| 2023 | APOSTLE: Asynchronously Parallel Optimization for Sizing Analog Transistors Using DNN LearningabstractAnalog circuit sizing is a high-cost process in terms of the manual effort invested and the computation time spent. With rapidly developing technology and high market demand, bringing automated solutions for sizing has attracted great attention. This paper presents APOSTLE, an asynchronously parallel optimization method for sizing analog transistors using Deep Neural Network (DNN) learning. This work introduces several methods to minimize real-time of optimization when the sizing task consists of several different simulations with varying time costs. The key contributions of this paper are: (1) a batch optimization framework, (2) a novel deep neural network architecture for exploring design points when the existed solutions are not always fully evaluated, (3) a ranking approximation method based on cheap evaluations and (4) a theoretical approach to balance between the cheap and the expensive simulations to maximize the optimization efficiency. Our method shows high real-time efficiency compared to other black-box optimization methods both on small building blocks and on large industrial circuits while reaching similar or better performance. | 2020 | Multi-Fidelity Surrogate-Based Optimization for Electromagnetic Simulation AccelerationabstractAs circuits’ speed and frequency increase, fast and accurate capture of the details of the parasitics in metal structures, such as inductors and clock trees, becomes more critical. However, conducting high-fidelity 3D electromagnetic (EM) simulations within the design loop is very time consuming and computationally expensive. To address this issue, we propose a surrogate-based optimization methodology flow, namely multi-fidelity surrogate-based optimization with candidate search (MFSBO-CS), which integrates the concept of multi-fidelity to reduce the full-wave EM simulation cost in analog/RF simulation-based optimization problems. To do so, a statistical co-kriging model is adapted as the surrogate to model the response surface, and a parallelizable perturbation-based adaptive sampling method is used to find the optima. Within the proposed method, low-fidelity fast RC parasitic extraction tools and high-fidelity full-wave EM solvers are used together to model the target design and then guide the proposed adaptive sample method to achieve the final optimal design parameters. The sampling method in this work not only delivers additional coverage of design space but also helps increase the accuracy of the surrogate model efficiently by updating multiple samples within one iteration. Moreover, a novel modeling technique is developed to further improve the multi-fidelity surrogate model at an acceptable additional computation cost. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is validated by mathematical proofs and numerical test function demonstration. In this article, MFSBO-CS has been applied to two design cases, and the result shows that the proposed methodology offers a cost-efficient solution for analog/RF design problems involving EM simulation. For the two design cases, MFSBO-CS either reaches comparably or outperforms the optimization result from various Bayesian optimization methods with only approximately one- to two-thirds of the computation cost. | 2010 | Fast Analysis of a Large-Scale Inductive Interconnect by Block-Structure-Preserved MacromodelingabstractAbstract—To efficiently analyze the large-scale interconnect dominant circuits with inductive couplings (mutual inductances), this paper introduces a new state matrix, called VNA, to stamp inverse-inductance elements by replacing inductive-branch current with flux. The state matrix under VNA is diagonal-dominant, sparse, and passive. To further explore the sparsity and hierarchy at the block level, a new matrix-stretching method is introduced to reorder coupled fluxes into a decoupled state matrix with a bordered block diagonal (BBD) structure. A corresponding block-structure-preserved model-order reduction, called BVOR, is developed to preserve the sparsity and hierarchy of the BBD matrix at the block level. This enables us to efficiently build and simulate the macromodel within a SPICE-like circuit simulator. Experiments show that our method achieves up to 7 faster modeling building time, up to 33 faster simulation time, and as much as 67 smaller waveform error compared to SAPOR [a second-order reduction based on nodal analysis (NA)] and PACT (a first-order 2 2 structured reduction based on modified NA). | 2006 | A fast block structure preserving model order reduction for inverse inductance circuitsabstractMost existing RCL-1 circuit reductions stamp inverse inductance L-1 elements by a second-order nodal analysis (NA). The NA formulation uses nodal voltage variables and describes inductance by nodal susceptance. This leads to a singular matrix stamping in general. We introduce a new circuit stamping for RCL-1 circuits using branch vector potentials. The new circuit stamping results in a first-order circuit matrix that is semi-positive definite and non-singular. We call this as vectorpotential based nodal analysis (VNA). It enables an accurate and passive reduction. In addition, to preserve the structure of state matrices such as sparsity and hierarchy, we represent the flat VNA matrix in a bordered-block diagonal (BBD) form. This enables us to build and simulate the macromodel efficiently. In experiments performed on several test cases, our method achieves up to 15X faster modeling building time, up to 33X faster simulation time, and as much as 67X smaller waveform error compared to SAPOR, the best existing second order RCL-1 reduction method. | 1995 | Robust VLSI circuit simulation techniques based on overlapped waveform relaxationabstractHigh-performance mainframe computers are commonly implemented using bipolar VLSI technologies. The simulation of such circuits is very time-consuming using traditional direct methods, as in SPICE. Relaxation-based methods such as waveform relaxation (WR) have been used to speed up the simulation of MOS circuits, but they have not been as effective for bipolar circuits because of the strong coupling between logic gates. In this paper, a fast, robust overlapped waveform relaxation (OWR) algorithm is presented. OWR is effective for bipolar circuits because it uses an overlapped partitioning strategy to overcome the effect of strong coupling on convergence speed. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm, simulation results are presented for combinational and sequential digital bipolar circuits as well as analog bipolar circuits. From the simulation results, it can be concluded that the speed advantage of OWR compared to the direct method increases with circuit size. The OWR algorithm is more robust than standard WR; it converges in cases where WR diverges or converges too slowly. OWR is about two times faster than WR for tightly coupled bipolar circuits.> M.
