Energy Efficiency Optimization for Rate-Splitting Multiple Access in ISAC SystemsabstractWe consider a rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) assisted dual-functional integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, where the ISAC base station (BS) has the dual capability to simultaneously communicate with downlink users and to probe detection signals to a target. For this system, we focus on the problem of energy efficiency (EE) maximization and propose a new algorithmic framework that aims to optimize the beamforming matrices of RSMA such as to maximize the EE. Our framework is applicable to the optimization of both common and private streams’ beamforming matrices, and it accounts for a variety of constraints which includes power consumption constraint, communication rate constraints and a sensing quality constraint which is expressed with the aid of Cramér-Rao bound (CRB). Finally, the performance of our framework is compared to that of SDMA and NOMA based ISAC, and the superiority of RSMA-ISAC to SDMA-ISAC and NOMA-ISAC is revealed. George A. | 2019 | Multi-relay cooperation with self-energy recycling and power consumption considerationsabstractWe focus on the problem of rate-optimal beamforming for wireless powered cooperative communications systems. We consider the case of systems employing multiple wireless powered Amplify and Forward self-energy recycling relays and relay selection. By employing a generic piecewise linear energy harvesting model, that can adapt to the characteristics of different non linear energy harvesting measurements and models, we present the solution to the rate-optimal beamformer design problem. Our solution is based on solving a set of simple optimization subproblems where the solution of each one of them can be found in a simple closed form. Moreover, for the first time we combine such a realistic energy harvesting model with an equally realistic power consumption model at the self-energy recycling relays that not only accounts for the transmit power but also for other sources of power consumption (e.g. the power consumption of the relay circuits). By means of simulations we quantify the gains that multiple relays can bring validating that significant gains can be delivered for a variety of relay placements. George A. Ropokis

On Fixed Beamforming in Sectored mmWave Ultra Dense Networks at 73GHzabstractWe investigate the use of fixed analogue transmit beamforming for downlink communication in millimetre-wave (mmWave) band ultra-dense networks (UDNs) at 73GHz. Our simulation study is based on 3D radiation patterns using a real design of large planar antenna arrays with different horizontal beamwidths and full characterisation of interference. The effects of network densification are captured through different ratios of the number of access points (APs) to the number of users. We quantify the system's performance by evaluating outage and achievable rate. The results show that users with rates around the mean benefit more from the densification than from narrowing the beamwidth, but for users with low rates, narrow beams also provide a significant increase in throughput. | 2018 | Cognitive Beamforming in Radar BandsabstractWe investigate the problem of beamformer design for communications systems coexisting with legacy radar systems with mechanically rotating antennas. Based on measurement campaign findings that support the assumption of fast decoherence for the radar-to-base station interference within a radar rotation, as well as the assumption of very strong correlation of interference channel realizations corresponding to the same radar rotation phase, we introduce beamforming solutions exploring these channel characteristics, without imposing the need for current channel state information. Different beamformer designs are proposed, characterized by different levels of computational complexity, that are applicable both in the case of synchronous systems, where the communication system is aware of the radar rotation phase, as well as in the case of asynchronous systems. | 2016 | Energy efficient power allocation for carrier aggregation enabled communications systemsabstractThe Energy Efficiency (EE) of Carrier Aggregation (CA) enabled communications systems is studied. In more detail, the problem of the optimal power allocation for CA enabled systems exploiting multiple Parallel Frequency Bands (PFBs) is addressed based on an EE maximization criterion. Both the case of full Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) as well as the case of quantized CSIT are studied and novel EE-optimal power allocation algorithms are derived. The derived algorithms are used in order to investigate the relation between the system's EE and the system design parameters, e.g. the number of PFBs, the number of feedback bits and the fading conditions. Focusing on the problem of optimal feedback allocation, it is shown by means of simulations that the optimal allocation of feedback to the PFBs is related to the fading conditions. Moreover, focusing on the problem of the selection of the number of PFBs, it becomes evident that the optimal selection of the number of PFBs is strongly related to the number of available feedback bits. Thereby, the interplay between EE-optimal feedback and power allocation design and system parameters is explored. George A. Ropokis, Fotis Foukalas

