 nm CMOS process is presented to verify the proposed calibration technique. The experimental results show that owing to the proposed powerful calibrator, the SFDR and SNDR achieve 79.8 dB and 60.7 dB at low frequencies, 74.3 dB and 59.1 dB at high frequencies, respectively. | 2025 | A Harmonic-Suppressed GaN Power Amplifier Using Artificial Coupled ResonatorabstractThis brief presents an 11.5–17.5-GHz power amplifier (PA) with 32-dBm output power in a 0.25-$\mu $m gallium nitride (GaN) process. Capacitively and inductively coupled resonators are used for impedance matching to achieve a flat in-band power gain and a high out-of-band rejection. Meanwhile, the output matching network provides a second-harmonic suppression to improve the average efficiency within the bandwidth of the PA. The measurements show that the proposed PA exhibits an output power of 31–32.5 dBm and a power gain of more than 10.5 dB from 11.5 to 17.5 GHz. Due to the matching networks providing convenient dc feed and dc block, the chip dimension is only$2.1\times 1.1$mm2, corresponding to a power density of 0.77 W/mm2. The proposed PA demonstrates a competitive fractional bandwidth and power density in GaN PA monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs). | 2025 | A Comprehensive Digital Calibration for Pipelined ADCs Using Cascaded Nonlinearity CorrectionabstractThis brief presents a digital calibration for pipelined analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) utilizing the cascaded nonlinearity correction (CNC) method. By cascading three correction layers for compensating nonlinearities in different parts of pipelined ADC, it comprehensively calibrates distortion in both ADC front end and back end with a low hardware cost. In addition, this work employs a discriminative fine-tuning least-mean-square (DFT-LMS) algorithm with varying step sizes for different layers, thereby improving both the convergence speed and the accuracy. An 800-MS/s, 12-bit ring amplifier-based pipelined ADC is presented to verify the proposed calibration technique. With calibration, the SFDR has a 26.7-dB improvement at low frequency and 23.6-dB improvement at Nyquist frequency, resulting in over 6-dB improvement compared with prior-art calibration techniques. The calibration algorithm has been verified on a TSMC 28-nm CMOS process. The experimental results show that the proposed ADC calibrator has an area of$6592~\mu $m2 and consumes 5.31 mW at 800-MHz clock rate. | 2023 | A 400-MS/s 12-bit Voltage-Time Hybrid ADC with a Ping-Pong SAR TDC for Speed EnhancementabstractThis paper presents a 400-MS/s 12-bit voltage-time hybrid pipeline ADC in a 28 nm CMOS process. The first stage is an asynchronous SAR ADC resolving 6 bits, and the second stage is a time-domain ADC composed of a VTC and a 7-bit SAR TDC (with 1-bit redundancy). To speed up the time domain operation, a ping-pong switching technique is used in the second stage. Besides, a common mode VTC is adopted to improve the linearity during the voltage-to-time conversion. A non-binary SAR TDC is also designed to tolerate the MSBs decision errors in the time-domain quantization. Furthermore, a LMS-based background calibration is performed to correct the capacitor mismatch error, interstage gain error, and bit-weight in the SAR TDC. The simulation results show that this design achieves a SNDR of 63.3 dB and a SFDR of 79.1 dB at Nyquist input. The power consumption is 9.6 mW with a supply of 0.9V, showing a FoM of 20.1 fJ/conversion-step. Yuguo Xiang, Fan Ye 0001, Junyan Ren |

| 2023 | 28-nm CMOS Ultrasound AFE With Split Attenuation for Optimizing Gain-Range, Noise, and AreaabstractThis paper presents split attenuators combined with adjustable gain amplifiers as a two-stage time-gain compensation (TGC), such that it can extend the gain range of the Analog Front-end (AFE) for ultrasound image systems. To avoid artifacts caused by discrete gain control, continuous dB-linear gain varying with time is achieved by the split two-stage resistive voltage-divider attenuator whose attenuation value is decided by the MOSFET resistance which is inversely proportional to area. Rigorous theoretical analysis proves that placing the attenuators in the front and back stages of a programmable-gain amplifier (PGA) in the AFE as the proposed architecture demonstrated solves the contradiction between extending the gain range and saving area. The total attenuation range is broken down into two stages so that the system noise performance is optimized and unlike the prior single-stage-attenuator work, the dB-linearity is free from the negative impact of parasitic resistance introduced by area expansion. The proposed AFE has been fabricated by a 28-nm CMOS process, occupying 0.145 mm2 active area and consuming 75mW from a 2.5 V supply. It achieves a 74.7 dB adjustable gain range while providing a 15 MHz/30 MHz switchable bandwidth for all gain modes. The lowest input-referred noise (IRN) of the system