2020 Interrupted and Cascaded Permutation Invariant Training for Speech Separation
abstract
Permutation Invariant Training (PIT) has long been a stepping stone method for training speech separation model in handling the label ambiguity problem. With PIT selecting the minimum cost label assignments dynamically, very few studies considered the separation problem to be optimizing both the model parameters and the label assignments, but focused on searching for good model architecture and parameters. In this paper, we investigate instead for a given model architecture the various flexible label assignment strategies for training the model, rather than directly using PIT. Surprisingly, we discover a significant performance boost compared to PIT is possible if the model is trained with fixed label assignments and a good set of labels is chosen. With fixed label training cascaded between two sections of PIT, we achieved the state-of-the-art performance on WSJ0-2mix without changing the model architecture at all.

2019 Machine Comprehension of Spoken Content: TOEFL Listening Test and Spoken SQuAD
abstract
A user can scan through a text easily, but it is not the case for spoken content, because they cannot be directly displayed on-screen. As a result, accessing large collections of spoken content is much more difficult and time-consuming than doing so for the text content. It would therefore be helpful to develop machines that understand spoken content. In this paper, we propose two new tasks for machine comprehension of spoken content. The first is a listening comprehension test for TOEFL, a challenging academic English examination for English learners who are not the native English speakers. We show that the proposed model outperforms the naive approaches and other neural network based models by exploiting the hierarchical structures of natural languages and the selective power of attention mechanism. For the second listening comprehension task - spoken SQuAD - we find that speech recognition errors severely impair machine comprehension; we propose the use of subword units to mitigate the impact of these errors.

2018 Spoken SQuAD: A Study of Mitigating the Impact of Speech Recognition Errors on Listening Comprehension
abstract
Reading comprehension has been widely studied. One of the most representative reading comprehension tasks is Stanford Question Answering Dataset (SQuAD), on which machine is already comparable with human. On the other hand, accessing large collections of multimedia or spoken content is much more difficult and time-consuming than plain text content for humans. It's therefore highly attractive to develop machines which can automatically understand spoken content. In this paper, we propose a new listening comprehension task - Spoken SQuAD. On the new task, we found that speech recognition errors have catastrophic impact on machine comprehension, and several approaches are proposed to mitigate the impact.

2018 Improving Unsupervised Style Transfer in end-to-end Speech Synthesis with end-to-end Speech Recognition
abstract
End-to-end TTS model can directly take an utterance as reference, and generate speech from the text with prosody and speaker characteristics similar to the reference utterance. Ideally, the transcription of reference utterance does not need to match the text to be synthesized, so unsupervised style transfer can be achieved. However, in the previous model, because only the matched text and speech are used in training, given unmatched text and speech during testing would make the model synthesize blurry speech. In this paper, we propose to mitigate the problem by using the unmatched text and speech during training, and using the ASR accuracy of an end-to-end ASR model to guide the training procedure. The experimental results show that with the guidance of end-to-end ASR, both the ASR accuracy (objective evaluation) and the listener preference (subjective evaluation) of the speech generated by TTS model are improved. Moreover, we propose attention consistency loss as regularization, which is shown to accelerate the training.

2011 IMS cloud computing architecture for high-quality multimedia applications
abstract
A novel IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) framework with cloud computing architecture is proposed for use in high-quality multimedia applications. The IMS supports heterogeneous networking with Quality-of-Service (QoS) policy. MapReduce analysis is also used to enhance cloud computing capability. This architecture enables users to access high-quality multimedia applications via Android-based appliances. In this study, the IMS QoS policies of three wireless access technologies, 3G, WiFi and WiMAX, are integrated in a cloud computing environment to provide different services such as VoIP services and video streaming services. Experimental results indicate that the proposed mechanism improves system performance by allocating resources according to service priority. The proposed architecture also significantly improves system capacity to accommodate numerous users.
