| 2025 | Subspace Recovery in Winsorized PCA: Insights into Accuracy and RobustnessabstractIn this paper, we explore the theoretical properties of subspace recovery using Winsorized Principal Component Analysis (WPCA), utilizing a common data transformation technique that caps extreme values to mitigate the impact of outliers. Despite the widespread use of winsorization in various tasks of multivariate analysis, its theoretical properties, particularly for subspace recovery, have received limited attention. We provide a detailed analysis of the accuracy of WPCA, showing that increasing the number of samples while decreasing the proportion of outliers guarantees the consistency of the sample subspaces from WPCA with respect to the true population subspace. Furthermore, we establish perturbation bounds that ensure the WPCA subspace obtained from contaminated data remains close to the subspace recovered from pure data. Additionally, we extend the classical notion of breakdown points to subspace-valued statistics and derive lower bounds for the breakdown points of WPCA. Our analysis demonstrates that WPCA exhibits strong robustness to outliers while maintaining consistency under mild assumptions. A toy example is provided to numerically illustrate the behavior of the upper bounds for perturbation bounds and breakdown points, emphasizing winsorization’s utility in subspace recovery. | 2024 | Robust SVD Made Easy: A fast and reliable algorithm for large-scale data analysisabstractThe singular value decomposition (SVD) is a crucial tool in machine learning and statistical data analysis. However, it is highly susceptible to outliers in the data matrix. Existing robust SVD algorithms often sacrifice speed for robustness or fail in the presence of only a few outliers. This study introduces an efficient algorithm, called Spherically Normalized SVD, for robust SVD approximation that is highly insensitive to outliers, computationally scalable, and provides accurate approximations of singular vectors. The proposed algorithm achieves remarkable speed by utilizing only two applications of a standard reduced-rank SVD algorithm to appropriately scaled data, significantly outperforming competing algorithms in computation times. To assess the robustness of the approximated singular vectors and their subspaces against data contamination, we introduce new notions of breakdown points for matrix-valued input, including row-wise, column-wise, and block-wise breakdown points. Theoretical and empirical analyses demonstrate that our algorithm exhibits higher breakdown points compared to standard SVD and its modifications. We empirically validate the effectiveness of our approach in applications such as robust low-rank approximation and robust principal component analysis of high-dimensional microarray datasets. Overall, our study presents a highly efficient and robust solution for SVD approximation that overcomes the limitations of existing algorithms in the presence of outliers. | 2024 | Constrained Sorter Design using Zero-One PrincipleabstractTo derive efficient sorting architectures constrained to application-specific input/output conditions, we present in this paper a systematic design methodology that can effectively prune dispensable compare-and-swap (CAS) units. Unlike the previous works resorting to heuristic approaches, the proposed framework exploits the zero-one principle to validate the pruning of a CAS unit at a time, generating the cost-optimized sorter architecture in an iterative manner with a reasonable complexity. In addition to the given input/output constraints, we newly develop the architecture options for the proposed framework, allowing more design spaces for finding the most attractive constrained-sorter design. For 8-list polar decoders, the proposed framework successfully reduces 70% of CAS units in the baseline full sorter, relaxing the area-time complexity by 35% compared with the state-of-the-art solutions. | 2024 | A Design Framework for Cost-Efficient Sorters With Arbitrary Input/Output ConstraintsabstractThe sorting operation plays a vital role in various signal processing applications. However, due to high hardware complexity resulting from a series of comparisons, designing the cost-efficient sorter is one of the crucial requisites for improving the overall system performance. To obtain the cost-efficient sorting architectures constrained to application-specific input/output conditions, this paper presents a systematic design methodology that effectively eliminates dispensable compare-and-swap (CAS) units. Unlike the previous heuristic approaches, the proposed framework iteratively prunes a CAS unit followed by the validation step. The zero-one principle is newly applied to reduce the validation time for the practical convergence time with massive searching iterations. To expand the search space of the proposed framework, furthermore, we introduce new architectural options and pruning methods, allowing the cost-efficient design results even compared to the state-of-the-art solutions. Targeting the constrained sorters for communication systems, numerous case studies show that the proposed framework successfully removes more than half of CAS units in the baseline sorter design, significantly relaxing the area-time complexity, e.g., 35% reduction compared to the state-of-the-art architecture for 16-input metric sorter in the SCL polar decoder. | 2007 | Simulink-Based MPSoC Design Flow: Case Study of Motion-JPEG and H.264abstractSystem-level design