2026 RecCocktail: A Generalizable and Efficient Framework for LLM-Based Recommendation
abstract
Large Language Models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable success in recent years, owing to their impressive generalization capabilities and rich world knowledge. To capitalize on the potential of using LLMs as recommender systems, mainstream approaches typically focus on two paradigms. The first paradigm designs multi-domain or multi-task instruction data for generalizable recommendation, so as to align LLMs with general recommendation areas and deal with cold-start recommendation. The second paradigm focuses on enhancing domain-specific recommendation tasks, improving performance in warm recommendation scenarios. While most previous works treat these two paradigms separately, we argue that they have complementary advantages, and combining them can yield better results. In this paper, we propose a generalizable and efficient LLM-based recommendation framework RecCocktail. Our approach begins with fine-tuning a "base spirit" LoRA module using domain-general recommendation instruction data to align LLM with recommendation knowledge. Next, given users' behavior of a specific domain, we construct a domain-specific "ingredient" LoRA module. We then provide an entropy-guided adaptive merging method to mix the "base spirit" and the "ingredient" in the weight space. Please note that, RecCocktail combines the advantages of the existing two paradigms without introducing additional time or space overhead during the inference phase. Moreover, RecCocktail is efficient with plug and play, as the "base spirit" LoRA is trained only once, and any domain-specific "ingredient" can be efficiently mixed with only domain-specific fine-tuning. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets under both warm and cold-start recommendation scenarios validate the effectiveness and generality of the proposed RecCocktail.

2025 OCRBench v2: An Improved Benchmark for Evaluating Large Multimodal Models on Visual Text Localization and Reasoning
abstract
Scoring the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) capabilities of Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) has witnessed growing interest. Existing benchmarks have highlighted the impressive performance of LMMs in text recognition; however, their abilities in certain challenging tasks, such as text localization, handwritten content extraction, and logical reasoning, remain underexplored. To bridge this gap, we introduce OCRBench v2, a large-scale bilingual text-centric benchmark with currently the most comprehensive set of tasks ($4\times$ more tasks than the previous multi-scene benchmark OCRBench), the widest coverage of scenarios ($31$ diverse scenarios), and thorough evaluation metrics, with $10,000$ human-verified question-answering pairs and a high proportion of difficult samples. Moreover, we construct a private test set with $1,500$ manually annotated images. The consistent evaluation trends observed across both public and private test sets validate the OCRBench v2's reliability. After carefully benchmarking state-of-the-art LMMs, we find that most LMMs score below $50$ ($100$ in total) and suffer from five-type limitations, including less frequently encountered text recognition, fine-grained perception, layout perception, complex element parsing, and logical reasoning. The benchmark and evaluation scripts are available at https://github.com/Yuliang-Liu/MultimodalOCR.

2024 Grab What You Need: Rethinking Complex Table Structure Recognition with Flexible Components Deliberation
abstract
Recently, Table Structure Recognition (TSR) task, aiming at identifying table structure into machine readable formats, has received increasing interest in the community. While impressive success, most single table component-based methods can not perform well on unregularized table cases distracted by not only complicated inner structure but also exterior capture distortion. In this paper, we raise it as Complex TSR problem, where the performance degeneration of existing methods is attributable to their inefficient component usage and redundant post-processing. To mitigate it, we shift our perspective from table component extraction towards the efficient multiple components leverage, which awaits further exploration in the field. Specifically, we propose a seminal method, termed GrabTab, equipped with newly proposed Component Deliberator, to handle various types of tables in a unified framework. Thanks to its progressive deliberation mechanism, our GrabTab can flexibly accommodate to most complex tables with reasonable components selected but without complicated post-processing involved. Quantitative experimental results on public benchmarks demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-arts, especially under more challenging scenes.

