| 2025 | Instantaneous Power Distribution of ODDM SignalsabstractOrthogonal delay-Doppler division multiplexing (ODDM) has been proposed as a novel modulation scheme for high-mobility environments. Since it is a multi-carrier modulation scheme, ODDM may be subject to concerns regarding high peak-to-average power ratio, which is a practically important issue but remains to be thoroughly studied. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the instantaneous power distribution of ODDM using its wideband filtered OFDM-based approximate implementation. Specifically, the output of the inverse discrete Fourier transform in this implementation is treated as the signal alphabet of a single-carrier modulation scheme. Analytical results show good agreement with simulations, validating the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Yusuke Sato, Yi-Han Chiang, Hai Lin 0001 |

| 2024 | Physiological Correlates While Playing Tetris: A Comparative Study Between Males and FemalesabstractWhen developing commercial games, the difficulty level is carefully designed to satisfy the majority of game players. An inappropriate difficulty level can cause stress for game players and lead them to quit the game. Designing a game that is suitable and enjoyable for everyone is a daunting task, especially with the specific individual needs of everyone. Our goal is to provide insights into game design that can be suitable for males and females. Thus, we investigate gender differences in the game Tetris. We compare subjective ratings, questionnaire responses, electrodermal activity (EDA), and electrocardiogram (ECG) data obtained from 5 males and 5 females while playing Tetris. Our results show that a high feeling of control correlates with high skin conductance level (SCL), skin conductance response (SCR), and low heart rate (HR) which was found in the male sample. Low feelings of control and high anxiety correlate with high HR and low SCL and SCR, which was realized in the female sample. Game self-skill, playing hours, and game experience questionnaire (G EQ) responses do not show gender differences in gameplay. Gender differences were exclusively pronounced when physiological data was studied. Yusuke Sato, Ahmed Salem 0003, Kaoru Sumi |

| 2017 | Height Estimation based on Sensor Data on SmartphoneabstractBigdata processing platform, such as cloud computing using container-based virtualization, enabled large-scale sensor data analyzes. In addition, smartphones have been popular, estimation of a lot of information, such as user's behavior, by analyzing its sensor data has become possible. In this study, we focus on the estimation of whether the user is tall or short as the first study of estimating the user's height from the data of the triaxial acceleration sensor during walking. We propose methods for estimating the height of the user from the sensor data using machine learning. We then show its effectiveness by performance evaluation. | 2014 | HapMuC: somatic mutation calling using heterozygous germ line variants near candidate mutationsabstractMOTIVATION: Identifying somatic changes from tumor and matched normal sequences has become a standard approach in cancer research. More specifically, this requires accurate detection of somatic point mutations with low allele frequencies in impure and heterogeneous cancer samples. Although haplotype phasing information derived by using heterozygous germ line variants near candidate mutations would improve accuracy, no somatic mutation caller that uses such information is currently available. RESULTS: We propose a Bayesian hierarchical method, termed HapMuC, in which power is increased by using available information on heterozygous germ line variants located near candidate mutations. We first constructed two generative models (the mutation model and the error model). In the generative models, we prepared candidate haplotypes, considering a heterozygous germ line variant if available, and the observed reads were realigned to the haplotypes. We then inferred the haplotype frequencies and computed the marginal likelihoods using a variational Bayesian algorithm. Finally, we derived a Bayes factor for evaluating the possibility of the existence of somatic mutations. We also demonstrated that our algorithm has superior specificity and sensitivity compared with existing methods, as determined based on a simulation, the TCGA Mutation Calling Benchmark 4 datasets and data from the COLO-829 cell line. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: The HapMuC source code is available from http://github.com/usuyama/hapmuc. | 2010 | Reduction of broadband noise in speech signals by multilinear subspace analysisabstractA new noise reduction method for speech signals is proposed in this paper. The method is based upon the N-mode singular value decomposition algorithm, which exploits the multilinear subspace analysis of given speech data. Simulation results using both synthetically generated and real broadband noise components show that the enhancement quality obtained by the multilinear subspace analysis method in terms of both segmental gain and cepstral distance, as well as informal listening tests, is superior to that by a conventional nonlinear spectral subtraction method and the previously proposed approach based upon sliding subspace projection. | 2010 | Development of a walking assistance apparatus using a spatial parallel link mechanism and evaluation of muscle activityabstractA prototype for a walking assistance apparatus for the elderly or motor palsy patients was developed, using a novel spatial parallel link mechanism. The flat steps of the apparatus move in parallel with the ground; the apparatus can support entire leg alignment (including soles) and assist; walking behavior at ankle, knee and hip joints simultaneously. By using a flexible link, constructed of stainless steel and rubber, the apparatus can realize the natural twisting motions of the ankle. Furthermore, in order to assist walking on uneven surfaces, we investigated walking on a slopes or stairs. For these tasks, the apparatus was equipped with a gyro sensor and an ultrasonic sensor; so the angle of the slope and the height of the stairs could be recognized. The apparatus adapted according to the signals from these sensors. Results owed that our experiment, the equipped person wearing the apparatus could walk on slopes and stairs. Motor palsy and muscle weakness patients can walk by themselves by using the apparatus; patients who have ambulation difficulty can use the apparatus with weight bearing lift that we developed. Using the apparatus with the weight bearing lift prevents stumbling and enables input of walking movement to the brain motor area. It may be beneficial for rehabilitation to use the apparatus with the weight bearing lift. This newly developed system may facilitate motor palsy and muscle weakness patients in the rehabilitation program. The effectiveness of the apparatus for one hour walking was evaluated by variation of Mean Power Frequency (MPF) of the Electromyography (EMG) data with continuous wavelet analysis. Muscle fatigue of the Tibialis Anterior muscle (TA) decreased during wearing of the apparatus. We showed the effectiveness of using the apparatus in walking.