was measured as 2.38 nV/$\sqrt {\mathrm {Hz}}$at 5MHz with the TGC reaching the highest gain. | 2022 | High-Speed and Time-Interleaved ADCs Using Additive-Neural-Network-Based Calibration for Nonlinear Amplitude and Phase DistortionabstractThis paper presents a neural network-based digital calibration algorithm for high-speed and time-interleaved (TI) ADCs. In contrast with prior methods, the proposed work features joint amplitude-dependent and phase-dependent nonlinear distortion correction without prior-knowledge of ADC architecture feature. A dynamic calibration is first used to compensate for phase-dependent distortion. Two training optimizations, including a sub-range-sample-based batch schemes and a recursive foreground co-calibration flow are proposed to reduce the error and overfitting and further save hardware resources. A practical calibration engine is also investigated for interleaved ADCs with distributed weight and shared weight methods. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, the calibration engine is verified by two fabricated ADC prototypes, a 5 GS/s 16-way interleaved ADC and a 625 MS/s interleaving-SAR assisted pipeline ADC. Measurement results show that SFDR is improved between 16.9dB and 36.4dB before and after calibration for different frequency inputs. To trade-off between accuracy and power consumption, a quantized and pruned engine is implemented on both FPGA and 28nm CMOS technology. Experimental results show that the dedicated calibration on silicon consumes 8.64mW with 0.9V power supply at 333MHz clock rate. | 2021 | A Partially Binarized and Fixed Neural Network Based Calibrator for SAR-Pipelined ADCs Achieving 95.0-dB SFDRabstractRecently, the neural network has been applied to calibrate the successive-approximation-register and pipelined analog-to-digital converters (SAR-Pipelined ADCs), which requires no prior knowledge. However, the large hardware area of the full-precision neural network (FPNN) limits the promotion of this method. This paper proposes an optimization scheme called partially binarized and fixed neural network (PBFNN) to simplify the hardware through the following mechanisms. First, the multipliers that occupy a considerable area are optimized by binarization. Second, the fixed layer does not require training, hence saving the hardware for backpropagation. A 14-bit 60 MS/s ADC prototyped in 28-nm CMOS process is used to verify the PBFNN-based calibration. The measurement results show that the ADC achieves an SFDR of 95.0 dB and an ENOB of 10.6 bit. Compared with the previous scheme, the SFDR and ENOB are lossless. We also synthesize both schemes in Synopsys Design Compiler with a 28-nm library. The synthesis result indicates that the hardware area is optimized by 71.95%. Min Chen 0036, Fan Ye 0001, Junyan Ren |

| 2021 | A 91.0-dB SFDR Single-Coarse Dual-Fine Pipelined-SAR ADC With Split-Based Background Calibration in 28-nm CMOSabstractThis paper presents a single-coarse dual-fine architecture that improves energy-efficiency of pipelined-SAR analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). A coarse and fast sub-ADC is used to quantize the most significant bits (MSBs), which are encoded with a proposed residue transformation method to control the residue generation of the first stages in two fine channels. The residue voltages generate on the capacitive digital-to-analog converters (C-DACs) of split fine channels directly without successive approximation processes. Therefore, the conversion rate is increased and the power is reduced. A shuffle mechanism is introduced into split-ADC based digital background calibration to avoid the divergence of the conventional algorithm in the proposed architecture. A high-energy-efficiency dynamic amplifier is also introduced as the residue amplifier. A 14-bit 60-MS/s ADC is prototyped in a 28-nm CMOS process. The digital calibration engine operates under 0.9-V supply, other parts of the ADC core operate under 1.05-V supply. The ADC core consumes 4.26 mW. Measurement results show that the calibration improved the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) and spur-free dynamic range (SFDR) dramatically, the calibrated ADC achieves SNDR and SFDR of 66.9 dB and of 91.0 dB respectively, translating to a Schreier FoM of 165.4 dB and a Walden FoM of 39.3 fJ/conversion-step. | 2015 | Greedy approach based heuristics for partitioning SpMxV on FPGAsabstractTo eliminate the overhead of zero padding in sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMxV), prior works have been focusing on partitioning a sparse matrix into row vectors sets (RVS's) or sub-matrices. Nevertheless, performance degraded still due to the sparsity pattern of a sparse matrix. In this paper, we propose a heuristics, called recursive merging, which uses greedy approach to recursively merge those row vectors of nonzeros in a matrix into the RVS's, such that each set included is ensured a local optimal solution. For ten uneven benchmark matrices from the University of Florida Sparse Matrix Collection, our proposed partitioning algorithm is always identified as the method with the highest mean density (over 96%). An average speedup of 249X is thus achieved for all these ten matrices when 32 processors are allocated for implementation SpMxV on XC7V485T FPGAs. Jiasen Huang, Weina Lu, Junyan Ren |