2024 Multi-modal In-Context Learning Makes an Ego-evolving Scene Text Recognizer
abstract
Scene text recognition (STR) in the wild frequently en-counters challenges when coping with domain variations, font diversity, shape deformations, etc. A straightforward solution is performing model fine-tuning tailored to a spe-cific scenario, but it is computationally intensive and re-quires multiple model copies for various scenarios. Re-cent studies indicate that large language models (LLMs) can learn from afew demonstration examples in a training-free manner, termed “In-Context Learning” (ICL). Never-theless, applying LLMs as a text recognizer is unacceptably resource-consuming. Moreover, our pilot experiments on LLMs show that ICL fails in STR, mainly attributed to the insufficient incorporation of contextual information from di-verse samples in the training stage. To this end, we intro-duce E2 STR, a STR model trained with context-rich scene text sequences, where the sequences are generated via our proposed in-context training strategy. E2 STR demonstrates that a regular-sized model is sufficient to achieve effective ICL capabilities in STR. Extensive experiments show that E2 STR exhibits remarkable training-free adaptation in var-ious scenarios and outperforms even the fine-tuned state-of-the-art approaches on public benchmarks. The code is released at https://github.com/bytedanceIE2STR.

2024 TabPedia: Towards Comprehensive Visual Table Understanding with Concept Synergy
abstract
Tables contain factual and quantitative data accompanied by various structures and contents that pose challenges for machine comprehension. Previous methods generally design task-specific architectures and objectives for individual tasks, resulting in modal isolation and intricate workflows. In this paper, we present a novel large vision-language model, TabPedia, equipped with a concept synergy mechanism. In this mechanism, all the involved diverse visual table understanding (VTU) tasks and multi-source visual embeddings are abstracted as concepts. This unified framework allows TabPedia to seamlessly integrate VTU tasks, such as table detection, table structure recognition, table querying, and table question answering, by leveraging the capabilities of large language models (LLMs). Moreover, the concept synergy mechanism enables table perception-related and comprehension-related tasks to work in harmony, as they can effectively leverage the needed clues from the corresponding source perception embeddings. Furthermore, to better evaluate the VTU task in real-world scenarios, we establish a new and comprehensive table VQA benchmark, ComTQA, featuring approximately 9,000 QA pairs. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments on both table perception and comprehension tasks, conducted across various public benchmarks, validate the effectiveness of our TabPedia. The superior performance further confirms the feasibility of using LLMs for understanding visual tables when all concepts work in synergy. The benchmark ComTQA has been open-sourced at https://huggingface.co/datasets/ByteDance/ComTQA. The source code and model also have been released at https://github.com/zhaowc-ustc/TabPedia.

2024 Harmonizing Visual Text Comprehension and Generation
abstract
In this work, we present TextHarmony, a unified and versatile multimodal generative model proficient in comprehending and generating visual text. Simultaneously generating images and texts typically results in performance degradation due to the inherent inconsistency between vision and language modalities. To overcome this challenge, existing approaches resort to modality-specific data for supervised fine-tuning, necessitating distinct model instances. We propose Slide-LoRA, which dynamically aggregates modality-specific and modality-agnostic LoRA experts, partially decoupling the multimodal generation space. Slide-LoRA harmonizes the generation of vision and language within a singular model instance, thereby facilitating a more unified generative process. Additionally, we develop a high-quality image caption dataset, DetailedTextCaps-100K, synthesized with a sophisticated closed-source MLLM to enhance visual text generation capabilities further. Comprehensive experiments across various benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Empowered by Slide-LoRA, TextHarmony achieves comparable performance to modality-specific fine-tuning results with only a 2% increase in parameters and shows an average improvement of 2.5% in visual text comprehension tasks and 4.0% in visual text generation tasks. Our work delineates the viability of an integrated approach to multimodal generation within the visual text domain, setting a foundation for subsequent inquiries. Code is available at https://github.com/bytedance/TextHarmony.