Coordinated Shared Spectrum Precoding With Distributed CSITabstractIn this paper, the operation of a licensed shared access system is investigated, considering downlink communication. The system comprises a multiple-input-single-output (MISO) incumbent transmitter (TX)-receiver (RX) pair, which offers a spectrum sharing opportunity to a MISO licensee TX-RX pair. Our main contribution is the design of a coordinated transmission scheme, inspired by the underlay cognitive radio (CR) approach, with the aim of maximizing the average rate of the licensee, subject to an average rate constraint for the incumbent. In contrast to most prior works on the underlay CR, the coordination of the two TXs takes place under a realistic channel state information (CSI) scenario, where each TX has solely access to the instantaneous direct channel of its served terminal. Such a CSI knowledge setting brings about a formulation based on the theory of Team Decisions, whereby the TXs aim at optimizing a common objective given the same constraint set, on the basis of individual channel information. Consequently, a novel set of applicable precoding schemes consisting in letting the two TXs cooperate on the basis of the statistical information is proposed. We verify by simulations that this novel, practically relevant, coordinated precoding scheme outperforms the standard underlay CR approach. | 2016 | Joint Sensing and Reception Design of SIMO Hybrid Cognitive Radio SystemsabstractIn this paper, the problem of joint design of spectrum sensing (SS) and receive beamforming, with reference to a cognitive radio (CR) system, is considered. The aim of the proposed design is the maximization of the achievable average uplink rate of a secondary user, subject to an outage-based quality-of-service constraint for primary communication. A hybrid CR system approach is studied, according to which the system either operates as an interweave (i.e., opportunistic) or as an underlay (i.e., spectrum sharing) CR system, based on SS results. A realistic channel state information framework is assumed, according to which the direct channel links are known by the multiple antenna receivers, while merely statistical (covariance) information is available for the interference links. A new closed-form approximation is derived for the outage probability of primary communication, and the problem of rate-optimal selection of SS parameters and receive beamformers is addressed for hybrid, interweave, and underlay CR systems. It is proved that our proposed system design outperforms both underlay and interweave CR systems for a range of system scenarios. Miltiades Filippou, George A. | 2015 | A Comparative Performance Analysis of Interweave and Underlay Multi-Antenna Cognitive Radio NetworksabstractIn this paper, an analytical performance study for multi-antenna Cognitive Radio (CR) systems is presented. The two most popular CR approaches, namely, the interweave and underlay system designs, are considered and based on the derived analytical framework, a throughput-based comparison of these two system designs is presented. The system parameters are selected such that a quality of service (QoS) constraint on primary communication, is satisfied. Closed form expressions for the outage probability at the Primary User (PU), as well as expressions for the ergodic rate of the Secondary User (SU) are derived, for both system designs. The derived expressions are functions of key design parameters, such as the sensing time and the detection threshold in the case of interweave CR, and the maximum allowable interference power received by the PU, in the case of underlay CR. Based on the derived expressions, for interweave CR, the sensing parameters, i.e., sensing time and energy detection threshold, are optimized such as to maximize the secondary system rate. By comparing the throughput performance for both system designs, the existence of specific regimes (in terms of primary activity, number of transmit and receive antennas as well as the outage probability of the PU), where one CR approach outperforms the other, is highlighted. | 2013 | A team decisional beamforming approach for underlay cognitive radio networksabstractIn this paper, the problem of the coexistence of two multiple-antenna wireless links is addressed in a cognitive radio scenario. The novelty brought by our setup is three-fold: First we consider a more realistic rate target constraint at the primary receiver instead of the less meaningful maximum interference temperature, second we propose a limited channel state information (CSI) structure whereby transmitters only have access to partly instantaneous feedback (i.e., about the direct channels) and partly statistical feedback (i.e., about the interference channels). Third, we formulate a distributed decision making scenario, by which channel information is not shared among primary and secondary transmitters. Instead, a transmitter must make a precoding decision based on local CSI only. The problem is recast as a team decision theoretic problem and the optimal precoders are obtained by solving semidefinite programs (SDPs). A distributed algorithm is derived and compared with classical precoding solutions and gains are illustrated over a range of scenarios. Miltiades Filippou, George A. Ropokis, David Gesbert

Rate optimal power policies in underlay cognitive radios with limited channel feedbackabstractIn this paper, two new power policies (PPs), namely the Rate Maximization Policy (RMP) and the Rate-Bound Maximization Policy (RBMP), for Cognitive Radio (CR) systems are developed based on an expected rate maximization criterion. Both policies are designed such as to satisfy a constraint related to the average interference caused by the CR network to primary communication. The key novelty here is that the proposed PPs take into account the existence of limited (hybrid) channel feedback, where the direct secondary channel is known instantaneously while the interference caused by the primary transmission to the secondary receiver is only known statistically. The optimal policy (RMP) is characterized, and a low complexity algorithm is presented that allows for its efficient and accurate implementation. The two policies are compared and RMP is shown to lead to substantial energy consumption savings at equal rate performance. George A. Ropokis, David Gesbert, Kostas Berberidis