The ODDC technique has the advantages of significant improvement on the dynamic performance in a wide frequency range without increasing the noise floor. ODDC can eliminate the switching time variations caused by output voltage of DAC through tuning the bulk voltage of switches in the deep N-well. The algorithm of ODDC technique is derived. To verify the implementation, a 14 bits 400MS/s current-steering DAC with ODDC is simulated and the SFDR can be improved by about 12dB with proper circuit parameters. | 2012 | A time-to-digital converter based AFC for wideband frequency synthesizerabstractThe automatic frequency calibration (AFC) technique is routinely used in the wideband frequency synthesizers which contain multiple voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) tuning curves. In this paper, a counter-based AFC design method is presented. The relationship between the AFC counting time and the VCO tuning curve characteristic is quantitatively analyzed. An AFC circuit which uses a time-to-digital converter (TDC) in the counting process is developed. Simulation results show that the proposed circuit significantly reduces the AFC calibration time while preserving the calibration accuracy. The simulated error-free AFC time of the proposed AFC is less than 3 µs. Deping Huang, Wei Li 0038, Jin Zhou 0001, Ning Li 0007, Junyan Ren, Jinghong Chen |

| 2012 | A Fast Non-Monte-Carlo Yield Analysis and Optimization by Stochastic Orthogonal PolynomialsabstractPerformance failure has become a significant threat to the reliability and robustness of analog circuits. In this article, we first develop an efficient non-Monte-Carlo (NMC) transient mismatch analysis, where transient response is represented by stochastic orthogonal polynomial (SOP) expansion under PVT variations and probabilistic distribution of transient response is solved. We further define performance yield and derive stochastic sensitivity for yield within the framework of SOP, and finally develop a gradient-based multiobjective optimization to improve yield while satisfying other performance constraints. Extensive experiments show that compared to Monte Carlo-based yield estimation, our NMC method achieves up to 700 X speedup and maintains 98% accuracy. Furthermore, multiobjective optimization not only improves yield by up to 95.3% with performance constraints, it also provides better efficiency than other existing methods. | 2011 | Nyquist-rate time-interleaved current-steering DAC with dynamic channel matchingabstractA Nyquist-rate time-interleaved current-steering digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with dynamic channel matching (DCM) is proposed. Thanks to the proposed Nyquist- rate time-interleaved architecture, the DAC can properly operate at more than lGS/s for a near-Nyquist output signal. The key limitation of the time-interleaved architecture is the mismatches between channels. The proposed DCM method can be applied to significantly suppress the spurious tones caused by imperfect channel matching. A 14-bit 1 GS/s current-steering DAC with behavior models and a 0.18μm CMOS technology is simulated to illustrate the wideband time-interleaved architecture and the harmonic elimination of the DCM. | 2010 | QuickYield: an efficient global-search based parametric yield estimation with performance constraintsabstractWith technology scaling down to 90nm and below, many yield-driven design and optimization methodologies have been proposed to cope with the prominent process variation and to increase the yield. A critical issue that affects the efficiency of those methods is to estimate the yield when given design parameters under variations. Existing methods either use Monte Carlo method in performance domain where thousands of simulations are required, or use local search in parameter domain where a number of simulations are required to characterize the point on the yield boundary defined by performance constraints. To improve efficiency, in this paper we propose QuickYield, a yield surface boundary determination by surface-point finding and global-search. Experiments on a number of different circuits show that for the same accuracy, QuickYield is up to 519X faster compared with the Monte Carlo approach, and up to 4.7X faster compared with YENSS, the fastest approach reported in literature. | 2007 | A High-Speed High-Resolution Low-Distortion CMOS Bootstrapped SwitchabstractThis paper presents a low-voltage and low-distortion CMOS bootstrapped switch that adopts a new technique to improve the accuracy of sample-and-hold (S/H) circuits.