2024 SYRER: Synergistic Relational Reasoning for RGB-D Cross-Modal Re-Identification
abstract
RGB-D cross-modal person re-identification is designed to match the people across the RGB and depth image modalities, where the large modality discrepancy makes this task intractable to tackle. To alleviate the negative effect brought by the discrepancy, this paper proposes a novel SYnergistic RElational Reasoning (SYRER) method, which targets at exploring the synergy between hetero-modalities for recognizing persons. We design a heterogeneous relationship contrast branch to establish intra-class and inter-class cross-modal relationships, which implements the cross-modal relation contrast learning to cope with imperceptible cross-modal inter-class differences and large cross-modal intra-class discrepancy. Additionally, in order to adequately represent the irregular depth images, we propose a point-wise depth extractor to extract non-uniform discriminative point features from depth images. Experimental results on two public datasets indicate the proposed SYRER surpasses the state-of-the-arts. And we also perform a series of analytic experiments to verify the effectiveness of each submodule of our SYRER.

2024 Asymmetric Deformable Spatio-temporal Framework for Infrared Object Tracking
abstract
The Infrared Object Tracking (IOT) task aims to locate objects in infrared sequences. Since color and texture information is unavailable in infrared modality, most existing infrared trackers merely rely on capturing spatial contexts from the image to enhance feature representation, where other complementary information is rarely deployed. To fill this gap, we in this article propose a novel Asymmetric Deformable Spatio-Temporal Framework (ADSF) to fully exploit collaborative shape and temporal clues in terms of the objects. Firstly, an asymmetric deformable cross-attention module is designed to extract shape information, which attends to the deformable correlations between distinct frames in an asymmetric manner. Secondly, a spatio-temporal tracking framework is coined to learn the temporal variance trend of the object during the training process and store the template information closest to the tracking frame when testing. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that ADSF outperforms state-of-the-art methods on three public datasets. Extensive ablation experiments further confirm the effectiveness of each component in ADSF. Furthermore, we conduct generalization validation to demonstrate that the proposed method also achieves performance gains in RGB-based tracking scenarios.

2023 The Devil Is in the Frequency: Geminated Gestalt Autoencoder for Self-Supervised Visual Pre-training
abstract
The self-supervised Masked Image Modeling (MIM) schema, following "mask-and-reconstruct" pipeline of recovering contents from masked image, has recently captured the increasing interest in the community, owing to the excellent ability of learning visual representation from unlabeled data. Aiming at learning representations with high semantics abstracted, a group of works attempts to reconstruct non-semantic pixels with large-ratio masking strategy, which may suffer from "over-smoothing" problem, while others directly infuse semantics into targets in off-line way requiring extra data. Different from them, we shift the perspective to the Fourier domain which naturally has global perspective and present a new Masked Image Modeling (MIM), termed Geminated Gestalt Autoencoder (Ge^2-AE) for visual pre-training. Specifically, we equip our model with geminated decoders in charge of reconstructing image contents from both pixel and frequency space, where each other serves as not only the complementation but also the reciprocal constraints. Through this way, more robust representations can be learned in the pre-trained encoders, of which the effectiveness is confirmed by the juxtaposing experimental results on downstream recognition tasks. We also conduct several quantitative and qualitative experiments to investigate the learning behavior of our method. To our best knowledge, this is the first MIM work to solve the visual pre-training through the lens of frequency domain.

2023 TaCo: Textual Attribute Recognition via Contrastive Learning
abstract
As textual attributes like font are core design elements of document format and page style, automatic attributes recognition favor comprehensive practical applications. Existing approaches already yield satisfactory performance in differentiating disparate attributes, but they still suffer in distinguishing similar attributes with only subtle difference. Moreover, their performance drop severely in real-world scenarios where unexpected and obvious imaging distortions appear. In this paper, we aim to tackle these problems by proposing TaCo, a contrastive framework for textual attribute recognition tailored toward the most common document scenes. Specifically, TaCo leverages contrastive learning to dispel the ambiguity trap arising from vague and open-ended attributes. To realize this goal, we design the learning paradigm from three perspectives: 1) generating attribute views, 2) extracting subtle but crucial details, and 3) exploiting valued view pairs for learning, to fully unlock the pre-training potential. Extensive experiments show that TaCo surpasses the supervised counterparts and advances the state-of-the-art remarkably on multiple attribute recognition tasks. Online services of TaCo will be made available.