methodologies have been introduced as a solution to handle the design complexity of embedded multiprocessor SoC (MPSoC) systems. In this paper we describe a system-level design flow starting from Simulink specification, focusing on concurrent hardware and software design and verification at four different abstraction levels: Simulink Combined Algorithm and Architecture Model (CAAM), Virtual Architecture, Transaction-accurate Model and Virtual Prototype. We used two multimedia applications, Motion-JPEG and H.264, to evaluate this design flow. Experimental results show that our design flow can generate various MPSoC architectures from Simulink CAAM correctly and efficiently, allowing processor and task design space exploration at different abstraction levels. | 2007 | Reducing fine-grain communication overhead in multithread code generation for heterogeneous MPSoCabstractHeterogeneous MPSoCs present unique opportunities for emerging embedded applications, which require both high-performance and programmability. Although, software programming for these MPSoC architectures requires tedious and error-prone tasks, thereby automatic code generation tools are required. A code generation method based on fine-grain specification can provide more design space and optimization opportunities, such as exploiting fine-level parallelism and more efficient partitions. However, when partitioned, fine-grain models may require a large number of inter-processor communications, decreasing the overall system performance. This paper presents a Simulink-based multithread code generation method, which applies Message Aggregation optimization technique to reduce the number of inter-processor communications. This technique reduces the communication overheads in terms of execution time by reduction on the number of messages exchanged and in terms of memory size by the reduction on the number of channels. The paper also presents experiment results for one multimedia application, showing performance improvements and memory reduction obtained with Message Aggregation technique. | 2006 | Functional modeling techniques for efficient SW code generation of video codec applicationsabstractArchitectures with multiple programmable cores are becoming more attractive for video codec applications because they can provide highly concurrent compilation and support multiple video standards and a shorter time-to-market. To find an efficient SW code for the multiple core architecture for a video codec application, it is very important to easily explore the design space by generating a SW code automatically from its functional model. We introduce Abstract Clock Synchronous Model (ACSM) for functional modeling of video codec applications. The ACSM can easily represent both parallelism and conditionals, which are common in video codec applications. By applying ACSM to an H.264 baseline decoder on single core architecture, we reduced the execution time and the number of external memory accesses by 32 % and 46 % respectively compared to traditional dataflow model. | 2006 | Buffer memory optimization for video codec application modeled in SimulinkabstractReduction of the on-chip memory size is a key issue in video codec system design. Because video codec applications involve complex algorithms that are both data-intensive and control-dependent, memory optimization based on global and precise analysis of data and control dependency is required. We generate a memory-efficient C code from a restricted Simulink model, which can represent both data and control dependency explicitly, by applying two buffer memory optimization techniques: copy removal and buffer sharing. Copy removal is performed while parsing the Simulink model. Buffer sharing requires global scheduling and formal lifetime analysis. Experimental results on an H.264 video decoder show that the buffer memory size and execution time of the C code generated by the proposed method are 71% and 32% less than those of the C code produced by Simulink's C code generator, respectively. When compared to the hand written C code, the memory size was reduced by 27% while its execution time was increased by only 3%. Sangil Han, Xavier Guerin, Soo-Ik Chae, Ahmed Amine Jerraya |

| 2004 | An efficient scalable and flexible data transfer architecture for multiprocessor SoC with massive distributed memoryabstractMassive data transfer encountered in emerging multimedia embedded applications requires architecture allowing both highly distributed memory structure and multiprocessor computation to be handled. The key issue that needs to be solved is then how to manage data transfers between large numbers of distributed memories. To overcome this issue, our paper proposes a scalable Distributed Memory Server (DMS) for multiprocessor SoC (MPSoC). The proposed DMS is composed of: (1) high-performance and flexible memory service access points (MSAPs), which execute data transfers without intervention of the processing elements, (2) data network, and (3) control network. It can handle direct massive data transfer between the distributed memories of an MPSoC. The scalability and flexibility of the proposed DMS are illustrated through the implementation of an MPEG4 video encoder for QCIF and CIF formats. The experiments show clearly how DMS can be adapted to accommodate different SoC configurations requiring various data transfer bandwidths. Synthesis results show that bandwidth can scale up to 28.8 GB/sec. Sangil Han, Amer Baghdadi, Marius Bonaciu, Soo-Ik Chae, Ahmed Amine Jerraya |