Optimal Combining of Instantaneous and Statistical CSI in the SIMO Interference ChannelabstractThe uplink of the two-user multiple-antenna interference channel is considered and the optimal (in the ergodic rate sense) beamforming (BF) problem is posed and solved. Specifically, a feedback scenario is studied whereby a base station (BS) is allowed to estimate the instantaneous channel vector information from the users it serves, but not from out-of-cell interference users. That is to say, only statistical information can be obtained regarding the interference. In contrast with most previous works, the motivation behind the presumed feedback scenario is the compliance with current cellular network standards. For this scenario, we derive new expressions for the ergodic user rates. Exploiting the derived expressions, the optimal, with respect to ergodic rate maximization, receive BF vectors are found in closed-form. Finally, new user scheduling schemes are proposed, which exploit the derived BF solution and allow an efficient use of combined instantaneous and statistical information. | 2011 | BER Performance Analysis of Cooperative DaF Relay Networks and a New Optimal DaF StrategyabstractAn analytical bit error rate (BER) performance study of three detect-and-forward (DaF) policies under a common framework is presented in this paper. More specifically, the direct, thresholded and link-adaptive schemes are studied, which differ in the way the decision on the transmitted symbol is forwarded from the relay to the destination. The analysis is carried out for a single relay DaF transmission protocol and takes into account the symbol decision errors that may occur at the relay. Simple closed-form analytical BER expressions are derived for all three schemes, which are completely verified by simulations. Moreover, by minimizing a properly selected conditional BER expression, a novel optimal DaF strategy is proposed, which outperforms all previously known related methods. George A. | 2010 | An Exact Performance Analysis of MRC / OSTBC over Generalized Fading ChannelsabstractA unified analytical framework for evaluating the performance of maximal ratio combining (MRC) and orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) over generalized fading channels is presented. The basic motivation for developing such a framework pertains to analyzing the distribution of a sum of squared random variables (RVs) belonging to different families of fading distributions. Following a novel analytical approach stemming from the definition of a common moment generating function (MGF) model for these families of distributions, the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of a general sum of squared RVs are expressed by simple infinite Gamma series expansions. Based on these expressions, the capacity and error probability of MRC/OSTBC over generalized fading channels is thoroughly studied. The developed theory is used to evaluate the performance of OSTBC for a mixed Nakagami-m/Rice fading model and novel analytical results are presented. The accuracy of the derived expressions is validated by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. George A. Ropokis, Athanasios A. Rontogiannis, P. Takis Mathiopoulos, Kostas Berberidis

Quadratic forms in normal RVs: theory and applications to OSTBC over hoyt fading channelsabstractIn this paper, the statistics of quadratic forms in normal random variables (RVs) are studied and their impact on performance analysis of wireless communication systems is explored. First, a chi-squared series expansion is adopted to represent the probability density function of a quadratic form in normal RVs and novel series truncation error bounds are derived, which are much tighter compared to already known ones. Secondly, it is theoretically shown that when an orthogonal space time block coding (OSTBC) transmission scheme is used, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver under various fading conditions can be expressed as a quadratic form in normal RVs. Capitalizing on these results, a thorough error probability and capacity analysis is presented for the performance of OSTBC systems over Nakagami-q (Hoyt) fading channels. For all error probability and capacity performance criteria considered, simple, closed-form truncation error bounds expressions are derived, which avoid the use of infinite sums and complicated functions. The proposed theoretical analysis is validated through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. George A. Ropokis, Athanasios A. Rontogiannis, P. Takis Mathiopoulos

| 2007 | Performance Analysis of Orthogonal Space Time Block Coding over Hoyt Fading ChannelsabstractIn this paper, a novel error probability analysis of orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) over independent but not necessarily identical Hoyt (Nakagami-q) fading channels is presented. First, it is shown that for a precise performance analysis the derivation of the distribution of a quadratic form in normal random variables is necessary. After representing this distribution using a chi-squared series expansion a new, tight upper bound on the series truncation error is obtained. The proposed bound has a simple form, which allows the derivation of closed-form truncation error bound expressions for several performance analysis criteria. Based on the chi-squared series formulation, closed-form error probability expressions are also provided. Simulation results show that the proposed bounds are much tighter compared to previously derived ones and verify our analytical results. George A. Ropokis, Athanasios A. Rontogiannis, P.