2023 Locate Then Generate: Bridging Vision and Language with Bounding Box for Scene-Text VQA
abstract
In this paper, we propose a novel multi-modal framework for Scene Text Visual Question Answering (STVQA), which requires models to read scene text in images for question answering. Apart from text or visual objects, which could exist independently, scene text naturally links text and visual modalities together by conveying linguistic semantics while being a visual object in an image simultaneously. Different to conventional STVQA models which take the linguistic semantics and visual semantics in scene text as two separate features, in this paper, we propose a paradigm of "Locate Then Generate" (LTG), which explicitly unifies this two semantics with the spatial bounding box as a bridge connecting them. Specifically, at first, LTG locates the region in an image that may contain the answer words with an answer location module (ALM) consisting of a region proposal network and a language refinement network, both of which can transform to each other with one-to-one mapping via the scene text bounding box. Next, given the answer words selected by ALM, LTG generates a readable answer sequence with an answer generation module (AGM) based on a pre-trained language model. As a benefit of the explicit alignment of the visual and linguistic semantics, even without any scene text based pre-training tasks, LTG can boost the absolute accuracy by +6.06% and +6.92% on the TextVQA dataset and the ST-VQA dataset respectively, compared with a non-pre-training baseline. We further demonstrate that LTG effectively unifies visual and text modalities through the spatial bounding box connection, which is underappreciated in previous methods.

2023 Attention Where It Matters: Rethinking Visual Document Understanding with Selective Region Concentration
abstract
We propose a novel end-to-end document understanding model called SeRum (SElective Region Understanding Model) for extracting meaningful information from document images, including document analysis, retrieval, and office automation. Unlike state-of-the-art approaches that rely on multi-stage technical schemes and are computationally expensive, SeRum converts document image understanding and recognition tasks into a local decoding process of the visual tokens of interest, using a content-aware token merge module. This mechanism enables the model to pay more attention to regions of interest generated by the query decoder, improving the model’s effectiveness and speeding up the decoding speed of the generative scheme. We also designed several pre-training tasks to enhance the understanding and local awareness of the model. Experimental results demonstrate that SeRum achieves state-of-the-art performance on document understanding tasks and competitive results on text spotting tasks. SeRum represents a substantial advancement towards enabling efficient and effective end-to-end document understanding.

2023 RefBERT: A Two-Stage Pre-trained Framework for Automatic Rename Refactoring
abstract
Refactoring is an indispensable practice of improving the quality and maintainability of source code in software evolution. Rename refactoring is the most frequently performed refactoring that suggests a new name for an identifier to enhance readability when the identifier is poorly named. However, most existing works only identify renaming activities between two versions of source code, while few works express concern about how to suggest a new name. In this paper, we study automatic rename refactoring on variable names, which is considered more challenging than other rename refactoring activities. We first point out the connections between rename refactoring and various prevalent learning paradigms and the difference between rename refactoring and general text generation in natural language processing. Based on our observations, we propose RefBERT, a two-stage pre-trained framework for rename refactoring on variable names. RefBERT first predicts the number of sub-tokens in the new name and then generates sub-tokens accordingly. Several techniques, including constrained masked language modeling, contrastive learning, and the bag-of-tokens loss, are incorporated into RefBERT to tailor it for automatic rename refactoring on variable names. Through extensive experiments on our constructed refactoring datasets, we show that the generated variable names of RefBERT are more accurate and meaningful than those produced by the existing method. Our implementation and data are available at https://github.com/KDEGroup/RefBERT.

2022 Perceiving Stroke-Semantic Context: Hierarchical Contrastive Learning for Robust Scene Text Recognition
abstract
We introduce Perceiving Stroke-Semantic Context (PerSec), a new approach to self-supervised representation learning tailored for Scene Text Recognition (STR) task. Considering scene text images carry both visual and semantic properties, we equip our PerSec with dual context perceivers which can contrast and learn latent representations from low-level stroke and high-level semantic contextual spaces simultaneously via hierarchical contrastive learning on unlabeled text image data. Experiments in un- and semi-supervised learning settings on STR benchmarks demonstrate our proposed framework can yield a more robust representation for both CTC-based and attention-based decoders than other contrastive learning methods. To fully investigate the potential of our method, we also collect a dataset of 100 million unlabeled text images, named UTI-100M, covering 5 scenes and 4 languages. By leveraging hundred-million-level unlabeled data, our PerSec shows significant performance improvement when fine-tuning the learned representation on the labeled data. Furthermore, we observe that the representation learned by PerSec presents great generalization, especially under few labeled data scenes.

2022 NomMer: Nominate Synergistic Context in Vision Transformer for Visual Recognition
abstract
Recently, Vision Transformers (ViT), with the self-attention (SA) as the de facto ingredients, have demon-strated great potential in the computer vision community. For the sake of trade-off between efficiency and performance, a group of works merely perform SA operation within local patches, whereas the global contextual information is abandoned, which would be indispensable for visual recognition tasks. To solve the issue, the subsequent global-local ViTs take a stab at marrying local SA with global one in parallel or alternative way in the model. Nevertheless, the exhaustively combined local and global context may exist redundancy for various visual data, and the receptive field within each layer is fixed. Alternatively, a more graceful way is that global and local context can adaptively contribute per se to accommodate different visual data. To achieve this goal, we in this paper propose a novel ViT architecture, termed NomMer, which can dynamically Nominate the synergistic global-local context in vision transforMer. By investigating the working pattern of NomMer, we further explore what context information is focused. Beneficial from this “dynamic nomination” mechanism, without bells and whistles, the NomMer can not only achieve 84.5% Top-1 classification accuracy on ImageNet with only 73M parameters, but also show promising performance on dense prediction tasks, i.e., object detection and semantic segmentation. The code and models are publicly available at https://github.com/TencentYoutuResearch/VisualRecognition-NomMer.

2022 Neural Collaborative Graph Machines for Table Structure Recognition
abstract
Recently, table structure recognition has achieved impressive progress with the help of deep graph models. Most of them exploit single visual cues of tabular elements or simply combine visual cues with other modalities via early fusion to reason their graph relationships. However, neither early fusion nor individually reasoning in terms of multiple modalities can be appropriate for all varieties of table structures with great diversity. Instead, different modalities are expected to collaborate with each other in different patterns for different table cases. In the community, the importance of intrainter modality interactions for table structure reasoning is still unexplored. In this paper, we define it as heterogeneous table structure recognition (HeteroTSR) problem. With the aim offilling this gap, we present a novel Neural Collaborative Graph Machines (NCGM) equipped with stacked collaborative blocks, which alternatively extracts intramodality context and models inter-modality interactions in a hierarchical way. It can represent the intrainter modality relationships of tabular elements more robustly, which significantly improves the recognition performance. We also show that the proposed NCGM can modulate collaborative pattern of different modalities conditioned on the context of intramodality cues, which is vital for diversified table cases. Experimental results on benchmarks demonstrate our proposed NCGM achieves state-of-the-art performance and beats other contemporary methods by a large margin especially under challenging scenarios.

2022 Knowledge Mining with Scene Text for Fine-Grained Recognition
abstract
Recently, the semantics of scene text has been proven to be essential in fine-grained image classification. However, the existing methods mainly exploit the literal meaning of scene text for fine-grained recognition, which might be irrelevant when it is not significantly related to objects/scenes. We propose an end-to-end trainable network that mines implicit contextual knowledge behind scene text image and enhance the semantics and correlation to fine-tune the image representation. Unlike the existing methods, our model integrates three modalities: visual feature extraction, text semantics extraction, and correlating background knowledge to fine-grained image classification. Specifically, we employ KnowBert to retrieve relevant knowledge for semantic representation and combine it with image features for fine-grained classification. Experiments on two benchmark datasets, Con-Text, and Drink Bottle, show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art by 3.72% mAP and 5.39% mAp, respectively. To further validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we create a new dataset on crowd activity recognition for the evaluation. The source code and new dataset of this work are available at this repository11https://github.com/lanfeng4659/KnowledgeMiningWithSceneText.

2022 Query-driven Generative Network for Document Information Extraction in the Wild
abstract
This paper focuses on solving Document Information Extraction (DIE) in the wild problem, which is rarely explored before. In contrast to existing studies mainly tailored for document cases in known templates with predefined layouts and keys under the ideal input without OCR errors involved, we aim to build up a more practical DIE paradigm for real-world scenarios where input document images may contain unknown layouts and keys in the scenes of the problematic OCR results. To achieve this goal, we propose a novel architecture, termed Query-driven Generative Network (QGN), which is equipped with two consecutive modules, i.e., Layout Context-aware Module (LCM) and Structured Generation Module (SGM). Given a document image with unseen layouts and fields, the former LCM yields the value prefix candidates serving as the query prompts for the SGM to generate the final key-value pairs even with OCR noise. To further investigate the potential of our method, we create a new large-scale dataset, named LArge-scale STructured Documents (LastDoc4000), containing 4,000 documents with 1,511 layouts and 3,500 different keys. In experiments, we demonstrate that our QGN consistently achieves the best F1-score on the new LastDoc4000 dataset by at most 30.32% absolute improvement. A more comprehensive experimental analysis and experiments on other public benchmarks also verify the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed method for the wild DIE task.

2021 RecycleNet: An Overlapped Text Instance Recovery Approach
abstract
Text recognition is the key pillar for many real-world multimedia applications. Existing text recognition approaches focus on recognizing isolated instances, whose text fields are visually separated and have no interference with each other. Moreover, these approaches cannot handle overlapped instances that often appear in sheets like invoices, receipts and math exercises, where printed templates are generated beforehand and extra contents are added afterward on existing texts. In this paper, we aim to tackle this problem by proposing RecycleNet, which automatically extracts and reconstructs overlapped instances by fully recycling the intersecting pixels that used to be obstacles for recognition. RecycleNet parallels to existing recognition systems, and serves as a plug-and-play module to boost recognition performance with zero-effort. We also released an OverlapText-500 dataset, which helps to boost the design of better overlapped text recovery and recognition solutions.

2021 Show, Read and Reason: Table Structure Recognition with Flexible Context Aggregator
abstract
We investigate the challenging problem of table structure recognition in this work. Many recent methods adopt graph-based context aggregator with strong inductive bias to reason sparse contextual relationships of table elements. However, the strong constraints may be too restrictive to represent the complicated table relationships. In order to learn more appropriate inductive bias from data, we try to introduce Transformer as context aggregator in this work. Nevertheless, Transformer taking dense context as input requires larger scale data and may suffer from unstable training procedure due to the weakening of inductive bias. To overcome the above limitations, we in this paper design a FLAG (FLexible context AGgregator), which marries Transformer with graph-based context aggregator in an adaptive way. Based on FLAG, an end-to-end framework requiring no extra meta-data or OCR information, termed FLAG-Net, is proposed to flexibly modulate the aggregation of dense context and sparse one for the relational reasoning of table elements. We investigate the modulation pattern in FLAG and show what contextual information is focused, which is vital for recognizing table structure. Extensive experimental results on benchmarks demonstrate the performance of our proposed FLAG-Net surpasses other compared methods by a large margin.

2020 Accurate Structured-Text Spotting for Arithmetical Exercise Correction
abstract
Correcting arithmetical exercise is a labor intensive and time consuming task for primary school teachers all the time. To reduce their burdens, we propose Arithmetical Exercise Checker (AEC), which is the first system that automatically evaluates all arithmetical expressions (AEs) on exercise images. The major challenge is that AE is formed by printed and handwritten texts with particular arithmetical patterns (e.g., multi-line, fraction). Despite being part of AE, handwritten texts usually lead to zigzag boundaries and tangled rows. What's worse, AE may be arithmetical incorrect, which makes the contextual information less valuable for recognition. To tackle these problems, we introduce integrated detection, recognition and evaluation branches by leveraging AE's intrinsic features, namely 1) boundary indistinctive, 2) locally relevant patterns and 3) globally irrelevant symbols. Experimental results demonstrate that AEC yields a 93.72% correction accuracy on 40 kinds of mainstream primary arithmetical exercises. So far, the online service of AEC processes 75, 000 arbitrary exercises on average per day, and already reduced the burden of over 1, 000, 000 users. AEC shows the benefits for implementing an vision-based system as a way to aid teachers in reducing reduplicative tasks.

2020 Person Attribute Recognition by Sequence Contextual Relation Learning
abstract
Person attribute recognition aims to identify the attribute labels from the pedestrian images. Extracting contextual relation from the images and attributes, including the spatial-semantic relations, the spatial context and the semantic correlation, is beneficial to enhance the discrimination of the features for recognizing the attributes. Thus, this work proposes a sequence contextual relation learning (SCRL) method to capture these relations. It first embeds the images and attributes into sequences in two branches. Then SCRL flexibly learns the contextual relation from the sequences with the parallel attention model structure, which integrates the inter-attention and intra-attention models. The inter-attention module is utilized to extract the spatial-semantic relations, while the intra-attention is designed to gain the spatial context and the semantic correlation. Both attention modules are comprised of several parallel attention units and each unit can obtain the pairwise relations in one subspace. Therefore, they obtain the relations in multiple subspaces, which can improve the comprehensiveness of the relation learning. Additionally, for the sake of better extraction of spatial-semantic relations, this paper employs connectionist temporal classification (CTC) loss which is capable of driving the network to enforce monotonic alignment between the image and attribute. It can also accelerate the convergence of the network by the algorithm in it. Extensive experiments on five public datasets, i.e., Market-1501 attribute, Duke attribute, PETA, RAP and PA-100K datasets, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2018 Multi-View Image Generation from a Single-View
abstract
How to generate multi-view images with realistic-looking appearance from only a single view input is a challenging problem. In this paper, we attack this problem by proposing a novel image generation model termed VariGANs, which combines the merits of the variational inference and the Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). It generates the target image in a coarse-to-fine manner instead of a single pass which suffers from severe artifacts. It first performs variational inference to model global appearance of the object (e.g., shape and color) and produces coarse images of different views. Conditioned on the generated coarse images, it then performs adversarial learning to fill details consistent with the input and generate the fine images. Extensive experiments conducted on two clothing datasets, MVC and DeepFashion, have demonstrated that the generated images with the proposed VariGANs are more plausible than those generated by existing approaches, which provide more consistent global appearance as well as richer and sharper details.

2018 Video-Based Person Re-Identification With Accumulative Motion Context
abstract
Video-based person re-identification plays a central role in realistic security and video surveillance. In this paper, we propose a novel accumulative motion context (AMOC) network for addressing this important problem, which effectively exploits the long-range motion context for robustly identifying the same person under challenging conditions. Given a video sequence of the same or different persons, the proposed AMOC network jointly learns appearance representation and motion context from a collection of adjacent frames using a two-stream convolutional architecture. Then, AMOC accumulates clues from motion context by recurrent aggregation, allowing effective information flow among adjacent frames and capturing dynamic gist of the persons. The architecture of AMOC is end-to-end trainable, and thus, motion context can be adapted to complement appearance clues under unfavorable conditions (e.g., occlusions). Extensive experiments are conduced on three public benchmark data sets, i.e., the iLIDS-VID, PRID-2011, and MARS data sets, to investigate the performance of AMOC. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed AMOC network outperforms state-of-the-arts for video-based re-identification significantly and confirm the advantage of exploiting long-range motion context for video-based person re-identification, validating our motivation evidently.

2017 Neural Person Search Machines
abstract
We investigate the problem of person search in the wild in this work. Instead of comparing the query against all candidate regions generated in a query-blind manner, we propose to recursively shrink the search area from the whole image till achieving precise localization of the target person, by fully exploiting information from the query and contextual cues in every recursive search step. We develop the Neural Person Search Machines (NPSM) to implement such recursive localization for person search. Benefiting from its neural search mechanism, NPSM is able to selectively shrink its focus from a loose region to a tighter one containing the target automatically. In this process, NPSM employs an internal primitive memory component to memorize the query representation which modulates the attention and augments its robustness to other distracting regions. Evaluations on two benchmark datasets, CUHK-SYSU Person Search dataset and PRW dataset, have demonstrated that our method can outperform current state-of-the-arts in both mAP and top-1 evaluation protocols.

2017 End-to-End Comparative Attention Networks for Person Re-Identification
abstract
Person re-identification across disjoint camera views has been widely applied in video surveillance yet it is still a challenging problem. One of the major challenges lies in the lack of spatial and temporal cues, which makes it difficult to deal with large variations of lighting conditions, viewing angles, body poses, and occlusions. Recently, several deep-learning-based person re-identification approaches have been proposed and achieved remarkable performance. However, most of those approaches extract discriminative features from the whole frame at one glimpse without differentiating various parts of the persons to identify. It is essentially important to examine multiple highly discriminative local regions of the person images in details through multiple glimpses for dealing with the large appearance variance. In this paper, we propose a new soft attention-based model, i.e., the end-to-end comparative attention network (CAN), specifically tailored for the task of person re-identification. The end-to-end CAN learns to selectively focus on parts of pairs of person images after taking a few glimpses of them and adaptively comparing their appearance. The CAN model is able to learn which parts of images are relevant for discerning persons and automatically integrates information from different parts to determine whether a pair of images belongs to the same person. In other words, our proposed CAN model simulates the human perception process to verify whether two images are from the same person. Extensive experiments on four benchmark person re-identification data sets, including CUHK01, CHUHK03, Market-1501, and VIPeR, clearly demonstrate that our proposed end-to-end CAN for person re-identification outperforms well established baselines significantly and offer the new state-of-the-art performance.

2016 Robust Face Recognition with Deep Multi-View Representation Learning
abstract
This paper describes our proposed method targeting at the MSR Image Recognition Challenge MS-Celeb-1M. The challenge is to recognize one million celebrities from their face images captured in the real world. The challenge provides a large scale dataset crawled from the Web, which contains a large number of celebrities with many images for each subject. Given a new testing image, the challenge requires an identify for the image and the corresponding confidence score. To complete the challenge, we propose a two-stage approach consisting of data cleaning and multi-view deep representation learning. The data cleaning can effectively reduce the noise level of training data and thus improves the performance of deep learning based face recognition models. The multi-view representation learning enables the learned face representations to be more specific and discriminative. Thus the difficulties of recognizing faces out of a huge number of subjects are substantially relieved. Our proposed method achieves a coverage of 46.1% at 95% precision on the random set and a coverage of 33.0% at 95% precision on the hard set of this challenge.

2015 Kernelized Relaxed Margin Components Analysis for Person Re-identification
abstract
Person re-identification across disjoint camera views plays a significant role in video surveillance. Several margin-based metric learning algorithms have recently been proposed to learn an optimal metric, with the goal that samples of the same person always belong to the same class while those from different classes are separated by a large margin. These approaches require no modification or extension in order to solve problems of multiple (as opposed to binary) classification. However, the formation of the margin in these methods is not scalable, and thus cannot adequately use inter-class information according to the relevant practical application. To address this issue, we propose a novel algorithm called Relaxed Margin Components Analysis (RMCA) to “relax” the margin constraint. Furthermore, we equip our RMCA with a kernel function to form a Kernelized RMCA (KRMCA) to learn non-linear distance metrics in order to further improve re-identification accuracy. Promising results from experiments on several public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.
